We report the first high-precision mass measurements of the neutron-rich nuclei $^{74,75}$Ni and the clearly identified ground state of $^{76}$Cu, along with a more precise mass-excess value of $^{78}$Cu, performed with the double Penning trap JYFLTRAP at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. These new results lead to a quantitative estimation of the quenching for the N=50 neutron shell gap. The impact of this shell quenching on core-collapse supernova dynamics is specifically tested using a dedicated statistical equilibrium approach that allows a variation of the mass model independent of the other microphysical inputs. We conclude that the impact of nuclear masses is strong when implemented using a fixed trajectory as in the previous studies, but the effect is substantially reduced when implemented self-consistently in the simulation.

A precise determination of the ground state $^{111}$In (9/2+) electron capture to ground state of $^{111}$Cd (1/2+) Q value has been performed utilizing the double Penning trap mass spectrometer, JYFLTRAP. A value of 857.63(17) keV was obtained, which is nearly a factor of 20 more precise than the value extracted from the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020 (AME2020). The high-precision electron-capture Q value measurement along with the nuclear energy level data of 866.60(6) keV, 864.8(3) keV, 855.6(10) keV, and 853.94(7) keV for $^{111}$Cd was used to determine whether the four states are energetically allowed for a potential ultra-low Q-value β decay or electron-capture decay. Our results confirm that the excited states of 866.60(6) keV with spin-parity (Jπ) of 3/2$^{+}$ and 864.8(3) keV with Jπ=3/2+ are ruled out due to their deduced electron-capture Q value being smaller than 0 keV at the level of around 20σ and 50σ, respectively. Electron-capture decays to the excited states at 853.94(7) keV (Jπ=7/2+) and 855.6(10) keV (Jπ=3/2+), are energetically allowed with Q values of 3.69(19) keV and 2.0(10) keV, respectively. The allowed decay transition $^{111}$In (9/2$^{+}$) → $^{111}$Cd (7/2$^{+}$), with a Q value of 3.69(19) keV, is a potential new candidate for neutrino-mass measurements by future EC experiments featuring new powerful detection technologies. The results show that the indium level 2p1/2 for this decay branch leads to a significant increase in the number of EC events in the energy region sensitive to the electron neutrino mass.

Collinear laser spectroscopy of the N=Z=21 self-conjugate nucleus $^{42}$Sc has been performed at the JYFL IGISOL IV facility in order to determine the change in nuclear mean-square charge radius between the Iπ=0+ ground state and the Iπ=7+ isomer via the measurement of the 42g,42mSc isomer shift. New multi-configurational Dirac-Fock calculations for the atomic mass shift and field shift factors have enabled a recalibration of the charge radii of the $^{42−46}$Sc isotopes which were measured previously. While consistent with the treatment of proton-neutron, proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairing on an equal footing, the reduction in size for the isomer is observed to be of a significantly larger magnitude than that expected from both shell-model and ab-initio calculations. The measured nuclear magnetic dipole moment and electric quadruple moment, on the other hand, are in good agreement with simple empirical estimates and shell-model calculations.

International audience; The ground state to ground state electron-capture Q value of Dy159 (3/2-) has been measured directly using the double Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP. A value of 364.73(19) keV was obtained from a measurement of the cyclotron frequency ratio of the decay parent Dy159 and the decay daughter Tb159 ions using the novel phase-imaging ion-cyclotron resonance technique. The Q values for allowed Gamow-Teller transition to 5/2- and the third-forbidden unique transition to 11/2+ state with excitation energies of 363.5449(14) keV and 362.050(40) keV in Tb159 were determined to be 1.18(19) keV and 2.68(19) keV, respectively. The high-precision Q value of transition 3/2-→5/2- from this work, revealing itself as the lowest electron-capture Q value, is used to unambiguously characterize all the possible lines that are present in its electron-capture spectrum. We performed atomic many-body calculations for both transitions to determine electron-capture probabilities from various atomic orbitals and found an order of magnitude enhancement in the event rates near the end point of energy spectrum in the transition to the 5/2- nuclear excited state, which can become very interesting once the experimental challenges of identifying decays into excited states are overcome. The transition to the 11/2+ state is strongly suppressed and found unsuitable for measuring the neutrino mass. These results show that the electron-capture in the Dy159 atom, going to the 5/2- state of the Tb159 nucleus, is a new candidate that may open the way to determine the electron-neutrino mass in the sub-eV region by studying electron-capture. Further experimental feasibility studies, including coincidence measurements with realistic detectors, will be of great interest.

We report the first direct determination of the ground-state to ground-state electron-capture $Q$-value for the $^{72}$As to $^{72}$Ge decay by measuring their atomic mass difference utilizing the double Penning trap mass spectrometer, JYFLTRAP. The $Q$-value was measured to be 4343.596(75)~keV, which is more than a 50-fold improvement in precision compared to the value in the most recent Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020. Furthermore, the new $Q$-value was found to be 12.4(40)~keV (3.1 $\sigma$) lower. With the significant reduction of the uncertainty of the ground-state to ground-state $Q$-value value combined with the level scheme of $^{72}$Ge from $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy, we confirm that the five potential ultra-low $Q$-value ${\beta^{+}}$-decay or electron capture transitions are energetically forbidden, thus precluding all the transitions as possible candidates for the electron neutrino mass determination. Isomeric states in $^{128}$In and $^{130}$In have been studied with the JYFLTRAP Penning trap at the IGISOL facility. By employing state-of-the-art ion manipulation techniques, three different beta-decaying states in $^{128}$In and $^{130}$In have been separated and their masses measured. JYFLTRAP was also used to select the ions of interest for identification at a post-trap decay spectroscopy station. A new beta-decaying high-spin isomer feeding the 15− isomer in $^{128}$Sn has been discovered in $^{128}$In at 1797.6(20) keV. Shell-model calculations employing a CD-Bonn potential re-normalized with the perturbative G-matrix approach suggest this new isomer to be a 16+ spin-trap isomer. In $^{130}$In, the lowest-lying (10−) isomeric state at 58.6(82) keV was resolved for the first time using the phase-imaging ion cyclotron resonance technique. The energy difference between the 10− and 1− states in $^{130}$In, stemming from parallel/antiparallel coupling of (π0g9/2−1)⊗(ν0h11/2−1), has been found to be around 200 keV lower than predicted by the shell model. Precise information on the energies of the excited states determined in this work is crucial for producing new improved effective interactions for the nuclear shell model description of nuclei near $^{132}$Sn.

The ground-state-to-ground-state β-decay Q value of Cs135(7/2+)→Ba135(3/2+) has been directly measured for the first time. The measurement was done utilizing both the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron resonance technique and the time-of-flight ion-cyclotron resonance technique at the JYFLTRAP Penning-trap setup and yielded a mass difference of 268.66(30) keV between Cs135(7/2+) and Ba135(3/2+). With this very small uncertainty, this measurement is a factor of 3 more precise than the currently adopted Q value in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2016. The measurement confirms that the first-forbidden unique β--decay transition Cs135(7/2+)→Ba135(11/2-) is a candidate for antineutrino mass measurements with an ultralow Q value of 0.44(31) keV. This Q value is almost an order of magnitude smaller than those of nuclides presently used in running or planned direct (anti)neutrino mass experiment. The ground-state-to-ground-state $\beta$-decay $Q$-value of $^{135}\textrm{Cs}(7/2^+)\to\,^{135}\textrm{Ba}(3/2^+)$ was directly measured for the first time utilizing the Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron Resonance (PI-ICR) technique at the JYFLTRAP Penning-trap setup. It is the first direct determination of this $Q$-value and its value of 268.66(30)\,keV is a factor of three more precise than the currently adopted $Q$-value in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2016. Moreover, the $Q$-value deduced from the $\beta$-decay endpoint energy has been found to deviate from our result by approximately 6 standard deviations. The measurement confirms that the first-forbidden unique $\beta^-$-decay transition $^{135}\textrm{Cs}(7/2^+)\to\,^{135}\textrm{Ba}(11/2^-)$ is a candidate for antineutrino-mass measurements with an ultra-low $Q$-value of $0.44(31)$ keV. This $Q$-value is almost an order of magnitude smaller than in any presently running or planned direct (anti)neutrino-mass experiment.

International audience; Accurate mass measurements of neutron-rich iron and cobalt isotopes Fe67 and Co69,70 have been realized with the JYFLTRAP double Penning-trap mass spectrometer. With novel ion-manipulation techniques, the masses of the Co69,70 ground states and the 1/2− isomer in Co69 have been extracted for the first time. The measurements remove ambiguities in the previous mass values and yield a smoother trend on the mass surface, extending it beyond N=40. The moderate N=40 subshell gap has been found to weaken below Ni68, a region known for shape coexistence and increased collectivity. The excitation energy for the 1/2− intruder state in Co69 has been determined for the first time and is compared to large-scale shell-model calculations. The new mass values also reduce significantly mass-related uncertainties for the astrophysical rapid neutron-capture process calculations.

International audience; Rapid shape evolutions near A=100 are now the focus of much attention in nuclear science. Much of the recent work has been centered on isotopes with Z≤40, where the shapes are observed to transition between near-spherical to highly deformed with only a single pair of neutrons added. At higher Z, the shape transitions become more gradual as triaxiality sets in, yet the coexistence of varying shapes continues to play an important role in the low-energy nuclear structure, particularly in the odd-Z isotopes. This work aims to characterize competing shapes in the triaxial region between Zr and Sn isotopes using ultrafast timing techniques to measure lifetimes of excited states in the neutron-rich nucleus Rh109. The measurements confirm the persistence at higher Z of similarly large deformations observed near Z=40. Moreover, we show that new self-consistent mean-field calculations, with proper treatment of the odd nucleon, are able to reproduce the coexisting triaxial and highly deformed configurations revealing, for the first time, the important contribution of the unpaired nucleon to these different shapes based on the blocking of specific single-particle orbitals.

Excited levels of 88Br populated in the β decay of 88Se have been studied by means of βγ and γ γ spectroscopy methods. Neutron-rich parent 88Se nuclei were produced with proton-induced fission of 238U using the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) method and separated from contaminants using a dipole magnet and the coupled JYFLTRAP Penning trap at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyl ¨ a. The level scheme ¨ of 88Br has been constructed and log f t values of levels were determined. The ground-state spin of 88Br is now firmly determined to be 1−. Low-energy levels in 88Br were interpreted as members of the πp3/2(νd5/2) 3, πp−1 3/2(νd5/2) 3, πf −1 5/2 (νd5/2) 3, and πg9/2νg7/2 multiplets. International audience; Half-lives and branching ratios for the two mirror $ \beta$ decays of$^{23}$Mg and$^{27}$Si have been measured at the University of Jyväskylä with the IGISOL facility. The results obtained, $ T_{1/2}=11.303(3)$ s and $ T_{1/2}= 4.112(2)$ s for the half-lives of$^{23}$Mg and$^{27}$Si , respectively, are 7 and 8 times more precise than the averages of previous measurements. The values obtained for the super-allowed branching ratios of$^{23}$Mg and$^{27}$Si are $ B.R.=92.18(8)\%$ and $ B.R.=99.74(2)\%$ , respectively. The result for$^{23}$Mg is three times more precise than the average of the previous measurements, while for$^{27}$Si the precision has not been improved, the average of the previous measurements being already very precise. Isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections have been calculated for the two nuclei to determine the corrected $ {F}t$ value.

The odd-odd 54;56;58;60;62;64Mn isotopes (Z = 25) were studied using bunched-beam collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE, CERN. From the measured hyperfine spectra the spins and magnetic moments of Mn isotopes up to N = 39 were extracted. The previous tentative ground state spin assignments of 58;60;62;64Mn are now firmly determined to be I = 1 along with an I = 4 assignment for the isomeric states in 58;60;62Mn. The I = 1 magnetic moments show a decreasing trend with increasing neutron number while the I = 4 moments remain quite constant between N = 33 and N = 37. The results are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations using the GXPF1A and LNPS effective interactions. The excellent agreement of the ground state moments with the predictions from the LNPS calculations illustrates the need for an increasing amount of proton excitations across Z = 28 and neutron excitations across N = 40 in the ground state wave functions from N = 37 onwards. Laser spectroscopy was performed on the 72,74,76,78Ga isotopes at On-Line Isotope Mass Separator (ISOLDE) facility, CERN. Ground-state nuclear spins and moments were extracted from the measured hyperfine spectra. The results are compared to shell-model calculations, which provide a detailed probe of the nuclear wave function. The spin is established from the shape of the hyperfine structure and the parity inferred from a comparison of shell-model calculations with the measured nuclear moments. The ground states of 76,78Ga are both assigned a spin and parity of Iπ=2−, while 74Ga is tentatively assigned as Iπ=3−. For 72Ga, the results are consistent with the previous I=3 assignment.
