For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ and a positive integer $n$, the Ramsey number $r(F,n)$ denotes the minimum $N$ such that every $N$-vertex $F$-free $k$-uniform hypergraph contains an independent set of $n$ vertices. A hypergraph is $\textit{slowly growing}$ if there is an ordering $e_1,e_2,\dots,e_t$ of its edges such that $|e_i \setminus \bigcup_{j = 1}^{i - 1}e_j| \leq 1$ for each $i \in \{2, \ldots, t\}$. We prove that if $k \geq 3$ is fixed and $F$ is any non $k$-partite slowly growing $k$-uniform hypergraph, then for $n\ge2$, \[ r(F,n) = \Omega\Bigl(\frac{n^k}{(\log n)^{2k - 2}}\Bigr).\] In particular, we deduce that the off-diagonal Ramsey number $r(F_5,n)$ is of order $n^{3}/\mbox{polylog}(n)$, where $F_5$ is the triple system $\{123, 124, 345\}$. This is the only 3-uniform Berge triangle for which the polynomial power of its off-diagonal Ramsey number was not previously known. Recent work showing the existence of conflict-free almost-perfect hypergraph matchings has found many applications. We show that, assuming certain simple degree and codegree conditions on the hypergraph $ \mathcal{H} $ and the conflicts to be avoided, a conflict-free almost-perfect matching can be extended to one covering all of the vertices in a particular subset of $ V(\mathcal{H}) $, by using an additional set of edges; in particular, we ensure that our matching avoids all of a further set of conflicts, which may consist of both old and new edges. This setup is useful for various applications, and our main theorem provides a black box which encapsulates many long and tedious calculations, massively simplifying the proofs of results in generalised Ramsey theory., Comment: 19 pages + 4 pages appendix

Let $f_{F,G}(n)$ be the largest size of an induced $F$-free subgraph that every $n$-vertex $G$-free graph is guaranteed to contain. We prove that for any triangle-free graph $F$, \[ f_{F,K_3}(n) = f_{K_2,K_3}(n)^{1 + o(1)} = n^{\frac{1}{2} + o(1)}.\] Along the way we give a slight improvement of a construction of Erd\H os-Frankl-R\"odl for the Brown-Erd\H os-S\'os $(3r-3,3)$-problem when $r$ is large. In contrast to our result for $K_3$, for any $K_4$-free graph $F$ containing a cycle, we prove there exists $c_F > 0$ such that $$f_{F,K_4}(n) > f_{K_2,K_4}(n)^{1 + c_F} = n^{\frac{1}{3}+c_F+o(1)}.$$ \iffalse We also observe that our earlier proof for $F=K_3$ generalizes to $f_{F,K_4}(n) = O(\sqrt{n}\log n)$ for all $F$ containing a cycle. \fi For every graph $G$, we prove that there exists $\varepsilon_G >0$ such that whenever $F$ is a non-empty graph such that $G$ is not contained in any blowup of $F$, then $f_{F,G}(n) = O(n^{1-\varepsilon_G})$. On the other hand, for graph $G$ that is not a clique, and every $\varepsilon>0$, we exhibit a $G$-free graph $F$ such that $f_{F,G}(n) = \Omega(n^{1-\varepsilon})$.

Let $ES_{\ell}(n)$ be the minimum $N$ such that every $N$-element point set in the plane contains either $\ell$ collinear members or $n$ points in convex position. We prove that there is a constant $C>0$ such that, for each $\ell, n \ge 3$, $$ (3\ell - 1) \cdot 2^{n-5} < ES_{\ell}(n) < \ell^2 \cdot 2^{n+ C\sqrt{n\log n}}.$$ A similar extension of the well-known Erd\H os--Szekeres cups-caps theorem is also proved.

Fix $k\ge 11$ and a rainbow $k$-clique $R$. We prove that the inducibility of $R$ is $k!/(k^k-k)$. An extremal construction is a balanced recursive blow-up of $R$. This answers a question posed by Huang, that is a generalization of an old problem of Erd\H os and S\'os. It remains open to determine the minimum $k$ for which our result is true. More generally, we prove that there is an absolute constant $C>0$ such that every $k$-vertex connected rainbow graph with minimum degree at least $C\log k$ has inducibility $k!/(k^k-k)$., Comment: 27 pages

A fundamental problem in Ramsey theory is to determine the growth rate in terms of $n$ of the Ramsey number $r(H, K_n^{(3)})$ of a fixed $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$ versus the complete $3$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices. We study this problem, proving two main results. First, we show that for a broad class of $H$, including links of odd cycles and tight cycles of length not divisible by three, $r(H, K_n^{(3)}) \ge 2^{\Omega_H(n \log n)}$. This significantly generalizes and simplifies an earlier construction of Fox and He which handled the case of links of odd cycles and is sharp both in this case and for all but finitely many tight cycles of length not divisible by three. Second, disproving a folklore conjecture in the area, we show that there exists a linear hypergraph $H$ for which $r(H, K_n^{(3)})$ is superpolynomial in $n$. This provides the first example of a separation between $r(H,K_n^{(3)})$ and $r(H,K_{n,n,n}^{(3)})$, since the latter is known to be polynomial in $n$ when $H$ is linear., Comment: 22 pages

We consider three extremal problems about the number of copies of a fixed graph in another larger graph. First, we correct an error in a result of Reiher and Wagner and prove that the number of $k$-edge stars in a graph with density $x \in [0, 1]$ is asymptotically maximized by a clique and isolated vertices or its complement. Next, among ordered $n$-vertex graphs with $m$ edges, we determine the maximum and minimum number of copies of a $k$-edge star whose nonleaf vertex is minimum among all vertices of the star. Finally, for $s \ge 2$, we define a particular $3$-edge-colored complete graph $F$ on $2s$ vertices with colors blue, green and red, and determine, for each $(x_b, x_g)$ with $x_b+x_g\le 1$ and $x_b, x_g \ge 0$, the maximum density of $F$ in a large graph whose blue, green and red edge sets have densities $x_b, x_g$ and $1-x_b-x_g$, respectively. These are the first nontrivial examples of colored graphs for which such complete results are proved., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

For an integer $n \geq 1$, the Erd\H{o}s-Rogers function $f_{s}(n)$ is the maximum integer $m$ such that every $n$-vertex $K_{s+1}$-free graph has a $K_s$-free subgraph with $m$ vertices. It is known that for all $s \geq 3$, $f_{s}(n) = \Omega(\sqrt{n\log n}/\log \log n)$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. Building on recent work of Mattheus and Verstra\"ete, we establish a general connection between Ramsey numbers of the form $r(F,t)$ for $F$ a fixed graph and a variant of the Zarankiewicz problem asking for the maximum number of 1s in an $m$ by $n$ $0/1$-matrix that does not have any matrix from a fixed finite family $\mathcal{L}(F)$ derived from $F$ as a submatrix. As an application, we give new lower bounds for the Ramsey numbers $r(C_5,t)$ and $r(C_7,t)$, namely, $r(C_5,t) = \tilde\Omega(t^{\frac{10}{7}})$ and $r(C_7,t) = \tilde\Omega(t^{\frac{5}{4}})$. We also show how the truth of a plausible conjecture about Zarankiewicz numbers would allow an approximate determination of $r(C_{2\ell+1}, t)$ for any fixed integer $\ell \geq 2$., Comment: 9 pages

The well-known Erd\H{o}s-Hajnal conjecture states that for any graph $F$, there exists $\epsilon>0$ such that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ that contains no induced copy of $F$ has a homogeneous set of size at least $n^{\epsilon}$. We consider a variant of the Erd\H{o}s-Hajnal problem for hypergraphs where we forbid a family of hypergraphs described by their orders and sizes. For graphs, we observe that if we forbid induced subgraphs on $m$ vertices and $f$ edges for any positive $m$ and $0\leq f \leq \binom{m}{2}$, then we obtain large homogeneous sets. For triple systems, in the first nontrivial case $m=4$, for every $S \subseteq \{0,1,2,3,4\}$, we give bounds on the minimum size of a homogeneous set in a triple system where the number of edges spanned by every four vertices is not in $S$. In most cases the bounds are essentially tight. We also determine, for all $S$, whether the growth rate is polynomial or polylogarithmic. Given two $r$-uniform hypergraphs $G$ and $H$ the Tur\'an number $\rm{ex}(G, H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free subgraph of $G$. We study the typical value of $\rm{ex}(G, H)$ when $G=G_{n,p}^{(r)}$, the Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi random $r$-uniform hypergraph, and $H=C_{2\ell}^{(r)}$, the $r$-uniform linear cycle of length $2\ell$. The case of graphs ($r=2$) is a longstanding open problem that has been investigated by many researchers. We determine the order of magnitude of $\rm{ex}\left(G_{n,p}^{(r)}, C_{2\ell}^{(r)}\right)$ for all $r\geq 4$ and all $\ell\geq 2$ up to polylogarithmic factors for all values of $p=p(n)$. We consider the maximum chromatic number of hypergraphs consisting of cliques that have pairwise small intersections. Designs of the appropriate parameters produce optimal constructions, but these are known to exist only when the number of cliques is exponential in the clique size. We construct near designs where the number of cliques is polynomial in the clique size, and show that they have large chromatic number. The case when the cliques have pairwise intersections of size at most one seems particularly challenging. Here we give lower bounds by analyzing a random greedy hypergraph process. We also consider the related question of determining the maximum number of caps in a finite projective/affine plane and obtain nontrivial upper and lower bounds.

One formulation of the Erdos-Szekeres monotone subsequence theorem states that for any red/blue coloring of the edge set of the complete graph on $\{1, 2, \ldots, N\}$, there exists a monochromatic red $s$-clique or a monochromatic blue increasing path $P_n$ with $n$ vertices, provided $N >(s-1)(n-1)$. %We had previously shown that a suitable generalization of this problem to quadruple systems is essentially equivalent to classical diagonal hypergraph Ramsey numbers. Here, we prove a similar statement as above in the off-diagonal case for triple systems, with the quasipolynomial bound $N>2^{c(\log n)^{s-1}}$. For the $t$th power $P_n^t$ of the ordered increasing graph path with $n$ vertices, we prove a near linear bound $c\, n(\log n)^{s-2}$ which improves the previous bound that applied to a more general class of graphs than $P_n^t$ due to Conlon-Fox-Lee-Sudakov.

Let $K_m^{(3)}$ denote the complete $3$-uniform hypergraph on $m$ vertices and $S_n^{(3)}$ the $3$-uniform hypergraph on $n+1$ vertices consisting of all $\binom{n}{2}$ edges incident to a given vertex. Whereas many hypergraph Ramsey numbers grow either at most polynomially or at least exponentially, we show that the off-diagonal Ramsey number $r(K_{4}^{(3)},S_n^{(3)})$ exhibits an unusual intermediate growth rate, namely, \[ 2^{c \log^2 n} \le r(K_{4}^{(3)},S_n^{(3)}) \le 2^{c' n^{2/3}\log n} \] for some positive constants $c$ and $c'$. The proof of these bounds brings in a novel Ramsey problem on grid graphs which may be of independent interest: what is the minimum $N$ such that any $2$-edge-coloring of the Cartesian product $K_N \square K_N$ contains either a red rectangle or a blue $K_n$?, Comment: 13 pages

Given a graph $F$, we consider the problem of determining the densest possible pseudorandom graph that contains no copy of $F$. We provide an embedding procedure that improves a general result of Conlon, Fox, and Zhao which gives an upper bound on the density. In particular, our result implies that optimally pseudorandom graphs with density greater than $n^{-1/3}$ must contain a copy of the Peterson graph, while the previous best result gives the bound $n^{-1/4}$. Moreover, we conjecture that the exponent $1/3$ in our bound is tight. We also construct the densest known pseudorandom $K_{2,3}$-free graphs that are also triangle-free. Finally, we obtain the densest known construction of clique-free pseudorandom graphs due to Bishnoi, Ihringer and Pepe in a novel way and give a different proof that they have no large clique., Comment: fixed some typo, and added Ferdinand Ihringer's comment which says that Kopparty's construction contains the Petersen graph when p=2 and h=3

We give asymptotically optimal constructions in generalized Ramsey theory using results about conflict-free hypergraph matchings. For example, we present an edge-coloring of $K_{n,n}$ with $2n/3 + o(n)$ colors such that each $4$-cycle receives at least three colors on its edges. This answers a question of Axenovich, F\"uredi and the second author (On generalized Ramsey theory: the bipartite case, J. Combin. Theory Ser B 79 (2000), 66--86). We also exhibit an edge-coloring of $K_n$ with $5n/6+o(n)$ colors that assigns each copy of $K_4$ at least five colors. This gives an alternative very short solution to an old question of Erd\H{o}s and Gy\'arf\'as that was recently answered by Bennett, Cushman, Dudek, and Pralat by analyzing a colored modification of the triangle removal process., Comment: 11 pages

For positive integers $n,r,s$ with $r > s$, the set-coloring Ramsey number $R(n;r,s)$ is the minimum $N$ such that if every edge of the complete graph $K_N$ receives a set of $s$ colors from a palette of $r$ colors, then there is guaranteed to be a monochromatic clique on $n$ vertices, that is, a subset of $n$ vertices where all of the edges between them receive a common color. In particular, the case $s=1$ corresponds to the classical multicolor Ramsey number. We prove general upper and lower bounds on $R(n;r,s)$ which imply that $R(n;r,s) = 2^{\Theta(nr)}$ if $s/r$ is bounded away from $0$ and $1$. The upper bound extends an old result of Erd\H{o}s and Szemer\'edi, who treated the case $s = r-1$, while the lower bound exploits a connection to error-correcting codes. We give the first exact and stability results for a hypergraph Tur\'{a}n problem with infinitely many extremal constructions that are far from each other in edit-distance. This includes an example of triple systems with Tur\'{a}n density $2/9$, thus answering some questions posed by the third and fourth authors and Reiher about the feasible region of hypergraphs. Our results also provide extremal constructions whose shadow density is a transcendental number. Our novel approach is to construct certain multilinear polynomials that attain their maximum (in the standard simplex) on a line segment and then to use these polynomials to define an operation on hypergraphs that gives extremal constructions., Comment: journal version, Discrete Analysis 2023:18, 34 pp

The feasible region $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ of a graph $F$ is the collection of points $(x,y)$ in the unit square such that there exists a sequence of graphs whose edge densities approach $x$ and whose induced $F$-densities approach $y$. A complete description of $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ is not known for any $F$ with at least four vertices that is not a clique or an independent set. The feasible region provides a lot of combinatorial information about $F$. For example, the supremum of $y$ over all $(x,y)\in \Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ is the inducibility of $F$ and $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(K_r)$ yields the Kruskal-Katona and clique density theorems. We begin a systematic study of $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ by proving some general statements about the shape of $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ and giving results for some specific graphs $F$. Many of our theorems apply to the more general setting of quantum graphs. For example, we prove a bound for quantum graphs that generalizes an old result of Bollob\'as for the number of cliques in a graph with given edge density. We also consider the problems of determining $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(F)$ when $F=K_r^-$, $F$ is a star, or $F$ is a complete bipartite graph. In the case of $K_r^-$ our results sharpen those predicted by the edge-statistics conjecture of Alon et. al. while also extending a theorem of Hirst for $K_4^-$ that was proved using computer aided techniques and flag algebras. The case of the 4-cycle seems particularly interesting and we conjecture that $\Omega_{{\rm ind}}(C_4)$ is determined by the solution to the triangle density problem, which has been solved by Razborov., Comment: revised according to two referee reports

An $(n,r,s)$-system is an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices such that every pair of edges has an intersection of size less than $s$. Using probabilistic arguments, R\"{o}dl and \v{S}i\v{n}ajov\'{a} showed that for all fixed integers $r> s \ge 2$, there exists an $(n,r,s)$-system with independence number $O\left(n^{1-\delta+o(1)}\right)$ for some optimal constant $\delta >0$ only related to $r$ and $s$. We show that for certain pairs $(r,s)$ with $s\le r/2$ there exists an explicit construction of an $(n,r,s)$-system with independence number $O\left(n^{1-\epsilon}\right)$, where $\epsilon > 0$ is an absolute constant only related to $r$ and $s$. We present a method which provides a unified framework for most stability theorems that have been proved in graph and hypergraph theory. Our main result reduces stability for a large class of hypergraph problems to the simpler question of checking that a hypergraph $\mathcal H$ with large minimum degree that omits the forbidden structures is vertex-extendable. This means that if $v$ is a vertex of $\mathcal H$ and ${\mathcal H} -v$ is a subgraph of the extremal configuration(s), then $\mathcal H$ is also a subgraph of the extremal configuration(s). In many cases vertex-extendability is quite easy to verify. We illustrate our approach by giving new short proofs of hypergraph stability results of Pikhurko, Hefetz-Keevash, Brandt-Irwin-Jiang, Bene Watts-Norin-Yepremyan and others. Since our method always yields minimum degree stability, which is the strongest form of stability, in some of these cases our stability results are stronger than what was known earlier. For every positive integer $t$ we construct a finite family of triple systems ${\mathcal M}_t$, determine its Tur\'{a}n number, and show that there are $t$ extremal ${\mathcal M}_t$-free configurations that are far from each other in edit-distance. We also prove a strong stability theorem: every ${\mathcal M}_t$-free triple system whose size is close to the maximum size is a subgraph of one of these $t$ extremal configurations after removing a small proportion of vertices. This is the first stability theorem for a hypergraph problem with an arbitrary (finite) number of extremal configurations. Moreover, the extremal hypergraphs have very different shadow sizes (unlike the case of the famous Tur\'an tetrahedron conjecture). Hence a corollary of our main result is that the boundary of the feasible region of ${\mathcal M}_t$ has exactly $t$ global maxima., Comment: updated references

A $k$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices is an $(n,k,\ell)$-omitting system if it does not contain two edges whose intersection has size exactly $\ell$. If in addition it does not contain two edges whose intersection has size greater than $\ell$, then it is an $(n,k,\ell)$-system. R\"{o}dl and \v{S}i\v{n}ajov\'{a} proved a lower bound for the independence number of $(n,k,\ell)$-systems that is sharp in order of magnitude for fixed $2 \le \ell \le k-1$. We consider the same question for the larger class of $(n,k,\ell)$-omitting systems. For $k\le 2\ell+1$, we believe that the behavior is similar to the case of $(n,k,\ell)$-systems and prove a nontrivial lower bound for the first open case $\ell=k-2$. For $k>2\ell+1$ we give new lower and upper bounds which show that the minimum independence number of $(n,k,\ell)$-omitting systems has a very different behavior than for $(n,k,\ell)$-systems. Our lower bound for $\ell=k-2$ uses some adaptations of the random greedy independent set algorithm, and our upper bounds (constructions) for $k> 2\ell+1$ are obtained from some pseudorandom graphs. We also prove some related results where we forbid more than two edges with a prescribed common intersection size and this leads to some applications in Ramsey theory. For example, we obtain good bounds for the Ramsey number $r_{k}(F^{k},t)$, where $F^{k}$ is the $k$-uniform Fan. Here the behavior is quite different than the case $k=2$ which reduces to the classical graph Ramsey number $r(3,t)$., Comment: 27 pages

A convex geometric hypergraph or cgh consists of a family of subsets of a strictly convex set of points in the plane. There are eight pairwise nonisomorphic cgh's consisting of two disjoint triples. These were studied at length by Bra{\ss} (2004) and by Aronov, Dujmovi\'c, Morin, Ooms, and da Silveira (2019). We determine the extremal functions exactly for seven of the eight configurations. The above results are about cyclically ordered hypergraphs. We extend some of them for triangle systems with vertices from a non-convex set. We also solve problems posed by P. Frankl, Holmsen and Kupavskii (2020), in particular, we determine the exact maximum size of an intersecting family of triangles whose vertices come from a set of $n$ points in the plane., Comment: Supersedes version 1 significantly. Given $r$-uniform hypergraphs $G$ and $H$ the Tur\'an number $\rm ex(G, H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free subgraph of $G$. We study the typical value of $\rm ex(G, H)$ when $G=G_{n,p}^{(r)}$, the Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi random $r$-uniform hypergraph, and $H=C_{2\ell}^{(r)}$, the $r$-uniform linear cycle of length $2\ell$. The case of graphs ($r=2$) is a longstanding open problem that has been investigated by many researchers. We determine $\rm ex(G_{n,p}^{(r)}, C_{2\ell}^{(r)})$ up to polylogarithmic factors for all but a small interval of values of $p=p(n)$ whose length decreases as $\ell$ grows. Our main technical contribution is a balanced supersaturation result for linear even cycles which improves upon previous such results by Ferber-Mckinley-Samotij and Balogh-Narayanan-Skokan. The novelty is that the supersaturation result depends on the codegree of some pairs of vertices in the underlying hypergraph. This approach could be used to prove similar results for other hypergraphs $H$.

The triangle covering number of a graph is the minimum number of vertices that hit all triangles. Given positive integers $s,t$ and an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor +t$ edges and triangle covering number $s$, we determine (for large $n$) sharp bounds on the minimum number of triangles in $G$ and also describe the extremal constructions. Similar results are proved for cliques of larger size and color critical graphs. This extends classical work of Rademacher, Erd\H os, and Lov\'asz-Simonovits whose results apply only to $s \le t$. Our results also address two conjectures of Xiao and Katona. We prove one of them and give a counterexample and prove a modified version of the other conjecture., Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure

A fundamental result in extremal set theory is Katona's shadow intersection theorem, which extends the Kruskal-Katona theorem by giving a lower bound on the size of the shadow of an intersecting family of $k$-sets in terms of its size. We improve this classical result and a related result of Ahlswede, Aydinian, and Khachatrian by proving tight bounds for families that can be quite small. For example, when $k=3$ our result is sharp for all families with $n$ points and at least $3n-7$ triples. Katona's theorem was extended by Frankl to families with matching number $s$. Erd\H{o}s and Hajnal constructed a 4-coloring of the triples of an $N$-element set such that every $n$-element subset contains 2 triples with distinct colors, and $N$ is double exponential in $n$. Conlon, Fox and R\"odl asked whether there is some integer $q\ge 3$ and a $q$-coloring of the triples of an $N$-element set such that every $n$-element subset has 3 triples with distinct colors, and $N$ is double exponential in $n$. We make the first nontrivial progress on this problem by providing a $q$-coloring with this property for all $q\geq 9$, where $N$ is exponential in $n^{2+cq}$ and $c>0$ is an absolute constant.

Given graphs $T$ and $H$, the generalized Tur\'an number ex$(n,T,H)$ is the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex graph with no copies of $H$. Alon and Shikhelman, using a result of Erd\H os, determined the asymptotics of ex$(n,K_3,H)$ when the chromatic number of $H$ is greater than 3 and proved several results when $H$ is bipartite. We consider this problem when $H$ has chromatic number 3. Even this special case for the following relatively simple 3-chromatic graphs appears to be challenging. The suspension $\widehat H$ of a graph $H$ is the graph obtained from $H$ by adding a new vertex adjacent to all vertices of $H$. We give new upper and lower bounds on ex$(n,K_3,\widehat{H})$ when $H$ is a path, even cycle, or complete bipartite graph. In this paper we present a novel approach in extremal set theory which may be viewed as an asymmetric version of Katona's permutation method. We use it to find more Tur\'an numbers of hypergraphs in the Erd\H{o}s--Ko--Rado range. An $(a,b)$-path $P$ of length $2k-1$ consists of $2k-1$ sets of size $r=a+b$ as follows. Take $k$ pairwise disjoint $a$-element sets $A_0, A_2, \dots, A_{2k-2}$ and other $k$ pairwise disjoint $b$-element sets $B_1, B_3, \dots, B_{2k-1}$ and order them linearly as $A_0, B_1, A_2, B_3, A_4\dots$. Define the (hyper)edges of $P_{2k-1}(a,b)$ as the sets of the form $A_i\cup B_{i+1}$ and $B_j\cup A_{j+1}$. The members of $P$ can be represented as $r$-element intervals of the $ak+bk$ element underlying set. Our main result is about hypergraphs that are blowups of trees, and implies that for fixed $k,a,b$, as $n\to \infty$ \[ {\rm ex}_r(n,P_{2k-1}(a,b)) = (k - 1){n \choose r - 1} + o(n^{r - 1}).\] This generalizes the Erd\H{o}s--Gallai theorem for graphs which is the case of $a=b=1$. We show that there is an absolute constant $c>0$ such that the following holds. For every $n > 1$, there is a 5-uniform hypergraph on at least $2^{2^{cn^{1/4}}}$ vertices with independence number at most $n$, where every set of 6 vertices induces at most 3 edges. The double exponential growth rate for the number of vertices is sharp. By applying a stepping-up lemma established by the first two authors, analogous sharp results are proved for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we prove a theorem on tight paths in convex geometric hypergraphs, which is asymptotically sharp in infinitely many cases. Our geometric theorem is a common generalization of early results of Hopf and Pannwitz [12], Sutherland [19], Kupitz and Perles [16] for convex geometric graphs, as well as the classical Erd\H{o}s-Gallai Theorem [6] for graphs. A fundamental barrier in extremal hypergraph theory is the presence of many near-extremal constructions with very different structures. Indeed, the classical constructions due to Kostochka imply that the notorious extremal problem for the tetrahedron exhibits this phenomenon assuming Tur\'an's conjecture. Our main result is to construct a finite family of triple systems $\mathcal{M}$, determine its Tur\'{a}n number, and prove that there are two near-extremal $\mathcal{M}$-free constructions that are far from each other in edit-distance. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $r$-uniform hypergraphs. The feasible region $\Omega(\mathcal{F})$ of $\mathcal{F}$ is the set of points $(x,y)$ in the unit square such that there exists a sequence of $\mathcal{F}$-free $r$-uniform hypergraphs whose edge density approaches $x$ and whose shadow density approaches $y$. The feasible region provides a lot of combinatorial information, for example, the supremum of $y$ over all $(x,y) \in \Omega(\mathcal{F})$ is the Tur\'{a}n density $\pi(\mathcal{F})$, and $\Omega(\emptyset)$ gives the Kruskal-Katona theorem. We undertake a systematic study of $\Omega(\mathcal{F})$, and prove that $\Omega(\mathcal{F})$ is completely determined by a left-continuous almost everywhere differentiable function; and moreover, there exists an $\mathcal{F}$ for which this function is not continuous. We also extend some old related theorems. For example, we generalize a result of Fisher and Ryan to hypergraphs and extend a classical result of Bollob\'as by almost completely determining the feasible region for cancellative triple systems., Comment: Minor changes in page 2 and page 3 and Lemma 5.3

For fixed $s \ge 3$, we prove that if optimal $K_s$-free pseudorandom graphs exist, then the Ramsey number $r(s,t) = t^{s-1+o(1)}$ as $t \rightarrow \infty$. Our method also improves the best lower bounds for $r(C_{\ell},t)$ obtained by Bohman and Keevash from the random $C_{\ell}$-free process by polylogarithmic factors for all odd $\ell \geq 5$ and $\ell \in \{6,10\}$. For $\ell = 4$ it matches their lower bound from the $C_4$-free process. We also prove, via a different approach, that $r(C_5, t)> (1+o(1))t^{11/8}$ and $r(C_7, t)> (1+o(1))t^{11/9}$. These improve the exponent of $t$ in the previous best results and appear to be the first examples of graphs $F$ with cycles for which such an improvement of the exponent for $r(F, t)$ is shown over the bounds given by the random $F$-free process and random graphs., Comment: 10 pages, minor changes to the first version

An ordered hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered, and a convex geometric hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is cyclically ordered. Extremal problems for ordered and convex geometric graphs have a rich history with applications to a variety of problems in combinatorial geometry. In this paper, we consider analogous extremal problems for uniform hypergraphs, and determine the order of magnitude of the extremal function for various ordered and convex geometric paths and matchings. Our results generalize earlier works of Bra{\ss}-K\'{a}rolyi-Valtr, Capoyleas-Pach and Aronov-Dujmovi\v{c}-Morin-Ooms-da Silveira. An {\em ordered $r$-graph} is an $r$-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered. Given $2\leq k\leq r$, an ordered $r$-graph $H$ is {\em interval} $k$-{\em partite} if there exist at least $k$ disjoint intervals in the ordering such that every edge of $H$ has nonempty intersection with each of the intervals and is contained in their union. Our main result implies that for each $\alpha > k - 1$ and $d>0$, every $n$-vertex ordered $r$-graph with $d \,n^{\alpha}$ edges has for some $m\leq n$ an $m$-vertex interval $k$-partite subgraph with $\Omega(d\, m^{\alpha})$ edges. This is an extension to ordered $r$-graphs of the observation by Erd\H os and Kleitman that every $r$-graph contains an $r$-partite subgraph with a constant proportion of the edges. Given a family of hypergraphs $\mathcal H$, let $f(m,\mathcal H)$ denote the largest size of an $\mathcal H$-free subgraph that one is guaranteed to find in every hypergraph with $m$ edges. This function was first introduced by Erd\H{o}s and Koml\'{o}s in 1969 in the context of union-free families, and various other special cases have been extensively studied since then. In an attempt to develop a general theory for these questions, we consider the following basic issue: which sequences of hypergraph families $\{\mathcal H_m\}$ have bounded $f(m,\mathcal H_m)$ as $m\to\infty$? A variety of bounds for $f(m,\mathcal H_m)$ are obtained which answer this question in some cases. Obtaining a complete description of sequences $\{\mathcal H_m\}$ for which $f(m,\mathcal H_m)$ is bounded seems hopeless.

Given $s \ge k\ge 3$, let $h^{(k)}(s)$ be the minimum $t$ such that there exist arbitrarily large $k$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ whose independence number is at most polylogarithmic in the number of vertices and in which every $s$ vertices span at most $t$ edges. Erd\H os and Hajnal conjectured (1972) that $h^{(k)}(s)$ can be calculated precisely using a recursive formula and Erd\H os offered \$500 for a proof of this. For $k=3$ this has been settled for many values of $s$ including powers of three but it was not known for any $k\geq 4$ and $s\geq k+2$. Here we settle the conjecture for all $s \ge k \ge 4$. We also answer a question of Bhat and R\"odl by constructing, for each $k \ge 4$, a quasirandom sequence of $k$-uniform hypergraphs with positive density and upper density at most $k!/(k^k-k)$. The extremal functions $ex_{\rightarrow}(n,F)$ and $ex_{\cir}(n,F)$ for ordered and convex geometric acyclic graphs $F$ have been extensively investigated by a number of researchers. Basic questions are to determine when $ex_{\rightarrow}(n,F)$ and $ex_{\cir}(n,F)$ are linear in $n$, the latter posed by Bra\ss-K\'arolyi-Valtr in 2003. In this paper, we answer both these questions for every tree $F$. We give a forbidden subgraph characterization for a family $\cal T$ of ordered trees with $k$ edges, and show that $ex_{\rightarrow}(n,T) = (k - 1)n - {k \choose 2}$ for all $n \geq k + 1$ when $T \in {\cal T}$ and $ex_{\rightarrow}(n,T) = \Omega(n\log n)$ for $T \not\in {\cal T}$. Given integers $ n > k \geq 5$, what is the minimum integer $g_k(n)$ such that any $k$-uniform hypergraph on $g_k(n)$ vertices with the property that any set of $k + 1$ vertices induces 0, 2, or 4 edges, contains an independent set of size $n$. An ordered hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered, and a convex geometric hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is cyclically ordered. Extremal problems for ordered and convex geometric graphs have a rich history with applications to a variety of problems in combinatorial geometry. In this paper, we consider analogous extremal problems for uniform hypergraphs, and discover a general partitioning phenomenon which allows us to determine the order of magnitude of the extremal function for various ordered and convex geometric hypergraphs. A special case is the ordered $n$-vertex $r$-graph $F$ consisting of two disjoint sets $e$ and $f$ whose vertices alternate in the ordering. We show that for all $n \geq 2r + 1$, the maximum number of edges in an ordered $n$-vertex $r$-graph not containing $F$ is exactly \[ {n \choose r} - {n - r \choose r}.\] This could be considered as an ordered version of the Erd\H{o}s-Ko-Rado Theorem, and generalizes earlier results of Capoyleas and Pach and Aronov-Dujmovi\v{c}-Morin-Ooms-da Silveira., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures

We consider the following problem posed by Erdos in 1962. Suppose that $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph where the number of $s$-cliques in $G$ is $t$. How small can the independence number of $G$ be? Our main result suggests that for fixed $s$, the smallest possible independence number undergoes a transition at $t=n^{s/2+o(1)}$. In the case of triangles ($s=3$) we obtain the following result which is sharp apart from constant factors and generalizes basic results in Ramsey theory: there exists $c>0$ such that every $n$-vertex graph with $t$ triangles has independence number at least $$c \cdot \min\left\{ \sqrt {n \log n}\, , \, \frac{n}{t^{1/3}} \left(\log \frac{n}{ t^{1/3}}\right)^{2/3} \right\}.$$, Comment: 8 pages

An $r$-uniform hypergraph is a tight $r$-tree if its edges can be ordered so that every edge $e$ contains a vertex $v$ that does not belong to any preceding edge and the set $e-v$ lies in some preceding edge. A conjecture of Kalai [Kalai], generalizing the Erd\H{o}s-S\'os Conjecture for trees, asserts that if $T$ is a tight $r$-tree with $t$ edges and $G$ is an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph containing no copy of $T$ then $G$ has at most $\frac{t-1}{r}\binom{n}{r-1}$ edges. A trunk $T'$ of a tight $r$-tree $T$ is a tight subtree such that every edge of $T-T'$ has $r-1$ vertices in some edge of $T'$ and a vertex outside $T'$. For $r\ge 3$, the only nontrivial family of tight $r$-trees for which this conjecture has been proved is the family of $r$-trees with trunk size one in [FF] from 1987. Our main result is an asymptotic version of Kalai's conjecture for all tight trees $T$ of bounded trunk size. This follows from our upper bound on the size of a $T$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$ in terms of the size of its shadow. We also give a short proof of Kalai's conjecture for tight $r$-trees with at most four edges. Let $F$ be a strictly balanced $r$-uniform hypergraph with $e>2$ edges and $r$-density $m$. We give a new short proof of the fact that the Tur\'an number $\ex(n, F)$ is greater than $c\, n^{r-1/m} (\log n)^{1/(e-1)}$ where $c$ depends only on $F$. The previous proof of this for $r=2$ by Bohman and Keevash and for $r \ge 3$ by Bennett and Bohman used a random greedy process and its analysis using the differential equations method. The classical hypergraph Ramsey number $r_k(s,n)$ is the minimum $N$ such that for every red-blue coloring of the $k$-tuples of $\{1,\ldots, N\}$, there are $s$ integers such that every $k$-tuple among them is red, or $n$ integers such that every $k$-tuple among them is blue. We survey a variety of problems and results in hypergraph Ramsey theory that have grown out of understanding the quantitative aspects of $r_k(s,n)$. Our focus is on recent developments and open problems.
