Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as deep learning are evolving very quickly bringing many changes to our everyday lives. To explore the future impact and potential of AI in the field of music and sound technologies a doctoral day was held between Queen Mary University of London (QMUL, UK) and Sciences et Technologies de la Musique et du Son (STMS, France). Prompt questions about current trends in AI and music were generated by academics from QMUL and STMS. Students from the two institutions then debated these questions. This report presents a summary of the student debates on the topics of: Data, Impact, and the Environment; Responsible Innovation and Creative Practice; Creativity and Bias; and From Tools to the Singularity. The students represent the future generation of AI and music researchers. The academics represent the incumbent establishment. The student debates reported here capture visions, dreams, concerns, uncertainties, and contentious issues for the future of AI and music as the establishment is rightfully challenged by the next generation.

2. Continuous descriptor-based control for deep audio synthesis

Abstract

Despite significant advances in deep models for music generation, the use of these techniques remains restricted to expert users. Before being democratized among musicians, generative models must first provide expressive control over the generation, as this conditions the integration of deep generative models in creative workflows. In this paper, we tackle this issue by introducing a deep generative audio model providing expressive and continuous descriptor-based control, while remaining lightweight enough to be embedded in a hardware synthesizer. We enforce the controllability of real-time generation by explicitly removing salient musical features in the latent space using an adversarial confusion criterion. User-specified features are then reintroduced as additional conditioning information, allowing for continuous control of the generation, akin to a synthesizer knob. We assess the performance of our method on a wide variety of sounds including instrumental, percussive and speech recordings while providing both timbre and attributes transfer, allowing new ways of generating sounds., Comment: ICASSP 2023

Abstract

Introduction: Snake envenomation is a serious public health concern. In the Middle East little is known about snakebite envenomation, which raises several challenges for emergency physicians caring for these patients.Case report: We report the case of a five-year-old boy bitten by a rare snake, Montivipera bornmuelleri, who presented to an emergency department in Lebanon. We also discuss the proper management of snake envenomation.Conclusion: This case is unique as snakebites in Lebanon are poorly studied, and little is known about the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of local snakebites.

5. Volunteer-Operated Field Medical Tents During Civilian Protests in Beirut, Lebanon: Challenges and Lessons

Abstract

In October 2019, the worsening political, economic, and perceived corruption in Lebanon led to civil unrest. In anticipation of injuries, a group of healthcare professionals and social activists summoned paramedics, nurses, and physicians through social media, to provide medical assistance in the protest area. These volunteers established a physician-led advanced first-aid tent, whose aim was to reduce the patient load on Emergency Departments in local hospitals. We present the experience of volunteers, lessons learned, and challenges faced during the establishment of the physician-led first aid tent. In this manuscript, we discuss the following aspects of our efforts that can serve as relevant lessons we learned about medical volunteerism: spontaneity in volunteerism, operations, location and storage, supplies, roaming team, coordination with emergency services, safety, documentation, communication, special situations, and transition from acute to primary care.

6. The Pathway to Academic Performance: The Role of Motivation, Competence and Socio-familial Risk Factors in Lebanese Medical Students

Abstract

While cognitive abilities are known to have a certain degree of predictive value for academic performance, it is now well-established that motivation and emotion-related variables, along with environmental variables such as socio-economic status and family support, also significantly contribute to the academic success of university students. However, the specific mechanisms through which the environment influences these non-cognitive variables in predicting academic performance, particularly within the context of non-individualistic cultures, remain underexplored. In this study we examined the influence of family support, trait Emotional Intelligence (trait EI), and academic self-efficacy (ASE) on Academic Performance (AP). Additionally, we studied competence and motivation as potential mediators in the relationship between trait EI and academic self-efficacy (ASE). The study utilized structural equation models applied to two sub-samples drawn from a group of medical students. The first sub-sample, labeled the “low risk” group, consisted of students who reported minimal difficulty in paying bills and had highly educated parents. The second sub-sample, labeled the “high risk” group, included students who reported difficulty in paying bills and had less educated parents. The findings revealed that intrinsic motivation plays a more prominent role than extrinsic motivation as a mediator between trait EI, predicted by family support, and ASE, which in turn predicted AP. Among the low-risk students, both competence and intrinsic motivation fully mediated this relationship, whereas among the high-risk students, only competence acted as a mediator. These findings have significant implications for medical educational settings and are thoroughly discussed in this study

10. Comparing the demographic data and outcomes of septic shock patients presenting to teaching or non-teaching metropolitan hospitals in the United States.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Studies looking at the effect of hospital teaching status on septic shock related inhospital mortality are lacking. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of hospital teaching status on mortality in septic shock patients in the United States. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study, using the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample Database (released in 2018). All patients with septic shock were included. Complex sample logistic regression was performed to assess the impact of hospital teaching status on patient mortality. RESULTS: A total of 388,552 septic shock patients were included in the study. The average age was 66.93 years and 51.7% were males. Most of the patients presented to metropolitan teaching hospitals (68.2%) and 31.8% presented to metropolitan non-teaching hospitals. Septic shock patients presenting to teaching hospitals were found to have a higher percentage of medical comorbidities, were more likely to be intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation (50.5% vs. 46.9%) and had a longer average length of hospital stay (12.47 d vs. 10.20 d). Septic shock patients presenting to teaching hospitals had greater odds of in-hospital mortality compared to those presenting to metropolitan non-teaching hospitals (adjusted odd ratio [OR]=1.295, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.256–1.335). CONCLUSION: Septic shock patients presenting to metropolitan teaching hospitals had significantly higher risks of mortality than those presenting to metropolitan non-teaching hospitals. They also had higher rates of intubation and mechanical ventilation as well as longer lengths of hospital stay than those in non-teaching hospitals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
