Pivoting on the idea that differences in production and financial systems may affect monetary transmission mechanisms, a global vector autoregressive (GVAR) model is built and the effectiveness of monetary policy on the real economy in the Italian regions in the period 2000–16 is tested, also taking interaction effects into account. The results show that regional gross domestic product responds positively, but asymmetrically to an expansionary monetary policy, while prices fall in the short run. It is also shown that short- and long-term interest rates react in accordance with theory.

This paper estimates the pass-through and speed of adjustment of Italian regional interest rates to changes in the money market rate for the period 1998Q1-2009Q4. Our main findings suggest that the markup for the lending rates that banks charge are generally higher in the South than in the North. Moreover, our results indicate that the pass-through tends to be longer in Southern regions. We find little evidence supporting the hypothesis of asymmetric adjustment in the lending rates, but detect some evidence supporting upward rigidity in the regional deposit rates., KOF Working Papers, 308

This paper investigates the determinants of interregional migration in Italy for the period 1985-2006, during which different migration trends took place. In so doing, in addition to the traditional variables of Harris and Todaro model, the impact of housing prices and externalities variables were studied. Our results, using a dynamic panel GMM, show that the H-T model, due to the complexity of the internal migration process, omits some important economic and non-economic variables and may not be representative of migration flow in Italy. Furthermore, our analysis confirms our intuition that for different periods we have to take into account different determinants.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the evidence for economic convergence across Italian regions using trends in interest rate spreads and premia as indicators of regional credit conditions. Our results indicate the presence of persistent interest rate differentials, and thus an absence of convergence across the twenty political regions, but we observe a high degree of convergence within the four macroeconomic areas. On the other hand we find evidence of a strong level of homogeneity in credit conditions within each of the four macroeconomic regions.

The aim of the paper is to evaluate the robustness of the theory that claims for restrictive effects of expansionary fiscal policy. It shows that such socalled “non-Keynesian effects” may arise as a consequence of a synchronous and opposite monetary policy intervention. The paper demonstrate this conclusion through a stylized model – supported by an empirical investigation on ECB and FED reaction functions - in which Central Banks take into account deficit spending as an element that generate inflation expectations. The econometric analysis shows also that the ECB reacts asymmetrically to deficit spending variations while the FED has a linear reaction to this indicator.

Since the turn of the millennium the problem of credibility of the social security system has spread to the private pension funds sector. This is evident for those countries, like Australia and Iceland, that have very large funded pensions assets as a result of strong pension reforms. The problem of trust could prevent pension fund investment from continuing to grow, weakening the privatization of the social security system. The objective of this study is to obtain new insights into the determinants of pension funds. We focus our analysis on the Australian and Icelandic experiences to study the credibility of pension fund performance and, as a consequence, of pension reform. Our credibility indicator is derived from a CAPM time-varying model. It can be used to investigate, using a Markov switching model, the linkages between economic fundamentals and the credibility of pension fund investment and the asymmetric effects of the fundamentals in the two regimes of low and hight credibillity. Our findings make a contribution to modelling policy credibility as a non-linear process with two distinct regimes. We also found large differences in the value of the coefficients for all macroeconomic variables between the low and high credibility regimes. This evidence strongly supports the hypothesis that the effects of macroeconomic fundamental variables on the level of credibility are asymmetric in all countries.
