Abstract

متلازمة العصب بين العظمي الأمامي؛ هي الاعتلال العصبي للعصب المتوسط القريب على مستوى الساعد. يمكن أن تحدث نقاط الزناد في المقصورات الأمامية للساعد ضغطا للعصب بين العظمي الأمامي، وهذا بدوره يسبب ضعف العضلات. يعرض التقرير حالة سيدة عمرها ٣٧ عاما، اشتكت من شعور غير طبيعي عند مسك القلم أثناء الكتابة. وأظهر الفحص السريري (الملاحظة٬ والملامسة٬ وقوة القبضة) ضعفا في قوة القبضة٬ ونقاط الزناد النشطة في منتصف الجانب الأمامي من الساعد وإيجابية علامة الدائرة. بدأ علاجها بالتدليك بالتبريد٬ والتحريك العصبي٬ والتحفيز العصبي الكهربائي عبر الجلد٬ وتقنية الضغط الإجهادي المعاكس أربع مرات أسبوعيا لأسبوعين. وجدت المريضة تحسنا في قوة القبضة، تم قياسه بمقياس القبضة الهيدروليكي الأساسي٬ كما وجدت تحسنا في نقاط الزناد غير النشطة باللمس٬ وتحسن خط اليد. يكشف تقرير هذه الحالة فاعلية تقنية الضغط الإجهادي المعاكس في الاعتلال العصبي الانحباسي كإضافة هامة للعلاج التحفظي. كما أظهرت تقنية الضغط الإجهادي المعاكس تحسنا في قوة العضلات.

40. Effect of age and visual feedback on upper limb reaching precision and kinematics in immersive virtual reality

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of visual feedback, age and movement repetition on the course of upper limb (UL) precision and kinematics. Methods: Fifty-one healthy participants were asked to perform 25 trials of a reaching task in immersive VR with and without benefiting from visual feedback of their hand. They were instructed to place, as accurately as possible, a controller in the centre of a virtual red cube. For each trial, the error distance (distance between the controller and the cube), a coefficient of linearity (CL), the movement time (MT), and the SPARC (a movement smoothness index) were calculated. Correlations and multivariate analyses of variance were conducted to assess the influence of visual feedback, age and movement repetition on the course of the error distance, SPARC, CL and MT throughout the 25 trials. Results: Visual feedback of the hand significantly influenced UL reaching precision (p<0.001), MT (p=0.044) and SPARC (p<0.001) but not CL. The error distance evolvement was significantly influenced by age (p=0.027) and visual feedback (p<0.001); CL by movement repetition (p<0.001) and age (p=0.013); SPARC by movement repetition (p<0.001), visual feedback of the hand (p<0.001) and age (p=0.015); and MT by visual feedback (p=0.001) and movement repetition (p=0.001) but not by age (p=0.671). Conclusion: Results of this study demonstrated that visual feedback of the hand and age have a significant influence on the course of UL precision and movement smoothness in immersive VR.

Abstract

Species living in distinct habitats often experience unique ecological selective pressures, which can drive phenotypic divergence. However, how ecophenotypic patterns are affected by allometric trends and trait integration levels is less well understood. Here we evaluate the role of allometry in shaping body size and body form diversity in Pristurus geckos utilizing differing habitats. We found that patterns of allometry and integration in body form were distinct in species with different habitat preferences, with ground-dwelling Pristurus displaying the most divergent allometric trend and high levels of integration. There was also strong concordance between intraspecific allometry across individuals and evolutionary allometry among species, revealing that differences in body form among individuals were predictive of evolutionary changes across the phylogeny at macroevolutionary scales. This suggested that phenotypic evolution occurred along allometric lines of least resistance, with allometric trajectories imposing a strong influence on the magnitude and direction of size and shape changes across the phylogeny. When viewed in phylomorphospace, the largest rock-dwelling species were most similar to the smallest ground-dwelling species, and vice versa. Thus, in Pristurus, phenotypic evolution along the differing habitat-based allometric trajectories resulted in similar body forms at differing body sizes in distinct ecological habitats.

Abstract

Introduction: The dependence on smartphones has become widespread among all age groups in every realm of daily life. There has been increased concern about the adverse effects of problematic smartphone use and media multitasking among adolescents. Recent studies used various performance measures like questionnaire surveys to examine the association between smartphone addiction and learning performance, and such studies have yielded mixed findings. The current study investigates the effects of media multitasking on cognitive performance using Electroencephalography (EEG) features and a self-report questionnaire survey. Methods: The patterns of smartphone use among adolescents in South India were investigated in this study, using a questionnaire survey. Further, the impact of smartphone usage on cognitive task performance was examined using EEG features. For this, EEGs of twenty-two healthy subjects were recorded during learning tasks before and after using a social networking site on smartphones. Subsequently, various EEG features were extracted, including ratios of wavelet decomposed EEG bands, attention index, and Sample entropy. Finally, these cognitive performance indices were evaluated and compared with a control group. Results: A total of 600 healthy individuals (341 males, 259 females) participated in the survey among whom, 310 (50.91%) belonged to the high-user group. Performance degradation (p=0.005), sleep problems (p=0.040) and mental stress (p=0.049) were more prevalent among the high-user group. A significant decline in EEG-based cognitive performance indices was also observed in the phone-use group compared to the control group. Conclusion: The findings of this study highlight the importance of controlling phone use when engaged in cognitive tasks. The study also offers an insight to develop neurofeedback techniques that enhance cognitive skills.

Abstract

Meditation has several health benefits and is also used as a complementary treatment for various ailments. Neuroimaging studies have shed light on the effects of meditation, especially on the brain. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, a powerful non-invasive imaging technique is used in this study to determine the functional connectivity in meditator’s brain. In this study, long-term effects of Rajayoga Meditation practice were considered where the difference in functional connectivity between two groups of subjects one with long duration and the other with short duration of Rajayogameditation practice was found. Two groups of subjects with long-term and short-term practice of Rajayoga meditation were recruited. Task-based fMRI was acquired as the subject performed a Neurocognitive task. Functional connectivity among the regions of Resting-State Networks was performed and four functional connectivity metrics were derived. Machine learning algorithms were used to classify these two groups based on functional connectivity metrics used as features. Abstract

Background: As women gets pregnant, many changes take place in her body like physiological changes, hormonal changes leading to increase in joint laxity, experiences increase in weight gain which leads to many of the musculoskeletal disorders. Pregnant women experience many musculoskeletal problems which are common like lower back pain, leg pain, foot pain etc. Among all of the musculoskeletal dysfunctions, foot of pregnant women has many problems and which is not known to the people. As we all know that, various foot dysfunctions like calf muscle cramps, foot pain, swelling around ankles, heel pain on standing occur most commonly during second and third trimester of pregnancy. There is lack of knowledge seen whether there is any correlation seen among foot dysfunctions and body mass index during the pregnancy. Purpose: This study was done to check whether these incidences of various foot dysfunctions with increase in the body mass index of the pregnant women are correlated. Aim: To identify the correlation of foot dysfunctions and increase in body mass index during pregnancy. Methods: In this study, 160 participants between 20-35 years were selected for this study. According to the inclusion criteria, women who were pregnant for the first time were included in this study whereas pregnant women with complications such as polyhydraminos, fibroid complicating pregnancy were excluded in this study. Participants were given written as well as verbal informed consent. They were divided into group of four according to World Health organization of the body mass index categories. Statistics: Pearson’s correlation of Instat software was used to calculate statistics. Results: According to the data, it could be seen that extremely strong relation seen between pain and obese women (p = 0.0008) whereas no significant relation was found in underweight (p = 0.1501) and normal (p = 0.1420) women. Abstract

Background: Low back pain is attributed to be the most commonly encountered health condition and considered to be one of the leading cause of disability. It is known to occur in all age groups in both developed as well as developing countries. About 80% of the patients have moderate to severe pain affecting their activities of daily living, with females more affected than males. Almost 90% of low back pain is of non-specific type. Quadratus lumborum is one of the deep muscles located closer to center of rotation of spinal segment having an ideal muscle length controlling motion at spine. Activities like sustained repetitive movements, twisting, bending, and sedentary posture for prolong duration, muscle imbalance, etc. leads to trigger point formation making quadratus lumborum as a common source of low back pain. Aim: To determine the combined effect of myofascial release therapy, muscle energy technique and stretching of Quadratus Lumborum muscle in Non-specific low back pain in a short duration span. Methods: In this Experimental study design, two groups were divided as Control and Experimental group with a pre and post test format for both groups. 35 participants were selected and divided into 2 groups by using the Random Sampling Technique using the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Outcome measures assessed were Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NRPS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Lumbar Range of Motion with Modified Schober’s Test. A specifically designed treatment protocol for individual group was used for duration of 2 weeks. Statiscal Analysis: Paired and Unpaired t test were used for the analysis of the data. Results: The results of the study showed extremely significant difference between both the groups for NPRS and ODI with p<0.0001 using unpaired t test considered extremely significant.
