Sum-frequency generation (SFG) is a second-order nonlinear process widely used for characterizing surfaces and interfaces with monolayer sensitivity. Recently, optical field enhancement in plasmonic nanocavities has enabled SFG with continuous wave (CW) lasers from nanoscale areas of molecules, promising applications like nanoscale SFG spectroscopy and coherent upconversion for mid-infrared detection at visible frequencies. Here, we demonstrate CW SFG from individual nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) cavities, which are resonant at visible frequencies and filled with a monolayer of molecules, when placed beneath a metal scanning probe tip. The tip acts as an efficient broadband antenna, focusing incident CW infrared illumination onto the nanocavity. The cascaded near-field enhancement within the NPoM nanocavity yields nonlinear optical responses across a broad range of infrared frequencies, achieving SFG enhancements of up to 14 orders of magnitude. Further, nanomechanical positioning of the tip allows for in-operando control of SFG by tuning the local field enhancement rather than the illumination intensities. The versatility of tip-enhanced nanocavities allows for SFG studies of a wide range of molecular species in the few-molecule regime without the need for complex nanofabrication of doubly-resonant nanocavities. When doped into a certain range of charge carrier concentrations, MoS2 departs from its pristine semiconducting character to become a strongly correlated material characterized by exotic phenomena such as charge density waves or superconductivity. However, the required doping levels are typically achieved using ionic-liquid gating or air-sensitive alkali-ion intercalation, which are not compatible with standard device fabrication processes. Here, we report on the emergence of superconductivity and a charge density wave phase in air-stable organic cation intercalated MoS2 crystals. By selecting two different molecular guests, we show that these correlated electronic phases depend dramatically on the intercalated cation, demonstrating the potential of organic ion intercalation to finely tune the properties of 2D materials. Moreover, we find that a fully developed zero-resistance state is not reached in few-nm-thick flakes, indicating the presence of three-dimensional superconductive paths which are severed by the mechanical exfoliation. We ascribe this behavior to an inhomogeneous charge carrier distribution, which we probe at the nanoscale using scanning near-field optical microscopy. Our results establish organic-ion intercalated MoS2 as a platform to study the emergence and modulation of correlated electronic phases.

Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have a remarkable excitonic landscape with deeply bound bright and dark exciton states. Their properties are strongly affected by lattice distortions that can be created in a controlled way via strain. Here, we perform a joint theory-experiment study investigating exciton diffusion in strained tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$) monolayers. We reveal a non-trivial and non-monotonic influence of strain. Lattice deformations give rise to different energy shifts for bright and dark excitons changing the excitonic landscape, the efficiency of intervalley scattering channels, and the weight of single exciton species to the overall exciton diffusion. We predict a minimal diffusion coefficient in unstrained WS$_2$ followed by a steep speed-up by a factor of 3 for tensile biaxial strain at about 0.6\% strain - in excellent agreement with our experiments. Here, we propose a method to determine the thickness of the most common transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) placed on the surface of transparent stamps, used for the deterministic placement of two-dimensional materials, by analyzing the red, green and blue channels of transmission-mode optical microscopy images of the samples. In particular, the blue channel transmittance shows a large and monotonic thickness dependence, making it a very convenient probe of the flake thickness. The method proved to be robust given the small flake-to-flake variation and the insensitivity to doping changes of MoS2. We also tested the method for MoSe2, WS2 and WSe2. These results provide a reference guide to identify the number of layers of this family of materials on transparent substrates only using optical microscopy., Comment: 4 figures in main text, 2 figures in supp. info

Excitons dominate the optical properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Besides optically accessible bright exciton states, TMDs exhibit also a multitude of optically forbidden dark excitons. Here, we show that efficient exciton-phonon scattering couples bright and dark states and gives rise to an asymmetric excitonic line shape. The observed asymmetry can be traced back to phonon-induced sidebands that are accompanied by a polaron redshift. We present a joint theory-experiment study investigating the microscopic origin of these sidebands in different TMD materials taking into account intra- and intervalley scattering channels opened by optical and acoustic phonons. The gained insights contribute to a better understanding of the optical fingerprint of these technologically promising nanomaterials.
