Abstract

As the use of coastal and offshore environments expands, there is a need to better understand the exposure of marine megafauna to anthropogenic activities that potentially threaten their populations. Individual satellite telemetry studies are often hampered by small sample sizes, providing limited information on spatiotemporal distributions of migratory animals and their relationships to anthropogenic threats. We addressed this issue by synthesising satellite tracking data from 484 individuals of three taxonomic groups and six species; three marine turtle, two whale and one shark. The spatial overlap between taxa distributions and multiple anthropogenic activities was assessed as a proxy for the cumulative exposure of these taxa to anthropogenic threats (coastal modification, vessel strike, underwater noise, oil spill, bycatch, entanglement, and artificial light) across an area totalling 2,205,740 km2 off north-western Australia. Core exposure areas (top 50% of the distribution) encompassed ecologically important sites for all taxa, such as the Ningaloo and Pilbara regions, migratory routes for whales and sharks in offshore waters beyond Ningaloo Reef, and marine turtle nesting beaches at Barrow Island and Cape Lambert. Although areas of high exposure represented <14% of taxa distributions, we showed that no taxa occurred in the absence of threats and that even areas with existing spatial protections are experiencing high levels of exposure. Importantly, we developed a robust approach for documenting the potential exposure of marine species to a range of human activities at appropriate spatial scales to inform conservation management. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are associated with increased suicide risk among firefighters. Few studies have examined modifiable factors, such as mindfulness facets, that might attenuate this association. This study examined the interactive effects of PTSD symptoms and mindfulness facets in relation to suicide risk among firefighters. METHOD: Overall, 831 career firefighters were assessed for PTSD symptoms, mindfulness facets, and suicide risk via the PTSD Checklist for DSM‐5, Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, and Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire—Revised, respectively. RESULTS: Greater PTSD symptoms were associated with more severe suicide risk; however, higher levels of two specific mindfulness facets, acting with awareness and nonjudging of inner experience, attenuated this association. By contrast, higher levels of the observing facet of mindfulness potentiated the association between PTSD symptoms and suicide risk. CONCLUSIONS: Suicide prevention initiatives among firefighters, particularly those experiencing trauma‐related sequelae, might benefit from the inclusion of mindfulness‐based practices alongside frontline empirically‐supported approaches. more...

14. Diurnal variation in zooplankton communities and its relationship to whale shark (Rhincodon typus) movements at Ningaloo Marine Park, Western Australia

Abstract

The seasonal appearance of the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) at Ningaloo Marine Park (NMP) is generally understood to occur primarily for feeding purposes. Despite this, knowledge of their foraging ecology at Ningaloo Marine Park remains scarce. Passive feeding, whereby R. typus swims with a partly or fully open mouth, is commonly observed during the day at Ningaloo Marine Park. Active feeding results in much higher prey consumption with R. typus individuals observed breaking the surface and exhibiting rapid accelerations in their efforts to catch prey. While there are only limited observations of R. typus actively feeding at Ningaloo Marine Park the majority of observations have been around sunset and during the night. It has previously been hypothesised that this diurnal variation in foraging effort is related to the diurnal vertical migration of their zooplanktonic prey. This study aimed to test this hypothesis by examining the variation in zooplankton abundance and composition at a study site within Ningaloo Marine Park over a 24 hour period. Plankton samples were also collected near passively feeding R. typus individuals to examine the requirements of passive feeding and how it may be influenced by zooplankton diurnal vertical migration at Ningaloo Marine Park. Finally, aerial surveys were undertaken to study the surface abundance of R. typus, comparing the number of surface sightings along a set transect between day and dusk. A significant increase in zooplankton surface concentration was recorded at night compared to the day, which is consistent with the classical zooplankton diurnal vertical migration. All diurnal migrators recognised to contribute to this trend were classified as Crustacea, an energy dense prey source for R. typus. Abstract

Locomotion is one of the major energetic costs faced by animals and various strategies have evolved to reduce its cost. Birds use interspersed periods of flapping and gliding to reduce the mechanical requirements of level flight while undergoing cyclical changes in flight altitude, known as undulating flight. Here we equipped free-ranging marine vertebrates with accelerometers and demonstrate that gait patterns resembling undulating flight occur in four marine vertebrate species comprising sharks and pinnipeds. Both sharks and pinnipeds display intermittent gliding interspersed with powered locomotion. We suggest, that the convergent use of similar gait patterns by distinct groups of animals points to universal physical and physiological principles that operate beyond taxonomic limits and shape common solutions to increase energetic efficiency.
