In the present work, the neutron beams produced via the $^3$H(p,n) $^3$He reaction, were studied at N.C.S.R. “Demokritos”. For detecting and monitoring the neutrons, the following reference reactions $^{238}$U(n,f), $^{235}$U(n,f) and $^{237}$Np(n,f) were used. Furthermore, a systematic study of the parasitic neutrons, produced via reactions on the target constituents, was performed. At the same time, the cross sections of the $^{232}$Th(n,f) reaction were deduced, in the energy range from 2 to 5.5 MeV. Seven actinide targets were used, coupled with seven Micromegas detectors, one for each target, for the detection of the fission fragments. The target-detector assembly was placed in an aluminum chamber filled with Ar:CO$_2$ (90:10) in atmospheric pressure and room temperature. Monte Carlo simulations with the MCNP6 code, coupled with the NeuSDesc and SRIM-2013 codes, were used for the estimation of the neutron beam incident at each target. Additional Monte Carlo simulations were carried out using the codes FLUKA and GEF, in order to determine the exact masses of the $^{232}$Th targets and the energy deposition of the fission fragments in the detector gas.

A primary goal of the upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is to measure the $\mathcal{O}(10)$ MeV neutrinos produced by a Galactic core-collapse supernova if one should occur during the lifetime of the experiment. The liquid-argon-based detectors planned for DUNE are expected to be uniquely sensitive to the $\nu_e$ component of the supernova flux, enabling a wide variety of physics and astrophysics measurements. A key requirement for a correct interpretation of these measurements is a good understanding of the energy-dependent total cross section $\sigma(E_\nu)$ for charged-current $\nu_e$ absorption on argon. In the context of a simulated extraction of supernova $\nu_e$ spectral parameters from a toy analysis, we investigate the impact of $\sigma(E_\nu)$ modeling uncertainties on DUNE's supernova neutrino physics sensitivity for the first time. We find that the currently large theoretical uncertainties on $\sigma(E_\nu)$ must be substantially reduced before the $\nu_e$ flux parameters can be extracted reliably: in the absence of external constraints, a measurement of the integrated neutrino luminosity with less than 10\% bias with DUNE requires $\sigma(E_\nu)$ to be known to about 5%. The neutrino spectral shape parameters can be known to better than 10% for a 20% uncertainty on the cross-section scale, although they will be sensitive to uncertainties on the shape of $\sigma(E_\nu)$. The BASE collaboration at the antiproton decelerator/ELENA facility of CERN compares the fundamental properties of protons and antiprotons with ultra-high precision. Using advanced Penning trap systems, we have measured the proton and antiproton magnetic moments with fractional uncertainties of 300 parts in a trillion (p.p.t.) and 1.5 parts in a billion (p.p.b.), respectively. The combined measurements improve the resolution of the previous best test in that sector by more than a factor of 3000. Very recently, we have compared the antiproton/proton charge-to-mass ratios with a fractional precision of 16 p.p.t., which improved the previous best measurement by a factor of 4.3. These results allowed us also to perform a differential matter/antimatter clock comparison test to limits better than $3\,$%. Our measurements enable us to set limits on 22 coefficients of CPT- and Lorentz-violating standard model extensions (SME) and to search for potentially asymmetric interactions between antimatter and dark matter. In this article, we review some of the recent achievements and outline recent progress towards a planned improved measurement of the antiproton magnetic moment with an at least tenfold improved fractional accuracy.[graphic not available: see fulltext][graphic not available: see fulltext]

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

The β decays from both the ground state and a long-lived isomer of In133 were studied at the ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS). With a hybrid detection system sensitive to β, γ, and neutron spectroscopy, the comparative partial half-lives (logft) have been measured for all their dominant β-decay channels for the first time, including a low-energy Gamow-Teller transition and several first-forbidden (FF) transitions. Uniquely for such a heavy neutron-rich nucleus, their β decays selectively populate only a few isolated neutron unbound states in Sn133. Precise energy and branching-ratio measurements of those resonances allow us to benchmark β-decay theories at an unprecedented level in this region of the nuclear chart. The results show good agreement with the newly developed large-scale shell model (LSSM) calculations. The experimental findings establish an archetype for the β decay of neutron-rich nuclei southeast of Sn132 and will serve as a guide for future theoretical development aiming to describe accurately the key β decays in the rapid-neutron capture (r-) process. sPHENIX is a next-generation detector experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, designed for a broad set of jet and heavy-flavor probes of the Quark-Gluon Plasma created in heavy ion collisions. In anticipation of the commissioning and first data-taking of the detector in 2023, a RIKEN-BNL Research Center (RBRC) workshop was organized to collect theoretical input and identify compelling aspects of the physics program. Emergent bulk properties of matter governed by the strong nuclear force give rise to physical phenomena across vastly different scales, ranging from the shape of atomic nuclei to the masses and radii of neutron stars. They can be accessed on Earth by measuring the spatial extent of the outer skin made of neutrons that characterises the surface of heavy nuclei. The isotope $^{208}$Pb, owing to its simple structure and neutron excess, has been in this context the target of many dedicated efforts. Here, we determine the neutron skin from measurements of particle distributions and their collective flow in $^{208}$Pb+$^{208}$Pb collisions at ultrarelativistic energy performed at the Large Hadron Collider, which are sensitive to the overall size of the colliding $^{208}$Pb ions. By means of state-of-the-art global analysis tools within the hydrodynamic model of heavy-ion collisions, we infer a neutron skin $\Delta r_{np}=0.217\pm0.058$ fm, consistent with nuclear theory predictions, and competitive in accuracy with a recent determination from parity-violating asymmetries in polarised electron scattering. We present an extended Bayesian analysis using Trajectum where the initial condition can now include binary scaling. For the far-from-equilibrium evolution before hydrodynamics we introduce an interpolation between free streaming and a holographically inspired evolution that exhibits fast hydrodynamization. We find strong evidence that binary scaling is incompatible with experimental data and find evidence that the holographic far-from-equilibrium evolution is preferred. Hot QCD physics studies the nuclear strong force under extreme temperature and densities. Experimentally these conditions are achieved via high-energy collisions of heavy ions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the past decade, a unique and substantial suite of data was collected at RHIC and the LHC, probing hydrodynamics at the nucleon scale, the temperature dependence of the transport properties of quark-gluon plasma, the phase diagram of nuclear matter, the interaction of quarks and gluons at different scales and much more. This document, as part of the 2023 nuclear science long range planning process, was written to review the progress in hot QCD since the 2015 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science, as well as highlight the realization of previous recommendations, and present opportunities for the next decade, building on the accomplishments and investments made in theoretical developments and the construction of new detectors. The study of radioisotopes as well as of highly charged ions is a very active and dynamic field. In both cases, the most sensitive probes involve species trapped in Penning or Paul traps after a series of production and separation steps that limit the types and lifetimes of species that can be investigated. We propose a novel production scheme that forms fully (or almost fully) stripped radionuclei in the form of highly charged ions (HCIs) directly in the trapping environment. The method extends the range of species, among them radioisotopes such as F21, Sn100, or Th229, that can be readily produced and investigated and is complementary to existing techniques. The study of radioisotopes as well as of highly charged ions is a very active and dynamic field. As particles traverse the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formed during a heavy ion collision they undergo energy loss depending on the distance travelled. We study several temperature- and velocity-weighted path length distributions of non-interacting particles as they traverse the plasma using the Trajectum heavy ion code, including those of back-to-back path lengths. We use event-shape engineering (ESE) in combination with in-plane versus out-of-plane selection to accurately control these path lengths. A series of experiments studying neutrinos from intense radioactive sources have reported a deficit in the measured event rate which, in combination, has reached a statistical significance of $\sim 5\sigma$. In this paper, we explore avenues for explaining this anomaly, both within the Standard Model and beyond. First, we discuss possible biases in the predicted cross section for the detection reaction $\nu_e + ^{71}\text{Ga} \to e^- + ^{71}\text{Ge}$, which could arise from mismeasurement of the inverse process, $^{71}\text{Ge}$ decay, or from the presence of as yet unknown low-lying excited states of $^{71}\text{Ga}$. The latter would imply that not all $^{71}\text{Ge}$ decays go to the ground state of $^{71}\text{Ga}$, so the extraction of the ground state-to-ground state matrix element relevant for neutrino capture on gallium would be incorrect. Second, we scrutinize the measurement of the source intensity in gallium experiments, and we point out that a $\sim 2\%$ error in the branching ratios for $^{51}\text{Cr}$ decay would be enough to explain the anomaly. Third, we investigate the calibration of the radiochemical germanium extraction efficiency as a possible origin of anomaly. Finally, we outline several new explanations beyond the Standard Model, including scenarios with sterile neutrinos coupled to fuzzy dark matter or to dark energy, as well as a model with decaying sterile neutrinos. In this work we present a full comparison of all semi-inclusive muon and electron neutrino cross sections with $^{40}$Ar target measured by the MicroBooNE Collaboration with the predictions of an unfactorized model based on the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation (RDWIA) and the SuSAv2-MEC model implemented in the neutrino event generator GENIE. The predictions based on the RDWIA approach with a realistic description of the initial state and a phenomenological relativistic complex optical potential for the description of final state interactions describe better the measured cross sections than GENIE-SuSAv2 and RDWIA with a purely real potential.

We demonstrate that the isotope shift in isotopomers of diatomic molecules, where the nucleus of one of its constituent atoms is replaced by another isotope, can be expressed as the sum of a field shift and a mass shift, similar to the atomic case. We show that a linear relation holds between atomic and molecular isotopes shifts, thus extending the King-plot analysis to molecular isotope shifts. Optical isotope shifts in YbF and ZrO and infrared isotope shifts in SnH are analyzed with a molecular King-plot approach, utilizing Yb$^{+}$ and Zr$^{+}$ ionic isotope shifts and charge radii of Sn obtained with non-optical methods. The changes in the mean-squared nuclear charge radii $\delta \langle r^2 \rangle$ of $^{170-174,176}$Yb and $^{90-92,94,96}$Zr extracted from the molecular transitions are found to be in excellent agreement with the values from the spectroscopy of Yb$^{+}$ and Zr$^{+}$, respectively. On the contrary, in the case of the vibrational-rotational transition in SnH, no sensitivity to the nuclear volume could be deduced within the experimental resolution, which makes it unsuitable for the extraction of nuclear charge radii but provides insights into the molecular electronic wave function not accessible via other methods. This note describes systematic investigations of isotope production channels in thick targets exposed to the PS Booster (PSB) beam at ISOLDE. Recent experimental results have shown that new important radionuclide beams could be produced such as Pb-nat(p,x)Hg-208 in thick lead targets. We introduce in this note calculations of the production yield of isotopes generated from the creation and re-interaction of α particles in thick lead, bismuth, thorium and uranium targets irradiated by the 1.4 GeV proton beam delivered from the CERN PS Booster at ISOLDE. It gives the production yields of several isotopes that are not directly predicted with FLUKA and its RESNUCLEI production card while keeping a reasonable CPU time. These isotopes are particularly produced from (α, xp) and (3H, yp) reactions, with x = 4, 5, 6 and y = 3, 4, 5. The production yields have been calculated for Pb-208, Bi-209, Th-232 and U-238 target nuclei. The TENDL-2019 library has been used to recover the production cross-sections together with the afore-mentioned version of FLUKA to score the α and 3H fluences. The calculation method was verified with the FLUKA predictions for the Bi-209(α,2n) reaction and the At-211 production yield, an isotope of high interest in nuclear medicine, as well as with the radionuclides which are produced via (3H,3p) and (α,2p) reactions. The computation and experimental data are in good agreement, providing an alternative method to evaluate the inventories of radionuclides of potential interest for target waste management, and for the physics and medical programs at ISOLDE and MEDICIS.

A wide range of dark matter candidates have been proposed and are actively being searched for in a large number of experiments, both at high (TeV) and low (sub meV) energies. One dark matter candidate, a deeply bound $uuddss$ sexaquark, $S$, with mass $\sim 2$ GeV (having the same quark content as the hypothesized H-dibaryon, but long lived) is particularly difficult to explore experimentally. In this paper, we propose a scheme in which such a state could be produced at rest through the formation of $\bar{p}-^3$He antiprotonic atoms and their annihilation into $S$ + $K^+K^+\pi^-$, identified both through the unique tag of a S=+2, Q=+1 final state, as well as through full kinematic reconstruction of the final state recoiling against it., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Phase transitions in a non-perturbative regime can be studied by ab initio Lattice Field Theory methods. The status and future research directions for LFT investigations of Quantum Chromo-Dynamics under extreme conditions are reviewed, including properties of hadrons and of the hypothesized QCD axion as inferred from QCD topology in different phases. We discuss phase transitions in strong interactions in an extended parameter space, and the possibility of model building for Dark Matter and Electro-Weak Symmetry Breaking. In ultra-relativistic hadronic collisions, direct photons are those photons that are directly produced in elementary processes and act as a valuable tool to test perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) predictions. Since these photons are produced directly from parton–parton hard scatterings, they can be used to constrain the parton distribution functions (PDFs). In leading order pQCD, direct photons are mainly produced via 2→2 processes, namely quark–gluon Compton scattering and quark–antiquark annihilation. These photons together with the fragmentation or bremsstrahlung photons are referred to as the prompt photons [1]. Photons from the 2→2 processes provide clear constraints of the underlying parton kinematics, but making a clean separation between the different types of prompt photons is difficult. Additionally, measurements of direct photons are complicated due to the presence of a large photon background from hadron decays, especially from π 0 and η mesons. A selection called ”isolation criterion”, which is based on a threshold on the contributions of transverse energy/momentum from particles inside a cone around the candidate photon, is applied to suppress the decay and fragmentation photons. This has led to the prescription of ”isolated photons”.

We present the analytic expressions for the two-loop form factors for the production or decay of pseudo-scalar quarkonia, in a scheme where the quarks are produced at threshold. We consider the two-loop amplitude for the process $\gamma \gamma \leftrightarrow {^1S_0^{[1]}}$, that was previously known only numerically, as well as for the processes $gg \leftrightarrow {^1S_0^{[1]}}$, $\gamma g \leftrightarrow {^1S_0^{[8]}}$ and $gg \leftrightarrow {^1S_0^{[8]}}$, which have not been computed before. The two-loop corrections to $gg \leftrightarrow {^1S_0^{[1]}}$ are the last missing ingredients for a full NNLO calculation of $\eta_Q$ hadro-production. We discuss how the singularity structure of the amplitudes is affected by the threshold kinematics, which in particular introduces Coulomb singularities. In this context, we first show how the usual structure of the infrared singularities degenerates at threshold kinematics, and then extract the anomalous dimensions governing the Coulomb singularities for colour-singlet and octet channels, the latter being presented here for the first time. The feasibility of observing ditauonium, the bound state of two tau leptons, at $e^+e^-$ colliders (BES III at $\sqrt{s} = 3.78$ GeV, Belle II at $\sqrt{s} = 10.6$ GeV, a future super tau-charm factory (STCF) at $\sqrt{s} \approx 2m_{\tau}$, and the FCC-ee at $\sqrt{s} = 91.2$ GeV) as well as in hadronic and photon-photon collisions at the LHC, is studied. Cross sections and expected yields for spin-0 para- ($\mathcal{T}_0$) and spin-1 ortho- ($\mathcal{T}_1$) ditauonium are presented for nine different production and decay processes. Para-ditauonium can be observed at the FCC-ee via photon fusion in its diphoton decay ($\gamma\gamma\to\mathcal{T}_0\to\gamma\gamma$). Ortho-ditauonium can be observed at STCF via $e^+e^-\to\mathcal{T}_1\to\mu^+\mu^-$, where a threshold scan with monochromatized beams can also provide a very precise extraction of the tau lepton mass with a $\mathcal{O}(25$ keV) uncertainty or less. Observing pp $\to \mathcal{T}_1(\mu^+\mu^-)+X$ at the LHC is possible by identifying its displaced vertex with a good control of the combinatorial dimuon background. Molecules containing short-lived, radioactive nuclei are uniquely positioned to enable a wide range of scientific discoveries in the areas of fundamental symmetries, astrophysics, nuclear structure, and chemistry. Recent advances in the ability to create, cool, and control complex molecules down to the quantum level, along with recent and upcoming advances in radioactive species production at several facilities around the world, create a compelling opportunity to coordinate and combine these efforts to bring precision measurement and control to molecules containing extreme nuclei. In this manuscript, we review the scientific case for studying radioactive molecules, discuss recent atomic, molecular, nuclear, astrophysical, and chemical advances which provide the foundation for their study, describe the facilities where these species are and will be produced, and provide an outlook for the future of this nascent field.

Detailed γ-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope 28Ne has been performed for the first time using the one-neutron removal reaction from 29Ne on a liquid hydrogen target at 240 MeV/nucleon. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for 28Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N=20 and N=28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain. We study the role of short-range correlations, as well as pion and rho loops governing long-range RPA correlations, in nuclear matter properties and response functions. We use an adapted formulation of the Brueckner G-matrix approach to generate a pair correlation function satisfying the Beg--Agassi--Gal theorem, providing a natural cutoff to the loop integrals. We present results for the case of a relativistic chiral theory, including the effects of quark confinement and of the chirally broken vacuum in a version where parameters are directly connected to QCD observables or constrained by well-established hadron phenomenology. This provides a unified and coherent view of the nuclear matter equation of state and the effect of correlations on neutrino--nucleus scattering.

International audience; The unstable N=42 nucleus 72Zn has been studied using multiple safe Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics. The experiment was performed at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN making first use of the silicon detector array C-REX in combination with the γ-ray spectrometer Miniball. The high angular coverage of C-REX allowed to determine the reduced transition strengths for the decay of the yrast 01+, 21+ and 41+ as well as of the 02+ and 22+ states in 72Zn. The quadrupole moments of the 21+, 41+ and 22+ states were extracted. Using model independent quadrupole invariants, the ground state of 72Zn was found to have an average deformation in the γ degree of freedom close to maximum triaxiality. In comparison to experimental data in zinc isotopes with N<40, the collectivity of the 41+ state in neutron-rich 72Zn is significantly larger, indicating a collective yrast band based on the ground state of 72Zn. In contrast, a low experimental B(E2;02+→21+) strength was determined, indicating a different structure for the 02+ state. Shell-model calculations propose a 02+ state featuring a larger fraction of the (spherical) N=40 closed-shell configuration in its wave function than for the 01+ ground state. The results were also compared with beyond mean field calculations which corroborate the large deformation in the γ degree of freedom, while pointing to a more deformed 02+ state. These experimental and theoretical findings establish the importance of the γ degree of freedom in the ground state of 72Zn, located between the 68,70Ni nuclei that have spherical ground states, and 76Ge, which has a rigid triaxial shape.

In ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, a hot and dense nuclear state of matter known as the quark–gluon plasma (QGP) is formed, in which quarks and gluons are no longer confined within hadrons. The space–time evolution of the QGP is known to be governed by hydrodynamic equations of state. In a recent publication, it was suggested that skewness of event-by-event (e-by-e) mean transverse momentum (hpTi) distribution can help to study the hydrodynamic behaviour of the system produced in heavy-ion collisions. Hydrodynamic simulations predict that the hpTi fluctuations are positively skewed, larger than in the independent particle emission scenario. The skewness of the hpTi fluctuations has been related to the fluctuations of initial state energy density. Event-by-event fluctuations in the initial state of a collision arise due to fluctuations in the positions of participating nucleons. In this work, the first measurements of skewness of e-by-e hpTi distribution are presented, as a function of average charged-particle pseudorapidity density hdNch/dηi|η

Hadronic resonances are short-lived particles which decay via strong interaction. During the hadron gas phase that follows the hadronisation of the medium created in heavyion collisions and spans from the chemical to the kinetic freeze-out, resonances having lifetimes comparable to the duration of the hadronic phase take part in two processes, called regeneration and rescattering. These effects lead to the modification of their yields, which depend on their lifetime, the hadronic cross section of their decay products, and the hadronic phase lifetime. Rescatterings with other hadrons in the medium alter the momentum of the resonance decay products and prevent the reconstruction of the resonance with an invariant-mass analysis. In turn, pseudoelastic scattering could also regenerate the resonance leading to an enhancement of their yields. Both these competing effects determine the final yield of the resonances at kinetic freeze out. These processes can be studied from the ratios of the yields of resonances to stable particles having same quark content, as a function of system size and comparing with model predictions with and without hadronic interactions.

The excitation energy of the 1/2$^-$ isomer in $^{99}$In at ${N=50}$ is measured to be 671(37) keV and the mass uncertainty of the 9/2$^+$ ground state is significantly reduced using the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer at ISOLDE/CERN. The measurements exploit a major improvement in the resolution of the multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The results reveal an intriguing constancy of the $1/2^-$ isomer excitation energies in neutron-deficient indium that persists down to the $N = 50$ shell closure, even when all neutrons are removed from the valence shell. This trend is used to test large-scale shell model, \textit{ab initio}, and density functional theory calculations. The models have difficulties describing both the isomer excitation energies and ground-state electromagnetic moments along the indium chain., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Centrality-dependent measurements of hadron and jet cross section attenuation in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei can shed new light on the physics of final-state interactions in the nuclear matter, including the path-length dependence of the in-medium parton shower formation and evolution. Recent simulation studies have demonstrated the feasibility of experimental centrality determination in $e$A reactions at the electron-ion collider via neutron detection in the zero-degree calorimeter. Motivated by these results, we present the first theoretical calculation of the production rate modification for hadrons and jets in central and peripheral $e$Pb collisions. We find that the variation in the suppression of inclusive jet cross section as a function of centrality is less than a factor of two. In more differential measurements, such as the distribution of hadrons versus the hadronization fraction $z_h$, the difference can be enhanced up to an order of magnitude., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We study the discovery potential of massive graviton-like spin-2 particles coupled to standard model fields, produced in photon-photon collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as well as in electron-positron ($e^+e^-$) collisions, within an effective theory with and without universal couplings. Our focus is on a massive graviton G coupled to the electromagnetic field, which decays via $\mathrm{G}\to \gamma \gamma$ and leads to a resonant excess of diphotons over the light-by-light scattering continuum at the LHC, and of triphoton final states at $e^+e^-$ colliders. Based on similar searches performed for pseudoscalar axion-like particles (ALPs), and taking into account the different cross sections, $\gamma \gamma$ partial widths, and decay kinematics of the pseudoscalar and tensor particles, we reinterpret existing experimental bounds on the ALP-$\gamma$ coupling into G-$\gamma$ ones. Using the available data, exclusion limits on the graviton-photon coupling are set down to $g_{\mathrm{G}\gamma\gamma}\approx 1$--0.05~TeV$^{-1}$ for masses $m_\mathrm{G} \approx 100$~MeV--2~TeV. Such bounds can be improved by factors of 100 at Belle~II in the low-mass region, and of 4 at the HL-LHC at high masses, with their expected full integrated luminosities., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

The problem of nucleon-nucleon correlations and meson exchange currents has been vividly debated in connection with the neutrino-nucleus cross sections. In this work we focus on nucleon-nucleon correlations by discussing a formal correspondence between the approaches based on independent particles and the ab initio approaches involving correlated wave functions. We use a general technique based on unitary transformation mapping the Fermion operators relative to bare nucleons into quasi-particle operators relative to dressed nucleons. We derive formulas for spectral functions, response functions, momentum distribution, separation energy, general enough to be applied with any kind of effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. We establish the relation between the non-energy-weighted sum rule and the Fermi sea depopulation. With our tools we evaluate whether approaches based on effective interactions are compatible with the expected amount of correlations coming from ab initio calculations. This thesis addresses how heavy-quark hadronisation and high-energy partons are affected by the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a hot and dense medium created in lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at the LHC. Data from the CMS detector are analysed to achieve the first observation of Bc+ mesons in heavy-ion collisions. Building on an existing scaling law from a model of radiative energy loss in the QGP, a second scaling law is also brought to light. The analysis of CMS data from 2017 proton-proton and 2018 PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair leads to the observation of Bc+ -> (J/psi -> mu+mu−) mu+ nu_mu decays, and to the measurement of the Bc+ nuclear modification factor in two bins of the trimuon transverse momentum (pT) or of the PbPb collision centrality. It is presented in this thesis and summarised in Ref. [1]. Three main backgrounds are described either with simulation or with specifically-designed data-driven samples. A boosted decision tree (BDT) is trained on the selected background and simulated signal candidates. A likelihood fit is run on signal and background templates, binned in BDT, trimuon invariant mass, and pT or centrality. The acceptance and efficiency of the selection chain are evaluated iteratively in each pT or centrality bin with the simulated signal, whose pT spectrum is first corrected with the one measured in a preliminary analysis. The Bc+ meson is found to be less suppressed than all measured open and hidden heavy flavour mesons, except the B0s meson. The results also hint at a softening of the pT spectrum in PbPb collisions. These may indicate that heavy-quark recombination is a significant Bc+ production mechanism. At high pT (> 10−15 GeV), radiative energy loss should be the dominant source of suppression of hadrons in the QGP. An existing model for the radiative energy loss of partons, based on the BDMPS medium-induced gluon spectrum, predicts a universal pT-dependence of the nuclear modification factor [2]. This fits collected measurements in systems of various geometric configurations and energies, from which the corresponding mean energy losses are determined [3]. A new scaling law is found consistent with the gathered measurements: it links the extracted mean energy loss with the average path length in the medium and the charged particle multiplicity. This leads to the extraction of medium expansion and diffusion properties, and could allow for a prediction of the azimuthal asymmetry coefficient v2 at high pT. This thesis is structured with an introduction (chapter 1) travelling from general physics considerations to concepts needed in the following, then a first part concerning the Bc analysis, and a second part concerning my work on the phenomenology of energy loss. Chapter 2 motivates the experimental search for Bc mesons in heavy ion collisions. Chapter 3 presents the LHC and the CMS detector, and the overall analysis strategy (section 3.3). Chapter 4 deals with the backgrounds blurring the Bc signal, and chapter 5 details the candidate selection established to discriminate against them. Chapter 6 shows the extraction of the signal yields from a template fit of the trimuon mass distributions. Chapter 7 computes the correction of the observed yields for the acceptance and efficiency of the signal reconstruction and selection. Chapter 8 summarises the sources of uncertainties and how they are estimated. Chapter 9 shows the results and their interpretation, including the Bc nuclear modification factor. The momentum distribution of particle production in heavy-ion collisions encodes information about thermalization processes in the early-stage quark-gluon plasma. We use kinetic theory to study the far-from-equilibrium evolution of an expanding plasma with an anisotropic momentum-space distribution. We identify slow and fast degrees of freedom in the far-from-equilibrium plasma from the evolution of moments of this distribution. At late times, the slow modes correspond to hydrodynamic degrees of freedom and are naturally gapped from the fast modes by the inverse of the relaxation time, $\tau_R^{-1}$. At early times, however, there are an infinite number of slow modes with a gap inversely proportional to time, $\tau^{-1}$. From the evolution of the slow modes we generalize the paradigm of the far-from-equilibrium attractor to vector and tensor components of the energy-momentum tensor, and even to higher moments of the distribution function that are not part of the hydrodynamic evolution. We predict that initial-state momentum anisotropy decays slowly in the far-from-equilibrium phase and may persist until the relaxation time., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present the implementation and validation of the Hartree-Fock continuum random phase approximation (HF-CRPA) model in the GENIE neutrino-nucleus interaction event generator and a comparison of the subsequent predictions to experimental measurements of lepton kinematics from interactions with no mesons in the final state. These predictions are also compared to those of other models available in GENIE. It is shown that, with respect to these models, HF-CRPA predicts a significantly different evolution of the cross section when moving between different interaction targets, when considering incoming antineutrinos compared to neutrinos and when changing neutrino energies. These differences are most apparent for interactions with low-energy and momentum transfer. It is also clear that the impact of nucleon correlations within the HF-CRPA framework is very different than in GENIE’s standard implementation of RPA corrections. Since many neutrino oscillation experiments rely on their input model to extrapolate between targets, flavors, and neutrino energies, the newly implemented HF-CRPA model provides a useful means to verify that such differences between models are appropriately covered in oscillation analysis systematic error budgets. Mass measurements continue to provide invaluable information for elucidating nuclear structure and scenarios of astrophysical interest. The transition region between the $Z = 20$ and $28$ proton shell closures is particularly interesting due to the onset and evolution of nuclear deformation as nuclei become more neutron rich. This provides a critical testing ground for emerging ab-initio nuclear structure models. Here, we present high-precision mass measurements of neutron-rich chromium isotopes using the sensitive electrostatic Multiple-Reflection Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) at TRIUMF's Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear Science (TITAN) facility. Our high-precision mass measurements of $^{59, 61-63}$Cr confirm previous results, and the improved precision in measurements of $^{64-65}$Cr refine the mass surface beyond N=40. With the ab initio in-medium similarity renormalization group, we examine the trends in collectivity in chromium isotopes and give a complete picture of the N=40 island of inversion from calcium to nickel., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Oxygen ($^{16}$O) ions are planned to be injected at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in its next runs, and a day of physics run is anticipated for O+O collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 7 TeV. As the system size of O+O collisions has the final state multiplicity overlap with those produced in pp, p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions, the study of global properties in O+O collisions may provide a deeper insight into the heavy-ion-like behavior observed in small collision systems and its similarities/differences with a larger system like Pb+Pb collisions. In the present work, we report the predictions for global properties in O+O collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 7 TeV using a multi-phase transport model (AMPT). We report the mid-rapidity charged-particle multiplicity, transverse mass, Bjorken energy density, pseudo-rapidity distributions, squared speed of sound, transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) spectra, the kinetic freeze-out parameters, and $p_{\rm T}$-differential particle ratio as a function of collision centrality. Further, we have studied the transverse momentum-dependent elliptic flow of charged particles. The results are shown for Woods-Saxon and harmonic oscillator nuclear density profiles. In addition, we have compared the results with an $\alpha$-clustered structure incorporated inside the oxygen nucleus. Average charged-particle multiplicity and the Bjorken energy density show a significant increase in most central collisions for the harmonic oscillator density profile, while other global properties show less dependence on the density profiles considered in this work. The results from the $\alpha$-clustered structure incorporated inside the oxygen nucleus show similar initial energy density and final charged-particle multiplicity as observed for the harmonic oscillator density profile., Comment: Same as the published version

In this study, the momentum-kick model is used to understand the ridge behaviours in dihadron $\Delta\eta$--$\Delta\varphi$ correlations recently reported by the LHC in high-multiplicity proton-proton (pp) collisions. The kick stand model is based on a momentum kick by leading jets to partons in the medium close to the leading jets. The medium where partons move freely is assumed in the model regardless of collision systems. This helps us apply the method to small systems like pp collisions in a simple way. Also, the momentum transfer is purely kinematic and this provides us a strong way to approach the ridge behaviour analytically. There are already several results with this approach in high-energy heavy-ion collisions from the STAR and PHENIX at RHIC and from the CMS at LHC. The momentum-kick model is extended to the recent ridge results in high-multiplicity pp collisions with the ATLAS and CMS at LHC. We use dispersive techniques to provide a model-independent parametrisation of the form factors that can be used in the whole kinematic region. We use lattice QCD data to constrain the free parameters in the form factors expansion, which is further constrained by endpoint relations, dispersive bounds, and SCET relations. We analyse different scenarios, where we expand the form factors up to different orders, and their viability. Finally, we use our results to obtain predictions for some observables in $\Lb\to\L(1520)\ell^+\ell^-$ decays, as the differential branching ratio, the forward-backwards lepton asymmetry and the branching ratio of $\Lambda_b\to\L(1520)\gamma$. Finally, we provide a python notebook based on the software \texttt{EOS} to reproduce our result. We perform an analysis of Λ$_{b}$ → Λ(1520) local form factors. Experimental data of charged current inclusive neutrino cross sections on argon as a function of different variables have recently appeared. We have compared them to our theoretical approach. Overall we find an agreement in spite of a tendency of underestimation in some specific regions. A new aspect is the availability of data in terms of the energy transfer to the nucleus, which allows a better separation of the different reaction mechanisms. We explain the deterioration of agreement in specific kinematical conditions by the absence in our model of two-pion production and other inelastic channels, more important for MicroBooNE than for T2K., Comment: Published version

The automated generation of arbitrary exclusive final states produced via photon fusion in ultraperipheral high-energy collisions of protons and/or nuclei is implemented in the MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and HelacOnia Monte Carlo codes. Cross sections are calculated in the equivalent photon approximation using $\gamma$ fluxes derived from electric dipole and charge form factors, and incorporating hadronic survival probabilities. Multiple examples of $\gamma\gamma$ cross sections computed with this setup, named gamma-UPC, are presented for proton-proton, proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the Large Hadron Collider and Future Circular Collider. Total photon-fusion cross sections for the exclusive production of spin-0,2 resonances (quarkonia, ditauonium, and Higgs boson; as well as axions and gravitons), and for pairs of particles ($J/\psi J/\psi$, WW, ZZ, Z$\gamma$, $t\bar{t}$, HH) are presented. Differential cross sections for exclusive dileptons and light-by-light scattering are compared to LHC data. We use the Hamiltonian formulation of kinetic theory to perform a stability analysis of non-thermal fixed points in a non-Abelian plasma. We construct a perturbative expansion of the Fokker-Planck collision kernel in an adiabatic approximation and show that the (next-to-)leading order solutions reproduce the known non-thermal fixed point scaling exponents. Working at next-to-leading order, we derive the stability equations for scaling exponents and find the relaxation rate to the non-thermal fixed point. This approach provides the basis for an understanding of the prescaling phenomena observed in QCD kinetic theory and non-relativistic Bose gas systems., 9 pages, 2 figures. Transverse spherocity is an event shape observable, which separates the events based on their geometrical shapes. In this work, we use transverse spherocity to study the identified light flavor production in heavy-ion collisions using A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model. We obtain the elliptic flow coefficients for pions, kaons and protons in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV as a function of transverse spherocity and collision centrality. Also, we study the number of constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling of elliptic flow which interprets the dominance of the quark degrees of freedom at the early stages of the collision. We observe a clear dependence of the elliptic flow for identified particles on transverse spherocity. It is found that the NCQ-scaling is strongly violated in events with low transverse spherocity compared to transverse spherocity-integrated events, confirming the fragmentation-based hadronization mechanism for high-momentum partons involved in the dynamics of jetty-like events., Same as the published version. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2008.13616

Nuclear charge radii are sensitive probes of different aspects of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and the bulk properties of nuclear matter; thus, they provide a stringent test and challenge for nuclear theory. The calcium region has been of particular interest, as experimental evidence has suggested a new magic number at $N = 32$ [1-3], while the unexpectedly large increases in the charge radii [4,5] open new questions about the evolution of nuclear size in neutron-rich systems. By combining the collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy method with $\beta$-decay detection, we were able to extend the charge radii measurement of potassium ($Z =19$) isotopes up to the exotic $^{52}$K ($t_{1/2}$ = 110 ms), produced in minute quantities. Our work provides the first charge radii measurement beyond $N = 32$ in the region, revealing no signature of the magic character at this neutron number. The results are interpreted with two state-of-the-art nuclear theories. For the first time, a long sequence of isotopes could be calculated with coupled-cluster calculations based on newly developed nuclear interactions. The strong increase in the charge radii beyond $N = 28$ is not well captured by these calculations, but is well reproduced by Fayans nuclear density functional theory, which, however, overestimates the odd-even staggering effect. These findings highlight our limited understanding on the nuclear size of neutron-rich systems, and expose pressing problems that are present in some of the best current models of nuclear theory., Comment: submitted version; revision accepted in Nature Physics

This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. Due to the large variations of chemical compositions in electronic material, the estimation of the radionuclide inventory following irradiation represents a technical challenge at CERN high-energy particle accelerators. In particular, the activation of printed circuit boards is of concern to the CERN experiments as they are widely used for various purposes ranging from safety systems to sub-detector controls. Because of maintenance operations, part of this equipment has to be removed from the accelerator machines. The literature provides a variety of compositions for electronic materials, leaving the problematic selection of the most appropriate composition for an activation study to the reader. In this article, we discuss two reference chemical compositions on the basis of a statistical analysis of large datasets of gamma spectroscopy results, and on ActiWiz calculations which take into account different activation scenarios at CERN. These results can be extended to electronic material irradiated in other particle accelerators.

I give an overview of recent developments in the study of the coupling of the QCD axion to nucleons and other octet baryons. I demonstrate how axions can be included into heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, and present recent numerical results for the several axion-baryon couplings in SU(2) and SU(3) chiral perturbation theory for the Kim--Shifman--Vainstein--Zakharov (KSVZ) and the Dine--Fischler--Srednicki--Zhitnitsky (DFSZ) axion model., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure to be published in conference proceedings RDP online PhD school and workshop "Aspects of Symmetry'' (Regio2021), 8-12 November 2021

The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is an algorithm to compute ground and excited state energy of quantum many-body systems. A key component of the algorithm and an active research area is the construction of a parametrized trial wavefunction -- a so called variational ansatz. The wavefunction parametrization should be expressive enough, i.e. represent the true eigenstate of a quantum system for some choice of parameter values. On the other hand, it should be trainable, i.e. the number of parameters should not grow exponentially with the size of the system. Here, we apply VQE to the problem of finding ground and excited state energies of the odd-odd nucleus $^6$Li. We study the effects of ordering fermionic excitation operators in the unitary coupled clusters ansatz on the VQE algorithm convergence by using only operators preserving the $J_z$ quantum number. The accuracy is improved by two order of magnitude in the case of descending order. We first compute optimal ansatz parameter values using a classical state-vector simulator with arbitrary measurement accuracy and then use those values to evaluate energy eigenstates of $^6$Li on a superconducting quantum chip from IBM. We post-process the results by using error mitigation techniques and are able to reproduce the exact energy with an error of 3.8% and 0.1% for the ground state and for the first excited state of $^6$Li, respectively., 9 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

We study the near-threshold $J/\psi$ meson production on protons and nuclei by considering incoherent direct non-resonant $K^-p \to {J/\psi}\Lambda$ and two-step resonant ${K^-}p \to P_{cs}(4459)^0 \to {J/\psi}\Lambda$ charmonium production processes. We calculate the absolute excitation functions, energy and momentum distributions for the non-resonant, resonant and for the combined (non-resonant plus resonant) production of $J/\psi$ mesons off protons as well as off carbon and tungsten target nuclei at near-threshold incident antikaon energies by considering these elementary production channels as well as by assuming the spin-parity assignment of the hidden-charm resonance $P_{cs}(4459)^0$ with strangeness as $J^P=(3/2)^-$ within six different scenarios for the branching ratio $Br[P_{cs}(4459)^0 \to {J/\psi}\Lambda]$ of the decay $P_{cs}(4459)^0 \to {J/\psi}\Lambda$. We show that the combined observables considered reveal definite sensitivity to these scenarios, which means that they may be an important tool to provide further evidence for the existence of the pentaquark $P_{cs}(4459)^0$ resonance and to get valuable information on its decay rate to the ${J/\psi}\Lambda$ final state. We present a strategy based on the step-scaling technique to study non-perturbatively thermal QCD up to very high temperatures. As a first concrete application, we compute the flavour non-singlet meson screening masses at 12 temperatures covering the range from $T \sim 1$ GeV up to $\sim 160$ GeV in the theory with three massless quarks. The calculation is carried out by Monte Carlo simulations on the lattice by considering large spatial extensions in order to have negligible finite volume effects. For each temperature we have simulated 3 or 4 values of the lattice spacing, so as to perform the continuum limit extrapolation with confidence at a few permille accuracy. Chiral symmetry restoration manifests itself in our results through the degeneracy of the vector and the axial vector channels and of the scalar and the pseudoscalar ones. In the entire range of temperatures explored, the meson screening masses deviate from the free theory result, $2 \pi T$, by at most a few percent. These deviations, however, cannot be explained by the known leading term in the QCD coupling constant $g$ up to the highest temperature, where other contributions are still very relevant. In particular the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting turns out to be of $O(g^4)$ in the entire range explored, and it remains clearly visible up to the highest temperature, where the two screening masses are still significantly different within our numerical precision. The pattern of different contributions that we have found explains why it has been difficult in the past to match non-perturbative lattice results at $T \sim 1$ GeV with the analytic behaviour at asymptotically high temperatures., Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures. The European physical journal / C 82(8), 755 (2022). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-022-10715-0, Azimuthal correlations in $\mathrm {Z} +$jet production at large transverse momenta are computed by matching Parton-Branching (PB) TMD parton distributions and showers with NLO calculations via MCatNLO. The predictions are compared with those for dijet production in the same kinematic range. The azimuthal correlations $\Delta \phi $ between the Z boson and the leading jet are steeper compared to those in dijet production at transverse momenta $\mathcal{O}(100)$ GeV , while they become similar for very high transverse momenta ${{\mathcal {O}}}(1000)$ GeV . The different patterns of $\mathrm {Z} +$jet and dijet azimuthal correlations can be used to search for potential factorization-breaking effects in the back-to-back region, which depend on the different color and spin structure of the final states and their interferences with the initial states. In order to investigate these effects experimentally, we propose to measure the ratio of the distributions in $\Delta \phi $ for $\mathrm {Z} +$jet- and multijet production at low and at high transverse momenta, and compare the results to predictions obtained assuming factorization. We examine the role of theoretical uncertainties by performing variations of the factorization scale, renormalization scale and matching scale.
