Abstract

The very recent concept of metaverse highlights the importance of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), which associates with a wide variety of applications in entertainment, medical treatment, and human-machine interfaces. The current VR/AR technologies mainly rely on visual interaction, while immersive experience in VR and AR highly demands sensational feedback, such as haptic and temperature with noticeable quality in wearable or even skin-integrated formarts. In this article, we report a wearable and flexible haptic interface based on electromagnetic vibrotactile actuators with high wearability and stability. By adopting double layers of copper (Cu) coils at the top and bottom of the magnetic disc, an enhanced electromagnetic field can be generated. Additionally, the intensity of the haptic feedback can be modulated according to sensed pressure in the virtual world by adjusting the value of power input and frequency. The actuator exhibits high stability and tolerance upon environmental, cyclic, and impact resistance tests. Finally, the actuators are developed into the soft VR interfaces for mounting on forearms, fingers, and hands to verify their superiority over conventional haptic actuators in the aspects of performance and applications. © 2014 IEEE.

Abstract

Flexible and bio‐integrated electronics have attracted great attention due to their enormous contributions to personalized medical devices. Power sources, serving as one of the most important components, have been suffering from many problems, including deficient biocompatibility, poor stretchability, and unstable electrical outputs under deformed conditions, which limits the practical applications in flexible and bio‐integrated electronics. Here, we reported a fully stretchable magnesium (Mg)–air battery based on dual‐ions‐conducting hydrogels (SDICH). The high‐performance battery enables long‐term operation with lighting 120 lighting emitting diodes (LEDs) for over 5 h. Benefiting from the advanced materials and mechanical designs, the battery exhibits stability electrical outputs under stretching, which allows to operate ordinarily under various mechanical deformations without performance decay. Furthermore, the great biocompatibility of the battery offers great opportunity for biomedical applications, which is demonstrated by a self‐adaption wound dressing system. The in vitro and in vivo results prove that the self‐adaption wound dressing can effectively prevent wound inflammation and promote wound healing. By exploiting thermal feedback mechanics, the system can adjust antibiotic release rate and dosage spontaneously according to the real‐time wound conditions. The proposed fully stretchable Mg–air battery and self‐adaption wound dressing display great potential in skin‐integrated electronics and personalized medicine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

21. Practical Implementation of Encoding Range Top-2 Queries

Abstract

We design a practical variant of an encoding for range Top-2 queries (RT2Q), and evaluate its performance. Given an array A[1,n] of n elements from a total order, the range Top-2 encoding problem is to construct a data structure that can answer RT2Q queries, which return the positions of the first and the second largest elements within a given query range of A, without accessing the array A at query time. Davoodi et al. [Phil. Trans. Royal Soc. A, 2016] proposed a (3.272n + o(n))-bit encoding, which answers RT2Q queries in O(1) time, while Gawrychowski and Nicholson [ICALP, 2015] gave an optimal (2.755n + (n))-bit encoding which doesn't support efficient queries. In this paper, we propose the first practical implementation of the encoding data structure for answering RT2Q. Our implementation is based on an alternative representation of Davoodi et al.’s data structure. The experimental results show that our implementation is efficient in practice, and gives improved time-space trade-offs compared to the indexing data structures (which keep the original array A as part of the data structure) for range maximum queries.

Abstract

The multi-valued resistive switching (RS) characteristics and mechanism in a WOx/AlOyheterojunction-based nonvolatile memory have been investigated. Although Al/WOx/Pt and Al/AlOy/Pt show different RS characteristics, bipolar and unipolar modes, respectively, the Al/WOx/AlOy/Pt structure shows both bipolar and unipolar RS characteristics, depending on the magnitude of the applied voltage. Three resistance states, which are defined as the low-resistance state (LRS), the mid-high-resistance state (mid-HRS) and the high-resistance state (HRS), are observed. A model combining two different RS mechanisms, oxygen ions involving the redox process at the interface and filamentary conduction, is proposed, and provides a simple physical concept to understand the multi-valued RS behavior. Our findings will be useful to design and optimize oxide heterojunction-based non-volatile RS memory devices.

Abstract

The surface free energy of rare earth oxides (REOs) has been debated during the last decade, with some reporting REOs to be intrinsically hydrophilic and others reporting hydrophobic. Here, we investigate the wettability and surface chemistry of pristine and smooth REO surfaces, conclusively showing that hydrophobicity stems from wettability transition due to volatile organic compound adsorption. We show that, for indoor ambient atmospheres and well-controlled saturated hydrocarbon atmospheres, the apparent advancing and receding contact angles of water increase with exposure time. We examined the surfaces comprehensively with multiple surface analysis techniques to confirm hydrocarbon adsorption and correlate it to wettability transition mechanisms. We demonstrate that both physisorption and chemisorption occur on the surface, with chemisorbed hydrocarbons promoting further physisorption due to their high affinity with similar hydrocarbon molecules.
