Terrestrial organisms and ecosystems are being exposed to new and rapidly changing combinations of solar UV radiation and other environmental factors because of ongoing changes in stratospheric ozone and climate. In this Quadrennial Assessment, we examine the interactive effects of changes in stratospheric ozone, UV radiation and climate on terrestrial ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles in the context of the Montreal Protocol. We specifically assess effects on terrestrial organisms, agriculture and food supply, biodiversity, ecosystem services and feedbacks to the climate system. Emphasis is placed on the role of extreme climate events in altering the exposure to UV radiation of organisms and ecosystems and the potential effects on biodiversity. We also address the responses of plants to increased temporal variability in solar UV radiation, the interactive effects of UV radiation and other climate change factors (e.g. drought, temperature) on crops, and the role of UV radiation in driving the breakdown of organic matter from dead plant material (i.e. litter) and biocides (pesticides and herbicides). Our assessment indicates that UV radiation and climate interact in various ways to affect the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems, and that by protecting the ozone layer, the Montreal Protocol continues to play a vital role in maintaining healthy, diverse ecosystems on land that sustain life on Earth. Furthermore, the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali Amendment are mitigating some of the negative environmental consequences of climate change by limiting the emissions of greenhouse gases and protecting the carbon sequestration potential of vegetation and the terrestrial carbon pool.

The Environmental Effects Assessment Panel of the Montreal Protocol under the United Nations Environment Programme evaluates effects on the environment and human health that arise from changes in the stratospheric ozone layer and concomitant variations in ultraviolet (UV) radiation at the Earth’s surface. The current update is based on scientific advances that have accumulated since our last assessment (Photochem and Photobiol Sci 20(1):1–67, 2021). We also discuss how climate change affects stratospheric ozone depletion and ultraviolet radiation, and how stratospheric ozone depletion affects climate change. The resulting interlinking effects of stratospheric ozone depletion, UV radiation, and climate change are assessed in terms of air quality, carbon sinks, ecosystems, human health, and natural and synthetic materials. We further highlight potential impacts on the biosphere from extreme climate events that are occurring with increasing frequency as a consequence of climate change. These and other interactive effects are examined with respect to the benefits that the Montreal Protocol and its Amendments are providing to life on Earth by controlling the production of various substances that contribute to both stratospheric ozone depletion and climate change.

The study of insect responses to colour has mainly focused on flying species and morphs, however colour cues are likely to be important for insect positioning within the canopy. We examine the role of illumination colour in canopy positioning of apterous Myzus persicae (Sulzer) using both a field experiment, utilising various UV-manipulating optical filters, and a laboratory experiment using video tracking of individuals illuminated by a variable intensity UVA-Blue-Green LED-array. In the field experiment, approximately twice as many aphids were located on exposed leaf surfaces under UV-deficient environments compared to UV-rich environments. The lab experiment showed all three M. persicae photoreceptors were involved in a visually-mediated feeding/avoidance behaviour. Highly UV-rich, green-deficient environments were up to 3 times as likely to trigger an avoidance behaviour compared to UV-absent, green-rich environments such as those found below the leaf surface. We show that apterous M. persicae use this, in addition to other cues, in order to locate feeding positions that minimise exposure to direct sunlight. This has relevance to both the fundamental understanding of photoprotective behaviour in Hemiptera as well as to applied research of crop production environments that disrupt pest behaviour. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

Advances in the manufacturing of plastic cladding for protected crop cultivation have resulted in wavelength selective plastics capable of manipulating the transmission of solar radiation to include ultraviolet (UV: 280-400 nm). Commercial growers already utilising these plastics report early maturity associated with warmer crops. We hypothesised that UV-B radiation causes partial stomatal closure that reduces stomatal conductance and transpiration rate, thereby increasing leaf temperature (relative to air temperature). We tested this hypothesis by investigating leaf gas exchange and temperature responses of individual tomato leaves to UV-B and UV-A radiation provided by UV lamps in a controlled environment. Transient (90 min) exposure to UV-B radiation decreased stomatal conductance but had minimal impact on photosynthesis, thus increasing leaf temperature and instantaneous water use efficiency. Should this enhanced water use efficiency also occur at a whole plant/canopy scale, these responses may benefit growers of protected crops in arid climates where plastic clad polytunnels are often utilised. © 2020 International Society for Horticultural Science. Changes in stratospheric ozone and climate over the past 40-plus years have altered the solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation conditions at the Earth’s surface. Ozone depletion has also contributed to climate change across the Southern Hemisphere. These changes are interacting in complex ways to affect human health, food and water security, and ecosystem services. Many adverse effects of high UV exposure have been avoided thanks to the Montreal Protocol with its Amendments and Adjustments, which have effectively controlled the production and use of ozone-depleting substances. This international treaty has also played an important role in mitigating climate change. Climate change is modifying UV exposure and affecting how people and ecosystems respond to UV; these effects will become more pronounced in the future. The interactions between stratospheric ozone, climate and UV radiation will therefore shift over time; however, the Montreal Protocol will continue to have far-reaching benefits for human well-being and environmental sustainability.

Current horticultural crops are increasingly grown under protective plastic claddings. These have historically been used to protect crops from abiotic stresses, however new challenges are emerging that present opportunities for innovative control technologies. Protected cropping already provides a favourable environment for pest and disease establishment. Coupled with high labour costs, restrictions in pesticide approval and introductions of new invasive species, development of new pest and disease control methods is of paramount importance. Claddings have been formulated to change the properties of solar illumination in the crop environment with wide ranging implications for crop, pest and pathogen. Properties that interfere with pest behaviour, leading to disrupted host location and lower pest load, can be exploited as part of an Integrated Pest Management system. This review provides a state-of-the-art summary of the field and laboratory studies that have focused on the direct effects of UV-attenuating film claddings on insect pests. It relates this to insect vision and the likely mechanisms of pest control. Ultimately, it provides a useful synthesis of the research completed to date, and recommends future research and agronomy directions.

Global change influences biogeochemical cycles within and between environmental compartments (i.e., the cryosphere, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and the atmosphere). A major effect of global change on carbon cycling is altered exposure of natural organic matter (NOM) to solar radiation, particularly solar UV radiation. In terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, NOM is degraded by UV and visible radiation, resulting in the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide, as well as a range of products that can be more easily degraded by microbes (photofacilitation). On land, droughts and land-use change can reduce plant cover causing an increase in exposure of plant litter to solar radiation. The altered transport of soil organic matter from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems also can enhance exposure of NOM to solar radiation. An increase in emission of CO2 from terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems due to the effects of global warming, such as droughts and thawing of permafrost soils, fuels a positive feedback on global warming. This is also the case for greenhouse gases other than CO2, including methane and nitrous oxide, that are emitted from terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. These trace gases also have indirect or direct impacts on stratospheric ozone concentrations. The interactive effects of UV radiation and climate change greatly alter the fate of synthetic and biological contaminants. Contaminants are degraded or inactivated by direct and indirect photochemical reactions. The balance between direct and indirect photodegradation or photoinactivation of contaminants is likely to change with future changes in stratospheric ozone, and with changes in runoff of coloured dissolved organic matter due to climate and land-use changes.

Quantitative variation in susceptibility to infection by the rust Coleosporium tussilaginis, and in reduction in growth owing to the infection, were determined in 30 clonally propagated genotypes of Tussilago farfara sampled from three geographically isolated sites, Arnhem (The Netherlands), Lancaster and Sheffield (both UK). Populations, and genotypes within populations showed no significant variation in intensity of disease after artificial inoculation under ideal conditions with a fungal isolate collected from the Lancaster population. By contrast, significant differences between and within populations were observed after natural secondary infection by spores produced from the artificially inoculated plants. Genotypes differed considerably in the reduction in growth caused by the infection, but this was not correlated with the extent of symptoms shown by the plants. Low resistance was associated with high tolerance, as in the Lancaster and Sheffield populations, while high resistance was associated with low tolerance, as in the Arnhem population. The evolutionary significance of these associations is discussed.
