As a popular tool for gene function characterization and gene therapy, RNA interference (RNAi)-based gene silencing has been increasingly explored for potential applications to control invasive species. At least two major hurdles exist when applying this approach to invasive plants: (1) the design and screening of species- and gene-specific biomacromolecules (i.e., gene-silencing agents or GSAs) made of DNA, RNA, or peptides that can suppress the expression of target genes efficiently, and (2) the delivery vehicle needed to penetrate plant cell walls and other physical barriers (e.g., leaf cuticles). In this study, we investigated the cell-penetrating peptide (CPP)-mediated delivery of multiple types of GSAs (e.g., double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), artificial microRNA (amiRNA), and antisense oligonucleotide (ASO)) to knock down a putative phytoene desaturase (PDS) gene in the invasive common reed (Phragmites australis spp. australis). Both microscopic and quantitative gene expression evidence demonstrated the CPP-mediated internalization of GSA cargos and transient suppression of PDS expression in both treated and systemic leaves up to 7 days post foliar application. Although various GSA combinations and application rates and frequencies were tested, we observed limitations, including low gene-silencing efficiency and a lack of physiological trait alteration, likely owing to low CPP payload capacity and the incomplete characterization of the PDS-coding genes (e.g., the recent discovery of two PDS paralogs) in P. australis. Our work lays a foundation to support further research toward the development of convenient, cost-effective, field-deployable, and environmentally benign gene-silencing technologies for invasive P. australis management. Globally, native saltmarshes are declining, while invasive saltmarshes are expanding rapidly. However, the underlying processes and driving mechanisms behind these trends remain poorly understood, particularly in rapidly silting coastal bays. Here, we investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics and influencing factors of native saltmarshes (Scirpus mariqueter and Phragmites australis) and invasive Spartina alterniflora in Yueqing Bay, eastern China, by interpreting Landsat series images during 1985-2023. Results showed that native saltmarshes significantly decreased from 632.24 ha to complete disappearance, while S. alterniflora expanded from zero to 2872.90 ha in Yueqing Bay during 1985-2023. Specifically, S. mariqueter experienced a notable decline from 1985 to 1995, subsequent growth between 2000 and 2005, and another reduction from 2005 to 2010. P. australis expanded from 2005 to 2010 but shrank from 2010 to 2015 as S. alterniflora encroached upon its habitats. By contrast, S. alterniflora consistently expanded annually, except when it was eradicated by human interference. Both natural factors and human activities influenced native and invasive saltmarshes; for instance, mudflat reclamation facilitated saltmarsh expansion by creating suitable habitats during a certain period, particularly for S. alterniflora. From 1984 to 2018, the coastline extended seaward, causing sedimentation and landward transformation, which contributed to the expansion of S. alterniflora. However, the 118.05 ha mangrove forests negatively impacted S. alterniflora , as planting mangroves often involves the removal of existing S. alterniflora. Additionally, maximum tidal range and mean annual temperature positively affected saltmarshes. Our study highlighted the influence of natural factors and human activities on the spatiotemporal dynamics of both native and invasive saltmarshes in rapidly silting bays, underscoring the urgent need for conservation, restoration, and management of native saltmarshes. Common reed (Phragmites australis) is a cosmopolitan species, though its dieback is a worldwide phenomenon. In order to assess the evolutionary role of phenotypic plasticity in a successful plant, the values and plasticity of photophysiological traits of Phragmites australis were investigated in the Lake Fertő wetlands at 5 sites with different degrees of reed degradation and along a seasonal sequence. On the one hand, along the established ecological degradation gradient, photophysiological traits of Phragmites changed significantly, affecting plant productivity, although no consistent gradient-type trends were observed. Gradual changes within a season in the values of photosynthetic traits were observed that were recorded in both degraded and stable stands, suggesting a universal response to seasonally changing environmental conditions that could not be overridden by the ecological gradient. On the other hand, reed plants exposed to different levels of degradation showed comparable physiological plasticity; there was no difference in trait variability between stable and degraded stands. This relatively uniform plasticity is likely to contribute to the resilience of reed plants by providing a wider range of adaptive traits under different conditions. In contrast, the 150-200% gradual change in photophysiological trait plasticity with senescence in Phragmites was also demonstrated, reflecting a more dynamic response of the photosynthetic apparatus to seasonal changes. Senescence affected the plasticity of plant traits independently of their degradation status, suggesting a more universal nature of seasonal changes. This research shows that under conditions of conservative resource use determined by stressful habitats, trait values respond to conditions, while trait plasticity shows minimal changes. Furthermore, phenological sequence significantly influenced both the values and the plasticity of the photosynthetic traits studied. Our results underline the impact of ecological degradation on reed physiology and highlight the importance of understanding both trait values and plasticity in plant responses to environmental and seasonal change. Salt marsh vegetation in the Yellow River Delta, including Phragmites australis (P. australis), Suaeda salsa (S. salsa), and Tamarix chinensis (T. chinensis), is essential for the stability of wetland ecosystems. In recent years, salt marsh vegetation has experienced severe degradation, which is primarily due to invasive species and human activities. Therefore, the accurate monitoring of the spatial distribution of these vegetation types is critical for the ecological protection and restoration of the Yellow River Delta. This study proposes a multi-source remote sensing data fusion method based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 imagery, integrating the temporal characteristics of optical and SAR (synthetic aperture radar) data for the classification mapping of salt marsh vegetation in the Yellow River Delta. Phenological and polarization features were extracted to capture vegetation characteristics. A random forest algorithm was then applied to evaluate the impact of different feature combinations on classification accuracy. Combining optical and SAR time-series data significantly enhanced classification accuracy, particularly in differentiating P. australis, S. salsa, and T. chinensis. The integration of phenological features, polarization ratio, and polarization difference achieved a classification accuracy of 93.51% with a Kappa coefficient of 0.917, outperforming the use of individual data sources. As a globally distributed perennial Gramineae, Phragmites australis can adapt to harsh ecological environments and has significant economic and environmental values. Here, we performed a complete assembly and annotation of the mitogenome of P. australis using genomic data from the PacBio and BGI platforms. The P. australis mitogenome is a multibranched structure of 501,134 bp, divided into two circular chromosomes of 325,493 bp and 175,641 bp, respectively. A sequence-simplified succinate dehydrogenase 4 gene was identified in this mitogenome, which is often translocated to the nuclear genome in the mitogenomes of gramineous species. We also identified tissue-specific mitochondrial differentially expressed genes using RNAseq data, providing new insights into understanding energy allocation and gene regulatory strategies in the long-term adaptive evolution of P. australis mitochondria. In addition, we studied the mitogenome features of P. australis in more detail, including repetitive sequences, gene Ka/Ks analyses, codon preferences, intracellular gene transfer, RNA editing, and multispecies phylogenetic analyses. Our results provide an essential molecular resource for understanding the genetic characterisation of the mitogenome of P. australis and provide a research basis for population genetics and species evolution in Arundiaceae. Climate warming and associated extreme temperature fluctuations result in rapid and pronounced changes in the biogeographical ranges of species. However, existing models that predict these climate‐driven range dynamics often fail to adequately account for the intricacies of local adaptation and individual specialization, treating species as having uniform responses without accounting for individual variability. This oversight highlights the need to enhance our understanding of the evolutionary implications of intraspecific and intrageneric variability, particularly with respect to photosynthetic acclimation of plants. To explore how widespread plant species adapt to temperature variability, we used the cosmopolitan genus Phragmites as a model. We assessed the variance–covariance matrix of gene‐based traits to quantify genetic variability and examine correlations among traits associated with intraspecific photosynthetic acclimatization in a thermal gradient that includes low‐, moderate‐, and high‐temperature regimes. Our findings revealed that gene‐based clinal variations, exemplified by increased robustness in plants from lower latitudes, were closely related to the latitudinal origins of genotypes and manifested more prominently in cooler environments. Furthermore, coordination of integrated physiological traits, aimed at preserving whole plant fitness, exhibits a heightened response under cold stress. We observed that plasticity in physiological traits did not increase with latitude in regions of high climatic seasonality, indicating a deviation from expected clinal plasticity patterns. This finding prompted a re‐evaluation of our understanding of phenotypic plasticity. Our findings improved our understanding of the intrageneric variation in physiological acclimation strategies among widespread species, refining predictions of species responses, survival, and distribution amidst global climate change. Ecological restoration of abandoned mining areas in arid regions presents significant challenges, especially in terms of soil salinization, vegetation loss, and limited water resources. In the Hami arid area of Xinjiang, vegetation restoration is crucial for stabilizing ecosystems and combating land degradation. This study investigated the effects of two irrigation methods—drip and border irrigation—on the growth and survival of four plant species: Tamarix chinensis, Calligonum mongolicum, Haloxylon ammodendron, and Phragmites australis, each exposed to salinity levels of 8 g/L, 12 g/L, and 16 g/L. Our results showed that drip irrigation significantly improved the growth and survival outcomes for most species, particularly T. chinensis and H. ammodendron, with average heights, crown sizes, and base diameters substantially higher under drip irrigation compared to border irrigation (p < 0.05). C. mongolicum, however, displayed optimal vertical growth under border irrigation, although drip irrigation promoted a denser, more compact crown structure. Salinity tolerance varied by species, with 8 g/L salinity being optimal for all, while higher salinity levels (12 g/L and 16 g/L) reduced growth across species, underscoring the importance of salinity management in restoration efforts. P. australis, assessed only under border irrigation due to its high water requirements, showed stable growth but reduced tolerance at higher salinities. These findings highlight that drip irrigation, particularly when combined with moderate salinity (8 g/L), is a more effective strategy for enhancing vegetation growth and survival in arid, saline environments. Salt marshes, as one of the most productive ecosystems on earth, have experienced fragmentation, degradation, and losses due to the impacts of climate change and human overexploitation. Accurate monitoring of vegetation distribution and composition is crucial for salt marsh protection. However, achieving accurate mapping has posed a challenge. Leveraging the high spatiotemporal resolution of the Sentinel series data, this study developed a method for high-accuracy mapping based on monthly changes across the vegetation life cycle, utilizing the random forest algorithm. This method was applied to identify Phragmites australis, Suaeda salsa, Spartina alterniflora, and the mixed-vegetation zones of Tamarix chinensis in the Yellow River Delta, and to analyze the key features of the model. The results indicate that: (1) integrating Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite data achieved superior mapping accuracy (OA = 90.7%) compared to using either satellite individually; (2) the inclusion of SAR data significantly enhanced the classification accuracy within the mixed-vegetation zone, with "SARdivi" in July emerging as the pivotal distinguishing feature; and (3) the overall extent of salt marsh vegetation in the Yellow River Delta remained relatively stable from 2018 to 2022, with the largest area recorded in 2020 (265.69 km2). These results demonstrate the robustness of integrating Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 features for mapping salt marsh, particularly in complex mixed-vegetation zones. Water level variations (WLVs) substantially affect the spatial distribution of riparian vegetation. Accurately quantifying the water level fluctuation requirements (WLFRs) of aquatic macrophytes is essential for effective ecological water level management. Nevertheless, studies on the WLFRs of herbaceous plants in large river floodplains, such as Phragmites australis (common reed) and Phalaris arundinacea (reed canarygrass), are limited. Herein, we investigated the WLFRs of the two plants across water bodies with different WLVs in the Yangtze River Basin. We focused on the effects of sub-monthly and sub-daily WLVs on their average monthly water depth requirements (WDRs) during critical growth periods. Our findings indicated: (1) For Phragmites, during the emergence period, the upper limits of WDRs decreased with increased amplitudes of sub-monthly WLVs and with greater frequency and amplitude of sub-daily WLVs, in which sub-daily variations had a more pronounced effect. Conversely, during the rapid growth period, the upper limits increased with larger sub-monthly WLVs amplitudes, but decreased with higher frequency and amplitude of sub-daily WLVs. (2) For Phalaris, during both the emergence and rapid growth periods, intensified sub-daily WLVs led to decreased upper limits of WDRs. In summary, although distinct disparities existed in the WLFRs of Phragmites and Phalaris across various water bodies, the trends in WDRs during the emergence and rapid growth periods were consistent for both species. Societal Impact Statement: The invasive species S. alterniflora and P. australis are fast growing coastal wetland plants sequestering large amounts of carbon in the soil and protect coastlines against erosion and storm surges. In this global analysis, we found that Spartina and Phragmites increase methane but not nitrous oxide emissions, with Phragmites having a lesser effect. The impact of the invasive species on emissions differed greatly among different types of native plant groups, providing valuable information to managers and policymakers during coastal wetland planning and restoration efforts. Further, our estimated net emissions per wetland plant group facilitate regional and national blue carbon estimates. Summary: Globally, Spartina alterniflora and Phragmites australis are among the most pervasive invasive plants in coastal wetland ecosystems. Both species sequester large amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and biogenic carbon in soils but also support production and emission of methane (CH4). In this study, we investigated the magnitude of their net greenhouse gas (GHG) release from invaded and non‐invaded habitats.We conducted a meta‐analysis of GHG fluxes associated with these two species and related soil carbon content and plant biomass in invaded coastal wetlands.Our results show that both invasive species increase CH4 fluxes compared to uninvaded coastal wetlands, but they do not significantly affect CO2 and N2O fluxes. The magnitude of emissions from Spartina and Phragmites differs among native habitats. GHG fluxes, soil carbon and plant biomass of Spartina‐invaded habitats were highest compared to uninvaded mudflats and succulent forb‐dominated wetlands, while being lower compared to uninvaded mangroves (except for CH4).This meta‐analysis highlights the important role of individual plant traits as drivers of change by invasive species on plant‐mediated carbon cycles. The contamination of rivers by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is a problem of global importance. The Valles River is Ciudad Valles' (Central Mexico) main source of drinking water. During the four seasons of the year, water samples (n = 6), sediment samples (n = 6), and Phragmites australis plants (n = 10) were taken from three study sites selected based on the presence of anthropogenic activities in the Valles River. A graphite atomic absorption spectrophotometer estimated elements in the water, and an energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer quantified elements in sediments and plant samples. Phragmites australis accumulated metal(loid)s mainly in the roots during all seasons of the year. Water samples from all sites recorded PTEs (As, Pb, Cd, and Hg), with primary sources identified as the sugar industry, urban and industrial wastewater, and the combustion of fossil fuels. Sediment samples showed concentrations of Hg, Mn, Ni, Zn, Pb, V, Cu, Cr, and Cd, attributed to agricultural practices, industrial activity, and urbanization. P. australis is an alternative for in situ phytoremediation because this macrophyte can bioaccumulate different elements in its roots, such as Mn, Rb, V, Sr, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, and As. In the last decade, microplastics (MPs) have become a significant environmental pollutant with potential negative effects on aquatic biodiversity and ecosystems. This mesocosm study examined the effect of MPs on the growth and physiology of two common aquatic macrophytes (Myriophyllum spicatum and Phragmites australis), focusing on changes in biomass allocation and nutrient contents. We evaluated oxidative stress responses by measuring superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, soluble sugars, free amino acids, and glutamate synthetase activities for M. spicatum, and we assessed photosynthetic processes through metrics including Fv/Fm, electron transfer rate, and Y(II) for P. australis. Unlike most previous studies in plants, we found that the growth and all functional traits of these two plants were not significantly affected by the common MP type (polyethylene) at either low or high concentrations. Additionally, we have examined the impact of another type of MP (polystyrene) on P. australis, and no significant effect was observed. In conjunction with prior case studies, the majority of which demonstrated the toxic impacts of MPs, our research indicates that plants exhibit a species-specific response to MPs. In addition to the strong adaptation of widespread plants used in this study, the large experimental system and relative long-term treatment may also explain our negative results. Introduced Phragmites (Phragmites australis australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steud.) is one of the most invasive plants in North America. To supplement existing management tools, a classical biological control program began in Canada in 2019 using two host-specific stem-boring moths, Archanara neurica (Hübner) and Lenisa geminipuncta (Haworth) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). In this article, we summarize the first three years of monitoring data for L. geminipuncta and A. neurica as biological control agents for introduced Phragmites. First, we assess agent presence and activity in the initial years post-release based on feeding damage from long-term monitoring data across 30 release sites initiated between 2019 and 2023. Second, we investigate the within-site distribution of agent feeding damage to improve future monitoring and agent collection from nurse sites. Third, we report the results of an experiment to determine optimal release densities of A. neurica larvae. We found agent feeding damage at 92% of initial release sites in the first year and agent activity persisted at all of these sites into years two and three post-release. Patterns of agent feeding damage suggest that the agents disperse quickly through the patch following release, favouring the interior area over the edges of introduced Phragmites stands. Finally, releasing intermediate densities of 40 A. neurica larvae per release point was more efficient than releasing either units of 20 or 80 larvae. The results of the first three years of monitoring are highly encouraging for the introduced Phragmites biological control program. Insights from these early monitoring results will be used to refine optimal release strategies, improve our ability to locate egg-bearing stems at nurse sites to facilitate the collection and redistribution of agents to new release locations, and inform protocols for longer-term monitoring of impacts on the target weed once agents are established. Coastal wetlands play an important carbon sequestration role in China's "carbon peaking" and "carbon neutrality" goals. Monitoring aboveground biomass (AGB) is crucial for wetland management. Satellite remote sensing enables efficient retrieval of AGB. However, a variety of statistical models can be used for biomass inversion, depending on factors such as the vegetation type and inversion method. In this study, Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) images were preprocessed in the study area through radiation calibration and atmospheric correction for modeling. In terms of model selection, 13 different models, including the univariate regression model, multiple regression model, and machine learning regression model, were compared in terms of their accuracy in estimating the biomass of various wetland vegetation types under their respective optimal parameters. The findings revealed that: (1) the regression models varied across vegetation types, with the accuracy of the biomass estimates decreasing in the order of Scirpus spp. > Spartina alterniflora > Phragmites australis; (2) overall modeling, without distinguishing vegetation types, addressed the challenges of limited samples availability and sampling difficulty. Among them, the random forest regression model outperformed the others in estimating wet and dry AGB with R2 values of 0.806 and 0.839, respectively. (3) Comparatively, individual modeling of vegetation types can better reflect the biomass of each wetland vegetation type, especially the dry AGB of Scirpus spp., whose R2 and RMSE values increased by 0.248 and 11.470 g/m2, respectively. This study evaluates the impact of coastal saltmarsh vegetation types on biomass estimation, providing insights into biomass dynamics and valuable support for wetland conservation and restoration, with potential contributions to global habitat assessment models and international policies like the 30x30 Conservation Agenda. Unoccupied aerial systems (UASs) are increasingly being deployed in coastal environments to rapidly map and monitor changes to geomorphology, vegetation, and infrastructure, particularly in difficult to access areas. UAS data, relative to airplane or satellite data, typically have higher spatial resolution, sensor customization, and increased flexibility in temporal resolution, which benefits monitoring applications. UAS data have been used to map and monitor invasive species occurrence and expansion, such as Phragmites australis, a reed species in wetlands throughout the eastern United States. To date, the work on this species has been largely opportunistic or ad hoc. Here, we statistically and qualitatively compare results from several sensors and classification workflows to develop baseline understanding of the accuracy of different approaches used to map Phragmites. Two types of UAS imagery were collected in a Phragmites-invaded salt marsh setting—natural color red-green-blue (RGB) imagery and multispectral imagery spanning visible and near infrared wavelengths. We evaluated whether one imagery type provided significantly better classification results for mapping land cover than the other, also considering trade-offs like overall accuracy, financial costs, and effort. We tested the transferability of classification workflows that provided the highest thematic accuracy to another barrier island environment with known Phragmites stands. We showed that both UAS sensor types were effective in classifying Phragmites cover, with neither resulting in significantly better classification results than the other for Phragmites detection (overall accuracy up to 0.95, Phragmites recall up to 0.86 at the pilot study site). We also found the highest accuracy workflows were transferrable to sites in a barrier island setting, although the quality of results varied across these sites (overall accuracy up to 0.97, Phragmites recall up to 0.90 at the additional study sites). Three different types of common halophytes (Haloxylon ammodendron, Tamarix chinensis, and Phragmites australis) in northwest China were used in this study. A field experiment approach was adopted, involving five solutions with different salt concentrations (0, 150, 200, 250, and 300 mmol·L−1) for salt stress treatment. The changes in photosynthetic characteristics and physiological characteristics of three different types of halophytes and their relationship with biomass were measured and analyzed. The results showed that (1) with the increase in salt concentration, the plant height, stem diameter, and biomass of three halophytes showed a downward trend. (2) The chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll contents of Haloxylon ammodendron and Tamarix chinensis first increased and then decreased with the increase in salt concentration. Phragmites australis showed a decreasing trend. The malondialdehyde content of three halophytes showed a clear increasing trend. (3) Under different salt concentrations, the diurnal changes in the net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency of three different types of halophytes all showed an "M" trend. The diurnal variation in intercellular carbon dioxide concentration showed a "W" trend. (4) With the increase in salt concentration, the daily average values of the net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance of three different types of halophytes showed a downward trend. The daily average value of intercellular carbon dioxide concentration showed a "V"-shaped trend of first decreasing and then increasing. The daily average value of water use efficiency showed a "single peak" trend of first increasing and then decreasing. Haloxylon ammodendron and Phragmites australis were mainly limited by stomata at a salt concentration of 0~200 mmol·L−1 and were mainly limited by non-stomata at a salt concentration of 250~300 mmol·L−1. Tamarix chinensis is mainly limited by stomata at a salt concentration of 0~250 mmol·L−1 and is mainly limited by non-stomata at a salt concentration of 300 mmol·L−1. Compared with Haloxylon ammodendron and Phragmites australis, Tamarix chinensis has better water use efficiency, salt tolerance, and adaptability. (5) Meteorological factors, growth morphological factors, physiological factors, photosynthetic factors, and salt concentration have higher explanatory degrees, which have significant effects on the biomass of halophytes. Among them, salt concentration and growth morphological factors have direct core driving effects on the biomass of three different types of halophytes, while meteorological factors, photosynthetic factors, and physiological factors have different effects due to the differences in and complexity of halophytes. The polewards range expansion of tropical herbivorous fish into temperate latitudes is leading to overgrazing of marine habitats and community phase shifts in some regions. Here, we test the potential effects of increased herbivory on the temperate habitat‐forming seagrass Posidonia australis. We used a series of simulated herbivory experiments to predict the potential impacts of climate‐mediated increases in seagrass consumption along P. australis entire latitudinal range (~9° latitude) in eastern Australia (1700 km of coastline). We subjected treatment plots to two levels of simulated herbivory (10% or 80% of leaves clipped) and compared them to unclipped controls. We measured seagrass leaf growth rates and tissue chemical traits: carbohydrates in rhizomes, leaf phenolics, and nutrients (carbon, nitrogen, and C:N ratio) in leaves and rhizomes. At the warmest range‐edge population, we also tested how responses to increased herbivory may vary between summer and winter, or with repeated clipping events. Clipped shoots maintained growth rates similar to unclipped controls despite losing up to 80% of leaf biomass. This was consistent along the full latitudinal range and after repeated simulated herbivory at the northernmost location. One‐off clipping events impacted plant architecture, increasing the number of subdividing shoots. At the species range edge, leaves grew more in winter than in summer, and clipping tended to lower seagrass growth only in winter; however, higher levels of shoot subdivision were produced over summer than in winter. Plant chemical traits could not explain consistently the growth patterns observed despite some traits varying with latitude (e.g., leaf nitrogen content decreased with latitude and C:N ratio increased) and/or simulated herbivory. Synthesis: P. australis growth is not affected by increases in simulated herbivory and may be relatively resilient to future increases in seagrass consumption, suggesting that this species could be a relative 'winner' under future climate change conditions that lead to enhanced herbivory. Coastal biological invasions pose a wide-reaching threat to various ecosystems, affecting both vegetation and herbivores in native communities. Although herbivores often exert strong top-down control on vegetation, the impact of invasive species on consumers that strongly regulate native species in invaded ecosystems remains unclear. Therefore, through field surveys and feeding preference experiments, this study examined the effects of the invasive Spartina alterniflora Loisel. (hereafter, Spartina) on the native moth Laelia coenosa Hübner (hereafter, Laelia), a notorious pest that has been documented to cause significant damage to native Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. (hereafter, Phragmites) marshes in coastal wetlands of China. Field surveys showed that Laelia larvae were more abundant and had higher grazing rates in Phragmites than in Spartina marshes in summer, but these patterns reversed in autumn. Feeding experiments consistently showed that the dietary preference of Laelia larvae switched from Phragmites in summer to Spartina in autumn, likely because Spartina has a longer growing season and relatively higher nutritional quality than Phragmites in autumn. Thus, by providing shelters (i.e., dietary sources and habitats) during unfavorable seasons, Spartina invasions may facilitate this insect pest Laelia and potentially amplify its damage to native wetland vegetation. Invasions of non-native species are considered major threats to biodiversity in urban waterbodies. We compared macroinvertebrate richness, density, and community composition among three urban lakes with varying macrophyte covers: One dominated by the invasive macrophyte species Elodea nuttallii, one by the native species Myriophyllum spicatum, and the third one by the native Phragmites australis. We also monitored substrate parameters and water quality. Canonical correspondence analysis combined with hierarchical and variation partitioning confirmed that macrophytes were the most different feature among the lakes and that dominant macrophytes of each lake best explained differences in invertebrate communities, followed by water quality and substrate type. Macrophyte growth form could be linked to certain invertebrate taxa: emergent macrophytes supported abundant shredders (Gammarus sp. and Asellus aquaticus); and submerged macrophytes favored certain predators (Hemiptera, e.g., Plea leachi). Our data also show that the invasive species E. nuttallii supports similar richness and density of invertebrates as the native macrophyte M. spicatum. Overall, our findings indicate a positive effect of E. nuttallii on the richness and density of invertebrates in the studied urban lakes. Species composition and biomass are key indicators of vegetation performance. While Phragmites australis is extensively studied worldwide, data on its communities and biomass in natural habitats are limited in the European part of the Russian Federation. This study examines P. australis-dominated communities and their biomass in wetlands along the Middle Volga River. P. australis was either the dominant or co-dominant species in seven community types. Their seasonal maximum aboveground biomass correlated with plant projective cover, being highest in Schoenoplecteto lacustris-Phragmitetum australis (mean 1.7 kg m−2), with nearly 100% cover, and lowest (0.5 kg m−2) in Spirodelo-Phragmitetum australis, with 50% cover. Compared with communities dominated by Glyceria maxima, Schoenoplectus lacustris, and Typha latifolia, those of P. australis had the highest seasonal maximum aboveground biomass in running waters (mean 1.32 kg m−2) but the lowest in standing waters of the Kuibyshev Reservoir (mean 0.70 kg m−2), likely reflecting nutrient availability. A similar pattern was observed for the dominant species alone. The mean belowground biomass of P. australis was 1.9 kg m−2, with a belowground/aboveground ratio of 1.5. Similar values were found for S. lacustris and T. latifolia. The community types and biomass values align with those found in other European regions with warm temperate climates. The study presented here reports the concentration of major, trace, and rare earth elements in soil, sediments, and vegetation samples collected from 13 locations around Anapa City located on the northern coast of the Black Sea in Russia. The neutron activation analysis technique has been used to fulfill this objective. Along with this, the bioconcentration and translocation factors were calculated. Overall, the content of 31 elements was detected in soil and sediments while 20 elements were determined in three types of vegetation: macroalgae (Cystoseira sp. and Ulva sp.), aquatic plants (Phragmites australis), and sea grass (Zostera sp.). The quantified concentration followed the order soil > sediment > vegetation. The phytotoxic levels for Zn, V, Mn, and Fe have been quantified as the highest. Bromine was the most abundant and accumulated in Phragmites australis. Based on the results obtained from this investigation, there is a possibility of contamination in the study area. Eutrophication resulting from anthropogenic activities has been recognized as a significant driver of changes in ecosystem functioning. Furthermore, it may exacerbate the top-down effect and thus exert an important impact on plant growth. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a 3-year manipulative field experiment to investigate the impacts of nitrogen addition and crab herbivory on the growth of Phragmites australis in the salt marsh of the Yellow River Delta. The results demonstrated that a 3-year nitrogen addition can significantly increase the total nitrogen and carbon content of P. australis leaves, thereby enhancing their nutritional value and palatability, as well as increasing the proportion of leaves consumed by crabs. Therefore, nitrogen addition together with crab herbivory had a significant negative effect on P. australis height, leaf length, and leaf breadth in the ambient crab and procedural crab cage treatment compared to the crab exclusion treatment. The structural equation modeling further substantiated these findings. Themodel revealed a direct and positive correlation between nitrogen addition and leaf nutrient content (path coefficient = 0.34). Additionally, it demonstrated a direct and positive relationship between leaf nutrient content and the proportion of leaves consumed by crabs (path coefficient = 0.22). Simultaneously, there was an observed negative correlation (path coefficient = - 0.37) between the proportion of leaves consumed by crabs and plant functional traits, represented by leaf length in the model, during 2018. Moreover, the crab exclusion treatment significantly reduced the proportion of leaves consumed by crabs and thus enhanced the P. australis individuals, leaf number, and biomass. Overall, crab herbivory had a significant detrimental top-down effect on the growth of P. australis, and nitrogen enrichmentmay exacerbate this top-down effect. The findings of our study highlight the combined adverse effects of nutrient enrichment and top-down on plant functional traits and plant growth. The findings of this study will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the underlying factors influencing vegetation degradation in coastal wetland, thereby establishing a solid theoretical framework for the conservation and management of wetland ecosystems within the context of global environmental change. Aim: Estuarine vegetation routinely experiences natural tidal fluctuations and is highly vulnerable to extreme events such as heavy rainfall, leading to changes in plant population structure and adaptability. Genetic and epigenetic modifications are widely considered to be mechanisms of phenotypic variation, triggered in plants responding to extreme changing environments. However, understanding on correlations among genetic, epigenetic, and phenotypic variation of wild plant populations is still limited. Location: China. Methods: In this study, populations of the typical wetland clonal species Phragmites australis were selected from four estuaries along various latitudes in China. Genetic and epigenetic diversity and phenotypic variation of these populations were analysed. Results: Phenotypic variation of P. australis populations was the highest at Yellow River Estuary and the lowest at Min River Estuary. Across all estuaries, Genetic and epigenetic diversity was strongly linear‐correlated. Genetic diversity had significant correlations with variation in reproductive traits, whereas epigenetic diversity had significant correlations with variation in growth traits. Climatic factors of mean annual temperature and precipitation, as well as soil nitrogen and phosphorus, were negatively correlated with variation in genetic diversity, epigenetic diversity, and variation in reproductive traits of P. australis populations along latitudes. Variation in growth traits was negatively correlated with soil salinity, reflecting the limiting effect of salinity on plant growth. Main Conclusion: Our findings found that genetic and epigenetic variations may play different roles in phenotypic variation of P. australis populations along latitudes, the variation becomes greater when the climatic and edaphic conditions deteriorate. The findings shed new light on the adaptation and evolution of wetland plant populations along a large latitudinal scale, and may contribute to the revegetation of estuary wetlands. Poyang Lake wetland plays an important ecological service function. Frequent drought events have caused significant changes in the distribution pattern of wetland plants. This study analyzed the changes in the distribution elevation of wetland plants in Poyang Lake from 2000 to 2020, including the optimal elevation, and upper and lower limit elevations, and revealed the impacts of drought on the ecological niches of typical wetland plants. The results showed that the wetland plants were distributed in a regular strip pattern according to the elevation gradient. The Polygonum hydropiper-Phalaris arundinacea (PP), Carex cinerascens (Cc), Phragmites australis-Triarrhena lutarioriparia (PT), and Artemisia selengensis (As) communities were mainly distributed at elevations of 8.70-13.62 m, 10.35-14.99 m, 12.00-16.28 m, and 11.82-18.46 m, with optimal elevations of 11.16, 12.67, 14.14, and 15.14 m, respectively. Although the optimal elevations and upper limit elevations of four typical wetland plants exhibited different changing trends, their lower limit elevations showed the significant downward trends, especially for Cc and PP communities. Moreover, drought caused a varying degree of decrease (0.16-0.34 m) in the optimal elevations of four typical wetland plants, the upper and lower limit elevations of most wetland plants had also decreased in dry years. Biological invasions pose a significant threat to ecosystems, disrupting local biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The genomic underpinnings of invasiveness, however, are still largely unknown, making it difficult to predict and manage invasive species effectively. The common reed (Phragmites australis) is a dominant grass species in wetland ecosystems and has become particularly invasive when transferred from Europe to North America. Here, we present a high-quality gap-free, telomere-to-telomere genome assembly of Phragmites australis consisting of 24 pseudochromosomes and a B chromosome. Fully phased subgenomes demonstrated considerable subgenome dominance and revealed the divergence of diploid progenitors approximately 30.9 million years ago. Comparative genomics using chromosome-level scaffolds for three other lineages and a previously published draft genome assembly of an invasive lineage revealed that gene family expansions in the form of tandem duplications may have contributed to the invasiveness of the lineage. This study sheds light on the genome evolution of Arundinoideae grasses and suggests that genetic drivers, such as gene family expansions and tandem duplications, may underly the processes of biological invasion in plants. These findings provide a crucial step toward understanding and managing the genetic basis of invasiveness in plant species. We provide a complete, telomere to telomere gap-free genome assembly for common reed that includes its B chromosome. Industrial effluents pose a serious environmental problem, because they contain toxic contaminants mainly heavy metals that are the most dangerous to humans, animals, plants, and the environment in general. Phytoremediation using macrophytes is an adopted technique for the environment decontamination due to its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The present study aims to highlight the capabilities of macrophytes to remove heavy metals from wastewater of Biskra region (Algeria). The methodology consists of filling out the filters planted with Arundo donax and Phragmites australis with raw industrial wastewater, then recovering decontaminated water after 15 days to assess removal of lead, copper, zinc, and iron. Both plants had shown a good efficiency for the removal of metals loaded in wastewater eliminating about 94 to 98% of initial concentration. In addition, calculated bioaccumulation factor (BAF) had confirmed the accumulation of heavy metals in different parts of experimental plants; recorded values of BAF > 1 allowed the consideration of Arundo donax and Phragmites australis as good hyper-accumulator plants. Obtained results confirm the efficiency of phytoremediation technology using macrophytes for the wastewater treatment in particular and the environment decontamination in general. The spatial pattern of leaf stoichiometry is critical in predicting plant palatability and ecosystem productivity and nutrient cycling rates and thus is a major focus of community ecological research. Coastal wetlands as vital blue carbon ecosystems, with high possibility to be vulnerable to plant invasion, studies focused on stoichiometry and its pattern are important to unveil the elements cycling process. However, previous studies have mainly focused on stoichiometry in terrestrial ecosystems, there are few studies conducted on coastal wetland ecosystems, especially the studies that compare leaf stoichiometry between native and non-native plants in coastal wetlands. In this study, we compared the latitudinal patterns of leaf nutrient contents and their stoichiometric ratios between native and non-native plant species across coastal wetland ecosystems and investigated whether leaf stoichiometric patterns were driven by climatic factors. We used a compiled global data set of 954 records to conduct a systematic meta-analysis. The results showed that there were significant differences in latitudinal patterns of leaf carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents and C:N ratio between native and non-native species, as well as significant differences in leaf C, N, and phosphorus (P) contents. For native species, we found significant latitudinal patterns in leaf C, N, and P contents and C:N and C:P ratios, whereas for non-native species, we found significant latitudinal patterns in leaf N content and C:P and N:P ratios. Mean annual temperature of the data collection site was a significant predictor of leaf stoichiometry of native plants but only of leaf N content and C:P ratio of nonnative plants. Thus, we demonstrated spatial heterogeneity in leaf stoichiometries between native and non-native plants in coastal wetlands, indicating that such differences should be emphasized in future biogeochemical models and plant-herbivore interaction studies owing to the important role of wetland plants in global C, N, and P cycles. Our findings increase understanding of plant-related nutrient and elements cycling in coastal wetlands, as well as improve predictions of plant growth rates and vegetation productivity across large scales under plant invasion scenarios. The impacts of climate change are reaching unprecedented levels, heightening the risk of species loss and ecosystem service degradation. Wetlands, highly threatened ecosystems, serve vital ecological functions by capturing carbon, filtering water, and harbouring diverse wildlife. Coastal wetlands encounter many challenges, such as increased drought periods and escalating salinity levels, severely impacting plant biodiversity. Assessing how plants respond to various environmental stress factors is imperative for devising successful conservation strategies. In the present study, we examined three representative grass species found in various habitats within the Albufera Natural Park, close to the city of Valencia on the Spanish Mediterranean coast: Imperata cylindrica, Phragmites australis, and Saccharum ravennae. High salinity and water stress conditions were induced by subjecting the plants to irrigation with solutions containing 200, 400, 600, and 800 mM NaCl or withholding irrigation altogether to mimic coastal flooding and drought scenarios. The treatments were maintained until noticeable wilting of the plants occurred, at which point a range of stress biomarkers were determined, including photosynthetic pigments, ions, osmolytes, oxidative stress markers, and antioxidant metabolites, as well as antioxidant enzyme activities. Saccharum ravennae displayed the highest sensitivity to salt stress, whereas I. cylindrica appeared to be the most tolerant. The primary salinity tolerance mechanism observed in I. cylindrica and P. australis was a blockage of ion transport from the root zone to the aerial part, together with the salt-induced accumulation of proline and soluble sugars to high concentrations in the former. No significant effects of the water deficit treatment on the growth or biochemical parameters were observed for any of the analysed species. Wetlands provide numerous ecological services and are key habitats for aquatic flora and fauna. In the Beledanga wetland, the current study was conducted for 3 years, from July 2019 to June 2021, to evaluate the seasonal influence of physicochemical parameters on phytoplankton diversity and abundance patterns. Overall 48 genera of phytoplankton were observed. Bacillariophyceae (27%) contributed the maximum to the total phytoplankton density. The total abundance of phytoplankton was found utmost during monsoon (4.081 × 103 unit l−1) and least during post-monsoon (3.316 × 103 unit l−1). One-way analysis of variance indicated significant seasonal differences (p < 0.05) for some genera. The study gave the idea about the most influencing physic-chemical parameters (dissolved oxygen, turbidity, total hardness, Ca2+, and total nitrogen) on the growth of phytoplankton with the help of different multivariate and univariate analysis (canonical correspondence analysis and Karl Pearson's correlation). The study again highlighted that climate parameters (temperature and rainfall) had some effect on the phytoplanktonic groups. Our study conceded that N:P in the studied wetland was less than the Redfield ratio (16:1) in all three seasons, while the Si:P ratio was noticed in the high range (15:1) during pre-monsoon. The value of the Shannon diversity index and Margalef's species richness index were noticed to be > 3, which signified quite rich in phytoplankton diversity. But the value of Algal Pollution Index, which describes the ecological pollution level based on the present algal genera was observed high throughout all seasons, indicating organic load. So in future the studied wetland may get adversely affected with influence of anthropogenic activities. Therefore, for sustainable biodiversity of the waterbody, the anthropogenic activities (retting and intensification of agricultural farming) and macrophytes need to be controlled and regulated. Bedload sediment transport plays an important role in the evolution of rivers, marshes and deltas. In these aquatic environments, vegetation is widespread, and plant species have unique morphology. However, the impact of real plant morphology on flow and sediment transport has not been quantified. This study used model plants with real plant morphology, based on the aquatic species Phragmites australis, Acorus calamus and Typha latifolia. The frontal area of these species increases away from the bed, which leads to higher near‐bed velocity than would be predicted from depth‐average frontal area. A plant morphology coefficient was defined to quantify the impact of vertically‐varied plant frontal area. Laboratory experiments confirmed that the plant morphology coefficient improved the prediction of near‐bed velocity, near‐bed turbulent kinetic energy and bedload transport rate in canopies with realistic morphology. Plant morphology can alter transport rates by up to an order of magnitude, relative to the assumption of uniform morphology. Plain Language Summary: Aquatic vegetation is a crucial component of river, marsh and delta ecosystems. It has a significant impact on landscape evolution by altering sediment transport. Each vegetation species has a unique shape, but the impact of plant shape on sediment transport has not been previously investigated. This study explained how plant shape impacts sediment transport. Results show that differences in plant shape can change velocity and turbulence close to the channel bed, and thus alter sediment transport rate by an order of magnitude. Plants with greater vertical variation in shape, and specifically less plant volume near the channel bed, produced greater sediment transport. A parameter was defined to quantify the impact of plant shape on flow and sediment transport. By incorporating this parameter, our new model improves the prediction of sediment transport in vegetated regions. This study provides a method for describing the impact of plant shape on flow and sediment transport, which is important to the management and restoration of rivers, marshes and deltas. In recent years, the continuous expansion of Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) has caused serious damage to coastal wetland ecosystem. Mapping the coverage of S. alterniflora by remote sensing and analyzing its growth pattern pose great importance in controlling the expansion and maintaining the biodiversity of coastal wetlands in Guangxi. This study aimed to use harmonic regression to fit time series data of vegetation indices based on Landsat images, and the phenological features were extracted as the input of random forest model to distinguish S. alterniflora in coastal zone of Guangxi from 2009 to 2020. The influence of natural environmental factors on the distribution of S. alterniflora was evaluated by Maxent model, and the potential distribution was analyzed. The results showed that: (1) Based on the time series data of characteristic indices fitted by harmonic regression, the extraction of phenological features of S. alterniflora identification effect exhibited high accuracy (in the result of 2009, Overall Accuracy [OA] = 97.33%, Kappa = 0.95). (2) During 2009–2020, the S. alterniflora in coastal zone of Guangxi kept proliferating and expanding from east to west. The total area of S. alterniflora continued to increase while the growth rate showed a trend that increased first and then decreased. (3) The Maxent model shows good accuracy in simulating the habitat of S. alterniflora, with a potential distribution area of 14,303.39 hm2. The findings will be beneficial to the understanding of dynamic changes of S. alterniflora in coastal zone of Guangxi and provide a scientific reference for other coastal wetland studies on S. alterniflora expansion. Many marsh birds, like bitterns or rails, are endangered species inhabiting only natural habitats and dependent exclusively on different types of emergent vegetation. In a changing environment, some of these habitat specialists are becoming more flexible, shifting their preferences by colonizing man-made habitats. We studied habitat selection by Little Bitterns (Ixobrychus minutus minutus) breeding in a fishpond landscape in south-eastern Poland. Applying a large-scale research approach, we examined several habitat features in order to predict the presence of the Little Bittern from a direct comparison of areas with and without breeding birds. Partial least squares (PLS) regression identified two components of several variables that explained 53% of the variation in the presence of the Little Bittern in a fishpond habitat. The occurrence of the Little Bittern was limited to high-quality patches of emergent vegetation, the height, width and area of which were all significantly greater in the area with breeding birds than in unoccupied patches. Patches with a highly variable edge line in the form of fringes or indentations were less favoured. An optimal water level throughout the breeding season was crucial for nest-site selection and ensured access to food. The heterogeneity of the pond dykes and pond canals positively predicted the presence of the Little Bittern by creating potential nesting or foraging sites. Interestingly, the proportion of bulrushes (Typha spp.) in the emergent vegetation patches had a negative effect on the presence of the Little Bittern. The main threat to this habitat‐sensitive species was the cutting of perennial emergent vegetation, in particular the Common Reed (Phragmites australis). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) significantly contribute to atmospheric chemistry at both regional and global scales. The composition and intensity of BVOC emissions vary significantly among different plant species. Previous studies have focused on BVOC emissions from tree species, but the results of research on BVOC emissions from wetland plants are still limited. Therefore, in this study, BVOCs emitted by three aquatic plants (Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia, and Iris pseudacorus) were sampled and analyzed using a dynamic headspace technique combined with GC-MS at daily scales. The diurnal observation data showed that the total BVOC emission rates of the three plants peaked with the increase in environmental factors (temperature, PAR, and water temperature). P. australis was the only of the three plants that emitted isoprene with a high rate of 48.34 μg·g−1Dw·h−1. Moreover, the peak emission rates of total BVOC (78.45 μg·g−1Dw·h−1) in P. australis were higher than most tree species. The emissions rates of volatile organic compounds, including monoterpenes, oxygenated volatile organic compounds, alkanes, and other volatile organic compounds, were statistically correlated across all species. The emission rates of isoprene from P. australis had significant associations with intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) (0.58, p < 0.05) and transpiration rate (Tr) (−0.63, p < 0.01). The emission rates of monoterpenes from P. australis were found to have a significantly positive correlation with the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) (0.58, p < 0.05) while T. angustifolia (−0.59, p < 0.05) and I. pseudacorus (−0.47, p < 0.05) showed the opposite trend. Such findings hold significance for the refinement of localized emission inventories and the development of comprehensive emission process models in future research, as BVOC emissions from wetland plants were reported here for the first time. The genus Paragus Latreille, 1804 with over 100 species of hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) is widely distributed except for Antarctica. The larval biology of these hoverflies is well known since they develop in aphid colonies, which are often of economic importance. However, the immature stages of only 9 of the 27 known larvae of genus Paragus are described. Paragus (Paragus) hyalopteri Marcos-García & Rojo, 1994, is a Palaearctic species described from Spain. Its larva has only been found preying on the aphid Hyalopterus pruni (Geoffroy, 1762) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), on several species of fruit trees and on leaves of Arundo donax L., and Phragmites spp. Here for the first time the full life cycle of a Paragus hoverfly is described including egg, all three larval stages and the puparium. Eggs, larvae and pupae of P. hyalopteri were collected on leaves of Phragmites australis (Cav.) among aphid colonies of H. pruni, and their morphology analyzed and described in detail using stereomicroscope and Scanning Electron Microscope techniques. Species of the family Microdochiaceae (Xylariales, Sordariomycetes) have been reported from worldwide, and collected from different plant hosts. The proposed new genus and two new species, viz., Macroidriella gen. nov., M. bambusae sp. nov. and Microdochium australe sp. nov., are based on multi-locus phylogenies from a combined dataset of ITS rDNA, LSU, RPB2 and TUB2 with morphological characteristics. Microdochium sinense has been collected from diseased leaves of Phragmites australis and this is the first report of the fungus on this host plant. Simultaneously, we annotated 10,372 to 11,863 genes, identified 4,909 single-copy orthologous genes, and conducted phylogenomic analysis based on genomic data. A gene family analysis was performed and it will expand the understanding of the evolutionary history and biodiversity of the Microdochiaceae. Worldwide molecular research of economically important Phalaris arundinacea (Poaceae) is mainly focused on the invasions of this species from Europe to North America. Until the present study, the genetic diversity of the P. arundinacea had not been studied across the Baltic countries. The objective of this research is to evaluate the diversity of Lithuanian populations of P. arundinacea at simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci comparatively among populations of the Baltic countries, Luxembourg, and the Russian Far East (Eurasian), evaluating differentiation between Lithuanian populations and ornamental accessions, and relating these with environmental features. For six selected Lithuanian river basin populations, GBS low density SNPs were used to determine genetic diversity. Bayesian analysis showed that Eurasian populations of Phalaris arundinacea consist of two gene clusters. Statistically significant genetic differentiation among European and Eurasian populations was documented. Lithuanian genotypes growing naturally along rivers are genetically distinct from cultivated ornamentals. GBS-SNPs divided the six selected Nemunas river basins into three distinct groups with one, two, or three rivers in separate groupings for genetic diversity. Genetic diversity is primarily within, rather than among, Lithuanian, eastern European, and Eurasian populations of P. arundinacea across the continent. There is still a need to investigate the relationships between glycophytes and halophytes and the many biotic and abiotic factors in their natural environments. Therefore, we study the effects of the type of environment on the ecophysiological responses and condition of the glycophyte Elder Sambucus nigra L., the macrophyte Common Reed Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., the facultative halophyte Weeping Alkaligrass Puccinellia distans (Jacq.) Parl, and the obligate halophyte Common Glasswort Salicornia europaea L. in a saline-disturbed anthropogenic region of central Poland. We analyzed the effects of salinity, acidity, and soil organic matter on shoot length, lipoperoxidation, and proline in roots and green parts, and evaluated plant responses to environmental disturbance, which allowed for the comparison of adaptation strategies. The studies were carried out in (1) "sodium production" (near sodium factories), (2) "anthropogenic environments" (waste dumps, agroecosystems, calcium deposits, post-production tanks), (3) "wetland environments" (near river channels and riparian areas), and (4) "control" (natural, unpolluted environments). Green parts of plants are better suited to indicate environmental stress than roots. Their higher structural MDA membrane damage is related to the transport of toxic ions to the shoots by a rapid transpiration stream in the xylem. We found high salinity to be the main factor inducing growth and found it to be correlated with the high pH effect on proline increase in glycophytes (Elder, Reed) and Weeping Alkaligrass, in contrast to Common Glasswort. We suggest that proline accumulation allows osmotic adjustment in the green parts of reeds and alkaligrasses, but may have another function (in Elder). Common Glasswort accumulates large amounts of Na+, which is energetically more effective than proline accumulation for osmotic adjustment. Organic matter affects plant growth and proline levels, but soil salinity and pH alter nutrient availability. Plant distribution along the salinity gradient indicates that Elder is the most salt-sensitive species compared to Reed, Alkaligrass, and Glasswort. Background and purpose: This study was conducted with the aim of investigating parallel strand lumber (PSL) made from reed residue and laminated veneer lumber (LVL) obtained from poplar wood reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) using epoxy resin. Materials and methods: The independent variable was FRP reinforcement for either LVL or PSL and control sample either LVL or LSL without FRP. The mechanical properties of the manufactured boards including bending strength (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) in the width and edge of the test sample, shear strength, compression strength parallel to the grain, internal bonding and screw withdrawal strengths were investigated as dependent variables. The obtained results were analyzed using completely randomized design and SPSS software. Results: Results showed that for all studied mechanical properties, the use of FRP increased the strength the PSL and LVL panels. For LVL, the effect of strengthening the samples with FRP was significant at the level of 1% and also for the modulus of rupture of the width and edge samples showed an increase of 93% and 59%, respectively. The value of MOE for samples reinforced with FRP showed an increase of 89.6 and 132% for the width and length of the PSL samples, respectively. For LVL, the MOE value of the width and edge of the samples increased by 54 and 95.5% with reinforcement. Reinforced PSL samples have improved shear strength by 31%, while this value was only 2.5% for LVL. In case of internal bonding, reinforcement with FRP improved the internal bonding strength of the samples by 92%. Screw withdrawal strengths improved by 27% due to the strengthening of the test samples by FRP. Conclusion: According to the results, it can be stated that the use of glass fibers and epoxy resin has a significant positive effect on the mechanical strength of PSL made of reed and LVL and it is possible to use low quality raw materials such as reed and low quality poplar wood layers. Coastal wetland ecosystems are increasingly threatened by escalating salinity levels, subjecting plants to salinity stress coupled with interactions in the community. Abiotic factors can disrupt the balance between competition and facilitation among plant species. Investigating the effects of different neighboring species and trait plasticity could extend the stress gradient hypothesis and enhance understanding of vegetation distribution and diversity in salt marshes. We conducted a greenhouse experiment and investigated the plastic response of wetland grass Phragmites australis to seven neighboring plants of three functional types (conspecifics, graminoids and forbs) under soil salinity (0 and 10 g/L). Plant height, base diameter, density, leaf thickness, specific leaf area and total and part biomasses were measured. Additionally, the relative interaction index (based on biomass) and the relative distance plasticity index (RDPI) were calculated. Salinity significantly reduced the biomass, height, density and diameter of P. australis. The functional types of neighboring plants also significantly affected these growth parameters. The influence of graminoids on P. australis was negative under 0 g/L, but this negative effect shifted to positive facilitation under 10 g/L. The facilitation effect of forbs was amplified under salinity, both supporting the stress gradient hypothesis. The growth traits of P. australis had a plastic response to salinity and competition, such as increasing belowground biomass to obtain more water and resources. The RDPI was higher under salt conditions than in competitive conditions. The plant–plant interaction response to stress varies with plant functional types and trait plasticity. An accurate quantification of global methane sources and sinks is imperative for assessing realistic pathways to mitigate climate change. A key challenge of quantifying the Global Methane Budget (Saunois et al., 2020, https://doi.org/10.5194/essd‐12‐1561‐2020) is the lack of consistency in uncertainties between sectors. Here we provide a new perspective on bottom‐up (BU) and top‐down (TD) methane uncertainties by using an expert opinion analysis based on a questionnaire conducted in 2021. Expectedly, experts rank highest uncertainty and lowest confidence levels in the Global Methane Budget related to natural sources in BU budgets. Here, we further reveal specific uncertainty types and introduce a ranking system for uncertainties in each sector. We find that natural source uncertainty is related particularly to driver data uncertainty in freshwater, vegetation, and coastal/ocean sources, as well as parameter uncertainty in wetland models. Reducing uncertainties, most notably in aquatic and wetland sources will help balance future BU and TD global methane budgets. We suggest a new methane source partitioning over gradients of human disturbance and demonstrate that 76.3% (75.8%–79.4%) or 561 (443–700) Tg CH4 yr−1 of global emissions can be attributed to moderately impacted, man‐made, artificial, or fully anthropogenic sources and 23.7% (20.6%–24.2%) or 174 (115–223) Tg CH4 yr−1 to natural and low impacted methane sources. Finally, we identify current research gaps and provide a plan of action to reduce current uncertainties in the Global Methane Budget. Plain Language Summary: To effectively address climate change, it's crucial to gain a better understanding of the difficulties involved in estimating global methane sources and sinks. One of the key challenges in this process are the varying levels of uncertainty associated with different sectors responsible for methane emissions and methane uptake. In this study, we conducted a survey to gather expert opinions regarding the uncertainty of methane data. The experts highlighted that the Global Methane Budget has the highest uncertainty and lowest confidence levels when it comes to natural sources in the bottom‐up budgets. This uncertainty primarily stems from uncertain data related to natural sources like freshwater, vegetation, and coastal/ocean areas, as well as the parameters used in wetland models. We show that 76.3% of all global methane emissions are related to human‐impact or fully man‐made. Additionally, we identify existing gaps in research and lay out a plan of action to reduce the current uncertainties associated with the Global Methane Budget. The transboundary region along the Heilongjiang River, encompassing the Russian Far East and Northeast China, possesses abundant agricultural natural resources crucial for global food security. In the face of the challenge of disruptions in the global food supply chain, the precise monitoring and exploitation of agricultural resources in the Heilongjiang Basin becomes imperative. This study employed deep learning to classify crop status in 2023 in the Heilongjiang Basin using Sentinel-2 satellite remote sensing images at a 10 m resolution. Various vegetation indices, including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), the Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (MSAVI), and others, were computed and analyzed for different crops. The Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform was utilized for validation point sampling based on plot objects. The random forest (RF) classification method was successfully employed to classify and identify major crops in the study area (wheat, maize, rice, and soybean), as well as wetlands, tree cover, grassland, water, and constructed land, with an overall classification accuracy of 86%. Tree cover dominated the land cover, constituting 62%, while wheat, maize, rice, and soybeans accounted for 7% of the total area. Of these, soybeans occupied the largest area (57,646.60 hectares), followed by rice (53,209.53 hectares), maize (39,998.37 hectares), and wheat (8782.31 hectares). This study demonstrated that sample selection based on plot objects facilitates efficient sample labeling, providing insights into crop classification in other, potentially larger, areas. Phragmites australis is a prevalent species in the Chongming Dongtan wetland and is capable of thriving in various tidal flat environments, including high salinity habitats. P. australis population displays inconsistent ecological performances, highlighting the need to uncover their survival strategies and mechanisms in tidal flats with diverse soil salinities. Upon comparing functional traits of P. australis at multiple tidal flats (low, middle, and high) and their responses to soil physicochemical properties, this study aimed to clarify the salt-tolerant strategy of P. australis and the corresponding mechanisms. These results showed that leaf characteristics, such as specific leaf area and leaf drymatter content, demonstrated more robust stability to soil salinity than shoot height and dry weight. Furthermore, as salt stress intensified, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxisome (POD) in P. australis leaves at low tidal flat exhibited an increased upward trend compared to those at other tidal flats. The molecular mechanism of salt tolerance in Phragmites australis across various habitats was investigated using transcriptome sequencing. Weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) combined with differentially expressed genes (DEGs) screened out 3 modules closely related to high salt tolerance and identified 105 core genes crucial for high salt tolerance. Further research was carried out on the few degraded populations at low tidal flat, and 25 core geneswere identified by combiningWGCNA and DEGs. A decrease in the activity of ferroptosis marker gonyautoxin-4 and an increase in the content of Fe3+ in the degenerated groupwere observed, indicating that ferroptosis might participate in degradation. Furthermore, correlation analysis indicated a possible regulatory network between salt tolerance and ferroptosis. Background and Aim: The ban on antibiotic growth promoters adversely affects the physiological condition and health of poultry. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of encapsulated Acalypha australis L. leaf extract, chitosan, or a combination of both on the physiological and intestinal conditions of broiler chickens. Materials and Methods: A total of 280 Cobb broiler chicks were randomly distributed into four groups: Basal feed without additives (CNTL), basal feed with 0.01% encapsulated A. australis leaf extract (EALE), 0.01% chitosan (CHIT), and 0.01% EALE and 0.01% chitosan (EACH). Sample collection and data measurement were conducted on day 36. Results: There was a tendency (p = 0.08) for EACH bird to have a higher body weight than the other groups. Feed consumption was higher (p < 0.05) in EACH than in EALE and CHIT. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was lower (p < 0.05) in EALE, CHIT, and EACH than in CNTL. Erythrocyte numbers were lower (p < 0.05) in EALE than in CNTL and EACH. Hematocrit was lower (p < 0.05) in EALE and CHIT groups than in the other two groups. There was a tendency (p = 0.09) for heterophils to be higher in EACH than in CNTL. Thrombocyte counts were lower (p < 0.05) in EACH group than in the other groups. Serum globulin levels were higher (p < 0.05) in EACH than in CNTL and CHIT. The albumin-to-globulin ratio was higher (p < 0.05) in CNTL than in EALE and EACH. Coliform bacteria tended to be lower (p = 0.05) in the cecum of EACH broilers than that of other broilers. Similarly, the ratio of Lactic acid bacteria to coliforms tended to be higher (p = 0.08) in the cecum of EACH group than that in the other groups. Treatments did not influence the intestinal morphology of broiler chickens (p > 0.05). Conclusion: A combination of EALE and chitosan as feed additives enhanced the final body weight and feed efficiency (FCR) of broilers. These additives also increased the levels of heterophils, serum globulin, the ratio of LAB to coliforms, and reduced thrombocytes, albumin-to-globulin ratio, and cecal coliform bacteria. Acalypha australis L. 1753 is a potherb popular among Asian populations and is a traditional herbal medicine. In the current study, the overall genetic diversity of A. australis still needs to be better. Here, we assembled and characterized the complete plastome of A. australis. The plastome is 168,885 bp in length with a large single-copy (LSC) of 94,576 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) of 19,715 bp, and two copies of inverted repeat region (IRs) of 27,297 bp each. The overall GC content is 34.9%. The plastome contains 127 genes, including 83 protein-coding genes, 36 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenomic analysis of the representative species of Euphorbiaceae showed that A. australis and A. hispida formed a monophyletic sister clade. The results of this study will support further research on the evolution and conservation of the Euphorbiaceae species; they will benefit pharmaceutical applications and ornamentation of the medicinal plant A. australis. Seed‐based restoration of wetlands is often necessary to improve important ecosystem functions (e.g., invasion resistance and habitat provisioning) and meet society's need for wetland ecosystem services such as supporting recreational activities and improving water quality. However, persistent questions remain about the composition and sowing density of seed mixes needed to restore robust native wetland plant communities. In Great Salt Lake wetlands (Utah, USA), the revegetation of native species is crucial to recovering critical habitat and preventing reinvasion of the invasive, non‐native grass Phragmites australis and other invasive species (e.g., Typha spp.). In greenhouse and field experiments, we investigated the effects of seed mix composition and sowing density on plant community reassembly. We predicted that seed mixes containing native forb species with resource‐preempting traits (e.g., rapid seedling emergence and high aboveground growth rate) and high sowing densities (>5500 pure live seed m−2), would increase native plant light acquisition and establishment, thereby limiting invasive species. To our surprise, the effect of seed mix composition on native plant performance (cover and biomass) varied among the experiments, with distinct differences between plant functional groups arising. Native forb species had the highest performance in the greenhouse, but native grasses performed better in the field. Although multiple seed mix compositions show promise for establishing high native cover and biomass, these mixes may not always suppress invasive species. Interestingly, seed mix composition most often affected plant performance independent of sowing density. However, in one greenhouse experiment, we found that only slow‐growing mixes required a high sowing density to maximize native cover, an indication that the ideal sowing density may depend on the seed mix composition. Our research also supports the idea that in addition to reducing propagules of invasive species via appropriate management strategies, the application of higher sowing densities (>5500 pure live seed m−2) may lead to more favorable outcomes when a high density of invasive plant seeds remains or stressful field conditions are present. This research contributes to knowledge of plant community reestablishment in wetlands and demonstrates how seed‐based restoration strategies can catalyze native species revegetation and, in some situations, reduce the cover of invasive species. Aquatic invertebrates provide important ecosystem services, including decomposition and nutrient cycling, and provide nutrition for birds, fish, amphibians, and bats. Thus, the effects of agricultural land management practices on aquatic invertebrates are relevant to farmers, wildlife biologists, and policymakers. Here, we used data on aquatic invertebrates (159 taxa, 73 to species, 75 to genus/family) collected in 40 wetlands in the Canadian prairies to test for direct and indirect relationships among land management types (perennial cover, organic, minimum tillage, conventional), landscape structure (cropland and wetland cover within the surrounding landscape), and water quality (total nutrient levels, turbidity) on species richness of invertebrates using structural equation modelling. Additionally, we assessed variation in community composition within and among wetlands in different land use management types using a direct gradient analysis and variance partitioning. The direct effects of land management type were not supported but we found strong supportive evidence that effects of land management on richness were significantly mediated through cropland cover, nutrient levels, and turbidity. After controlling for these indirect effects, aquatic invertebrate richness decreased along a gradient from the lowest to the highest farming intensity, i.e., richness decreased from perennial cover sites to organic to minimum tillage to conventional sites. Support was also found for negative effects of nutrient levels and turbidity on richness. We did not find significant support for differences in gamma diversity or a simple test (homogeneity of multivariate dispersions) of differences in turnover among land management types; however, land management had a significant effect in distance-based redundancy analysis. Taken together, these results suggest that focusing conservation efforts on reducing cropland erosion and nutrient inputs to wetlands and creating more permanent cover may be effective strategies for conserving richness of aquatic invertebrates in agricultural landscapes in this region. This paper evaluates an experimental wetland as part of a pilot soil reclamation project in a mining area. The wetland was constructed using materials of mining origin from the area; most reactive materials of acid pH were stabilised using limestone filler. The study selected macrophytes that are tolerant to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and resistant to salinity, namely Phragmites australis, Juncus effusus, and Iris pseudacorus. These macrophytes were then placed in pots containing substrates composed of different mixtures of topsoil, peat, and mining waste (black or yellow sand). A thorough analysis of the physicochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the materials included studies of PTE mobilisation. This study emphasises the significance of the rhizosphere in directing the transfer of PTEs to the plant and the correlation between the substrate and the development of plant defence mechanisms, such as the formation of Fe-plates. Scanning electron microscopy was used to highlight these aspects and validate the results of the analytical determinations. These wetlands can be proposed as a phytoremediation strategy for areas affected by mining and maritime influence. They are easy to construct and remain stable, providing important ecosystem services such as the natural attenuation of acid mine drainage, support for vegetation development and fauna, and a clean ecosystem. Wetland vegetation and ecology of Lake Abaya in the southern Ethiopia was studied to determine floristic composition, plant community type and vegetation ecology. A total of 102 plots were laid along transects that were set up preferentially across areas where there were rapid changes in vegetation or marked environmental gradients to collect data on estimate of percentage aerial cover of plant species and environmental variables. Vegetation data was analyzed by agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis using similarity ratio as a resemblance index and Ward's linkage method. Multivariate data analysis was performed using appropriate packages in R version 2.14.0. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to explore the relationship between the species composition and environmental variables. The environmental data included in the CCA were determined using stepwise backward and forward selection of variables by ANOVA test. Statistical measurement regarding species diversity, richness and evenness of the plant community types was carried out by using Shannon-Wiener diversity indices. A total of 92 plant species belonging to 66 genera and 34 families were identified. Families Poaceae, Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Cyperaceae, Solanaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Amaranthaceae account for about 56.99% of the total proportion. Based on the cluster analysis, five plant community types were identified. The most important factors influencing the plant species composition and pattern of wetland plant communities were water drainage, water depth, land use, slope, altitude, and hydrogeomorphology. The impact of climate warming on soil microbial communities can significantly influence the global carbon cycle. Coastal wetlands, in particular, are susceptible to changes in soil microbial community structure due to climate warming and the presence of invasive plant species. However, there is limited knowledge about how native and invasive plant wetland soil microbes differ in their response to warming. In this study, we investigated the temporal dynamics of soil microbes (prokaryotes and fungi) under experimental warming in two coastal wetlands dominated by native Phragmites australis (P. australis) and invasive Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora). Our research indicated that short-term warming had minimal effects on microbial abundance, diversity, and composition. However, it did accelerate the succession of soil microbial communities, with potentially greater impacts on fungi than prokaryotes. Furthermore, in the S. alterniflora wetland, experimental warming notably increased the complexity and connectivity of the microbial networks. While in the P. australis wetland, it decreased these factors. Analysis of robustness showed that experimental warming stabilized the co-occurrence network of the microbial community in the P. australis wetland, but destabilized it in the S. alterniflora wetland. Additionally, the functional prediction analysis using the Faprotax and FunGuild databases revealed that the S. alterniflora wetland had a higher proportion of saprotrophic fungi and prokaryotic OTUs involved in carbon degradation (p < 0.05). With warming treatments, there was an increasing trend in the proportion of prokaryotic OTUs involved in carbon degradation, particularly in the S. alterniflora wetland. Therefore, it is crucial to protect native P. australis wetlands from S. alterniflora invasion to mitigate carbon emissions and preserve the health of coastal wetland ecosystems under future climate warming in China.
