OBJECTIVE Cerenkov photons have distinctive features from scintillation photons. Among them is their polarization: their electric field is always perpendicular to the direction of propagation of light and parallel to the plane of incidence. Scintillation photons are instead considered unpolarized. APPROACH This study aims at understanding and optimizing the reflectance of polarized Cerenkov photons for optical Monte Carlo simulation of scintillation detectors with Geant4/GATE. First, the Cerenkov emission spectrum and polarization were implemented in the previously developed look-up-table Davis model of crystal reflectance. Next, we modified Geant4/GATE source code to account for scintillation and Cerenkov photons LUTs simultaneously. Then, we performed optical Monte Carlo simulations in BGO using GATE to show the effect of Cerenkov features on the photons' momentum at the photodetector face, using two surface finishes, with and without reflector. MAIN RESULTS In this work, we describe the new features added to the algorithm and GATE. We showed that Cerenkov characteristics affect their probability to be reflected/refracted and thus their travel path within a material. SIGNIFICANCE We showed the importance of accounting for accurate Cerenkov photons reflectance while performing advanced optical Monte Carlo simulations.

An instrument has been developed to study surface roughness by measuring the angular distributions of scattered light. In our instrument, a beam from a He-Ne laser illuminates the surface at an angle of incidence which may be varied. The scattered li,.ght'distribution is detected by an array of 87 fiber optic sensors positioned in a semicircular yoke which can be rotated about its axis so that the scattered radiation may be sampled over an entire hemisphere. The output from the detector array is digitized, stored, and analyzed in a laboratory computer. The initial experiments have concentrated 'on measurements of stainless steel surfaces which are highly two-dimensional and which yield scattering distributions that are localized in the plane of incidence. The results are analyzed by comparing the angular scattering data with theoretical angular scattering distributions computed from digitized roughness profiles measured by a stylus instrument. The theoretical distributions are calculated by substituting the roughness profiles into the operand of an integral equation for electromagnetic scattering developed by Beckmann and Spizzichino. This approach directly tests the accuracy of the basic optical theory.

The diffraction of electromagnetic waves at the surface periodic structures accompanied by strong anomalous effects in different diffraction orders is considered in detail for high-contrast interfaces. We restrict discussion by the transverse magnetic polarization of the incident wave (the magnetic field is orthogonal to the plane of incidence) and the simplest geometry when the plane of incidence is orthogonal to the grating grooves. The most attention is devoted to the strong maxima and minima of the energy flux density accompanying specific grazing propagation of some diffraction order. Relation to other anomalies, both Rayleigh and the resonance ones is discussed as well.

The performance of solar systems depends on the effective incident solar energy on the capture surface. This factor is dependent on the geographic position, the orientation of the surface, atmospheric conditions, and other geo-climatic factors. Solar trackers, typically uni- and biaxial, are used to optimize the capture of solar radiation via movement of the plane of incidence of these devices. A reliable estimation of the energy gain of these trackers with respect to a fixed surface facilitates more accurate analyses of the feasibility, operation, and maintenance of solar ventures. In this work, a method for estimating the relative energy gain of uni- and biaxial solar trackers is developed. This approach applies to locations between the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle, using geographic coordinates and the altitude of the location of interest, providing daily results throughout the year. Unlike empirical results or case studies, the proposed method applies to any location and has a low error. It can be implemented using iterative algorithms with a low computational cost and can be easily utilized by researchers and technicians in the field.

In this paper, it is shown that under the conditions of total internal reflection of plane homogeneous electromagnetic waves at the interface of a hyperbolic metamaterial and an ordinary isotropic medium, special inhomogeneous electromagnetic waves are excited in certain circumstances near the surface of the metamaterial and their amplitude changes with distance according to the non-exponential law. The existence conditions for such waves are established for the case when the optical axis is located within the interface plane and forms an angle with the plane of incidence. The energy flux and the energy density of special inhomogeneous waves in a hyperbolic metamaterial are determined.

In this paper, we present a novel configuration of an optical angle-of-incidence (AOI) sensor based on the application of a freeform mirror. The main challenge in designing this mirror was to provide a strictly linear transformation between AOI and the spatial position of the spot created on the linear detector array. Another two goals of this paper were to minimize stray light issues (improve the dynamic range) and create an intermediate focus and lateral shift in the detector position with respect to the plane of incidence. From an optical point of view, the designed mirror can thus be understood as the composition of three components: a high-numerical-aperture (NA) fully achromatic f-theta lens in one cross-section and a perfectly focusing lens, combined with a deviating prism in the second (orthogonal) cross-section. In comparison to the standard &ldquo, shade&rdquo, methods, the proposed approach allows a constant angular resolution to be maintained over the entire field of view. The mirror was designed on the basis of fundamental geometrical rules by numerically solving differential problems using an innovative scheme based on the minimization of the specific merit function. The proposed method was practically applied to design a freeform mirror for a 90&deg, /120&deg, field-of-view sensor, showing a satisfactory performance.

When the trajectory of an incident beam is oriented parallel to the grooves of a periodic grating structure the radiation beam is diffracted off-plane orthogonal to the plane of incidence. The diffraction efficiency in this condition is very high and in a grating with a sawtooth profile it can approach the reflection coefficient for a simple mirror, when the diffraction order of interest follows the direction for specular reflection at the flat part of the steps. When this concept is used in a plane grating in a monochromator for synchrotron radiation sources, the incident beam is almost always collimated in order to minimize any deterioration of the beam properties due to aberrations, which will be introduced in the diffraction process when an uncollimated beam is used. These aberrations are very severe when the groove density is constant. It will be shown that the effect of these aberrations can be corrected after the diffraction by the use of astigmatic focusing. The latter can be provided by a crossed mirror pair with different focal lengths in the corresponding orthogonal directions. Then a monochromator based on this concept can provide source size limited spectral resolution in an uncollimated incident beam. This is identical to the spectral resolution that can be provided by the same grating when operated at the same position in a collimated incident beam. The source size limited spectral resolution in this case corresponds to a high spectral resolving power of better than ΔE/E = 10 000 for photon energies around 300 eV in the soft X-ray range.

International audience; We illustrate a technique by which heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation spectroscopy is performed at multiple angles of incidence in order to decompose components of the second-order susceptibility tensor when all beams are polarized parallel to the plane of incidence. As an illustration we study the non-vibrationally resonant gold response. We benchmark our results by comparing with measurements obtained in a polarization scheme that isolates a single element of the susceptibility tensor. Our technique is particularly valuable in the case of metal substrates, where the surface selection rule often prevents spectra from being acquired in multiple beam polarizations.

The reflected field calculation from the object can be described with the set of point reflectors with the coordinates in electromagnetic wave plane of incidence corresponding to two-dimensional grid nodes with rather small-sized step. At the same time, the single scattering model which does not consider the re-reflection and point elements cross impact is used in the reflected field calculations. The rapid direct and inverse transformation algorithm is used. The numerical solution algorithms of the direct and inverse scattering problems on the object are offered. The method uses the ray representations scattering fields which are based on the Huygens-Fresnel principle. The graphic diagram of the reciprocal object positioning and the observation plane from the reflected electromagnetic field object is represented. The double reflecting Gaussian surface is graphically figured. The figures of the module and the complex amplitude electric field strength of the reflected wave from a double Gaussian surface argument are provided. To shape the surface of the unknown object the recovery shape algorithm is used, by means of reflected wave phase. This algorithm is based on finding the complex matrix elements in dependence on absolute phase, which is proportional to the appropriate point object distance.

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the beam shifts of a Gaussian beam reflected by an air-glass interface at Brewster incidence. For a linearly polarized incident beam, the reflected beam will undergo a spatial spin splitting within the plane of incidence. This spin splitting is up to 83 μm when the incident beam waist is 90 μm. Additionally, the reflected beam will be deflected along the direction perpendicular to the incident plane, i.e., undergo an angular shift. The maximum angular shift has been theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed. Both the spatial spin splitting and angular shift can be controlled by the incident polarization state. These controllable giant beam shifts have potential applications in the design of spin-photonic devices and the optical sensing.

The existing polarization-insensitive filters based on two dimensional (2-D) grating are mostly under normal incidence. However, in filtering optical devices, the normal incidence regime is usually avoided because it requires the use of beam separators which yields a loss of efficiency. Herein, we present a compact method to realize polarization-independent filter under oblique incidence, which is implemented on 2-D crossed grating in the telecommunication region. Plane of incidence is set to be in xz plane and three different polarization angles (0°, 45°, and 90°) are used to demonstrate the polarization-insensitivity. Realization of the polarization-insensitivity of the 2-D filter is based on the split feature under oblique incidence, according to the analysis of the physical mechanism. The location of the polarization-independent resonance is mainly determined by the grating period along x-axis and will right shift with increasing the period. Results show that the polarization-insensitive resonances occur at 1356.9 nm, 1372.6 nm and 1398.5 nm when the grating periods along x-axis are 830 nm, 850 nm and 870 nm, respectively. Moreover, the results and methods provided herein can be applied to search for the polarization-insensitive resonances of the 2-D grating with other planes of incidence.

A scheme of resonant terahertz (THz) radiation generation by non-linear beating of two lasers in hot magnetized plasma with step density profile is investigated. Beating lasers of frequency difference ω1 − ω2 ≈ ωp(~1 THz) is incident obliquely on plasma surface and exerts non-linear ponderomotive force on plasma electrons. The plasma electrons start oscillating in the plane of incidence and give rise to space charge field to maintain plasma neutrality. In turn, both ponderomotive force and space charge field excites a non-linear surface current, responsible for THz radiation generation on the reflection side. The coupling between plasma wave and electromagnetic wave present (inside the plasma as well as on reflection side) becomes stronger in the presence of the transverse DC magnetic field. THz radiation amplitude is optimized at an angle of incidence θ ~ 50–70°.

The behavior of one-dimensional waves propagating through media that are not homogeneous will be the focus of this chapter. We start with an examination of the behavior of planewaves impinging on a planar interface between two fluid media with different properties and then extend that analysis to multiple interfaces and to waves that impinge on such an interface from an angle that is not perpendicular to that surface. The extent of those boundaries separating regions with different acoustical properties will be much larger than the wavelength of the sound. Many cases to be examined here will assume that the extent of the boundary is infinite and the wave incident on such an interface will be both reflected back into the medium from which it originated and be transmitted into the second medium on the other side of the interface. This exploration concludes with consideration of wave propagation through a medium whose properties change slowly and continuously through space resulting in curved ray paths. If the variation of sound speed is linear with height or depth, then the ray paths are arcs of circles. Complicated sound speed profiles will be approximated by piecewise-linear segments that have constant sound speed gradients.

A novel deflection effect of an intense laser beam with spin angular momentum is revealed theoretically by an analytical modeling using radiation pressure and momentum balance of laser plasma interaction in the relativistic regime, as a deviation from the law of reflection. The reflected beam deflects out of the plane of incidence with a deflection angle up to several milliradians, when a non-linear polarized laser, with the intensity $I_0\sim10^{19}$W/cm$^2$ and duration around tens of femtoseconds, is obliquely incident and reflected by an overdense plasma target. This effect originates from the asymmetric radiation pressure caused by spin angular momentum of the laser photons. The dependence of the deflection angle of a Gaussian-type laser on the parameters of laser pulse and plasma foil is theoretically derived, which is also confirmed by three dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of circularly polarized laser beams with the different intensity and pulse duration.

We report excitation of the spin-polarized currents in CuSe nanocrystalline films and demonstrate that the inversion of the excitation photon helicity reverses the direction of the photocurrent propagating perpendicular to the plane of incidence. By performing measurements of the photocurrent propagating both along and perpendicular to the plane of incidence, we show that the observed spin-polarized currents originate from the circular surface photogalvanic effect (C-SPGE). In contrast to the conventional circular photogalvanic effect, which is associated with spin-orbit interaction and can be observed in gyrotropic media, the C-SPGE originates from the scattering of the spin-polarized charge carriers on the surface. We demonstrate that in CuSe films, the C-SPGE gives rise to the photon helicity sensitive photoresponse, making this material attractive for optoelectronics and spintronics applications.

Reflection and refraction of SH- wave propagation at the intersecting plane between an orthotropic media and two semi infinite dry sandy half spaces is analyzed with possible applications. The observation ensures that reflection and refraction coefficients are influenced by initial stress, dry sandy coefficient and angle of incidence. The graphs are designed to analyze the reflection and refraction of SH- wave in a layer sandwiched between two half spaces. Also, the variations of various amplitude ratio with frequency of incident wave striking at a particular angle of incidence are depicted graphically. The closest form of reflection and refraction coefficient have been explained mathematically.

Here, we consider coherent radio reflections routinely observed in ground-based global positioning system (GPS) reflectometry. Their footprint is often conceptualized in terms of the specular point (SP) and the first Fresnel zone (FFZ). Such infinitesimal point and finite zone can be generalized into a spatially continuous sensitivity kernel (SK). The SK represents a diffraction pattern, as the importance of each surface portion depends on its scattered field contribution in power and phase. We measured the SK of a GPS radio reflection under bipath reception conditions. The SK exhibited oscillations along the plane of incidence. The envelope of oscillations peaked near the SP and persisted in its decay well beyond the FFZ. Within the FFZ, sensitivity was skewed toward the antenna. This experiment suggests the feasibility of overcoming the diffraction limit and resolving features smaller than the FFZ with the exploitation of GPS diffraction patterns. When a sound wave propagates in a water medium bounded by a smooth surface wave, reflection from a wave crest can lead to focusing and result in rapid variation of the received waveform as the surface wave moves [Tindle, Deane, and Preisig, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 125, 66-72 (2009)]. In prior work, propagation paths have been constrained to be in a plane parallel to the direction of corrugated surface waves, i.e., a two-dimensional (2-D) propagation problem. In this paper, the azimuthal dependence of sound propagation as a three-dimensional (3-D) problem is investigated using an efficient, time-domain Helmholtz-Kirchhoff integral formulation. When the source and receiver are in the plane orthogonal to the surface wave direction, the surface wave curvature vanishes in conventional 2-D treatments and the flat surface simply moves up and down, resulting in minimal temporal variation of the reflected signal intensity. On the other hand, the 3-D propagation analysis reveals that a focusing phenomenon occurs in the reflected signal due to the surface wave curvature formed along the orthogonal plane, i.e., out-of-plane scattering.

Modeling of terrain topography is crucial for vegetated areas given that even small slopes impact and alter the radar wave interactions between the ground and the overlying vegetation. Current missions either exclude pixels with large topographic slopes or disregard the terrain topography entirely, potentially accumulating substantial modeling errors and therefore impacting the retrieval performance over such sloped pixels. The underlying terrain topography needs to be considered and modeled to obtain a truly general and accurate radar scattering model. In this paper, a flexible and modular model is developed: the vegetation is considered by a multilayered multispecies vegetation model capable of representing a wide range of vegetation cover types ranging from bare soil to dense forests. The ground is incorporated with the stabilized extended boundary condition method, allowing the representation of an $N$ -layered soil structure with rough interfaces. Terrain topography is characterized by a 2-D slope with two tilt angles $(\alpha, \beta)$ . Simulation results for an evergreen forest show the impact of a 2-D slope for a range of tilt angles: a 10 $^{\circ}$ tilt in the plane of incidence translates to a change of up to 15 dB in HH, 10 dB in VV, and 1.5 dB in HV for the total radar backscatter. Terrain topography is shown to be crucial for accurate forward modeling, especially over forested areas.

To ensure the safety of radiation oncology patients needed to provide consistent functional characteristics of the medical linear accelerators, which affect the accuracy of dose delivery. To this end, their quality control procedures, which include the calibration of radiation output of the linac, the error in determining the dose reference value during which must not exceed 2 %, is provided. The aim is to develop a methodology for determining the error (difference between a measured value of quantity and its true value) in determining this value, depending on the characteristics of the collimator, the source to surface distance pointer, lasers, radiation field and treatment table. To achieve the objectives have been carried out dosimetric measurements of Trilogy S/N 3567 linac dose distributions, on the basis of which dose errors depending on the accuracy setting the zero position of the collimator, the deviation of the collimator rotation isocenter, the sourcesurface distance pointer accuracy, field size accuracy, the accuracy of lasers and treatment table positioning were obtained. It was found that the greatest impact on the value of the error has the error in the optical SSD indication and the error in the lasers position in the plane perpendicular to the plane of incidence of the radiation beam (up to 3.64 % for the energy of 6 MV). Dose errors caused by error in the field size were different for two photon energies, and reached 2.54 % for 6 MeV and 1.33% for 18 MeV. Errors caused by the rest of the characteristic do not exceed 1 %. Thus, it is possible to express the results of periodic quality control of these devices integrated in linac in terms of dose and use them to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the possibility of clinical use of a linear accelerator for oncology patients irradiation on the basis of the calibration of radiation output in case of development of techniques that allow to analyze the influence dosimetric characteristics the radiation beam.

Superconductors with unconventional pairings have been a fascinating subject of research, for which a central issue is to explore effects that can be used to characterize the pairing. The process of Andreev reflection--the reflection of an electron as a hole at a normal-mental-superconductor interface by transferring a Cooper pair into the superconductor--offers a basic mechanism to probe the pairing through transport. Here we predict that in Andreev reflection from unconventional superconductors, the reflected hole acquires an anomalous spatial shift normal to the plane of incidence, arising from the unconventional pairing. The transverse shift is sensitive to the superconducting gap structure, exhibiting characteristic features for each pairing type, and can be detected as voltage signals. Our work not only unveils a fundamentally new effect but also suggests a powerful new technique capable of probing the structure of unconventional pairings., 4 pages, 4 figures

Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) is an intriguing effect that occurs in a normal-superconductor-normal junction. In CAR, an incoming electron from one terminal is coherently scattered as an outgoing hole into the other terminal. Here, we reveal that there exists a transverse spatial shift in CAR, i.e., the plane of CAR for the outgoing hole may have a sizable transverse shift from the plane of incidence for the incoming electron. We explicitly demonstrate the effect in a model system based on Weyl semimetals. We further show that the effect is quite general and exists when the terminals have sizable spin-orbit coupling. In addition, we find that the corresponding shift in the elastic cotunneling process shows different behaviors, and it vanishes when the two terminals are identical. Based on these findings, we suggest possible experimental setups for detecting the effect, which may also offer an alternative method for probing CAR., 10 pages, 6 figures

We present an efficient method for the design of anomalous reflectors for acoustic waves. The approach is based on the fact that the anomalous reflector is actually a diffraction grating in which the amplitude of all the modes is negligible except for the one traveling towards the desired direction. A supercell of drilled cavities in an acoustically rigid surface is proposed as the basic unit cell, and analytical expressions for an inverse diffraction problem are derived. It is found that the the number of cavities required for the realization of an anomalous reflector is equal to the number of diffracted modes to cancel, and this number depends on the relationship between the incident and reflected angles. Then, the “retroreflection” effect is obtained by just one cavity per unit cell; also, with only two cavities it is possible to change the reflection angle of a normally incident wave, and five cavities are enough to design a general retroreflector changing the incident and reflected angles at oblique incidence. Finally, the concept of Snell’s law violation is extended not only to the incident and reflected angles, but also to the plane in which it happens, and a device based on a single cavity in a square lattice is designed in such a way that the reflection plane is rotated π/4 with respect to the plane of incidence. Numerical simulations are performed to support the predictions of the analytical expressions, and an excellent agreement is found.

Conical diffraction is obtained when a radiation beam impinges onto a periodically ruled surface structure parallel or almost parallel to the ruling. In this condition the incident intensity is diffracted through an arc, away from the plane of incidence. The diffracted intensity thus lies on a cone, which leads to the name `conical diffraction'. In this configuration almost no part of the ruled structure will produce any shadowing effect for the incident or the diffracted beam. Then, compared with a grating in the classical orientation, relatively higher diffraction efficiencies will be observed for fewer diffraction orders. When the incident beam is perfectly parallel to the grooves of a rectangular grating profile, the symmetry of the setup causes diffraction of the intensity symmetrically around the plane of incidence. This situation was previously tested experimentally in the VUV spectral range for the amplitude beam splitting of a radiation beam with a photon energy of 25 eV. In this case the ideally expected beam splitting efficiency of about 80% for the diffraction into the two first orders was confirmed for the optimum combination of groove depth and angle of grazing incidence. The feasibility of the amplitude beam splitting for hard X-rays with 12 keV photon energy by use of the same concept was theoretically confirmed. However, no related experimental data are presented yet, not even for lower energy soft X-rays. The present study reports the first experimental data for the conical diffraction from a rectangular grating profile in the tender X-ray range for photon energies of 4 keV and 6 keV. The expected symmetries are observed. The maximum absolute efficiency for beam splitting was measured to be only about 30%. As the reflectivity of the grating coating at the corresponding angle of grazing incidence was found to be only of the order of 50%, the relative beam splitting efficiency was thus 60%. This is to be compared also here with an ideally expected relative efficiency of 80%. It is predicted that a beam splitting efficiency exceeding 50% should be possible by use of more appropriate materials.

For the general solution of two-dimensional equations of dynamics of a transverse isotropic medium with the Carrier–Gassmann condition, we give a representation in terms of two resolvent functions satisfying two separate wave equations. The problem of reflection of plane waves from a rigid wall and a free surface is solved. The coefficients of reflection and transformation of the plane waves are found. These formulas yield a solution for isotropic media too. Some special cases are consideredwhere the shapes (amplitudes) of the reflectedwaves are not uniquely determined, but linearly related with the shape of the incident wave.

Modified vector formulations of the laws of reflection and refraction are presented for forward and backward waves, based on Bhattacharjee’s approach. The new formulas include cases of specular reflection, retroreflection, and positive and negative refraction.

The reflection and refraction of acoustic waves at different angles of incidence on the interface between a vapor-gas-droplet system and air are studied. From an analysis of analytical solutions, it has been found that in the case of incidence on the interface from the side of the vapor-gas-droplet medium, there is a critical angle of incidence at which the wave is completely reflected from the boundary, i.e., total internal reflection takes place. It is shown that for a certain angle of incidence on the interface both from the air side and from the mixture side and for a certain volume fraction of water in the disperse system, complete transmission of the acoustic wave through the medium is observed.

The present work aims at building up a full-wave computational model of electromagnetic nondestructive testing of composite materials produced by stacking up dielectric slabs one over the other. In each such dielectric slab, a periodic array of infinite cylindrical fibers is embedded. Electromagnetic scattering of such a multilayered, fiber-based periodic composite is investigated here for an obliquely incident plane wave, the plane of incidence of which differs from the plane orthogonal to the fibers' axes. Full-wave field representations are given first by multipole and plane wave expansions. Mode matching at boundaries between layers then yields the propagating matrices, which are applied to connect reflection and transmission coefficients of the longitudinal field components. Power reflection and transmission coefficients are obtained from time-averaged Poynting vectors. Numerical experiments with comparisons with known results illustrate the accuracy of the model proposed.

The surfaces of secondary organic aerosol particles are notoriously difficult to access experimentally, even though they are the key location where exchange between the aerosol particle phase and its gas phase occurs. Here, we overcome this difficulty by applying standard and sub- 1 cm(-1) resolution vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy to detect C-H oscillators at the surfaces of secondary organic material (SOM) prepared from the ozonolysis of α-pinene at Harvard University and at the University of California, Irvine, that were subsequently collected on Teflon filters as well as CaF2 windows using electrostatic deposition. We find both samples yield comparable SFG spectra featuring an intense peak at 2940 cm(-1) that are independent of spectral resolution and location or method of preparation. We hypothesize that the SFG spectra are due to surface-active C-H oscillators associated with the four-membered ring motif of α-pinene, which produces an unresolvable spectral continuum of approximately 50 cm(-1) width reminiscent of the similar, albeit much broader, O-H stretching continuum observed in the SFG spectra of aqueous surfaces. The optical activity of achiral nonmagnetic uniaxial metasurfaces caused by the extrinsic chirality arising from the mutual orientation of their anisotropy axis and the light plane of incidence is studied. The hyperbolic regime of the metasurfaces manifests in the amplification of the polarization rotation in the transmitted light and in the giant enhancement of the effect in the reflected light. The transition to this regime is frequency dependent and has the topological nature. The key role in the optical activity enhancement belongs to the $\sigma$-near-pole and hyperbolic $\sigma$-near-zero regimes of the metasurfaces. The hyperbolic metasurfaces based on graphene strips or metal disks, and a black phosphorus thin film as a natural hyperbolic layer are considered. The efficiency of the predicted effects depends on the metasurfaces implementation and the role of a substrate. By varying the metasurface parameters and choosing the physical realizations it is possible to design such a hyperbolic metasurface polarizer for the THz, infrared, and visible working ranges. Polarimeters are useful instruments that measure concentrations of optically active substances in a given solution. The conventional polarimetric principle consists of measuring the rotation angle of linearly polarized light. Here, we present a novel polarimeter based on the study of interference patterns. A Mach–Zehnder interferometer with linearly polarized light at the input is used. One beam passes through the liquid sample and the other is a reference beam. As the linearly polarized sample beam propagates through the optically active solution the vibration plane of the electric field will rotate. As a result, the visibility of the interference pattern at the interferometer output will decrease. Fringe contrast will be maximum when both beams present a polarization perpendicular to the plane of incidence. However, minimum visibility is obtained when, after propagation through the sample the polarization of the sample beam is oriented parallel to the plane of incidence. By using different solute concentrations, a calibration plot is obtained showing the behavior of visibility.

We propose a method to estimate the 3-D shape of surfaces with specular reflection, using a model of the difference in appearance between images reflected from a flat surface and a curved surface. First, we analyze the geometry of spatial reflection from a specular surface and how reflected light varies due to a curved surface. This is used to estimate 3-D shape. The proposed method is shown to be effective in experiments using illumination from spatially distributed light sources and a camera capturing the reflected light from curved, specular surfaces.

Reflection and transmission of an incident plane transverse wave at a plane interface between two dissimilar generalized porous thermo-elastic solid half spaces is analyzed. The theory of generalized thermo-elastic material with voids in the context of Lord–Shulman theory has been employed to set down the equations of motion and constitutive relations. The reflection and transmission coefficients for a transverse wave incident at a plane interface have been derived. Partition of energy at the interface has also been considered together with the law of balance of energy.

A theoretical approach to investigate the effects of incidence angle on reflection properties of reflectarray elements is developed for the first time. Utilizing coupled-mode theory and Floquet analysis, the dependence of reflection coefficient on incidence angles and plane of incidence is presented in terms of Q factors. A unit cell excited by a plane wave at different incidence angles is shown to have varying coupling conditions and reflection properties. Emphasis is laid on elements located on planes where extremities in performance tend to occur. Anomalous phase characteristics are observed for particular polarization and incidence angles. The antenna element properties are assessed in terms of maximum reflection loss and slope of the reflection phase. A thorough analysis is performed at K a band and the results obtained are verified using full-wave simulations. Reflection coefficients over a 749-element reflectarray aperture for a broadside radiation pattern are presented for a couple of cases and the effects of coupling conditions in conjunction with incidence angles are demonstrated. The presented theory provides explicit physical intuition and guidelines for efficient and accurate reflectarray design.

Analytical expressions are obtained for and used in calculations of the transmittance of thin (on the order of a wavelength) layers under conditions of total reflection at one of the boundaries in the general case of linearly polarized radiation where the oscillation azimuth of the incident wave is not 0 or π/2. The transmittances of this kind of layer for TE (s-polarization) and TM (p-polarization) waves are compared. The analytic expressions are used to calculate the dependence of the energy transmittance on layer thickness for a fixed angle of incidence and different oscillation azimuths of a linearly polarized incident wave, as well as for several angles of incidence (including the critical angle) with a fixed oscillation azimuth.

Narrowband pass filters are generally poor as narrowband angle filters. A tilted narrowband pass filter, however, is an improved narrowband angle filter, but only for rays in one plane of incidence. It is shown that a combination of two tilted narrowband pass filters will select light from all narrow angle patches in an incident cone. Furthermore, a design is presented for a narrow-angle filter for three wavelengths, enabling transmission of tristimulus color gamut images, while rejecting out-of-band sources and off-angle sources.

The directional reflection characteristics of anisotropic surfaces play an important role in the precise modeling of radiative heat transfer and target detection. Nevertheless, the directional reflection characteristics of anisotropic machined surfaces have not been fully understood. In this work, an accurate automated scatterometer was built to investigate the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of anisotropic machined surfaces produced by various kinds of machining methods, including plain milling, planer processing, and flat grinding. The effects of the incident angle, machining method, and surface roughness on the bidirectional reflectance properties were studied. The results indicate that the incident azimuthal angle affects the BRDF of a plain-milling surface in a vitally different way compared to planer processing and flat grinding. When the plane of incidence orients parallel to the macroscopic surface strips, the plain-milling surface displays diffuse dominated reflection (reflected energy distributed over 90°), whereas the other two show mirror-like properties, only distributed about 4° around the specular direction. Under the same surface roughness, the plain-milling surface shows the weakest reflected intensity, while the flat-grinding surface has the strongest.

International audience; Optical nanoantennas are widely used to build absorbing metasurfaces with applications in photodetection, solar cells, and sensing. Most of the time, the nanoantennas are assembled as a periodic distribution, but there have been various works where disordered arrays are used, either to get rid of diffraction orders or due to a fabrication process that prevents any determined distribution. Here, we investigate both theoretically and experimentally the unavoidable scattering introduced by such disorders. By introducing a perturbation on the positions of 1D arrays of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) nanoantennas, the light is scattered rather than increasingly absorbed. The scattering occurs only in the plane of incidence and on a given spectral range. We show how this scattering can be manipulated from 0% to 55% of the incoming light.

Grazing incidence X-ray fluorescence spectra of nano-scaled periodic line structures were recorded at the four crystal monochromator beamline in the laboratory of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt at the synchrotron radiation facility BESSY II. For different tilt angles between the lines and the plane of incidence of the monochromatic synchrotron radiation, spectral features are observed which can be understood and explained with calculations of the emerging X-ray standing wave (XSW) field. On the other hand, there are structures, i.e., pronounced modulations above the substrate's critical angle of external total reflection, which are not included in the XSW concept. Novel geometrical optics calculations can reproduce these structures taking the sample's specific geometric conditions into account.

The non-normal incidence of semi-guided plane waves on step-like or tapered transitions between thin film regions with different thicknesses, an early problem of integrated optics, is being reconsidered. As a step beyond the common effective index picture, we compare two approaches on how this problem can be tackled—at least approximately—by nowadays readily available simulation tools for integrated optics design. Accepting the scalar approximation, using an ansatz of harmonic field dependence on the position along the interface, the 3-D problem reduces to a 2-D Helmholtz problem, for guided wave input and transparent-influx boundary conditions, with an effective permittivity that depends on the incidence angle. Alternatively, one complements the structure with a second mirrored interface, such that the 2-D cross section of a wide multimode rib waveguide emerges. Constraints for transverse resonance then permit to translate the propagation constants of its polarized modes into discrete samples of the phase changes experienced by an in-plane guided wave upon total internal reflection at the sidewalls.

In this paper, we propose and theoretically analyze a stratified waveguide structure comprised of diamond-like carbon (DLC), porous silicon (PS), and left-handed material (LHM) subjected to incident light in order to achieve low reflection and high transmission. The proposed waveguide structure is situated between two half free spaces and a TE polarized plane wave incident on it. The main parameters of each material are given and the required equations for the electromagnetic plane wave propagation are presented. Transfer matrix method is implemented to find out the characteristics of the reflected and transmitted powers. In the numerical results, the mentioned powers are computed and illustrated as a function of the incidence angle, the frequency, and the slab thickness to demonstrate the main parameters for low reflection and high transmission. These theoretical parameters could be useful to the researchers and designers working in the area of solar cells and optical sensors.

The work presented in this paper focuses on the reflection and transmission coefficients of an incident plane wave which impinges obliquely a plane of identical spheres arranged periodically in a homogeneous host with infinite extension. The Bloch theorem of periodic structure and the addition theorem of spherical wave functions are used to obtain the total scattering wave from all spherical scatterers periodically arranged in a plane. The total scattering wave in series form of spherical wave functions is then transformed into plane wave form in order to derive the reflection and transmission coefficients. Some numerical examples are given for different size, material constants and array patterns of spherical scatterers, and their influences on the reflection and transmission coefficients of a plane of spheres are discussed based on the numerical results. This study implies that a plane of spheres can be elaborately designed to serve as a sound barrier at a certain frequency range.

This paper analyzes the reflection and refraction of plane wave incidences at the interface between magnetoelectroelastic (MEE) and liquid media. The MEE medium is assumed to be transversely isotropic and the liquid medium to be nonviscous. Three cases, i.e., the coupled quasipressure wave incidence from the MEE medium, the coupled quasi-shear vertical wave incidence from the MEE medium, and the pressure wave incidence from the liquid medium, are discussed. The expressions of reflection and transmission coefficients varying with the incident angle are obtained. This investigation would be useful to the MEE acoustic device field.

The problem regarding the reflection of plane waves in a transversely isotropic dissipative medium is considered, in which we are studying about the reflection of incidence waves in initially stressed dissipative half space. After solving the governing equations, we find the two complex quasi-P (qP) and quasi-SV (qSV) waves. The occurrence of reflected waves is studied to calculate the reflection coefficient and the energy partition of incidence wave at the plane boundary of the dissipative medium. Numerical example is considered for the reflection coefficient and the partition of incident energy, in which we study about the effect of rotation, initial stresses and magnetic field.

The reflection of light is governed by the laws first described by Augustin-Jean Fresnel: on internal reflection, light acquires a phase shift, which depends on its polarization direction with respect to the plane of incidence. For a conical reflector, the cylindrical symmetry is echoed in an angular variation of this phase shift, allowing us to create light modes with phase and polarization singularities. Here we observe the phase and polarization profiles of light that is back reflected from a solid glass cone and, in the case of circular input light, discover that not only does the beam contain orbital angular momentum but can trivially be converted to a radially polarized beam. Importantly, the Fresnel coefficients are reasonably stable across the visible spectrum, which we demonstrate by measuring white light polarization profiles. This discovery provides a highly cost-effective technique for the generation of broadband orbital angular momentum and radially polarized beams., Under total internal reflection light acquires a phase shift that depends on its polarisation. Here, the authors show that this effect can be harnessed to generate so-called vector vortex beams—light with polarization and phase singularities—when white light is back-reflected from a glass cone

A novel and simple bottom-up fabrication method for the realization of metallic nanovoid and metallic film on nanoparticle (dome) array is presented and their optical performance assessed based on experimental and theoretical investigations. The structures are created by a simple, annealing induced replica formation of a template monolayer, which is composed of submicron particles deposited on top of a thin polymer film. Angle and wavelength dependent reflection measurements indicate the possibility to excite Bragg plasmons at the prepared structures. We found an excellent agreement between the measured and simulated reflection curves, but only when the simulated reflection was averaged over several possible azimuthal lattice orientations of the hexagonal unit cell with respect to the plane of incidence.

We show that experiments clearly verify the assumptions made by the first-order two-wave coupling theory for one dimensional lossless unslanted planar volume holographic gratings using the beta-value method rather than Kogelnik's K-vector closure method. Apart from the fact that the diffraction process is elastic, a much more striking difference between the theories becomes apparent particularly in the direction of the diffracted beam in off-Bragg replay. We therefore monitored the direction of the diffracted beam as a function of the off-Bragg replay angle in two distinct cases: [a] the diffracted beam lies in the plane of incidence and [b] the sample surface normal, the grating vector and the incoming beam do not form a plane which calls for the vectorial theory and results in conical scattering.

We explored the effects of relative motion on the excitation of surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves guided by the planar interface of a metal film and a dielectric slab, both materials being isotropic and homogeneous. Electromagnetic phasors in moving and non-moving reference frames were related directly using the corresponding Lorentz transformations. Our numerical studies revealed that, in the case of a uniformly moving dielectric slab, the angle of incidence for SPP-wave excitation is highly sensitive to (i) the ratio β of the speed of motion to speed of light in free space and (ii) the direction of motion. When the direction of motion is parallel to the plane of incidence, the SPP wave is excited by p -polarized (but not s -polarized) incident plane waves for low and moderate values of β , while at higher values of β the total reflection regime breaks down. When the direction of motion is perpendicular to the plane of incidence, the SPP wave is excited by p -polarized incident plane waves for low values of β , but s -polarized incident plane waves at moderate values of β , while at higher values of β the SPP wave is not excited. In the case of a uniformly moving metal film, the sensitivity to β and the direction of motion is less obvious.

The present paper is concerned with the propagation of plane waves in a transversely isotropic generalized thermoelastic solid half-space with two temperatures. The governing equations are modified in the context of Lord and Shulman’s theory of generalized thermoelasticity and are solved to show the existence of three plane waves in the x- z plane. The reflection of these plane waves from a thermally insulated stress-free surface is also studied to obtain a system of three non-homogeneous equations in the reflection coefficients of the reflected waves. For numerical computation of the speeds and reflection coefficients, a particular material is modeled as a transversely isotropic generalized thermoelastic solid half-space. The speeds and reflection coefficients of plane waves are shown graphically against the angle of propagation to observe the effects of anisotropy. The speeds and reflection coefficients of plane waves are also shown graphically against the two-temperature parameter.
