ABSTRACTThe Fiumarella di Corleto drainage basin is an emblematic sector of the southern Apennine thrust belt in the Basilicata region (Southern Italy), which is strongly affected by landslides. Landslides both affect the urban area and the facilities related to hydrocarbon exploitation, such as the pipelines and oil wells connected with the oil centre located just outside the eastern border of the study area. Based on a detailed field survey, supported by stereoscopic analysis, a landslide inventory map has been realized, which also reports the associated processes and landforms. The relationships between the different types of landslides and the various predisposing factors like outcropping lithologies, slopes steepness, slope exposition and land use have been also investigated. The acquired data relate to a geologically complex area of the southern Apennines subject to recent uplift and represent a fundamental contribution useful for the correct management of the territory.

The Southern Apennines consist of a Cenozoic to Quaternary fold and thrust belt characterized by a complex structural architecture. In the axial portion of the chain, corresponding to the Agri Valley, folds and faults with multiple styles formed during the progressive emplacement of various tectonic units, derived from different paleodomains. In the available geological maps, the geometry of these tectonic structures is often hindered by scarce cartographic detail due to the use of basic stratigraphic subdivisions. Therefore, at the aim to better define these structures and contextually update the outcropping stratigraphic units, we realized a detailed geological map, which take into consideration not only the formation as basic stratigraphic units, but also finer subdivisions such as members or beds. Using this approach, we improved the stratigraphy of the area, we recognized new geological units and, eventually, we reconstructed the structural setting, and the tectonic evolution of the Agri Valley in detail. We investigate crustal seismic attenuation by the coda quality parameter ( Q c ) in the Gargano area (Southern Italy), using a recently released dataset composed of 191 small earthquakes (1.0 ≤ ML ≤ 2.8) recorded by the local OTRIONS and the Italian INGV seismic networks, over three years of seismic monitoring. Following the single back-scattering theoretical assumption, Q c was computed using different frequencies (in the range of 2–16 Hz) and different lapse times (from 10 to 40 s). The trend of Q c vs. frequency is the same as that observed in the adjacent Umbria-Marche region. Q c at 1 Hz varies between 11 and 63, indicating that the area is characterized by active tectonics, despite the absence of high-magnitude earthquakes in recent decades. The 3D mapping procedure, based on sensitivity kernels, revealed that the Gargano Promontory is characterized by very low and homogeneous Q c at low frequencies, and by high and heterogeneous Q c at high frequencies. The lateral variations of Q c at 12 Hz follow the trend of the Moho in this region and are in good agreement with other geophysical observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New microstructural data on the mylonites from the well-exposed Palmi shear zone (southern Calabria) are presented with the aim to shed light on both the kinematics and the geometry of the southwestern branch of the Alpine belt during Eocene. In the study area, located between the Sardinia-Corsica block and the Calabria-Peloritani terrane, previous large-scale geodynamic reconstructions suggest the presence of strike-slip or transform fault zones dissecting the southwestern branch of the Alpine belt. However, there are no field data supporting the occurrence of these structures. This paper uses vorticity analysis technique based on the aspect ratio and the long axis orientation of rigid porphyroclasts in mylonitic marbles and mylonitic granitoids, to estimate the contribution of pure and simple shear of deformation during the movement of the Palmi shear zone. Porphyroclasts aspect ratio and orientation were measured on thin sections using image analysis. Estimates of the vorticity number, Wm, indicate that the Palmi shear zone recorded general shear with a contribution of pure shear of c. 65%. Then, the Palmi shear zone can be interpreted as a segment of a left-lateral transpressive bend along the southern termination of the Eocene Alpine front. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The Corno Alto–Monte Ospedale magmatic complex crops out at the eastern border of the Adamello batholith, west of the South Giudicarie Fault (NE Italy). This complex includes tonalites, trondhjemites, granodiorites, granites and diorites exhibiting an unfoliated structure suggesting passive intrusion under extensional-to-transtensional conditions. Major, minor elements, REE and isotopic analyses and geochemical and thermodynamic modelling have been performed to reconstruct the genesis of this complex. Geochemical analyses unravel a marked heterogeneity with a lack of intermediate terms. Samples from different crust sections were considered as possible contaminants of a parental melt, with the European crust of the Serre basement delivering the best fit. The results of the thermodynamic modelling show that crustal melts were produced in the lower crust. Results of the geochemical modelling display how Corno Alto felsic rocks are not reproduced by fractional crystallization nor by partial melting alone: their compositions are intermediate between anatectic melts and melts produced by fractional crystallization. The tectonic scenario which favored the intrusion of this complex was characterized by extensional faults, active in the Southalpine domain during Eocene.
