Abstract

This work considers a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with RIS spatial correlation and electromagnetic interference (EMI). We propose a two-phase channel estimation scheme with fractional power control-aided pilot assignment to improve the estimation accuracy and system performance of RIS-aided cell-free massive MIMO systems. Additionally, we derive the closed-form expressions of the downlink spectral efficiency (SE) with conjugate beamforming to evaluate the impact of EMI among RIS elements on the system performance. Numerical results validate that the proposed two-phase scheme can compensate for the performance degradation caused by EMI in terms of estimation accuracy and downlink SE. Abstract

In this work, we investigate the impact of channel aging and electromagnetic interference (EMI) on spatially correlated reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To effectively handle channel aging and EMI, we employ a novel two-phase channel estimation scheme with fractional power control-aided pilot assignment during the uplink channel estimation phase. This scheme provides improved channel estimates compared to existing approaches. The closed-form uplink and downlink spectral efficiency (SE) expressions incorporating fractional power control are derived to enable system performance evaluation. Additionally, we introduce the system's power consumption model to analyze energy efficiency (EE). Our numerical results illustrate the theoretical results and demonstrate the system performance with channel aging and EMI. Specifically, the proposed two-phase channel estimation scheme enhances estimation accuracy, compensating for performance degradation caused by channel aging and EMI. We find that increasing the number of access points (APs), RISs, antennas per AP, and elements per RIS can help to mitigate the SE performance degradation. We also find that an optimal number of APs can be selected to achieve energy efficiency (EE) maximization. Abstract

This paper proposes a non-intrusive, declarative, dynamic and transparent system called `HiQ` to track Python program runtime information without compromising on the run-time system performance and losing insight. HiQ can be used for monolithic and distributed systems, offline and online applications. HiQ is developed when we optimize our large deep neural network (DNN) models which are written in Python, but it can be generalized to any Python program or distributed system, or even other languages like Java. We have implemented the system and adopted it in our deep learning model life cycle management system to catch the bottleneck while keeping our production code clean and highly performant. Abstract

Light has profoundly impacted modern medicine and healthcare, with numerous luminescent agents and imaging techniques currently being used to assess health and treat diseases. As an emerging concept in luminescence, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has shown great potential in biological applications due to its advantages in terms of brightness, biocompatibility, photostability, and positive correlation with concentration. This review provides a comprehensive summary of AIE luminogens applied in imaging of biological structure and dynamic physiological processes, disease diagnosis and treatment, and detection and monitoring of specific analytes, followed by representative works. Discussions on critical issues and perspectives on future directions are also included. This review aims to stimulate the interest of researchers from different fields, including chemistry, biology, materials science, medicine, etc., thus promoting the development of AIE in the fields of life and health.

24. Universality of the {\bf q}=1/2 Orbital Magnetism in the Pseudogap Phase of the High-$T_c$ superconductor $\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}$

Abstract

Several decades of debate have centered around the nature of the enigmatic pseudo-gap state in high temperature superconducting copper oxides. Recently, we reported polarized neutron diffraction measurements that suggested the existence of a magnetic texture bound to the pseudo-gap phase [Bounoua, {\it et al}. Communications Physics 5, 268 (2022)]. Such a magnetic texture is likely to involve the spontaneous appearance of loop currents within the CuO$_2$ unit cells, which give birth to complex correlated patterns. In the underdoped ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.6}}$, the magnetic structure factor of such an orbital magnetic texture gives rise to two distinct magnetic responses at {\bf q}=0 and {\bf q}=1/2. As this pattern alters the lattice translation invariance, such a state of matter could contribute to an instability of the Fermi surface. Here, we report polarized neutron scattering measurements on a nearly optimally doped high quality single crystal of ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.9}}$ that exhibits the same {\bf q}=1/2 magnetism and a weakly overdoped ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}}$ sample where this signal is no longer sizeable. The in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic neutron scattering intensities in ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.9}}$ (at {\bf q}=1/2) and ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.85}}$ (at {\bf q}=0), reported previously, display the same temperature dependent hallmarks. The magnitudes of both {\bf q}=0 and {\bf q}=1/2 magnetic signals further exhibit the same trends upon doping in ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}}$, confirming that they are likely intertwined., Comment: supplemental information + 6 figures

Abstract

We report a nano-infrared (IR) imaging study of trilayer graphene (TLG) with both ABA (Bernal) and ABC (rhombohedral) stacking orders using the scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM). With s-SNOM operating in the mid-IR region, we mapped in real space the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) of ABA-TLG and ABC-TLG, which are tunable with electrical gating. Through quantitative modeling of the plasmonic imaging data, we found that the plasmon wavelength of ABA-TLG is significantly larger than that of ABC-TLG, resulting in a sizable impedance mismatch and hence a strong plasmon reflection at the ABA/ABC lateral junction. Further analysis indicates that the different plasmonic responses of the two types of TLG are directly linked to their electronic structures and carrier properties. Our work uncovers the physics behind the stacking-dependent plasmonic responses of TLG and sheds light on future applications of TLG and the ABA/ABC junctions in IR plasmonics and planar nano-optics., Comment: 11 pages

27. Ferrous sulfate combined with ultrasound emulsified cinnamaldehyde nanoemulsion to cause ferroptosis in Escherichia coli O157:H7

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate ferroptosis in Escherichia coli O157:H7 caused by ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) and to examine the synergistic effectiveness of FeSO4 combined with ultrasound-emulsified cinnamaldehyde nanoemulsion (CALNO) on inactivation of E. coli O157:H7 in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that FeSO4 could cause ferroptosis in E. coli O157:H7 via generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and exacerbating lipid peroxidation. In addition, the results indicated that FeSO4 combined with CALNO had synergistic bactericidal effect against E. coli O157:H7 and the combined treatment could lead considerable nucleic acids and protein to release by damaging the cell membrane of E. coli O157:H7. Besides, FeSO4 combined with CALNO had a strong antibiofilm ability to inhibit E. coli O157:H7 biofilm formation by reducing the expression of genes related on biofilm formation. Finally, FeSO4 combined with CALNO exhibited the significant antibacterial activity against E. coli O157:H7 in hami melon and cherry tomato.

32. Analysis of risk factors and prognostic factors of synchronous breast and thyroid cancer

Abstract

Objective To analyze the risk and prognostic factors for synchronous breast cancer（BC）and thyroid cancer（TC）. Methods The Surveillance，Epidemiology，and End Results Program（SEER）2020 database was utilized to collect the information of patients with synchronous BC and TC（BC and TC group）and those with BC alone（BC group）. Clinical data and survival were compared between two groups. Clinical data of patients with synchronous BC and TC（BC and TC group A）and those with BC alone（BC group B）admitted to a certain hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical data and survival were also compared between two groups. Results ①Analysis of SEER database ，482 patients in BC and TC group and 500 patients in BC group. Univariate analysis revealed that age at first diagnosis and progesterone receptor（PR）were the risk factors for synchronous BC and TC（both P < 0.05）. Multivariate analysis found that age at first diagnosis（OR=1.800，95% CI：1.387-2.337，P < 0.001）and PR（OR=1.364，95% CI：1.023-1.818，P = 0.034）were the independent risk factors for synchronous BC and TC. Excluding those with incomplete follow-up data，univariate analysis indicated that tumor diameter and PR were the prognostic factors for synchronous BC and TC（both P < 0.05）；multivariate analysis revealed that tumor diameter was an independent prognostic factor for synchronous BC and TC（OR=4.328，95% CI：1.410-13.288，P = 0.010）. Univariate analysis found that age at first diagnosis and tumor diameter were the prognostic factors for BC alone（both P < 0.05）；multivariate analysis identified that age at first diagnosis（OR = 2.443，95% CI ：1.014-5.889，P = 0.047）and tumor diameter（OR = 2.030，95% CI：1.039-3.969，P = 0.038）were the independent prognostic factors for BC alone. ②Analysis of inpatients，there were 40 patients each in BC and TC group A and BC group A. Univariate analysis indicated that menstrual status，PR，proliferation index Ki-67，and TT3 were the risk factors for synchronous BC and TC（all P < 0.05），multivariate analysis found that menstrual status（synchronous BC and TC versus BC alone，OR=0.175，95% CI：0.052-0.591，P = 0.005），PR（OR=5.686，95% CI：1.677-19.282，P = 0.005），Ki-67（OR=3.966，95% CI：1.133-13.875，P = 0.031）were the independent risk factors for synchronous BC and TC. Eighty patients were subject to follow-up，6 patients died，27 survived，and 7 were lost to follow-up in BC and TC group A；2 patients died，29 survived，and 9 were lost to follow-up in BC group A. Cox regression analysis revealed no statistical significance in both groups. Conclusions Age at first diagnosis，menstrual status，PR，and Ki-67 are the risk factors for synchronous BC and TC. Tumor diameter is an independent prognostic factor for synchronous BC and TC. Age at first diagnosis and tumor diameter are the independent prognostic factors for BC alone.

Abstract

The All of Us Research Program seeks to engage at least one million diverse participants to advance precision medicine and improve human health. We describe here the cloud-based Researcher Workbench that uses a data passport model to democratize access to analytical tools and participant information including survey, physical measurement, and electronic health record (EHR) data. We also present validation study findings for several common complex diseases to demonstrate use of this novel platform in 315,000 participants, 78% of whom are from groups historically underrepresented in biomedical research, including 49% self-reporting non-White races. Replication findings include medication usage pattern differences by race in depression and type 2 diabetes, validation of known cancer associations with smoking, and calculation of cardiovascular risk scores by reported race effects. The cloud-based Researcher Workbench represents an important advance in enabling secure access for a broad range of researchers to this large resource and analytical tools.
