In gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), ∼100–1000 s after the prompt emission, afterglow observations have consistently shown X-ray excesses detected in the form of flares (in long GRBs) or extended emission (in short GRBs). These observations are interpreted as emissions from jets launched by late central engine activity. However, the characteristics of these late-time jets, particularly the dissipation radius (r diss), Lorentz factor (Γ), and cosmic-ray loading factor (ξ p ), remain unknown despite their importance. Here, in order to understand the properties of the late-time jets with future multimessenger observations, we estimate the detectability of neutrinos associated with late-time emissions for a wide range of r diss and Γ, assuming ξ p = 10. We take into account external seed photons from the cocoon around the jets, which can enhance the neutrino production through photohadronic interaction in the jet dissipation region. Our results are still consistent with the upper limit obtained by IceCube. Our calculations indicate a promising prospect for neutrino detection with IceCube-Gen2 through the stacking of ∼1000–2000 events, for a wide range of r diss and Γ. We found that setting an optimal energy threshold of 10 TeV can significantly reduce noise without negatively affecting neutrino detection. AT 2022cmc is a recently documented tidal disruption event that exhibits a luminous jet, accompanied by fast-declining X-ray and long-lasting radio and millimeter emission. Motivated by the distinct spectral and temporal signatures between the X-ray and radio observations, we propose a multizone model involving relativistic jets with different Lorentz factors. We systematically study the evolution of faster and slower jets in an external density profile, considering the continuous energy injection rate associated with time-dependent accretion rates before and after the mass fallback time. We investigate time-dependent multiwavelength emission from both the forward shock (FS) and reverse shock (RS) regions of the fast and slow jets, in a self-consistent manner. Our analysis demonstrates that the energy injection rate can significantly impact the jet evolution and subsequently influence the lightcurves. We find that the X-ray spectra and lightcurves could be described by electron synchrotron emission from the RS of the faster jet, in which the late-time X-ray upper limits, extending to 400 days after the disruption, could be interpreted as a jet break. Meanwhile, the radio observations can be interpreted as a result of synchrotron emission from the FS region of the slower jet. The tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2022cmc represents the fourth known example of a relativistic jet produced by the tidal disruption of a stray star, providing a unique probe of the formation and evolution of relativistic jets in otherwise dormant supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Here we present deep, late-time Chandra observations of AT2022cmc extending to t obs ≈ 400 days after disruption. Our observations reveal a sudden decrease in the X-ray brightness by a factor of ≳14 over a factor of ≈2.3 in time, and a deviation from the earlier power-law decline with a steepening α ≳ 3.2 (F X ∝ t − α ), steeper than expected for a jet break, and pointing to the cessation of jet activity at t obs ≈ 215 days. Such a transition has been observed in two previous TDEs (Swift J1644+57 and Swift J2058+05). From the X-ray luminosity and the timescale of jet shut-off, we parameterize the mass of the SMBH in terms of unknown jet efficiency and accreted mass fraction parameters. Motivated by the disk–jet connection in active galactic nuclei, we favor black hole masses ≲105 M ⊙ (where the jet and disk luminosities are comparable), and disfavor larger black holes (in which extremely powerful jets are required to outshine their accretion disks). We additionally estimate a total accreted mass of ≈0.1 M ⊙. Applying the same formalism to Swift J1644+57 and Swift J2058+05, we favor comparable black hole masses for these TDEs of ≲ a few × 105 M ⊙, and suggest that jetted TDEs may preferentially form from lower-mass black holes when compared to nonrelativistic events, owing to generally lower jet and higher disk efficiencies at higher black hole masses. The origin of X-ray emission from the resolved kiloparsec-scale jets and hotspots of many active galactic nuclei remains uncertain, particularly where the X-ray emission is separate from the radio-optical synchrotron component. Possible explanations include synchrotron emission from a second electron population and external Compton or synchrotron self-Compton processes—alternatives which imply very different physical conditions within the jet. Until recently, X-ray studies of resolved jets and hotspots have been restricted to below ∼10 keV, often showing a hard spectral index indicating a spectral peak beyond this energy range. Here we present NuSTAR observations of the nearby powerful radio galaxy Pictor A, in which we clearly detect the western hotspot at approximately 4′ from the host galaxy, the most significant detection of hotspot emission above 10 keV to date. The NuSTAR spectrum is best fit by a single power law of index Γ = 2.03 ± 0.04; an exponential cutoff gives a 1 σ lower limit on the cutoff energy of 40.7 keV. We confirm previous findings of variations in the soft X-ray flux detected by Chandra over the 2000 to 2015 period, at a significance of 6.5 σ. This rises to >8 σ in the common 3–8 keV band using the combined 22 yr span of Chandra and NuSTAR observations. The variability of the western Pictor A hotspot strongly confirms the previously argued synchrotron nature of the X-ray emission for the hotspot, while the lower bound to the spectral cutoff energy implies electron energies in the hotspot reach up to at least a few TeV. The afterglows of gamma-ray bursts are believed to have originated from a relativistic jet, which is driven by the merger of compact binary objects or the core collapse of massive stars. Some of their jets may consist of two components: a faster (but narrower) jet and a slower (but wider) jet. The light curves produced by the interaction between the two-component jet and the surrounding medium typically exhibit a chromatic break in multiple bands. For GRB 191221B, the optical light curve of the afterglow exhibits a plateau from 33 to 143 s, followed by a steeper decay that is consistent with the characteristics of reverse shock from an arbitrarily magnetized ejecta. The flattening at ∼10 ks exhibits chromaticity relative to the X-ray afterglow. We propose that the two-component jet scenario can explain this observational result: For the X-ray afterglow, the narrow jet forward shock is dominated until ∼10 ks, and then both the narrow and wide components contribute comparable flux from the forward shock. For the optical afterglow, the first 2 ks is dominated by the narrow jet reverse shock emission (the plateau from 33 to 143 s is due to the jet being magnetized). Between 2 and 10 ks, the forward shock of the narrow jet dominates the optical afterglow, then transitions to wide component forward shock dominance, causing a chromatic plateau. We present a comprehensive investigation of mid-infrared (MIR) flux variability at 3.4 μm (W1 band) for a large sample of 3816 blazars, using Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data through December 2022. The sample consists of 1740 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), 1281 BL Lac objects (BL Lacs), and 795 blazars of uncertain type (BCUs). Considering Fermi Large Area Telescope detection, we classify 2331 as Fermi blazars and 1485 as non-Fermi blazars. Additionally, based on synchrotron peak frequency, the sample includes 2264 low-synchrotron peaked (LSP), 512 intermediate-synchrotron peaked (ISP), and 655 high-synchrotron peaked (HSP) sources. We conduct a comparative analysis of short- and long-term intrinsic variability amplitude ( σ m ), duty cycle (DC), and ensemble structure function (ESF) across blazar subclasses. The median short-term σ m values were 0. 181 − 0.106 + 0.153 , 0. 104 − 0.054 + 0.101 , 0. 135 − 0.076 + 0.154 , 0. 173 − 0.097 + 0.158 , 0. 177 − 0.100 + 0.156 , 0. 096 − 0.050 + 0.109 , and 0. 106 − 0.058 + 0.100 mag for FSRQs, BL Lacs, Fermi blazars, non-Fermi blazars, LSPs, ISPs, and HSPs, respectively. The median DC values were 71. 03 − 22.48 + 14.17 , 64. 02 − 22.86 + 16.97 , 68. 96 − 25.52 + 15.66 , 69. 40 − 22.17 + 14.42 , 71. 24 − 21.36 + 14.25 , 63. 03 − 33.19 + 16.93 , and 64. 63 − 24.26 + 15.88 percent for the same subclasses. The median long-term σ m values were 0. 137 − 0.105 + 0.408 , 0. 171 − 0.132 + 0.206 , 0. 282 − 0.184 + 0.332 , 0. 071 − 0.062 + 0.143 , 0. 218 − 0.174 + 0.386 , 0. 173 − 0.132 + 0.208 , and 0. 101 − 0.077 + 0.161 mag for the same subclasses, respectively. Our results reveal significant differences in 3.4 μ m flux variability among these subclasses. FSRQs (LSPs) exhibit larger σ m and DC values compared to BL Lacs (ISPs and HSPs). Fermi blazars display higher long-term σ m but lower short-term σ m relative to non-Fermi blazars, while DC distributions between the two groups are similar. ESF analysis further confirms the greater variability of FSRQs, LSPs, and Fermi blazars across a wide range of time scales compared to BL Lacs, ISPs/HSPs, and non-Fermi blazars. These findings highlight a close correlation between MIR variability and blazar properties, providing valuable insights into the underlying physical mechanisms responsible for their emission. We perform the numerical simulations of axisymmetric, relativistic, optically thin jets under the influence of the radiation field of an accretion disk. We show that starting from a very low injection velocity at the base, jets can be accelerated to relativistic terminal speeds when traveling through the radiation field. The jet gains momentum through the interaction with the radiation field. We use a relativistic equation of state for multispecies plasma, which self-consistently calculates the adiabatic index for the jet material. All the jet solutions obtained are transonic in nature. In addition to the acceleration of the jet to relativistic speeds, our results show that the radiation field also acts as a collimating agent. The jets remain well collimated under the effect of radiation pressure. We also show that if the jet starts with a rotational velocity, the radiation field will reduce the angular momentum of the jet beam. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mature radio galaxies such as M87 belong to a specific subclass of active galaxies (AGN) whose evolution in time endows them with five distinguishing characteristics, including (1) low excitation emission, (2) low star formation rates, (3) high bulge stellar-velocity dispersion, (4) bright stellar nuclei, and (5) weak or nonexistent merger signatures. We show how to understand these seemingly disparate characteristics as originating from the time evolution of powerful radio quasars and describe a new model prediction that tilted accretion disks in AGN are expected to occur in bright quasars but not in other subclasses of AGN. X-ray and MeV polarization can be powerful diagnostics for leptonic and hadronic blazar models. Previous predictions are mostly based on a one-zone framework. However, recent IXPE observations of Mrk 421 and 501 strongly favor a multizone framework. Thus, the leptonic and hadronic polarization predictions need to be revisited. Here we identify two generic radiation transfer effects, namely, double depolarization and energy stratification, that can have an impact on the leptonic and hadronic polarization. We show how they are generalized from previously known multizone effects of the primary electron synchrotron radiation. Under our generic multizone model, the leptonic polarization degree is expected to be much lower than the one-zone prediction, unlikely detectable in most cases. The hadronic polarization degree can reach a value as high as the primary electron synchrotron polarization during simultaneous multiwavelength flares, consistent with the one-zone prediction. Therefore, IXPE and future X-ray and MeV polarimeters such as eXTP, COSI, and AMEGO-X, have good chances to detect hadronic polarization during flares. However, the hadronic polarization cannot be well constrained during the quiescent state. Nonetheless, if some blazar jets possess relatively stable large-scale magnetic structures, as suggested by radio observations, a nontrivial polarization degree may show up for the hadronic model after a very long exposure time (≳1 yr). X-ray polarimetry has been suggested as a prominent tool for investigating the geometrical and physical properties of the emissions from active galactic nuclei (AGN). The successful launch of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) on 9 December 2021 has expanded the previously restricted scope of polarimetry into the X-ray domain, enabling X-ray polarimetric studies of AGN. Over a span of two years, IXPE has observed various AGN populations, including blazars and radio-quiet AGN. In this paper, we summarize the remarkable discoveries achieved thanks to the opening of the new window of X-ray polarimetry of AGN through IXPE observations. We will delve into two primary areas of interest: first, the magnetic field geometry and particle acceleration mechanisms in the jets of radio-loud AGN, such as blazars, where the relativistic acceleration process dominates the spectral energy distribution; and second, the geometry of the hot corona in radio-quiet AGN. Thus far, the IXPE results from blazars favor the energy-stratified shock acceleration model, and they provide evidence of helical magnetic fields inside the jet. Concerning the corona geometry, the IXPE results are consistent with a disk-originated slab-like or wedge-like shape, as could result from Comptonization around the accretion disk. A mechanism for the ejection of relativistic jets from slim disks is studied. Since radiation pressure is dominant in the slim disk, radiative energy flows along the pressure gradient in the vertical direction. The divergence of the radiative flux tells us that the flow of radiative energy from a bottom layer near the equatorial plane is absorbed by another layer above the boundary surface. The absorbed energy accumulates in the upper layer as the matter advances inward, and calculations show that the specific energy of the flow in the upper layer can be as large as ∼ c 2 near the black hole when the accretion rate through the upper layer is relatively low. Since the specific energy ∼ c 2 is much larger than the gravitational energy, the height of the upper layer could significantly increase then. Hence, the innermost part of the upper layer after almost all the angular momentum has been removed could have a much greater height than the size of the black hole, and the flow could collide with itself around the central axis of the disk, bouncing back from the axis while simultaneously expanding along it. The flow is expected to go outward along the central axis and to become supersonic due to the change in its cross section, finally producing relativistic jets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose that gamma-ray burst (GRB) pulses are produced when highly relativistic jets sweep across an observer's line of sight. We hypothesize that axisymmetric jet profiles, coupled with special relativistic effects, produce the time-reversed properties of GRB pulses. Curvature resulting from rapid jet expansion is responsible for much of the observed pulse asymmetry and hard-to-soft evolution. The relative obliqueness with which the jet crosses the line of sight explains the known GRB pulse morphological types. We explore two scenarios: one in which a rigid/semirigid jet moves laterally and another in which a ballistic jet sprays material from a laterally moving nozzle. We present the results of a comparison between different methods to estimate the power of relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN). We selected a sample of 32 objects (21 flat-spectrum radio quasars, 7 BL Lacertae objects, 2 misaligned AGN, and 2 changing-look AGN) from the very large baseline array (VLBA) observations at 43 GHz of the Boston University blazar program. We then calculated the total, radiative, and kinetic jet power from both radio and high-energy gamma-ray observations, and compared the values. We found an excellent agreement between the radiative power calculated by using the Blandford and Königl model with 37 or 43 GHz data and the values derived from the high-energy γ -ray luminosity. The agreement is still acceptable if 15 GHz data are used, although with a larger dispersion, but it improves if we use a constant fraction of the γ -ray luminosity. We found a good agreement also for the kinetic power calculated with the Blandford and Königl model with 15 GHz data and the value from the extended radio emission. Kinetic simulations of relativistic turbulence have significantly advanced our understanding of turbulent particle acceleration. Recent progress has highlighted the need for an updated acceleration theory that can account for particle acceleration within the plasma's coherent structures. Here, we investigate how intermittency modeling connects statistical fluctuations in turbulence to regions of high-energy dissipation. This connection is established by employing a generalized She–Leveque model to characterize the exponents ζ p for the structure functions S p ∝ l ζ p . The fitting of the scaling exponents provides us with a measure of the codimension of the dissipative structures, for which we subsequently determine the filling fraction. We perform our analysis for a range of magnetizations σ and relative fluctuation amplitudes δ B 0/ B 0. We find that increasing values of σ and δ B 0/ B 0 allow the turbulent cascade to break sheetlike structures into smaller regions of dissipation that resemble chains of flux ropes. However, as their dissipation measure increases, the dissipative regions become less volume filling. With this work, we aim to inform future turbulent acceleration theories that incorporate particle energization from interactions with coherent structures within relativistic turbulence. We point out the dominant importance of plasma injection effects of relativistic winds from pulsars and black holes. We demonstrate that outside the light cylinder, the magnetically dominated outflows sliding along the helical magnetic field move nearly radially with very large Lorentz factors, γ 0 ≫ 1, imprinted into the flow during pair production within the gaps. Only at larger distances, r ≥ γ 0(c /Ω), does MHD acceleration Γ ∝ r take over. As a result, Blandford–Znajek (BZ)-driven outflows produce spine-brightened images. The best-resolved case of the jet in M87 shows both edge-brightened features, as well as weaker spine-brightened features. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a peculiar subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Among them, TXS 1206+549 belongs to a small group of radio-loud and γ -ray-emitting NLS1 galaxies. We focus on the radio properties of this galaxy by analysing archival, high-resolution, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging observations taken at 8 GHz frequency in six epochs between 1994 and 2018. Using the milliarcsecond-scale radio structure, we can resolve a core and a jet component whose angular separation increases by (0.055 ± 0.006) mas yr−1. This corresponds to an apparent superluminal jet component motion of (3.5 ± 0.4) c . From the core brightness temperature and the jet component proper motion, we determine the characteristic Doppler-boosting factor, the bulk Lorentz factor, and the jet viewing angle. We find no compelling evidence for a very closely aligned blazar-type jet. The parameters for TXS 1206+549 resemble those of radio-loud quasar jets with a moderate Lorentz factor ( Γ ≈ 4 ) and ϑ ≈ 24 ∘ inclination to the line of sight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a comprehensive study of 29 short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) observed ≈0.8−60 days postburst using Chandra and XMM-Newton. We provide the inferred distributions of the SGRB jet opening angles and true event rates to compare against neutron star merger rates. We perform a uniform analysis and modeling of their afterglows, obtaining 10 opening angle measurements and 19 lower limits. We report on two new opening angle measurements (SGRBs 050724A and 200411A) and eight updated values, obtaining a median value of 〈 θ j〉 ≈ 6.°1 [−3.°2, +9.°3] (68% confidence on the full distribution) from jet measurements alone. For the remaining events, we infer θ j ≳ 0.°5–26°. We uncover a population of SGRBs with wider jets of θ j ≳ 10° (including two measurements of θ j ≳ 15°), representing ∼28% of our sample. Coupled with multiwavelength afterglow information, we derive a total true energy of 〈 E true,tot〉 ≈ 1049–1050 erg, which is consistent with magnetohydrodynamic jet launching mechanisms. Furthermore, we determine a range for the beaming-corrected event rate of R true ≈ 360 − 1800 Gpc−3 yr−1, set by the inclusion of a population of wide jets on the low end, and the jet measurements alone on the high end. From a comparison with the latest merger rates, our results are consistent with the majority of SGRBs originating from binary neutron star mergers. However, our inferred rates are well above the latest neutron star–black hole merger rates, consistent with at most a small fraction of SGRBs originating from such mergers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) radiate ≳10–100 times more energy than ordinary stellar explosions, implicating a novel power source behind these enigmatic events. One frequently discussed source, particularly for hydrogen-poor (Type I) SLSNe, is a central engine such as a millisecond magnetar or accreting black hole. Both black hole and magnetar engines are expected to channel a fraction of their luminosity into a collimated relativistic jet. Using 3D relativistic hydrodynamical simulations, we explore the interaction of a relativistic jet, endowed with a luminosity L _j ≈ 10 ^45.5 erg s ^−1 and duration t _eng ≈ 10 days compatible with those needed to power SLSNe, launched into the envelope of the exploding star. The jet successfully breaks through the expanding ejecta, and its shocked cocoon powers ultraviolet/optical emission lasting several days after the explosion and reaching a peak luminosity ≳10 ^44 erg s ^−1 , corresponding to a sizable fraction of L _j . This high radiative efficiency is the result of the modest adiabatic losses the cocoon experiences owing to the low optical depths of the enlarged ejecta at these late times, e.g., compared to the more compact stars in gamma-ray bursts. The luminosity and temperature of the cocoon emission match those of the “bumps” in SLSN light curves observed weeks prior to the optical maximum in many SLSNe. Confirmation of jet breakout signatures by future observations (e.g., days-long to weeks-long internal X-ray emission from the jet for on-axis observers, spectroscopy confirming large photosphere velocities v / c ≳ 0.1, or detection of a radio afterglow) would offer strong evidence for central engines powering SLSNe.

The brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A shows evidence for a narrow evolving MeV emission line. Here, we show that this line is due to pair annihilation in the prompt emission region and that its temporal evolution is naturally explained as a high-latitude emission (emission from higher angles from the line of sight) after prompt emission is over. We consider both the high and low optical depth for pair production regimes and find acceptable solutions, with the gamma-ray burst (GRB) Lorentz factor Γ ≈ 600 and the emission radius r ≳ 10 ^16.5 cm. We discuss the conditions for the appearance of such a line and show that a unique combination of high luminosity and Lorentz factor that is in a fairly narrow range are required for the line detection. This explains why such an annihilation line is rarely observed in GRBs.

We report the first observation of the nearby giant radio galaxy NGC 315 using a global very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) array consisting of 22 radio antennas located across five continents, including high-sensitivity stations, at 22 GHz. Utilizing the extensive u v -coverage provided by the array, coupled with the application of a recently developed superresolution imaging technique based on the regularized maximum-likelihood method, we were able to transversely resolve the NGC 315 jet at parsec scales for the first time. Previously known for its central ridge-brightened morphology at similar scales in former VLBI studies, the jet now clearly exhibits a limb-brightened structure. This finding suggests an inherent limb brightening that was not observable before due to limited angular resolution. Considering that the jet is viewed at an angle of ∼50°, the observed limb brightening is challenging to reconcile with the magnetohydrodynamic models and simulations, which predict that the Doppler-boosted jet edges should dominate over the nonboosted central layer. The conventional jet model that proposes a fast spine and a slow sheath with uniform transverse emissivity may pertain to our observations. However, in this model, the relativistic spine would need to travel at speeds of Γ ≳ 6.0–12.9 along the deprojected jet distance of (2.3–10.8) × 10 ^3 gravitational radii from the black hole. We propose an alternative scenario that suggests higher emissivity at the jet boundary layer, resulting from more efficient particle acceleration or mass loading onto the jet edges, and consider prospects for future observations with even higher angular resolution.

Ultrarelativistic jets are believed to play an important role in producing prompt emission and afterglow of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), but the nature of the jet is poorly known owing to the lack of decisive features observed in the prompt emission. The discovery of an emission line evolving from about 37 to 6 MeV in the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A provides an unprecedented opportunity to probe GRB jet physics. The time evolution of the central energy of the line with power-law index −1 is naturally explained by the high-latitude curvature effect. Under the assumption that the line emission is generated in the prompt emission by e ^± pair production, cooling, and annihilation in the jet, we can strictly constrain jet physics with observed line emission properties. We find that the radius of the emission region is r ≳ 10 ^16 cm. The narrow line width of ∼10% requires that the line emission occurs within 10% of the dynamical time, which further implies short timescales of pair cooling to the nonrelativistic state and pair annihilation, as well as a slightly clumpy emission region. If the jet’s Lorentz factor is Γ ≳ 400, the fast cooling requirement needs an energy density of magnetic field in the jet much larger than that of prompt gamma rays, i.e., a magnetically dominated jet. The temporal behavior of line flux suggests some angle dependence of line emission. We also discuss the difficulties of other scenarios for the observed emission line.

The recent gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 211211A provides the earliest (∼5 hr) data of a kilonova (KN) event, displaying bright (∼10 ^42 erg s ^−1 ) and blue early emission. Previously, this KN was explained using simplistic multicomponent fitting methods. Here, in order to understand the physical origin of the KN emission in GRB 211211A, we employ an analytic multizone model for r -process-powered KNe. We find that r -process-powered KN models alone cannot explain the fast temporal evolution and the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the observed emission. Specifically, (i) r -process models require high ejecta mass to match early luminosity, which overpredicts late-time emission, while (ii) red KN models that reproduce late emission underpredict early luminosity. We propose an alternative scenario involving early contributions from the GRB central engine via a late low-power jet, consistent with plateau emission in short GRBs and GeV emission detected by Fermi-LAT at ∼10 ^4 s after GRB 211211A. Such late central engine activity, with an energy budget of ∼a few percent of that of the prompt jet, combined with a single red KN ejecta component, can naturally explain the light curve and SED of the observed emission, with the late-jet–ejecta interaction reproducing the early blue emission and r -process heating reproducing the late red emission. This supports claims that late low-power engine activity after prompt emission may be common. We encourage early follow-up observations of future nearby GRBs and compact binary merger events to reveal more about the central engine of GRBs and r -process events.

Multiwavelength polarimetry and radio observations of Swift J1727.8–1613 at the beginning of its recent 2023 outburst suggested the presence of a bright compact jet aligned in the north–south direction, which could not be confirmed without high-angular-resolution images. Using the Very Long Baseline Array and the Long Baseline Array, we imaged Swift J1727.8–1613 during the hard/hard-intermediate state, revealing a bright core and a large, two-sided, asymmetrical, resolved jet. The jet extends in the north–south direction, at a position angle of −0.60° ± 0.07° east of north. At 8.4 GHz, the entire resolved jet structure is $\sim 110(d/2.7\,\mathrm{kpc})/\sin i$ au long, with the southern approaching jet extending $\sim 80(d/2.7\,\mathrm{kpc})/\sin i$ au from the core, where d is the distance to the source and i is the inclination of the jet axis to the line of sight. These images reveal the most resolved continuous X-ray binary jet, and possibly the most physically extended continuous X-ray binary jet ever observed. Based on the brightness ratio of the approaching and receding jets, we put a lower limit on the intrinsic jet speed of β ≥ 0.27 and an upper limit on the jet inclination of i ≤ 74°. In our first observation we also detected a rapidly fading discrete jet knot 66.89 ± 0.04 mas south of the core, with a proper motion of 0.66 ± 0.05 mas hr ^−1 , which we interpret as the result of a downstream internal shock or a jet–interstellar medium interaction, as opposed to a transient relativistic jet launched at the beginning of the outburst.

Mrk 501 is a prototypical high-synchrotron-peaked blazar and serves as one of the primary targets for the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). In this study, we report X-ray polarization measurements of Mrk 501 based on six IXPE observations. The detection of X-ray polarization at a confidence level exceeding 99% is achieved in four out of the six observations conducted across the entire energy range (2–8 keV) of IXPE. The maximum polarization degree (Π _X ) is measured to be 15.8% ± 2.8%, accompanied by a polarization angle ( ψ _X ) of 98.°0 ± 5.°1 at a confidence level of 5.6 σ . During the remaining two observations, only an upper limit of Π _X < 12% could be derived at the 99% confidence level. No temporal variability in polarization is observed throughout all six IXPE observations for Mrk 501. A discernible trend of energy-dependent variation in the polarization degree is detected in optical spectropolarimetry; however, no analogous indication is observed in Π _X . The chromatic behavior of Π and the consistent values of ψ across different frequencies from X-ray to radio bands, along with the agreement between ψ and jet position angle, strongly support the interpretation of the energy-stratified model with shock-accelerated particles in the jet of Mrk 501. Additionally, the possibility of the presence of a global helical magnetic field in the jet of Mrk 501 is discussed.

It has been suggested that relativistic jets might have been commonly formed in tidal disruption events (TDEs), but those with relatively weak power could be choked by the surrounding envelope. The discovery of high-energy neutrinos possibly associated with some normal TDEs may support this picture in the hypothesis that the neutrinos are produced by choked jets. Recently, it was noted that disrupted stars generally have misaligned orbits with respect to the supermassive black hole spin axis, and highly misaligned precessing jets are more likely to be choked. Here we revisit the jet breakout condition for misaligned precessing jets by considering that the jet could be collimated by the cocoon pressure while propagating in the disk wind envelope. The jet head opening angle decreases as the jet propagates in the envelope, but the minimum power of a successful jet remains unchanged in terms of the physical jet power. We further calculate the neutrino flux from choked precessing jets, assuming that the cocoon energy does not exceed the kinetic energy of the disk wind. We find that neutrino flux from highly misaligned choked jets is sufficient to explain the neutrinos from AT2019aalc, while it is marginal to explain the neutrinos from AT2019dsg and AT2019fdr. The latter could be produced by weakly misaligned choked jets, since the duty cycle that the jet sweeps across increases as the misaligned angle decreases. We also show that the population of choked TDE jets could contribute to ∼10% of the observed diffuse neutrino flux measured by IceCube.

Fast X-ray Transients (FXTs) are extragalactic bursts of soft X-rays first identified ≳10 yr ago. Since then, nearly 40 events have been discovered, although almost all of these have been recovered from archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data. To date, optical sky surveys and follow-up searches have not revealed any multiwavelength counterparts. The Einstein Probe, launched in 2024 January, has started surveying the sky in the soft X-ray regime (0.5–4 keV) and will rapidly increase the sample of FXTs discovered in real time. Here we report the first discovery of both an optical and radio counterpart to a distant FXT, the fourth source publicly released by the Einstein Probe. We discovered a fast-fading optical transient within the 3′ localization radius of EP 240315a with the all-sky optical survey ATLAS, and our follow-up Gemini spectrum provides a redshift, z = 4.859 ± 0.002. Furthermore, we uncovered a radio counterpart in the S band (3.0 GHz) with the MeerKAT radio interferometer. The optical (rest-frame UV) and radio luminosities indicate that the FXT most likely originates from either a long gamma-ray burst or a relativistic tidal disruption event. This may be a fortuitous early mission detection by the Einstein Probe or may signpost a mode of discovery for high-redshift, high-energy transients through soft X-ray surveys, combined with locating multiwavelength counterparts.

Relativistic jets from accreting supermassive black holes at cosmological distances can be powerful emitters of γ -rays. However, the precise mechanisms and locations responsible for the dissipation of energy within these jets, leading to observable γ -ray radiation, remain elusive. We detect evidence for an intrinsic absorption feature in the γ -ray spectrum at energies exceeding 10 GeV, presumably due to the photon–photon pair production of γ -rays with low-ionization lines at the outer edge of broad-line region (BLR), during the high-flux state of the flat-spectrum radio quasar PKS 1424−418. The feature can be discriminated from the turnover at higher energies resulting from γ -ray absorption in the extragalactic background light. It is absent in the low-flux states, supporting the interpretation that powerful dissipation events within or at the edge of the BLR evolve into fainter γ -ray emitting zones outside the BLR, possibly associated with the moving very long baseline interferometry radio knots. The inferred location of the γ -ray emission zone is consistent with the observed variability timescale of the brightest flare, provided that the flare is attributed to external Compton scattering with BLR photons.

Accreting black hole binaries change their properties during evolution, passing through two main luminous states, dominated by either hard or soft X-rays. In the hard state, steady compact jets emitting multiwavelength radiation are present. Those jets are usually observed in radio, and when resolved, their extent is ≲10 ^15 cm. Then, during hard-to-soft transitions, powerful ejecta in the form of blobs appear. They are observed up to distances of ∼10 ^18 cm, which are ≳1000 times larger than the extent of hard-state jets. On the other hand, estimates of the accretion rates during most luminous hard states and the hard-to-soft transitions are very similar, implying that maximum achievable powers of both types of jets are similar and cannot cause a huge difference in their propagation. Instead, we explain the difference in the propagation length by postulating that the ejecta consist of electron-ion plasmas, whereas the hard-state jets consist mostly of electron–positron pairs. The inertia of the ejecta are then much higher than those of compact jets, and the former are not readily stopped by ambient media. A related result is that the accretion flow during the hard state is of standard and normal evolution, while it is a magnetically arrested disk during transient ejections. The pairs in hard-state jets can be produced by collisions of photons of the hard spectrum emitted by hot accretion flows within the jet base. On the other hand, the X-ray spectra during the state transitions are relatively soft, and the same process produces much fewer pairs.

One of the difficulties in nailing down the physical mechanism of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) comes from the fact that there has been no clear observational evidence on how far from the central engine the prompt gamma rays of GRBs are emitted. Here we present a simple study addressing this question by making use of the “high-latitude emission” (HLE). We show that our detailed numerical modeling exhibits a clear signature of HLE in the decaying phase of “broad pulses” of GRBs. We show that the HLE can emerge as a prominent spectral break in F _ν spectra and dominate the peak of ν F _ν spectra even while the “line-of-sight emission” (LoSE) is still ongoing. This finding provides a new view of HLE emergence since it has been believed so far that the HLE can show up and dominate the spectra only after the LoSE is turned off. We remark, however, that this “HLE break” can be hidden in some broad pulses, depending on the proximity between the peak energies of the LoSE and the HLE. Therefore, this new picture of HLE emergence explains both the detection and nondetection of HLE signature in observations of broad pulses. Also, we present three examples of Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor GRBs with broad pulses that exhibit the HLE signature. We show that their gamma-ray-emitting region should be located at ∼10 ^16 cm from the central engine, which places a constraint on the GRB models.

GRB 221009A produced the highest flux of gigaelectronvolt–teraelectronvolt (GeV–TeV) photons ever observed, allowing the construction of a detailed TeV light curve. We focus on explaining the noticeable dip in the light curve around 2–5 s after the onset of TeV emission. We propose that megaelectronvolt (MeV) photons from the prompt emission annihilate with TeV photons from the afterglow, producing an optical depth that obscures the TeV emission during this period. We develop a two-zone model accounting for the angles of MeV photons that can successfully reproduce the time delay between MeV and TeV photons, the peak optical depth over 3, and the rapid decline in optical depth. Our model supports MeV–TeV annihilation as the cause of the dip and provides reasonable constraints on the emission region parameters.

We report observations of the optical counterpart of the long gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 230812B and its associated supernova (SN) SN 2023pel. The proximity ( z = 0.36) and high energy ( E _γ _,iso ∼ 10 ^53 erg) make it an important event to study as a probe of the connection between massive star core collapse and relativistic jet formation. With a phenomenological power-law model for the optical afterglow, we find a late-time flattening consistent with the presence of an associated SN. SN 2023pel has an absolute peak r -band magnitude of M _r = −19.46 ± 0.18 mag (about as bright as SN 1998bw) and evolves on quicker timescales. Using a radioactive heating model, we derive a nickel mass powering the SN of M _Ni = 0.38 ± 0.01 M _⊙ and a peak bolometric luminosity of L _bol ∼ 1.3 × 10 ^43 erg s ^−1 . We confirm SN 2023pel’s classification as a broad-line Type Ic SN with a spectrum taken 15.5 days after its peak in the r band and derive a photospheric expansion velocity of v _ph = 11,300 ± 1600 km s ^−1 at that phase. Extrapolating this velocity to the time of maximum light, we derive the ejecta mass M _ej = 1.0 ± 0.6 M _⊙ and kinetic energy ${E}_{\mathrm{KE}}={1.3}_{-1.2}^{+3.3}\times {10}^{51}\,\mathrm{erg}$ . We find that GRB 230812B/SN 2023pel has SN properties that are mostly consistent with the overall GRB-SN population. The lack of correlations found in the GRB-SN population between SN brightness and E _γ _,iso for their associated GRBs across a broad range of 7 orders of magnitude provides further evidence that the central engine powering the relativistic ejecta is not coupled to the SN powering mechanism in GRB-SN systems.

Neutron stars and black holes in X-ray binaries are observed to host strong collimated jets in the hard spectral state. Numerical simulations can act as a valuable tool in understanding the mechanisms behind jet formation and its properties. Although there have been significant efforts in understanding black hole jets from general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations in recent years, neutron star jets still remain poorly explored. We present the results from three-dimensional GRMHD simulations of accreting neutron stars with oblique magnetospheres for the very first time. The jets in our simulations are produced due to the anchored magnetic field of the rotating star in analogy with the Blandford–Znajek process. We find that for accreting stars, the star–disk magnetic field interaction plays a significant role, and as a result, the jet power becomes directly proportional to ${{{\rm{\Phi }}}^{2}}_{\mathrm{jet}}$ , where Φ _jet is the open flux in the jet. The jet power decreases with increasing stellar magnetic inclination, and finally, for an orthogonal magnetosphere, it reduces by a factor of ≃2.95 compared to the aligned case. We also find that in the strong propeller regime, with a highly oblique magnetosphere, the disk-induced collimation of the open stellar flux preserves parts of the striped wind, resulting in a striped jet.

The latest entry in the jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN) family is the Fanaroff–Riley type 0 (FR0) radio galaxies. They share several observational characteristics, e.g., nuclear emission and host galaxy morphology, with FR I sources; however, they lack extended, kiloparsec-scale radio structures, which are the defining features of canonical FR I and II sources. Here we report the identification of seven γ -ray-emitting AGN as FR0 radio sources by utilizing the high-quality observations delivered by ongoing multiwavelength wide-field sky surveys, e.g., Very Large Array Sky Survey. The broadband observational properties of these objects are found to be similar to their γ -ray undetected counterparts. In the γ -ray band, FR0 radio galaxies exhibit spectral features similar to more common FR I and II radio galaxies, indicating a common γ -ray production mechanism and the presence of misaligned jets. Although the parsec-scale radio structure of FR0s generally exhibits a wide range, with about half having emission on opposite sides of the core, the γ -ray-detected FR0s tend to have dominant cores with core-jet structures. We conclude that dedicated, high-resolution observations are needed to unravel the origin of relativistic jets in this enigmatic class of faint yet numerous population of compact radio sources. Short-duration gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) are commonly attributed to the mergers of double neutron stars (NSs) or the mergers of a neutron star with a black hole (BH). While the former scenario was confirmed by the event GW170817, the latter remains elusive. Here, we consider the latter scenario in which an NS is tidally disrupted by a fast-spinning low-mass BH and the accretion onto the BH launches a relativistic jet and hence produces an sGRB. The merging binary's orbit is likely misaligned with the BH's spin. Hence, the Lense–Thirring precession around the BH may cause a hyperaccreting thick disk to precess in a solid-body manner. We propose that a jet, initially aligned with the BH spin, is deflected and collimated by the wind from the disk, therefore being forced to precess along with the disk. This would result in a quasiperiodic oscillation or modulation in the gamma-ray light curve of the sGRB, with a quasi-period of ∼0.01–0.1 s. The appearance of the modulation may be delayed respective to the triggering of the light curve. This feature, unique to the BH–NS merger, may have already revealed itself in a few observed sGRBs (such as GRB 130310A), and it carries the spin–orbit orientation information of the merging system. Identification of this feature would be a new approach to reveal spin–orbit misaligned merging BH–NS systems, which are likely missed by the current gravitational-wave searching strategy that is principally targeting aligned systems. We describe the process to design, architect, and implement a transformative enhancement of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). This program—the next-generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT)—will form a networked global array of radio dishes capable of making high-fidelity real-time movies of supermassive black holes (SMBH) and their emanating jets. This builds upon the EHT principally by deploying additional modest-diameter dishes to optimized geographic locations to enhance the current global mm/submm wavelength Very Long Baseline Interferometric (VLBI) array, which has, to date, utilized mostly pre-existing radio telescopes. The ngEHT program further focuses on observing at three frequencies simultaneously for increased sensitivity and Fourier spatial frequency coverage. Here, the concept, science goals, design considerations, station siting, and instrument prototyping are discussed, and a preliminary reference array to be implemented in phases is described. X-ray polarimetry has been suggested as a prominent tool for investigating the geometrical and physical properties of the emissions from active galactic nuclei (AGN). The successful launch of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) on 9 December 2021 has expanded the previously restricted scope of polarimetry into the X-ray domain, enabling X-ray polarimetric studies of AGN. Over a span of two years, IXPE has observed various AGN populations, including blazars and radio-quiet AGN. In this paper, we summarize the remarkable discoveries achieved thanks to the opening of the new window of X-ray polarimetry of AGN through IXPE observations. We will delve into two primary areas of interest: first, the magnetic field geometry and particle acceleration mechanisms in the jets of radio-loud AGN, such as blazars, where the relativistic acceleration process dominates the spectral energy distribution; and second, the geometry of the hot corona in radio-quiet AGN. Thus far, the IXPE results from blazars favor the energy-stratified shock acceleration model, and they provide evidence of helical magnetic fields inside the jet. Concerning the corona geometry, the IXPE results are consistent with a disk-originated slab-like or wedge-like shape, as could result from Comptonization around the accretion disk.

We present the results of a comparison between different methods to estimate the power of relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN). We selected a sample of 32 objects (21 flat-spectrum radio quasars, 7 BL Lacertae objects, 2 misaligned AGN, and 2 changing-look AGN) from the very large baseline array (VLBA) observations at 43 GHz of the Boston University blazar program. We then calculated the total, radiative, and kinetic jet power from both radio and high-energy gamma-ray observations, and compared the values. We found an excellent agreement between the radiative power calculated by using the Blandford and Königl model with 37 or 43 GHz data and the values derived from the high-energy γ-ray luminosity. The agreement is still acceptable if 15 GHz data are used, although with a larger dispersion, but it improves if we use a constant fraction of the γ-ray luminosity. We found a good agreement also for the kinetic power calculated with the Blandford and Königl model with 15 GHz data and the value from the extended radio emission. We also propose some easy-to-use equations to estimate the jet power.

We present results from the first 22 GHz space very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) imaging observations of M87 by RadioAstron. As a part of the Nearby AGN Key Science Program, the source was observed in 2014 February at 22 GHz with 21 ground stations, reaching projected (u, v) spacings up to ∼11 G λ. The imaging experiment was complemented by snapshot RadioAstron data of M87 obtained during 2013–2016 from the AGN Survey Key Science Program. Their longest baselines extend up to ∼25 G λ. For all of these measurements, fringes are detected only up to ∼2.8 Earth diameter or ∼3 G λ baseline lengths, resulting in a new image with angular resolution of ∼150 μ as or ∼20 Schwarzschild radii spatial resolution. The new image not only shows edge-brightened jet and counterjet structures down to submilliarcsecond scales but also clearly resolves the VLBI core region. While the overall size of the core is comparable to those reported in the literature, the ground-space fringe detection and slightly superresolved RadioAstron image suggest the presence of substructures in the nucleus, whose minimum brightness temperature exceeds T B , min ∼ 10 12 K. It is challenging to explain the origin of this record-high T B , min value for M87 by pure Doppler boosting effect with a simple conical jet geometry and known jet speed. Therefore, this can be evidence for more extreme Doppler boosting due to a blazar-like small jet viewing angle or highly efficient particle acceleration processes occurring already at the base of the outflow. Relativistic jets from (supermassive) black holes are typically observed in nonthermal emission, caused by highly relativistic electrons. Here, we study the interrelation between three-dimensional (special) relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, and particle acceleration in these jets. We inject Lagrangian particles into the jet that are accelerated through diffusive shock acceleration and radiate energy via synchrotron and inverse Compton processes. We investigate the impact of different injection nozzles on the jet dynamics, propagation, and the spectral energy distribution of relativistic particles. We consider three different injection nozzles—injecting steady, variable, and precessing jets. These jets evolve with substantially different dynamics, driving different levels of turbulence and shock structures. The steady jet shows a strong, stationary shock feature, resulting from a head-on collision with an inner back-flow along the jet axis—a jet inside a jet. This shock represents a site for highly efficient particle acceleration for electrons up to a few tens of TeV and should be visible in emission as a jet knot. Overall, we find that the total number of shocks is more essential for particle acceleration than the strength of the shocks. The precessing jet is most efficient in accelerating electrons to high energies reaching even few hundred TeVs, with power-law index ranging from 2.3 to 3.1. We compare different outflow components, such as the jet and the entrained material concerning particle acceleration. For the precessing nozzle, the particle acceleration in the entrained material is as efficient as that in the jet stream. The combined study of the flaring of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at radio wavelengths and parsec-scale jet kinematics with Very Long Baseline Interferometry has led to the view that (i) the observed flares are associated with ejections of synchrotron blobs from the core, and (ii) most of the flaring follows a one-to-one correlation with the ejection of the component. Recent results have added to the mounting evidence showing that the quasi-regular component injections into the relativistic jet may not be the only cause of the flux variability. We propose that AGN flux variability and changes in jet morphology can both be of deterministic nature, i.e., having a geometric/kinetic origin linked to the time-variable Doppler beaming of the jet emission as its direction changes due to precession (and nutation). The physics of the underlying jet leads to shocks, instabilities, or ejections of plasmoids. The appearance (morphology, flux, etc.) of the jet can, however, be strongly affected and modulated by precession. We demonstrate this modulating power of precession for OJ 287. For the first time, we show that the spectral state of the spectral energy distribution (SED) can be directly related to the jet's precession phase. We model the SED evolution and reproduce the precession parameters. Further, we apply our precession model to 11 prominent AGNs. We show that for OJ 287 precession seems to dominate the long-term variability (≳1 yr) of the AGN flux, SED spectral state, and jet morphology, while stochastic processes affect the variability on short timescales (≲0.2 yr). A black hole (BH) traveling through a uniform, gaseous medium is described by Bondi–Hoyle–Lyttleton (BHL) accretion. If the medium is magnetized, then the black hole can produce relativistic outflows. We performed the first 3D, general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of BHL accretion onto rapidly rotating black holes using the H-AMR code, where we mainly varied the strength of a background magnetic field that threads the medium. We found that the ensuing accretion continuously drags the magnetic flux to the BH, which accumulates near the event horizon until it becomes dynamically important. Depending on the strength of the background magnetic field, the BHs can sometimes launch relativistic jets with high enough power to drill out of the inner accretion flow, become bent by the headwind, and escape to large distances. For stronger background magnetic fields, the jets are continuously powered, while at weaker field strengths they are intermittent, turning on and off depending on the fluctuating gas and magnetic flux distributions near the event horizon. We find that our jets reach extremely high efficiencies of ∼100%–300%, even in the absence of an accretion disk. We also calculated the drag forces exerted by the gas onto to the BH and found that the presence of magnetic fields causes the drag forces to be much less efficient than in unmagnetized BHL accretion. They can even sometimes become negative, accelerating the BH rather than slowing it down. Our results extend classical BHL accretion to rotating BHs moving through magnetized media, and demonstrate that accretion and drag are significantly altered in this environment. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has led to the first images of a supermassive black hole, revealing the central compact objects in the elliptical galaxy M87 and the Milky Way. Proposed upgrades to this array through the next-generation EHT (ngEHT) program would sharply improve the angular resolution, dynamic range, and temporal coverage of the existing EHT observations. These improvements will uniquely enable a wealth of transformative new discoveries related to black hole science, extending from event-horizon-scale studies of strong gravity to studies of explosive transients to the cosmological growth and influence of supermassive black holes. Here, we present the key science goals for the ngEHT and their associated instrument requirements, both of which have been formulated through a multi-year international effort involving hundreds of scientists worldwide. Rotating massive stars with initial progenitor masses M prog ∼ 25–140 M ⊙ can leave rapidly rotating black holes to become collapsars. The black holes and the surrounding accretion disks may develop powerful jets by magnetohydrodynamics instabilities. The propagation of the jet in the stellar envelope provides the necessary shock heating for triggering nucleosynthesis unseen in canonical core-collapse supernovae. However, the energy budget of the jet and its effects on the final chemical abundance pattern are unclear. In this exploratory work, we present a survey on the parameter dependence of collapsar nucleosynthesis on jet energetics. We use the zero-metallicity star with M prog ∼ 40 M ⊙ as the progenitor. The parameters include the jet duration, its energy deposition rate, deposited energy, and the opening angle. We examine the correlations of the following observables: (1) the ejecta and remnant masses; (2) the energy deposition efficiency; (3) the 56Ni production and its correlation with the ejecta velocity, deposited energy, and the ejected mass; (4) the Sc–Ti–V correlation as observed in metal-poor stars; and (5) the [Zn/Fe] ratio as observed in some metal-poor stars. We also provide the chemical abundance table of these explosion models for the use of the galactic chemical evolution and stellar archeology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the effect of plasma composition on the dynamics and morphology of relativistic astrophysical jets. Our work is based on a relativistic total variation diminishing simulation code. We use a relativistic equation of state in the simulation code that accounts for the thermodynamics of a multispecies plasma, which is a mixture of electrons, positrons, and protons. To study the effect of plasma composition, we consider various jet models. These models are characterized by the same injection parameters, same jet kinetic luminosity, and the same Mach numbers. The evolution of these models shows that the plasma composition affects the propagation speed of the jet head, the structure of the jet head, and the morphology, despite fixing the initial parameters. We conclude that electron-positron jets are the slowest and show more pronounced turbulent structures in comparison to other plasma compositions. The area and locations of the hot-spots also depend on the composition of the jet plasma. Our results also show that boosting mechanisms are an important aspect of multi-dimensional simulations, which are also influenced by the change in composition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the past few years, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has provided the first-ever event horizon-scale images of the supermassive black holes (BHs) M87 * and Sagittarius A * (Sgr A * ). The next-generation EHT project is an extension of the EHT array that promises larger angular resolution and higher sensitivity to the dim, extended flux around the central ring-like structure, possibly connecting the accretion flow and the jet. The ngEHT Analysis Challenges aim to understand the science extractability from synthetic images and movies to inform the ngEHT array design and analysis algorithm development. In this work, we compare the accretion flow structure and dynamics in numerical fluid simulations that specifically target M87 * and Sgr A * , and were used to construct the source models in the challenge set. We consider (1) a steady-state axisymmetric radiatively inefficient accretion flow model with a time-dependent shearing hotspot, (2) two time-dependent single fluid general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations from the H-AMR code, (3) a two-temperature GRMHD simulation from the BHAC code, and (4) a two-temperature radiative GRMHD simulation from the KORAL code. We find that the different models exhibit remarkably similar temporal and spatial properties, except for the electron temperature, since radiative losses substantially cool down electrons near the BH and the jet sheath, signaling the importance of radiative cooling even for slowly accreting BHs such as M87 * . We restrict ourselves to standard torus accretion flows, and leave larger explorations of alternate accretion models to future work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mrk 501 is one of the most prominent TeV-emitting blazars and belongs to the class of high synchrotron peaked (HSP) blazars. The Doppler factors derived from the jet kinematics are much too low to provide sufficient beaming for the detected high-energy emission (the so-called Lorentz factor crisis). This BL Lac object is also a prime example of a misaligned AGN with an approximately 90 ∘ difference in orientation between the inner parsec-scale jet and the kpc-scale jet structure. We have performed a detailed analysis of the pc-scale jet kinematics, based on 23 years of VLBA observations (at 15 GHz) and find, in addition to robustly consolidating the already claimed stationary jet features and a hinted absence of component ejections, a significant drift of the outer nuclear jet. The two outermost jet features move with somewhat higher but still subluminal speeds. Albeit, they move orthogonally to the inner jet, which itself does not partake in the drifting motion. The effect of this intriguing kinematics is that the jet appears strongly curved at first (1995) but then appears to straighten out (2018). To our knowledge, this is the first time that the orthogonal swing of just the outer part of a nuclear jet has been observed. We discuss the possible physical nature of this turning maneuver. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a peculiar subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Among them, TXS 1206+549 belongs to a small group of radio-loud and γ-ray-emitting NLS1 galaxies. We focus on the radio properties of this galaxy by analysing archival, high-resolution, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging observations taken at 8 GHz frequency in six epochs between 1994 and 2018. Using the milliarcsecond-scale radio structure, we can resolve a core and a jet component whose angular separation increases by (0.055±0.006) mas yr−1. This corresponds to an apparent superluminal jet component motion of (3.5±0.4)c. From the core brightness temperature and the jet component proper motion, we determine the characteristic Doppler-boosting factor, the bulk Lorentz factor, and the jet viewing angle. We find no compelling evidence for a very closely aligned blazar-type jet. The parameters for TXS 1206+549 resemble those of radio-loud quasar jets with a moderate Lorentz factor (Γ≈4) and ϑ≈24∘ inclination to the line of sight.

Faraday rotation is an important probe of the magnetic fields and magnetized plasma around active galactic nuclei jets. We present a Faraday rotation measure (RM) image of the M87 jet between 85.2 and 101.3 GHz with a resolution of ∼2″ with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We found that the RM of the M87 core is (4.5 ± 0.4) × 10 ^4 rad m ^−2 with a low linear polarization fraction of (0.88 ± 0.08)%. The spatial RM gradient in the M87 jet spans a wide range from ∼ −2 × 10 ^4 rad m ^−2 to ∼3 × 10 ^4 rad m ^−2 with a typical uncertainty of 0.3 × 10 ^4 rad m ^−2 . A comparison with previous RM measurements of the core suggests that the Faraday rotation of the core may originate very close to the supermassive black hole. Both an internal origin and an external screen with a rapidly varying emitting source could be possible. As for the jet, the RM gradient indicates a helical configuration of the magnetic field that persists up to the kiloparsec scale. Combined with the kiloparsec-scale RM measurements at lower frequencies, we found that RM is frequency-dependent in the jet. One possible scenario to explain this dependence is that the kiloparsec-scale jet has a trumpet-like shape, and the jet coil unwinds near its end.
