Black titania, a conductive ceramic material class, has garnered significant interest due to its unique optical and electrochemical properties. However, synthesising and properly characterising these structures pose a considerable challenge. This diverse material family comprises various titanium oxide phases, many of them non-stoichiometric. The term “black TiO2” was first introduced in 2011 by Xiaobo Chen, but Arne Magneli’s groundbreaking discovery and in-depth investigation of black titania in 1957 laid the foundation for our understanding of this material. The non-stoichiometric black titanium oxides were then called the Magneli phases. Since then, the science of black titania has advanced, leading to numerous applications in photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, supercapacitor electrodes, batteries, gas sensors, fuel cells, and microwave absorption. Yet, the literature is rife with conflicting reports, primarily due to the inadequate analysis of black titania materials. This review aims to provide an overview of black titania nanostructures synthesis and the proper characterisation of the most common and applicable black titania phases.

This study addresses the need for enhanced antimicrobial properties of electrospun membranes, either through surface modifications or the incorporation of antimicrobial agents, which are crucial for improved clinical outcomes. In this context, chitosan—a biopolymer lauded for its biocompatibility and extracellular matrix-mimicking properties—emerges as an excellent candidate for tissue regeneration. However, fabricating chitosan nanofibers via electrospinning often challenges the preservation of their structural integrity. This research innovatively develops a chitosan/polycaprolactone (CH/PCL) composite nanofibrous membrane by employing a layer-by-layer electrospinning technique, enhanced with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized through a wet chemical process. The antibacterial efficacy, adhesive properties, and cytotoxicity of electrospun chitosan membranes were evaluated, while also analyzing their hydrophilicity and nanofibrous structure using SEM. The resulting CH/PCL-AgNPs composite membranes retain a porous framework, achieve balanced hydrophilicity, display commendable biocompatibility, and exert broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, with their efficacy correlating to the AgNP concentration. Furthermore, our data suggest that the antimicrobial efficiency of these membranes is influenced by the timed release of silver ions during the incubation period. Membranes incorporated starting with AgNPs at a concentration of 50 µg/mL effectively suppressed the growth of both microorganisms during the early stages up to 8 h of incubation. These insights underscore the potential of the developed electrospun composite membranes, with their superior antibacterial qualities, to serve as innovative solutions in the field of tissue engineering.

MXenes have received worldwide attention across various scientific and technological fields since the first report of the synthesis of Ti3C2 nanostructures in 2011. The unique characteristics of MXenes, such as superior mechanical strength and flexibility, liquid-phase processability, tunable surface functionality, high electrical conductivity, and the ability to customize their properties, have led to the widespread development and exploration of their applications in energy storage, electronics, biomedicine, catalysis, and environmental technologies. The significant growth in publications related to MXenes over the past decade highlights the extensive research interest in this material. One area that has a great potential for improvement through the integration of MXenes is sensor design. Strain sensors, temperature sensors, pressure sensors, biosensors (both optical and electrochemical), gas sensors, and environmental pollution sensors targeted at volatile organic compounds (VOCs) could all gain numerous improvements from the inclusion of MXenes. This report delves into the current research landscape, exploring the advancements in MXene-based chemo-sensor technologies and examining potential future applications across diverse sensor types.

This research is focused on enhancing the capabilities of scanning electrochemical impedance microscopy (SEIM) for detecting gold nanoparticle-labelled antibodies using electrochemically modified platinum ultramicroelectrode. The primary objective was to address the high resistance issue encountered in previous measurements with SEIM via the utilization of SEIM probes based on micro-electrodes modified by platinum microstructures, which improved the sensitivity and precision of the detection of targeted biomolecules. The modified probe resulted in a lowered charge transfer resistance by over ten times and a decrease in detection to around 100 fg/mL. We suggest potential applications in various biotechnological and biomedical fields, with future research expected to further refine this technique.

The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, particularly the most hazardous pathogens, namely Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp. (ESKAPE)-pathogens pose a significant threat to global health. Current antimicrobial therapies, including those targeting biofilms, have shown limited effectiveness against these superbugs. Nanoparticles, specifically silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), have emerged as a promising alternative for combating bacterial infections. In this study, two types of AgNPs with different physic-chemical properties were evaluated for their antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against clinical ESKAPE strains. Two types of silver nanoparticles were assessed: spherical silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-1) and cubic-shaped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-2). AgNPs-2, characterized by a cubic shape and higher surface-area-to-volume ratio, exhibited superior antimicrobial activity compared to spherical AgNPs-1. Both types of AgNPs demonstrated the ability to inhibit biofilm formation and disrupt established biofilms, leading to membrane damage and reduced viability of the bacteria. These findings highlight the potential of AgNPs as effective antibacterial agents against ESKAPE pathogens, emphasizing the importance of nanoparticle characteristics in determining their antimicrobial properties. Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms and optimize nanoparticle-based therapies for the management of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a notable group of indoor air pollutants released by household products. These substances are commonly employed as solvents in industrial operations, and some of them are recognized or suspected to be cancer-causing or mutagenic agents. Due to their high volatility, VOCs are typically present in surface waters at concentrations below a few micrograms per liter. However, in groundwater, their concentrations can reach levels up to thousands of times higher. This study analyses the applicability of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing of VOCs in aqueous medium. Tungsten oxide and bismuth vanadate photoanodes were tested for PEC sensing of xylene, toluene, and methanol in sodium chloride and sodium sulfate electrolytes. The crystalline structure and morphology of coatings were analyzed using XRD and SEM analyses. Photoelectrochemical properties were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results of the study show that aromatic compounds tend to block the surface of the photoelectrode and interfere with the PEC sensing of other substances. WO3 photoanode is found to be suitable for the PEC sensing of methanol under the mild conditions in aqueous electrolytes; however, electrode engineering and assay optimization are required to achieve better detection limits.

This study is dedicated to molecularly imprinted polymer-based sensor development for methylene blue detection. The sensor was designed by molecular imprinting of polypyrrole with phenothiazine derivative methylene blue (MB) as a template molecule. The molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was deposited directly on the surface of the indium tin oxide-coated glass electrode by potential cycling. Different deposition conditions, the layer’s durability, and thickness impact were analysed. The working electrodes were coated with molecularly imprinted and non-imprinted polymer layers. Potential pulse chronoamperometry and cyclic voltammetry were used to study these layers. Scanning electron microscopy was used to determine the surface morphology of the polymer layers. The change in optical absorption was used as an analytical tool to evaluate the capability of the MIP layer to adsorb MB. Selectivity was monitored by tracking the optical absorption changes in the presence of Azure A. In the case of MB adsorption, linearity was observed at all evaluated calibration plots in the concentration range from 0.1 μM to 10 mM. The novelty of this article is based on the methodology in the fabrication process of the sensors for MB, where MB retains its native (non-polymerised) form during the deposition of the MIP composite.

Recently, rare diseases have received attention due to the need for improvement in diagnosed patients’ and their families’ lives. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare, severe, progressive, muscle-wasting disease. Today, the therapeutic standard for treating DMD is corticosteroids, which cause serious adverse side effects. Nutraceuticals, e.g., herbal extracts or essential oils (EOs), are possible active substances to develop new drug delivery systems to improve DMD patients’ lives. New drug delivery systems lead to new drug effects, improved safety and accuracy, and new therapies for rare diseases. Herbal extracts and EOs combined with click chemistry can lead to the development of safer treatments for DMD. In this review, we focus on the need for novel drug delivery systems using EOs as the therapy for DMD and the potential use of click chemistry for drug delivery systems. New EO complex drug delivery systems may offer a new approach for improving muscle conditions and mental health issues associated with DMD. However, further research should identify the potential of these systems in the context of DMD. In this review, we discuss possibilities for applying EOs to DMD before implementing expensive research in a theoretical way.

The appearance of biological molecules, so-called biomarkers in body fluids at abnormal concentrations, is considered a good tool for detecting disease. Biomarkers are usually looked for in the most common body fluids, such as blood, nasopharyngeal fluids, urine, tears, sweat, etc. Even with significant advances in diagnostic technology, many patients with suspected infections receive empiric antimicrobial therapy rather than appropriate treatment, which is driven by rapid identification of the infectious agent, leading to increased antimicrobial resistance. To positively impact healthcare, new tests are needed that are pathogen-specific, easy to use, and produce results quickly. Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based biosensors can achieve these general goals and have enormous potential for disease detection. This article aimed to overview recent articles dedicated to electrochemical sensors modified with MIP to detect protein-based biomarkers of certain infectious diseases in human beings, particularly the biomarkers of infectious diseases, such as HIV-1, COVID-19, Dengue virus, and others. Some biomarkers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) found in blood tests, are not specific for a particular disease but are used to identify any inflammation process in the body and are also under consideration in this review. Other biomarkers are specific to a particular disease, e.g., SARS-CoV-2-S spike glycoprotein. This article analyzes the development of electrochemical sensors using molecular imprinting technology and the used materials’ influence. The research methods, the application of different electrodes, the influence of the polymers, and the established detection limits are reviewed and compared.

Maxillary sinus augmentation is a commonly used procedure for the placement of dental implants. However, the use of natural and synthetic materials in this procedure has resulted in postoperative complications ranging from 12% to 38%. To address this issue, we developed a novel calcium deficient HA/β-TCP bone grafting nanomaterial using a two-step synthesis method with appropriate structural and chemical parameters for sinus lifting applications. We demonstrated that our nanomaterial exhibits high biocompatibility, enhances cell proliferation, and stimulates collagen expression. Furthermore, the degradation of β-TCP in our nanomaterial promotes blood clot formation, which supports cell aggregation and new bone growth. In a clinical trial involving eight cases, we observed the formation of compact bone tissue 8 months after the operation, allowing for the successful installation of dental implants without any early postoperative complications. Our results suggest that our novel bone grafting nanomaterial has the potential to improve the success rate of maxillary sinus augmentation procedures.

Abstract Early detection of viral pathogens by DNA-sensors in clinical samples, contaminated foods, soil or water can dramatically improve clinical outcomes and reduce the socioeconomic impact of diseases such as COVID-19. Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR) and its associated protein Cas12a (previously known as CRISPR-Cpf1) technology is an innovative new-generation genomic engineering tool, also known as ‘genetic scissors’, that has demonstrated the accuracy and has recently been effectively applied as appropriate (E-CRISPR) DNA-sensor to detect the nucleic acid of interest. The CRISPR-Cas12a from Prevotella and Francisella 1 are guided by a short CRISPR RNA (gRNA). The unique simultaneous cis- and trans- DNA cleavage after target sequence recognition at the PAM site, sticky-end (5–7 bp) employment, and ssDNA/dsDNA hybrid cleavage strategies to manipulate the attractive nature of CRISPR–Cas12a are reviewed. DNA-sensors based on the CRISPR-Cas12a technology for rapid, robust, sensitive, inexpensive, and selective detection of virus DNA without additional sample purification, amplification, fluorescent-agent- and/or quencher-labeling are relevant and becoming increasingly important in industrial and medical applications. In addition, CRISPR-Cas12a system shows great potential in the field of E-CRISPR-based bioassay research technologies. Therefore, we are highlighting insights in this research direction. Synthetic bone grafting materials play a significant role in various medical applications involving bone regeneration and repair. Their ability to mimic the properties of natural bone and promote the healing process has contributed to their growing relevance. While calcium–phosphates and their composites with various polymers and biopolymers are widely used in clinical and experimental research, the diverse range of available polymer-based materials poses challenges in selecting the most suitable grafts for successful bone repair. This review aims to address the fundamental issues of bone biology and regeneration while providing a clear perspective on the principles guiding the development of synthetic materials. In this study, we delve into the basic principles underlying the creation of synthetic bone composites and explore the mechanisms of formation for biologically important complexes and structures associated with the various constituent parts of these materials. Additionally, we offer comprehensive information on the application of biologically active substances to enhance the properties and bioactivity of synthetic bone grafting materials. By presenting these insights, our review enables a deeper understanding of the regeneration processes facilitated by the application of synthetic bone composites.

The profound understanding and detailed evaluation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike (SCoV2-S) protein and specific antibody interaction mechanism is of high importance in the development of immunosensors for COVID-19. In the present work, we studied a model system of immobilized SCoV2-S protein and specific monoclonal antibodies by molecular dynamics of immune complex formation in real time. We simultaneously applied spectroscopic ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation to reveal the features and steps of the immune complex formation. We showed direct experimental evidence based on acoustic and optical measurements that the immune complex between covalently immobilized SCoV2-S and specific monoclonal antibodies is formed in two stages. Based on these findings it was demonstrated that applying a two-step binding mathematical model for kinetics analysis leads to a more precise determination of interaction rate constants than that determined by the 1:1 Langmuir binding model. Our investigation showed that the equilibrium dissociation constants (KD) determined by a two-step binding model and the 1:1 Langmuir model could differ significantly. The reported findings can facilitate a deeper understanding of antigen–antibody immune complex formation steps and can open a new way for the evaluation of antibody affinity towards corresponding antigens.

The spike (S) protein and its receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 have been continually evolving, yielding the majority of significant missense mutations and new variants of concern. In this study, we examined how monoclonal antibodies against RBD (mAbs-SCoV2-RBD) and polyclonal antibodies present in convalescent human serum specifically interact with the S protein of wild-type and SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) in real time and how this can be reflected through surface mass density. Moreover, we combined two distinct, label-free measurement techniques: one based on changes in surface electromagnetic waves after reflection from the surface, and the other on changes in acoustic waves. The results demonstrated that dry surface mass density (ΓSE) of mAbs-SCoV2-RBD attached to the RBD of the S protein decreases three-fold, from 148 ng/cm2 to 46 ng/cm2, due to the B.1.351 or so-called beta mutation of coronavirus and its S protein (SCoV2-β). Consequently, the obtained wet mass ΓQCM-D resulted in values two times lower, from 319 ng/cm2 to 158 ng/cm2, and the hydration of mAbs-SCoV2-RBD/SCoV2-β immune complex was 70.88%. Conversely, when polyclonal antibodies present in convalescent human serum form immune complexes with the S protein of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, the ΓSE decreased from 279 ng/cm2 to 249 ng/cm2, and ΓQCM-D from 1545 ng/cm2 to 1366 ng/cm2. These results can give insights into the differences between the interaction of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies with SARS-CoV-2 VOCs.

Abstract Viral infections are the most common among diseases that globally require around 60 percent of medical care. However, in the heat of the pandemic, there was a lack of medical equipment and inpatient facilities to provide all patients with viral infections. The detection of viral infections is possible in three general ways such as (i) direct virus detection, which is performed immediately 1–3 days after the infection, (ii) determination of antibodies against some virus proteins mainly observed during/after virus incubation period, (iii) detection of virus-induced disease when specific tissue changes in the organism. This review surveys some global pandemics from 1889 to 2020, virus types, which induced these pandemics, and symptoms of some viral diseases. Non-analytical methods such as radiology and microscopy also are overviewed. This review overlooks molecular analysis methods such as nucleic acid amplification, antibody-antigen complex determination, CRISPR-Cas system-based viral genome determination methods. Methods widely used in the certificated diagnostic laboratory for SARS-CoV-2, Influenza A, B, C, HIV, and other viruses during a viral pandemic are outlined. A comprehensive overview of molecular analytical methods has shown that the assay's sensitivity, accuracy, and suitability for virus detection depends on the choice of the number of regions in the viral open reading frame (ORF) genome sequence and the validity of the selected analytical method.

Biomarkers can provide critical information about cancer and many other diseases; therefore, developing analytical systems for recognising biomarkers is an essential direction in bioanalytical chemistry. Recently molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been applied in analytical systems to determine biomarkers. This article aims to an overview of MIPs used for the detection of cancer biomarkers, namely: prostate cancer (PSA), breast cancer (CA15-3, HER-2), epithelial ovarian cancer (CA-125), hepatocellular carcinoma (AFP), and small molecule cancer biomarkers (5-HIAA and neopterin). These cancer biomarkers may be found in tumours, blood, urine, faeces, or other body fluids or tissues. The determination of low concentrations of biomarkers in these complex matrices is technically challenging. The overviewed studies used MIP-based biosensors to assess natural or artificial samples such as blood, serum, plasma, or urine. Molecular imprinting technology and MIP-based sensor creation principles are outlined. Analytical signal determination methods and the nature and chemical structure of the imprinted polymers are discussed. Based on the reviewed biosensors, the results are compared, and the most suitable materials for each biomarker are discussed.

Various forms of zinc oxide (ZnO) are frequently used in the design of optical and electrochemical sensors. However, the optical and electrochemical properties of ZnO should be properly adjusted depending on the application area. Therefore, in this work, we have investigated changing/tuning the properties of ZnO by depositing a layer of polydopamine (PDA) on its surface. In order to perform this investigation, the surface of fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) was modified with the layer of ZnO nanorods and PDA. ZnO nanorods were synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis technique, and after the synthesis, they were coated with polydopamine exploiting the self-polymerization of dopamine. The nanostructures were investigated by using electrochemical and optical methods. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements showed that electrochemical properties of FTO-ZnO and FTO-ZnO-PDA nanostructures could be changed by the variation of both—applied electrical potential and/or exposition towards lighting. Interaction between ZnO-PDA and bovine serum albumin (BSA) molecules has been investigated by (photo)electrochemical and photoluminescence methods. A mechanism of possible interaction between BSA and the ZnO-PDA surface has been proposed.

Abstract In this study, we reported the development of Prussian blue (PB), poly(pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid) (PPCA), and glucose oxidase (GOx) biocomposite modified graphite rod (GR) electrode as a potential biocathode for single enzyme biofuel cell fuelled by glucose. In order to design the biocathode, the GR electrode was coated with a composite of PB particles embedded in the PPCA shell and an additional layer of PPCA by cyclic voltammetry. Meanwhile, GOx molecules were covalently attached to the carboxyl groups of PPCA by an amide bond. The optimal conditions for the biocathode preparation were elaborated experimentally. After optimization, the developed biocathode showed excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of H2O2 formed during GOx catalyzed glucose oxidation at a low potential of 0.1 V vs Ag/AgCl, as well as good electrochemical performance. An electrocatalytic current density of 31.68 ± 2.70 μA/cm2 and open-circuit potential (OCP) of 293.34 ± 15.70 mV in O2-saturated 10 mM glucose solution at pH 6.0 were recorded. A maximal OCP of 430.15 ± 15.10 mV was recorded at 98.86 mM of glucose. In addition, the biocathode showed good operational stability, maintaining 95.53 ± 0.15% of the initial response after 14 days. These results suggest that this simply designed biocathode can be applied to the construction of a glucose-powered single enzyme biofuel cell.

The development of microbial fuel cells based on electro-catalytic processes is among the novel topics, which are recently emerging in the sustainable development of energetic systems. Microbial fuel cells have emerged as unique biocatalytic systems, which transform the chemical energy accumulated in renewable organic fuels and at the same time reduce pollution from hazardous organic compounds. However, not all microorganisms involved in metabolic/catalytic processes generate sufficient redox potential. In this research, we have assessed the applicability of the microorganism Rhizobium anhuiense as a catalyst suitable for the design of microbial fuel cells. To improve the charge transfer, several redox mediators were tested, namely menadione, riboflavin, and 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ). The best performance was determined for a Rhizobium anhuiense-based bio-anode mediated by menadione with a 0.385 mV open circuit potential and 5.5 μW/cm2 maximal power density at 0.35 mV, which generated 50 μA/cm2 anode current at the same potential.

Detecting bacteria—Listeria monocytogenes—is an essential healthcare and food industry issue. The objective of the current study was to apply platinum (Pt) and screen-printed carbon (SPCE) electrodes modified by molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) in the design of an electrochemical sensor for the detection of Listeria monocytogenes. A sequence of potential pulses was used to perform the electrochemical deposition of the non-imprinted polypyrrole (NIP-Ppy) layer and Listeria monocytogenes-imprinted polypyrrole (MIP-Ppy) layer over SPCE and Pt electrodes. The bacteria were removed by incubating Ppy-modified electrodes in different extraction solutions (sulphuric acid, acetic acid, L-lysine, and trypsin) to determine the most efficient solution for extraction and to obtain a more sensitive and repeatable design of the sensor. The performance of MIP-Ppy- and NIP-Ppy-modified electrodes was evaluated by pulsed amperometric detection (PAD). According to the results of this research, it can be assumed that the most effective MIP-Ppy/SPCE sensor can be designed by removing bacteria with the proteolytic enzyme trypsin. The LOD and LOQ of the MIP-Ppy/SPCE were 70 CFU/mL and 210 CFU/mL, respectively, with a linear range from 300 to 6700 CFU/mL.

In this study, ZnO nanostructures with different types of morphologies and particle sizes were evaluated and applied for the development of an immunosensor. The first material was composed of spherical, polydisperse nanostructures with a particle size in the range of 10–160 nm. The second was made up of more compact rod-like spherical nanostructures with the diameter of these rods in the range of 50–400 nm, and approximately 98% of the particles were in the range of 20–70 nm. The last sample of ZnO was made up of rod-shaped particles with a diameter of 10–80 nm. These ZnO nanostructures were mixed with Nafion solution and drop-casted onto screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE), followed by a further immobilization of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA). The affinity interaction of PSA with monoclonal antibodies against PSA (anti-PSA) was evaluated using the differential pulse voltammetry technique. The limit of detection and limit of quantification of anti-PSA were determined as 1.35 nM and 4.08 nM for compact rod-shaped spherical ZnO nanostructures, and 2.36 nM and 7.15 nM for rod-shaped ZnO nanostructures, respectively.

Currently, Ag/AgCl-based reference electrodes are used in most electrochemical biosensors and other bioelectrochemical devices. However, standard reference electrodes are rather large and do not always fit within electrochemical cells designed for the determination of analytes in low-volume aliquots. Therefore, various designs and improvements in reference electrodes are critical for the future development of electrochemical biosensors and other bioelectrochemical devices. In this study, we explain a procedure to apply common laboratory polyacrylamide hydrogel in a semipermeable junction membrane between the Ag/AgCl reference electrode and the electrochemical cell. During this research, we have created disposable, easily scalable, and reproducible membranes suitable for the design of reference electrodes. Thus, we came up with castable semipermeable membranes for reference electrodes. Performed experiments highlighted the most suitable gel formation conditions to achieve optimal porosity. Here, Cl− ion diffusion through the designed polymeric junctions was evaluated. The designed reference electrode was also tested in a three-electrode flow system. The results show that home-built electrodes can compete with commercial products due to low reference electrode potential deviation (~3 mV), long shelf-life (up to six months), good stability, low cost, and disposability. The results show a high response rate, which makes in-house formed polyacrylamide gel junctions good membrane alternatives in the design of reference electrodes, especially for these applications where high-intensity dyes or toxic compounds are used and therefore disposable electrodes are required.

The development of new high-power biofuel cells has been limited in the past by slow or indirect charge transfer. In this study, enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC) systems were explored with different materials used to evaluate their applicability as redox mediators. Redox mediators of different natures have been selected for this research. Cytochrome c, Chlorophyll a, and supernatant of ultrasonically disrupted algae Chlorella vulgaris cells were examined as potential redox mediators. The effect of heparin on the EBFC was also evaluated under the same analytical conditions. The measurements of open circuit potential (OCP) and the evaluation of the current response in two modes of measurement were performed (i) during potential cycling in cyclic voltammetry measurements or (ii) at the constant potential value in chronoamperometry, and were applied for the evaluation of EBFC. Cytochrome c, Chlorophyll a, and the supernatant of ultrasonically disrupted algae Chlorella vulgaris cells-based redox mediators were efficient in the glucose oxidase (GOx) based EBFC. Electron transfer from GOx to the electrode was facilitated through the redox mediators adsorbed on the electrode. Electrodes modified with Chlorophyll a- and Cytochrome c-based redox mediators were suitable for the development of glucose biosensors. This was demonstrated by increasing the glucose concentration within 0 mM–100 mM in the system, the current density increased, and the system reached equilibrium rather faster regarding the electrochemical reaction. The power density is an important feature in revealing the action of biofuel cells. The highest power values were generated by the systems based on the application of redox-mediated Chlorophyll a and the supernatant of ultrasonically disrupted Chlorella vulgaris cells. The surface power density was about 2.5–4.0 µW/cm2. Control of a study was performed with a polished graphite electrode and the maximum surface power density was 0.02471 µW/cm2.

This study addresses the need for enhanced antimicrobial properties of electrospun membranes, either through surface modifications or the incorporation of antimicrobial agents, which are crucial for improved clinical outcomes. In this context, chitosan—a biopolymer lauded for its biocompatibility and extracellular matrix-mimicking properties—emerges as an excellent candidate for tissue regeneration. However, fabricating chitosan nanofibers via electrospinning often challenges the preservation of their structural integrity. This research innovatively develops a chitosan/polycaprolactone (CH/PCL) composite nanofibrous membrane by employing a layer-by-layer electrospinning technique, enhanced with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized through a wet chemical process. The antibacterial efficacy, adhesive properties, and cytotoxicity of electrospun chitosan membranes were evaluated, while also analyzing their hydrophilicity and nanofibrous structure using SEM. The resulting CH/PCL-AgNPs composite membranes retain a porous framework, achieve balanced hydrophilicity, display commendable biocompatibility, and exert broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, with their efficacy correlating to the AgNP concentration. Furthermore, our data suggest that the antimicrobial efficiency of these membranes is influenced by the timed release of silver ions during the incubation period. Membranes incorporated starting with AgNPs at a concentration of 50 µg/mL effectively suppressed the growth of both microorganisms during the early stages up to 8 h of incubation. These insights underscore the potential of the developed electrospun composite membranes, with their superior antibacterial qualities, to serve as innovative solutions in the field of tissue engineering. In this article, we report the development of an electrochemical biosensor for the determination of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (rS). A gold disc electrode was electrochemically modified to form the nanocrystalline gold structure on the surface. Then, it was further altered by a self-assembling monolayer based on a mixture of two alkane thiols: 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (11-MUA) and 6-mercapto-1-hexanol (6-MCOH) (SAMmix). After activating carboxyl groups using a N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N’-ethyl-carbodiimide hydrochloride and N-hydroxysuccinimide mixture, the rS protein was covalently immobilized on the top of the SAMmix. This electrode was used to design an electrochemical sensor suitable for determining antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 rS protein (anti-rS). We assessed the association between the immobilized rS protein and the anti-rS antibody present in the blood serum of a SARS-CoV-2 infected person using three electrochemical methods: cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and potential pulsed amperometry. The results demonstrated that differential pulse voltammetry and potential pulsed amperometry measurements displayed similar sensitivity. In contrast, the measurements performed by cyclic voltammetry suggest that this method is the most sensitive out of the three methods applied in this research.

The most common neurological disorders, i.e., Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), are characterized by degeneration of cognitive functions due to the loss of neurons in the central nervous system. The aggregation of amyloid proteins is an important pathological feature of neurological disorders.The aggregation process involves a series of complex structural transitions from monomeric to the formation of fibrils. Despite its potential importance in understanding the pathobiology of PD and AD diseases, the details of the aggregation process are still unclear. Nanoparticles (NPs) absorbed by the human circulatory system can interact with amyloid proteins in the human brain and cause PD. In this work, we report the study of the interaction between TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) on the aggregation kinetics of β-amyloid fragment 1-40 (βA) and α-synuclein protein using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). The characterizations of ZnO-NPs and TiO2-NPs were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrum, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The interaction of nanoparticles with amyloid proteins was investigated by SERS. Our study showed that exposure of amyloid protein molecules to TiO2-NPs and ZnO-NPs after incubation at 37 °C caused morphological changes and stimulated aggregation and fibrillation. In addition, significant differences in the intensity and location of active Raman frequencies in the amide I domain were found. The principal component analysis (PCA) results show that the effect of NPs after incubation at 4 °C does not cause changes in βA structure.
