During the past decade, flexible/stretchable energy storage devices have garnered increasing attention, with the successful development of wearable electronics. However, due to the repeated deformation accompanied with the electrochemical depletion process, these devices suffer from unavoidable damage, including cracks, crazing, puncture and delamination, which can lead to serious performance degradation or even safety issues. Simultaneously, inspired by biological organs, self-healing capability is found to be a promising approach to address these issues by restoring the mechanical and electrochemical performance. This review first summarizes the structural design and features of various flexible/stretchable energy storage devices, from 1D to 3D configurations. Then, basic concepts and three self-healing mechanisms, including capsule-based systems, vascular-based systems, and intrinsic healing systems are analyzed along with a brief look at existing applications. Then we review all the important parts of state-of-art flexible/stretchable self-healing supercapacitors and batteries including electrodes, electrolytes, substrates and encapsulation. Moreover, a detailed evaluation of methodologies for flexibility, stretchability and self-healing capabilities are described in detail. Finally, the critical challenges and prospects of future promising solutions for self-healing flexible/stretchable energy storage devices or even electronics are provided.

The demand for high rate energy storage systems is continuously increasing driven by portable electronics, hybrid/electric vehicles and the need for balancing the smart grid. Accordingly, Nb2O5 based materials have gained great attention because of their fast cation intercalation faradaic charge storage that endows them with high rate energy storage performance. In this review, we describe the crystalline features of the five main phases of Nb2O5 and analyze their specific electrochemical characteristics with an emphasis on the intrinsic ion intercalation pseudocapacitive behavior of T-Nb2O5. The charge storage mechanisms, electrochemical performance and state-of-the-art characterization techniques for Nb2O5 anodes are summarized. Next, we review recent progress in developing various types of Nb2O5 based fast charging electrode materials, including Nb2O5 based mixed metal oxides and composites. Finally, we highlight the major challenges for Nb2O5 based materials in the realm of high rate rechargeable energy storage and provide perspectives for future research.

Unlike growth on tissue, microbes can grow freely on implantable devices with minimal immune system intervention and often form resilient biofilms that continuously pump out pathogenic cells. The efficacy of antibiotics used to treat infection is declining due to increased rates of pathogenic resistance. A simple, one-step zwitterionic surface modification is developed to significantly reduce protein and microbial adhesion to synthetic materials and demonstrate the successful modification of several clinically relevant materials, including recalcitrant materials such as elastomeric polydimethylsiloxane. The treated surfaces exhibit robust adhesion resistance against proteins and microorganisms in both static and flow conditions. Furthermore, the surface treatment prevents the adhesion of mammalian fibroblast cells while displaying no cytotoxicity. To demonstrate the clinical efficacy of the novel technology in the real-world, a surface-treated, commercial silicone foley catheter is developed that is cleared for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (K192034). 16long-term catheterized patients received surface-treated catheters and completed a Patient Global Impression of Improvement (PGI-I) questionnaire. 10out of 16patients described their urinary tract condition post implantation as "much better" or "very much better" and 72% (n=13) of patients desire to continue using the surface-treated catheter over conventional latex or silicone catheters.

The nascent field of nanotechnology-enabled metallurgy has great potential. However, the role of eutectic alloys and the nature of alloy solidification in this field are still largely unknown. To demonstrate one of the promises of liquid metals in the field, we explore a model system of catalytically active Bi-Sn nano-alloys produced using a liquid-phase ultrasonication technique and investigate their phase separation, surface oxidation, and nucleation. The Bi-Sn ratio determines the grain boundary properties and the emergence of dislocations within the nano-alloys. The eutectic system gives rise to the smallest grain dimensions among all Bi-Sn ratios along with more pronounced dislocation formation within the nano-alloys. Using electrochemical CO2 reduction and photocatalysis, we demonstrate that the structural peculiarity of the eutectic nano-alloys offers the highest catalytic activity in comparison with their non-eutectic counterparts. The fundamentals of nano-alloy formation revealed here may establish the groundwork for creating bimetallic and multimetallic nano-alloys., The combination of metallurgy concepts and nanotechnology with liquid metal processing has been largely unexplored. Here the authors use liquid-phase ultrasonication to produce a model system of catalytically active nano-alloys, demonstrating electrocatalysis and photocatalysis.

The development of power generators that can function in harsh snowy environments and in contact with snow can be beneficial but challenging to accomplish. Herein, we introduce the first snow-based triboelectric nanogenerator (snow-TENG) that can be used as an energy harvester and a multifunctional sensor based on the principle of snow-triboelectrification. In this work, we used a 3D printing technique for the precise design and deposition of the electrode and triboelectric layer, leading to flexible, stretchable and metal-free triboelectric generators. Based on the single electrode mode, the device can generate an instantaneous output power density as high as 0.2 mW/m(2), an open circuit voltage up to 8 V, and a current density of 40 μA/m(2). In addition, the snow-TENG can function as a miniaturized weather station to monitor the weather in real time to provide accurate information about the snowfall rate, snow accumulation depth, wind direction, and speed in snowy and/or icy environments. In addition, the snow-TENG can be used as a wearable power source and biomechanical sensor to detect human body motions, which may prove useful for snow-related sports. Unlike conventional sensor platforms, our design works without the need for batteries or image processing systems. We envision these devices could potentially be integrated into solar panels to ensure continuous power supply during snowy weather conditions.

Carbon-based supercapacitors exhibit great rate capability, power density and cycle life, but suffer from relatively low energy density. Polyaniline provides high specific capacitance, but lacks cycling stability. By combining carbon-based materials with tetraaniline, an oligomer of polyaniline, a hybrid composite is formed that demonstrates improved supercapacitor performance relative to either material alone. In this study, the reduced graphene oxide-oligoaniline composites have been synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal process without the need for adding any oxidizing or reducing agents. FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy indicate the successful reduction of GO to rGO and the formation of aniline oligomers. Unlike most polyaniline nanostructures for which charge storage kinetics are limited by slow diffusion-controlled reactions, the majority of oligoaniline in this composite is exposed to the electrolyte and stores charge through fast surface-controlled reactions. The unique microstructure of the rGO-oligoaniline composites facilitates transport of ions and electrons, leading to greater utilization of the active materials, high specific capacitance of 640 F/g at 0.2 mA/cm2 (corresponding to 707 C/g specific capacity), great rate capability and good cycle stability (91% retention after 2000 cycles).

We report a green carbon capture and conversion technology offering scalability and economic viability for mitigating CO2 emissions. The technology uses suspensions of gallium liquid metal to reduce CO2 into carbonaceous solid products and O2 at near room temperature. The nonpolar nature of the liquid gallium interface allows the solid products to instantaneously exfoliate, hence keeping active sites accessible. The solid co-contributor of silver-gallium rods ensures a cyclic sustainable process. The overall process relies on mechanical energy as the input, which drives nano dimensional triboelectrochemical reactions. By altering the secondary solvent and changing the reactor height, the dissolution and conversion efficiency can be tuned. The optimum reactor height is only 27 cm, when gallium/silver fluoride mix at 7:1 mass ratio is employed as the reaction material. At CO2 input of ~8 sccm, 92% efficiency was obtained at the record low input energy of 228.5 kW∙h for the capture and conversion of a tonne of CO2. The potential impact of this green technology is remarkable, likely benefiting a variety of industries and offering an economical solution for CO2 capture and conversion.

The separation performance, energy demand, and operating costs of electro-coagulation (EC) are compared to conventional chemical coagulation for oil&ndash, water separation using a simulated oil- and gas-produced water matrix. An iron-based chemical coagulant and sacrificial iron electrodes are evaluated. Effluent turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), and oil and grease (O&amp, G) removal were determined for various coagulant concentrations and reaction times and current densities. Chemical coagulation produced superior turbidity removal when scaled by the total iron dose. At lower iron doses (&lt, 500 mg/L), chemical coagulation yielded better COD, turbidity, and O&amp, G removal. However, chemical coagulation was unable to effectively remove contaminants to meet the offshore discharge limit of 29 ppm O&amp, G. At higher iron doses, EC was more effective at removing COD and O&amp, G. The energy consumption of EC was found to be much higher even when factoring in the energy of production, transporting, and mixing of chemical coagulants, but the overall cost of EC was approximately half the cost of chemical coagulation, and more effective at O&amp, G removal.

The synthesis of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) that contain site-specifically substituted backbone heteroatoms is one of the essential goals that must be achieved in order to control the electronic properties of these next generation organic materials. We have exploited our recently reported solid-state topochemical polymerization/cyclization-aromatization strategy to convert the simple 1,4-bis(3-pyridyl)butadiynes 3a,b into the fjord-edge nitrogen-doped graphene nanoribbon structures 1a,b (fjord-edge N2[8]GNRs). Structural assignments are confirmed by CP/MAS 13C NMR, Raman, and XPS spectroscopy. The fjord-edge N2[8]GNRs 1a,b are promising precursors for the novel backbone nitrogen-substituted N2[8]AGNRs 2a,b. Geometry and band calculations on N2[8]AGNR 2c indicate that this class of nanoribbons should have unusual bonding topology and metallicity.

We report our discovery of utilizing perhydroxylated dodecaborate clusters ([B12(OH)12]2-) as a molecular cross-linker to generate a hybrid tungsten oxide material. We further demonstrate how these robust B12-based clusters in the resulting hybrid tungsten oxide material can effectively preserve the specific capacitance up to 4000 cycles and reduce the charge transfer resistance as well as the response time compared to that of pristine tungsten oxide.

Metallic molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), e.g., 1T phase, is touted as a highly promising material for energy storage that already displays a great capacitive performance. However, due to its tendency to aggregate and restack, it remains a formidable challenge to assemble a high-performance electrode without scrambling the intrinsic structure. Here, we report an electrohydrodynamic-assisted fabrication of 3D crumpled MoS2 (c-MoS2) and its formation of an additive-free stable ink for scalable inkjet printing. The 3D c-MoS2 powders exhibited a high concentration of metallic 1T phase and an ultrathin structure. The aggregation-resistant properties of the 3D crumpled particles endow the electrodes with open space for electrolyte ion transport. Importantly, we experimentally discovered and theoretically validated that 3D 1T c-MoS2 enables an extended electrochemical stable working potential range and enhanced capacitive performance in a bivalent magnesium-ion aqueous electrolyte. With reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as the positive electrode material, we inkjet-printed 96 rigid asymmetric micro-supercapacitors (AMSCs) on a 4-in. Si/SiO2 wafer and 100 flexible AMSCs on photo paper. These AMSCs exhibited a wide stable working voltage of 1.75 V and excellent capacitance retention of 96% over 20 000 cycles for a single device. Our work highlights the promise of 3D layered materials as well-dispersed functional materials for large-scale printed flexible energy storage devices.

Conjugated polyaniline has shown anticorrosive, hydrophilic, antibacterial, pH-responsive, and pseudocapacitive properties making it of interest in many fields. However, in situ grafting of polyaniline without harsh chemical treatments is challenging. In this study, we report a simple, fast, and non-destructive surface modification method for grafting tetraaniline (TANI), the smallest conjugated repeat unit of polyaniline, onto several materials via perfluorophenylazide photochemistry. The new materials are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectroscopy. TANI is shown to be covalently bonded to important carbon materials including graphite, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, large area modifications on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films through dip-coating or spray-coating demonstrate the potential applicability in biomedical applications where high transparency, patternability, and low bio-adhesion are needed. Another important application is preventing biofouling in membranes for water purification. Here we report the first oligoaniline grafted water filtration membranes by modifying commercially available polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. The modified membranes are hydrophilic as demonstrated by captive bubble experiments and exhibit extraordinarily low bovine serum albumin (BSA) and Escherichia coli adhesions. Superior membrane performance in terms of flux, BSA rejection and flux recovery after biofouling are demonstrated using a cross-flow system and dead-end cells, showing excellent fouling resistance produced by the in situ modification.

Three-dimensional graphenes are versatile materials for a range of electronic applications and considered among the most promising candidates for electrodes in future electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) as they are expected to outperform commercially used activated carbon. Parameters such as electrical conductivity and active surface area are critical to the final device performance. By adding carbon nanodots to graphene oxide in the starting material for our standard laser-assisted reduction process, the structural integrity (i.e. lower defect density) of the final 3D-graphene is improved. As a result, the active surface area in the hybrid starting materials was increased by 130% and the electrical conductivity enhanced by nearly an order of magnitude compared to pure laser-reduced graphene oxide. These improved material parameters lead to enhanced device performance of the EDLC electrodes. The frequency response, i.e. the minimum phase angle and the relaxation time, were significantly improved from −82.2° and 128 ms to −84.3° and 7.6 ms, respectively. For the same devices the specific gravimetric device capacitance was increased from 110 to a maximum value of 214 F g−1 at a scan rate of 10 mV s−1.

Room-temperature synthesis of 2D graphitic materials (2D-GMs) remains an elusive aim, especially with electrochemical means. Here, it is shown that liquid metals render this possible as they offer catalytic activity and an ultrasmooth templating interface that promotes Frank-van der Merwe regime growth, while allowing facile exfoliation due to the absence of interfacial forces as a nonpolar liquid. The 2D-GMs are formed at low onset potential and can be in situ doped depending on the choice of organic precursors and the electrochemical set-up. The materials are tuned to exhibit porous or pinhole-free morphologies and are engineered for their degree of oxidation and number of layers. The proposed liquid-metal-based room-temperature electrochemical route can be expanded to many other 2D materials.

Tungsten borides, such as tungsten tetraboride (WB4) exhibit a wide range of appealing physical properties, including superhardness, chemical inertness and electronic conductivity. Among the various tungsten borides, the most puzzling remains WB4, with its crystal structure to linger in question for over half a century (Lech et al. in Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 112:3223–3228, 2015). In the present investigation, polycrystalline WB4 samples have been synthesized with two different methods and characterized at the atomic level by combining X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The 11B multiple quantum MAS experiment revealed a range of boron sites that were not resolved within the experiment. This result is in contrast to the 11B MAS spectrum of WB2 with four resolved, discernible boron resonances. However, despite the structural complexity and boron-site variety in WB4, the detection of a single exponential of 11B spin–lattice relaxation recovery suggested that all of the boron sites relaxed with a single time constant. The Knight shift (K) was found to be independent of temperature while the $$ T_{1}^{ - 1} $$ was governed by the Korringa law with a Korringa product T1T = 350 sK across the entire temperature range (168–437 K) of this study. The measured Korringa product was small, indicating substantial spin–lattice relaxation resulting from coupling with the conduction carriers. The abovementioned experimental results not only clearly rule out structures, such as the “MoB4-type phase” of WB4, with the resulting Fermi level in the pseudo-gap as has previously been predicted theoretically; but they also provide a comprehensible and valuable insight into the structural and electronic properties of WB4 at the atomic level.

Carbon materials are widely used for supercapacitor applications thanks to their high surface area, good rate capability, and excellent cycling stability. However, the development of high energy density carbon supercapacitors still remains a challenge. In this work, hollow Co3O4 nanoboxes have been embedded into three-dimensional macroporous laser-scribed graphene (LSG) to produce composite electrodes with improved electrochemical performance. Here, Co3O4 provides high capacity through fast and reversible redox reactions, while LSG serves as a conductive network to maintain high power. The open nanobox morphology is a unique solution for extracting the maximum capacity from Co3O4, resulting in electrodes whose surfaces, both internal and external, are accessible to the electrolyte. The electrochemical performance of the composite material is promising with a volumetric capacity of 60.0 C/cm3 and a specific capacity of 542.3 C/g, corresponding to 682.0 C/g of the constituent Co3O4. With a low equivalent series resistance of 0.9 Ω, the Co3O4/LSG electrode is able to maintain 113.1% of its original capacity after 10,000 cycles. This work provides new insights into the design of high-performance carbon/metal oxide nanocomposites for next-generation energy storage devices.

Graphene is extensively utilized in energy storage devices because of its high surface area and electronic conductivity as well as ease of electrode fabrication. But graphene sheets often stack themselves in polymeric matrices leading to poor capacitive performance. This problem was addressed herein by developing and inserting respectively two types of nano-sized conducting polymers into graphene interlayer spacing. The resulting hydrogel composite electrodes demonstrated efficient electron transfer for fast and reversible Faradaic reactions at the interface. Theoretical modelling by the density functional theory suggested that the reduction involve 2H + transfer steps from polyaniline to graphene oxide: the first step would be an epoxy-ring opening process after activation of the C-O bond, and the second step would be C-O rupture leading to a de-epoxidation process. This binder-free electrode demonstrated high cycling performance and ultrahigh volumetric capacitance of 612 F cm −3 , being 10 times higher than the activated carbon used in the current industry. In this work, we investigate the high-pressure behavior of the stabilized high-temperature (HT) orthorhombic phase of WB using radial X-ray diffraction in a diamond-anvil cell at room temperature. The experiments were performed under nonhydrostatic compression up to 52 GPa. For comparison, the low-temperature (LT) tetragonal phase of WB was also compressed nonhydrostatically to 36 GPa to explore structurally induced changes to its mechanical properties. Although our microindentation hardness tests indicate that the HT WB possesses slightly higher hardness, synchrotron-based high-pressure compression data yield significant distinct incompressibilities. The ambient pressure bulk modulus of the HT phase of WB is 341 ± 5 GPa obtained by using the second-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state, while for the LT phase of WB the incompressibility increased to 381 ± 3 GPa. Since their debut in 2012, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attained high performance in terms of both energy density and instantaneous conversion, reaching up to 500 W m−2 and 85%, respectively, synchronous with multiple energy sources and hybridized designs. Here, a comprehensive review of the design guidelines of TENGs, their performance, and their designs in the context of Internet of Things (IoT) applications is presented. The development stages of TENGs in large‐scale self‐powered systems and technological applications enabled by harvesting energy from water waves or wind energy sources are also reviewed. This self‐powered capability is essential considering that IoT applications should be capable of operation anywhere and anytime, supported by a network of energy harvesting systems in arbitrary environments. In addition, this review paper investigates the development of self‐charging power units (SCPUs), which can be realized by pairing TENGs with energy storage devices, such as batteries and capacitors. Consequently, different designs of power management circuits, supercapacitors, and batteries that can be integrated with TENG devices are also reviewed. Finally, the significant factors that need to be addressed when designing and optimizing TENG‐based systems for energy harvesting and self‐powered sensing applications are discussed., Self‐powered and integrated triboelectric nanogenerators are comprehensively reviewed based on blue energy, their performance, and hybrid designs under the context of large‐scale systems and Internet of Things applications.

This study aims to investigate the effect of the potential window on heat generation in carbon-based electrical double layer capacitors (EDLCs) with ionic-liquid (IL)-based electrolytes using in operando calorimetry. The EDLCs consisted of two identical activated-carbon electrodes with either neat 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl)imide ([Pyr14 ][TFSI]) electrolyte or 1.0 m [Pyr14 ][TFSI] in propylene carbonate (PC) as electrolyte. The instantaneous heat generation rate at each electrode was measured under galvanostatic cycling for different potential windows ranging from 1 to 4 V. First, the heat generation rates at the positive and negative electrodes differed significantly in neat IL owing to the differences in the ion sizes and diffusion coefficients. However, these differences were minimized when the IL was diluted in PC. Second, for EDLC in neat [Pyr14 ][TFSI] at high potential window (4 V), a pronounced endothermic peak was observed at the beginning of the charging step at the positive electrode owing to TFSI- intercalation in the activated carbon. On the other hand, for EDLC in 1.0 m [Pyr14 ][TFSI] in PC at potential window above 3 V, an endothermic peak was observed only at the negative electrode owing to the decomposition of PC. Third, for both neat and diluted [Pyr14 ][TFSI] electrolytes, the irreversible heat generation rate increased with increasing potential window and exceeded Joule heating. This was attributed to the effect of potential-dependent charge redistribution resistance. A further increase in the irreversible heat generation rate was observed for the largest potential windows owing to the degradation of the PC solvent. Finally, for both types of electrolyte, the reversible heat generation rate increased with increasing potential window because of the increase in the amount of ion adsorbed/desorbed at the electrode/electrolyte interface.

Wearable and portable self-powered units have stimulated considerable attention in both the scientific and technological realms. However, their innovative development is still limited by inefficient bulky connections between functional modules, incompatible energy storage systems with poor cycling stability, and real safety concerns. Herein, we demonstrate a flexible solar-charging integrated unit based on the design of printed magnesium ion aqueous asymmetric supercapacitors. This power unit exhibits excellent mechanical robustness, high photo-charging cycling stability (98.7% capacitance retention after 100 cycles), excellent overall energy conversion and storage efficiency (ηoverall = 17.57%), and outstanding input current tolerance. In addition, the Mg ion quasi-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors show high energy density up to 13.1 mWh cm−3 via pseudocapacitive ion storage as investigated by an operando X-ray diffraction technique. The findings pave a practical route toward the design of future self-powered systems affording favorable safety, long life, and high energy., Wearable self-powered electronics receive considerable attention, but development is hindered by bulky designs, energy storage systems, and safety issues. Summary We have developed a synthetic approach to graphene nanoribbons by using butadiyne-containing monomers that are initially converted to polydiacetylenes via topochemical polymerization in the crystal. Subsequent aromatization of the isolated polydiacetylenes at surprisingly mild temperatures affords graphene nanoribbons ∼1.36 nm in width with a 1.4 eV bandgap. These transformations take place solely in the solid state, in contrast to published on-surface or in-solution methods. This synthetic approach is well suited for electronic-device fabrication processes because it requires only UV light or heating and no external chemical reagents.

The search for new ultraincompressible, superhard materials has been performed largely through trial and error. Despite the difficulties in synthesizing such materials, interest in this field has blossomed with recent experimental and theoretical results. Such progress has led to the development of superhard metal borides, ultraincompressible nitrides, and strong carbides. Our previous parameters of high electron density and high covalent bond density had served us well in synthesizing ultraincompressible, superhard metals, but after a decade of research, a more detailed understanding is needed. By studying the origin of strength from previously discovered incompressible, hard materials, we hope to gain new insight into this rapidly growing field. In particular, we propose a focus on bonding and structure to understand why some materials are ultraincompressible and superhard.

In tungsten monoboride (WB), the boron atoms are linked in parallel serpentine arrays, with tungsten atoms in between. This lattice is metallic, unlike conventional covalent superhard materials such as diamond or cubic boron nitride. By selectively substituting tungsten atoms with tantalum, the Vickers hardness can be increased to 42.8 GPa, creating a new superhard metal.

In this paper, we present a new synthetic route to produce optically active nanofibers of poly[2-(sec-butyl) aniline] (PSBA). Optically active PSBA nanofibers were produced by in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of a racemic monomer, (±)-2-sec-buthylaniline, in the presence of 1.5 M (+)- or (−)-camphor sulfonic acid (HCSA) with a monomer concentration of 0.025 M at 0 °C. The mirror-imaged circular dichroism spectra of both PSBA/(+)HCSA and PSBA/(−)HCSA show that the two polymers are optically active enantiomers, and in this condition, the chemical oxidation of 2SBA is enantioselective polymerization. The produced polymer has a uniform nanofibrillar morphology with an average diameter of 55 nm according to scanning electron microscopy and a number average molecular weight of 4680 g/mol as determined by gel permeation chromatography.

Understanding different bonding environments in various metal borides provides insight into their structures and physical properties. Polycrystalline aluminum diboride (AlB2) samples have been synthesized and compared both with a commercial sample and with the literature. One issue that arose is the relative ease with which boron-rich and aluminum deficient phases of aluminum borides can be presented in AlB2. Here, we report 27Al, 11B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and first-principles calculations on AlB2 in order to shed light on these different bonding environments at the atomic level and compare the structural and electronic properties of the products of different preparations. Along with the aforementioned, the present study also takes an in-depth look at the nature of the 11B and 27Al nuclear spin–lattice relaxation recovery data for the AlB2 and other superhard materials. The nuclear spin–lattice relaxation has been measured for a static sample and with magic-angle spinning. The combination of NMR and band structure calculations highlights the synthetic challenges with superhard materials.

Capacitors. Open up your computer and they stick out like rocks on a sandy beach. They're the one kind of electronic device that never made it to Lilliput. If they finally obeyed Moore's Law by squeezing themselves down to the microscale, it would make life a lot easier for electronics engineers.

Supercapacitors now play an important role in the progress of hybrid and electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and military and space applications. There is a growing demand in developing hybrid supercapacitor systems to overcome the energy density limitations of the current generation of carbon-based supercapacitors. Here, we demonstrate 3D high-performance hybrid supercapacitors and microsupercapacitors based on graphene and MnO2 by rationally designing the electrode microstructure and combining active materials with electrolytes that operate at high voltages. This results in hybrid electrodes with ultrahigh volumetric capacitance of over 1,100 F/cm(3). This corresponds to a specific capacitance of the constituent MnO2 of 1,145 F/g, which is close to the theoretical value of 1,380 F/g. The energy density of the full device varies between 22 and 42 Wh/l depending on the device configuration, which is superior to those of commercially available double-layer supercapacitors, pseudocapacitors, lithium-ion capacitors, and hybrid supercapacitors tested under the same conditions and is comparable to that of lead acid batteries. These hybrid supercapacitors use aqueous electrolytes and are assembled in air without the need for expensive "dry rooms" required for building today's supercapacitors. Furthermore, we demonstrate a simple technique for the fabrication of supercapacitor arrays for high-voltage applications. These arrays can be integrated with solar cells for efficient energy harvesting and storage systems.

Superhard metals are of interest as possible replacements with enhanced properties over the metal carbides commonly used in cutting, drilling, and wear-resistant tooling. Of the superhard metals, the highest boride of tungsten--often referred to as WB4 and sometimes as W(1-x)B3--is one of the most promising candidates. The structure of this boride, however, has never been fully resolved, despite the fact that it was discovered in 1961--a fact that severely limits our understanding of its structure-property relationships and has generated increasing controversy in the literature. Here, we present a new crystallographic model of this compound based on refinement against time-of-flight neutron diffraction data. Contrary to previous X-ray-only structural refinements, there is strong evidence for the presence of interstitial arrangements of boron atoms and polyhedral bonding. The formation of these polyhedral--slightly distorted boron cuboctahedra--appears to be dependent upon the defective nature of the tungsten-deficient metal sublattice. This previously unidentified structure type has an intermediary relationship between MB2 and MB12 type boride polymorphs. Manipulation of the fractionally occupied metal and boron sites may provide insight for the rational design of new superhard metals.

Using nanoparticles, instead of microparticles, as active electrode materials in lithium ion batteries could provide a solution to slow charging rates due to long ion diffusion pathways in conventional bulk materials. In this work, we present a new strategy for the synthesis of high purity lithium nickel manganese oxide (LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4) nanoparticles as a high-voltage cathode. A sonochemical reaction is used to synthesize nickel hydroxide and manganese dioxide nanoparticles followed by a solid-state reaction with lithium hydroxide. The product shows a single spinel phase and uniform spherical nano-particles under the appropriate calcination conditions. The LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 exhibits a high voltage plateau at about 4.7–4.9 V in the charge/discharge process and delivers a discharge capacity of more than 140 mA h g−1 and excellent cycling performance with 99% capacity retention after 70 cycles. The synthesized nano-particles show improved electrochemical performance at high rates. This electrode delivers a power density as high as 26.1 kW kg−1 at a discharge rate of 40 C. This power performance is about one order of magnitude higher than traditional lithium ion batteries. These findings may lead to a new generation of high power lithium ion batteries that can be recharged in minutes instead of hours.

A novel polyfluoranthene (PFA) exhibiting strong visual fluorescence emission, a highly amplified quenching effect, and widely controllable electrical conductivity is synthesized by the direct cationic oxidative polymerization of fluoranthene in a dynamic interface between n-hexane and nitromethane containing fluoranthene and FeCl3, respectively. A full characterization of the molecular structure signifies that the PFAs have a degree of polymerization from 22–50 depending on the polymerization conditions. A polymerization mechanism at the interface of the hexane/nitromethane biphasic system is proposed. The conductivity of the PFA is tunable from 6.4 × 10−6 to 0.074 S cm−1 by doping with HCl or iodine. The conductivity can be significantly enhanced to 150 S cm−1 by heat treatment at 1100 °C in argon. A PFA-based chemosensor shows a highly selective sensitivity for Fe3+ detection which is unaffected by other common metal ions. The detection of Fe3+ likely involves the synergistic effect of well-distributed π-conjugated electrons throughout the PFA helical chains that function as both the fluorophore and the receptor units.

Strongly fluorescence-emitting oligofluoranthene nanorods efficiently synthesized by template-free oligomerization of fluoranthene in nitromethane demonstrate tunable conductivity and porous carbon formability., Strongly fluorescence-emitting oligofluoranthene (OFA) nanorods are readily synthesized by a direct template-free chemical oxidative oligomerization of fluoranthene in nitromethane containing ferric chloride as an oxidant. The OFAs likely consist of five fluoranthene units containing cyclic pentamers with crystalline order and tunable electrical conductivity across 12 orders of magnitude. The OFA nanorods are heat-resistant materials and efficient precursors for macroporous carbon materials with high carbon yield in argon at 1100 °C. In particular, the optimal ring-like pentamer shows 12.2 times stronger cyan fluorescence-emission than recognized highly fluorescent fluoranthene under the same conditions, which makes the OFAs into ideal strong fluorescent emitters, tunable conductors, and high carbon-yield precursors for the preparation of sensors and carbon materials. These findings demonstrate an advance in the direct synthesis of oligomers from fused-ring aromatic hydrocarbons and provide a potential direction to optimize the synthesis and functionalities of wholly aromatic nanomaterials.

Expanding the world of 2D materials Two-dimensional (2D) materials have a wide variety of potential applications in the electronics industry. However, certain compositions of 2D materials are difficult to obtain owing to the challenges in exfoliating thin sheets from bulk crystals. Zavabeti et al. exploited liquid metals to synthesize 2D Ga 2 O 3 , HfO 2 , Gd 2 O 3 , and Al 2 O 3 . The 2D sheets appear as a surface layer in gallium-based liquid metals after the Hf, Gd, or Al is dissolved into the bulk alloy. The 2D oxide that appears on the surface is the oxide with the lowest energy, suggesting that it should be possible to make other 2D oxides by using the same process. Science , this issue p. 332
