Sigmund Freud was strongly influenced by Miguel de Cervantes as shown in letters between Freud and a school friend. Freud's psychoanalytic narrative theory closely parallels Cervantes' fiction. 'The Dogs' Dialogue' is specifically mentioned in Freud's letters but other Cervantes works contain elements of psychoanalytic theory in that they take advantage of people's willingness to talk to others to develop characters. Though not articulated in a counseling environment, the stories develop dialogue as a source of mutual illumination.
