Abstract

We study a massive Thirring-like model in 2-dimensional space-time, which contains fermions with arbitrary number (N) of different species. This model is an extension of that of a previous paper, where we have considered two-species case. By this extension we expect that we can expose more general structures of this kind of model. We obtain the equivalent boson model with N species to our fermion model. We find that the coupling constant must be set in some regions in order for the model to be physically sensible. It seems hard to find such regions from direct obsavation of the original fermion model. We also find that for specific values of the coupling constant some of the boson fields disappear from the system. Abstract

This model is a field theoretical version of the quantum mechanical model originally proposed by Gl\"{o}ckle, Nogami and Fukui, where different fermions interact with each other through $\delta$-function potentials. We derive a corresponding boson model by the bosonization technique in the path integral formulation. This is a simple but non-trivial extension of the freedom of the bosonization technique. Operator correspondences between fermion and boson fields are given. One of these could not be realistically expected from the naive correspondence of the original single-species models. It is essential for this point that in our model fermions of the same kind do not interact with each other directly. We find that for a specific value of the coupling constant, one boson field becomes free while the other is a Sine-Gordon field. Abstract

Metal-based powder bed fusion with a laser beam (PBF-LB/M) can be applied to fabricate high-accuracy structures compared with other metal additive manufacturing (AM) methods. The rapid solidification of metal powder formed by laser irradiation introduces heterogeneous residual stress, which causes deformation and cracking of the structure. This, in turn, results in the deterioration of quality. In this study, the influence of the laser scan strategy on the residual stress distribution and warpage of the structure was investigated. Using maraging steel powder with an average particle size of 32.5 μm, the structures were constructed using several laser scan strategies at a wavelength of 1070 nm. The residual stress distributions on the surface of the structures were measured by the cosα method by applying X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, the warpage of the reverse side of the substrate as a foundation of the structure was measured by a stylus-type surface roughness measuring instrument. The results clarified that the structures constructed by unidirectional scan directions had a tensile residual stress that was generated parallel to the laser scan direction. Meanwhile, the compressive residual stress was generated perpendicular to the laser scan direction. The large warpage was aligned with the laser scan direction and tensile residual stress. When the laser scan direction was rotated by 90° for each layer, the residual stress distribution was generated with a cruciform shape. It was indicated that this residual distribution was caused by a laser scan on the top surface and a lower layer. Open in new tab Download slide OBJECTIVES There are no data on long-term outcomes beyond 30 years after the Glenn procedure without the subsequent Fontan procedure in patients with single-ventricle physiology. Hence, this study aimed to clarify the very long-term outcomes of these patients. METHODS This single-centre, retrospective cohort study investigated the clinical outcomes of patients with single-ventricle physiology who underwent the Glenn procedure between 1970 and 1999. Those who underwent the subsequent Fontan procedure were excluded. The primary outcome was all-cause death. The secondary outcome was a composite of all-cause death, arrhythmic events, neurological events or infective endocarditis. The prognostic factors associated with the long-term outcomes were also evaluated. RESULTS In total, 36 patients were enrolled (median age at Glenn procedure: 6.2 years, 56% male). During a median follow-up of 17.6 years (interquartile range: 6.1–33.4), 21 patients died and 29 experienced the composite outcome. The 20-, 30- and 40-year overall survival after the Glenn procedure was 51.2%, 44.4% and 40.3%, respectively. The 20-, 30- and 40-year event-free survival was 36.0%, 25.5% and 14.5%, respectively. Patients with dominant left ventricular morphology had better overall survival than those with dominant right ventricular morphology (hazard ratio: 0.24, 95% confidence interval: 0.08–0.76, P  = 0.014). None of the patients had liver cirrhosis but 1 had protein-losing enteropathy. CONCLUSIONS The 40-year overall survival after the Glenn procedure without the subsequent Fontan procedure in patients with single-ventricle physiology was 40.3%. Boundary integral equations based on direct differentiation process calculate the design sensitivity of stresses and displacements for three-dimensional structures. Abstract

Before entering host cells, herpes simplex virus-1 uses its envelope glycoprotein B to bind paired immunoglobulin-like type 2 receptor alpha (PILR alpha) on immune cells. PILR alpha belongs to the Siglec (sialic acid (SA)-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin)- like family, members of which bind SA. PILR alpha is the only Siglec member to recognize not only the sialylated O-linked sugar T antigen (sTn) but also its attached peptide region. We previously determined the crystal structure of PILR alpha complexed with the sTn-linked glycopeptide of glycoprotein B, revealing the simultaneous recognition of sTn and peptide by the receptor. However, the contribution of each glycopeptide component to PILR alpha binding was largely unclear. Here, we chemically synthesized glycopeptide derivatives and determined the thermodynamic parameters of their interaction with PILR alpha. We show that glycopeptides with different sugar units linking SA and peptides (i.e. "GlcNAc-type" and "deoxy-GlcNAc-type" glycopeptides) have lower affinity and more enthalpy-driven binding than the wild type (i.e. GalNAc-type glycopeptide). The crystal structures of PILR alpha complexed with these glycopeptides highlighted the importance of stereochemical positioning of the O4 atom of the sugar moiety. These results provide insights both for understanding the unique O-glycosylated peptide recognition by the PILR alpha and for the rational design of herpes simplex virus-1 entry inhibitors.

Abstract

Braided carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) can be employed in the construction of pressurized vessels to increase performance and reduce overall weight. However, owing to the complex braiding structures resulting from the braiding process, an analysis of the elastic modulus is important as it affects the hoop stress on the pressure vessel. In this study, braided preformed CFRP constructed on a steel cylinder subjected to internal pressure was experimentally investigated using a simple approach that involved estimating the elastic modulus and hoop stress. Five types of braided preformed CFRP with different braiding angles and number of applied layers were analyzed. The elastic modulus and hoop stress can be estimated from these measurements of the internal pressure. The differences in the braided structures result in different strain values and affect the elastic modulus. High braiding angles tend to be more stable against high internal pressure, and exhibit small strain differences and high elastic modulus in the hoop direction. Similar results were observed when additional layers were applied. Increasing the braiding angle and the number of layers can increase the average elastic modulus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

金沢大学附属病院設計製造技術研究所, 計算生体力学によって生み出された技術は,研究だけでなく臨床における診断や治療に応用可能な技術として,その可能性を広げている.整形外科の分野においても,計算力学と医療画像処理の融合により,個々の患者の症状を反映した患者別の骨体力学解析が実用化しつつある.例えば,X線CT画像から骨の有限要素モデルを作成して力学解析を行うソフトウェアが開発されている.これにより,従来は多くの日数が必要であった骨の有限要素モデルの作成が数時間で可能となった.ここでは,そのようなソフトウェアを利用して,骨粗鬆症脊椎の有限要素解析を患者別に行い,骨粗鬆症における脊椎圧迫骨折の危険性を評価する方法について解説する.

Abstract

In the path-integral framework we study a massive Thirring-like model in 2-dimensional space-time, which contains fermions with arbitrary number (N) of different species. This model is an extension of that of a previous paper (the Bukhvostov-Lipatov model), where we have considered two-species case. By this extensron we expect that we can expose more general structures of this kind of model. We obtain the equivalent boson model with N species to our fermion model by mass perturbation expansion. We see that the boson Lagrangian corresponds with the one which is directly obtained from the original fermion Lagrangian by Coleman's correspondences of free fermion bilinear operators with boson fields.
