Background and objective: In acute kidney injury (AKI), a strong inflammatory component is activated in response to the renal damage, and one of the main mediators behind this process is the pro-inflammatory interleukin 6 or IL-6. Beside to this phenomenon, there are also alterations in different components of mineral metabolism, such as those dependent on fibroblast growth factor (FGF)23 and the anti-ageing cofactor klotho. The aim of this work was to explore the association between renal function and systemic levels of IL-6, as well as FGF23 and klotho in the early stages of AKI, analysing the predictive capacity of IL-6 in early mortality associated with AKI. Material and methods: Plasma levels of IL-6, klotho and FGF23 were analysed in samples from 28 patients with AKI and related to renal function on hospital admission, and after 24 and 72 h. In addition, the predictive capacity of IL-6 on AKI-associated mortality was analysed at the three study time points. In an experimental nephrotoxic -AKI mouse model, systemic IL-6 and FGF23 values were also analysed 24 and 72 h after induction of kidney damage, as well as in mice overexpressing the anti-ageing protein, klotho. Results: Systemic IL-6 levels increased in AKI patients, especially in hospital admission time, and decreased in parallel with improving renal function. At the same time as IL-6 values increased, there was an increase in FGF23 and a decrease in klotho levels, with a significant and positive correlation between IL-6 and FGF23 levels. In addition, we obtained that systemic IL-6 levels were a good predictor of mortality in these patients, with an area under the curve equal to one at 72 h after AKI. In the experimental mouse AKI model, we also observed an increase in plasma levels in both IL-6 and FGF23 after 24 h of kidney damage. Nevertheless, in transgenic mice overexpressing klotho, there was no such increase in any of them. Conclusions: There is an association between renal damage and increased levels of IL-6 and FGF23 in patients with AKI, especially on hospital admission time. Moreover, IL-6 levels are able to predict mortality in these patients, being a promising prognostic biomarker at any study time with a strong prediction at 72 h after patient admission. Maintaining adequate klotho levels could prevent the IL-6 mediated inflammatory response and therefore also reduce the degree and severity of renal damage after AKI. Resumen: Antecedentes y objetivo: En un fracaso renal agudo (FRA) se activa un fuerte componente inflamatorio como respuesta al daño renal, y uno de los principales mediadores de este proceso es la interleuquina pro-inflamatoria 6 o IL-6. A su vez, ligado a este fenómeno también se producen alteraciones en los distintos componentes del metabolismo mineral como son aquellos dependientes del factor de crecimiento de fibroblasto (FGF)23 y el cofactor anti-envejecimiento klotho. El objetivo de este trabajo fue explorar la asociación entre la función renal y los niveles sistémicos tanto de IL-6, así como de FGF23 y klotho, en las etapas tempranas de un FRA, analizando la capacidad predictora de IL-6 en la mortalidad temprana asociada al FRA. Materiales y métodos: Se analizaron los niveles plasmáticos de IL-6, klotho y FGF23 en muestras procedentes de 28 pacientes con FRA, y se relacionaron con la función renal en el momento del ingreso hospitalario, y después de 24 y 72 horas. Además, se analizó la capacidad predictora de IL-6 sobre la mortalidad asociada al FRA en los tres tiempos del estudio. En un modelo experimental de FRA nefrotóxico en ratón, se analizaron también los valores sistémicos de IL-6 y FGF23 tras las 24 y 72 horas desde la inducción del daño renal, así como en ratones que sobreexpresan la proteína anti-envejecimiento, klotho. Resultados: Los niveles de IL-6 aumentaron en los pacientes con FRA, especialmente en el momento del ingreso hospitalario, y fueron disminuyendo en paralelo a la mejora de la función renal. Al mismo tiempo que el aumento de IL-6, se produjo el incremento sistémico de FGF23 y el descenso de klotho, existiendo una correlación significativa y positiva entre los niveles de IL-6 y FGF23. Además, obtuvimos que los niveles sistémicos de IL-6 son un buen predictor de la mortalidad en los pacientes, con un área bajo la curva igual a uno tras las 72 horas desde el diagnóstico de FRA. En el modelo de FRA experimental en ratón, observamos también un incremento en los niveles plasmáticos tanto de IL-6 como de FGF23, tras las 24 horas del daño renal. Sin embargo, en los ratones transgénicos con sobreexpresión de klotho, no se produjo tal incremento en ninguna de ellas. Conclusiones: Existe una asociación entre el daño renal, el incremento de la IL-6 y de FGF23 en pacientes con FRA, especialmente en el momento del diagnóstico. Además, los niveles elevados de IL-6 predicen la mortalidad de estos pacientes a corto y medio plazo, considerándose un buen biomarcador pronóstico con una predicción total tras las 72 horas desde el diagnóstico del FRA. Mantener unos niveles adecuados de klotho podría prevenir la respuesta inflamatoria mediada por la IL-6 y por lo tanto también aminorar el grado y severidad del daño renal tras un FRA.

Un debate vigente, en el mundo académico y político, es el relacionado al cuestionamiento hacia el modelo de Estado vigente en el Paraguay desde hace décadas, modelo que hasta hoy en día, independientemente al signo político que asumió la gestión, no pudo ser transformado, más bien persistió a lo largo del tiempo. El presente artículo, tiene como fin realizar un recuento histórico descriptivo, de la conformación del Estado paraguayo y sus características vigentes hasta el fin del proceso de cambios liderado por el gobierno de Fernando Lugo. En un primer momento, realiza un recorrido por el periodo histórico pos guerra grande, que se conoce como el periodo de “re-construcción” del Estado paraguayo, luego de su devastación durante la guerra de la triple alianza. La famosa “reconstrucción”, tuvo como principal punta de lanza, el armaje de un nuevo Estado diferente al anterior, conformado desde la independencia hasta la guerra grande como un Estado independiente y con amplia influencia en la economía paraguaya. Más adelante el lector de encontrara con un repaso sobre los principales acontecimientos y eventos del siglo XX, que incluyeron en la consolidación de ese Estado conformado desde 1870, y asentando algunas de sus características. Finalmente nos detendremos a caracterizar el Estado paraguayo pos-dictadura y como este se mantuvo con la estructura clientelar, funcional a los intereses de las clases dominantes, pese a los grandes programas en la transición democrática. El artículo acaba con un breve análisis del intento de transformación mínimo del Estado paraguayo, que ocurrió durante el gobierno de Fernando Lugo y su amplia coalición opositora.

BackgroundSubstrate-based ablation has become a successful technique for ventricular tachycardia (VT) ablation. High-density (HD) mapping catheters provide high-resolution electroanatomical maps and better discrimination of local abnormal electrograms. The HD Grid Mapping Catheter is an HD catheter with the ability to map orthogonal signals on top of conventional bipolar signals, which could provide better discrimination of the arrhythmic substrate. On the other hand, conventional mapping techniques, such as activation mapping, when possible, help to identify the isthmus of the tachycardia.AimThe purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes after using two different VT ablation strategies: one based on extensive mapping with the HD Grid Mapping Catheter, including VT isthmus analysis, and the other based on pure substrate ablation.MethodsForty consecutive patients undergoing VT ablation with extensive HD mapping method in the hospital clinic (November 2018–November 2019) were included. Clinical outcomes were compared with a historical cohort of 26 consecutive patients who underwent ablation using a scar dechanneling technique before 2018.ResultsThe density of mapping points was higher in the extensive mapping group (2370.24 ± 920.78 vs. 576.45 ± 294.46; p < 0.001). After 1 year of follow-up, VT recurred in 18.4% of patients in the extensive mapping group vs. 34.6% of patients in the historical control group (p = 0.14), with a significantly greater reduction of VT burden: VT episodes (81.7 ± 7.79 vs. 43.4 ± 19.9%, p < 0.05), antitachycardia pacing (99.45 ± 2.29 vs. 33.9 ± 102.5%, p < 0.001), and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) shocks (99 ± 4.5 vs. 64.7 ± 59.9%, p = 0.02).ConclusionThe use of a method based on extensive mapping with the HD Grid Mapping Catheter and VT isthmus analysis allows better discrimination of the arrhythmic substrate and could be associated with a greater decrease in VT burden.

The use of late gadolinium enhancement magnetic resonance imaging (LGE-MRI) in arrhythmia ablation is increasing due to the capacity to detect, quantify and characterize cardiac fibrosis both in atrium and ventricle. Catheter ablation has become a standard treatment for arrhythmias, and LGE-MRI has demonstrated to be a useful tool to plan and guide ablation. Furthermore, recent studies have proved the usefulness in substrate analysis and postablation evaluation. This review will analyze the application and the current role of LGE-MRI to improve strategies for the two main cardiac arrhythmias: Atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.

Catheter ablation of ventricular tachycardia has demonstrated its important role in the treatment of ventricular tachycardia in patients with structural cardiomyopathy. Conventional mapping techniques used to define the critical isthmus, such as activation mapping and entrainment, are limited by the non-inducibility of the clinical tachycardia or its poor hemodynamic tolerance. To overcome these limitations, a voltage mapping strategy based on bipolar electrograms peak to peak analysis was developed, but a low specificity (30%) for VT isthmus has been described with this approach. Functional mapping strategy relies on the analysis of the characteristics of the electrograms but also their propagation patterns and their response to extra-stimulus or alternative pacing wavefronts to define the targets for ablation. With this review, we aim to summarize the different functional mapping strategies described to date to identify ventricular arrhythmic substrate in patients with structural heart disease.

Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF)-23 is a phosphaturic hormone involved in mineral bone metabolism that helps control phosphate homeostasis and reduces 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D synthesis. Recent data have highlighted the relevant direct FGF-23 effects on the myocardium, and high plasma levels of FGF-23 have been associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes in humans, such as heart failure and arrhythmias. Therefore, FGF-23 has emerged as a novel biomarker of cardiovascular risk in the last decade. Indeed, experimental data suggest FGF-23 as a direct mediator of cardiac hypertrophy development, cardiac fibrosis and cardiac dysfunction via specific myocardial FGF receptor (FGFR) activation. Therefore, the FGF-23/FGFR pathway might be a suitable therapeutic target for reducing the deleterious effects of FGF-23 on the cardiovascular system. More research is needed to fully understand the intracellular FGF-23-dependent mechanisms, clarify the downstream pathways and identify which could be the most appropriate targets for better therapeutic intervention. This review updates the current knowledge on both clinical and experimental studies and highlights the evidence linking FGF-23 to cardiovascular events. The aim of this review is to establish the specific role of FGF-23 in the heart, its detrimental effects on cardiac tissue and the possible new therapeutic opportunities to block these effects.

Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) is associated with cardiac damage and causes injury to multiple cell types. We aimed to investigate the role of oxLDL in ventricular stress. We first examined the association between circulating oxLDL and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), a marker of myocardial stress, in young subjects (30–50 years) with or without stable coronary artery disease (SCAD). oxLDL and NT-proBNP were significantly higher in subjects at high cardiovascular risk (CVR) than in subjects at low CVR and were associated independently of traditional CVR factors and C-reactive protein. Furthermore, the levels of oxLDL and NT-proBNP were significantly lower in subjects with SCAD than in peers at high CVR. To determine the intracellular mechanisms involved in the cardiac effects of oxLDL, we analyzed the in vitro effect of oxLDL on intracellular Ca2+ handling in adult rat ventricular cardiomyocytes using confocal microscopy. Acute challenge of adult ventricular cardiomyocytes to oxLDL reduced systolic Ca2+ transients and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ load. Moreover, diastolic spontaneous Ca2+ leak increased significantly after acute exposure to oxLDL. Thus, we demonstrate that oxLDL associates with NT-proBNP in young subjects, and can directly induce Ca2+ mishandling in adult ventricular cardiomyoyctes, predisposing cardiomyocytes to cardiac dysfunction and arrhythmogenicity.

El fósforo (P) es el principal limitante en suelos ácidos tropicales por lo que es importante conocer el destino del P del fertilizante en el corto y largo plazo. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar los cambios que se producen en las formas inorgánicas y orgánicas del P por el agregado de este elemento. Se planteó como hipótesis que en condiciones de suelos altamente meteorizados el P agregado se incorpora en el corto plazo a las formas inorgánicas y orgánicas lábiles; luego de un año pasa a los reservorios más resistentes. Se seleccionaron Alfisoles, Ultisoles y Oxisoles de la provincia de Misiones donde se obtuvieron muestras de los horizontes superficiales para el establecimiento de un ensayo en invernáculo. Se aplicaron tres tratamientos de P con tres repeticiones. Luego de un período de estabilización, se tomaron muestras periódicamente hasta el año, para el análisis de la fracciones de P por el método de Hedley modificado por Sattell y Morris. Las condiciones de incubación, con fluctuaciones en las condiciones de humedad, provocaron incrementos en las fracciones Pi-NaHCO3, Pi-NaOH y Po-NaOHus para los tres órdenes, a partir de la disminución, principalmente, del Po-NaHCO3 y de las fracciones residuales. El fertilizante agregado en los primeros 120 días incrementó las fracciones inorgánicas lábiles y moderadamente lábiles (Pi- NaHCO3 y Pi-NaOH). A partir de los 60 días, el Pi-NaOHus comenzó a manifestar el efecto de las distintas dosis de P, alcanzando su máximo valor a los 120 días, pasando a partir de ese momento a ser fuente del elemento agregado. El P proveniente del fertilizante, que al principio de la experiencia se ubicaba en las fracciones más lábiles, con el correr del tiempo pasó a formas más resistentes, alcanzando los valores máximos a los 360 días.Phosphorus (P) is the main limiting factor in highly weathered tropical soils. Therefore, it is important to know the P fertilizer fate in the short and long term. The aim of this work was to evaluate the changes that take place in the inorganic and organic forms of the soil-applied P. The hypothesis of this study is that P fertilizer is first incorporated into the most labile soil fractions and later it undergoes transformations to more resistant fractions. Soil samples were collected from the surface horizons Alfisols, Ultisols and Oxisols in Misiones (Argentina) and a greenhouse experiment was conducted with three P levels and three repetitions. After a period of stabilization, samples were taken periodically for a year and were analyzed for P fractions by the Hedley method modified by Sattell and Morris. The moisture content fluctuated during incubation, causing increases in the Pi-NaHCO3, Pi-NaOH and Po-NaOHus fractions for the three orders,corresponding to decreases mainly of Po-NaHCO3 and of the residual fractions. The fertilizer added in the first 120 days increased labile and moderately labile inorganic fractions (NaHCO3-Pi and NaOH-Pi). From incubation day 60, Sonicate-Pi fractions began to show the P rate effects, reaching the maximum value at day 120 and becoming from that moment a source of the added P. P from fertilizer, which was found in the most labile fractions at the start of the experiment, was converted to more resistant forms through time, reaching the highest values after 360 days of incubation.

En suelos ácidos de trópicos y subtrópicos, caracterizados por una baja disponibilidad de P para las plantas, el papel de las fosfatasas ácidas en la mineralización del P orgánico es fundamental, constituyendo una variable promisoria para estimar la calidad del suelo. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar la actividad de la fosfatasa ácida en Oxisoles bajo uso tabacalero, como indicador sensible de calidad. En la provincia de Misiones ubicada al nordeste de la República Argentina, se estableció un ensayo sobre Eutrudoxes Ródicos, familia arcillosa fina, hipertérmica, aplicándose un diseño con cuatro bloques completos aleatorizados. Se establecieron 2 tratamientos: selva subtropical (Sv) y uso tabacalero (Ta). Se tomaron muestras compuestas a 3 profundidades: 0-10; 10-20; 20-30 cm. Se determinaron las siguientes variables: actividad de la fosfatasa ácida (APA), pH, contenido de arcilla, carbono orgánico edáfico (CO), nitrógeno total (N), fósforo asimilable (P), materia orgánica particulada (MOP), y respiración del suelo (RES). En los casos estudiados, la APA fue mayor en los primeros diez centímetros de suelo, y fue disminuyendo con el aumento de la profundidad del perfil, en estrecha relación con los contenidos orgánicos del suelo. El 70% de la variabilidad de la APA se explicó por el nitrógeno total, íntimamente relacionado con la materia orgánica del suelo (pSoil biological parameters are of great value as sensitive indicators of transformations occurring under different uses and management practices (Mijangos et al., 2006). The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity of the acid phosphatase enzyme in Oxisols under tobacco cropping. The experimental design was in randomized complete blocks, with two treatments: subtropical rainforest (Sv) and tobacco cropping (Ta) (Nicotiana tabacum L.). Soil samples were taken from 0-10, 10 -20 and 20 -30 cm-deep layers. The variables measured were: APA, pH, clay content, total nitrogen (N), available phosphorus (P), respiration (RES), particulate organic matter (MOP) and soil organic carbon (CO). The soils used in the study showed an acid reaction. Organic carbon and N contents were higher in soils under the subtropical rainforest than under tobacco cropping. Con el objetivo de determinar las fracciones de fósforo predominantes en un Entisol, un Alfisol y un Vertisol y analizar los cambios que se producen por el uso citrícola, arrocero y pastoril, respectivamente; se seleccionaron tres suelos con cultivos fertilizados representativos de las actividades productivas más importantes económicamente para la provincia de Corrientes. Se realizó un muestreo aleatorio simple de dos tratamientos con cinco repeticiones en cada orden: 1) Entisol con cobertura natural y monte citrícola, 2) Alfisol con cobertura natural y con arrocera y 3) Vertisol con cobertura natural y pastura (Setaria sp.). Se obtuvieron muestras compuestas de cada repetición a una profundidad de 0-15 cm. Las muestras fueron sometidas al análisis de: textura, pH, carbono orgánico, calcio, magnesio, carbonato, hierro y aluminio en oxalato, fósforo asimilable (P Bray I) y se realizó el fraccionamiento de fósforo (P) según el método propuesto por Hedley et al. (1982) modificado por Sattell y Morris (1992). El P total (Pte) se consideró como resultado de la suma de las fracciones. De los órdenes estudiados el contenido de fósforo total fue menor para el Entisol (71,46 mg P kg-1 de suelo), seguido del Alfisol (126,84 mg P kg-1de suelo) y por último el Vertisol (142,28 mg P kg-1de suelo), predominando la fracción de fósforo orgánico en hidróxido de sodio con un porcentaje de 53%, 54% y 48% respectivamente para cada orden. Con la incorporación del citrus fertilizado en el Entisol hubo una disminución del fósforo fácilmente disponible, siendo las fracciones moderadamente lábiles y las más resistentes el reservorio del fertilizante agregado. El cultivo de arroz bajo inundación produjo la disminución de la mayoría de las formas de fósforo en el Alfisol, aumentando solo el fósforo inorgánico en microagregados y el orgánico residual. La implantación de Setaria sp. con fertilización en el Vertisol solo produjo aumento significativo en el fósforo orgánico ocluido en los microagregados.The objectives of this study were to determine the phosphorus fractions in Entisolls, Alfisolls and Vertisolls and to analyze the effects of the production system employed (citrus, pasture and rice) on this fractionation. Three soils from fields that mainly contribute to the economy of Corrientes were selected. A simple random sampling of two treatments and five replicates was conducted in each soil order, each replicate were a composed samples from 0-15 cm depth. Samples were selected from: 1) Entisoll: native grassland vs. citrus field, 2) Alfisoll: native grassland vs. rice crop, 3) Vertisoll: native grassland vs. Setaria sp. pasture. The parameters analysed were: texture, pH, orgaic carbon, calcium, magnesium, carbonate, iron and aluminium in oxalate, available phosphorus (P Bray I) and phosphorus (P) fractionation by Hedley et al. (1982) Method modified by Sattell and Morris (1992). Total P was calculated as the total addition of each phosphorous fraction. The smallest total P detected was observed in Entisolls (71.46 mg P kg-1soil), followed by Alfisolls (126,84 mgP kg-1 soil) and Vertisolls (142.28 mgP kg-1soil). The most predominant fraction of total P was the organic phosphorus in sodium hydroxide (53%, 54% y 48% respectively for each order). Fertilization decreased available P, but increased moderately labile and resistant phosphorus fractions in Entisolls. Only P fraction from inorganic phosphorus in microaggregates and residual organic in Alfisolls were increased under rice crop production. The implantation of Setaria sp. with fertilization in Vertisols raised the occluded organic phosphorus in the microaggregate fraction.

El objetivo de este estudio fue estimar el efecto del sistema de producción citrícola sobre algunas propiedades químicas y biológicas del suelo, a fin de obtener indicadores de calidad. Se estableció un ensayo con 2 tratamientos: selva subtropical (Sv) y uso citrícola (Ci. El diseño fue en bloques completamente aleatorizados. Se tomaron muestras compuestas de 0-10 cm de profundidad. Se determinaron: pH, carbono orgánico (CO), materia orgánica particulada (MOP), fósforo asimilable (P), nitrógeno total (Nt), nitrógeno potencialmente mineralizable (NPM), actividad de la fosfatasa ácida (APA), y respiración del suelo (RES) como variables de respuesta. El contenido promedio de CO fue mayor en la Sv (4,03 %) respecto al Ci (2,35%). A pesar del aporte de N al Citrus, el Nt y el Npm fueron mayores en la Sv. En la MOP y sus fracciones, se hallaron diferencias significativas presentando la Sv los mayores valores. El Nt explicó el 69% de la variancia de la APA y el CO el 61%: APA = 1.775 N 153,7 (r² = 0,.69). APA = 221 CO - 230 (r² = 0.61). La disminución producida por el uso citrícola revelaría que los atributos: CO, Nt, APA, NPM, MOP y RES, serían indicadores sensibles de la calidad del suelo.Knowledge about the impact of agricultural practices on soil quality is very important to plan the use and sustainable management of productive lands. Citrus cropping has recently acquired a significant economic importance in Misiones, Argentina. It is cultivated in different types of soils sensitive to erosion, like Oxisoles. The aim of this work was to determine the effect of citrus cropping on some chemical and biological soil quality indicators. The field experiment consisted of 2 treatments: subtropical rainforest (Sv) and citrus (Ci). In 0-10 cm samples the following parameters were measured: pH, organic carbon (OC), particulate organic matter (POM), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (P), acid phosphatase activity (APA), respiration (RES), and potentially mineralizable nitrogen (PMN). The comparisons of the mean treatments were carried out through Duncan´s Multiple Range Test (P < 0.05). The average OC content was higher in Sv (4.03 %) than in Ci (2.35). In spite of N addition to Citrus, TN and PMN were higher in Sv than in Ci. Sv showed the highest values (statistically different from Ci) in POM and its fractions. Nt accounted for 69% of the APA variance and the OC a 61%: APA = 1.775 TN 153.7 (r2 = 0.69). APA = 221 CO - 230 (r2 = 0.61). Obtained results showed that citrus cultivation decreases OC, TN, APA, PMN, POM and soil respiration, which accelerated soil degradation. These soil attributes should be considered as indicators to assess soil quality.

OBJETIVO: Determinar si anticuerpos séricos contra E4, E7 y Ras pueden ser utilizados como marcadores de lesiones tempranas del cérvix uterino asociadas al virus del papiloma humano. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Entre marzo de 1999 y abril de 2000 se realizó un estudio sero-epidemiológico de casos y controles en la clínica de displasias del Hospital General Doctor Gea González, en la Ciudad de México, en 116 muestras de suero para evaluar la presencia de anticuerpos anti-E4, E7 y Ras utilizando un ELISA de captura. Se estimaron razones de momios e intervalos de confianza de 95% RESULTADOS: Anticuerpos anti-E7 se asociaron a mujeres con lesiones NIC III, mientras que anticuerpos anti-E4 y anti-Ras fueron más frecuentes en lesiones NIC I-II. Al evaluar el perfil de anticuerpos que presentaron las mujeres, encontramos que a) anticuerpos contra dos proteínas predicen la existencia de una lesión NIC I-II, y b) la presencia de tres anticuerpos predicen una lesión NIC III. CONCLUSIONES: La detección de anticuerpos séricos contra E4, E7 y Ras en combinación con otras técnicas de diagnóstico, podrían ser de utilidad para detectar oportunamente a mujeres con lesiones tempranas asociadas al Virus del Papiloma Humano y en riesgo de desarrollar cáncer.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether serum antibodies anti-E4, E7 and Ras could be used as markers for early cervical lesions associated with HPV (human papillomavirus). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A seroepidemiological case-control study was conducted between March 1999 and April 2000 at the dysplasia clinic of Hospital General Doctor Gea Gonzalez, in Mexico City, to evaluate the presence of antibodies anti-E4, E7, and Ras through a sandwich ELISA. Analysis was done using odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: Anti-E7 antibodies were associated to women with CIN III lesions, while anti-E4 and Ras antibodies were strongly associated with CIN I-II lesions. The antibody profile of women with different cervical lesion showed that: a) the presence of antibodies against two proteins predicts the presence of CIN I-II lesions, and b) the presence of three antibodies predicts a CIN III lesion. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of serum antibodies against E4, E7 and Ras, together with other diagnostic techniques, could be useful for the timely detection of early uterine cervical lesions associated to HPV in women at risk of developing cancer.

Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron: determinar indicadores de calidad de suelo, desarrollar índices funcionales y aplicar índices utilizados en la bibliografía, a fin de evaluar su sensibilidad para detectar los cambios producidos por el desmonte y posterior uso agrícola en Oxisoles del departamento de Oberá (Misiones). Se empleó un diseño completamente al azar, con tres tratamientos: Selva (S), cultivo de maíz con labranza convencional (Zea mays L.) (M) y cultivo de Té (Camellia sinensis L.) (T). Se muestrearon 12 lotes por tratamiento a 0-0,10; 0,10-0,20 y 0,20-0,30 m. Las variables evaluadas fueron: respiración (RES), densidad aparente (Da), textura, pH, materia orgánica total (MO) y particulada (MOP), nitrógeno total (Nt) y potencialmente mineralizable (NPM). Se determinaron los índices: MOP/MO, NPM/Nt, NPM/MOP, MO/Li+Arc, MOP/RES y las relaciones de estratificación del carbono orgánico del suelo (COSr1, COSr2) y del potencial de mineralización del nitrógeno (NPMr1, NPMr2). Los resultados se analizaron mediante ANOVA, Test LSD (p < 0,05), y correlación de Pearson. Los indicadores: Da, RES, MO, Nt, y NPM y los índices NPM/Nt, MO/Li+Arc, NPM/MOP, IRC, IMC, COSr1, COSr2, permitieron diferenciar suelos bajo sistemas naturales de cultivados. La Da, la RES y el índice COSr2 resultaron más sensibles, diferenciando también sistemas agrícolas: cultivo perenne de anual, indicando a este último como el más degradante. Si bien resultan necesarias más investigaciones, estos resultados indicarían que suelos de alta calidad, presentarían un índice de estratificación COSr1 >2 y un COSr2 >1,5 por lo que valores menores indicarían pérdida de calidad. El índice MOP/RES desarrollado detectó diferencias en la calidad de MOP y su ciclado, resultando los suelos vírgenes y bajo cultivo perenne, sin remoción de suelo (T), con un ciclado más lento que los suelos bajo cultivo anual (M).

El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar los efectos del desmonte y posterior reforestación con coníferas (Pinus sp.) sobre las reservas de carbono y nitrógeno del suelo, y sus relaciones de estratificación en Oxisoles. En el departamento de Oberá (Misiones), con un diseño completamente al azar, se seleccionaron doce reservas de Selva subtropical (S) y doce lotes con forestaciones de Pinus sp. de 20 años de edad (P). En cada uno se realizó un muestreo de suelo, compuesto, aleatorio simple, a 3 profundidades: 0-0,10; 0,10-0,20; 0,20-0,30 m. Las variables evaluadas fueron: textura, pH, densidad aparente (Da), carbono orgánico (COS) y nitrógeno total (N). Se calcularon los stocks de carbono (SC) y de nitrógeno (SN) de 0 a 0,30 m, la tasa de acumulación de carbono (TACOS) y las relaciones de estratificación del COS y del N (COSr y Nr). Los suelos bajo P presentaron menores valores de COS, N, SC y SN, en tanto que la TACOS fue -0,86 Mg C ha-1 año-1, señalando degradación del suelo. Las COSr fueron mayores en S, tomando valores superiores a 2, denotando una alta calidad de suelo. La eliminación de la S y su reemplazo por P provocó una pérdida del 28% del SC y del 51% del SN, indicando degradación y pérdida de calidad del suelo por el uso forestal.

A comienzos del siglo XX, la selva subtropical paranaense ocupaba las dos terceras partes de la provincia de Misiones, con aproximadamente 2 millones de hectáreas. La deforestación de las tierras se produjo para el posterior uso del suelo con fines agrícola y/o forestal, particularmente para la implantación de especies exóticas como Pinus y Eucaliptus, provocando alteraciones en los suelos. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar indicadores biológicos de calidad de suelo, desarrollar índices, aplicar índices funcionales de la literatura y evaluar su sensibilidad para detectar cambios en suelos rojos desmontados y forestados con Pinus sp. El trabajo fue realizado en Oxisoles del Departamento de Oberá (Misiones) Argentina. Se empleó un diseño completamente al azar, se consideraron dos tratamientos: Selva (S) y plantaciones de Pinus sp (Pi) de 20 años. Se muestrearon suelos de 12 lotes bajo cultivo de Pi y 12 bajo S. En cada uno de ellos, se extrajeron muestras compuestas de suelo de: 0-0,10; 0,10-0,20 y 0,20-0,30m. Se determinaron: pH, materia orgánica total (MO) y particulada (MOP), nitrógeno total (Nt) y potencialmente mineralizable (NPM), respiración de suelo (RES). Se aplicaron los índices NPM/Nt, NPM/MOP, MOP/MO, MOP/RES y NPM/RES. Las correlaciones de NPM con MO, MOP, Nt, y los índices NPM/Nt, NPM/MOP, MOP/RES y NPM/RES fueron positivas y significativas en las tres profundidades. Los indicadores biológicos evaluados y sus índices, han confirmado que el uso forestal por 20 años, provocó un disturbio del equilibrio natural de los suelos vírgenes. El desmonte y posterior uso forestal produjo un balance orgánico negativo, puesto de manifiesto en la disminución de los indicadores MO (37%), MOP (41%), Nt (52%) y NPM (70%) de 0-0,10 m, y una modificación en el funcionamiento del sistema, reflejado en los índices funcionales MOP/RES y NPM/RES.

Background: Donor human milk banks are much more than simple centers for collection, storage, processing, and distribution of donor human milk, as they cover other aspects and represent a real opportunity to promote and support breastfeeding. The aim of our study is to assess the impact that opening a human milk bank has had on the proportion of infants receiving exclusive breast milk at discharge and other aspects related to feeding children with birth weight < or = 1500 g or < 32 weeks gestation admitted to the neonatal unit. Methods: The study included babies of < or = 1500 g or < 32 weeks gestation. Fifty infants born from February to July in 2006, before the opening of the human milk bank, and 54 born from February to July in 2008, after its opening, met inclusive criteria. We collected data about days of hospital stay, hours of life when feeding was started, hours of life when full enteral feeding was attained, the type of milk received during admission, and the type of feeding on discharge. Results: Children born in 2008 commenced feeding 16 hours earlier than those born in 2006 (p = 0.00). The proportion of infants receiving exclusive breast milk at discharge was 54% in 2006 and 56% in 2008 (p = 0.87). The number of days they received their mother's own milk during the first 28 days of life was 24.2 days in 2006, compared to 23.7 days in 2008 (p = 0.70). In 2006, 60% of infants received infant formula at least once in the first 28 days of life, compared to 37% in 2008 (p = 0.01). Conclusions: The opening of a donor human milk bank in a neonatal unit did not reduce the proportion of infants exclusively fed with breast milk at discharge, but did reduce the proportion of infants that received infant formula during the first four weeks of life.
