Since cellulitis is one of the most important factors for the prognosis of lymphedema, the prevention and prediction of cellulitis are considered to be critical in controlling lymphedema. We hypothesized that patients with lymphedema might show meteoropathy, as abdominal aortic aneurysm ruptures are considered to be influenced by climatic conditions, and the lymphatic system is one of the circulation systems. Thus, we aimed to determine if the onset of cellulitis in limbs affected by lymphedema is related to climatic conditions. We reviewed the clinical records of patients with lymphedema admitted for cellulitis at our institute between January 2007 and December 2017. We identified 40 patients, 25 of whom lived in the same area. We examined the association between the number of patient admissions according to season and meteorological data obtained from the Japan Meteorological Agency database. Thirteen of 25 patients were admitted in summer, whereas only one patient was admitted in winter. Both higher temperature and lower atmospheric pressure around the day of admission were associated with the occurrence of cellulitis. Lymphedema may be regarded as a meteoropathic disease, as climatic conditions were shown to be associated with cellulitis in limbs affected by lymphedema.

Background: Osteochondromas of the mandibular condyle show facial asymmetry and malocclusion. Because condylar osteochondromas are generally resected in a preauricular approach with risks of facial nerve injury and visible scar, the authors report endoscopically assisted intraoral resection of osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle with a piezoelectric surgical device.Case presentation: A 38-year-old woman presented with malocclusion and facial asymmetry caused by deviation of the chin to the left. Computed tomography showed a hyperdense, well-circumscribed mass arising from the medial aspect of the right mandibular condyle with resorption of the skull base. The patient underwent an endoscopically-assisted intraoral condylectomy with a piezoelectric surgical device. The postoperative course was uneventful without trismus, malocclusion, or facial asymmetry, and there was no recurrence 4 years after surgery.Conclusion:Endoscopically assisted intraoral resection of osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle with a piezoelectric surgical device is a minimally invasive and safe surgery.

Intraoral removal of a submandibular gland stone is less invasive than submandibulectomy, with no life-threatening airway complications reported until now. We report a case involving airway obstruction caused by pharyngolaryngeal swelling after intraoral removal of a submandibular gland stone. A 31-year-old man with a left submandibular gland stone underwent intraoral removal of the stone under general anesthesia and was discharged 1 day after surgery. That night, he was transported back to our hospital by ambulance for dyspnea. Because computed tomography showed pharyngolaryngeal swelling, he was intubated and managed by a ventilator. Four days later, the pharyngolaryngeal swelling had mostly resolved and he was extubated and discharged. Surgeons should be vigilant of the potential risk of airway complications following an intraoral approach for submandibular gland stone removal.

Objectives: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the usefulness of magnetic resonance lymphography (MRL) with superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) in sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping of clinically N0 early oral cancer, and to conduct a comparative study of this MRL with CT lymphography (CTL). Methods: CTL and MRL were performed for SLN mapping before surgery for 20 patients with clinically N0 early oral cancer. The detection rate, number, and location of SLNs in CTL and MRL were evaluated. Furthermore, optimal scanning/imaging timing in MRL was examined. Results: SLNs were detected by CTL in 18 (90%) patients, and the total and mean number of SLN were 35 and 1.8, respectively. All SLNs could be detected 2 min and 3.5–5 min after contrast medium injection. In all patients, SLNs were detected by MRL at 10 min after SPIO injection, and the total and mean number of SLN was 53 and 2.7, respectively. MRL at 30 min after the injection showed additional 18 secondary lymph nodes. Conclusion: MRL with SPIO is safe and useful imaging for the detection of SLNs in clinically N0 early oral cancer, and the optimal imaging timing is 10 min after SPIO injection.

Migration of sialoliths is extremely rare and is presumed to be a consequence of abscess formation. We report a minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided, extraoral approach for the removal of extraparenchymal sialoliths caused by acute parotitis. A 57-year-old man with left buccal swelling and pain had two parotid sialoliths. Buccal undulation was present after administration of antibiotics, and ultrasound showed extraparenchymal sialoliths. The migrated sialoliths from the parotid gland could be identified easily under ultrasound guidance and removed completely with long mosquito forceps via the small skin incision.

Drawing from the results of focus group interviews conducted between 2006 and 2010 in Japan, this paper examines the functions of emoji. Now that emoji have gained global recognition as seen in mobile applications, examining the way Japanese teens use emoji offers some insight into the way emoji use is practiced among teens in the global cultural context. The results highlight two functions of emoji in the context of mobile interactions: emoji allow Japanese teens to manage communication climate as well as to construct and express their aesthetic selves. Further research is needed to investigate to what extent these interaction norms, symbolic meanings, and electronic emotions are applicable to various cultural contexts in the era of smart phones. Such efforts will promote our further understanding of both current and future trends of teens’ mobile emoji use, emotional experiences, sense of the self, and relational concerns.

This special issue is an outcome of theCOSTStrategicWorkshop on Social Robotic and Sustainability that took place in Brussels, Belgium, on 10–13 June 2013 ( ). We would like to begin by thanking both participants and organizers of the workshop for a very rich and inspiring event. Particular thanks go to Professor Leopoldina Fortunati (Facolta di Scienze della Formazione Universita degli Studi di Udine, Udine, Italy) who encouraged us to pursue the possibility of this special issue in conversation with the Editor in chief, Shuzhi S. Ge. We have organized our issue around the three primary themes announced in the call, beginning with (1) Form/appearance (e.g., human/animal likeness in appearance; everyday media forms and robotic functions; cultural attitudes toward robot forms, etc.) In this section, we begin with Eleanor Sandry, “Reevaluating the form and communication of social robots: The benefits of collaborating with machinelike robots.” Sandry highlights a first thematic for this special issue—namely, that among the manifold disciplines required for adequate attention to social robots, media and communication studies must be included for what these fields can offer in terms of better understanding what is required for human sociability

加熱機器や調理条件の検討に有用な,アジ焼き魚の評価シートの作成を試みた.日本料理専門調理人および調理学研究室員を試験室パネルとして,アジ焼き魚の好ましさを評価する言葉を調査したところ,約50語が収集された.なかでも,外観とテクスチャーに関する言葉が多かった.これを整理して14項目とした.これら14項目を説明用語になおして,それらの重要度を調査した.その結果に基づいて項目を7に絞った.数値配分法で7項目の重み付けを行った後,試験室パネルによる官能検査の結果に重回帰分析を応用し,配点を修正した.最終的に選ばれた評価項目と配点は,姿,形の良さ(10点),表面の状態(8点),焼きムラ(6点),全体的な焦げ色(20点),身のほぐれ具合(6点),汁け(25点),アジのうまみ(25点)となった。得られた評価シートを用いて市場パネルによる官能検査を行い,その妥当性を確認した.

米飯のおいしさに求められる要因のうち,味に着目し,味に関与すると思われる成分の定量および偏在状態の検討を目的とした.特徴的な性質を有する3品種(コシヒカリ,ともゆたか,およびリンクス89)の生米の全粒部および外層部を試料とし,以下の結果を得た.(1) 全糖は,全粒部および外層部ともにともゆたかに多く含まれたが,外在率では品種間に差がみられなかった.還元糖は,全粒部ではコシヒカリに多かったが,外層部ではともゆたかに多く,外在率はコシヒカリでやや低い値となった.3種類の遊離糖のうち,シュクロースが総含量の約90%をしめた.また,シュクロースはいずれの品種においても60%以上の高い外在率を示した.フラクトースおよびグルコースの外在率は約23%と近い値であった.いずれの糖も,ともゆたかにもっとも多く含まれたが,外在率はもっとも低い値であった.(2) 遊離アミノ酸は,3品種ともにアスパラギン酸,グルタミン酸,セリン,アラニンが比較的多く,この4種類で全アミノ酸の56-71%(全粒部),76-80%(外層部)を占めた.全アミノ酸含量は,全粒部ではともゆたかに多かったが,外層部ではコシヒカリとともゆたかはほぼ同量であった.外在率はアミノ酸の種類および米の品種によって異なり,全体的にみてコシヒカリにおいてやや高い値を示した.
