ABSTRACT Global warming is one of the biggest threats to global biodiversity causing not only changes in the patterns of precipitation and temperature but also disturbing ecological interactions. The aim of our study was to forecast the effect of climate change on the distribution of food‐deceptive orchid species whose pollination strategy relies on a strict association with pollinators and co‐occurring rewarding Faboideae plants. We used the ecological niche modeling approach to evaluate future overlap of the suitable niches of studied orchid species with the predicted distribution of their ecological partners. Models were made based on two different global circulation models (FIO, CNRM). CNRM projections predict expansion of orchids' geographical range. In contrast, FIO prediction is less optimistic, forecasting species range contraction. The studied Faboideae species showed different responses to predicted global warming with no consistent patterns in how their suitable niches might change. Most climate change projections and scenarios of the future modifications of temperature and precipitation patterns do not predict significant loss of suitable niches of Trichocolletes bees (Colletidae) pollinating Diuris species. However, global warming has the potential to disrupt interactions between the studied orchids and their co‐occurring pea plants by altering the overlap of their geographical ranges which can further disturb pollination success. CNRM projections predict an overall loss of Faboideae within the potential geographical range of Diuris brumalis. Conversely, FIO projections suggest a less extensive predicted divergence. Our simulations offer suggestions for conservation strategies of orchids and potentially for other species that have a similar pollination strategy. The areas indicated here as suitable in the future for the occurrence of all ecological partners can be important climate refugia to consider in local conservation plans. The approach used in our study can serve as a model for understanding the potential effects of climate change on the strength of the pollination system via food deception.

Abstract We performed laboratory tests and field surveys to evaluate the performance of a low‐cost 3‐component seismometer, consisting of three passive electromagnetic spring‐mass sensors, whose 4.5 Hz natural frequency is extended down to 0.5 Hz thanks to hyper damping. Both lab and field datasets show that the −3 dB band of the seismometer ranges approximately from 0.7 to 39 Hz, in agreement with the nominal specifications. Median magnitude frequency response curves obtained from processing field data indicate that lower corner of the −3 dB band could be extended down to 0.55 Hz and the nominal sensitivity may be overestimated. Lab results confirm the non‐linear behavior of the passive spring‐mass sensor expected for high‐level input signals (a few to tens of mm/s) and field data confirm relative timing accuracy is ±10 ms (1 sample). We found that absolute timing of data collected with USB GPS antennas can be affected by lag as large as +0.5 s. By testing two identical units, we noticed that there could be differences around 0.5 dB (i.e., about 6%) between the components of the same unit as well as between the same component of the two units. Considering shallow passive seismic applications and mainly focusing on unstable slope monitoring, our findings show that the tested seismometer is able to identify resonance frequencies of unstable rock pillars and to generate interferograms that can be processed to estimate subsurface velocity variations.

The Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) is a fundamental process when high safety standards for the tested component are required. The evaluation may imply a combination of methods to achieve the highest Probability of Detection (POD) resulting in several data available which must be properly collected, processed, and stored for future reviews and for traceability reasons. All these requirements imply a sophisticated digital infrastructure and the usage of the most advanced Information Technology (IT) solutions to achieve computation speed, safe data processing and accessibility of the information. The Industry4.0 revolution is the result of the combination of digital technology to industrial processes for rethinking the performances in terms of automation, integration, crosslinking, availability and sharing of information. These principles can be applied in the NDE process as several products on the market are tested and monitored during the whole lifetime. The tracking of data, the secure data validation, and the need to avoid misuses and manipulations are new additional requirements for the NDE 4.0. Block chain technology, mainly known for crypto applications, is a promising technology for storing digital identity and test records offering traceability, safety and availability of the data. The present paper wants to present the Swiss Safety Center AG approach for a specific application case (retesting of gas cylinders according to ISO18119) where the guidelines and trends of NDE 4.0 have been successfully integrated in a fully automatic system, first in class for this application. The paper wants also to provides some insights about future trends and potential developments which may not be limited to this specific case but can be applied for other similar applications, e.g. in railways, manufacturing industry, automotive, aerospace and more in general in the NDE applications.

To ensure the satisfactory performance of a welded structure, the quality of the welds must be determined by adequate testing procedures. During Visual Testing (VT), the weld is examined through the eyes of an inspector to determine surface discontinuities. Although this is commonly considered the easiest, quickest, and least expensive type of inspection, it has some limitations: a certified inspector shall always be on site to perform the test, making it strongly dependant on his experience, knowledge and current environmental conditions. In addition, there is no possibility to record inspection data except standard pictures and comments to be added to inspection reports. Modern technology brings novel solutions for quality assurance. This article describes a powerful tool which can improve the reliability of VT that combines precise laser measurements, image processing and data cloud computing. A portable magnetic crawler has been developed using a Raspberry Pi SBC, a smart profile sensor and a 5 MPix industrial colour camera in order to gather both weld 3D point cloud and surface pictures. Laser triangulation and processing power directly integrated on board allow an easy weld profile measurement. Undercuts, reinforcement excess, spatters, hi-low are precisely detected and sized by the laser sensor while integrated 2D camera records and analyses surface features such contaminations, corrosion, and weld discoloration. The point cloud weld reconstruction is realized stitching together 2D profile data at a fixed interval that can range up to a hundredth of a millimetre with a spatial resolution up to 50um. Inspected weld is fully digitalized in the form of 3D object together with a set of numerical features, data are securely stored in a local flash memory and automatically synchronized with cloud platform for remote data visualization. Automatic weld assessment can also be applied using cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms together with deep learning tools. The combination of images, 3D models, measurements, and other evaluable features all together in the same digital platform definitely enriches the weld assessment making it quicker and reliable with the support of AI, it gives the possibility of remote visual inspection, it ensures a flawless workflow where visual inspection data are stored in a dedicated platform and can be accessed at any moment by stakeholders.

Disposable filtering face piece respirators (FFRs) are not approved for reuse as standard of care. However, lessons learnt from the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, FFRs decontamination and reuse may be needed as crisis capacity strategy to ensure availability in medical facilities. We studied a decontamination methodology based on atmospheric pressure plasma technology, which allows for rapid, contact-free decontamination without utilisation of harmful chemicals, and suitable to access small pores and microscopic filters openings. Promising performances in terms of bioburden reduction (Log6) were achieved while imparting mainly transient chemical surface modifications to the masks filtering layers. The plasma decontamination process proposed was also considered in terms of the environmental impact of re-use technology for FFR medical devices in order to understand its sustainability. This study assessed the feasibility of an atmospheric pressure plasma approach for the decontamination of disposable filtering face piece respirators (FFR) or respiratory masks commonly used in hospital settings. This research work describes the structural optimization of the MicroMED Dust Analyzer, an Optical Particle Counter developed for the ESA ExoMars 2022 mission. Topology Optimization, a non-conventional design technique was adopted to obtain a lighter component, a valuable achievement for aerospace and space scientific instruments design. In particular, two solutions for the instrument optical bench were proposed and assessed relying on a classical finite element approach, comparing the improved performance with the current design. The optimization outcome proved the adopted design workflow robustness and provided promising results in view of a possible mechanical design enhancement of the MicroMED Dust Analyzer instrument. Indeed, a mass budget saving of about 55% of the considered design domain was achieved, and the dynamic behaviour of the optical bench was improved by up to 50% of the first natural frequency value. Finally, a mockup of the lightened optical bench was manufactured, and the redesign effectiveness was proven by comparing the numerical mechanical resonances with the ones obtained experimentally. An error smaller than 5% was found on the first natural frequency, validating the performed optimization approach.

Orchid seeds are predominantly wind-dispersed, often developed within dry, dehiscent fruits that typically release millions of dust-like seeds into the air. Animal-mediated seed dispersal is a lesser-known phenomenon in the family and predominantly occurs in groups belonging to early-diverging lineages bearing indehiscent, fleshy fruits with hard, rounded, dark seeds. In this review, we explore the evolutionary trends of seed dispersal mechanisms in Orchidaceae, focusing on the pantropical genus Vanilla. Notably, certain Neotropical species of Vanilla produce vanillin-aromatic compounds synthesized naturally in their fruits, which plays a pivotal role in seed dispersal. Ectozoochory occurs in dry, dehiscent fruits, whose seeds are dispersed by (i) male euglossine bees collecting the fruit’s vanillin aromatic compounds and (ii) female stingless bees collecting the fruit’s mesocarp. Endozoochory occurs in (iii) highly nutritious, indehiscent fruits consumed by terrestrial mammals or (iv) fleshy, dehiscent fruits whose mesocarp is consumed by arboreal mammals. Wind dispersal appears to be a derived state in Orchidaceae and, given its predominance, a trait likely associated with enhanced speciation rates. Zoochory primarily occurs in groups derived from early-diverging lineages; occasional reversions suggest a link between dispersal mode and fruit and seed traits. Interestingly, fruit dehiscence and fleshiness in Vanilla lack phylogenetic signal despite their role in determining dispersal modes, suggesting potential environmental adaptability.

Many studies in the literature have already evidenced that pedestrians are able to change the dynamic properties of slender structures (e.g., footbridges and staircases). The aim of this paper is to analyse which pedestrians’ features mostly affect the structure behaviour, in order to properly account for them in a human–structure interaction problem, while disregarding the less relevant ones. This is accomplished by measuring the apparent mass (i.e., the frequency response function between the vibration of the structure at the contact point and the consequent force exerted by the pedestrian to the structure itself) curves of human bodies and coupling them to the dynamics of a slender structure. In more detail, this paper aims at analysing which factors must be accounted for among intra-subject variability (i.e., the dynamic behaviour of the same subject can change because it is characterised by a natural dispersion), inter-subject variability (i.e., different subjects have different dynamic behaviours) and the posture (i.e., the same subject changes posture during motion and this causes a change of his/her dynamic features). The influence of the apparent mass properties on the modal parameters of the hosting structure is addressed by means of a modal approach.

Many workers are exposed to foot-transmitted vibration, which can lead to the development of vibration-induced white foot: a debilitating condition with neurological, vascular and osteoarticular symptoms. To design effective prevention mechanisms (i.e., boots and insoles) for isolating workers from vibration exposure, continued model development of the foot’s biodynamic response in different positions is necessary. This study uses a previously developed model of the foot–ankle system (FAS) to investigates how altering the center of pressure (COP) location can change the biodynamic response of the FAS to standing vibration exposure. Formerly published experimental responses for apparent mass and transmissibility at five anatomical locations in three COP positions were used to optimize the model. Differences occurred with the Kelvin–Voigt elements used to represent the soft tissues of the foot sole: at the heel, the distal head of the metatarsals and distal phalanges. The stiffness increased wherever the COP was concentrated (i.e., forward over the toes or backward over the heel). The variability of the model parameters was always greatest when the COP was concentrated in the heel. This suggests future FAS models need to more clearly address how the soft tissue of the plantar fat pad is modelled.

Suspended particulate matter (PMx) is one of the most important environmental pollutants. Miniaturized sensors capable of measuring and analyzing PMx are crucial in environmental research fields. The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is one of the most well-known sensors that could be used to monitor PMx. In general, in environmental pollution science, PMx is divided into two main categories correlated to particle diameter (e.g., PM < 2.5 µm and PM < 10 µm). QCM-based systems are capable of measuring this range of particles, but there is an important issue that limits the application. In fact, if particles with different diameters are collected on QCM electrodes, the response will be a result of the total mass of particles; there are no simple methods to discriminate the mass of the two categories without the use of a filter or manipulation during sampling. The QCM response depends on particle dimensions, fundamental resonant frequency, the amplitude of oscillation, and system dissipation properties. In this paper, we study the effects of oscillation amplitude variations and fundamental frequency (10, 5, and 2.5 MHz) values on the response, when particle matter with different sizes (2 µm and 10 µm) is deposited on the electrodes. The results showed that the 10 MHz QCM was not capable of detecting the 10 µm particles, and its response was not influenced by oscillation amplitude. On the other hand, the 2.5 MHz QCM detected the diameters of both particles, but only if a low amplitude value was used.

Comparison and quantification of multiple pre- and post-pollination barriers to interspecific hybridization are important to understand the factors promoting reproductive isolation. Such isolating factors have been studied recently in many flowering plant species which seek after the general roles and relative strengths of different pre- and post-pollination barriers. In this study, we quantified six isolating factors (ecogeographic isolation, phenological isolation, pollinator isolation, pollinia-pistil interactions, fruit production, and seed development) that could possibly be acting as reproductive barriers at different stages among three sympatric Habenaria species (H. limprichtii, H. davidii, and H. delavayi). These three species overlap geographically but occupy different microhabitats varying in soil water content. They were isolated through pollinator interactions both ethologically (pollinator preference) and mechanically (pollinia attachment site), but to a variable degree for different species pairs. Interspecific crosses between H. limprichtii and H. davidii result in high fruit set, and embryo development suggested weak post-pollination barriers, whereas bidirectional crosses of H. delavayi with either of the other two species fail to produce fruits. Our results revealed that pollinators were the most important isolating barrier including both ethological and mechanical mechanisms, to maintain the boundaries among these three sympatric Habenaria species. Our study also highlights the importance of a combination of pre-and post-pollination barriers for species co-existence in Orchidaceae.

Abstract There is a growing demand to attain organic materials with high electron mobility, μe, as current reliable reported values are significantly lower than those exhibited by their hole mobility counterparts. Here, it is shown that a well‐known nonfullerene‐acceptor commonly used in organic solar cells, that is, BTP‐4F (aka Y6), enables solution‐processed organic thin‐film transistors (OTFT) with a μe as high as 2.4 cm2 V−1 s−1. This value is comparable to those of state‐of‐the‐art n‐type OTFTs, opening up a plethora of new possibilities for this class of materials in the field of organic electronics. Such efficient charge transport is linked to a readily achievable highly ordered crystalline phase, whose peculiar structural properties are thoroughly discussed. This work proves that structurally ordered nonfullerene acceptors can exhibit intrinsically high mobility and introduces a new approach in the quest of high μe organic materials, as well as new guidelines for future materials design.

Outgassing or thruster’s generated contaminants are critical for optical surfaces and optical payloads because scientific measurements and, in general, the performances can be degraded or jeopardized by uncontrolled contamination. This is a well-known issue in space technology that is demonstrated by the growing usage of quartz crystal microbalances as a solution for measuring material outgassing properties data and characterizing the on-orbit contamination environment. Operation in space requires compatibility with critical requirements, especially the mechanical and thermal environments to be faced throughout the mission. This work provides the design of a holding structure based on 3D printing technology conceived to meet the environmental characteristics of space application, and in particular, to face harsh mechanical and thermal environments. A kinematic mounting has been conceived to grant compatibility with a large temperature range, and it has been designed by finite element methods to overcome loading during the launch phases and cope with a temperature working range down to cryogenic temperatures. Qualification in such environments has been performed on a mockup by testing a prototype of the holding assembly between −110 ∘C and 110 ∘C and allowing verification of the mechanical resistance and stability of the electrical contacts for the embedded heater and sensor in that temperature range. Moreover, mechanical testing in a random environment characterized by an RMS acceleration level of 500 m/s2 and excitation frequency from 20 to 2000 Hz was successfully performed. The testing activity allowed for validation of the proposed design and opened the road to the possible implementation of the proposed design for future flight opportunities, also onboard micro or nanosatellites. Moreover, exploiting the manufacturing technology, the proposed design can implement an easy assembling and mounting of the holding system. At the same time, 3D printing provides a cost-effective solution even for small series production for ground applications, like monitoring the contaminants in thermo-vacuum chambers or clean rooms, or depositions chambers.

Quartz Crystal Microbalances (QCM) are widely used instruments thanks to their stability, low mass, and low cost. Nevertheless, the sensitivity to temperature is their main drawback and is often a driver for their design. Though the crystal average temperature is mostly considered as the only disturbance, temperature affects the QCM measurements also through the in-plane temperature gradients, an effect identified in the past but mostly neglected. Recently, it has been shown that this effect can prevail over that of the average temperature in implementations where the heat for thermal control is released directly on the crystal through deposited film heaters. In this study, the effect of temperature gradients for this kind of crystal is analyzed, the sensitivity of frequency to the average temperature gradient on the electrode border is determined, and a correction is proposed and verified. A numerical thermal model of the QCM has been created to determine the temperature gradients on the electrode borders. The frequency versus temperature-gradient function has been experimentally determined in different thermal conditions. The correction function has been eventually applied to a QCM implementing a crystal of the same manufacturing lot as the one used for the characterization. The residual errors after the implementation of the correction of both average temperature and temperature gradients were always lower than 5% of the initial temperature disturbance. Moreover, using the correlation between the heater power dissipation and the generated temperature gradients, it has been shown that an effective correction strategy can be based on the measurement of the power delivered to the crystal without the determination of the temperature gradient.
