Many museums are currently providing online access to their collections. The state of the art research in the last decade shows that it is beneficial for institutions to provide their datasets as Linked Data in order to achieve easy cross-referencing, interlinking and integration. In this paper, we present the Rijksmuseum linked dataset (accessible at http://datahub.io/dataset/rijksmuseum), along with collection and vocabulary statistics, as well as lessons learned from the process of converting the collection to Linked Data. The version of March 2016 contains over 350,000 objects, including detailed descriptions and high-quality images released under a public domain license.

An increasing number of cultural heritage institutions publish data online. Ontologies can be used to structure published data, thereby increasing interoperability. To achieve widespread adoption of ontologies, institutions such as libraries, archives and museums have to be able to assess whether an ontology can adequately capture information about their artifacts. We identify six requirements that should be met by ontologies in the cultural heritage domain, based upon modeling challenges encountered while publishing data of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and challenges observed in related work. These challenges regard specialization, object- and event-centric approaches, temporality, representations, views and subject matter. For each challenge, we investigate common modeling approaches, by discussing two models regularly used in the museum sector: the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model and the Europeana Data Model. The outlined approaches and requirements provide insights for data modeling practices reaching beyond the cultural heritage sector.

Games with a purpose (GWAPs) are increasingly used in audio-visual collections as a mechanism for annotating videos through tagging. One such GWAP is Waisda?, a video labeling game where players tag streaming video and win points by reaching consensus on tags with other players. The open-ended and unconstrained manner of tagging in the fast-paced setting of the game has fundamental impact on the resulting tags. We find that Waisda? tags predominately describe visual objects and rarely refer to the topics of the videos. In this study we evaluate to what extent the tags entered by players can be regarded as topical descriptors of the video material. Moreover, we characterize the quality of the user tags as topical descriptors with the aim to detect and filter out the bad ones. Our results show that after filtering, game tags perform equally well compared to the manually crafted metadata when it comes to accessing the videos based on topic. An important consequence of this finding is that tagging games can provide a cost-effective alternative in situations when manual annotation by professionals is too costly.

The German ETS-7 (Engineering Test Satellite 7) robotics experimental project, namely GETEX (German Technology Experiment on ETS-7) project was performed. The GETEX project was based on MU (Memorandum Of Understanding), which was concluded between the NASDA and the DLR (Germany Space Center). The following topics were included in the main targets of GETEX: (1) the verification of a telerobotic ground control station for the remote control of free-floating robot; (2) the proof of the autonomy features in the peg-in-hole experiment using virtual reality and 'vision & force' control scheme through the experiment; and (3) the verification of the existing dynamic models of free floating space robots the experiments with relevance to the dynamic behavior of ETS-7 in free motion mode. All experiments were carried out successfully. The GETEX dynamic motion experiment has been useful in the validation of the model of the ETS-7 satellite-manipulator system and the development of a model for the external disturbances., ドイツのETS-7(技術試験衛星7型)ロボティックス実験プロジェクトであるGETEX(ETS-7でのドイツ技術実験)プロジェクトを実施した。このプロジェクトはNASDAとDLR (ドイツ宇宙センタ)との間で交換された了解覚書(MOU)に基づく。GETEXでは以下の主要目標をもった。すなわち、(1)自由浮遊ロボット遠隔制御のテレロボティック地上制御局検証、(2)バーチャルリアリティとビジョン/フォース制御方式を用いたペグインホール実験とこの実験による自律性の証明、および(3)自由運動モードでのETS-7の動的挙動に関する実験と自由浮遊宇宙ロボット現用の動的モデルの検証であった。すべての実験は成功裏に実施できた。GETEX動的運動実験はETS-7衛星マニピュレータシステムのモデルの検証や外部外乱モデルの開発に有用である。

Spreadsheets models are frequently used by scientists to analyze research data. These models are typically described in a paper or a report, which serves as single source of information on the underlying research project. As the calculation workflow in these models is not made explicit, readers are not able to fully understand how the research results are calculated, and trace them back to the underlying spreadsheets. This paper proposes a methodology for semi-automatically deriving the calculation workflow underlying a set of spreadsheets. The starting point of our methodology is the cell dependency graph, representing all spreadsheet cells and connections. We automatically aggregate all cells in the graph that represent instances and duplicates of the same quantities, based on analysis of the formula syntax. Subsequently, we use a set of heuristics, incorporating knowledge on spreadsheet design, computational procedures and domain knowledge, to select those quantities, that are relevant for understanding the calculation workflow. We explain and illustrate our methodology by actually applying it on three sets of spreadsheets from existing research projects in the domains of environmental and life science. Results from these case studies show that our constructed calculation models approximate the ground truth calculation workflows, both in terms of content and size, but are not a perfect match.

Contains fulltext : 136666.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), Collagen VI-related myopathies are disorders of connective tissue presenting with an overlap phenotype combining clinical involvement from the muscle and from the connective tissue. Not all patients displaying related overlap phenotypes between muscle and connective tissue have mutations in collagen VI. Here, we report a homozygous recessive loss of function mutation and a de novo dominant mutation in collagen XII (COL12A1) as underlying a novel overlap syndrome involving muscle and connective tissue. Two siblings homozygous for a loss of function mutation showed widespread joint hyperlaxity combined with weakness precluding independent ambulation, while the patient with the de novo missense mutation was more mildly affected, showing improvement including the acquisition of walking. A mouse model with inactivation of the Col12a1 gene showed decreased grip strength, a delay in fiber-type transition and a deficiency in passive force generation while the muscle seems more resistant to eccentric contraction induced force drop, indicating a role for a matrix-based passive force-transducing elastic element in the generation of the weakness. This new muscle connective tissue overlap syndrome expands on the emerging importance of the muscle extracellular matrix in the pathogenesis of muscle disease.

The generation of intense ion beams from high-intensity laser-generated plasmas has been the focus of research for the last decade. In the LIGHT collaboration the expertise of heavy ion accelerator scientists and laser and plasma physicists has been combined to investigate the prospect of merging these ion beams with conventional accelerator technology and exploring the possibilities of future applications. We report about the goals and first results of the LIGHT collaboration to generate, handle and transport laser driven ion beams. This effort constitutes an important step in research for next generation accelerator technologies.

Contains fulltext : 118804.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), Microscale thermophoresis (MST) allows for quantitative analysis of protein interactions in free solution and with low sample consumption. The technique is based on thermophoresis, the directed motion of molecules in temperature gradients. Thermophoresis is highly sensitive to all types of binding-induced changes of molecular properties, be it in size, charge, hydration shell or conformation. In an all-optical approach, an infrared laser is used for local heating, and molecule mobility in the temperature gradient is analyzed via fluorescence. In standard MST one binding partner is fluorescently labeled. However, MST can also be performed label-free by exploiting intrinsic protein UV-fluorescence. Despite the high molecular weight ratio, the interaction of small molecules and peptides with proteins is readily accessible by MST. Furthermore, MST assays are highly adaptable to fit to the diverse requirements of different biomolecules, such as membrane proteins to be stabilized in solution. The type of buffer and additives can be chosen freely. Measuring is even possible in complex bioliquids like cell lysate allowing close to in vivo conditions without sample purification. Binding modes that are quantifiable via MST include dimerization, cooperativity and competition. Thus, its flexibility in assay design qualifies MST for analysis of biomolecular interactions in complex experimental settings, which we herein demonstrate by addressing typically challenging types of binding events from various fields of life science.

Diversity and profundity of the topics in cultural heritage collections make experts from outside the institution indispensable for acquiring qualitative and comprehensive annotations. We define the concept of nichesourcing and present challenges in the process of obtaining qualitative annotations from people in these niches. We believe that experts provide better annotations if this process is personalized. We present a framework called Accurator, that allows to realize and evaluate strategies and applications for personalized nichesourcing.

In this document we describe the Amsterdam Museum Linked Open Data set. The dataset is a five-star Linked Data representation and comprises the entire collection of the Amsterdam Museum consisting of more than 70,000 object descriptions. Furthermore, the institution's thesaurus and person authority files used in the object metadata are included in the Linked Data set. The data is mapped to the Europeana Data Model, utilizing Dublin Core, SKOS, RDA-group2 elements and the OAI-ORE model to represent the museum data. Vocabulary concepts are mapped to GeoNames and DBpedia. The two main contributions of this dataset are the inclusion of internal vocabularies and the fact that the complexity of the original dataset is retained.

Local reversible structural changes in SrTiO3 single crystals in an external electric field are induced by oxygen redistribution. We present in-situ X-ray diffraction measurements during and immediately after electroformation. Several reflections are monitored and show an elongation of the cubic unit cell of strontium titanate. Raman investigations verify that the expansion of the unit cell involves a transition from the centro-symmetric to a lower symmetry phase. During a complete formation cycle, including the hold time of the electric field and relaxation time without field, two different dynamics are observed for the reversible transitions from cubic symmetry to tetragonal distortion: a slow one during the increase of the lattice constant in field direction and a fast one after switching off the electric field. Based on the experimental data we propose the formation of a polar strontium titanate unit cell at room temperature stabilized by the electric field, which is referred to as migration-induced field-stabilized polar (MFP) phase.
