Parental behavior is essential for mammalian offspring to survive. Because of this significance, elucidating the neurobiological mechanisms that facilitate parental behavior has received strong interest. Decades of studies utilizing pharmacology and molecular biology have revealed that in addition to its facilitatory effects on parturition and lactation, oxytocin (OT) promotes the expression of parental behavior in rodents. Recent studies have also described the modulation of sensory processing by OT and the interaction of the OT system with other brain regions associated with parental behavior. However, the precise neurobiological mechanisms underlying the facilitation of caregiving behaviors by OT remain unclear. In this Review , I summarize the findings from rats and mice with a view toward integrating past and recent progress. I then review recent advances in the understanding of the molecular, cellular, and circuit mechanisms of OT-mediated parental behavior. Based on these observations, I propose a hypothetical model that would explain the mechanisms underlying OT-mediated parental behavior. However, this encoding task may become particularly challenging for animals harboring a small number of sensory neurons. Here, we studied how the compact resource-limited chemosensory system of Caenorhabditis elegans uniquely encodes a range of chemical stimuli. Results: We find that each stimulus is encoded using a small and unique subset of neurons, where only a portion of the encoding neurons sense the stimulus directly, and the rest are recruited via inter-neuronal communication. Furthermore, while most neurons show stereotypical response dynamics, some neurons exhibit versatile dynamics that are either stimulus specific or network-activity dependent. Notably, it is the collective dynamics of all responding neurons which provides valuable information that ultimately enhances stimulus identification, particularly when required to discriminate between closely related stimuli. Conclusions: Together, these findings demonstrate how a compact and resource-limited chemosensory system can efficiently encode and discriminate a diverse range of chemical stimuli. Abstract In this contribution, we investigate two sparassodonts from the Sarmiento Formation (Colhuehuapian Age; Early Miocene) recovered at the Patagonian locality of Sacanana, Chubut Province, Argentina. The first specimen (MACN-Pv CH1911), identified as Sipalocyon externus, is an almost complete cranium with upper dentition. The second specimen (MACN-Pv CH40), referred to Borhyaena macrodonta, consists of a fragmentary rostral portion of the face with associated m3–m4. The cranium of S. externus was studied through µCT-scanning to investigate its internal anatomy and infer paleoecological aspects of olfaction and hearing. In general, the endocranial anatomy and encephalization quotient are like those of other metatherians. We report the presence of an accessory transverse diploic sinus that has not previously been described in marsupials. Elements of the nasal cavity (e.g., turbinals, ossified nasal septum, cribriform plate) of S. externus exhibit features that are widespread among marsupials. Sense of olfaction, as evaluated from the cribriform plate and the 3D models of the olfactory bulbs, appears to have grossly resembled that of the domestic cat, a well-researched therian proxy. The dimensions of the tympanic membrane, as estimated from the preserved ectotympanic, suggest that the optimal hearing frequency of S. externus would have been similar to that of extant carnivorous marsupials. In sum, our study suggests that S. externus was a typical small-bodied (2–3 kg) hypercarnivorous metatherian that primarily relied on vision to hunt its prey, complemented by other sensory capabilities (olfaction and hearing), in a similar manner to small felids.

Such morphological shifts may occur for sensory systems, which were previously reported to be prone to change with habitat characteristics in non-urban contexts. Here, we measured traits related to the visual and antennal sensory systems in the bees Halictus scabiosae and Osmia cornuta and the wasp Polistes dominula along an urbanisation gradient within Milan (Italy). We hypothesised that fragmentation could filter for better visual properties, and that higher temperature could filter for fewer thermoreceptors and more olfactory hairs. While controlling for body size, results show subtle but appreciable responses to urbanisation in one or more traits in all species, though not always supporting our hypotheses. O. cornuta shows marginally higher ommatidia density and smaller ommatidia diameter (associated with better visual resolution) in more fragmented sites, as well as marginally fewer thermoreceptors in hotter sites, in agreement with our two predictions. On the other hand, H. scabiosae has marginally smaller antennae and P. dominula has smaller eyes at warmer locations, and the wasp also has smaller antennae and 9th flagellomeres in more fragmented areas. Perhaps higher temperatures accelerate development of sensory system at higher speed than the rest of body in these two species. Our results represent the first evidence of urbanisation effects on the visual and antennal sensory systems of bees and wasps and underline how such effects may involve a much broader bouquet of traits then previously observed.

The darkness of the deep ocean limits the vision of diving predators, except when prey emit bioluminescence. It is hypothesized that deep-diving seals rely on highly developed whiskers to locate their prey. However, if and how seals use their whiskers while foraging in natural conditions remains unknown. We used animal-borne tags to show that free-ranging elephant seals use their whiskers for hydrodynamic prey sensing. Small, cheek-mounted video loggers documented seals actively protracting their whiskers in front of their mouths with rhythmic whisker movement, like terrestrial mammals exploring their environment. Seals focused their sensing effort at deep foraging depths, performing prolonged whisker protraction to detect, pursue, and capture prey. Feeding-event recorders with light sensors demonstrated that bioluminescence contributed to only about 20% of overall foraging success, confirming that whiskers play the primary role in sensing prey. Accordingly, visual prey detection complemented and enhanced prey capture. The whiskers' role highlights an evolutionary alternative to echolocation for adapting to the extreme dark of the deep ocean environment, revealing how sensory abilities shape foraging niche segregation in deep-diving mammals. Mammals typically have mobile facial whiskers, and our study reveals the significant function of whiskers in the natural foraging behavior of a marine predator. We demonstrate the importance of field-based sensory studies incorporating multimodality to better understand how multiple sensory systems are complementary in shaping the foraging success of predators.

The water quality is the most important parameter for aquatic species health and growth. The condition is very critical and is essential to monitor continuously. Poor water quality will affect health, growth and ability of the animal to survive. These also affected their harvesting yields based on the amount and size of the animal. The main water parameters such dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, temperature, salinity and turbidity are monitored and control for good water quality. The data were acquired by the developed instrument and send wirelessly through GPRS/GSM module to cloud-based database. The data were retrieved and the water quality is predicted using fuzzy logic and multi-layer perceptron. MATLAB software was used for the model which is developed based on Mamdani fuzzy interface system. The membership functions of fuzzy were generated, as well as the simulation and analysis of the water quality system. Results show that the performance of fuzzy method can improve system performance in monitoring the water quality. This system also provides alert signals to farmers based on specific limit value for the water quality parameters. For a ubiquitous sensing in Internet of Things (IoT), a large number of low-cost devices with ultra-low power massive communications are required. Heavy cloud computing pressure and low-intelligent traditional front-end hardware are major challenges for extending sensing in IoT applications. While state-of-the-art is focusing on the cloud-edge platform solutions and the optimization of the performed and transmitted data, this paper proposes an intelligent equipment hardware for smart IoT devices. A radiofrequency (RF) neuromorphic spiking sensor is implemented in BiCMOS 55 nm technology, comprising a wake-up receiver with a spiking pre-processing neural system (artificial synapses and neurons). The proposed system can identify bit patterns of two signals modulated using On–Off Keying at a frequency of 2.4 GHz received from two IoT receivers. Moreover, the system can recognize the orientation of the mobile IoT transmitter. This can be achieved based on the output spiking frequency of the neuron responsiveness over the difference between the input powers. Post-layout simulations demonstrate that the orientation of the source can be detected for various distances between the source and the two receivers. Significant performances are obtained with 1.1 nW of total power consumption and 0.7 fJ/conv of energy efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IntroductionIn a significant number of NICUs, mothers are unable to provide enough maternal milk to feed their premature babies, so healthcare workers rely on human milk banks. Unfortunately, this service is not available in many countries, such as Peru, where premature infants receive formula. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of multisensory stimulation on mother's own milk production.MethodsParticipants in this study were postpartum mothers of preterm infants 27–37 weeks gestational age. The participants were assigned to three groups: (1) audiovisual stimulation (SAV) (n = 17), (2) audiovisual and olfactory stimulation (SAVO) (n = 17), and (3) control (n = 16). A questionnaire was used to collect demographic and obstetric data, including a record of mother's own milk volume.ResultsThere was no significant difference between the SAV, SAVO and control groups regarding age, marital status, education level, occupation, number of children, mode of delivery, Apgar and birth weight. Abstract Background A one-off sensory wellbeing workshop has been developed to help patients with eating disorders (ED) manage sensory sensitivities. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the outcomes of the workshop in online versus face-to-face (F2F) formats among a sample of patients with ED. Methods Cumulative link models were applied to the outcome measures (awareness of sensory wellbeing, awareness of strategies to enhance sensory wellbeing, and confidence in managing sensory wellbeing) to test the differences between online and F2F workshops. Participants’ ratings of usefulness of the workshop were also compared between online and F2F workshops. Results A total of 14 workshops (4 online and 10 F2F) were run from 2020 to 2023. All participants reported significant and substantial improvements in all outcome measures. There was no significant difference in outcomes between online and F2F workshops. The majority of patients rated the workshops as useful. Conclusions Both online and face-to-face formats of the sensory workshop led to improvement in sensory wellbeing management for patients with ED. Future studies are warranted to test the impact of the workshop on ED treatment outcomes.

Fatigue, defined as a subjective lack of physical and/or mental energy, is a clinical symptom highly characterizing multiple sclerosis (MS). The present study utilized a novel approach to the study of fatigue, examining first person-mental imagery of the symptom. Eighteen right-handed patients with MS (14F, 4 M, mean age 45.8 ± 8.15 years) were evaluated and were compared to nineteen healthy controls (10F, 9 M, mean age 43.15 ± 8.34 years) Patients were all in relapsing remitting form and no patient had presented relapses in the 6 months prior to inclusion in the study. We evaluated their behavioral performance and fMRI activations. We used an fMRI paradigm used to trigger first person-mental imagery of fatigue, through short sentences describing the principal manifestations of fatigue. Participants were asked to imagine the corresponding sensations (Sensory Imagery, SI). As a control, they had to imagine the visual scenes (Visual Imagery, VI) described in short phrases. They made a vividness rating by pressing the corresponding button.Behaviorally, we found that patients’ mean scores at the Multidimensional Fatigue Symptom Inventory for the general scale, physical scale, and mental scale were significantly higher than healthy controls (p = 0.05, p = 0.002, p = 0.006 respectively), but not for the emotional scale and for vigor scale (p = 0.207, n.s., p = 0.06, n.s.). In the imagery fMRI task, patients were significantly slower (mean reaction times and standard deviation: 2.24 s ± 0.33) than controls (mean reaction times and standard deviation: 1.918 s ± 0.455) for the SI task (Z=-2.058, p = 0.040), while no significant difference was found for the VI task.Regarding brain mapping, our main result is a group by task interaction. The SI task (vs. VI task) in healthy controls (relative to patients) increased activation in the left inferior parietal lobule. These preliminary results indicate that fatigue is related to dysfunctions in higher-order aspects of motor control, given the role of the posterior parietal lobe in motor planning and multisensory integration.

ABSTRACT Aromatoleum aromaticum EbN1T anaerobically degrades phenol, p-cresol, and p-ethylphenol, each via a distinct peripheral pathway. The compound-specific regulation of each pathway is proposed to occur on the transcriptional level in the case of phenol supposedly mediated by the one-component system PheR. To confirm its predicted function, we generated an unmarked, in-frame deletion mutant (ΔpheR). This mutant did not express the ppsA1 gene, which encodes the A1 subunit of phenol-activating phenylphosphate synthase. The expression of ppsA1 was restored by in trans complementation of pheR into the ΔpheR background. The responsiveness to phenol was studied in vivo in benzoate-limited anaerobic cultures by adding, upon benzoate depletion, single defined pulses of phenol (from 100 µM down to 0.1 nM). Time-resolved, targeted transcript profiling by qRT-PCR revealed a response threshold for ppsA1 expression of 30‒50 nM phenol. Notably, ppsA1 expression could not be induced by p-cresol or p-ethylphenol. Conversely, lack of expression was also observed for the additional target genes cmh (p-cresol degradation) and acsA1 (p-ethylphenol degradation) applying phenol or p-ethylphenol as well as phenol or p-cresol as stimuli. Thus, the sensory proteins PheR, PcrS, and EtpR should be highly selective for phenol, p-cresol, and p-ethylphenol, respectively. The implicated incapability of cross-stimulus binding was corroborated by comparing the predicted 3D structural models of the proteins’ sensory domains. While the ligand-binding pockets share the conserved hydroxy group-anchoring histidine and tryptophane, their distal faces in PcrS and EtpR are, compared to PheR, enlarged to accommodate the bulkier methyl (p-cresol) and ethyl group (p-ethylphenol), respectively. IMPORTANCE Aromatic compounds are globally abundant organic molecules with a multitude of natural and anthropogenic sources, underpinning the relevance of their biodegradation. A. aromaticum EbN1T is a well-studied environmental betaproteobacterium specialized on the anaerobic degradation of aromatic compounds. The here studied responsiveness toward phenol in conjunction with the apparent high ligand selectivity (non-promiscuity) of its PheR sensor and those of the related p-cresol (PcrS) and p-ethylphenol (EtpR) sensors are in accord with the substrate-specificity and biochemical distinctiveness of the associated degradation pathways. Furthermore, the present findings advance our general understanding of the substrate-specific regulation of the strain’s remarkable degradation network and of the concentration thresholds below which phenolic compounds become essentially undetectable and as a consequence should escape substantial biodegradation. Furthermore, the findings may inspire biomimetic sensor designs for detecting and quantifying phenolic contaminants in wastewater or environments.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of 6-month aviation practice on the improvement of physical fitness and cognitive abilities of cadet pilots. Materials and methods: Twenty cadet pilots (men) with an average age of 22 from the Polish Air Force Academy were tested. Two tests of effort were conducted: before (test I) and after (test II) practical flights. Test of physical effort relyed on the number of rotations of looping accomplished. When performing rotations on looping, in tests I and II, the percentage level of task performance was assessed using a diagnostic and training device. Tasks for the exerciser were sent wirelessly to the glasses from the operator's position. The heart rate (HR) and blood pressure were measured with a camera-type Microlife AG. Results: In test II, there was a statistically significant improvement in the percentage of task completion (p < 0.01) and an insignificant improvement in the performance of rotations on looping compared to test I. After Test I and II demonstrated a statistically significant increase in HR and systolic blood pressure when compared to before test values. Test II illustrated a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure after effort (p < 0.05) with regard to test I. Conclusion: The study showed that cadet aviation practice ameliorated their physical fitness and cognitive skills, as well as helped to diminish their situational stress, which resulted in a decrease in systolic blood pressure after test II. Human health is facing a host of new threats linked to unbalanced diets, including high-sugar diet (HSD), which contributes to the development of both metabolic and behavioral disorders. Studies have shown that diet-induced metabolic dysfunctions can be transmitted to multiple generations of offspring and exert long-lasting health burden. Meanwhile, whether and how diet-induced behavioral abnormalities can be transmitted to the offspring remains largely unclear. Here, we showed that ancestral HSD exposure suppressed sweet sensitivity and feeding behavior in the offspring in Drosophila. These behavioral deficits were transmitted through the maternal germline and companied by the enhancement of H3K27me3 modifications. PCL-PRC2 complex, a major driver of H3K27 trimethylation, was upregulated by ancestral HSD exposure, and disrupting its activity eliminated the transgenerational inheritance of sweet sensitivity and feeding behavior deficits. Elevated H3K27me3 inhibited the expression of a transcriptional factor Cad and suppressed sweet sensitivity of the sweet-sensing gustatory neurons, reshaping the sweet perception and feeding behavior of the offspring. Taken together, we uncovered a novel molecular mechanism underlying behavioral abnormalities spanning multiple generations of offspring upon ancestral HSD exposure, which would contribute to the further understanding of long-term health risk of unbalanced diet.

This work proposes the design of a low-cost sensory glove system that complements the operation of a 3D-printed mechanical hand prosthesis, providing it with the ability to detect touch, locate it and even measure the intensity of associated forces. Firstly, the production of the prosthetic model was performed using 3D printing, which allowed for quick and cheap production of a robotic hand with the implementation of a mechanical system that allows controlled movements with high performance and with the possibility of easily replacing each piece individually. Secondly, we performed the construction and instrumentation of a complementary sensory mimicry add-on system, focusing on the ability to sense touch as the primary target. Using piezoresistive sensors attached to the palm of the glove, a multi-sensor system was developed that was able to locate and quantify forces exerted on the glove. To try and support this, clinicians and researchers designed a sensory wellbeing workshop to help people become more aware of their sensory wellbeing and teach them strategies to manage their sensory wellbeing. The workshop can be delivered online or face-to-face. This study examined the feedback for online and face-to-face workshops. We found that both formats were helpful for people with eating disorders. Loss of primary neuronal inputs inevitably strikes every neural circuit. The deafferented circuit could propagate, amplify, or mitigate input loss, thus affecting the circuit's output. How the deafferented circuit contributes to the effect on the output is poorly understood because of lack of control over loss of and access to circuit elements. Here, we control the timing and degree of rod photoreceptor ablation in mature mouse retina and uncover compensation. Following loss of half of the rods, rod bipolar cells mitigate the loss by preserving voltage output. Such mitigation allows partial recovery of ganglion cell responses. We conclude that rod death is compensated for in the circuit because ganglion cell responses to stimulation of half of the rods in an unperturbed circuit are weaker than responses after death of half of the rods. The dominant mechanism of such compensation includes homeostatic regulation of inhibition to balance the loss of excitation.

Background: It was explained that there are very few studies that exist in the literature that assessed the reaction time in young adults. Aims and Objectives: The primary objective of the present study was to assess and compare the auditory and visual reaction time among male and female young adults. The secondary objective was to compare auditory and visual reaction time’s right- and left-hand responses. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 male and female young adults were part of the study after obtaining informed consent. Auditory and visual reaction time was assessed using the RT apparatus manufactured by Anand Agencies, Pune. The instrument can assess visual reaction time for the green and red light and auditory reaction time for tone and click sounds of both right- and left-hand responses. Results: Age and weight were significantly different between males and females, whereas height was not significant. The chytrid fungus Blastocladiella emersonii produces spores with swimming tails (zoospores); these cells can sense and swim toward light. Interest in this species stems from ongoing efforts to develop B. emersonii as a model for understanding the evolution of phototaxis and the molecular cell biology of the associated optogenetic circuits. Here, we report a highly contiguous genome assembly and gene annotation of the B. emersonii American Type Culture Collection 22665 strain. We integrate a PacBio long-read library with an Illumina paired-end genomic sequence survey leading to an assembly of 21 contigs totaling 34.27 Mb. Using these data, we assess the diversity of sensory system encoding genes. These analyses identify a rich complement of G-protein-coupled receptors, ion transporters, and nucleotide cyclases, all of which have been diversified by domain recombination and tandem duplication. In many cases, these domain combinations have led to the fusion of a protein domain to a transmembrane domain, tying a putative signaling function to the cell membrane. This pattern is consistent with the diversification of the B. emersonii sensory-signaling systems, which likely plays a varied role in the complex life cycle of this fungus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: It was explained that there are very few studies that exist in the literature that assessed the reaction time in young adults. Aims and Objectives: The primary objective of the present study was to assess and compare the auditory and visual reaction time among male and female young adults. The secondary objective was to compare auditory and visual reaction time's right- and left-hand responses. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 male and female young adults were part of the study after obtaining informed consent. Auditory and visual reaction time was assessed using the RT apparatus manufactured by Anand Agencies, Pune. The instrument can assess visual reaction time for the green and red light and auditory reaction time for tone and click sounds of both right- and left-hand responses. Results: Age and weight were significantly different between males and females, whereas height was not significant. The auditory and visual reaction times were not significantly different between the male and female participants. Neural circuits in the periphery of the visual, auditory, and olfactory systems are believed to use limited resources efficiently to represent sensory information by adapting to the statistical structure of the natural environment. This “efficient coding” principle has been used to explain many aspects of early visual circuits including the distribution of photoreceptors, the mosaic geometry and center-surround structure of retinal receptive fields, the excess OFF pathways relative to ON pathways, saccade statistics, and the structure of simple cell receptive fields in V1. We know less about the extent to which such adaptations may occur in deeper areas of cortex beyond V1. We thus review recent developments showing that the perception of visual textures, which depends on processing in V2 and beyond in mammals, is adapted in rats and humans to the multi-point statistics of luminance in natural scenes. These results suggest that central circuits in the visual brain are adapted for seeing key aspects of natural scenes. We conclude by discussing how adaptation to natural temporal statistics may aid in learning and representing visual objects, and propose two challenges for the future: (1) explaining the distribution of shape sensitivity in the ventral visual stream from the statistics of object shape in natural images, and (2) explaining cell types of the vertebrate retina in terms of feature detectors that are adapted to the spatio-temporal structures of natural stimuli. We also discuss how new methods based on machine learning may complement the normative, principles-based approach to theoretical neuroscience.

Sensory processing is a complex neurological process that receives, integrates, and responds to information from one's own body and environment, which is closely related to survival as well as neurological disorders. Brain-wide networks of sensory processing are difficult to investigate due to their dynamic regulation by multiple brain circuits. Optogenetics, a neuromodulation technique that uses light-sensitive proteins, can be combined with functional magnetic resonance imaging (ofMRI) to measure whole-brain activity. Since ofMRI has increasingly been used for investigating brain circuits underlying sensory processing for over a decade, we systematically reviewed recent ofMRI studies of sensory circuits and discussed the challenges of optogenetic fMRI in rodents. This work proposes the design of a low-cost sensory glove system that complements the operation of a 3D-printed mechanical hand prosthesis, providing it with the ability to detect touch, locate it and even measure the intensity of associated forces. Firstly, the production of the prosthetic model was performed using 3D printing, which allowed for quick and cheap production of a robotic hand with the implementation of a mechanical system that allows controlled movements with high performance and with the possibility of easily replacing each piece individually. Secondly, we performed the construction and instrumentation of a complementary sensory mimicry add-on system, focusing on the ability to sense touch as the primary target. Using piezoresistive sensors attached to the palm of the glove, a multi-sensor system was developed that was able to locate and quantify forces exerted on the glove. This system showed promising results and could be used as a springboard to develop a more complex and multifunctional system in the future.

The darkness of the deep ocean limits the vision of diving predators, except when prey emit bioluminescence. It is hypothesized that deep-diving seals rely on highly developed whiskers to locate their prey. However, if and how seals use their whiskers while foraging in natural conditions remains unknown. We used animal-borne tags to show that free-ranging elephant seals use their whiskers for hydrodynamic prey sensing. Small, cheek-mounted video loggers documented seals actively protracting their whiskers in front of their mouths with rhythmic whisker movement, like terrestrial mammals exploring their environment. Seals focused their sensing effort at deep foraging depths, performing prolonged whisker protraction to detect, pursue, and capture prey. Feedingevent recorders with light sensors demonstrated that bioluminescence contributed to only about 20% of overall foraging success, confirming that whiskers play the primary role in sensing prey. Accordingly, visual prey detection complemented and enhanced prey capture. The whiskers' role highlights an evolutionary alternative to echolocation for adapting to the extreme dark of the deep ocean environment, revealing how sensory abilities shape foraging niche segregation in deep-diving mammals. Mammals typically have mobile facial whiskers, and our study reveals the significant function of whiskers in the natural foraging behavior of a marine predator. We demonstrate the importance of fieldbased sensory studies incorporating multimodality to better understand how multiple sensory systems are complementary in shaping the foraging success of predators. Global aging, the need for continuous high-quality services, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic have caused many sectors to reduce in-person contact between individuals where possible, and to instead use remote communication technology. With increased robot use replacing in-person interventions, ethical considerations arise. The benefits of robotic technology must be weighed against the possibility of harm to humans. The first rules of roboethics were written by Isaac Asimov in 1942, but these pre-date the range of robotic applications used today. There is no central agency for oversight in Canada, although universities and funding organizations have developed guidelines. Roboethical considerations include data use and privacy, the common good, and safety. Humans may potentially form emotional bonds with robots. Loss of jobs to automation is also a concern, particularly when many workers have suffered job losses due to the pandemic. Some health care services have switched to a remote care model, to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Remote hand rehabilitation of patients with brain injury is possible with iManus. Using a portable smart-glove technology, patients practice rehabilitative hand movements that are analyzed remotely through a sensor that offers instantaneous feedback. A therapist monitors their patient's progress remotely and designs individualized programs. This technology benefits humanity by improving access to care for patients globally. The importance of data security and privacy is emphasized. As patient progress will be monitored by a human (a therapist), the safety of iManus is not a concern. Background: Various symptoms have been associated with COVID-19, but little is known about the impacts of COVID-19 on the sensory system, risk factors, and the duration of symptoms. This study assesses olfactory, gustatory, hearing, and vestibular systems after COVID-19. Methods: This cross-sectional, single-center study involved 50 patients one to six months after COVID-19 and reports their patient records and the extent, onset, and duration of olfactory, gustatory, hearing, and balance disorders using questionnaires during and after COVID-19. Sensory symptoms were objectively studied using the following clinical tests after COVID-19 Sniffin' Sticks, taste tests, tone/speech audiometry, and video head impulse test. Results: Post-COVID-19-patients were suffering from olfactory and gustatory impairment for up to six months. According to the Dizziness Handicap Inventory, balance disorders were less noticed: Overall, about 40% of the patients during COVID-19 and nearly all patients recovered within six months. After COVID-19, clinical tests revealed that 75% were suffering from hyposomnia/anosmia, and 20% of all patients reported mild hypogeusia for up to six months. Vestibular disorders and hearing impairment rarely/did not occur. Females were significantly more affected by sensory impairments than males. Conclusions: COVID-19 particularly caused olfactory and gustatory impairment; balance disorders were present too; vestibular and auditory symptoms were negligible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using the power flow equation (PFE), this article investigates mode coupling in step-index (SI) multimode (MM) polymer optical fiber (POF). This equation’s coupling coefficient was initially fine-tuned so that it could appropriately reconstruct previously recorded far-field (FF) power distributions. The equilibrium mode distribution (EMD) and steady-state distribution (SSD) in the SI MM POF were found to be obtained at lengths Lc = 15 m and zs = 41 m, respectively. These lengths are substantially shorter than their glass optical fiber counterparts. Such characterization of the investigated POF can be used in its employment as a part of the communication or sensory system. Namely, the POF’s bandwidth is inverse linear function of fiber length (z−1) below the coupling length Lc. However, it has a z−1/2 dependence beyond this equilibrium length. Thus, the shorter the coupling length Lc, the sooner transition to the regime of slower bandwidth decrease occurs. It is also important to be able to determine a modal distribution at a certain length of the POF employed as a part of optical fiber sensory system.

For an organ to maintain correct architecture and function, its diverse cellular components must coordinate their size and shape. Although cell-intrinsic mechanisms driving homotypic cell-cell coordination are known, it is unclear how cell shape is regulated across heterotypic cells. We find that epithelial cells maintain the shape of neighboring sense-organ glia-neuron units in adult Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Hsp co-chaperone UNC-23/BAG2 prevents epithelial cell shape from deforming, and its loss causes head epithelia to stretch aberrantly during animal movement. In the sense-organ glia, amphid sheath (AMsh), this causes progressive fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR)-dependent disruption of the glial apical cytoskeleton. Resultant glial cell shape alteration causes concomitant shape change in glia-associated neuron endings. Epithelial UNC-23 maintenance of glia-neuron shape is specific both spatially, within a defined anatomical zone, and temporally, in a developmentally critical period. As all molecular components uncovered are broadly conserved across central and peripheral nervous systems, we posit that epithelia may similarly regulate glia-neuron architecture cross-species. Vertebrate organs are arranged in a stereotypic, species-specific position along the animal body plan. Substantial morphological variation exists between related species, especially so in the vastly diversified teleost clade. It is still unclear how tissues, organs and systems can accommodate such diverse scaffolds. Here, we use the distinctive arrangement of neuromasts in the posterior lateral line (pLL) system of medaka fish to address the tissue-interactions defining a pattern. We show that patterning in this peripheral nervous system is established by autonomous organ precursors independent of neuronal wiring. In addition, we target the keratin 15 gene to generate stuck-in-the-midline (siml) mutants, which display epithelial lesions and a disrupted pLL patterning. By using siml/wt chimeras, we determine that the aberrant siml pLL pattern depends on the mutant epithelium, since a wild type epithelium can rescue the siml phenotype. Inducing epithelial lesions by 2-photon laser ablation during pLL morphogenesis phenocopies siml genetic mutants and reveals that epithelial integrity defines the final position of the embryonic pLL neuromasts. Our results using the medaka pLL disentangle intrinsic from extrinsic properties during the establishment of a sensory system. We speculate that intrinsic programs guarantee proper organ morphogenesis, while instructive interactions from surrounding tissues facilitates the accommodation of sensory organs to the diverse body plans found among teleosts. Heatwaves are increasingly common globally and are known to have detrimental impacts on animal morphology and behaviour. These impacts can be severe, especially if heatwaves occur during development, even on animals that can regulate the temperature of their developing young. The onset and duration of heatwaves are stochastic and therefore may affect all or only part of development. In the heterothermic bumblebee Bombus terrestris, elevated temperatures over the entirety of development cause morphological changes in adults, despite their capability to regulate brood temperature. However, the effects of heatwaves that occur during a short period of development are unclear. We test the impact of elevated developmental temperature during the latter fraction of development on the behaviour and morphology of adult worker B. terrestris. We show that exposure to elevated temperature over a portion of late development is sufficient to impair the initial behavioural responses of workers to various sensory stimuli. Despite this, exposure to elevated temperatures during a period of development did not have any significant impact on body or organ size. The negative effect of elevated developmental temperatures was independent of the exposure time, which lasted from 11–20 days at the end of the workers’ developmental period. Thus, heat stress in bumblebees can manifest without morphological indicators and impair critical behavioural responses to relevant sensory stimuli, even if only present for a short period of time at the end of development. This has important implications for our understanding of deleterious climactic events and how we measure indicators of stress in pollinators.

Layer 6 corticothalamic (L6 CT) neurons provide massive input to the thalamus, and these feedback connections enable the cortex to influence its own sensory input by modulating thalamic excitability. However, the functional role(s) feedback serves during sensory processing is unclear. One hypothesis is that CT feedback is under the control of extrasensory signals originating from higher-order cortical areas, yet we know nothing about the mechanisms of such control. It is also unclear whether such regulation is specific to CT neurons with distinct thalamic connectivity. Using mice (either sex) combined with in vitro electrophysiology techniques, optogenetics, and retrograde labeling, we describe studies of vibrissal primary motor cortex (vM1) influences on different CT neurons in the vibrissal primary somatosensory cortex (vS1) with distinct intrathalamic axonal projections. We found that vM1 inputs are highly selective, evoking stronger postsynaptic responses in CT neurons projecting to the dual ventral posterior medial nucleus (VPm) and posterior medial nucleus (POm) located in lower L6a than VPm-only-projecting CT cells in upper L6a. A targeted analysis of the specific cells and synapses involved revealed that the greater responsiveness of Dual CT neurons was due to their distinctive intrinsic membrane properties and synaptic mechanisms. These data demonstrate that vS1 has at least two discrete L6 CT subcircuits distinguished by their thalamic projection patterns, intrinsic physiology, and functional connectivity with vM1. Thyroid hormones exert pleiotropic, essential actions in mammalian, including human, development. These actions depend on provision of thyroid hormones in the circulation but also to a remarkable extent on deiodinase enzymes in target tissues that amplify or deplete the local concentration of the primary active form of the hormone T3 (3,5,3′-triiodothyronine), the high affinity ligand for thyroid hormone receptors. Genetic analyses in mice have revealed key roles for activating (DIO2) and inactivating (DIO3) deiodinases in cell differentiation fates and tissue maturation, ultimately promoting neonatal viability, growth, fertility, brain development, and behavior, as well as metabolic, endocrine, and sensory functions. An emerging paradigm is how the opposing activities of DIO2 and DIO3 are coordinated, providing a dynamic switch that controls the developmental timing of a tissue response, often during neonatal and maturational transitions. A second paradigm is how cell to cell communication within a tissue determines the response to T3. Deiodinases in specific cell types, often strategically located near to blood vessels that convey thyroid hormones into the tissue, can regulate neighboring cell types, suggesting a paracrine-like layer of control of T3 action. Over 1.1 billion individuals are at risk for noise induced hearing loss yet there is no accepted therapy. A long history of research has demonstrated that excessive noise exposure will kill outer hair cells (OHCs). Such observations have fueled the notion that dead OHCs underlie hearing loss. Therefore, previous and current therapeutic approaches are based on preventing the loss of OHCs. However, the relationship between OHC loss and hearing loss is at best a modest correlation. This suggests that in addition to the death of OHCs, other mechanisms may regulate the type and degree of hearing loss. In the current study, we tested the hypothesis that permanent noise-induced-hearing loss is consequent to additional mechanisms beyond the noise dose and the death of OHCs. Hooded male rats were randomly divided into noise and control groups. Morphological and physiological assessments were conducted on both groups. The combined results suggest that beyond OHC loss, the surviving cochlear elements shape sensorineural outcomes, which can be nondeterministic. These findings provide the basis for individualized ototherapeutics that manipulate surviving cellular elements in order to bias cochlear function towards normal hearing even in the presence of dead OHCs.

The pursuit of neuromorphic computing has inspired innovations in artificial sensory and nervous systems. Here, an all‐in‐one, tailorable artificial perception, and transmission nerve (APTN) was developed for mimicking the biological sensory and nervous ability to detect and transmit the location information of mechanical stimulation. The APTN shows excellent reliability with a single triboelectric electrode for the detection of multiple pixels, by employing a gradient thickness dielectric layer and a grid surface structure. The sliding mode is used on the APTN to eliminate the amplitude influence of output signal, such as force, interlayer distance. By tailoring the geometry, an L‐shaped APTN is demonstrated for the application of single‐electrode bionic artificial nerve for 2D detection. In addition, an APTN based prosthetic arm is also fabricated to biomimetically identify and transmit the stimuli location signal to pattern the feedback. With features of low‐cost, easy installation, and good flexibility, the APTN renders as a promising artificial sensory and nervous system for artificial intelligence, human–machine interface, and robotics applications.

Abstract Electrophorus spp. generate high-voltage electric discharges for defense and hunting, and low-voltage electric discharges (as other Gymnotiformes) for electrolocation and communication. Despite intense interest in the unusual electrogenic and electroreceptive capacities of electric eels, the other sensory systems of Electrophorus spp. are relatively poorly known. Here we describe the ontogenetic development and organization of the cephalic lateral-line canals in the lowland electric eel, Electrophorus varii. Preserved specimens of larvae, juveniles, and adults were examined to describe the spatial distribution of the canals and pores. Ontogenetic shifts of the cephalic lateral line formation were observed for each canal and support a hypothesis of non-synchronized development. The morphogenesis of cephalic canals in larvae and juveniles begins just before the onset of exogenous feeding. In adults, the cephalic sensory canals are formed separately from the skull and overlay cranial and mandibular bones and muscles. This study provides the first detailed description of the development and organization of the cephalic lateral-line system in Electrophorus varii.

The betaproteobacterial degradation specialist Aromatoleum aromaticum EbN1T utilizes several plant-derived 3-phenylpropanoids coupled to denitrification. In vivo responsiveness of A. aromaticum EbN1T was studied by exposing nonadapted cells to distinct pulses (spanning 100μM to 0.1nM) of 3-phenylpropanoate, cinnamate, 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propanoate, or p-coumarate. Time-resolved, targeted transcript analyses via quantitative reverse transcription-PCR of four selected 3-phenylpropanoid genes revealed a response threshold of 30 to 50 nM for p-coumarate and 1 to 10 nM for the other three tested 3-phenylpropanoids. At these concentrations, transmembrane effector equilibration is attained by passive diffusion rather than active uptake via the ABC transporter, presumably serving the studied 3-phenylpropanoids as well as benzoate. Highly substrate-specific enzyme formation (EbA5316 to EbA5321 [EbA5316-21]) for the shared peripheral degradation pathway putatively involves the predicted TetR-type transcriptional repressor PprR. Accordingly, relative transcript abundances of ebA5316-21 are lower in succinate- and benzoate-grown wild-type cells than in an unmarked in-frame ΔpprR mutant. In trans-complementation of pprR into the ΔpprR background restored wild-type-like transcript levels. When adapted to p-coumarate, the three genotypes had relative transcript abundances similar to those of ebA5316-21 despite a significantly longer lag phase of the pprR-complemented mutant (~100-fold higher pprR transcript level than the wild type). Notably, transcript levels of ebA5316-21 were ~10- to 100-fold higher in p-coumarate-than succinate- or benzoate-adapted cells across all three genotypes. This indicates the additional involvement of an unknown transcriptional regulator. Furthermore, physiological, transcriptional, and (aromatic) acyl-coenzyme A ester intermediate analyses of the wild type and ΔpprR mutant grown with binary substrate mixtures suggest a mode of catabolite repression of superior order to PprR. Using a portable smart-glove technology, patients practice rehabilitative hand movements that are analyzed remotely through a sensor that offers instantaneous feedback. A therapist monitors their patient’s progress remotely and designs individualized programs. This technology benefits humanity by improving access to care for patients globally. The importance of data security and privacy is emphasized. As patient progress will be monitored by a human (a therapist), the safety of iManus is not a concern. The principles discussed in this paper can help researchers and engineers design ethical robotics in remote health care settings.

Swimming crabs have a characteristic fifth pair of legs that are flattened into paddles for swimming purposes. The dactyl of these legs bears a thick seta along its edge. The chemoreceptive and feeding properties of the seta are supported with scientific evidence; however, there is no available data on the sensitivity of the setae in portunid crabs. The underlying mechanisms of the chemo- and mechano-sensitivity of appendages and their involvement in feeding activities of the mud crab (Scylla paramamosain) were investigated using electrocardiography and behavioural assay, which focused on the responses of the mud crab to chemical and touch stimulus. Electrocardiography revealed the sensory properties of the appendages. The dactyls of swimming legs and the antennules were chemosensitive, but not mechanosensitive and vice versa for the antennae. However, the mouthparts, claws, and walking legs were chemo- and mechanosensitive. Only the chemosensitive appendages, including the swimming legs, were directly involved in feeding. The flattened dactyls of the swimming legs were more efficient than the pointed dactyls of the walking legs in detecting the food organism crawling on the substrate. The structural features enhanced the capacity of the crab in coming into contact with scattered food items. This study revealed that the swimming legs are important appendages for feeding in the mud crab.

Retrograde dyes are often used in basic research to investigate neuronal innervations of an organ. This article describes the experimental data on the application of retrograde dyes on the mouse heart in vivo and on the cardiac or neuronal cultures in vitro. By providing this information, cardiac or inneinnervations can be evaluated in vivo. Therefore, unknown cellular and molecular mechanisms and systemic interactions in the body can be investigated. In particular, we provided practical tips to lower mortality risks following the cardiac surgery and evaluated the staining capacity and fluorescent characteristics of the Di-8-ANEPPQ dye in the cardiac tissue and cell cultures. First, primary cultures of mouse nodose ganglia (NG) neurons and mouse neonatal cardiomyocytes were stained with Di-8-ANEPPQ. The Di-8-ANEPPQ signal from live cultures were visualized using spinning disk confocal microscopy to verify the lipophilic and fluorescent labeling capacity of Di-8-ANEPPQ. Next, the excitation and emission data of Di-8-ANEPPQ were collected between 415 nm and 690 nm using power spectrum module of confocal microscopy. This spectrum analysis could be useful for the researchers who plan to use Di-8-ANEPPQ in combination with other fluorescent dyes to eliminate any florescent overlap. In order to label the heart tissue with tracer dyes Di-8-ANEPPQ or DiI in vivo, the heart was exposed without damaging lungs or other tissues following anesthetization, then the retrograde dye was applied as a paste for DiI or injected to the apex of the heart for Di-8-ANEPPQ and the operation area was sutured. The surgical procedure required intubation to control the respiratory reflex without the need to perform a tracheotomy and yielded high viability. Following labeling the heart in vivo, the heart was dissected, and images of injection area were captured using confocal microscopy. All fluorescent images of Di-8-ANEPPQ labeled cells were analyzed by using the Fiji software. Overall, these data provide applicable data to other investigators to trace the sensory neurons innervating not only the heart but also other organs using Di-8-ANEPPQ. These data support the original research article titled “Evaluation of bilateral cardiac afferent distribution at the spinal and vagal ganglia by retrograde labeling” that was accepted for publication in Brain Research Journal [1].
