We present the results of a broad-band X-ray study of the enigmatic Be star Gamma Cassiopeiae (herein gamma Cas) based on observations made with both the Suzaku and INTEGRAL observatories. gamma Cas has long been recognized as the prototypical example of a small subclass of Be stars with moderately strong X-ray emission dominated by a hot thermal component in the 0.5-12 keV energy range Lx ~ 10^32 - 10^33 erg s^-1. This places them at the high end of the known luminosity distribution for stellar emission, but several orders of magnitude below typical accretion powered Be X-ray binaries. The INTEGRAL observations spanned an 8 year baseline and represent the deepest measurement to date at energies above ~50 keV. We find that the INTEGRAL data are consistent within statistics to a constant intensity source above 20 keV, with emission extending up to ~100 keV and that searches for all of the previously reported periodicities of the system at lower energies led to null results. We further find that our combined Suzaku and INTEGRAL spectrum, which we suggest is the most accurate broad-band X-ray measurement of gamma Cas to date, is fitted extremely well with a thermal plasma emission model with a single absorption component. We found no compelling need for an additional non-thermal high-energy component. Variability at all observed wavelengths is a distinctive property of AGN. Hard X-rays provide us with a view of the innermost regions of AGN, mostly unbiased by absorption along the line of sight. Swift/BAT offers the unique opportunity to follow, on time scales of days to years and with a regular sampling, the 14-195 keV emission of the largest AGN sample available up to date for this kind of investigation. We study the amplitude of the variations, and their dependence on sub-class and on energy, for a sample of 110 radio quiet and radio loud AGN selected from the BAT 58-month survey. About 80% of the AGN in the sample are found to exhibit significant variability on months to years time scales, radio loud sources being the most variable. The amplitude of the variations and their energy dependence are incompatible with variability being driven at hard X-rays by changes of the absorption column density. In general, the variations in the 14-24 and 35-100 keV bands are well correlated, suggesting a common origin of the variability across the BAT energy band. However, radio quiet AGN display on average 10% larger variations at 14-24 keV than at 35-100 keV and a softer-when-brighter behavior for most of the Seyfert galaxies with detectable spectral variability on month time scale. In addition, sources with harder spectra are found to be more variable than softer ones. These properties are generally consistent with a variable power law continuum, in flux and shape, pivoting at energies >~ 50 keV, to which a constant reflection component is superposed. When the same time scales are considered, the timing properties of AGN at hard X-rays are comparable to those at lower energies, with at least some of the differences possibly ascribable to components contributing differently in the two energy domains (e.g., reflection, absorption)., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We describe an ongoing effort using the Fermi Large Area Telescope to search for gamma-ray emission from a source sample derived from published surveys of variable or transient galactic radio sources., Comment: 2012 Fermi Symposium proceedings - eConf C121028

Motivated by the recent proposal that one can obtain quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) by photon echoes manifesting as non-trivial features in the autocorrelation function (ACF), we study the ACFs of the light curves of three accreting black hole candidates and a neutron star already known to exhibit QPOs namely, GRS 1915+105, XTE J1550-564, XTE J1859+226 and Cygnus X-2. We compute and focus on the form of the ACFs in search of systematics or specific temporal properties at the time scales associated with the known QPO frequencies in comparison with the corresponding PDS. Even within our small object sample we find both similarities as well as significant and subtle differences in the form of the ACFs both amongst black holes and between black holes and neutron stars to warrant a closer look at the QPO phenomenon in the time domain: The QPO features manifest as an oscillatory behavior of the ACF at lags near zero; the oscillation damps exponentially on time scales equal to the inverse QPO width to a level of a percent or so. In black holes this oscillatory behavior is preserved and easily discerned at much longer lags while this is not the case for the neutron star system Cyg X-2. The ACF of GRS 1915+105 provides an exception to this general behavior in that its decay is linear in time indicating an undamped oscillation of coherent phase. We present simple ad hoc models that reproduce these diverse time domain behaviors and we speculate that their origin is the phase coherence of the underlying oscillation. It appears plausible that time domain analyses, complementary to the more common frequency domain ones, could impose tighter constraints and provide clues for the driving mechanisms behind the QPO phenomenon., Comment: accepted to A&A, 13 pages, Figs.1-5

AGN exhibit complex hard X-ray spectra. Our current understanding is that the emission is dominated by inverse Compton processes which take place in the corona above the accretion disk, and that absorption and reflection in a distant absorber play a major role. These processes can be directly observed through the shape of the continuum, the Compton reflection hump around 30 keV, and the iron fluorescence line at 6.4 keV. We demonstrate the capabilities of Simbol-X to constrain complex models for cases like MCG-05-23-016, NGC 4151, NGC 2110, and NGC 4051 in short (10 ksec) observations. We compare the simulations with recent observations on these sources by INTEGRAL, Swift and Suzaku. The Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-05-23-016 has been shown to exhibit a complex X-ray spectrum. This source has moderate X-ray luminosity, hosts a comparably low-mass black hole, but accretes at a high Eddington rate, and allows us to study a super massive black hole in an early stage. Three observations of the INTEGRAL satellite simultaneous with pointed Swift/XRT observations performed from December 2006 to June 2007 are used in combination with public data from the INTEGRAL archive to study the variability of the hard X-ray components and to generate a high-quality spectrum from 1 to 150 keV. The AGN shows little variability in the hard X-ray spectrum, with some indication of a variation in the high-energy cut-off energy ranging from 50 keV to >>100 keV, with an electron plasma temperature in the 10 - 90 keV range. The reflection component is not evident and, if present, the reflected fraction can be constrained to R < 0.3 for the combined data set. Comparison to previous observations shows that the reflection component has to be variable. No variability in the UV and optical range is observed on a time scale of 1.5 years. The hard X-ray spectrum of MCG-05-23-016 appears to be stable with the luminosity and underlying power law varying moderately and the optical/UV flux staying constant. The spectral energy distribution appears to be similar to that of Galactic black hole systems, e.g. XTE 1118+480 in the low state. The AGN exhibits a remarkably high Eddington ratio of L(bol)/L(Edd)> 0.8 (or L(bol)/L(Edd) > 0.1, if we consider a higher mass of the central engine) and, at the same time, a low cut-off energy around 70 keV. Objects like MCG-05-23-016 might indicate the early stages of super massive black holes, in which a strong accretion flow feeds the central engine., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Using archival RXTE data we derive the 2-16 keV Fourier-resolved spectra of the Atoll source 4U 1728-34 in a sequence of its timing states as its low QPO frequency spans the range between 6 and 94 Hz. The increase in the QPO frequency accompanies a spectral transition of the source from its island to its banana states. The banana-states' Fourier-resolved spectra are well fitted by a single blackbody component with $kT \sim 2-3$ keV depending on the source position in the color -- color diagram and the Fourier frequency, thus indicating that this spectral component is responsible for the source variability on these timescales. This result is in approximate agreement with similar behavior exhibited by the Z sources, suggesting that, as in that case, the boundary layer -- the likely source of the thermal component -- is supported by radiation pressure. Furthermore, it is found that the iron line at $\sim$6.6 keV, clearly present in the averaged spectra, not apparent within the limitations of our measurements in the frequency-resolved spectra irrespective of the frequency range. This would indicate that this spectral component exhibits little variability on time scales comprising the interval $10^{-2}-10^2$ seconds. In the island state the single blackbody model proved inadequate, particularly notable in our lowest frequency band ($0.008-0.8$ Hz). An absorbed powerlaw or an additive blackbody plus hard powerlaw model was required to obtain a satisfactory fit. The black-hole X-ray binary transient GRO J1655-40 underwent an outburst beginning in early 2005. We present the results of our multi-wavelength observational campaign to study the early outburst spectral and temporal evolution, which combines data from X-ray (RXTE, INTEGRAL), radio (VLA) and optical (ROTSE, SMARTS) instruments. During the reported period the source left quiescence and went through four major accreting black hole states: low-hard, hard intermediate, soft intermediate and high-soft. We investigated dipping behavior in the RXTE band and compare our results to the 1996-1997 case, when the source was predominantly in the high-soft state, finding significant differences. We consider the evolution of the low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations and find that the frequency strongly correlates with the spectral characteristics, before shutting off prior to the transition to the high-soft state. We model the broad-band high-energy spectrum in the context of empirical models, as well as more physically motivated thermal and bulk-motion Comptonization and Compton reflection models. RXTE and INTEGRAL data together support a statistically significant high energy cut-off in the energy spectrum at 100~200 keV during the low-hard state. The RXTE data alone also show it very significantly during the transition, but cannot see one in the high-soft state spectra. We consider radio, optical and X-ray connections in the context of possible synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton origins of X-ray emission in low-hard and intermediate states. We have compiled a complete extragalactic sample based on 25,000 deg^2 to a limiting flux of 3E-11 ergs/cm**2/sec (7,000 deg^2 to a flux limit of 1E-11 ergs/cm**2/sec) in the 20 - 40 keV band with INTEGRAL. We have constructed a detailed exposure map to compensate for effects of non-uniform exposure. The flux-number relation is best described by a power-law with a slope of alpha = 1.66+-0.11. The integration of the cumulative flux per unit area leads to f = 2.6E-10 ergs/cm**2/sec/sr, which is about 1% of the known 20 - 40 keV X-ray background. We present the first luminosity function of AGNs in the 20-40 keV energy range, based on 38 extragalactic objects detected by the imager IBIS/ISGRI on-board INTEGRAL. The luminosity function shows a smoothly connected two power-law form, with an index of gamma_1 = 0.8 below, and gamma_2 = 2.1 above the turn-over luminosity of L* = 2.4E43 ergs/sec. The emissivity of all INTEGRAL AGNs per unit volume is W(> 1E41 ergs/sec) = 2.8E38 ergs/sec/Mpc**3. These results are consistent with those derived in the 2 - 20 keV energy band and do not show a significant contribution by Compton-thick objects. Because the sample used in this study is truly local (average z = 0.022), only limited conclusions can be drawn for the evolution of AGNs in this energy band., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have obtained Fourier-resolved spectra of the black-hole binary 4U 1543-47 in the canonical states (high/soft, very high, intermediate and low/hard) observed in this source during the decay of an outburst that took place in 2002. Our objective is to investigate the variability of the spectral components generally used to describe the energy spectra of black-hole systems, namely a disk component, a power-law component attributed to Comptonization by a hot corona and the contribution of the iron line due to reprocessing of the high energy (E > 7 keV) radiation. We find that i) the disk component is not variable on time scales shorter than ~100 seconds, ii) the reprocessing emission as manifest by the variability of the Fe Kalpha line responds to the primary radiation variations down to time scales of ~70 ms in the high and very-high states, but longer than 2 s in the low state, iii) the low-frequency QPOs are associated with variations of the X-ray power law spectral component and not to the disk component and iv) the spectra corresponding to the highest Fourier frequency are the hardest (show the flatter spectra) at a given spectral state. These results question models that explain the observed power spectra as due to modulations of the accretion rate alone, as such models do not provide any apparent reason for a Fourier frequency dependence of the power law spectral indices., Comment: 21 pages, 2 tables, 5 figures. We present a measurement of the sky distribution of positronium (Ps) annihilation continuum emission obtained with the SPI spectrometer on board ESA's INTEGRAL observatory. The only sky region from which significant Ps continuum emission is detected is the Galactic bulge. The Ps continuum emission is circularly symmetric about the Galactic centre, with an extension of about 8 deg FWHM. Within measurement uncertainties, the sky distribution of the Ps continuum emission is consistent with that found by us for the 511 keV electron-positron annihilation line using SPI. Assuming that 511 keV line and Ps continuum emission follow the same spatial distribution, we derive a Ps fraction of 0.92 +/- 0.09. These results strengthen our conclusions regarding the origin of positrons in our Galaxy based on observations of the 511 keV line. In particular, they suggest that the main source of Galactic positrons is associated with an old stellar population, such as Type Ia supernovae, classical novae, or low-mass X-ray binaries. We present results based on the first INTEGRAL AGN catalogue. The catalogue includes 42 AGN, of which 10 are Seyfert 1, 17 are Seyfert 2, and 9 are intermediate Seyfert 1.5. The fraction of blazars is rather small with 5 detected objects, and only one galaxy cluster and no star-burst galaxies have been detected so far. The sample consists of bright (fx > 5e-12 erg/cm**2/s), low luminosity (L = 2e43 erg/s), local (z = 0.020) AGN. Although the sample is not flux limited, we find a ratio of obscured to unobscured AGN of 1.5 - 2.0, consistent with luminosity dependent unified models for AGN. Only four Compton-thick AGN are found in the sample. We present Swift observations of the black hole X-ray transient, GRO J1655-40, during the recent outburst. With its multiwavelength capabilities and flexible scheduling, Swift is extremely well-suited for monitoring the spectral evolution of such an event. GRO J1655-40 was observed on 20 occasions and data were obtained by all instruments for the majority of epochs. X-ray spectroscopy revealed spectral shapes consistent with the ``canonical'' low/hard, high/soft and very high states at various epochs. The soft X-ray source (0.3-10 keV) rose from quiescence and entered the low/hard state, when an iron emission line was detected. The soft X-ray source then softened and decayed, before beginning a slow rebrightening and then spending $\sim 3$ weeks in the very high state. The hard X-rays (14-150 keV) behaved similarly but their peaks preceded those of the soft X-rays by up to a few days; in addition, the average hard X-ray flux remained approximately constant during the slow soft X-ray rebrightening, increasing suddenly as the source entered the very high state. These observations indicate (and confirm previous suggestions) that the low/hard state is key to improving our understanding of the outburst trigger and mechanism. The optical/ultraviolet lightcurve behaved very differently from that of the X-rays; this might suggest that the soft X-ray lightcurve is actually a composite of the two known spectral components, one gradually increasing with the optical/ultraviolet emission (accretion disc) and the other following the behaviour of the hard X-rays (jet and/or corona)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the first INTEGRAL AGN catalog, based on observations performed from launch of the mission in October 2002 until January 2004. The catalog includes 42 AGN, of which 10 are Seyfert 1, 17 are Seyfert 2, and 9 are intermediate Seyfert 1.5. The fraction of blazars is rather small with 5 detected objects, and only one galaxy cluster and no star-burst galaxies have been detected so far. A complete subset consists of 32 AGN with a significance limit of 7 sigma in the INTEGRAL/ISGRI 20-40 keV data. Although the sample is not flux limited, the distribution of sources shows a ratio of obscured to unobscured AGN of 1.5 - 2.0, consistent with luminosity dependent unified models for AGN. Only four Compton-thick AGN are found in the sample. Based on the INTEGRAL data presented here, the Seyfert 2 spectra are slightly harder (Gamma = 1.95 +- 0.01) than Seyfert 1.5 (Gamma = 2.10 +- 0.02) and Seyfert 1 (Gamma = 2.11 +- 0.05)., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the first INTEGRAL observations of the type 1.5 Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151. Combining several INTEGRAL observations performed during 2003, totaling about 400 ks of exposure time, allows us to study the spectrum in the 2 - 300 keV range. The measurements presented here reveal an overall spectrum from X-rays up to soft gamma-rays that can be described by an absorbed (NH = 6.9e22 1/cm**2) model based on a Compton continuum from a hot electron population (kT = 94 keV) from an optically thick (tau = 1.3) corona, reflected on cold material (R=0.7), consistent with earlier claims. The time resolved analysis shows little variation of the spectral parameters over the duration of the INTEGRAL observations. The comparison with CGRO/OSSE data shows that the same spectral model can be applied over a time span of 15 years, with flux variations of the order of a factor of 2 and changes in the underlying continuum reflected by the temperature of the electron population (kT = 50 - 100 keV). When modeled with an exponentially cut-off power law plus Compton reflection this results in photon indices ranging from Gamma = 1.5 to Gamma = 1.9 and a cut-off energy in the range 100 - 500 keV., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The well known black-hole X-ray binary transient XTE J1550-564 underwent an outburst during the spring of 2003 which was substantially underluminous in comparison to previous periods of peak activity in that source. In addition, our analysis shows that it apparently remained in the hard spectral state over the duration of that outburst. This is again in sharp contrast to major outbursts of that source in 1998/1999 during which it exhibited an irregular light curve, multiple state changes and collimated outflows. This leads us to classify it as a "failed outburst." We present the results of our study of the spring 2003 event including light curves based on observations from both INTEGRAL and RXTE. In addition, we studied the evolution of the high-energy 3-300 keV continuum spectrum using data obtained with three main instruments on INTEGRAL. These spectra are consistent with typical low-hard-state thermal Comptonization emission. We also consider the 2003 event in the context of a multi-source, multi-event period-peak luminosity diagram in which it is a clear outlyer. We then consider the possibility that the 2003 event was due to a discrete accretion event rather than a limit-cycle instablility. In that context, we apply model fitting to derive the timescale for viscous propagation in the disk, and infer some physical characteristics., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, to be published in The Astrophysical Journal

The Crab region was observed several times by INTEGRAL for calibration purposes. This paper aims at underlining the systematic interactions between (i) observations of this reference source, (ii) in-flight calibration of the instrumental response and (iii) the development and validation of the analysis tools of the SPI spectrometer. It first describes the way the response is produced and how studies of the Crab spectrum lead to improvements and corrections in the initial response. Then, we present the tools which were developed to extract spectra from the SPI observation data and finally a Crab spectrum obtained with one of these methods, to show the agreement with previous experiments. The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE), aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO), provided a record of the low-energy gamma-ray sky (20-1000 keV) between 1991 April and 2000 May (9.1y). Using the Earth Occultation Technique to extract flux information, a catalog of sources using data from the BATSE large area detectors has been prepared. The first part of the catalog consists of results from the monitoring of 58 sources, mostly Galactic. For these sources, we have included tables of flux and spectral data, and outburst times for transients. Light curves (or flux histories) have been placed on the world wide web. We then performed a deep-sampling of 179 objects (including the aforementioned 58 objects) combining data from the entire 9.1y BATSE dataset. Source types considered were primarily accreting binaries, but a small number of representative active galaxies, X-ray-emitting stars, and supernova remnants were also included. The deep sample results include definite detections of 83 objects and possible detections of 36 additional objects. The definite detections spanned three classes of sources: accreting black hole and neutron star binaries, active galaxies and supernova remnants. Flux data for the deep sample are presented in four energy bands: 20-40, 40-70, 70-160, and 160-430 keV. The limiting average flux level (9.1 y) for the sample varies from 3.5 to 20 mCrab (5 sigma) between 20 and 430 keV, depending on systematic error, which in turn is primarily dependent on the sky location. To strengthen the credibility of detection of weaker sources (5-25 mCrab), we generated Earth occultation images, searched for periodic behavior using FFT and epoch folding methods, and critically evaluated the energy-dependent emission in the four flux bands., Comment: 64 pages, 17 figures, abstract abridged, Accepted by ApJS

We report multiwavelength observations of the soft X-ray transient (SXT) XTE J1118+480, which we observed with UKIRT, HST, RXTE, EUVE and many other instruments and facilities. Adding radio (Ryle Telescope, VLA), sub-millimeter (JCMT) and X-ray (Chandra and SAX) data from the literature, we assembled the most complete spectral energy distribution (SED) of this source yet published. We followed the evolution of this source for 1 year, including 6 observations performed during the outburst, and one observation at the end of the outburst. Because of XTE J1118+480's unusually high galactic latitude, it suffers from very low extinction, and its SED is near-complete, including EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) observations. XTE J1118+480 exhibits an unusually low low-hard state (estimated inner radius 350Rs) and a strong non-thermal contribution in the radio to optical domain, which is likely to be due to synchrotron emission. We discuss the interstellar column density and show that it is low, between 0.80 and 1.30 x 10^20 cm-2. We analyse the evolution of the SED during the outburst, including the contributions from the companion star, the accretion disc, the outflow, and relating irradiation and variability of the source in different bands to the SED. We find no significant spectral variability during the outburst evolution, consistent with the presence of a steady outflow. Analysis of its outflow to accretion energy ratio suggests that the microquasar XTE J1118+480 is analogous to radio-quiet quasars. This, combined with the inverted spectrum from radio to optical, makes XTE J1118+480 very similar to other microquasar sources, e.g. GRS 1915+105 and GX 339-4 in their low/hard state. We model the high-energy emission with a hot disc model, and discuss different accretion models for XTE J1118+480's broad band spectrum., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an X-ray spectral and timing analysis of 4U 1543-47 during its 2002 outburst based on 49 pointed observations obtained using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The outburst reached a peak intensity of 4.2 Crab in the 2-12 keV band and declined by a factor of 32 throughout the month-long observation. A 21.9 +- 0.6 mJy radio flare was detected at 1026.75 MHz two days before the X-ray maximum; the radio source was also detected late in the outburst, after the X-ray source entered the low hard state. The X-ray light curve exhibits the classic shape of a rapid rise and an exponential decay. The spectrum is soft and dominated by emission from the accretion disk. The continuum is fit with a multicolor disk blackbody (kT_{max} = 1.04 keV) and a power-law (Gamma ~ 2.7). Midway through the decay phase, a strong low-frequency QPO (nu = 7.3-8.1 Hz) was present for several days. The spectra feature a broad Fe K alpha line that is asymmetric, suggesting that the line is due to relativistic broadening rather than Comptonization. Relativistic Laor models provide much better fits to the line than non-relativistic Gaussian models, particularly near the beginning and end of our observations. The line fits yield estimates for the inner disk radius that are within 6 R_g; this result and additional evidence indicates that this black hole may have a non-zero angular momentum., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 17 pages, 10 figures, uses emulateapj.cls and apjfonts.sty

GRB030320 is the 5th Gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected by INTEGRAL in the field of view (FoV). It is so far the GRB with the largest off-axis angle with respect to the INTEGRAL pointing direction, near to the edge of the FoV of both main instruments, IBIS and SPI. Nevertheless, it was possible to determine its position and to extract spectra and fluxes. The GRB nature of the event was confirmed by an IPN triangulation. It is a ~ 60 s long GRB with two prominent peaks separated by ~ 35 s. The spectral shape of the GRB is best represented by a single power law with a photon index Gamma ~ 1.7. The peak flux in the 20 - 200 keV band is determined to ~ 5.7 photons cm-2 s-1 and the GRB fluence to 1.1 x 10-5 erg cm-2. Analysing the spectral evolution of the GRB, a ``hard-to-soft'' behaviour emerges. A search for an optical counterpart has been carried out, but none was found., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. The transient black hole binary XTE J1118+480 exhibited dramatic rapid variability at all wavelengths which were suitably observed during its 2000 April-July outburst. We examine time-resolved X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and infrared data spanning the plateau phase of the outburst. We find that both X-ray and infrared bands show large amplitude variability. The ultraviolet and optical variability is more subdued, but clearly correlated with that seen in the X-rays. The ultraviolet, at least, appears to be dominated by the continuum, although the lines are also variable. Using the X-ray variations as a reference point, we find that the UV variability at long wavelengths occurs later than that at short wavelengths. Uncertainty in HST timing prohibits a determination of the absolute lag with respect to the X-rays, however. The transfer function is clearly not a delta-function, exhibiting significant repeatable structure. For the main signal we can rule out an origin in reprocessing on the companion star - the lack of variation in the lags is not consistent with this given a relatively high orbital inclination. Weak reprocessing from the disc and/or companion star may be present, but is not required, and another component must dominate the variability. This could be variable synchrotron emission correlated with X-ray variability, consistent with our earlier interpretation of the IR flux as due to synchrotron emission rather than thermal disc emission. In fact the broad-band energy distribution of the variability from IR to X-rays is consistent with expectations of optically thin synchrotron emission. We also follow the evolution of the low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillation in X-rays, UV, and optical. We present HST, RXTE, and UKIRT observations of the broad band spectra of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1859+226 during the decline from its 1999-2000 outburst. Our UV spectra define the 2175A interstellar absorption feature very well and based on its strength we estimate E(B-V)=0.58+/-0.12. Hence we deredden our spectra and follow the evolution of the spectral energy distribution on the decline from outburst. We find that the UV and optical data, and the X-ray thermal component when detectable, can be fit with a simple blackbody model of an accretion disc heated by internal viscosity and X-ray irradiation, and extending to close to the last stable orbit around the black hole, although the actual inner radius cannot be well constrained. During the decline we see the disc apparently evolving from a model with the edge dominated by irradiative heating towards one where viscous heating is dominant everywhere. The outer disc radius also appears to decrease during the decline; we interpret this as evidence of a cooling wave moving inwards and discuss its implications for the disc instability model. Based on the normalisation of our spectral fits we estimate a likely distance range of 4.6-8.0kpc, although a value outside of this range cannot securely be ruled out., Comment: 10 pages including figures. We report multiwavelength observations of the two soft X-ray transients (SXTs) XTE J1859+226 and XTE J1118+480, which we observed with HST, RXTE and UKIRT. The two sources exhibited very different behaviour. XTE J1859+226 showed a thermal-viscous disc instability outburst modified by irradiation. XTE J1118+480, which we also observed with EUVE since it is located at a very high galactic latitude and suffers from very low extinction, is much more unusual. It exhibits i) a low X-ray to optical flux ratio and ii) a strong non-thermal contribution throughout the spectrum, which is likely to be due to synchrotron emission. The X-ray nova XTE J1118+480 suffers minimal extinction (b = 62 degrees) and therefore represents an outstanding opportunity for multiwavelength studies. Hynes et al. (2000) conducted the first such study, which was centered on 2000 April 8 using UKIRT, EUVE, HST and RXTE. On 2000 April 18, the Chandra X-ray Observatory obtained data coincident with a second set of observations using all of these same observatories. A 30 ks grating observation using Chandra yielded a spectrum with high resolution and sensitivity covering the range 0.24-7 keV. Our near-simultaneous observations cover approximately 80% of the electromagnetic spectrum from the infrared to hard X-rays. The UV/X-ray spectrum of XTE J1118+480 consists of two principal components. The first of these is an approximately 24 eV thermal component which is due to an accretion disk with a large inner disk radius: > 35 Schwarzschild radii. The second is a quasi power-law component that was recorded with complete spectral coverage from 0.4-160 keV. A model for this two-component spectrum is presented in a companion paper by Esin et al. We report here on multiwavelength observations of the two new soft X-ray transients (SXTs) XTE J1859+226 and XTE J1118+480, which we observed with HST/RXTE/UKIRT. We present multiwavelength observations of the newly discovered X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 obtained in the rising phase of the 2000 April outburst. This source is located at unusually high Galactic latitude and in a very low absorption line of sight. This made the first EUVE spectroscopy of an X-ray transient outburst possible. Together with our HST, RXTE, and UKIRT data this gives unprecedented spectral coverage. We find the source in the low hard state. The flat IR-UV spectrum appears to be a combination of optically thick disk emission and flat spectrum emission, possibly synchrotron, while at higher energies, including EUV, a typical low hard state power-law is seen. EUVE observations reveal no periodic modulation, suggesting an inclination low enough that no obscuration by the disk rim occurs. We discuss the nature of the source and this outburst and conclude that it may be more akin to mini-outbursts seen in GRO J0422+32 than to a normal X-ray transient outburst., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, replaced with accepted version. We report the discovery of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at roughly 187 Hz and 150 Hz in the X-ray intensity of X-ray nova XTE J1859+226. The source was observed during a recent outburst with RXTE. Besides these high-frequency QPOs, we have also detected QPOs (and sometimes their harmonics) at 6--7 Hz, and significant broad-band variability at low frequencies. These properties, as well as the observed hard X-ray spectrum, make XTE J1859+226 a black hole candidate (BHC). The detection of QPOs at two distinct frequencies $\gtrsim 100$ Hz in two observations separated by about 4 hours provide additional insights into the high-frequency QPO phenomenon in BHCs. The importance lies in the proposed interpretations which invariably involve the effects of strong gravity near a black hole. We compare our results to those of other BHCs, and discuss the impact of the observational data on the models in a global context., Comment: To appear in ApJ Letters

We report on the results of a campaign to observe the SXT GRO J1655-40 in outburst using HST, XTE and GRO and AAT. This outburst was qualitatively quite different to other SXT outbursts and to previous outbursts of this source. The onset of hard X-ray activity occurred very slowly, over several months and was delayed relative to the soft X-ray rise. During this period, the optical fluxes declined steadily. This apparent anti-correlation is not consistent with the standard disc instability model of SXT outbursts, nor is it expected if the optical output is dominated by reprocessing. Using our derived reddening we find that our dereddened spectra are dominated by a component peaking in the optical with the expected nu^1/3 disc spectrum seen only in the UV. We consider possible interpretations of this spectrum in terms of thermal emission from the outer accretion disc and/or secondary star, both with and without X-ray irradiation, and also as non-thermal optical synchrotron emission from a compact self-absorbed central source. The X-ray spectra broadly resemble the high-soft state commonly seen in black hole candidates, but evolve through two substates. The outburst dataset cannot readily be interpreted by any standard model for SXT outbursts. Many of the characteristics could be interpreted with a model combining X-ray irradiation with the disc instability, but with the added ingredient of a very large disc in this long period system., Comment: 18 pages with 17 postscript figures included, uses mn.sty. During 1996 the soft-X-ray transient and superluminal jet source GRO J1655-40 was observed in outburst with a multiwavelength campaign including HST, RXTE, CGRO and ground based facilities. Here we focus on a key question raised by the observations: where and how does the outburst optical flux originate? Any model must not only fit the optical spectra, but must account for the observation that X-ray fluxes continued to rise slowly while the optical flux declined, contrary to predictions of standard models for the outburst of SXTs and dwarf novae., Comment: 2 pages, LaTeX, including 2 postscript figures. We present results on the X-ray spectra of the radio-loud, high-polarization quasar, PKS 1510-089, based on new data obtained using ASCA, and from archival ROSAT data. The X-ray spectrum obtained by ASCA is unusually hard, with the photon index=1.30+-0.06, while the (non-simultaneous) ROSAT data indicate a steeper spectrum (1.9+-0.3). The X-ray flux at 1 keV is within 10% during both observations. A break in the underlying continuum at about 0.7 keV is suggested. Flat X-ray spectra seem to be the characteristic of high polarization quasars, and their spectra also appear to be harder than that of the other radio-loud but low-polarization quasars. The multiwavelength spectrum of PKS 1510-089 is similar to many other gamma-ray blazars, suggesting the emission is dominated by that from a relativistic jet. We have collected the available data from the literature and from public data archives covering the past two decades for the long-term X-ray and optical light curves of X-ray nova (XN) outbursts, and carry out for the first time a systematic, statistical study of XN light curves which are classified into 5 morphological types. Basic light curve parameters, e.g., the outburst peak flux, amplitude, luminosity, rise and decay timescales, the observed and expected outburst durations, and total energy radiated, are tabulated and discussed. The rise timescales are found to have a flat distribution while the decay timescales have a much narrower and near-Gaussian distribution, centered around 30 days and dominated by the strongest outbursts. The peak luminosity is also distributed like a Gaussian, centered around 0.2 in Eddington units, while the total energy released has a much broader distribution around 10E44 ergs. We identify and discuss additional light curve features, such as precursors, plateaus, and secondary maxima. The plateaus exhibited in the light curves of black hole sources are found to have, on average, longer durations and they are followed by longer decays. The identified secondary maxima seem to occur mostly in black hole systems. For the frequency of outbursts, we find that the average XN outburst rate is about 2.6 per year for events >0.3 Crab, and that the mean recurrence time between outbursts from a single source is 6 years. The spatial and logN-logS distribution of the XN sources, with limited statistics, agrees with a source population in the Galactic disk, as observed from a point at a distance of 8.5 kpc from the Galactic center. Finally, we point out that the observed XN light curve properties can in general be explained by a disk thermal instability model, although some important problems still remain., Comment: 68 pages including 27 Postscript figures and 12 tables. We present the results of our hard X-ray and gamma-ray study of the LMXB Sco X-1 utilizing INTEGRAL data as well as contemporaneous RXTE PCA data. We have investigated the hard X-ray spectral properties of Sco X-1 including the nature of the high-energy, nonthermal component and its possible correlations with the location of the source on the soft X-ray color-color diagram. We find that Sco X-1 follows two distinct spectral tracks when the 20-40 keV count rate is greater than 130 counts/second. One state is a hard state which exhibits a significant high-energy, powerlaw tail to the lower energy thermal spectrum. The other state shows a much less significant high-energy component. We found suggestive evidence for a correlation of these hard and soft high-energy states with the position of Sco X-1 on the low-energy X-ray color-color diagram. We have searched for similar behavior in 2 other Z sources: GX 17+2 and GX 5-1 with negative results.

We present the results of our hard X-ray and gamma-ray study of the LMXB Sco X-1 utilizing INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI and SPI data as well as contemporaneous RXTE PCA data. We have concentrated on investigating the high-energy spectral properties of the Sco X-1 including the nature of the high-energy spectrum and its possible correlations with the location of the source on the color-color diagram. We also present the results of a search for positron-electron annihilation line emission from Sco X-1, as it is the brightest of a bulge X-ray binary population which approximately traces the 511-keV spatial distribution inferred from SPI.

We present the results of a study of the high-energy properties of PSR J1846-0258 using INTEGRAL data PSR J1846-0258 has a period of 325 ms and is embedded within a PWN that is associated with the SNR KES 75. This pulsar is unusual for two reasons. First, like Geminga, no radio pulsations have yet been detected from this pulsar. It has thus far been detected exclusively in the X-ray and gamma-ray bands. Second, it has a large inferred magnetic field, approx. 5 x 10(exp 13) G. The 20-200 keV spectra derived from 2.35 Msec of INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI observations are consistent with an extension of the previous spectral results at energies below 10 keV from Chandra. The possibility of detecting PSR J1846-0258 with GLAST is discussed as well as the implications a GLAST detection would have on pulsar theory, specifically photon splitting In the magnetospheres of high-field pulsars.

We present the results of a hard X-ray study of the Be stars gamma Cassiopeiae and HD 110432 based on observations made with the INTEGRAL observatory. These stars are known to be moderately strong, X-ray sources (L(sub x) approx. equal to = 10(sup 32)-10(sup 33) erg per second). These values are at the extreme high end of the known luminosity distribution for active coronal systems, but several orders of magnitude below typical X-ray binaries. The hard X-ray spectra for these systems are quite similar. They can be well fitted by either optically thin thermal plasma models with kT = 12.5 - 14 keV or a cutoff powerlaw + gaussian line model with photon indices in the 1.3 - 1.5 range and a line energy of 6.7 keV. The 20-50 keV light curves show no evidence for flaring and no significant evidence for periodic variability. It has been proposed that the X-ray emission is due to either accretion onto a white dwarf companion or magnetic activity near the surface of the Be star. We discuss in detail the pros and cons of each scenario towards explaining our spectral and temporal results. Given that both thermal and nonthermal models fit the data equally well, we cannot use the spectra to delineate between these two scenarios. Recent observations indicate that gamma Cas has a approx. 1 solar mass companion in a 203.59 day orbit. This is consistent with the white dwarf - Be star binary model but the lack of periodic modulation of the flux on this timescale calls this conclusion into question. On the other hand the lack of flaring activity may rule against the magnetic activity model. We discuss advances in observations and theory that need to be made to resolve the origin of these systems.

The black-hole X-ray binary transient GRO J1655-40 underwent an outburst beginning in early 2005. We present the results of our multi-wavelength observational campaign to study the early outburst spectral and temporal evolution, which combines data from X-ray (RXTE, INTEGRAL), radio (VLA) and optical (ROTSE, SMARTS) instruments. During the reported period the source left quiescence and went through four major accreting black hole states: low-hard, hard intermediate, soft intermediate and high-soft. We investigated dipping behavior in the RXTE band and compare our results to the 1996-1997 case, when the source was predominantly in the high-soft state, finding significant differences. We consider the evolution of the low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations and find that the frequency strongly correlates with the spectral characteristics, before shutting off prior to the transition to the high-soft state. We model the broad-band high-energy spectrum in the context of empirical models, as well as more physically motivated thermal and bulk-motion Comptonization and Compton reflection models. RXTE and INTEGRAL data together support a statistically significant high energy cut-off in the energy spectrum at approximately equal to 100 - 200 keV during the low-hard state. The RXTE data alone also show it very significantly during the transition, but cannot see one in the high-soft state spectra. We consider radio, optical and X-ray connections in the context of possible synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton origins of X-ray emission in low-hard and intermediate states. In this outburst of GRO J1655-40, the radio flux does not rise strongly with the X-ray flux.

We have obtained Fourier-resolved spectra of the black-hole binary 4U 1543-47 in the canonical states (high/soft, very high, intermediate and low/hard) observed in this source during the decay of an outburst that took place in 2002. Our objective is to investigate the variability of the spectral components generally used to describe the energy spectra of black-hole systems, namely a disk component, a power-law component attributed to Comptonization by a hot corona and the contribution of the iron line due to reprocessing of the high energy (E greater than or approx, equal to 7 keV) radiation. We find that i) the disk component is not variable on time scales shorter than approx. 100 seconds, ii) the reprocessing emission as manifest by the variability of the Fe K(alpha) line responds to the primary radiation variations down to time scales of approx. 70 ms in the high and very-high states, but longer than 2 s in the low state, iii) the low-frequency QPOs are associated with variations of the X-ray power law spectral component and not to the disk component and iv) the spectra corresponding to the highest Fourier frequency are the hardest (show the flatter spectra) at a given spectral state. These results questions the models that explain the observed power spectra as due to modulations of the accretion rate only.

Transient outbursts of black holes and neutron stars in X-ray binaries with low-mass companions start with a flickering hard power-law flux that contains a low frequency quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO). The frequency of the QPO may reflect the outer boundary of the coronal emission and its inward motion toward the compact object. It has also been proposed that the hard flux is related to the base of a radio emitting outflow or compact jet. We had detailed observations of the beginning of the 2005 outburst of GRO J165.5-40 with RXTE, INTEGRAL, the VLA and ROTSE. We use the X-ray, radio, and optical results in the context of these models to address their applicability to the onset of the outburst and to specify the physical parameters. Decline of the radio flux as both the power-law and disk flux increased constrains the amount of synchrotron self-Compton emission. Values are compared to those of other black hole and neutron star transients. We are glad to acknowledge support by a NASA INTEGRAL Guest Observer Grant and by the UTE project, NRAO, and ROTSE.

We have compiled a complete, significance limited extragalactic sample based on approximately 25,000 deg(sup 2) to a limiting flux of 3 x 10(exp -11) ergs per square centimeter per second. (approximately 7,000 deg(sup 2)) to a flux limit of 10(exp -11) ergs per square centimeter per second)) in the 20 - 40 keV band with INTEGRAL. We have constructed a detailed exposure map to compensate for effects of non-uniform exposure. The flux-number relation is best described by a power-law with a slope of alpha = 1.66 plus or minus 0.11. The integration of the cumulative flux per unit area leads to f(sub 20-40 keV) = 2.6 x 10(exp -10) ergs per square centimeter per second per sr(sup -1) which is about 1% of the known 20-40 keV X-ray background. We present the first luminosity function of AGN in the 20-40 keV energy range, based on 68 extragalactic objects detected by the imager IBIS/ISGRI on-board INTEGRAL. The luminosity function shows a smoothly connected two power-law form, with an index of gamma (sub 1) = 0.9 below, and gamma (sub 2) = 2.2 above the turn-over luminosity of L(sub *), = 4.6 x 10(sup 43) ergs per second. The emissivity of all INTEGRAL AGNs per unit volume is W(sub 20-40keV)(greater than 10(sup 41) ergs per second) = 2.8 x 10(sup 38) ergs per second h(sup 3)(sub 70) Mpc(sup -3). These results are consistent with those derived in the 2-20keV energy band and do not show a significant contribution by Compton-thick objects. Because the sample used in this study is truly local (z(raised bar) = 0.022)), only limited conclusions can be drawn for the evolution of AGNs in this energy band. But the objects explaining the peak in the cosmic X-ray background are likely to be either low luminosity AGN (L(sub x) less than 10(sup 41) ergs per second) or of other type, such as intermediate mass black holes, clusters, and star forming regions.

The well known black-hole X-ray binary transient XTE J1550-564 underwent an outburst during the spring of 2003 which was substantially underluminous in comparison to previous periods of peak activity in that source. In addition, our analysis shows that it apparently remained in the hard spectral state over the duration of that outburst. This is again in sharp contrast to major out-bursts of that source in 1998/1999 during which it exhibited an irregular light curve, multiple state changes and collimated outflows. This leads us to classify it as a failed outburst. We present the results of our study of the spring 2003 event including light curves based on observations from both INTEGRAL and RXTE. In addition, we studied the evolution of the high-energy 3-300 keV continuum spectrum using data obtained with three main instruments on INTEGRAL. These spectra are consistent with typical low-hard-state thermal Comptonization emission. We also consider the 2003 event in the context of a multi-source, multi-event period-peak luminosity diagram in which it is a clear outlyer. We then consider the possibility that the 2003 event was due to a discrete accretion event rather than a limit-cycle instability. In that context, apply model fitting to derive the timescale for viscous propagation in the disk, and infer some physical characteristics.

In this paper we discuss the methods developed for the production of the INTEGRAL/SPI instrument response. The response files were produced using a suite of Monte Carlo simulation software developed at NASA/GSFC based on the GEANT-3 package available from CERN. The production of the INTEGRAL/SPI instrument response also required the development of a detailed computer mass model for SPI. We discuss ow extensive investigations into methods to reduce both the computation time and storage requirements for the SPI response. We also discuss corrections to the simulated response based on our comparison of ground and infiight Calibration data with MGEANT simulations.

The theoretical predictions of the converging inflow, or Bulk-Motion Comptonization model are discussed and some predictions are compared to X- and gamma-ray observations of the high-soft state of Galactic black hole candidate XTE J1550+564. The approx. 10(exp 2)-Hz QPO phenomenon tends to be detected in the high-state at times when the bolometric luminosity surges and the hard-powerlaw spectral component is dominant. Furthermore, the power in these features increases with energy. We offer interpretation of this phenomenon, as oscillations of the innermost part of the accretion disk, which in turn supplies the seed photons for the converging inflow where the hard power-law is formed through Bulk Motion Comptonization (BMC). We further argue that the noted lack of coherence between intensity variations of the high-soft-state low and high energy bands is a natural consequence of our model, and that a natural explanation for the observed hard and soft lag phenomenon is offered. In addition, we address some criticisms of the BMC model supporting our claims with observational results.

The hard X-ray transient, GRO J1008-57, was discovered during a bright outburst in 1993 July by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) instrument on board the Compton Gamme-Ray Observatory (CGRO). There are no published reports of previous emission from this 93.6 sec X-ray pulsar. Recent optical results have suggested a Be star as the companion. A search of the EXOSAT archives shows that an ME observation centered on the star HD 88661 includes GRO J1008-57 within the field of view. The characteristics of the medium-energy detection including a hard spectrum and pulsed emission at 91.36 sec (with chance probability of 3 x 10(exp -4)) indicates that EXOSAT detected GRO J1008-57 rather than the field star. The estimated flux is 2.4 x 10(exp -11) ergs/cm sq/sec for a luminosity of 1.1 x 10(exp 34) (D/2 kpc)(exp 2) ergs/sec. The X-ray spectrum is hard (photon index approximately equals 1.2) and highly absorbed (N(sub H) approximately equals 0.7 x 10(exp 22)). The detection of this transient suggests that there is a pulse shape dependence on luminosity, a spectral shape independent of luminosity, a large period derivative of P-dot/P = 2.3 x 10(exp -3)/yr, and a dynamic range of at least 100 in L(sub chi). We discuss GRO J1008-57 data in the context of wind-accretion models for this new member of the Be class of X-ray binaries.

We have monitored the evolution of the transient X-ray source GRO J0422+32 from approximately 2 weeks postdiscovery into its early decline phase at ultraviolet, optical, and radio wavelengths. Optical and ultraviolet spectra exhibit numerous, but relatively weak, high-excitation emission lines such as those arising from He II, N III, N V, and C IV superposed on an intrinsically blue continuum. High-resolution optical spectroscopy reveals line profiles which are double peaked, and in the case of the higher order Balmer lines, superposed on a broad absorption profile. The early outburst optical-ultraviolet continuum energy distribution is well represented by a two power-law fit with a break at approximately equal 4000 A. Radio observations with the Very Large Array (VLA) reveal a flat-spectrum source, slowly increasing in intensity at the earliest epochs observed, followed by an approximate power-law decay light curve with an index of -1. Light curves for each wavelength domain are presented and discussed. Notable are the multiple secondary outbursts seen in the optical more than 1 year postdiscovery, and spectral changes associated with secondary rises seen in the radio and UV. We find that the ultraviolet and optical characteristics of GRO J0422+32 as well as its radio evolution, are similar to other recent well-observed soft X-ray transients (also called X-ray novae) such as Cen X-4, A0620-00 (V616 Mon), and Nova Muscae 1991 (GS 1124-683), suggesting that GRO J0422+32 is also a member of that subclass of low-mass X-ray binaries. We present definitive astrometric determination of the source position, and place an upper limit of R approximately equals 20 from our analysis of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS). Additionally, we derive distinct values for color excess from analysis of the optical (E(B-V) = 0.23) and ultraviolet (E(B-V) = 0.4) data, suggesting an intrinsic magnitude of 19-19.5 for the progenitor if it is mid-K dwarf. This leads to a likely range of 2.4-3.0 kpc for the source distance, which is consistent with our separate estimate of 2.4 +/- 0.4 kpc based on measurement of the NaD interstellar line profile. Adopting 2.4 kpc and E(B-V) = 0.23, the outburst absolute magnitude was M approximately equals 0.0, which is a typical value for this class of objects.

An ongoing program of photometric monitoring of selected active galactic nuclei has revealed a significant outburst in the optically violently variable (OVV) quasi-steller object (QSO) 3C 279. The event occurred during May and June of 1992, and was characterized by a peak amplitude of 2.3 mag in the R band. We obtained nearly simultaneous optical and ultraviolet spectroscopy from 1150 to 8600 A of the source at the approximate midpoint of the outburst. The outburst spectrum is well represented by a power law with index alpha = -1.77 (where F(sub nu) varies as nu (exp alpha) which is relatively flat in comparison with typical quiescent spectra for this source. No emission features are discernable in our data, nor is there any significant Lyman-edge absorption. The observations and data analysis procedures are described, and the resulting photometric light curves and spectra are presented. We also present a long baseline photometric light curve for context. Comparisons with previously published optical-UV outburst and quiescent spectra are made, and luminosity-dependent spectral variations are discussed.

We report on a series of ultraviolet spectroscopic observations made with the IUE satellite, which sampled critical outburst stages of the soft X-ray transient Nova Muscae 1991. Continuum light curves, and a multi-epoch line analysis are presented. In addition, a single epoch optical-UV spectra obtained with the HST/FOS is discussed. The optical-UV continuum fits approximately the 'canonical' fv varies as V exp 1/3 power low expected for thermal emission from steady state accretion disk. The emission line spectrum contains prominent high ionization lines of C IV and N V. Weaker lines are seen at intermittent epochs, including some of lower ionization. The derivation of galactic reddening which has significant implications for distance estimates is discussed. Comparisons with previous SXT sources are considered.

Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) Faint Object Camera (FOC) and observations of Nova Muscae 1991 obtained on May 14-15, 1991 are presented and discussed. A nearly featureless continuum with broad 2200 A absorption feature and no Balmer jump is found. The FOS spectrum is modeled, including previous multiepoch IUE, optical, and X-ray data using a simple blackbody accretion disk model. It is found that the mass transfer rate decays exponentially with a characteristic time of about 43 days. The cooling front predicted by the disk instability model should have been observable, but was not seen.
