2. Radicalizing Democratic Education: Unity and Dissent in Wartime.

- Abstract
This paper explores the normative role of civic education in responding to war, and in preparing society for the possibility of peace. The paper describes changes in the conceptualization of citizenship in times of conflict. It notes that during wartime, democratic societies tend to transform their notion of citizenship to a militaristic one that is termed here belligerent citizenship. the paper examines the role of public education in response to these social challenges. It makes the case for an educational response to belligerent democracy from various perspectives, situated within the contemporary theoretical discussion of patriotic education. Based on Amy Gutmann's democratic education theory, the paper maintains that the foremost role of public education is to foster basic democratic principles, such as equal opportunity and liberty. It points out that in wartime, the education system has to fulfill this role through opposing the mainstream conception of citizenship, employing radical, critical ways of interpreting and realizing these aims. 3. Autonomy and Vulnerability: On Just Relations between Adults and Children.

- Abstract
Legal and political theorists strive at expanding the scope of children's rights to cover further areas of their lives and choices. This paper suggests that this effort is misguided, and that the protection of children requires instituting adults' obligations, rather than broadening children's rights. Contrary to the common theoretical and societal tendency to focus on just and efficient ways of turning children into specific types of adults (most commonly citizens), the paper defends a view of children and childhood as deserving equal respect to adults based on regarding childhood not as an impediment, but rather as the first of many steps that make up human life. It presents the argument for just relations between the two social groups, adults and children relying on philosophical, psychological, and educational theories. The paper shows the contextuality of the conception of childhood and describes some of the basic elements of the contemporary Western conception of childhood. It defends the view of human life as a continuum in which all periods should receive equal respect against the prevalent view that regards adulthood as the standard according to which other phases of human life are weighed. It elaborates on the standardized view of society and compares children to women and foreigners to elaborate on the claim that groups outside the social norm are regularly misconceptualized and rendered insecure. The paper suggests that regarding childhood as an equal part of human life, and acknowledging its vulnerability, should lead to instituting adults' obligations to protect children as a basic component of just relations between adults and children. The conclusion indicates the advantages of preserving a variety of perspectives within society by respecting differences among its members. Contains 58 references. (BT)

4. From Belligerence to Peace: The Role of Civic Education.

- Abstract
When a security threat and sense of instability befell the United States after the events of September 11, 2001, the familiar order of political priorities was upset. In a matter of days the American public discourse organized itself around the same principles that have guided the state of Israel for many years: security IN, education OUT. Education is the political mechanism by which the state and the society shape their future character. Decision making about the structure of the education system, the material that will be taught in it and, ultimately, the vision that this system will promote, requires thought about how people want the future society to look. This paper examines how civic education can help shape a society that desires peace and is ready for it, and how education of this kind can prepare Israeli society for the morning after of peace. To clarify what areas in the education system need to be changed and adapted to the peace era, the paper considers how the Israeli education system deals at present with Israeli society's expectation that it produce beneficent and committed citizens and soldiers. It also looks at possible ways of dealing with the new expectations likely to arise after peace comes. The paper focuses mainly on changes in the concept of citizenship in passing from a situation of conflict to an era of peace (or at least one in which the existential threat diminishes), and the implications of these changes for the main dimensions of education. Abstract Differential diagnosis is a crucial aspect of medical practice, as it guides clinicians to accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans. Traditional resources, such as medical books and services like UpToDate, are constrained by manual curation, potentially missing out on novel or less common findings. This paper introduces and analyzes two novel methods to mine etiologies from scientific literature. The first method employs a traditional Natural Language Processing (NLP) approach based on syntactic patterns. By using a novel application of human-guided pattern bootstrapping patterns are derived quickly, and symptom etiologies are extracted with significant coverage. The second method utilizes generative models, specifically GPT-4, coupled with a fact verification pipeline, marking a pioneering application of generative techniques in etiology extraction. Analyzing this second method shows that while it is highly precise, it offers lesser coverage compared to the syntactic approach. Importantly, combining both methodologies yields synergistic outcomes, enhancing the depth and reliability of etiology mining.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Higher serum urate levels are associated with an increased risk of diabetic kidney disease. Lowering of the serum urate level with allopurinol may slow the decrease in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in persons with type 1 diabetes and early-to-moderate diabetic kidney disease. METHODS: In a double-blind trial, we randomly assigned participants with type 1 diabetes, a serum urate level of at least 4.5 mg per deciliter, an estimated GFR of 40.0 to 99.9 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 of body-surface area, and evidence of diabetic kidney disease to receive allopurinol or placebo. The primary outcome was the baseline-adjusted GFR, as measured with iohexol, after 3 years plus a 2-month washout period. Secondary outcomes included the decrease in the iohexol-based GFR per year and the urinary albumin excretion rate after washout. Safety was also assessed. RESULTS: A total of 267 patients were assigned to receive allopurinol and 263 to receive placebo. The mean age was 51.1 years, the mean duration of diabetes 34.6 years, and the mean glycated hemoglobin level 8.2%. The mean baseline iohexol-based GFR was 68.7 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 in the allopurinol group and 67.3 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 in the placebo group. During the intervention period, the mean serum urate level decreased from 6.1 to 3.9 mg per deciliter with allopurinol and remained at 6.1 mg per deciliter with placebo. After washout, the between-group difference in the mean iohexol-based GFR was 0.001 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 (95% confidence interval [CI], -1.9 to 1.9; P = 0.99). The mean decrease in the iohexol-based GFR was -3.0 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 per year with allopurinol and -2.5 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 per year with placebo (between-group difference, -0.6 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 per year; 95% CI, -1.5 to 0.4). BACKGROUND: Data are lacking on the long-term effect on cardiovascular events of adding sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor, to usual care in patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind study, we assigned 14,671 patients to add either sitagliptin or placebo to their existing therapy. Open-label use of antihyperglycemic therapy was encouraged as required, aimed at reaching individually appropriate glycemic targets in all patients. To determine whether sitagliptin was noninferior to placebo, we used a relative risk of 1.3 as the marginal upper boundary. The primary cardiovascular outcome was a composite of cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or hospitalization for unstable angina. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 3.0 years, there was a small difference in glycated hemoglobin levels (least-squares mean difference for sitagliptin vs. placebo, -0.29 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.32 to-0.27). Overall, the primary outcome occurred in 839 patients in the sitagliptin group (11.4%; 4.06 per 100 person-years) and 851 patients in the placebo group (11.6%; 4.17 per 100 person-years). BACKGROUND: The cardiovascular effects of adding once-weekly treatment with exenatide to usual care in patients with type 2 diabetes are unknown. METHODS: We randomly assigned patients with type 2 diabetes, with or without previous cardiovascular disease, to receive subcutaneous injections of extended-release exenatide at a dose of 2 mg or matching placebo once weekly. The primary composite outcome was the first occurrence of death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke. The coprimary hypotheses were that exenatide, administered once weekly, would be noninferior to placebo with respect to safety and superior to placebo with respect to efficacy. RESULTS: In all, 14,752 patients (of whom 10,782 [73.1%] had previous cardiovascular disease) were followed for a median of 3.2 years (interquartile range, 2.2 to 4.4). A primary composite outcome event occurred in 839 of 7356 patients (11.4%; 3.7 events per 100 person-years) in the exenatide group and in 905 of 7396 patients (12.2%; 4.0 events per 100 person-years) in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 0.91; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.83 to 1.00), with the intention-to-treat analysis indicating that exenatide, administered once weekly, was noninferior to placebo with respect to safety (P

The debate over the accommodation of culture in liberal democracies tends to emphasize exit rights. Autonomy is typically taken as a pre-condition for exit, and public schools are often charged with promoting or facilitating it. I argue that diversity liberals have a more justifiable view than that of autonomy liberals on cultural accommodation, but diversity liberalism too should reframe its view of exit rights. Narrow exit rights that protect basic human rights should be maintained and augmented with entrance paths into general society. I further suggest that for exit rights along with entrance paths to provide the morally required conditions for accommodating culture while respecting freedom, policies in this realm should be designed to address adults rather than children. I consider the effect of this dual change of perspective on the accommodation of culture in democratic institutions, including schools.

Hydrogen bonds are non-covalent interactions and essential for assembling supermolecules into ordered structures in biological systems, endowing crystals with fascinating physical properties, and inspiring the construction of eco-friendly electromechanical devices. However, the interplay between hydrogen bonding and the physical properties is not fully understood at the molecular level. Herein, we demonstrate that the physical property of biological crystals with double-layer structures could be enhanced by rationally controlling hydrogen bonding interactions between amino and carboxyl groups. Different hydrogen bonding interactions result in various thermal, mechanical, electronic, and piezoelectric properties. In particular, the weak interaction between O and H atoms contributes to low mechanical strength that permits important ion displacement under stress, giving rise to a strong piezoelectric response. This study not only reveals the correlation between the hydrogen bonding and physical properties in double-layer structures of biological crystals but also demonstrates the potential of these crystals as functional biomaterials for high-performance energy-harvesting devices. Theoretical calculations and experimental verifications in this work provide new insights into the rational design of biomaterials with desirable physical properties for bioelectrical devices by modulating intermolecular interactions.

Tissue engineering (TE) is a rapidly expanding field aimed at restoring or replacing damaged tissues. In spite of significant advancements, the implementation of TE technologies requires the development of novel, highly biocompatible three-dimensional tissue structures. In this regard, the use of peptide self-assembly is an effective method for developing various tissue structures and surface functionalities. Specifically, the arginine–glycine–aspartic acid (RGD) family of peptides is known to be the most prominent ligand for extracellular integrin receptors. Due to their specific expression patterns in various human tissues and their tight association with various pathophysiological conditions, RGD peptides are suitable targets for tissue regeneration and treatment as well as organ replacement. Therefore, RGD-based ligands have been widely used in biomedical research. This review article summarizes the progress made in the application of RGD for tissue and organ development. Furthermore, we examine the effect of RGD peptide structure and sequence on the efficacy of TE in clinical and preclinical studies. Additionally, we outline the recent advancement in the use of RGD functionalized biomaterials for the regeneration of various tissues, including corneal repair, artificial neovascularization, and bone TE.

Estimation of reservoir parameters has always been a challenge for shale gas reservoirs. This study has concentrated on neural network technique and multiple regression analysis to predict reservoir properties including porosity, permeability, fluid saturation and total organic carbon content from conventional wireline log data for a large North American shale gas reservoir. More than 262 core analysis data from 3 wells were used as "target" and "response" for neural network and multiple regression analysis. Common log data available in three wells including GR, SP, RHOB, NPHI, DT and deep resistivity were used as "input" and "predictor".This study shows that reservoir parameters could be better estimated using the neural network technique than through multiple regression. The neural network method had a correlation coefficient greater than 80% for most of the parameters. Although providing a set of algorithms, multiple regression analysis was less successful for predicting reservoir parameters.

PURPOSE: To develop a method for direct measurement, using anatomic specimens, of the precision of MR-guided stereotaxic location and to describe its application to a 1.5-T MR unit with a Leksell stereotaxic frame. METHODS: Small pieces of gelfoam (1 X 1 X 1 mm), soaked in gadopentetate dimeglumine, were stereotaxically introduced into formalin-fixed human heads using a Leksell D (three experiments) or G (nine experiments) stereotaxic frame. The head and the frame were then introduced into a 1.5-T MR unit. The target coordinates (as set on the stereotaxic frame by one investigator) were then compared with the MR-determined stereotaxic coordinates (calculated independently by another investigator). The imprecisions Ex, Ey, and Ez in each direction were defined as the differences between the calculated and the chosen coordinates. RESULTS: Regarding the three targets studied with the D frame, mean imprecision Ex was 1.08 +/- 0.50 mm (mean +/- SEM), Ey 0.83 +/- 0.58 mm, and Ez 0.75 +/- 0.25 mm. For the nine targets studied with the G frame, Ex was 0.48 +/- 0.17 mm, Ey 0.69 +/- 0.14 mm, and Ez 0.82 +/- 0.13 mm. Statistical analysis of the results showed no significant difference between Ex or Ey and half the size of a pixel, indicating that, in the axial plane, stereotaxic MR precision is limited only by pixel size. A statistically significant difference was observed in the coronal plane between Ez and half the size of a pixel, but it must be stressed that Ez remained smaller than 1 mm. CONCLUSION: MR-guided stereotaxic location can be used with confidence for most diagnostic, functional, and therapeutic procedures.
