3. Dipole-dipole Interactions Through a Lens

Abstract

We study the fluctuation-mediated interactions between two atoms in the presence of an aplanatic lens, demonstrating an enhancement in their resonant dipole-dipole interaction. We derive the field propagation of the linear optical system in terms of the electromagnetic Green's tensor for an aplanatic lens. The collective internal atomic dynamics is analyzed via a Lindblad master equation, which allows one to characterize the dispersive and dissipative interactions between atoms. We thus demonstrate that the resonant dipole-dipole coupling between the atoms can be enhanced in the focal plane of the lens, and the lens-modified energy exchange between the atoms can create a mutual trapping potential. Our work opens new avenues for expanding dipole-dipole interactions to macroscopic scales and the experimental platforms to study them.

Abstract

Axions are well-motivated dark matter candidates with simple cosmological production mechanisms. They were originally introduced to solve the strong CP problem, but also arise in a wide range of extensions to the Standard Model. This Snowmass white paper summarizes axion phenomenology and outlines next-generation laboratory experiments proposed to detect axion dark matter. There are vibrant synergies with astrophysical searches and advances in instrumentation including quantum-enabled readout, high-Q resonators and cavities and large high-field magnets. This white paper outlines a clear roadmap to discovery, and shows that the US is well-positioned to be at the forefront of the search for axion dark matter in the coming decade., Comment: restore and expand author list

5. Dissimilar collective decay and directional emission from two quantum emitters

Abstract

We study a system of two distant quantum emitters coupled via a one-dimensional waveguide where the electromagnetic field has a direction-dependent velocity. As a consequence, the onset of collective emission is non-simultaneous and, for appropriate parameters, while one of the emitters exhibits superradiance the other can be subradiant. Interference effects enable the system to radiate in a preferential direction depending on the atomic state and the field propagation phases. We characterize such directional emission as a function of various parameters, delineating the conditions for optimal directionality.

Abstract

Many people consider news articles to be a reliable source of information on current events. However, due to the range of factors influencing news agencies, such coverage may not always be impartial. Media bias, or slanted news coverage, can have a substantial impact on public perception of events, and, accordingly, can potentially alter the beliefs and views of the public. The main data gap in current research on media bias detection is a robust, representative, and diverse dataset containing annotations of biased words and sentences. In particular, existing datasets do not control for the individual background of annotators, which may affect their assessment and, thus, represents critical information for contextualizing their annotations. In this poster, we present a matrix-based methodology to crowdsource such data using a self-developed annotation platform. We also present MBIC (Media Bias Including Characteristics) - the first sample of 1,700 statements representing various media bias instances. The statements were reviewed by ten annotators each and contain labels for media bias identification both on the word and sentence level. MBIC is the first available dataset about media bias reporting detailed information on annotator characteristics and their individual background. The current dataset already significantly extends existing data in this domain providing unique and more reliable insights into the perception of bias. In future, we will further extend it both with respect to the number of articles and annotators per article.

Abstract

We investigate simplified models involving an inert scalar triplet and vector-like leptons that can account for the muon $g-2$ anomaly. These simplified scenarios are embedded in a model that features W' and Z' bosons, which are subject to stringent collider bounds. The constraints coming from the muon $g-2$ anomaly are put into perspective with collider bounds, as well as bounds coming from lepton flavor violation searches. The region of parameter space that explains the $g-2$ anomaly is shown to be within reach of lepton flavor violation probes and future colliders such as HL-LHC and HE-LHC., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

This document summarises the current theoretical and experimental status of the di-Higgs boson production searches, and of the direct and indirect constraints on the Higgs boson self-coupling, with the wish to serve as a useful guide for the next years. The document discusses the theoretical status, including state-of-the-art predictions for di-Higgs cross sections, developments on the effective field theory approach, and studies on specific new physics scenarios that can show up in the di-Higgs final state. The status of di-Higgs searches and the direct and indirect constraints on the Higgs self-coupling at the LHC are presented, with an overview of the relevant experimental techniques, and covering all the variety of relevant signatures. Finally, the capabilities of future colliders in determining the Higgs self-coupling are addressed, comparing the projected precision that can be obtained in such facilities. The work has started as the proceedings of the Di-Higgs workshop at Colliders, held at Fermilab from the 4th to the 9th of September 2018, but it went beyond the topics discussed at that workshop and included further developments., Comment: 279 pages, 136 figures, document produced partially as outcome of the conference Double Higgs Production at Colliders - Fermilab - Chicago (US) 4 - 9 September 2018. Abstract

The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, was a success achieved with only a percent of the entire dataset foreseen for the LHC. It opened a landscape of possibilities in the study of Higgs boson properties, Electroweak Symmetry breaking and the Standard Model in general, as well as new avenues in probing new physics beyond the Standard Model. Six years after the discovery, with a conspicuously larger dataset collected during LHC Run 2 at a 13 TeV centre-of-mass energy, the theory and experimental particle physics communities have started a meticulous exploration of the potential for precision measurements of its properties. This includes studies of Higgs boson production and decays processes, the search for rare decays and production modes, high energy observables, and searches for an extended electroweak symmetry breaking sector. This report summarises the potential reach and opportunities in Higgs physics during the High Luminosity phase of the LHC, with an expected dataset of pp collisions at 14 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 ab$^{-1}$. These studies are performed in light of the most recent analyses from LHC collaborations and the latest theoretical developments. 12. On-chip quantum interference of a superconducting microsphere

Abstract

We propose and analyze an all-magnetic scheme to perform a Young's double slit experiment with a micron-sized superconducting sphere of mass $\gtrsim {10}^{13}$ amu. We show that its center of mass could be prepared in a spatial quantum superposition state with an extent of the order of half a micrometer. The scheme is based on magnetically levitating the sphere above a superconducting chip and letting it skate through a static magnetic potential landscape where it interacts for short intervals with quantum circuits. In this way, a protocol for fast quantum interferometry using quantum magnetomechanics is passively implemented. Such a table-top earth-based quantum experiment would operate in a parameter regime where gravitational energy scales become relevant. In particular, we show that the faint parameter-free gravitationally-induced decoherence collapse model, proposed by Di\'osi and Penrose, could be unambiguously falsified., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures. 13. Electronic structure and direct observation of ferrimagnetism in multiferroic hexagonal YbFeO3

Abstract

The magnetic interactions between rare-earth and Fe ions in hexagonal rare-earth ferrites (h-RFeO3), may amplify the weak ferromagnetic moment on Fe, making these materials more appealing as multiferroics. To elucidate the interaction strength between the rare-earth and Fe ions as well as the magnetic moment of the rare-earth ions, element-specific magnetic characterization is needed. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we have studied the ferrimagnetism in h-YbFeO3 by measuring the magnetization of Fe and Yb separately. The results directly show antialignment of magnetization of Yb and Fe ions in h-YbFeO3 at low temperature, with an exchange field on Yb of about 17 kOe. The magnetic moment of Yb is about 1.6μB at low temperature, significantly reduced compared with the 4.5μB moment of a free Yb3+. In addition, the saturation magnetization of Fe in h-YbFeO3 has a sizable enhancement compared with that in h-LuFeO3. These findings directly demonstrate that ferrimagnetic order exists in h-YbFeO3; they also account for the enhancement of magnetization and the reduction of coercivity in h-YbFeO3 compared with those in h-LuFeO3 at low temperature, suggesting an important role for the rare-earth ions in tuning the multiferroic properties of h-RFeO3.

14. Margination regimes and drainage transition in confined multicomponent suspensions

Abstract

A mechanistic theory is developed to describe segregation in confined multicomponent suspensions such as blood. It incorporates the two key phenomena arising in these systems at low Reynolds number: hydrodynamic pair collisions and wall-induced migration. In simple shear flow, several regimes of segregation arise, depending on the value of a "margination parameter" M. Most importantly, there is a critical value of M below which a sharp "drainage transition" occurs: one component is completely depleted from the bulk flow to the vicinity of the walls. 15. On SH Molecules in Umbral Spectra

Abstract

Following our predictions on detectability, very weak lines of the SH molecules have been reported as identified in the photospheric spectrum of the Sun. This could be the first detection of a mercapto radical in the solar spectrum, thus placing confidence in the solar abundance of Sulfur. The observations additionally tested the utilized theoretical band oscillator strength. Sunspots being cooler than the photosphere are the hosts to a large number of molecular species. However, owing to photospheric radiation scattered into the observed umbra, the discoverers could not detect the lines of SH in the sunspot spectrum where they are expected to show larger than the photospheric equivalent widths (EWs in short). Detection of weak lines in photospheric spectrum coupled with a no-detection of the relatively strong same lines in the sunspot spectrum might cause doubts on the detection itself. The above problem is investigated here in detail with a choice on photospheric and sunspot models and micro-turbulence values. The new results indicate that the predicted sunspot lines are about half intense than reported before and the lines remain of detectable strengths. Abstract

Quantum vacuum forces dictate the interaction between individual atoms and dielectric surfaces at nanoscale distances. For example, their large strengths typically overwhelm externally applied forces, which makes it challenging to controllably interface cold atoms with nearby nanophotonic systems. Here, we show that it is possible to tailor the vacuum forces themselves to provide strong trapping potentials. The trapping scheme takes advantage of the attractive ground state potential and adiabatic dressing with an excited state whose potential is engineered to be resonantly enhanced and repulsive. This procedure yields a strong metastable trap, with the fraction of excited state population scaling inversely with the quality factor of the resonance of the dielectric structure. We analyze realistic limitations to the trap lifetime and discuss possible applications that might emerge from the large trap depths and nanoscale confinement., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We analyze the time evolution of quantum entanglement in a model consisting of two two-level atoms interacting with a two-mode electromagnetic field for a variety of initial states and interatomic separations. We study two specific atomic separations which give rise to symmetric atom-field couplings. For general atomic distances we consider a subset of initial states analytically, and then treat the more general situation numerically. We examine a variety of qualitative features such as entanglement sudden death, dynamical generation, protection, and transfer between subsystems. Our analysis shows a stark contrast in features of entanglement between the two special coupling schemes often considered; further, these features are uncharacteristic of those arising for general distances, due to the high degree of symmetry present in the special cases. Abstract

Near-field energy coupling between two surfaces may arise from frustrated total-internal-reflectance and from atomic dipole-dipole interaction. Such an exchange of energy, if at resonance, greatly enhances the radiation transfer between an emitter and a photovoltaic converter. Computational modeling of selected, but realizable, emitter and detector structures and materials shows the benefits of both near-field and resonance coupling (e.g., with ~ 100nm gaps). In one sense, this is almost an engineering paper. A strong computational model (based on physically-proven concepts and incorporating known and predicted high-temperature properties of acceptable emitter materials) is used to demonstrate the potential of materials (properly-selected to overcome natural limitations) and of structures (carefully crafted to push the limits of present technology) for breaking barriers of thermal conversion at lower-emitter temperatures (< 1000C)., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy

Abstract

In this paper, we address the issue of the generation of non-degenerate cross-polarization-entangled photon pairs using type-II periodically poled lithium niobate. We show that, by an appropriate engineering of the quasi-phase-matching grating, it is possible to simultaneously satisfy the conditions for two spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes, namely ordinary pump photon down-conversion to either extraordinary signal and ordinary idler paired photons, or to ordinary signal and extraordinary idler paired photons. In contrast to single type-II phase-matching, these two processes, when enabled together, can lead to the direct production of cross-polarization-entangled state for non degenerate signal and idler wavelengths. Such a scheme should be of great interest in applications requiring polarization-entangled non degenerate paired photons with, for instance, one of the entangled photons at an appropriate wavelength being used for local operation or for quantum storage in an atomic ensemble, and the other one at the typical wavelength of 1550 nm for propagation through an optical fiber., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

22. On the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in the iron based pnictides

Abstract

The recent discovery of superconductivity at moderately high temperature (26 K to 55 K) in doped iron-based pnictides (LnO_{1-x}F_xFeAs, where Ln = La, Ce, Sm, Pr, Nd, etc.), having layered-structure-like cuprates, has triggered renewed challenge towards understanding the pairing mechanism. After reviewing the current findings on these systems, a theoretical model of a combined mechanism is suggested in which the phonon-mediated and distortion-field-mediated pairing processes give the right order of superconducting critical temperature T_c. The distortion-field modes arise from Jahn-Teller or pseudo Jahn-Teller effects due to degenerate or near-degenerate iron 3d_{xz} and 3d_{yz} orbitals., Comment: 4 pages

23. Radiative-field quantum-coupling between closely-spaced surfaces

Abstract

A quantum-mechanical formulation of energy transfer between closely-spaced surfaces is given. Coupling between the two surfaces arises from the atomic dipole-dipole interaction involving transverse-photon exchange. The exchange of photons at resonance greatly enhances the radiation transfer. The spacing (distance) dependence is derived for the quantum well - quantum well situation. The interaction between two planar quantum wells, separated by a gap is found to be proportional to the 4th power of the wavelength-to-gapwidth ratio and to the radiation tunneling factor for the evanescent waves. Expressions for the net power transfer, in the near-field regime, from hot to cold surface for this case is given and evaluated for representative materials. 24. A model for enhanced fusion reaction in a solid matrix of metal deuterides

Abstract

Our study shows that the cross-section for fusion improves considerably if d-d pairs are located in linear (one-dimensional) chainlets or line defects. Such non-equilibrium defects can exist only in a solid matrix. Further, solids harbor lattice vibrational modes (quanta, phonons) whose longitudinal-optical modes interact strongly with electrons and ions. One such interaction, resulting in potential inversion, causes localization of electron pairs on deuterons. Thus, we have attraction of D+ D- pairs and strong screening of the nuclear repulsion due to these local electron pairs (local charged bosons: acronym, lochons). This attraction and strong coupling permits low-energy deuterons to approach close enough to alter the standard equations used to define nuclear-interaction cross-sections. These altered equations not only predict that low-energy-nuclear reactions (LENR) of D+ D- (and H+ H-) pairs are possible, they predict that they are probable., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

25. Lochon Catalyzed D-D Fusion in Deuterated Palladium in the Solid State

Abstract

Lochons (local charged bosons or local electron pairs) can form on D+ to give D- (bosonic ions) in Palladium Deuteride in the solid state. Such entities will occur at special sites or in linear channel owing to strong electron-phonon interaction or due to potential inversion on metallic electrodes. These lochons can catalyze D- - D+ fusion as a consequence of internal conversion leading to the formation of He-4 plus production of energy (Q=23.8 MeV) which is carried by the alpha particle and the ejected electron-pair. Models to account for the observed experimental results for low-energy nuclear reactions in palladium-deuteride systems are presented along with calculated results. The crucial idea is a mechanism of improved probability for the needed penetration of the Coulomb barrier for a D-D reaction. This facilitation occurs, in general, with the formation of D^- ions at special frequency modes (e.g. via phonons) and, specifically for the laser-stimulated case, with utilization of enhanced optical potential at a selected interface. Abstract

A theoretical model involving phonon and lochon (local charged boson) mediated pairing of electrons in Pd(H/D)x is suggested to explain the possible observation of superconductivity in the range 51K < Tc < 295K (when x exceeds unity). In the combined mechanism the lochons have transient existence on (H+/D+) resulting in (H-/D-) species. The coupling parameter lambda_1 for lochon induced processes depend linearly on x. The model explains the observation of the enhancement of Tc for x varying from 0.6 to 1.6. In this paper we consider some Anderson type models, with decaying randomness and the free parts having long range tails. The randomness may decay at different rates in different directions, though in majority of directions we require some sort of short range decay. We show that there is pure a.c. spectrum and some pure point spectrum in such models.

Abstract

In this article the notion of two quadripartitioned single valued weighted dombi prioritized operators, namely, quadripartitioned single valued weighted dombi prioritized average (QSVNWDPA) operator and quadripartitioned single valued weighted dombi prioritized geometric ( QSVNWDPG) operator have been developed which are based on quadripartitioned single valued neutrosophic (QSVN) sets. Further some important properties of these two operators are studied. Finally a multi-attribute decision making (MADM) problem has been solved using QSVNWDPA operator and QSVNWDPG operator.

48. A Study Of Sporadic Adult Onset Degenerative Cerebellar Ataxias

Abstract

Twenty-four cases of sporadic olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy (OPCA) of adult onset were studied over a period of two years. Results suggest that this disorder has its usual onset in the 5th and 6th decade of life with a male: female ratio of 2:1. It manifests clinically with gait ataxia in all, dysarthria, other cerebellar signs and autonomic involvement in vast majority. There were features of basal ganglia involvement in some. No known identifiable environmental cause was found and genetically they are quite distinct from the known autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias though sporadic occurrence in recessive inheritance or a de novo mutation could not be ruled out completely, but it is unlikely.

Abstract

There are no current descriptions of general anaesthesia characteristics for obstetric surgery, despite recent changes to patient baseline characteristics and airway management guidelines. This analysis of data from the direct reporting of awareness in maternity patients' (DREAMY) study of accidental awareness during obstetric anaesthesia aimed to describe practice for obstetric general anaesthesia in England and compare with earlier surveys and best-practice recommendations. Consenting patients who received general anaesthesia for obstetric surgery in 72 hospitals from May 2017 to August 2018 were included. Baseline characteristics, airway management, anaesthetic techniques and major complications were collected. Descriptive analysis, binary logistic regression modelling and comparisons with earlier data were conducted. Data were collected from 3117 procedures, including 2554 (81.9%) caesarean deliveries. Thiopental was the induction drug in 1649 (52.9%) patients, compared with propofol in 1419 (45.5%). Suxamethonium was the neuromuscular blocking drug for tracheal intubation in 2631 (86.1%), compared with rocuronium in 367 (11.8%). Difficult tracheal intubation was reported in 1 in 19 (95%CI 1 in 16-22) and failed intubation in 1 in 312 (95%CI 1 in 169-667). Obese patients were over-represented compared with national baselines and associated with difficult, but not failed intubation. There was more evidence of change in practice for induction drugs (increased use of propofol) than neuromuscular blocking drugs (suxamethonium remains the most popular). There was evidence of improvement in practice, with increased monitoring and reversal of neuromuscular blockade (although this remains suboptimal). Despite a high risk of difficult intubation in this population, videolaryngoscopy was rarely used (1.9%).
