35. The forgotten half: Men's influence over cookstove adoption decisions in Northern Kenya

Abstract

Current research on cleaner cookstoves (CCS) is focused primarily on women, thus removing men from the cookstove adoption equation despite their decision making role in households. Very little is understood about what would motivate men to purchase CCS, and whether such motivations are key factors that influence a household’s decision to acquire CCS. There is a paucity of comparative analyses of men and women perspectives on this topic. This study adopted a qualitative approach to gain a first-hand perspective of men on this issue, and to compare findings with that of women in order to identify any similarities and gaps that could shape the eventual outcome of acquisition of a CCS. Contrary to published literature of women’s perception of men as being naïve to the challenges associated with traditional cookstoves, we find men in our study to be highly aware of such challenges, having experienced them as child-cooks while growing up. However, this awareness does not translate into an interest in purchasing CCS. While women expressed a strong desire for CCS, men who wield power over decisions to acquire CCS viewed them as status symbols, unnecessary and unattainable. This gender imbalance in motivation and power forecloses opportunities for household adoption of CCS. We recommend that programs should equally target men with CCS messaging, bundle cookstoves with other products that men value, and take advantage of women’s groups as a source of collective bargaining power for women in the acquisition of CCS.

38. Household perspectives on cookstove and fuel stacking: A qualitative study in urban and rural Kenya

Abstract

Stove and fuel stacking is becoming accepted as part of the clean cooking transition process, even though it attenuates positive health and climate benefits that can be realized by cookstove interventions. This study analyses the underlying drivers of stove and fuel stacking from the household perspectives, and its implications for improving impact of clean cooking programs. The study draws on a case study of two communities in Western and Northern Kenya: rural households predominantly using biomass fuels and urban households predominantly using liquefied petroleum gas for cooking. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, and was analysed using the systematic procedures of grounded theory. Stove and fuel stacking is found to be a pervasive practice, necessitated by the inability of any single cooking device to fulfill all stove applications and needs in the household. Time-costs and practical limitations associated with the primary stove, such as inability to accommodate large pot sizes were identified as the major reasons for stacking. These reasons were much more dominant than cultural attachment to traditional stoves and associated food tastes. Stacking had some highly regarded positive benefits, such as providing a fallback stove when the primary one could not meet key functionalities; and saving time by allowing for multiple dishes to be prepared simultaneously. Our findings support other studies that have shown stacking to be a common practice, and highlights the implications of this practice for strategies aimed at scaling-out clean cookstoves.

Plant Direct published by American Society of Plant Biologists and the Society for Experimental Biology and John Wiley & Sons Ltd The multinational Arabidopsis research community is highly collaborative and over the past thirty years these activities have been documented by the Multinational Arabidopsis Steering Committee (MASC). Here, we (a) highlight recent research advances made with the reference plant Arabidopsis thaliana; (b) provide summaries from recent reports submitted by MASC subcommittees, projects and resources associated with MASC and from MASC country representatives; and (c) initiate a call for ideas and foci for the “fourth decadal roadmap,” which will advise and coordinate the global activities of the Arabidopsis research community.

Abstract

The genome of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia encodes a cell-cell signaling system that is highly related to the diffusible signal factor (DSF)-dependent system of the phytopathogen Xanthomonas campestris. Here we show that in S. maltophilia, DSF signaling controls factors contributing to the virulence and antibiotic resistance of this important nosocomial pathogen.

44. Iron, zinc and phytic acid retention of biofortified, low phytic acid, and conventional bean varieties when preparing common household recipes

Abstract

Biofortification is an effective method to improve the nutritional content of crops and nutritional intake. Breeding for higher micronutrient mineral content in beans is correlated with an increase in phytic acid, a main inhibitor of mineral absorption in humans. Low phytic acid (lpa) beans have a 90% lower phytic acid content compared to conventional beans. This is the first study to investigate mineral and total phytic acid retention after preparing common household recipes from conventional, biofortified and lpa beans. Mineral retention was determined for two conventional, three biofortified and two lpa bean genotypes. Treatments included soaking, boiling (boiled beans) and refrying (bean paste). The average true retention of iron after boiling was 77.2– 91.3%; for zinc 41.2–84.0%; and for phytic acid 49.9–85.9%. Soaking led to a significant decrease in zinc and total phytic acid after boiling and refrying, whereas for iron no significant differences were found. lpa beans did not exhibit a consistent pattern of difference in iron and phytic acid retention compared to the other groups of beans. However, lpa beans had a significantly lower retention of zinc compared to conventional and biofortified varieties (p < 0.05). More research is needed to understand the underlying factors responsible for the differences in retention between the groups of beans, especially the low retention of zinc. Combining the lpa and biofortification traits could further improve the nutritional benefits of biofortified beans, by decreasing the phytic acid:iron and zinc ratio in beans.

Abstract

Maintenance of genomic imprinting at the Arabidopsis medea locus has been shown to require zygotic DDM1 activity, but DDM1 is not needed for establishment of the imprint at the mea locus. Transcription of the mea locus is regulated by genomic imprinting. A modifier gene needed to maintain the imprint in seed development was identified.
