1. Spin-parity assignments and extension of the 02+ band in 158Er

Abstract

Low and medium spin collective structures in 158Er have been studied using the 150Sm(12C,4nγγ) fusion-evaporation reaction at a beam energy of Elab = 65 MeV. A band built on the 02+ excitation has been established and extended to Jπ = 18+ from the analysis of γ-γ coincidence relationships, intensity arguments and DCO ratios. The 02+ band in 158Er presents a similar trend to the 02+ bands in the lighter N = 90 isotones but lies about 125 keV higher. This systematic trend supports a similar configuration for the 02+ bands in the N = 90 isotones.

Abstract

An initial series of experiments utilising the (3He,n) reactions have been carried out at iThemba LABS. These are complimentary to transfer reactions such as (t,p) stripping or (p,t) pick-up reactions measurements using magnetic spectrometers. However, in the past, (3He,n) measurements have suffered from ambiguities due to the low energy resolution inbuilt into the time-of-flight techniques used. By combining neutron detection techniques with the AFRODITE γ-ray array, it has been shown that very good energy resolutions can be achieved. This enables the relative strengths of two proton stripping to excited states, separated by only a few keV, to be accurately measured. This technique has been applied to first excited 02+ states and, in particular to those uniquely seen in double β-decay.

Abstract

Spectator fragments resulting from relativistic heavy ion collisions, consisting of single protons and neutrons along with groups of stable nuclear fragments up to Nitrogen (Z=7), are measured in PHOBOS. These fragments are observed in Au+Au (sqrt(sNN)=19.6 GeV) and Cu+Cu (22.4 GeV) collisions at high pseudorapidity ($\eta$). The dominant multiply-charged fragment is the tightly bound Helium ($\alpha$), with Lithium, Beryllium, and Boron all clearly seen as a function of collision centrality and pseudorapidity. We observe that in Cu+Cu collisions, it becomes much more favorable for the $\alpha$ fragments to be released than Lithium. The yields of fragments approximately scale with the number of spectator nucleons, independent of the colliding ion. The shapes of the pseudorapidity distributions of fragments indicate that the average deflection of the fragments away from the beam direction increases for more central collisions. A detailed comparison of the shapes for $\alpha$ and Lithium fragments indicates that the centrality dependence of the deflections favors a scaling with the number of participants in the collision., Comment: To be submitted to PRC 17 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

The centrality dependence of the midrapidity charged-particle multiplicity density ($|\eta|$$<$1) is presented for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at RHIC over a broad range of collision energies. The multiplicity measured in the Cu+Cu system is found to be similar to that measured in the Au+Au system, for an equivalent N$_{\rm part}$, with the observed factorization in energy and centrality still persistent in the smaller Cu+Cu system. The extent of the similarities observed for bulk particle production is tested by a comparative analysis of the inclusive transverse momentum distributions for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions near midrapidity. It is found that, within the uncertainties of the data, the ratio of yields between the various energies for both Au+Au and Cu+Cu systems are similar and constant with centrality, both in the bulk yields as well as a function of p$_{\rm T}$, up to at least 4 GeV/$c$. The effects of multiple nucleon collisions that strongly increase with centrality and energy appear to only play a minor role in bulk and intermediate transverse momentum particle production., Comment: Submitted for publication in Phys. Abstract

Charged particle pseudorapidity distributions are presented from the PHOBOS experiment at RHIC, measured in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=19.6, 22.4, 62.4, 130 and 200 GeV, as a function of collision centrality. The presentation includes the recently analyzed Cu+Cu data at 22.4 GeV. The measurements were made by the same detector setup over a broad range in pseudorapidity, |eta|<5.4, allowing for a reliable systematic study of particle production as a function of energy, centrality and system size. Comparing Cu+Cu and Au+Au results, we find that the total number of produced charged particles and the overall shape (height and width) of the pseudorapidity distributions are determined by the number of nucleon participants, N_part. Detailed comparisons reveal that the matching of the shape of the Cu+Cu and Au+Au pseudorapidity distributions over the full range of eta is better for the same N_part/2A value than for the same N_part value, where A denotes the mass number. In other words, it is the geometry of the nuclear overlap zone, rather than just the number of nucleon participants that drives the detailed shape of the pseudorapidity distribution and its centrality dependence., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

We present first results on event-by-event elliptic flow fluctuations in nucleus-nucleus collisions corrected for effects of non-flow correlations where the magnitude of non-flow correlations has been independently measured in data. Over the measured range in centrality, we see large relative fluctuations of 25-50%. Abstract

We present the first measurements of the pseudorapidity distribution of primary charged particles in Cu+Cu collisions as a function of collision centrality and energy, \sqrtsnn = 22.4, 62.4 and 200 GeV, over a wide range of pseudorapidity, using the PHOBOS detector. Making a global comparison of Cu+Cu and Au+Au results, we find that the total number of produced charged particles and the rough shape (height and width) of the pseudorapidity distributions are determined by the number of nucleon participants. More detailed studies reveal that a more precise matching of the shape of the Cu+Cu and Au+Au pseudorapidity distributions over the full range of pseudorapidity occurs for the same Npart/2A value rather than the same Npart value. In other words, it is the collision geometry rather than just the number of nucleon participants that drives the detailed shape of the pseudorapidity distribution and its centrality dependence at RHIC energies., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract

Transverse momentum spectra of pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons from Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_(NN)) = 62.4 GeV have been measured by the PHOBOS experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The identification of particles relies on three different methods: low momentum particles stopping in the first detector layers; the specific energy loss (dE/dx) in the silicon Spectrometer, and Time-of-Flight measurement. These methods cover the transverse momentum ranges 0.03-0.2, 0.2-1.0 and 0.5-3.0 GeV/c, respectively. Baryons are found to have substantially harder transverse momentum spectra than mesons. The pT region in which the proton to pion ratio reaches unity in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_(NN)) = 62.4 GeV fits into a smooth trend as a function of collision energy. At low transverse momenta, the spectra exhibit a significant deviation from transverse mass scaling, and when the observed particle yields at very low pT are compared to extrapolations from higher pT, no significant excess is found. By comparing our results to Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_(NN)) = 200 GeV, we conclude that the net proton yield at midrapidity is proportional to the number of participant nucleons in the collision., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. Abstract

Multiplicities in e+e- annihilation and relativistic heavy ion collisions show remarkable similarities at high energies. A thermal-statistical model is proposed to explain the differences which occur mainly at low beam energies. Two different calculations are performed, one using an approximate thermodynamic relationship, the other using a full thermal model code. Abstract

Chemical production has continued to in-crease and change since 2003. The potential geographic impact of the chemical industry continued to change from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, where almost 70 per cent of the industry is expected to operate by 2030, while new products are continually being devel-oped, thus adding to the mixture of chemicals to which biota in the ocean is being exposed.Different lists of hazardous substances have been identified by international organizations, although there is still no agreed single global list of substances that are of concern. The present chapter contains an assessment of the changes since the first Assessment in wa-ter and airborne inputs to the marine environ-ment from land (including groundwater), ships and offshore installations. In addition, the information in the present chapter builds upon the assessment of the list of hazardous sub-stances used in the first Assessment, namely, POPs, metals, hydrocarbons and radioactive substances. It includes new information on rare earth elements, PPCPs and airborne in-puts of nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides that were not included in the first Assessment.

Abstract

In the collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy ions the energy of the nuclei is released in a small volume leading to the creation of a hot and dense nuclear matter. The study of the particles produced from it gives the information on the conditions in the early stage of the collision and the evolution of the system. The PHOBOS experiment provides unique data on the particle production in the almost full phase space and down to very small transverse momenta. This overview shortly presents the most important features of the nucleus-nucleus collisions observed by the PHOBOS experiment, but concentrates on the most recent studies. The extensive analyses of charged particles production are based on the multiplicity measurements in a very wide pseudorapidity range and reveal strong short and long range correlations. The correlations with a high p T trigger particle extends at least 4 units in pseudorapidity, while two-particle correlations suggest production of particles in large and wide clusters. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence.

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the feasibility of recruitment, retention, intervention delivery and outcome measurement in a nutritional intervention to promote pressure ulcer healing in an acute setting. Method: Some 50 tertiary hospital patients with stage II or greater pressure ulcer were randomised to receive either individualised nutritional care by a dietitian, including prescription of wound healing supplements; or standard nutritional care. Relevant nutritional and pressure ulcer (PU) parameters were collected at day 5, 10, 15, 22 and then weekly or until discharge. Results: The median length of hospital stay was 14 days (1-70) with 29 patients discharged by day 15. There were 24 patients discharged before their PU fully healed. Per cent change in valid PU area and score measures from baseline to day 15 were chosen for outcome data analysis to account for varying initial size and severity of the wound and length of stay. There was a larger percentage reduction in PU measures in the intervention group, but this was not statistically significant. Little difference was found in nutritional intake between the control and intervention groups indicating a requirement to focus on effective delivery of the intervention in future studies. Future studies in the acute setting need to account for length of stay and ideally follow patients until full healing. Conclusion: Results indicate a positive association with nutrition intervention and PU healing and that a rigorously designed and adequately powered study is feasible. Abstract

A comprehensive systematic study is made for the collective β and γ bands in even-even isotopes with neutron numbers N=88 to 92 and proton numbers Z=62(Sm) to 70 (Yb). Data, including excitation energies, B(E0) and B(E2) values, and branching ratios from previously published experiments are collated with new data presented for the first time in this study. The experimental data are compared to calculations using a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) based on the covariant density functional theory (CDFT). A realistic potential in the quadrupole shape parameters V(β,γ) is determined from potential energy surfaces (PES) calculated using the CDFT. The parameters of the 5DCH are fixed and contained within the CDFT. Overall, a satisfactory agreement is found between the data and the calculations. In line with the energy staggering S(I) of the levels in the 2γ+ bands, the potential energy surfaces of the CDFT calculations indicate γ-soft shapes in the N=88 nuclides, which become γ rigid for N=90 and N=92. The nature of the 02+ bands changes with atomic number. In the isotopes of Sm to Dy, they can be understood as β vibrations, but in the Er and Yb isotopes the 02+ bands have wave functions with large components in a triaxial superdeformed minimum. In the vicinity of 152Sm, the present calculations predict a soft potential in the β direction but do not find two coexisting minima. This is reminiscent of 152Sm exhibiting an X(5) behavior. The model also predicts that the 03+ bands are of two-phonon nature, having an energy twice that of the 02+ band. This is in contradiction with the data and implies that other excitation modes must be invoked to explain their origin. peerReviewed

25. How well do final year undergraduate medical students master practical clinical skills?

Abstract

Introduction: The clinical examination and other practical clinical skills are fundamental to guide diagnosis and therapy. The teaching of such practical skills has gained significance through legislative changes and adjustments of the curricula of medical schools in Germany. We sought to find out how well final year undergraduate medical students master practical clinical skills.Methods: We conducted a formative 4-station objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) focused on practical clinical skills during the final year of undergraduate medical education. Participation was voluntary. Besides the examination of heart, lungs, abdomen, vascular system, lymphatic system as well as the neurological, endocrinological or orthopaedic examination we assessed other basic clinical skills (e.g. interpretation of an ECG, reading a chest X-ray). Participants filled-out a questionnaire prior to the exam, inter alia to give an estimate of their performance.Results: 214 final year students participated in our study and achieved a mean score of 72.8% of the total score obtainable. 9.3% of participants (n=20) scored insufficiently (<60%). We found no influence of sex, prior training in healthcare or place of study on performance. Only one third of the students correctly estimated their performance (35.3%), whereas 30.0% and 18.8% over-estimated their performance by 10% and 20% respectively.Discussion: Final year undergraduate medical students demonstrate considerable deficits performing practical clinical skills in the context of a formative assessment. Half of the students over-estimate their own performance. We recommend an institutionalised and frequent assessment of practical clinical skills during undergraduate medical education, especially in the final year., Einleitung: Die körperliche Untersuchung und klinisch-praktische Fertigkeiten sind wesentliche ärztliche Fähigkeiten, mit deren Hilfe die Diagnostik und Therapie von Krankheiten gesteuert werden. Durch curriculare Veränderungen wird der praktischen Ausbildung ein hoher Stellenwert eingeräumt. Wie gut beherrschen also Studierende im Praktischen Jahr (PJ) klinisch-praktische Fertigkeiten?Methoden: Wir führten eine freiwillige mündlich-praktische Prüfung mittels OSCE bei Studierenden im PJ durch. Inhalte der Prüfung waren u.a. die körperliche Untersuchung (Herz, Lunge, Abdomens, Gefäßsystem, Lymphsystem; neurologische, endokrinologische bzw. orthopädische Untersuchung) sowie elementare praktische Fertigkeiten (etwa EKG-Interpretation, Basis-Befundung Röntgen-Thorax). Die Teilnehmer füllten zudem vor Beginn der Prüfung einen Fragebogen aus, u.a. zur Einschätzung der eigenen Leistung.Ergebnisse: Insgesamt 214 PJ-Studierende nahmen teil und erreichten 72,8% der erreichbaren Punktzahl. Eine nicht ausreichende Leistung (<60%) zeigten 9,3% der Teilnehmer (n=20). Geschlecht, vorangegangene Ausbildung in einem Gesundheitsberuf sowie Studienort hatten keinen Einfluss auf die Leistung. Im Mittel schätzten sich die Studierenden 0,5 Notenstufen besser. 35,3% der Teilnehmer vermochten ihre Leistung richtig einzuschätzen. 30,0% überschätzten ihr Ergebnis um eine Notenstufe, 18,8% um zwei oder mehr Notenstufen. Diskussion: Studierende im Praktischen Jahr zeigen deutliche Defizite bei der Durchführung klinisch-praktischer Fertigkeiten im Rahmen einer mündlich-praktischen Prüfung. Dabei überschätzt knapp die Hälfte der Studierenden die eigene Leistung. Eine institutionalisierte, regelhafte Prüfung der mündlich-praktischen Fähigkeiten im Praktischen Jahr erscheint daher notwendig.

Abstract

Twenty-two Klebsiella pneumoniae and two K. oxytoca extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing isolates were collected in 1996 from patients in two pediatric wards of the University Hospital in Wrocław, Poland. Molecular typing has revealed that the K. pneumoniae isolates represented four different epidemic strains. Three kinds of enzymes with ESBL activity (pI values of 5.7, 6.0, and 8.2) were identified. The pI 6.0 β-lactamases belonged to the TEM family, and sequencing of the bla TEM genes amplified from representative isolates revealed that these enzymes were TEM-47, previously identified in K. pneumoniae isolates from pediatric hospitals in Łódź and Warsaw. One of the TEM-47-producing strains from Wrocław was very closely related to the isolates from the other cities, and this indicated countrywide spread of the epidemic strain. The pI 5.7 β-lactamase was produced by a single K. pneumoniae isolate for which, apart from oxyimino-β-lactams, the MICs of β-lactam–inhibitor combinations were also remarkably high. Sequencing revealed that this was a novel TEM β-lactamase variant, TEM-68, specified by the following combination of mutations: Gly238Ser, Glu240Lys, Thr265Met, and Arg275Leu. The new enzyme has most probably evolved from TEM-47 by acquiring the single substitution of Arg275, which before was identified only twice in enzymes with inhibitor resistance (IR) activity. TEM-68 was shown to be a novel complex mutant TEM β-lactamase (CMT-2) which combines strong ESBL activity with relatively weak IR activity and, when expressed in K. pneumoniae , is able to confer high-level resistance to a wide variety of β-lactams, including inhibitor combinations. This data confirms the role of the Arg275Leu mutation in determining IR activity and documents the first isolation of K. pneumoniae producing the complex mutant enzyme.

The aim of the presented work was to study the auxetic textiles covered with titanium silicide coating. The research was carried out to develop the material structure, which will be used for protective clothing, e.g. for firemen. The new material should be characterized by increased heat resistance coupled with protection against gas pressure impact caused e.g. by gas installation damage. Abstract

Differential studies of elliptic flow are one of the most powerful tools in studying the initial conditions and dynamical evolution of heavy ion collisions. The comparison of data from Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions taken with the PHOBOS experiment at RHIC provides new information on the interplay between initial geometry and initial particle density in determining the observed final state flow pattern. Studies from PHOBOS point to the importance of fluctuations in the initial state geometry for understanding the Cu+Cu data. We relate the elliptic flow data to the results of our model studies on initial state geometry fluctuations and discuss how we will perform measurements of event-by-event fluctuations in elliptic flow in Au+Au collisions.

Abstract

A γ-spectroscopy study to search for chirality in 193Tl was conducted. Three negative-parity bands with close excitation energies and almost equal B(M1)/B(E2) values were identified. These bands were associated with the same πh9=2 ⊗vi13=2² configuration which is suitable for chiral symmetry. Abstract

Low-energy photoelectron–vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photon coincidences have been measured using synchrotron radiation excitation in the inner-valence region of the nitric oxide molecule. The capabilities of the coincidence set-up were demonstrated by detecting the 2s−1 → 2p−1 radiative transitions in coincidence with the 2s photoelectron emission in Ne. In NO, the observed coincidence events are attributed to dissociative photoionization with excitation, whereby photoelectron emission is followed by fragmentation of excited NO+ ions into O+ + N* or N+ + O* and VUV emission from an excited neutral fragment. The highest coincidence rate occurs with the opening of ionization channels which are due to correlation satellites of the 3σ photoionization. Abstract

The S 2p core excitation spectrum of the SF5CF3 molecule has been measured in the total ion yield mode. It resembles a lot the analogous spectrum of SF6, also recorded in this study, displaying intense transitions to the empty molecular orbitals both below and above the S 2p ionization potential (IP) and weak transitions to the Rydberg orbitals. The S 2p photoabsorption spectra of SF6 and SF5CF3 have been calculated using time-dependent density functional theory, whereby the spin–orbit coupling was included for the transitions below the S 2p IP. The agreement between experiment and theory is good for both molecules, which allows us to assign the main S 2p absorption features in SF5CF3.

Abstract

The present paper describes an experimental apparatus suitable to create and study free clusters by combining laser ablation and synchrotron radiation. First tests on sulfur samples, S, showed the production, through laser ablation, of neutral Sn clusters (n = 1-8). These clusters were ionized using synchrotron radiation at photon energies from 160 eV to 175 eV, across the S 2p core edge. The feasibility of such combined ablation-synchrotron radiation experiments is demonstrated, opening new possibilities on the investigation of free clusters and radicals. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Fluorescence emission at the N 1s edge of the N-2 molecule has been studied with synchrotron radiation excitation. The partial fluorescence yields in the ultraviolet (250-320 nm) and visible (300-650 nm) wavelengths were collected by scanning the photon energy across the core-to-Rydberg excitations and the N 1s ionization potential (IP). When compared to the total ion yield, both fluorescence yields are most enhanced at the excitations to high Rydberg orbitals. A discrete structure appears just below the N 1s IP only in the UV yield and is assigned to core-valence doubly excited states. Dispersed fluorescence spectra in selected wavelength windows were measured at several photon energies in order to find out which fragments are responsible for the enhancement of fluorescence emission just below the N 1s IP. The absorption of soft x-ray radiation induces neutral and ionic core hole states in molecules. Abstract

Low and medium spin collective structures in 158Er have been studied using the 150Sm(12C,4nγγ) fusion-evaporation reaction at a beam energy of Elab = 65 MeV. A band built on the 02+ excitation has been established and extended to Jп = 18+ from the analysis of γ-γ coincidence relationships, intensity arguments and DCO ratios. The 02+ band in 158Er presents a similar trend to the 02+ bands in the lighter N = 90 isotones but lies about 125 keV higher. This systematic trend supports a similar configuration for the 02+ bands in the N = 90 isotones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The mass spectra from the SF6 molecule acquired by energy-resolved electron ion coincidence (EREICO) technique using (1t(1g) + [5t(1u),1t(2u)]), (3e(g) + 1t(2g)), 4t(1u), and 5a(1g) electrons after both valence and S 2p(-1) 6a(1g) core excitation reveal a strong selectivity in the dissociation from these states. From the comparison of the obtained spectra, the influence of the core-excited state in the relaxation pathway of the molecule is studied. The S 2p --> 6a(1g) core excitation does not affect the relaxation dynamics after participator Auger decay to the (1t(1g) + [5t(1u),1t(2u)])(-1) and (4t(1u))(-l) states, but it alters the relaxation dynamics after participator Auger decay to the (3e(g) + 1t(2g))(-1) and (5a(1g))(-1) states with respect to the decay processes after direct excitation of the same orbitals. Abstract

The npsigma(1)Sigma(u)(+) and nppi(1)Pi(u) states in H-2 have been selectively excited using monoenergetic synchrotron light in the range 14.4-15.5 eV and the subsequent emission was observed using a grating spectrometer. In total 22 well separated bands of the npsigma(1)Sigma(u)(divided by) and nppi(1)Pi(u) to E,F (1)Sigma(g)(divided by) systems (n = 3-7) were observed and rotationally analysed. The intensities of the P and R branches relative to the Q branch vary strongly in the nppi to EF bands confirming the existence of predissociations of a large number of nppi(1)Pi(divided by) levels. Energy levels of the E,F (1) Sigma(g)(divided by) state (v(EF) = 0, 1, 3, 6-10) are obtained which confirm earlier determinations from other H-2 experiments., QC 20100525
