Some doctors are becoming increasingly concerned about the readiness with which beta blockers are being prescribed to people suffering from stress or anxiety. Beta blockers, which work by reducing the physical symptoms of an adrenaline rush, are traditionally used to treat high blood pressure or heart problems. However anecdotal evidence suggests that beta blockers are commonly being prescribed to such people as professional musicians and GCSE and A-level students suffering from examination nerves. Beta blockers are much cheaper than the latest generation of anti-depressants.
