The paper presents the 'progressive review' for high pressure preservation/processing (HPP) (cold pasteurization) of foods and the next-generation high-pressure and high temperature (HPHT, HPT) food sterilization technologies. It recalls the basics of HPP and HPT, showing their key features and advantages. It does not repeat detailed results regarding HPP and HPT implementations for specific foods, available in numerous excellent review papers. This report focuses on HPP and HPT-related issues that remain challenging and can hinder further progress. For HPP implementations, the reliable modeling of microorganisms' number decay after different times of high pressure treatment or product storage is essential. This report indicates significant problems with model equations standard nonlinear fitting paradigm and introduces the distortion-sensitive routine enabling the ultimate validation. An innovative concept based on the barocaloric effect is proposed for the new generation of HPT technology. The required high temperature appears only for a strictly defined short time period controlled by the maximal pressure value. Results of the feasibility test using neopentyl glycol as the barocaloric medium are presented. Attention is also paid to feedback interactions between socioeconomic and technological issues in the ongoing Industrial Revolution epoch. It indicates economic constraints for HPP and HPT developments and emerging business possibilities. Online car-hailing is gradually shifting towards a predominant use of electric vehicles, a change that is advantageous for developing a sustainable society. Understanding the patterns of changes in online car-hailing travel can assist transportation authorities in optimizing vehicle dispatching, reducing idle rates, and minimizing resource wastage. The built environment influences the demand for online car-hailing travel. Previous studies have commonly employed the geographically weighted regression (GWR) model and the geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model to examine the relationship between the demand for online car-hailing trips and the built environment. However, these studies have ignored that the impact range of the built environment also varies with time and space. To fully consider the variations in the impact range of the built environment, this study established multi-scale geographically and temporally weighted regression (MGTWR) to examine the spatiotemporal impacts of urban built environments on the demand for online car-hailing travel. An empirical study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the MGTWR model using point of interest (POI) data and online car-hailing order data from Haikou. The evaluation indicators showed that the MGTWR model has higher fitting accuracy than the GTWR model. Moreover, the impact of each type of POI on the demand for online car-hailing travel was analyzed by examining the temporal and spatial distribution of the regression coefficients. Additionally, we observed that transport facility POIs and healthcare service POIs exerted the most pronounced influence on the demand for online car-hailing. Presently data are indispensably important as cities consider data as a commodity which can be traded to earn revenues. In urban environment, data generated from internet of things devices, smart meters, smart sensors, etc. can provide a new source of income for citizens and enterprises who are data owners. These data can be traded as digital assets. To support such trading digital data marketplaces have emerged. Data marketplaces promote a data sharing economy which is crucial for provision of available data useful for cities which aims to develop data driven services. But currently existing data marketplaces are mostly inadequate due to several issues such as security, efficiency, and adherence to privacy regulations. Likewise, there is no consolidated understanding of how to achieve trust and fairness among data owners and data sellers when trading data. Therefore, this study presents the design of an ecosystem which comprises of a distributed ledger technology data marketplace enabled by message queueing telemetry transport (MQTT) to facilitate trust and fairness among data owners and data sellers. The designed ecosystem for data marketplaces is powered by IOTA technology and MQTT broker to support the trading of sdata sources by automating trade agreements, negotiations and payment settlement between data producers/sellers and data consumers/buyers. Overall, findings from this article discuss the issues associated in developing a decentralized data marketplace for smart cities suggesting recommendations to enhance the deployment of decentralized and distributed data marketplaces. This study delves into the complex relationship between ecology, equity, and access, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach to address pressing environmental and societal challenges. Environmental disparities disproportionately affect marginalized communities, shaping their educational access and outcomes. These disparities are exacerbated by factors such as economic status, location, and policy biases, perpetuating a cycle of environmental and socio-economic inequality (Bullard, 1993). To mitigate these issues, various initiatives have been introduced to integrate environmental education into the academic curriculum, emphasizing interdisciplinary research, technology utilization, and community engagement. The National Curriculum Framework in India advocates for the inclusion of environmental concepts across subjects, aligning with global efforts to enhance environmental literacy (UNESCO, 2017). Additionally, community-based programs and advocacy campaigns have emerged to sensitize individuals, particularly the youth, about their role in achieving a sustainable and equitable future. Moving forward, holistic reforms encompassing policy advocacy, inclusive infrastructure development, and community empowerment are imperative to bridge the gap effectively. By fostering a culture of environmental consciousness, equitable resource distribution, and inclusive education, we can envision a society where every individual has equal access to a clean environment and the opportunity to prosper sustainably. Sustainable societies of the future should be designed on the basis of a green public budgeting, as green public 79 spending and investment are the key drivers of sustainable development. Studies on green budgeting have so far tended to focus on green taxes and favourable regulatory regimes for specific sectors, although 14 out of 38 OECD countries have introduced these in some form. Based on secondary research of Slovenian budget documentation for the period from 2018 to 2022, our research findings show that green and sustainable content is weak, both in terms of content and scope. Only 11 out of 24 policies and only 23 out of over 3000 projects have included some ideas of the green and sustainable concept. Due to the evolving methodology and framework of green budgeting, the research challenge could be identified in a repeated and deeper analysis, including the targets and indicators in the coming years.

Societal emergence and sustainability are results of human actions and practices which can either imbalance it with maximum exploitation or retain it through responsible utilization of resources. Based on theories on institutional and resource-based views, the study explores the enablers of green sustainable practices of procurement, logistics, product and process design and regulatory frameworks for low carbon performance.The study employs a Hybrid approach of step-by-step empirical process to examine the impact of sustainable practices on low carbon performance which further affects the sustainable manufacturing and societies. A theoretical model developed based on hypothesis is tested first using modified Dillman's approach. Then it is tested in in the PLS-SEM package using 380 data responses collected from the various manufacturers. Further robustness of proposed model is validated using different ML (machine learning) followed by post hoc analysis using Item Response Theory to validate the scale and efficacy of the measurement model. The study validates the positive relationships of sustainable practices on the low carbon performance which eventually is responsible for sustainable societies. The area of sustainable manufacturing is found relatively lacking and requires further attention of leadership for better societal establishments. The study hopes to further enrich the literature with its unique Hybrid approach of SEM/PLS Machine Learning and IRT which is used to presents carbon performance as a central entity deriving from green practices and driving sustainable manufacturing and societies. Recently, the expansion of energy communities has been aided by the lowering cost of storage technologies and the appearance of mechanisms for exchanging energy that is driven by economics. An amalgamation of different renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, etc., is necessary to offer sustainable energy for smart cities. Furthermore, considering the induction of large-scale electric vehicles connected to the regional micro-grid, and causes of increase in the randomness and uncertainty of the load in a certain area, a solution that meets the community demands for electricity, heating, cooling, and transportation while using renewable energy is needed. This paper aims to define the impact of large-scale electric vehicles on the operation and management of the microgrid using a hybridized algorithm. First, with the use of the natural attributes of electric vehicles such as flexible loads, a large-scale electric vehicle response dispatch model is constructed. Second, three factors of micro-grid operation, management, and environmental pollution control costs with load fluctuation variance are discussed. Third, a hybrid gravitational search algorithm and random forest regression (GSA-RFR) approach is proposed to confirm the method's authenticity and reliability. The constructed large-scale electric vehicle response dispatch model significantly improves the load smoothness of the micro-grid after the large-scale electric vehicles are connected and reduces the impact of the entire grid. The proposed hybridized optimization method was solved within 296.7 s, the time taken for electric vehicle users to charge from and discharge to the regional micro-grid, which improves the economy of the micro-grid, and realizes the effective management of the regional load. The weight coefficients λ1 and λ2 were found at 0.589 and 0.421, respectively. This study provides key findings and suggestions that can be useful to scholars and decisionmakers. To protect the environment and prevent the growth of social and environmental risks, the concept of sustainable development has been shaped. This means meeting the needs of people today without harming the environment or creating other problems in the future. The concept of sustainability is constantly changing, and different people will have different ideas about how best to implement it. In the article, with the help of modern methods of scientific knowledge, an analysis of theoretical approaches to the interpretation of sustainable development is carried out. The relevance of theoretical and methodological studies of the concept of sustainable development as the basis for the development of modern society is substantiated. Based on methodological generalizations, the principles of the concept of sustainable development have been clarified. Based on the basis of the study of the modern understanding of the essence of the concept, the directions for achieving the goals of sustainable development of society are highlighted, and approaches to assessing the sustainable development of socio-economic systems are identified. The article analyzes the dynamics of the world sustainable development index and establishes its growing trend over the past decade and the recession during the global crisis caused by the pandemic. The presented analytical data indicate the intensification of the transition of countries to sustainable development, and this activity is much higher in low-income countries compared to high-income countries. The article substantiates the conclusion about the need to form an appropriate investment potential to ensure the sustainable development of society, which requires a strategic approach that would be based on changing the entire philosophy of thinking and political activity.

With the spread of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) tools and the Internet, Twenty first century technologies have significantly affected human life, and it has been desired to be obtained continuously. It has become challenging to protect information due to the increase in the methods by which malicious people can get information. As a result, it is crucial to determine people's awareness levels by revealing the risks and threats to information security. In this context, a study was conducted to show the awareness levels of teachers who come after the family in raising conscious individuals in society. For this purpose, a quantitative research method was adopted for the problem and sub-problems that form the basis of the research. The survey model, one of the research designs used within the framework of the quantitative research method, was used. Information Security Awareness Scale was applied to 394 teachers, and according to the results obtained, it was determined that the information security awareness level of the teachers was moderate. According to the attacks and threats subdimension, which includes technical issues, it has been determined that the awareness levels of the teachers are at a medium level. The study results show that female teachers' information security awareness levels are lower than male teachers. In comparison, the awareness levels of those who received information security awareness training and information technology teachers are higher. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research aims to analyze the relationship between economic, social and digital performance in cities of different sizes in Brazil. Data provided by the following official agencies: National Treasury Secretariat, National Mayors' Front and Risk Classification Agency were used. Pearson's correlation was used to identify the influence of digital, social, and economic performance variables in cities divided into groups based on the number of inhabitants. There was a strong correlation between Communication and Information Technologies and social and economic aspects. The greater the needs of cities, the more intense is the use of Communication and Information Technologies, reinforcing the establishment of the perspective of smart cities.

This paper studies media's role in contributing towards a sustainable society. The term sustainable development and a sustainable society are well-defined in particular in the context of India's pursuit of Digital India. Despite the Indian Government's future vision for India and the subsequent careful and well-planned policies, an ever growing population will predictably mean an augmented pressure on the society, environment and culture. Therefore, it is argued that if India is serious in following a path of sustainable development, the Indian population needs a behavior change towards sustainable actions. This change in behavior cannot be accomplished by itself but needs conscious efforts on the part of the society and government as a whole. It is recommended that Education for Sustainable Development of all sections of society can contribute to this behavioral change. Bearing in mind that a considerable part of the Indian population is not enrolled in the formal education system, the case is made for an increased role of the media in spreading Education for Sustainable Development. Abstract Background By the year 2025, nearly 3.5 billion people in the world will have no water, including 900,000 from Djibouti. The economic losses caused by the 2000–2012 drought pushed the country to a state of disaster. This has devastated Djibouti’s economy and left millions hungry. This is due to the country’s inability to grow food and dependence on the food imports. The 5 US$ million granted by the WB was not able to reduce the hunger and prevent further increase in poverty and social unrest due to want of food and water. This paper provides a solution to create a self-sustainable society that can live above the current poverty line. Methods The study was carried out based on field investigation and published literature. Desalination cost comparison between fossil fuel-based technology and renewable energy-based technology was carried out based on data from working plants. These data were used to analyse the cost-benefit ratio of fresh water generated from seawater and its use in securing food to the population. Results By developing the geothermal resources, the country can be lifted above the poverty line. What the country needs, to come out of this crisis, is fresh water supply. The country’s geothermal energy resource can generate 900 × 106 kWh of electricity. The electricity required to generate 1000 m3/day (10 × 106 kg/year) of fresh water from the sea is about 11 × 106 MWh. The cost of desalinated water through geothermal energy sources is 1.6 US$/m3 which is far less than the desalinated water generated through any other energy source. Billions of dollars given as aid for poverty alleviation can be utilized to develop geothermal power plants to provide permanent food security to the country. Conclusions The rural population of Djibouti can improve their socio-economic status and secure food security and eradicate hunger through geothermal energy source. Local governments also should play an important role in advising the funding institutions to develop geothermal power projects to support agricultural activity and create employment to the rural population and support a sustainable society.

To convert a society to a sustainable system, attempts are required not only at international and governmental levels, but also at regional levels. It is necessary to challenge multiple issues through cooperation among various actors, such as national governments, local governments, private enterprises and residents. In Japan, one of the initiatives to achieve “the sustainable” at regional level is the “FutureCity” initiative. This is a part of National Strategic Projects in “New Growth Strategy”, which Japanese government introduced in 2010. The purpose of the “Futurecity” initiative is to create the capacity in cities to deal with environmental issues and problems of aging society, as well as establishing sustainable socioeconomic system with environmental aspects, social aspects and economic aspects. Japanese government selected, as the “FutureCity”, the five cities (Yokohama city, Shimokawa town, Kashiwa city, Toyama city and Kitakyusyu city) for making pioneering effort on these challenges, and the six cities that were hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake and great Tsunami in 2011. This “Future city” is expected to provide model solution of human common issues as a forerunner. The object of this research is to define the current situations and problems of the “FutureCity” initiative, through a case study on Yokohama city in Kanagawa prefecture, which is characterized as a big city in Japan. Here, we examined how Yokohama city is tackling the environmental issues and problems of aging society as the “FutureCity” and what problems it has in maintaining their initiative itself as a local government. In addition, we considered how, at international level, Japanese “FutureCity” initiative can contribute to realizing sustainable society

The Global Digital Division remains as a rising focus that has to be brought into the notice of the United Nations UN. It is about the vast disparity in exposure to the existing digital knowledge by ICT information and communication technologies amongst developed and developing nations. The work outlined here seeks to acknowledge the effects and provide feedback of an ethical issue on key areas. The study also provides information about the several concrete solutions to this issue in order to ensure the sustainable development of society. In addition, a Digital Effectiveness Framework has been suggested which consist of five phases namely access, exploration, knowledge acquisition, adoption, and innovation and transformation. The study ends with the molds that leads to address the impact of the Global Digital Divide will continue at national level. National surveillance systems must be set to determine the digital opportunity index DOI for each country and track their role as tech giants in the information and communication technology environment. With the deployment of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the needs of data and information sharing within cities, smart city aims to provide value-added services to improve citizens' quality of life. But, currently city planners/developers are faced with inadequate contextual information on the dimensions of smart city required to achieve a sustainable society. Therefore, in achieving sustainable society, there is need for stakeholders to make strategic decisions on how to implement smart city initiatives. Besides, it is required to specify the smart city dimensions to be adopted in making cities smarter for sustainability attainment. But, only a few methods such as big data, internet of things, cloud computing, etc. have been employed to support smart city attainment. Thus, this study integrates case-based reasoning (CBR) as an artificial intelligence technique to develop a recommender system towards promoting smart city planning. CBR provides suggestions on smart city dimensions to be adopted by city planners/decision-makers in making cities smarter and sustainable. Accordingly, survey data were collected from 115 respondents to evaluate the applicability of the implemented CBR recommender system in relation to how the system provides best practice recommendations and retaining of smart city initiatives. Results from descriptive and exploratory factor analyses suggest that the developed system is applicable in supporting smart city adoption. Besides, findings from this study are expected to provide valuable insights for practitioners to develop more practical strategies and for researchers to better understand smart city dimensions. Abstract: Currently, although the global population has surpassed 7.5 billion and continues to increase in about 80 million each year, attention to demography is almost absent in most of the studies and publications related to the current situation of planetary emergency and the necessary transition to sustainable societies. For this reason, our first aim in this paper has been to discuss if this current lack of attention to demography is justified or not. With this purpose, we begin considering the scientific meaning of Sustainability, in order to overlay distorted and impoverish views of this concept that may hinder our study. Then, we analyse the reasons given by experts for and against the incidence of demographic growth in the current unsustainable situation of planetary emergency. Finally, we present proposals to face the ensemble of interconnected socio-environmental problems (including demographic evolution), to make possible an appropriate transition to sustainable societies.

As multinational corporations (MNCs) aim to become more environmentally sensitive, responsible leaders need to create organizational cultures that facilitate green behaviors among their employees. Successfully encouraging green behaviors can enhance an organization's environmental impact and performance. This exploratory study examines the perceptions, attitudes, and values of managers, employees, and academicians in engaging employees in self-initiated green behaviors. The study uses a qualitative method in which three-day workshops were conducted with 40 mixed participants of focus groups from the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. A major trend adopted by the European Union member countries that are making efforts for sustainable development is the development of organic farming. The article studies the influences generated by the organic farming development in the EU countries, in the period 2006-2014, in terms of sustainable society. The statistical analysis is based on the use of certain variables that have a significant influence on the components of sustainable society. The identification of estimators for panelling data showed the favourable consequences of increasing the organic area for many indicators underpinning the economic, environmental and human wellbeing. The results confirm that the organic farming is a viable alternative to the conventional agriculture for raising the quality of life. The paper essentially quantifies the multiple effects of the organic farming for sustainable development and demonstrates that one of the directions to accelerate the development of the European economy on a sustainable basis is to stimulate the organic farming.

The world is facing a new challenge to overcome the pandemic disease of Coronavirus (COVID-19). An outbreak of COVID-19 to more than 213 countries and territories caused damage to the economy of every country. The proper vaccine to combat this pandemic disease is not invented yet. Due to the lockdown situation, there is a shortage of daily used products globally. To overcome the issue of food shortage and economic survival, the world has to ease the lockdown rules and become operational with the precautionary measures. COVID-19 has a fast transmission rate, therefore, while living with COVID-19, breaking the fast transmission chain of COVID-19 is the only vital solution. Furthermore, there is a dire need to disinfect every individual and his luggage at the entrance of every shopping mall, hospital, public and private institutions, bus stops, metro stations, and railway stations. Hence, the proposed walk-through gate (WTG) with different sensors, i.e., infrared thermal camera, UV disinfectant sensor, disinfectant spraying system, touch-less hand sanitizer, and box having a face mask with a dustbin to discard the previous mask can provide an effective and efficient relief. The world cannot stop working and cannot survive for more than 3–6 months in a lockdown, hence the proposed idea is to install the disinfectant automated spraying WTG with a security walk-through gate at every possible entrance to conform living with the COVID-19 disease such as many other diseases. Breaking the transmission chain is the only solution to win the battle against COVID-19 until an effective vaccine invention.

Japan, which faced with the aggravation of environmental problems during rapid industrialization, is considered nowadays as a leader in the sphere of environmental security provision not only for its own territory, but also for the whole Asia-Pacific region. Therefore the author underlines the main periods of the Japanese environmental security concept development from the beginning of the Meiji era till the end of the 20th century. Special attention is paid to the study of historic backgrounds and basic features of the Japanese environment preservation and pollution control policy. At the same time the author deals with political actions aimed at the fight against environmental challenges. Thus, particular attention is paid to the Japanese government's turn to deliberate, systematic, long term activity on environmental conservation, which includes special legislative acts elaboration, pre- and postwar economic growth policy review. Key aspects of environmental conservation regulation, which take into account Japan's demands in this sphere and at the same time meet expectations of the international community, viewing Japan as a green power, are also discussed in the article. In conclusion the author examines the basic features of Japan's participation in major international conferences on the protection of the ozone layer, on the warming of the atmosphere, on preservation of the global environment, which had a great impact on the Japanese environmental legislation.
