The Second-generation Global Imager (SGLI) onboard the Global Change Observation Mission – Climate (GCOM-C) satellite launched on December 23, 2017, observes various geophysical parameters with the aim of a better understanding of the global climate system. As part of that aim, SGLI has great potential to unravel several uncertainties related to clouds by providing new cloud products along with several other atmospheric products related to cloud climatology, including aerosol products from polarization channels. However, a very little is known about the quality of the SGLI cloud products. This study uses data about clouds and global irradiances observed from the Earth’s surface using a sky radiometer and a pyranometer, respectively, to understand the quality of the two most fundamental cloud properties—cloud optical depth (COD) and cloud-particle effective radius (CER)—of both water and ice clouds. The SGLI-observed COD agrees well with values observed from the surface, although it agrees better for water clouds than for ice clouds, while the SGLI-observed CER exhibits poorer agreement than does the COD, with the SGLI values being generally higher than the sky radiometer values. These comparisons between the SGLI and sky radiometer cloud properties are found to differ for different cloud types of both the water and ice cloud phases and different solar and satellite viewing angles by agreeing better for relatively uniform and flat cloud type and for relatively low solar zenith angle. Analyses of SGLI-observed reflectance functions and values calculated by assuming plane-parallel cloud layers suggest that SGLI-retrieved cloud properties can have biases on the solar and satellite viewing angles, similar to other satellite sensors including the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Furthermore, it is found that the SGLI-observed cloud properties reproduce global irradiances quite satisfactorily for both water and ice clouds by resembling several important features of the COD comparison, such as the better agreement for water clouds than for ice clouds and the tendency to underestimate (resp. overestimate) the COD in SGLI observations for optically thick (resp. thin) clouds.

An optimal estimation algorithm to retrieve the cloud optical depth (COD) and cloud particle effective radius (CER) from spectral zenith radiances observed by narrow field-of-view (FOV) ground-based sky radiometers was developed. To further address the filter degradation problem while analyzing long-term observation data, an on-site calibration procedure is proposed, which has good accuracy compared with the standard calibration transfer method. Observations from the new Japanese geostationary satellite Himawari-8 permit quasi-real-time estimation of global shortwave radiation at an unprecedented temporal resolution. However, accurate comparisons with ground-truthing observations are essential to assess their uncertainty. In this study, we evaluated the Himawari-8 global radiation product AMATERASS using observations recorded at four SKYNET stations in Japan and, for certain analyses, from the surface network of the Japanese Meteorological Agency in 2016. We found that the spatiotemporal variability of the satellite estimates was smaller than that of the ground observations; variability decreased with increases in the time step and spatial domain. Cloud variability was the main source of uncertainty in the satellite radiation estimates, followed by direct effects caused by aerosols and bright albedo. Under all-sky conditions, good agreement was found between satellite and ground-based data, with a mean bias in the range of 20–30 W m−2 (i.e., AMATERASS overestimated ground observations) and a root mean square error (RMSE) of approximately 70–80 W m−2. However, results depended on the time step used in the validation exercise, on the spatial domain, and on the different climatological regions. In particular, the validation performed at 2.5 min showed largest deviations and RMSE values ranging from about 110 W m−2 for the mainland to a maximum of 150 W m−2 in the subtropical region. We also detected a limited overestimation in the number of clear-sky episodes, particularly at the pixel level. Overall, satellite-based estimates were higher under overcast conditions, whereas frequent episodes of cloud-induced enhanced surface radiation (i.e., measured radiation was greater than expected clear-sky radiation) tended to reduce this difference. Finally, the total mean bias was approximately 10–15 W m−2 under clear-sky conditions, mainly because of overall instantaneous direct aerosol forcing efficiency in the range of 120–150 W m−2 per unit of aerosol optical depth (AOD). A seasonal anticorrelation between AOD and global radiation differences was evident at all stations and was also observed within the diurnal cycle.

Field observations to investigate the correlation between New Particle Formation (NPF) and the long-range transport of air pollutants in the East Asia region were carried out on a rural Island of Japan in the East-China Sea (Fukue Island, 32.8°N, 128.7°E) over three periods (February 23 to March 7, 2013; November 7 to 20, 2013; and November 2 to 24, 2014). Frequent NPF events were identified (16 events in 50 days), typically in association with sudden increases in particle number concentrations and the successive growth of particles to mobility diameters of several tens of nanometers. The NPF events were classified into two types (A and B) according to the initially detected particle sizes (onset diameters). Type-A consisted of strong NPF events with onset diameters as small as 5 nm. Type-B consisted of NPF events whose onset (

SKYNET and Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) retrieved aerosol single scattering albedo (SSA) values of four sites, Chiba (Japan), Pune (India), Valencia (Spain), and Seoul (Korea), were compared to understand the factors behind often noted large SSA differences between them. SKYNET and AERONET algorithms are found to produce nearly same SSAs for similarity in input data, suggesting that SSA differences between them are primarily due to quality of input data due to different calibration and/or observation protocols as well as difference in quality assurance criteria. The most plausible reason for high SSAs in SKYNET is found to be underestimated calibration constant for sky radiance (ΔΩ). The disk scan method (scan area: 1° × 1° area of solar disk) of SKYNET is noted to produce stable wavelength-dependent ΔΩ values in comparison to those determined from the integrating sphere used by AERONET to calibrate sky radiance. Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) difference between them can be the next important factor for their SSA difference, if AOTs between them are not consistent. Inconsistent values of surface albedo while analyzing data of SKYNET and AERONET can also bring SSA difference between them, but the effect of surface albedo is secondary. The aerosol nonsphericity effect is found to be less important for SSA difference between these two networks.

The first intensive multicomponent ground-based remote-sensing observations by sky radiometer and multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) were performed simultaneously at the SKYNET Phimai site located in central Thailand (15.18∘ N, 102.56∘ E) from January to April 2016. The period corresponds to the dry season associated with intense biomass burning (BB) activity around the site. The near-surface concentration of formaldehyde (HCHO) retrieved from MAX-DOAS was found to be a useful tracer for absorption aerosols from BB plumes, when BB was the dominant source of HCHO and absorption aerosols over other sources. As the HCHO concentration tripled from 3 to 9 ppbv, the ratio of gaseous glyoxal to HCHO concentrations in daytime decreased from ∼0.04 to ∼0.03, responding presumably to the increased contribution of volatile organic compound emissions from BB. In addition, clear increases in aerosol absorption optical depths (AAODs) retrieved from sky radiometer observations were seen with the HCHO enhancement. At a HCHO of 9 ppbv, AAOD at a wavelength of 340 nm reached as high as ∼0.15±0.03. The wavelength dependence of AAODs at 340–870 nm was quantified by the absorption Ångström exponent (AAE), providing evidence for the presence of brown carbon aerosols at an AAE of 1.5±0.2. Thus, our multicomponent observations around central Thailand are expected to provide unique constraints for understanding physical–chemical–optical properties of BB plumes.

The surface albedo of two large cities in Japan was measured using a pyranometer mounted on a helicopter to avoid the bidirectional reflectance distribution. The daytime albedo was 0.12 in the cities, which was less than that of a nearby forest (0.16). The albedo was dependent on building structure in the cities; the albedo was lower in areas with more buildings, and decreased as the aspect ratio of street canyons increased. There are two reasons for this dependency: the multiple reflection of radiation in the building canopy, as has been shown in many previous studies, and the sparse vegetation in urban areas. These two factors concurrently determine the albedo in a real city, where the vegetation amount decreases as the plan roof ratio increases.

Seasonal characteristics of aerosol optical properties in Sky Radiometer Network (SKYNET) Hefei site are studied using a sky radiometer from March 2007 to May 2013. The aerosol optical depth (AOD), Angstrom exponent (AE), volume size distributions, single-scattering albedo (SSA), refractive index, and asymmetry factor (ASY) of aerosols are simultaneously retrieved using the SKYRAD.pack version 4.2 software. During the study period, the AOD varied seasonally, with the maximum value of 1.02 ± 0.42 at 500 nm occurring in the summer, and the highest AOD (1.13 ± 0.42) occurred in June due to stagnant climate conditions and accumulation of polluted aerosols before the East Asian summer monsoon. The variation in AE showed a different pattern, with the minimum (0.97 ± 0.28) and maximum values (1.30 ± 0.22) occurring during the spring and fall seasons, respectively. The relatively low value of AE in spring is related to the emission of Asian dust events. The aerosol volume size distributions can be expressed by the trimodal patterns for each season, consisting of a fine mode with R 2.5 µm, and a middle mode located between them. The real part of the refractive index increased with wavelength (380–870 nm) while the imaginary part of the refractive index decreased for all seasons except for the summer. The seasonal mean values of SSA were 0.97 ± 0.02 (summer), 0.95 ± 0.03 (spring), 0.93 ± 0.04 (autumn), and 0.91 ± 0.04 (winter) at 380 nm indicating more absorbing aerosol in the autumn and winter months. Furthermore, aerosol properties were greatly modified by condensation growth as evidenced by the positive dependencies of AOD, SSA, and ASY on relative humidity.

We analyzed data observed at Fukue-jima (32.752°N, 128.682°E), the downwind of the East Asian desert and urban areas, during the spring season (March–April) of 2008–2011 aiming to understand the light-absorption capacity of Asian dust aerosols, which is a topic of controversy. We observed the decreasing tendency of single-scattering albedo (SSA) with the decrease of Angstrom exponent and the increase of the ratio of dust aerosol optical thickness to total aerosol optical thickness, suggesting the important role of coarse-mode dust aerosols on observed low SSAs. The observational data further indicated that the low SSAs during strong dust events were less likely due to the effect of only strong light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols, such as black carbon (BC), indicating the association of aerosol size distribution on modulating SSA. Such observational results are justified by numerical calculations showing that aerosol size distribution can be the key factor on modulating SSA even without any change in relative amount of light-absorbing aerosol as well as total aerosol optical thickness. Therefore, the observed low SSAs in the downwind regions during dust events could be partially due to the dominance of coarse-mode aerosols over fine-mode aerosols, which are usual in dust events, along with the effect of mixed light-absorbing aerosols. The study further suggests that such effect of aerosol size distribution on SSA can be one of the important reasons for the low SSAs of dust aerosols in the source region as reported by some studies, if coarse-mode aerosols dominate fine-mode aerosols.

[1] Absorption aerosol optical depth (AAOD) measurements made by sun-sky photometers are currently the only constraint available for estimates of the global radiative forcing of black carbon (BC), but their validation studies are limited. In this paper, we report the first attempt to compare AAODs derived from single-particle soot photometer (SP2) and ground-based sun-sky photometer (sky radiometer, SKYNET) measurements. During the Aerosol Radiative Forcing in East Asia (A-FORCE) experiments, BC size distribution and mixing state vertical profiles were measured using an SP2 on board a research aircraft near the Fukue Observatory (32.8°N, 128.7°E) over the East China Sea in spring 2009 and late winter 2013. The aerosol extinction coefficients (bext) and single scattering albedo (SSA) at 500 nm were calculated based on aerosol size distribution and detailed BC mixing state information. The calculated aerosol optical depth (AOD) agreed well with the sky radiometer measurements (2 ± 6%) when dust loadings were low (lidar-derived nonspherical particle contribution to AOD less than 20%). However, under these low-dust conditions, the AAODs obtained from sky radiometer measurements were only half of the in situ estimates. When dust loadings were high, the sky radiometer measurements showed systematically higher AAODs even when all coarse particles were assumed to be dust for in situ measurements. These results indicate that there are considerable uncertainties in AAOD measurements. Uncertainties in the BC refractive index, optical calculations from in situ data, and sky radiometer retrieval analyses are discussed.

The Semi-Arid Climate and Environment Observatory of Lanzhou University (SACOL) project initiated an intensive field experiment on dust aerosols in Dunhuang from April 1 to June 12, 2012. Using sky radiometer measurements and conducting model simulations, we investigated the dust aerosol characteristics and its short-wave radiative impact on the regional climate. The daily averaged optical features of the aerosols markedly varied throughout the study period. High aerosol loading and predominantly coarse particulates were observed in the spring of 2012 ascribed to the influence of prevalent dust storm. The single scattering albedo at 500 nm (SSA(500)) varied from 0.91 to 0.97 on dusty days and from 0.86 to 0.91 on dust-free days, indicating that the dust aerosols sourced from northwest China were not strongly absorbing. Surface radiation quantities estimated by the radiative transfer model excellently agreed with ground-based and satellite observations, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.990 and mean differences ranging from -3.9 to 17.0 W m(-2). The daily mean aerosol shortwave direct radiative forcing (ARF) values were largely negative at the surface (-79.4 to -3.2 W m(-2)) and moderately positive in the atmosphere (2.2-25.1 W m(-2)), indicating strong cooling at the surface and moderate atmospheric warming. The monthly averaged ARFEs (ARFs per unit aerosol optical depth at 500 nm (AOD(500))) at the surface were (-73.9 +/- 11.6) W m(-2), (-67.4 +/- 8.3) W m(-2), and (-74.4 +/- 5.4) W m(-2) in April, May, and June, respectively (overall average of (-70.8 +/- 7.9) W m(-2)), comparable to previously obtained values in East Asia and India domains. The relations between the diurnal ARFs at the surface and top of the atmosphere (TOA) and the AOD(500) indicate that aerosol composition remained relatively stable at Dunhuang during the spring of 2012. The ARF at the TOA was positive for SSA(500) less than 0.85 or when the imaginary part at 500 nm exceeded 0.015.

Ground-based network of cloud measurements is presently limited and there exists uncertainty in the cloud microphysical parameters derived from ground-based measurements. Bias in the i-skyradiometer derived cloud optical depth (τc) and droplet effective radius (Reff) and the importance of these parameters in the parameterization of clouds in climate models have made us intend to develop a possible method for improving these parameters. A new combination method, which uses zenith sky transmittance and surface radiation measurements, has been proposed in the present study to improve the retrievals. The i-skyradiometer derived parametersτcandReffhave been provided as a first guess to a radiative transfer model (SBDART) and a new retrieval algorithm has been implemented to obtain the best combination ofτcandReffhaving minimum bias (−0.09 and −2.5) between the simulated global and diffuse fluxes at the surface with the collocated surface radiation measurements. The new retrieval method has improvedτcandReffvalues compared to those derived using the transmittance only method and are in good agreement with the MODIS satellite retrievals. The study therefore suggests a possible improvement of the i-skyradiometer derived cloud parameters using observed radiation fluxes and a radiative transfer model.

SKYNET is an international research network of ground-based Prede sky radiometers for the observation and monitoring of aerosol–cloud–radiation interactions in the atmosphere. The algorithm developed by SKYNET is SKYRAD.pack, which can be used to process the measurement data of Prede instruments. In this study, the latest SKYRAD.pack software (Version 5.0) has been used to retrieve the aerosol optical properties measured by a SKYNET Prede sky radiometer over an urban site of Beijing, China. Continuous data have been processed over a two-year period, and inversion products, including aerosol optical depth (AOD), Angstrom exponent (α), volumes of different aerosol particle size distributions, and single-scattering albedos (SSA), have been analyzed.

Time-resolved data for size distribution, number concentration and chemical composition of atmospheric aerosols were taken from March 9 to 16, 2012 during Fukue Site Atmospheric Aerosol Observation Campaign (128.7°E, 32.8°N) organized by ASEPH (Impacts of Aerosols in East Asia on Plants and Human Health) project. A scanning mobility particle sizer was employed to continuously measure the particle size distribution from 14 nm to 670 nm and the total number concentration of particles (>3 nm) was measured by a condensation particle counter. Very large amount of polluted air mass transportation (PM2.5 > 65 μg m−3) was observed on March 11, associated with a sudden increase in particle number concentration having a mobility diameter from 100 to 300 nm. The transported air mass contained anthropogenic pollutants such as sulfate (>20 μg m−3), nitrate (>15 μg m−3) and black carbon (>3 μg m−3). Typical new particle formation and growth events were also observed on March 12–13. The onset of particle formation and nucleation bursts was identified at around noon and it is considered that these were nucleated species near the island area. It was found that some new particle formation events were associated with the long range transportation of polluted air mass from East Asian region.

Potential improvements of aerosols algorithms for future climate-oriented satellites such as the coming Global Change Observation Mission Climate/Second generation Global Imager (GCOM-C/SGLI) are discussed based on a validation study of three years’ (2008–2010) daily aerosols properties, that is, the aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and the Ångström exponent (AE) retrieved from two MODIS algorithms. The ground-truth data used for this validation study are aerosols measurements from 3 SKYNET ground sites. The results obtained show a good agreement between the ground-truth data AOT and that of one of the satellites’ algorithms, then a systematic overestimation (around 0.2) by the other satellites’ algorithm. The examination of the AE shows a clear underestimation (by around 0.2–0.3) by both satellites’ algorithms. The uncertainties explaining these ground-satellites’ algorithms discrepancies are examined: the cloud contamination affects differently the aerosols properties (AOT and AE) of both satellites’ algorithms due to the retrieval scale differences between these algorithms. The deviation of the real part of the refractive index values assumed by the satellites’ algorithms from that of the ground tends to decrease the accuracy of the AOT of both satellites’ algorithms. The asymmetry factor (AF) of the ground tends to increase the AE ground-satellites discrepancies as well.

Global atmospheric heat exchanges are highly dependent on the variation of cloud types and amounts. For a better understanding of these exchanges, an appropriate cloud type classification method is necessary. The present study proposes an alternative approach to the often used cloud optical and thermodynamic properties based classifications. This approach relies on the application of edge detection techniques on cloud top temperature (CTT) derived from global satellite maps. The gradient map obtained through these techniques is then used to distinguish various types of clouds. The edge detection techniques used are based on the idea that a pixel’s neighborhood contains information about its intensity. The variation of this intensity (gradient) offers the possibility to decompose the image into different cloud morphological features. High gradient areas would correspond to cumulus-like clouds, while low gradient areas would be associated with stratus-like clouds. Following the application of these principles, the results of the cloud classification obtained are evaluated against a common cloud classification method based on cloud optical properties’ variations. Relatively good matches between the two approaches are obtained. The best results are observed with high gradient clouds and the worst with low gradient clouds.

This article introduces an international regional experiment, East Asian Regional Experiment 2005 (EAREX 2005), carried out in March-April 2005 in the east Asian region, as one of the first phase regional experiments under the UNEP Atmospheric Brown Cloud (ABC) project, and discusses some outstanding features of aerosol characteristics and its direct radiative forcing in the east Asian region, with some comparison with the results obtained in another ABC early phase regional experiment, ABC Maldives Monsoon Experiment (APMEX) conducted in the south Asian region. Time series of aerosol optical thickness (AOT), single scattering albedo (SSA), aerosol extinction cross section profile and CO concentration shows that air pollutants and mineral dust were transported every 5 to 7 days in the EAREX region to produce SSA values at wavelength of 700 nm from 0.86 to 0.96 and large clear-sky shortwave forcing efficiency at 500 nm from 60 W m-2 to go W m-2, though there are some unexplained inconsistencies depending on the evaluation method. The simulated whole-sky total forcing in the EAREX region is -1 to - 2 W m-2 at TOA and -2 to -10 W m-2 at surface in March 2005 which is smaller in magnitude than in the APMEX region, mainly because of large cloud fraction in this region (0.70 at Gosan versus 0.51 at Hanimadhoo in the ISCCP total cloud fraction). We suggest there may be an underestimation of the forcing due to overestimation of the simulated cloudiness and aerosol scale height. On the other hand, the possible error in the simulated surface albedo may cause an overestimation of the magnitude of the forcing over the land area. We also propose simple formulae for shortwave radiative forcing to understand the role of aerosol parameters and surface condition to determine the aerosol forcing. The spectral direct and diffuse irradiances observed by a radiometer with a horizontal surface detector have been frequently used to study aerosol optical parameters, such as aerosol optical thickness (τaer) and single scattering albedo (ω). Such radiometers more or less lack an ideal cosine response. Generally, either the cosine error of observed diffuse irradiance was corrected by assuming an isotropic distribution of sky radiance or it was neglected in the past studies. This study presents an algorithm to retrieve τaer and ω from direct and diffuse irradiances observed by a radiometer with a nonideal cosine response characteristic by taking into account the cosine errors of observed irradiances in detail. The proposed algorithm considers the anisotropic distribution of sky radiance while correcting the cosine error of observed diffuse irradiance. This algorithm can also be used to calculate the cosine error correction factor of diffuse irradiance. The results show that the aerosol optical parameters and the aerosol direct effect (aerosol radiative forcing and the heating rate) can be heavily affected by the cosine errors of observed direct and diffuse irradiances. The study further shows that assuming the isotropic distribution of sky radiance while correcting the cosine error of observed diffuse irradiance can affect the retrieved ω at small and large solar zenith angles; thus, the estimated aerosol direct effect can be quantitatively affected. Because of the cosine errors, this study found the actual values of diffuse irradiances at different wavelengths were underestimated by around 5%–11%.

The aerosol optical properties and their associated radiative effects are derived from sky-radiometer and surface solar radiation data collected over the Semi-Arid Climate and Environment Observatory of Lanzhou University (SACOL) for the period of March to May (MAM) 2009. The result shows that the seasonal mean aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 500 nm in MAM is 0.40. The single scattering albedo (SSA) at 500 nm in MAM at SACOL fluctuates significantly ranging from 0.82 to 0.98. The averaged value of SSA there for background aerosol is 0.90 in MAM, while it is smaller (0.87) during the dust event outbreak period. The smaller SSA can be interpreted as the result of larger particles during dust events. The averaged asymmetry factor (ASY) at 500 nm during dust event period is 0.73, which is larger than 0.70 of background aerosols. The averaged shortwave radiative effects of the aerosols during dust event period in MAM are 0.68, −70.02 and 70.70 W m−2, respectively, at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), surface and in the atmosphere. The aerosols heat the atmosphere during dust event period by up to about 2 K day−1 (daily averaged), which is 60 % larger than the heating (1.25 K day−1) of background aerosols. The significant heating effect in the atmosphere of the aerosols during dust event is determined by larger AOD and smaller SSA.

Using six-year (2004-2009) SKYNET measurements, MODIS-derived AOTs were validated at five SKYNET sites (Seoul, Chiba, Etchujima, Fukuejima, and Hedomisaki), in addition to climatological analysis of MODIS-derived optical properties over the East Asian domain (20-50 o N, 90-150 o E). In so doing MODIS-SKYNET collocated AOT data were constructed if two measurements are taken within 25 km distance and within 30 minute time difference. From the comparison of two measurements, it is demonstrated that aerosol type insignificantly affects the accuracy of MODIS AOT. It is because the aerosol model combining predefined fine aerosol model and coarse aerosol model is used for the retrieval. However, positive bias between MODIS and SKYNET increases as fraction of the coarse aerosol model increases. In addition, MODIS AOT appears to be overestimated in case of lower aerosol loading while the overestimation tends to decrease with increased aerosol loading. Regression analysis between MODIS AOT and SKYNET AOT for 550 nm band yields 0.86, 0.16, and 0.61 of regression slope, intercept, and coefficient of determination, respectively. Those statistical results may draw a conclusion that MODIS AOTs over East Asia carry a reasonable accuracy compared to ground-based SKYNET measurements.

Simultaneous observations of cumulonimbi using the 95-GHz FM-CW cloud radar, the X-band radar, and photogrammetry were carried out during the summer of 2010 in the Kanto region, Japan. An isolated cumulonimbus developed above the cloud radar site after 16:00 Japan Standard Time (JST) on 24 July 2010. A continuous generation of turrets was observed and a total of four turrets formed. The growth rates of the turrets were quite different. The first radar echo of the X-band radar was detected at 3 km above ground level (AGL), three minutes after turret 1 reached its maximum height. Turret 2, generated above the cloud radar, reached 10 km AGL and had a growth rate of 8 m s-1. The cloud radar detected echoes approximately two minutes after the generation of turret 2. The intermittent echo pattern observed by the cloud radar denotes fine structures in the cumulonimbus.

We have been performing radiative budget measurements at a ground-based observatory located on Fukue Island. In this study, we analyzed the data from instruments installed in the observatory and the data observed by MODIS, the satellite-borne imager, to evaluate cirrus cloud radiative forcing (CRF). The result shows that CRF took a large positive value as 127.98 W m-2 at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) and a small positive value as 13.2 W m-2 at the surface. As a result, it was found that optically very thin cirrus clouds exert a strong warming effect on the Earth's system and a weak warming effect on the Earth's surface when aerosols are not taken into account.

We studied the spectral dependencies of aerosol light-absorption over the East China Sea region using sky radiometer data collected at Cape Hedo (26.87°N, 128.25°E), Okinawa, Japan from 2006 to 2008. Absorption Angstrom Exponent (AAE) was around 1 for most of the observation data, indicating black carbon (BC) as the dominant light-absorbing aerosol. However, high values of AAE were often found in the spring season. Aerosols with such high AAE were characterized by comparatively high optical thickness (τ), low single scattering albedo (ω), and an increase of ω with wavelength (λ). Additionally, dust aerosols were considerably high when such high AAEs were observed. Such high AAEs could not be explained by considering only BC and dust as absorbing aerosols, but could be well explained by including the role of brown carbon aerosols. This finding highlights a complex scenario of light-absorbing aerosols in the spring season in this region, and suggests the necessity of considering the role of such brown carbon aerosols on a light-absorption phenomenon for adequately understanding aerosol climatology. The study also discussed that AAE of dust aerosol should be used with care with the known size distribution and spectral values of the imaginary refractive index.

Aerosol optical parameters obtained from sky radiometer instrument are important not only for studying aerosol effects on climate change, but also for validating several results obtained from satellite retrievals and numerical simulations. However, the greatest challenge is to separate cloud-affected and cloud free data from data measured by sky radiometer. In this study, we present an algorithm to separate such cloud-affected and cloud free data. The proposed algorithm is comprehensively tested with observational data. The algorithm consists of three tests: (i) test with global irradiance data, (ii) spectral variability test, and (iii) statistical analyses test. Though the test with the global irradiance data is the most powerful test, our study shows that it has some limitations, which can sometimes cause some clear sky data to be detected as cloud-affected data. In order to cope with this problem, a modified version of spectral variability algorithm is proposed. As the second test, the modified spectral variability algorithm is applied to filter clear sky data from data detected as cloud-affected by the first test. Finally, statistical analyses tests are performed to remove any outlier, if exists, from clear sky data detected by the first and second tests. It is shown that our proposed algorithm can screen cloud-affected data more effectively in comparison to other cloud screening algorithms. An application of this algorithm to screen observation data of one year collected in Chiba, Japan produces the seasonal means of optical thickness at 500 nm (Angstrom exponent) as ∼0.17(∼1.42), ∼0.38(∼0.98), ∼0.53(∼1.21), and ∼0.21(∼1.28) for winter, spring, summer and autumn seasons, respectively. Depending on the season, the initial seasonal mean optical thicknesses at 500 nm decrease by ∼0.07 to ∼0.16 and mean Angstrom exponents increase by ∼0.087 to ∼0.162 due to cloud screening. An application of this algorithm to dust-loaded atmospheres is also discussed. The proposed algorithm can be applied to any sky radiometer observation site as long as global irradiance data are available.

An observation of physical and optical properties of aerosols was carried out in an urban atmosphere of Nagoya, Japan from 23 July to 4 September 2004. Such observed data were analyzed to understand urban aerosol effects on atmospheric heat budget. Aerosols over our observation area were found to be highly light absorptive with a very low mean single scattering albedo (ω) of 0.72. The presence of such light absorbing aerosols was capable to significantly influence the diurnal cycle of ω, indicating important roles of such aerosols on atmospheric heat budget. An algorithm was developed to estimate the refractive index and density of dry aerosols, and such algorithm produced the mean values of refractive index and density of 1.53-0.038i and 1.7 gcm-3, respectively. Sub micron (d -2, +2.5 ± 6.8Wm-2,74.4 ± 19.0Wm-2 and 2.46 ± 0.61 K/day, respectively. The study suggested that an increase of black carbon (BC) mass fraction could effectively increase the heating rate at surface by trapping more energy (or increasing AFE) in the atmosphere. It was observed that aerosols over our study area could have a positive RFE at TOA if BC mass fraction becomes greater than ~0.05 (or ω becomes smaller than ~0.75). Further, the study suggested that an increase of BC mass fraction by 0.1 could increase RFE at TOA by ~15.8 Wm-2, decrease RFE at surface by ~30.4 Wm-2 and increase heating rate at the surface ~1.39 K/day, respectively.

We developed a cloud profiling radar, named FALCON-I, transmitting frequency modulated continuous wave (FM-CW) at 95GHz. The radar can observe vertical radar reflectivity factor of clouds with high sensitivity and high spatial resolution. The observation of Doppler velocity is more necessary to know the inside structure of clouds and interaction with aerosol. Doppler velocities of clouds can be obtained from the phase shift of the signal by using double-FFT method. As a result of the observations at Chiba University, Doppler velocities of thin clouds were successfully obtained as well as of bright band, and rainfall.

We developed a cloud profiling radar, named FALCON-I, transmitting frequency-modulated continuous wave (FM-CW) at 95 GHz for high sensitivity and high spatial resolution ground-based observations. Millimeter wave at 95 GHz is used to realize high sensitivity to small cloud particles. An FM-CW type radar realizes similar sensitivity with much smaller output power to a pulse type radar. Two 1m-diameter parabolic antennas separated by 1.4m each other are used for transmitting and receiving the wave. The direction of the antennas is fixed at the zenith at this moment. The radar can observe clouds up to 20 km in height with a resolution of 9 m. Beam size of the antenna is as small as 0.2 degree of arc, which corresponds to 15 m at the range of 5 km. Observation results showed that the sensitivity of -34 dBZ is realized at 5 km in range, and good spatial resolutions.

Seasonal variations of tropospheric aerosol properties in Chiba, Japan, are investigated by means of optical monitoring (1999–2005), ground sampling (1998–2004), and wind data. The observation site at Chiba University is located in the urban Chiba area, about 30 km southeast of Tokyo. The aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and Angstrom exponent are derived from the data taken with a sun photometer. The value of AOT at the wavelength of 500 nm exhibits a seasonal variation, showing small values (

Cloud microphysical propenies derived from satellite data during December 2000 and April 2001, Asian Atmospheric Particulate Environment Change Studies (APEX) Intensive Observational Period (IOP), are compared with ground and aircraft measurements. The target clouds are marine stratus and stratocumulus. They appeared over the Amami-Oshima Island, and off the south coast of Kyushu island. The principal goals of the comparison are to understand the characteristics of data obtained from each observing platform, and investigate the potentiality ofsynergistic use of multi platform data. The liquid water paths obtained from satellite (MODIS) observation by using the GLI cloud retrieval algorithm were compared with the ground-based measurements (microwave radiometer). The correlation co-eflicient and the root mean square error between ground and satellite liquid water path was 0.87 and 61.9 g/m2. The satellite-retrieved cloud effective radius agreed with those from the aircraft measurements (FSSP) around the top of the cloud.

We plan to estimate global net primary production (NPP) of vegetation using the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite-II (ADEOS-II) Global Imager (GLI) multi-spectral data. We derive an NPP estimation algorithm from ground measurement data on temperate plants in Japan. By the algorithm, we estimate NPP using a vegetation index based on pattern decomposition (VIPD) for the Mongolian Plateau. The VIPD is derived from Landsat ETM+multi-spectral data, and the resulting NPP estimation is compared with ground data measured in a semi-arid area of Mongolia. The NPP estimation derived from satellite remote sensing data agrees with the ground measurement data within the error range of 15% when all above-ground vegetation NPP is calculated for different vegetation classifications.

This study compares the function of AERONET and SKYNET, which are well known components of the ground-based aerosol-monitoring network. AERONET uses the Cimel CE-318-1 and -2 sun/sky photometer system, and SKYNET adopts Prede POM-O1, -02, and -100P sun/sky photometers (aka skyradiometer). These are available for direct- or diffuse-solar radiation measurements in order to calculate aerosol optical thickness or other aerosol properties such as size distribution, respectively. The CE-318-2 (AERONET) and the POM-100P (SKYNET) instruments have recently been installed at Kinki University in Osaka, Japan, for the retrieval of aerosol data. These have been calibrated at NASA/GSFC and at the Mauna Loa Observatory, respectively, based on the Langley plot method. The difference in the aerosol optical thickness derived from simultaneous measurements using these two types of radiometer was less than 0.008 (

This article discusses common features of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the Mongolian grain farm region during the period of 1986 to 1996. The quantitative characteristics of solar radiation, such as direct, diffuse and global radiation are evaluated in the study through the long term trend.The mean pattern of seasonal variation of PAR shows that the yearly minimum global (direct+diffuse) PAR is 68.9±7.6MJ/(m2 month) in December while the maximum is 307.5±10.3MJ/(m2 month) in May. The yearly summation is 2.22±0.07GJ/(m2yr) and is very stable compared with monthly variations.

Indonesian forest fire took place in wide area of Kalimantan and Sumatera Islands in 1997 and continuously influenced the atmospheric environment and meteorological conditions of South-East Asia nearly throughout the last half of the year. The fire produced various materials including chemical gas and particles, which acted on the optical properties of aerosols in each area. A retrieval algorithm previously developed for MODIS was modified for the NOAA/AVHRR visible and near infrared channels based on the look-up table, which is pre-calculated with 6S code. Local biomass burning aerosol concentrations and contribution factor η of small radius particles over certain ocean areas between the two islands were derived from two channel data of NOAA/AVHRR. The results were validated with surface meteorological data, and sun photometer data.

Wet atmospheric propagation path delay is one of the most important measurement error factors in repeat-pass Interferometric SAR (INSAR) technique for wet regions such as Japan. Its influence can not be neglected for the measurement accuracy of several meters in elevation and several centimeters in surface deformation. The theoretical analysis of height and displacement error by atmospheric phase change for JERS-1/SAR data has showed some severe error even for slight atmospheric inhomogeneity.The simultaneous observation by water vapor radiometer (WVR) at GPS stations in Izu district for about a year has been carried out. The comparison between GPS and WVR wet delay has induced that correlation coefficient was 0.99 and r. m. s. wet delay was about 1.1cm except for rainy day. It was showed that the wet delay information of GPS network would be useful and efficient in the quantitative evaluation of wet atmospheric delay effect.In order to evaluate wet delay effect appeared on INSAR data, we have applied GPS network data to actual phase of two pairs of differential SAR interferogram. The result has concluded that INSAR residual phase change was successfully extracted by using high coherent interferogram but was not very accurately evaluated by GPS delay due to the serious noise factors.
