17. Iridium supported on spinal cubic cobalt oxide catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of CO2to formic acid

Abstract

The utilization of abundantly available CO2feedstock for the synthesis of high-value compounds and fuels is the main focus of catalysis research. Herein, we report the synthesis of different wt% Ir-Co3O4oxide as a heterogeneous catalyst prepared by co-precipitation, followed by the hydrothermal method. The P-XRD analysis revealed the formation of a cubic phase with a high intense (3 1 1) plane with a 6 nm crystal size. The synthesized catalyst was used for direct hydrogenation of CO2assisted by N,N,N',N' tetramethylenylenediamine. Under optimized reaction conditions, the 2.9 wt% Ir-Co3O4catalyst demonstrated an excellent yield of formic acid (399 mmol). The formic acid yield in N,N,N',N;tetramethylenylenediamine is 25 times better than traditionally used trimethylamine. The outstanding performance of the Ir-Co3O4catalyst was due to the stoichiometric amount of active Ir content uniformly distributed on Co3O4support with a mixed Ir+3/4oxidation state, which readily exchanges electrons between Co3O4and Ir during the reaction. The catalyst was successfully recycled up to five times with negligible loss in the yield of formic acid.

18. Correlation of Surface Properties and Photocatalytic Activity of Nanocrystalline TiO2 on the Synthesis Route

Abstract

Present work describes the synthesis of nanocrystalline TiO2 photocatalyst using sol-gel and solution combustion methods and their characterisation by powder X-ray Diffraction, Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy, surface area measurement, FT-IR, FT-Raman, Thermo Gravimetric Analysis, and Transmission Electron Microscopy. Their photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of two nitro aromatic pollutants, viz. para-nitroaniline (PNA) & meta-dinitrobenzoic acid (DNBA) commonly observed in nitroaromatic plants. Performance of the synthesized catalysts was compared with commercial Degussa P25 sample. The photocatalytic degradation and total mineralization were monitored using UV/VIS spectrophotometer and total organic carbon content analysis respectively. The materials properties such as crystallinity and surface hydroxyl group on the nanocrystalline TiO2 played crucial role for the total mineralization of the nitroaromatics.

Abstract

Abstract: A photocatalytic reactor using ultraviolet light emitting diode (UV-LED) source and TiO2 coated quartz tube (TiO2-QT) has been developed and successfully applied for the degradation of three different dyes such as malachite green (MG), methylene blue (MB), and rhodamine B (RhB). The TiO2 coated surface and solid catalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption measurements and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy techniques for their structural, textural and electronic properties. The kinetic studies for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes were carried out and further confirmed by high pressure liquid chromatography and chemical oxygen demand analysis. Electrical energy per order (E Eo ) for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes has been calculated. The operational parameters such as effect of flow rate, pH, and initial dye concentration has been studied for the degradation of MG dye to optimize the designed photocatalytic reactor. In addition to this, the degradation pathway for MG dye has been proposed based on the electro spray ionization-mass spectrometry analysis. Abstract

Abstract: UV-light emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) was used for the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye to study the various parameters, effectiveness and feasibility for designing of photocatalytic reactor based on UV-LED irradiation in different conditions. The photocatalytic experiments were conducted using 5 UV-LED lights with same specification and Degussa P-25 TiO2 as a photocatalyst. The effects of operational parameters such as catalysts loading, initial dye concentration, pH, addition of H2O2 and effect of metal ions (Zn2+, Ag+, Fe3+, Cu2+ and Cd2+) were studied for the photocatalytic degradation of RhB. A detailed degradation pathway has been suggested, which was based on the electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis. It was observed that the degradation of RhB occurred via N-de-ethylation process. N-de-ethylated product was further oxidized into acids and alcohols. The complete mineralization of RhB dye (2.08×10−5 M) was confirmed by chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), total inorganic carbon (TIC) and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The optimum conditions for higher percentage degradation of RhB dye obtained with amount of catalyst (1.6g/L), dye concentration (6.26×10−5 M) and pH=3.05. Results demonstrated that the UV-LED/TiO2 process can effectively degrade RhB dye with optimum conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
