Diastasis recti (DR) is characterized by the deviation of the abdominal rectus muscle due to widening of the linea alba and laxity of the abdominal wall musculature.1,2 This condition affects the quality of life, in terms of performance of activities of daily living and physical tasks.3-7 Several techniques have been described to correct DR.11 This prospective research aimed at comparing the traditional approaches vs endoscopic plication for DR repair in terms of safety, effectiveness and satisfaction of the patients based on patient-reported outcome measures via the BODY-Q abdomen scale. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective multicenter study in 2 departments of aesthetic and plastic surgery, Department of Plastic Surgery, San Carlo of Nancy Hospital, Rome (group I) and Hospital Británico de Buenos Aires, Argentina group II). A total of 85 consecutive patients treated using abdominoplasty access (group I) and 85 consecutive patients treated using an endoscopic approach (group II) were enrolled in the study. The minimum follow-up was 12 months. Results: Descriptive statistics were used to report the counts and frequencies for categorical data. Continuous normally and non-normally distributed data were described as means with standard deviations and medians with interquartile ranges as appropriate. All analyses were performed using the STATA/IC 16.0 software. Conclusion: Our multicenter experience reveals that open and minimally invasive approaches are viable options. Identifying the optimal approach for DR repair should also rely on the patient's desired treatment outcome.

New Italian data on the distribution of the Annex I Habitats are reported in this contribution. Specifically, 9 new occurrences in Natura 2000 sites are presented and 34 new cells are added in the EEA 10 km × 10 km reference grid. The new data refer to the Italian administrative regions of Abruzzo, Apulia, Calabria, Latium, Lombardy, Marche, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany and Umbria.

RESUMO O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar a variação da umidade da madeira no processo de fabricação de painéis aglomerados. A monitorização de umidade foi realizada desde sua chegada no pátio da indústria, até a entrada das partículas nos secadores rotativos. Verificou-se uma significativa variação de umidade nas fases do processo, inclusive, na mistura de partículas que alimentam os secadores rotativos. Concluiu-se que o nível de alteração de umidade verificado é particularmente elevado em alguns pontos, podendo influenciar na qualidade das chapas produzidas.

Summary: Chloroplasts develop from undifferentiated plastids in response to light. In angiosperms, after the perception of light, the Elongated Hypocotyl 5 (HY5) transcription factor initiates photomorphogenesis, and two families of transcription factors known as GOLDEN2-LIKE (GLK) and GATA are considered master regulators of chloroplast development. In addition, the MIR171-targeted SCARECROW-LIKE GRAS transcription factors also impact chlorophyll biosynthesis. The extent to which these proteins carry out conserved roles in non-seed plants is not known. Using the model liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, we show that GLK controls chloroplast biogenesis, and HY5 shows a small conditional effect on chlorophyll content. Chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq) revealed that MpGLK has a broader set of targets than has been reported in angiosperms. We also identified a functional GLK homolog in green algae. In summary, our data support the hypothesis that GLK carries out a conserved role relating to chloroplast biogenesis in land plants and green algae.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar o efeito de dois modelos de corte (radial e tangencial), considerando toras de duas classes diamétricas nas dimensões de tábuas serradas de Eucalyptus grandis e Eucalyptus dunni. As tábuas tangenciais apresentaram larguras superiores e comprimentos mais homogêneos, com menor variação em espessura. O desdobro radial apresentou maior variação em largura, mas aumentou o número de tábuas curtas. A conclusão principal é de que o desdobro tangencial, nas condições deste experimento, resultou em peças de maior dimensão e, portanto é o mais indicado.

There has been continuous progress in diabetes management over the last few decades, not least due to the widespread dissemination of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and automated insulin delivery systems. These technological advances have radically changed the daily lives of people living with diabetes, improving the quality of life of both children and their families. Despite this, hypoglycemia remains the primary side-effect of insulin therapy. Based on a systematic review of the available scientific evidence, this paper aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for recognizing, risk stratifying, treating, and managing patients with hypoglycemia. The objective of these recommendations is to unify the behavior of pediatric diabetologists with respect to the timely recognition and prevention of hypoglycemic episodes and the correct treatment of hypoglycemia, especially in patients using CGM or advanced hybrid closed-loop systems. All authors have long experience in the specialty and are members of the Italian Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology. The goal of treating hypoglycemia is to raise blood glucose above 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) and to prevent further decreases. Oral glucose at a dose of 0.3 g/kg (0.1 g/kg for children using “smart pumps” or hybrid closed loop systems in automated mode) is the preferred treatment for the conscious individual with blood glucose

Brucellosis is an important zoonotic disease affecting animals and subsistence harvesters in the circumarctic. We investigated recent trends (2015–2022) of brucellosis seropositivity in caribou (Rangifer tarandus) and muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) in the Central Canadian Arctic by using data from community-based wildlife health surveillance programs. The overall sample prevalence of Brucella antibodies was 10.0% (n = 271) in muskoxen and 15.5% (n = 277) in caribou. Sample seroprevalence in muskoxen varied geographically with an increasing trend of exposure on NW Victoria Island (from 0% to 36.8% between 2016 and 2022; Kendall tau = 0.283, p = 0.001). The presence of Brucella suis biovar 4 was confirmed by culture from clinical cases in this area. Our results indicate that Brucella suis biovar 4 continues to circulate in the Central Canadian Arctic in caribou and muskoxen and may be now circulating in muskoxen independently from caribou. These findings highlight the need to better understand the ecology and drivers of brucellosis emergence in Arctic multi-host systems.

Objective To evaluate safety and mechanism of action of mezagitamab (TAK-079), an anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody, in patients with moderate to severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).Methods A phase 1b double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre study was conducted in patients with SLE receiving standard background therapy. Eligible patients were adults who met the 2012 SLICC or ACR criteria for diagnosis, had a baseline SLE Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) score of ≥6 and were positive for anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies and/or anti-extractable nuclear antigens antibodies. Patients received 45 mg, 90 mg or 135 mg of mezagitamab or placebo every 3 weeks over 12 weeks. Primary endpoints were safety and tolerability. Secondary endpoints included pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Exploratory assessments included disease activity scales, deep immune profiling and interferon pathway analysis.Results 22 patients received at least one dose of either mezagitamab or placebo. In patients exposed to mezagitamab (n=17), drug was well tolerated. Adverse event (AEs) were balanced across treatment groups, with no treatment emergent AEs exceeding grade 2. Responder analyses for Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus Disease Area and Severity Index (CLASI) and SLEDAI-2K did not reveal any observable differences across treatment groups. However, there was a trend for more profound skin responses among patients with higher CLASI scores (>10) at baseline. Pharmacodynamic analysis showed median CD38 receptor occupancy up to 88.4% on CD38+ natural killer cells with concurrent depletion of these cells up to 90% in the 135 mg group. Mean reductions in IgG and autoantibodies were less than 20% in all dose groups. Cytometry by time of flight and type 1 interferon gene analysis revealed unique fingerprints that are indicative of a broad immune landscape shift following CD38 targeting.Conclusions Mezagitamab had a favourable safety profile in patients with moderate to severe SLE and elicited a pharmacodynamic effect consistent with CD38+ cell depletion. These findings reveal novel insights into the drug’s mechanism of action and support the continued investigation of mezagitamab in autoimmune diseases.

Abstract Lagoecia cuminoides L. is a very rare and threatened taxon in Italy, never studied before for its ecology and potential use for human consumption. Furthermore, few data are available on the biological activities of its metabolites. A phytosociological study was carried out in the only two Italian sites, and its state of conservation was also evaluated according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) protocol. The collected plant material was used to make two types of extracts: hot water infusion to evaluate the use of this plant as tea and hydroalcoholic extraction to evaluate the use of it in herbal liqueur preparation. The presence of functional compounds in the extracts were investigated by gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry techniques. Ten non volatiles compounds were identified in the extracts, most of which derivatives of quercetin. Thirty-five volatiles compounds were also identified in the plant aerial part and extracts belonging to the chemical class of terpenoids, and among them β-farnesene, thymol, γ-terpinene and p-cymene were the most abundant. The species is characterized by compounds known for their health effects and for its potential applications for human consumption, being this species already used as decoction in some countries of Middle East. Thanks to its characteristic behaviour to grow in limiting pedoclimatic conditions this species can be potentially used in organic farms situated in rural marginal areas.

In this contribution, new data concerning the distribution of native vascular flora in Italy are presented. It includes new records, confirmations, and exclusions to the Italian administrative regions. Nomenclatural and distribution updates, published elsewhere, and corrigenda are provided as supplementary material.

Abstract Assessing wildlife health in remote regions requires a multi-faceted approach, which commonly involves convenient samplings and the need of identifying and targeting relevant and informative indicators. We applied a novel wildlife health framework and critically assessed the value of different indicators for understanding the health status and trends of an endangered tundra caribou population. Samples and data from the Dolphin and Union caribou herd were obtained between 2015 and 2021, from community-based surveillance programs and from captured animals. We documented and categorized indicators into health determinants (infectious diseases and trace elements), processes (cortisol, pathology), and health outcomes (pregnancy and body condition). During a recent period of steep population decline, our results indicated a relatively good body condition and pregnancy rates, and decreasing levels of stress, along with a low adult cow survival. We detected multiple factors as potential contributors to the reduced survival, including Brucella suis biovar 4, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and lower hair trace minerals. These results remark the need of targeted studies to improve detection and investigations on caribou mortalities. We also identified differences in health indicators between captured and hunter sampled caribou, highlighting the importance of accounting for sampling biases. This integrative approach that drew on multiple data sources has provided unprecedented knowledge on the health in this herd and highlights the value of documenting individual animal health to understand causes of wildlife declines.

The growing adoption of behind-the-meter (BTM) photovoltaic (PV) systems, electric vehicle (EV) home chargers, and heat pumps (HPs) is causing increased grid congestion issues, particularly in power distribution grids. Leveraging BTM prosumer flexibility offers a cost-effective and readily available solution to address these issues without resorting to expensive and time-consuming infrastructure upgrades. This work evaluated the effectiveness of this solution by introducing a novel modeling framework that combines a rolling horizon (RH) optimal power flow (OPF) algorithm with a customized piecewise linear cost function. This framework allows for the individual control of flexible BTM assets through various control measures, while modeling the power flow (PF) and accounting for grid constraints. We demonstrated the practical utility of the proposed framework in an exemplary residential region in Schutterwald, Germany. To this end, we constructed a PF-ready grid model for the region, geographically allocated a future BTM asset mix, and generated tailored load and generation profiles for each household. We found that BTM storage systems optimized for self-consumption can fully resolve feed-in violations at HV/MV stations but only mitigate 35% of the future load violations. Implementing additional control measures is key for addressing the remaining load violations. While curative measures, e.g., temporarily limiting EV charging or HP usage, have minimal impacts, proactive measures that control both the charging and discharging of BTM storage systems can effectively address the remaining load violations, even for grids that are already operating at or near full capacity.

The objective of this study was to evaluate microbial leakage by means of genome counts, through the implant–abutment interface in dental implants with different Morse taper abutments. Fifty-six samples were prepared and divided in four groups: CMC TB (14 Cylindrical Implants–14 TiBase Abutments), CMX TB (14 Conical Implants–14 TiBase Abutments), CMX PU (14 Conical Implants–14 Universal Abutment) and CMX U (14 Tapered Implants–14 UCLA Abutments). Assemblies had their interface submerged in saliva as the contaminant. Samples were subjected either to thermomechanical cycling (2 × 106 mechanical cycles with frequency of 5 Hz and load of 120 N simultaneously with thermal cycles of 5–55 °C) or thermal cycling (5–55 °C). After cycling, the contents from the inner parts of assemblies were collected and analyzed using the Checkerboard DNA–DNA hybridization technique. Significant differences in the total genome counts were found after both thermomechanical or thermal cycling: CMX U > CMX PU > CMX TB > CMC TB. There were also significant differences in individual bacterial counts in each of the groups (p < 0.05). Irrespective of mechanical cycling, the type of abutment seems to influence not only the total microbial leakage through the interface, but also seems to significantly reflect differences considering individual target species.

The intersection of gender and ethnicity or race lies at the root of structural discrimination and racist practices for accessing the labor market and in the workplace. This discrimination is particularly evident for women and LGBTQIA+ individuals who either belong to ethnic minorities or are migrants. However, numerous other social drivers (e.g., age, class, origins) and external factors (e.g., prejudices, gender‐based violence) further hinder their participation in the work domain and their attainment of fair labor conditions. This article explores how gender, ethnicity, and race intersect and operate with other conditions and factors to perpetuate the precarity and exploitation of women and LGBTQIA+ individuals who find themselves at the nexus of varied intersectional axes. The discussion centers around two neoliberal substate units in the Global North (South Tyrol, in Italy, and Catalonia, Spain) that register low unemployment rates and high rates of migration and that are home to historical, linguistic, and ethnic minorities. This empirical article provides for an informed debate on the lived experience of precarity and exploitation of women and LGBTQIA+ workers, and an analysis of how neoliberal substate units’ labor and gender policies could be reformed.

Implant failure in the maxilla often determine significant bone loss. Patients that had already experienced regenerative surgeries such as sinus lift and/or the placement of zygomatic implants may want to avoid further complicate rehabilitation protocols. Pterygoid implants, when feasible, offer the unique opportunity of immediate loading bypassing the maxillary sinuses an extending the anterior-posterior spread of the future prosthesis. The present case series documented the long-term success of pterygoid implants in the rehabilitation of patients who had experienced the failure of zygomatic implants and standard implants in the posterior maxilla.

BackgroundYouth mental health problems are a major public health concern and are strongly associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Technology-assisted parenting programs can intervene with ACEs that are within a parent’s capacity to modify. However, engagement with such programs is suboptimal. ObjectiveThis review aims to describe and appraise the efficacy of strategies used to engage parents in technology-assisted parenting programs targeting ACEs on the behavioral and subjective outcomes of engagement. MethodsUsing PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) reporting guidelines, we conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed papers that described the use of at least 1 engagement strategy in a technology-assisted parenting program targeting ACEs that are within a parent’s capacity to modify. A total of 8 interdisciplinary bibliographic databases (CENTRAL, CINAHL, Embase, OVID MEDLINE, OVID PsycINFO, Scopus, ACM, and IEEE Xplore) and gray literature were searched. The use of engagement strategies and measures was narratively synthesized. Associations between specific engagement strategies and engagement outcomes were quantitatively synthesized using the Stouffer method of combining P values. ResultsWe identified 13,973 articles for screening. Of these, 156 (1.12%) articles were eligible for inclusion, and 29 (18.2%) of the 156 were associated with another article; thus, 127 studies were analyzed. Preliminary evidence for a reliable association between 5 engagement strategies (involving parents in a program’s design, delivering a program on the web compared to face-to-face, use of personalization or tailoring features, user control features, and provision of practical support) and greater engagement was found. Three engagement strategies (professional support features, use of videos, and behavior change techniques) were not found to have a reliable association with engagement outcomes. ConclusionsThis review provides a comprehensive assessment and description of the use of engagement strategies and engagement measures in technology-assisted parenting programs targeting parenting-related ACEs and extends the current evidence with preliminary quantitative findings. Heterogeneous definition and measurement of engagement and insufficient engagement outcome data were caveats to this synthesis. Future research could use integrated definitions and measures of engagement to support robust systematic evaluations of engagement in this context. Abstract Aims The HFA‐PEFF algorithm (Heart Failure Association‐Pre‐test assessment, Echocardiography and natriuretic peptide score, Functional testing in cases of uncertainty, Final aetiology) is a three‐step algorithm to diagnose heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). It provides a three‐level likelihood of HFpEF: low (score 4). HFpEF may be confirmed in individuals with a score > 4 (rule‐in approach). The second step of the algorithm is based on echocardiographic features and natriuretic peptide levels. The third step implements diastolic stress echocardiography (DSE) for controversial diagnostic cases. We sought to validate the three‐step HFA‐PEFF algorithm against a haemodynamic diagnosis of HFpEF based on rest and exercise right heart catheterization (RHC). Methods and results Seventy‐three individuals with exertional dyspnoea underwent a full diagnostic work‐up following the HFA‐PEFF algorithm, including DSE and rest/exercise RHC. The association between the HFA‐PEFF score and a haemodynamic diagnosis of HFpEF, as well as the diagnostic performance of the HFA‐PEFF algorithm vs. RHC, was assessed. The diagnostic performance of left atrial (LA) strain 3. LA strain alone had a sensitivity and specificity of 39% and 14% for haemodynamic HFpEF, increasing to 55% and 22% when corrected for E/E′. Conclusions As compared with rest/exercise RHC, the HFA‐PEFF score lacks sensitivity: Half of the patients were wrongly classified as non‐cardiac dyspnoea after non‐invasive tests, with a minimal impact of DSE in modifying HFpEF likelihood.

The populations usually attributed to Solenopsis bivonae (Tineo) M.B.Crespo, Serra & A.Juan are investigated from a taxonomical and morphological viewpoint. Within this species complex, four new subspecies occurring in Sicily and Calabria are recognized, such as subsp. bivonae, subsp. madoniarum, subsp. peloritana and subsp. brutia. In addition, a new species from Cyprus described as S. meikleana and S. bacchettae from Sardinia must be included in this group. The synonymy, typification, description, seed testa morphology, chorology, ecology, illustrations, conservation status, and examined specimens for each taxon are provided. Besides, the analytical keys, distribution maps, and phytosociological arrangement regarding these taxa are given too.

In this study, the garrigues occurring in Apulia and neighboring territories (southern Italy) were surveyed in order to clarify their syntaxonomical arrangement. Many contributions previously focused on this vegetation type, often adopting different and sometimes contrasting treatments from both the nomenclature and syntaxonomical aspects. Our investigations are supported by the multivariate analysis of a dataset containing 292 phytosociological relevés, whose resulting cluster dendrogram highlights the hierarchical relationships between the examined plant communities. Overall, twenty-one associations with several sub-associations were recognized. Some of them are already known in the literature, whereas others are described here for the first time. As concerns the syntaxonomical framework, this vegetation is attributable to the class Cisto cretici-Micromerietea julianae, which in this territory is represented by the order Cisto eriocephali-Ericetalia manipuliflorae and by two alliances: Cisto eriocephali-Ericion multiflorae, grouping the more thermophilous associations usually distributed along coastlines and at low altitudes; and Cytiso spinescentis-Saturejion montanae, including the mesophilic associations occurring in mountain and sub-mountain belts.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, present a cost-effective solution for the swift collection of data from vast and remote areas that are otherwise difficult to access. The Mediterranean Basin, known for being a hotspot for plant biodiversity, hosts several habitats and taxa of significant naturalistic value. However, many of these areas are often inaccessible to botanists, making exploration and research challenging. The aim of this paper is to involve the utilization of drone surveys and open-source software for botanical research. Our primary goal is to show the effectiveness of these tools in the field and demonstrate their practical application in Natura 2000 sites. The protected area chosen for this research is Rocca di Novara, situated in northeastern Sicily. Thanks to our drone investigations, we were able to capture images of a mountainside that is inaccessible to humans. This allowed us to observe the habitat of some species in detail. One of the most fascinating discoveries was the reappearance of Saxifraga callosa subsp. australis, which had not been confirmed in this area for over 140 years. Using drones for botanical research can boost field research, making monitoring easier and more cost-effective over time, especially in Natura 2000 sites.

IntroductionJournalism is essential in addressing climate change. Journalists' constructions of climate change issues, worldviews, and proposed solutions legitimise those aspects that are made commonsensical and are given discursive salience. The news media has often constructed climate change as a purely scientific issue whose solutions rely on technological interventions- thus neglecting climate change's cultural and political economics. This paper seeks to situate climate change journalism research within ecoCultural Studies and Environmental Sociology.MethodsThrough articulation and metabolic rift theories combined with discourse analysis techniques, this study examines how four weekly newspapers (the Sunday Times, the Mail & Guardian, the City Press, and the Sunday Independent) in South Africa reproduced and re/presented neoliberal climate change solutions anchored on “green” and “clean” transition discourses - from 2011 to 2018.ResultsThe majority of discourse actors support the green economy initiative, with its normalisation facilitated by actors like scientists, media, and politicians. This discourse, prominent during both Zuma and Ramaphosa's administrations, has been integrated into South Africa's energy blueprints, emphasising job creation and cleaner air. While perpetuating capitalist inequalities, the green economy has been championed as a national project aligning with public aspirations. News media often portrays climate change solutions through a neoliberal, techno-optimistic lens, emphasising “green economy” and “sustainable development”. These solutions, paired with market principles, balance economic growth and environmental responsibility.

In response to the accidental exhumation of three ancient trees by farmers, we conducted a multidisciplinary study based on the stratigraphic analysis of boreholes, carbon-14 dating, aerial photo interpretation, and analysis of palaeobotanical and archaeological evidences. We reconstructed the formation and evolution during Roman times of a first “continuous” and then “discontinuous” deltaic strandplain at the mouth of the Carapelle Stream in the Tavoliere di Puglia Plain—the second-largest plain in Italy. Ttwo main phases can be recognised in the evolution of the Carapelle deltaic strandplain: 1) a first phase, lasted until ca. the birth of Christ, was characterised by a regular and continuous construction of sand ridges one leaning against the other; 2) a second phase, lasted more or less from the birth of Christ to the termination of the construction of the deltaic strandplain, was characterised by the discontinuous construction of sand ridges/coastal barriers with the isolation of lagoons/ponds, and by evidences of alluvial events. The most probable climatic–environmental scenario to have formed the Roman-period deltaic strandplain implied that: 1) the first phase was triggered by a higher total amount of precipitations, but with less extreme alluvial events; 2) the second phase was triggered by a total amount of precipitation lower than the previous period, but with higher occurrence of extreme alluvial events and/or by extreme alluvial events separated by longer period of low precipitations. This second phase was enhanced by the opening of vegetation. The passage between the first and second phase of the Carapelle deltaic strandplain coincides with the passage from overall negative NAO index to an overall positive NAO index.
