1. D-D nuclear fusion processes induced in polyethylene foams by TW Laser-generated plasma

Abstract

Deuterium-Deuterium fusion processes were generated by focusing the 3 TW PALS Laser on solid deuterated polyethylene targets placed in vacuum. Deuterium ion acceleration of the order of 4 MeV was obtained using laser irradiance Iλ2 ∼ 5 × 1016 W μm2/cm2 on the target. Thin and thick targets, at low and high density, were irradiated and plasma properties were monitored “on line” and “off line”. The ion emission from plasma was monitored with Thomson Parabola Spectrometer, track detectors and ion collectors. Fast semiconductor detectors based on SiC and fast plastic scintillators, both employed in time-of-flight configuration, have permitted to detect the characteristic 3.0 MeV protons and 2.45 MeV neutrons emission from the nuclear fusion reactions. From massive absorbent targets we have evaluated the neutron flux by varying from negligible values up to about 5 × 107 neutrons per laser shot in the case of foams targets, indicating a reaction rate of the order of 108 fusion events per laser shot using “advanced targets”.

Abstract

The maximum ion energy and acceleration efficiency have to be increased for practical applications of intense ion beams produced by intense short laser pulses incident on a thin foil. For this aim, we propose to use foil with a microscopic structure on the front size. We have prepared such targets by depositing a monolayer of polystyrene nanospheres of a size comparable to laser wavelength on a thin foil. The damage threshold of the produced targets is found experimentally above 3.5 × 109 W/cm2 for a nanosecond pedestal and above 1011 W/cm2 for femtosecond prepulses.

Abstract

X-rays and forward ion emission from laser-generated plasma in the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration regime of different targets with 10-μm thickness, irradiated at Prague Asterix Laser System (PALS) laboratory at about 1016 W/cm2 intensity, employing a 1,315 nm-wavelength laser with a 300-ps pulse duration, are investigated. The photon and ion emissions were mainly measured using Silicon Carbide (SiC) detectors in time-of-flight configuration and X-ray streak camera imaging. The results show that the maximum proton acceleration value and the X-ray emission yield growth are proportional to the atomic number of the irradiated targets. The X-ray emission is not isotropic, with energies increasing from 1 keV for light atomic targets to about 2.5 keV for heavy atomic targets. The laser focal position significantly influences the X-ray emission from light and heavy irradiated targets, indicating the possible induction of self-focusing effects when the laser beam is focalized in front of the light target surface and of electron density enhancement for focalization inside the target.

18. Hybrid graphene-based material promising target in laser matter interaction

Abstract

Graphene oxide foils implanted with copper ions at low energy and high dose, have been proposed as hybrid graphene-based materials suitable to be laser irradiated in vacuum to produce hot plasmas. The special lattice structure of the graphene oxide foil can improve the propagation of the laser accelerated electrons inside the foil and to enhance the electron density emerging from the rear foil surface. In such conditions the electric field developed in the non-equilibrium plasma increases and consequently in the forward ion acceleration. The foils have been optimized in thickness and they were irradiated with optimized laser parameters in order to produce high energy and quasi-monoenergetic proton beams by the femtosecond laser at the Institute of Plasma Physics and Laser Microfusion in Warsaw, Poland. Gaf chromic film and silicon carbide detectors were used to monitor the plasma properties and to measure the velocity of the emitted protons and carbon ions from plasma.

Abstract

Bismuth is a biocompatible material that can be employed in the form of nanoparticles to be used as a possible alternative contrast medium for diagnostics. In particular, it has been prepared as spherical nanoparticles in liquid solution by using the technique of the pulsed laser ablation in water. The high atomic number Bi nanoparticles in the solution show surface plasmon resonance effects, high mass absorption coefficient for soft X-ray interaction and high electron and nuclear stopping powers for electrons and ion beams. This biocompatible solution can be injected into living systems, such as mice, in order to study the up-take effect in different organs with a high contrast spatial localization of the X-ray images in the tissues in which the nanoparticles are confined. The high contrast medium for high-resolution imaging in biological systems can be also used as targeting for successive exposure to ionizing radiation during radiotherapy or hyperthermia of diseased cells. The obtained results demonstrate high contrast images of Bi nanoparticles in biological environment by using the X-ray fluorescence in the electron microscopy and the X-ray absorption in mice.

Abstract

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has been irradiated by a ns pulsed IR laser in vacuum and the radiation effects induced by the coherent radiation, above a threshold fluence, produce a non-equilibrium plasma and material ablation. The laser absorption can be enhanced using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) embedded in the polymer. The laser-generated plasma has been characterized, whereas the ion emission from both the virgin PDMS and the PDMS + AuNPs sheets has been analysed both in mass and energy. Morphological investigations, optical spectroscopy and compositional analyses have been performed. The adopted laser treatment can be employed to modify the properties of PDMS with and without AuNPs inducing a local enrichment of microcrystalline silicon in both cases.

Abstract

At the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare-Laboratorio Nazionale del Sud of Catania (Italy) during the last years a research program has been carried out to improve the performance of the superconducting cyclotron electrostatic deflectors. In this kind of accelerators beam extraction is realized by means of two electrostatic deflectors generating a 140 kV/cm maximum electric field in a small gap (6 to 8 mm). These devices have to work in presence of a high magnetic field ([less than or equal to] 5 T), strongly affecting their performance from the electrostatic point of view. This is mainly the focusing of the electrons emitted by the cathode for field effect. The physical characteristics of the cathode surface influence the electrostatic behavior especially in terms of work function and resistivity. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the surface have to be studied in order to evaluate the effects of high power beam dissipation on the cathode during the extraction process in the accelerator, also influencing the electrostatic performance. Looking to these constraints, a detailed study of the TIN (titanium nitride) features for this application has been carried out. Considering the electrical and mechanical properties, TIN seems to be a material suitable for this application. Electrostatic tests carried out in a deflector simulator confirm that TIN should represent an attractive solution. The results obtained with a surface characterization based on different physical analysis methods will be presented.

Abstract

At the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare Laboratorio Nazionale del Sud of Catania, a K = 800 superconducting cyclotron is in operation since 1994. The accelerator beam extraction is accomplished using electrostatic deflectors constituted by HV electrodes generating electric fields to 140 kV/cm in 6 to 8 mm gaps. The electrostatic performance is strongly dependent on the presence of high magnetic fields (up to 5 T) and of high ion energy and intensity of heavy ion beams. The behavior of these systems is mainly determined by the field electron emission effects on the cathode surface, by electron focalization processes due to the magnetic field and by heating effects due to the ion beams. A detailed study of these effects is under development starting with point, the characterization of the electrode surface vs. the material used (Ti, Cu, stainless steel, etc.) and of the best mechanical and chemical treatment available. Moreover, we are studying the electrostatic performance by using titanium surfaces and nitriding over a wide temperature range (300 to 800 [degrees] C). Preliminary results concerning the use of thermal processed polished surfaces are presented and discussed.

Abstract

Thomson Spectrometers (TPs) are widely used for beam diagnostic as they provide simultaneous information on charge over mass ratio, energy and momentum of detected ions. A new TP design has been realized at INFN-LNS within the LILIA (Laser Induced Light Ion Acceleration) and ELIMED (MEDical application at ELI-Beamlines) projects. This paper reports on the construction details of the TP and on its experimental tests performed at PALS laboratory in Prague, with the ASTERIX IV laser system. Reported data are obtained with polyethylene and polyvinyl alcohol solid targets, they have been compared with data obtained from other detectors. Consistency among results confirms the correct functioning of the new TP. The main features, characterizing the design, are a wide acceptance of the deflection sector and a tunability of the, partially overlapping, magnetic and electric fields that allow to resolve ions with energy up to about 40 MeV for protons.

Abstract

ELI-Beamlines is one of the pillars of the pan-European project ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure). It will be an ultra high-intensity, high repetition-rate, femtosecond laser facility whose main goal is generation and applications of high-brightness X-ray sources and accelerated charged particles in different fields. Particular care will be devoted to the potential applicability of laser-driven ion beams for medical treatments of tumors. Indeed, such kind of beams show very interesting peculiarities and, moreover, laser-driven based accelerators can really represent a competitive alternative to conventional machines since they are expected to be more compact in size and less expensive. The ELIMED project was launched thanks to a collaboration established between FZU-ASCR (ELI-Beamlines) and INFN-LNS researchers. Several European institutes have already shown a great interest in the project aiming to explore the possibility to use laser-driven ion (mostly proton) beams for several applications with a particular regard for medical ones. To reach the project goal several tasks need to be fulfilled, starting from the optimization of laser-target interaction to dosimetric studies at the irradiation point at the end of a proper designed transport beam-line. Researchers from LNS have already developed and successfully tested a high-dispersive power Thomson Parabola Spectrometer, which is the first prototype of a more performing device to be used within the ELIMED project. Also a Magnetic Selection System able to produce a small pencil beam out of a wide energy distribution of ions produced in laser-target interaction has been realized and some preliminary work for its testing and characterization is in progress. In this contribution the status of the project will be reported together with a short description of the of the features of device recently developed.

Abstract

Laser accelerated proton beams represent nowadays an attractive alternative to the conventional ones and they have been proposed in different research fields. In particular, the interest has been focused in the possibility of replacing conventional accelerating machines with laser-based accelerators in order to develop a new concept of hadrontherapy facilities, which could result more compact and less expensive. With this background the ELIMED (ELIMED: ELI-Beamlines MEDical applications) research project has been launched by LNS-INFN researchers (Laboratori Nazionali del Sud-Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Catania, IT) and ASCR-FZU researchers (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic-Fyzikální ústar, Prague, Cz), within the pan-European ELI-Beamlines facility framework. Its main purposes are the demonstration of future applications in hadrontherapy of optically accelerated protons and the realization of a laser-accelerated ion transport beamline for multidisciplinary applications. Several challenges, starting from laser-target interaction and beam transport development, up to dosimetric and radiobiological issues, need to be overcome in order to reach the final goals. The design and the realization of a preliminary beam handling and dosimetric system and of an advanced spectrometer for high energy (multi-MeV) laser-accelerated ion beams will be shortly presented in this work.

Abstract

The purpose of this work is the characteristic modification by ion implantation of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, and a preliminary study of its surface. This biomedical material has been chosen for its excellent chemical and physical properties. An ultraviolet-pulsed laser of 248 nm was employed to produce, by laser ablation, C and Ti ions of different charges with current densities of the order of 10 mA/cm(2). The ions were accelerated by the application of a positive high voltage, 30 kV, on the target support to accelerate ions to implant the polyethylene surfaces up to a depth of about 200 nm. Preliminary results about surface properties indicate that implanted surfaces have higher wettability and micro-hardness values with respect to unimplanted ones

High-power pulsed lasers emitting IR and visible radiation with intensities ranging between 10^8 and 10^16 W/cm2, pulse duration from 0.4 to 9 ns and energy from 100 mJ up to 600 J, operating in single mode or in repetition rate, can be employed to produce non-equilibrium plasma in vacuum by irradiating solid targets. Such a laser-produced plasma generates highly charged and high-energy ions of various elements, as well as soft and hard X-ray radiations. Heavy ions with charge state up to 58+ and kinetic energy up to 10 MeV are detected. The plasma emits ion current densities of the order of tens of mA/cm^2. Interesting application possibilities of the generated plasmas concerning the ion implantation technique, the laser ion sources, the high intensity and resolution X-ray sources, the laser propulsion technique and the nuclear reaction of light elements are presented and discussed.
