Purpose: This study investigated the magnitude, direction, and temporal aspects of the force applied during instrumentation with a piezoelectric ultrasonic periodontal scaler, compared this force with recommendations in the literature, and assessed the influence of the profession (dentist or dental hygienist) and calculus hardness. Materials and Methods: The force applied by ten dental hygienists and six dentists during debridement of comparatively soft and hard artificial dental calculus with a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler was recorded in-vitro. The total force and its components in three axes were statistically analysed. Results: During debridement of soft artificial dental calculus, the mean total force applied by dental hygienists was 0.34 N (± 0.18 N, range: 0.13 N to 0.59 N) and by dentists 0.28 N (± 0.33 N, range: 0.06 N to 0.95 N), and the total force exceeded 0.5 N approximately 23% and 14% of the time for dental hygienists and dentists, respectively. During debridement of hard artificial dental calculus, the mean total force applied by dental hygienists was 0.63 N (± 0.40 N, range: 0.28 N to 1.64 N) and by dentists 0.57 N (± 0.17 N, range: 0.34 N to 0.76 N); the total force exceeded 0.5 N more than half of the time for both professions. On average, dental hygienists applied 1.85x (p = 0.04) and dentists 2.04x (p = 0.06) higher force on hard than on soft artificial calculus. However, dental hygienists and dentists used similar forces during the debridement of both hard (p = 1.00) and soft (p = 0.26) calculus. Conclusion: The force applied during the debridement of hard artificial dental calculus was statistically significantly higher than during the debridement of soft artificial dental calculus. No statistically significant difference between dentists and dental hygienists was found. The pore structure of coal plays a key role in the effectiveness of gas extraction. Conventional hydraulic fracturing techniques have limited success in modifying the pore structure using clean fracturing fluid (CFF), and the stimulating effects of ultrasonic can enhance the effectiveness of CFF in modifying coal pore structures. To research the effects of ultrasonic stimulation on the pore structure of medium to high-rank coal when using CFF, this study employed mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption (LT-N2A) methods to analyze the changes in pore structures after cooperative modification. The results indicate that the pore volume and surface area of medium to high rank coal exhibit an increase and followed by a decrease with increasing Ro,max values, while the average pore diameter and permeability demonstrate a decrease and followed by an increase with Ro,max. Although there are some variations in the results of MIP and LT-N2A analysis for different pore size ranges, the overall findings suggest that ultrasonic stimulation in conjunction with CFF effectively alters the coal pore structure. The most significant improvement was observed in coking coal, where pore volume increased by 22%, pore area decreased by 11% and tortuosity decreased by 47%. The improvement of lean coal is the smallest, the pore volume increases by about 7%, and the surface area decreases by about 14%. It is found that the modification of coal pore volume is mainly concentrated in transition pores and macropores. The current study aims to evaluate the performance of the ultrasonic vibration-assisted milling (USVAM) process when machining two different materials with high deviations in mechanical properties, specifically 7075 aluminium alloy and Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. Additionally, this study seeks to develop an AI-based model to predict the process performance based on experimental data for the different workpiece characteristics. In this regard, an ultrasonic vibratory setup was designed to provide vibration oscillations at 28 kHz frequency and 8 µm amplitude in the cutting feed direction for the two characterised materials of 7075 aluminium alloy (150 BHN) and Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy (350 BHN) workpieces. A series of slotting experiments were conducted using both conventional milling (CM) and USVAM techniques. The axial cutting force and machined slot surface roughness were evaluated for each method. Subsequently, Support Vector Regression (SVR) and artificial neural network (ANN) models were built, tested and compared. AI-based models were developed to analyse the experimental results and predict the process performance for both workpieces. The experiments demonstrated a significant reduction in cutting force by up to 30% and an improvement in surface roughness by approximately four times when using USVAM compared to CM for both materials. Validated by the experimental findings, the ANN model accurately and better predicted the performance metrics with RMSE = 0.11 µm and 0.12 N for Al surface roughness and cutting force. Regarding Ti, surface roughness and cutting force were predicted with RMSE of 0.12 µm and 0.14 N, respectively. The results indicate that USVAM significantly enhances milling performance in terms of a reduced cutting force and improved surface roughness for both 7075 aluminium alloy and Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. The ANN model proved to be an effective tool for predicting the outcomes of the USVAM process, offering valuable insights for optimising milling operations across different materials. In an ultrasonic system, a piezoelectric transducer (PT) is a key component and contains a piezo element inside. In order to design and operate a system that uses a piezo element for its intended purpose, resonance analysis of the piezo element and an equivalent circuit analysis of the output stage of the ultrasonic system generator are required. Due to the characteristics of the equivalent circuit, a piezo element has multiple resonance points. Therefore, the system must be operated at the corresponding frequency by tracking the resonance frequency that suits the purpose of the system. In this study, the mechanical resonance frequency of the piezo element was analyzed and a method for operating the system at the corresponding frequency was studied. In order to operate a piezo element, a voltage-type inverter is used to apply a high-frequency AC (Alternating Current). Then, an L C filter is inserted into the output stage of the inverter, and the piezo element is finally located at the output stage of the L C filter. Therefore, when designing an L C filter, a design is required to optimize the performance of the piezo element. In this paper, we analyzed the resonance of a piezo element and the equivalent circuit of the generator output stage of an ultrasonic system for effective operation of an ultrasonic system. In addition, we proposed a method to estimate the characteristics of the entire mechanical resonance frequency range of a piezo element by using an LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) model suitable for analyzing the nonlinear characteristics of a piezo element. The study on estimating the mechanical resonance frequency of a piezo element using an LSTM model was verified through MATLAB 2021b simulation and ultrasonic system experiments. Ultrasonic treatment and optimal cultivation techniques are both conducive to the high yield of super rice in South China. Many previous studies have shown that the increase in intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (IPAR) and radiation use efficiency (RUE) is an important reason for high rice yield. Field experiments were conducted over two years to evaluate the effects of IPAR and RUE on the yield under different treatments (CK: conventional cultivation technique without ultrasonic treatment; T1: conventional cultivation technique with ultrasonic treatment; T2: super rice-specific cultivation technique without ultrasonic treatment and T3: super rice-specific cultivation technique with ultrasonic treatment), with two representative rice varieties, Wufengyou-615 (WFY) and Jingnongsimiao (JNSM) during the late seasons of rice cultivation in South China. The super rice-specific cultivation technique and the ultrasonic treatment could significantly increase the yield, which was significantly (p < 0.01) and positively correlated with panicle number, grain-filling rate, and aboveground total dry weight. The higher grain yield depended more highly on higher RUE in the mid-tillering stage and maturity stage. The results of multiple-regression models also showed that the contributions of IPAR and RUE to yield were significant (p < 0.01). Conclusively, IPAR and RUE contributed a lot to yield progress of super rice in both super rice-specific cultivation techniques with fewer times of topdressing and ultrasonic treatment in South China. This article presents a review on some important recent research, development, and innovations related to the nonconventional machining of glass material. Nonconventional machining processes were identified suitable for machining of glass, years ago, and from then to now various technological developments have made nonconventional machining a viable alternate to the conventional machining of glass material. In this article, we have mainly focused on three important nonconventional machining processes, namely, last cutting, ultrasonic machining, and electrochemical discharge machining (ECDM). Novel aspects, effects of process parameters, and salient features are discussed. Mainly, previous five years' work is reviewed. Constant-frequency ultrasonic treatment helped to improve seed germination. However, variable-frequency ultrasonic treatment on maize seed germination were rarely reported. In this study, maize seeds were exposed to 20–40 kHz ultrasonic for 40 s. The germination percentage and radicle length of maize seeds increased by 10.4% and 230.5%. Ultrasonic treatment also significantly increased the acid protease, α-amylase, and β-amylase contents by 96.4%, 73.8%, and 49.1%, respectively. Transcriptome analysis showed that 11,475 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found in the ultrasonic treatment and control groups, including 5,695 upregulated and 5,780 downregulated. Metabolic pathways and transcription factors (TFs) were significantly enriched among DEGs after ultrasonic treatment. This included metabolism and genetic information processing, that is, ribosome, proteasome, and pyruvate metabolism, sesquiterpenoid, triterpenoid, and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and oxidative phosphorylation, as well as transcription factors in the NAC, MYB, bHLH, WRKY, AP2, bZIP, and ARF families. Variable-frequency ultrasonic treatment increased auxin, gibberellin, and salicylic acid by 5.5%, 37.3%, and 28.9%, respectively. Abscisic acid significantly decreased by 33.2%. The related DEGs were upregulated and downregulated to varying degrees. Seed germination under the abiotic stress conditions of salt stress (NaCl solution), drought (PEG solution), and waterlogging (water-saturated sand bed) under ultrasonic treatment were promoted, radicle length was significantly increased by 30.2%, 30.5%, and 27.3%, respectively; and germination percentage by 14.8%, 20.1%, and 21.6%, respectively. In ultrasonic nondestructive testing (NDT), accurately estimating the time of flight (TOF) of ultrasonic waves is crucial. Traditionally, TOF estimation involves the signal processing of a single measured waveform. In recent years, deep learning has also been applied to estimate the TOF; however, these methods typically process only single waveforms. In contrast, this study acquired fan-beam ultrasonic waveform profile data from 64 paths using an ultrasonic-speed computed tomography (CT) simulation of a circular column and developed a TOF estimation model using two-dimensional convolutional neural networks (CNNs) based on these data. We compared the accuracy of the TOF estimation between the proposed method and two traditional signal processing methods. Additionally, we reconstructed ultrasonic-speed CT images using the estimated TOF and evaluated the generated CT images. The results showed that the proposed method could estimate the longitudinal TOF more accurately than traditional methods, and the evaluation scores for the reconstructed images were high. This study explores the extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) from high-ash run-of-mine and discard coal sourced from the Waterberg Coalfield. Three distinct methods were employed: (1) ultrasonic-assisted caustic digestion; (2) direct acid leaching; and (3) ultrasonic-assisted caustic-acid leaching. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was utilized to quantify REEs in both the coals and resultant leachates. Leaching the coals with 40% NaOH at 80 °C, along with 40 kHz sonication, yielded a total rare earth element (TREE) recovery of less than 2%. Notable enrichment of REEs was observed in the run-of-mine and discard coal by 17% and 19%, respectively. Upon employing 7.5% HCl, a recovery of less than 11.0% for TREE was achieved in both coal samples. However, leaching the caustic digested coal samples with 7.5% HCl significantly enhanced the TREE recovery to 88.8% and 80.0% for run-of-mine and discard coal, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis identified kaolinite and quartz as the predominant minerals. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive microanalysis revealed monazite and xenotime as the REE-bearing minerals within the coal samples. These minerals were found either liberated, attached to, or encapsulated by the clay-quartz matrices. Further mineralogical assessments highlighted the increased REE concentrations in coals post-caustic digestion and subsequent recovery during acid leaching. This increase was attributed to the partial dissolution of kaolinite encapsulating the RE-phosphates and the digestion of REE-bearing minerals. Notably, undissolved REE-bearing elements in the caustic-acid-leached coal indicated the necessity of harsh leaching conditions to augment REE recovery from these coal samples. Ultrasonic technology, which has been receiving increasing attention from the petroleum industry, has emerged as a promising environmentally-friendly technology due to its high adaptability, simple operation, low cost, and lack of pollution; the mechanisms of this technology are clarified herein. At the same time, this paper presents a comprehensive review of the impact of ultrasound on enhanced oil recovery (EOR) by removing plugs, reducing oil viscosity, and demulsifying crude oil, while highlighting the latest advancements in this field. Lastly, this paper delves into the challenges and prospects associated with the industrial implementation of power ultrasound. The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements, serving as a valuable reference for future investigations on ultrasound-assisted EOR. Oil field results demonstrate that oil production increased by 26.5% to 100%, water cut decreased by 5% to 96%, the success rate ranged from 75% to 90%, and the effect can last for a duration of 4 h to 12 months. Large amounts of agri-food waste are generated and discarded annually, but they have the potential to become highly profitable sources of value-added compounds. Many of these are lignin-rich residues. Lignin, one of the most abundant biopolymers in nature, offers numerous possibilities as a raw material or renewable resource for the production of chemical products. This study aims to explore the potential revalorization of agricultural by-products through the extraction of lignin and subsequent depolymerization. Different residues were studied; river cane, rice husks, broccoli stems, wheat straw, and olive stone are investigated (all local wastes that are typically incinerated). Traditional soda extraction, enhanced by ultrasound, is applied, comparing two different sonication methods. The extraction yields from different residues were as follows: river cane (28.21%), rice husks (24.27%), broccoli (6.48%), wheat straw (17.66%), and olive stones (24.29%). Once lignin is extracted, depolymerization is performed by three different methods: high-pressure reactor, ultrasound-assisted solvent depolymerization, and microwave solvolysis. As a result, a new microwave depolymerization method has been developed and patented, using for the first time graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) as new promising carbonaceous catalyst, achieving a 90.89% depolymerization rate of river cane lignin and yielding several building blocks, including guaiacol, vanillin, ferulic acid, or acetovanillone. This study presents a systematic review with meta-analysis to evaluate the success rates of endodontic retreatments in teeth where separated instruments are located within the roots. The search and selection of studies were conducted across two databases, SCOPUS and PubMed, as well as the Cochrane Library registry, yielding a total of 1620 records. Following the selection process, 11 studies were included in the systematic review. Overall, out of 1133 retreated teeth, there were 172 failures in instrument removal and 55 perforations. The meta-analysis results indicate that failures are more frequent when instruments are located in the apical third, with a failure rate of 21%, compared to an 8.8% failure rate in the middle/coronal third. The anatomy of the root canals, particularly the location of the separated instruments, significantly influences the success rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the removal efficiency of PRMTA and ECMPremixed applied to the coronal third according to the RET by UI and to examine the effect of different solutions on material removal. Materials and methods: 40 permanent upper central teeth were used to simulate immature teeth. The samples were irrigated with 1.5% NaOCl and calcium hydroxide was placed. Samples were incubated in PBS. Then irrigation was done with 17% EDTA, the samples were randomly divided into 2 groups (n = 20):Group 1: PRMTA, Group 2: ECM Premixed. The materials were placed in the samples. Then the samples were scanned with micro-CT. Materials were removed by UI. Micro-CT scan of the samples was performed. Each material group was divided into 2 subgroups (n = 10): Group1 was MTAD, group2 was irrigated with 10% CA; then micro-CT was performed. Obtained images were positioned in DataViewer and analyzed with CTAn. The obtained data were statistically analyzed in IBM SPSS 25. The significance level was determined as 5%. Results: There was no significant difference between the initial volumes of the materials (p > 0.05). The amount of the remaining material after UI was significantly higher in the PRMTA (0.7471%) group compared to the ECM Premixed (0.0093%). There was no significant difference in terms of remaining material after irrigation with MTAD and CA in both groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: A great deal of the materials were removed by UI under the operation microscope. ECM Premixed was removed more effectively compared to the PRMTA. Cryogenic and ultrasonic-assisted turning have both beneficial effects on the machinability of difficult-to-machine materials, such as titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. This research investigates the effect of combining both cryogenic and ultrasonic-assisted machining, to assess the effects on cutting temperature, forces and tool wear. The research utilizes FEM and CFD models to provide a better understanding of the interaction between the mechanisms at work during the machining process—namely the ultrasonic motion of the tool and the cryogenic impingement of the tool. The experimentation is then conducted to prove the effectiveness of combining both methods in reducing the cutting forces and reducing tool wear. The combined process is compared to conventional turning, cryogenic turning and ultrasonic-assisted turning. The CFD and FEM results showed a decrease in tool and chip temperature by 7.26% and 13.86%, respectively, when compared to UAT. The cutting forces in the combined turning show a reduction of 22% when compared to conventional turning. Tool wear is analyzed for the 4 cases. Tool wear caused by adhesion is shown to decrease in the new combined cutting method. In order to improve the functional properties of porcine heart protein and improve its application feasibility in the food industry, this study modified porcine heart protein (PHP) by ultrasonic (frequency of 20 kHz, power of 350 W, treatment for 8 min, working 5 s with 2 s intervals) combined with different concentrations of ethanol (0~80%). The changes of molecular structure, microstructure, active sulfhydryl content, surface hydrophobicity, solubility, emulsification, emulsion particle size and emulsion Zeta potential of modified PHP were determined. The results showed that the primary structure, secondary structure and microstructure of PHP were significantly changed under the combined action of ultrasonic and 40% ethanol modification. This study comparatively analyzed the effects of water bath (WB) and ultrasonic-assisted water bath (UWB) extraction at different pH conditions on the extraction kinetics, gelling properties, rheological properties, and structural properties of grass carp fish scale gelatin. Results indicated that the gel strength of fish scale gelatin extracted by UWB was greater than that obtained by WB at pH more than 7.0. The rheological results demonstrated that UWB elevated the apparent viscosity of fish scale gelatin, but decreased the gelling and melt points. The results of structural analysis indicated that UWB resulted in a reduction in the content of α-helix and β-sheet in fish scale gelatin. Furthermore, both pH and UWB were found to alter the tertiary structure of fish scale gelatin. This study may provide novel ideas for the high-value comprehensive utilization of fish scale waste.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Calophyllum inophyllum (C. inophyllum), or Nyamplung, seeds contain various active compounds. Using C. inophyllum seeds as a source of flavonoids for natural antioxidants can increase their economic value and provide alternative compounds for cosmetics, including lotions. This study applied maceration and ultrasonic methods using ethanol to extract the active compounds from the C. inophyllum seeds. The study optimised extracting the antioxidant components from C. inophyllum seeds using response surface methodology.METHODS: The experimental design used in this study was response surface methodology with a Box–Behnken design to model the influence of variables on the response of the yield and antioxidant activity of extracts obtained through maceration and ultrasonic extraction and to model lotion formulation. The extraction methods were designed with three variables (extraction time, solvent concentration, and sample–solvent ratio) and three levels (low, medium, and high), and the compounds in the extracts were analysed. Lotion formulation was designed with three variables (C. inophyllum seed extract, Tween 80, and carbomer) and three levels (low, medium, and high), and the quality of the lotion product (antioxidant activity and viscosity) was analysed.Results: The C. inophyllum seed extract obtained through maceration had stronger antioxidant activity than that obtained using the ultrasonic method, with 50 per cent inhibition concentration values of 13.154 and 16.343 part per million, respectively. Characterisation with gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy revealed ten compounds with major percentage values, among them 2''-(trimethylsilyl)oxy-3,4,4'',5- tetramethoxychalcone (49.70 per cent). This compound played an important role in enhancing antioxidant activity in C. inophyllum seeds extracted through maceration, whereas butylated hydroxytoluene (9.16 per cent) was important in the extract obtained using the ultrasonic method. The lotion produced from the C. inophyllum seed extract contained high antioxidant activity with a 50 per cent inhibition concentration of 4.621 part per million; the toxicity text showed it was safe to be used (50 per cent lethal concentration of 789 grams per millilitre).CONCLUSION: The results showed the effectiveness of this approach in determining the optimal conditions to maximise antioxidant content. The maceration method better ability enhanced the antioxidant activity capacity of C. inophyllum seeds compared to the ultrasonic method, as indicated by the response surface method. Both extraction methods produced the same secondary metabolite compounds with a promising reservoir of antioxidant compounds. In addition, the findings of this study showed the high antioxidant activity of C. inophyllum seed extract lotion, which could be developed for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and other applications.

Abstract This study explores the extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) from high-ash run-of-mine and discard coal sourced from the Waterberg Coalfield. Three distinct methods were employed: (1) ultrasonic-assisted caustic digestion; (2) direct acid leaching; and (3) ultrasonic-assisted caustic-acid leaching. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was utilized to quantify REEs in both the coals and resultant leachates. Leaching the coals with 40% NaOH at 80 °C, along with 40 kHz sonication, yielded a total rare earth element (TREE) recovery of less than 2%. Notable enrichment of REEs was observed in the run-of-mine and discard coal by 17% and 19%, respectively. Upon employing 7.5% HCl, a recovery of less than 11.0% for TREE was achieved in both coal samples. However, leaching the caustic digested coal samples with 7.5% HCl significantly enhanced the TREE recovery to 88.8% and 80.0% for run-of-mine and discard coal, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis identified kaolinite and quartz as the predominant minerals. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive microanalysis revealed monazite and xenotime as the REE-bearing minerals within the coal samples. These minerals were found either liberated, attached to, or encapsulated by the clay-quartz matrices. Further mineralogical assessments highlighted the increased REE concentrations in coals post-caustic digestion and subsequent recovery during acid leaching. This increase was attributed to the partial dissolution of kaolinite encapsulating the RE-phosphates and the digestion of REE-bearing minerals. Notably, undissolved REE-bearing elements in the caustic-acid-leached coal indicated the necessity of harsh leaching conditions to augment REE recovery from these coal samples.

Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the removal efficiency of PRMTA and ECMPremixed applied to the coronal third according to the RET by UI and to examine the effect of different solutions on material removal. Materials and methods 40 permanent upper central teeth were used to simulate immature teeth. The samples were irrigated with 1.5% NaOCl and calcium hydroxide was placed. Samples were incubated in PBS. Then irrigation was done with 17% EDTA, the samples were randomly divided into 2 groups (n = 20):Group 1: PRMTA, Group 2: ECM Premixed. The materials were placed in the samples. Then the samples were scanned with micro-CT. Materials were removed by UI. Micro-CT scan of the samples was performed. Each material group was divided into 2 subgroups (n = 10): Group1 was MTAD, group2 was irrigated with 10% CA; then micro-CT was performed. Obtained images were positioned in DataViewer and analyzed with CTAn. The obtained data were statistically analyzed in IBM SPSS 25. The significance level was determined as 5%. Results There was no significant difference between the initial volumes of the materials (p > 0.05). The amount of the remaining material after UI was significantly higher in the PRMTA (0.7471%) group compared to the ECM Premixed (0.0093%). There was no significant difference in terms of remaining material after irrigation with MTAD and CA in both groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion A great deal of the materials were removed by UI under the operation microscope. ECM Premixed was removed more effectively compared to the PRMTA. And, acidic solutions did not provide any additional benefit in material removal.

ObjectiveIctal vocalizations have shown diagnostic utility in epilepsy patients. Audio recordings of seizures have also been used for seizure detection. The present study aimed to determine whether generalized tonic-clonic seizures in the Scn1a+/- mouse model of Dravet syndrome are associated with either audible mouse squeaks or ultrasonic vocalizations.MethodsAcoustic recordings were captured from group-housed Scn1a+/- mice undergoing video-monitoring to quantify spontaneous seizure frequency. We generated audio clips (n = 129) during a generalized tonic-clonic seizure (GTCS) that included 30 seconds immediately prior to the GTCS (preictal) and 30 seconds following the conclusion of the seizure (postictal). Nonseizure clips (n = 129) were also exported from the acoustic recordings. A blinded reviewer manually reviewed the audio clips, and vocalizations were identified as either an audible (20 kHz).ResultsSpontaneous GTCS in Scn1a+/- mice were associated with a significantly higher number of total vocalizations. The number of audible mouse squeaks was significantly greater with GTCS activity. Nearly all (98%) the seizure clips contained ultrasonic vocalizations, whereas ultrasonic vocalizations were present in only 57% of nonseizure clips. The ultrasonic vocalizations emitted in the seizure clips were at a significantly higher frequency and were nearly twice as long in duration as those emitted in the nonseizure clips. Audible mouse squeaks were primarily emitted during the preictal phase. The greatest number of ultrasonic vocalizations was detected during the ictal phase.SignificanceOur study shows that ictal vocalizations are exhibited by Scn1a+/- mice. Quantitative audio analysis could be developed as a seizure detection tool for the Scn1a+/- mouse model of Dravet syndrome.

In this study, on the basis of single factor experiments, the effects of raw material mass concentration, ethanol volume fraction, ultrasonic power, extraction temperature, and extraction time on the lipase inhibition activity of mulberry leaves extract were investigated in combination with response surface methodology to optimize the ultrasonic-assisted extraction process of the lipase-inhibiting components of mulberry leaves. Meanwhile, the active ingredients of mulberry leaves extract were analyzed by UPLC-Q-TOF HRMS. The results showed that the optimal extraction process parameters for the lipase-inhibiting components of mulberry leaves were as follows: The mass concentration of raw material was 0.05 g/mL, volume fraction of ethanol was 70%, ultrasonic power was 195 W, extraction temperature was 31 ℃ and the extraction time was 40 min. Under these conditions, the lipase inhibition rate of mulberry leaves extract was 39.68%. A total of 1067 compounds were identified. Flavonoids and phenolic acids accounted for the highest proportion, containing 203 and 201 compounds, respectively. These compounds might be the material basis for the lipase inhibiting activity of mulberry leaves extract. In this study, the ultrasonic-assisted extraction process of mulberry leaves was optimized to improve the extraction efficiency of the lipase-inhibiting active components, and the main active ingredients were analyzed. The results may provide a reference for the functional application of mulberry leaves in improving lipid metabolism and the development of health food.

Purpose: To assess the root surface roughness and substance loss induced by chemical and chemomechanical challenges on root surfaces pretreated with ultrasonic instrumentation, a hand scaler, or erythritol airflow. Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty (120) bovine dentin specimens were used in this study. Specimens were divided into eight groups and treated as follows: groups 1 and 2: polished with 2000- and 4000-grit carborundum papers but not instrumented ('untreated'); groups 3 and 4: hand scaler; groups 5 and 6: ultrasonic instrumentation; groups 7 and 8: erythritol airflow. Samples from groups 1, 3, 5, and 7 then underwent a chemical challenge (5 x 2 min HCl [pH 2.7]), whereas samples from groups 2, 4, 6, and 8 were subjected to a chemomechanical challenge (5 x 2 min HCl [pH 2.7] + 2 min brushing). Surface roughness and substance loss were measured profilometrically. Results: The least substance loss through chemomechanical challenge was noted after erythritol airflow treatment (4.65 ± 0.93 μm), followed by ultrasonic instrumentation (7.30 ± 1.42 μm) and the hand scaler (8.30 ± 1.38 μm); the last two (hand scaler and ultrasonic tip) did not differ statistically significantly. The highest roughness after chemomechanical challenge was observed on ultrasonically treated specimens (1.25 ± 0.85 μm), followed by hand-scaled specimens (0.24 ± 0.16 μm) and those subject to erythritol airflow (0.18 ± 0.09 μm); there was no statistically signficant difference between the latter two, but they both differed statistically significantly from the ultrasonically treated specimens. No statistically significant difference in substance loss through the chemical challenge was observed between specimens pretreated by the hand scaler (0.75 ± 0.15 μm), ultrasonic tip (0.65 ± 0.15 μm), and erythritol airflow (0.75 ± 0.15 μm). The chemical challenge smoothed the surfaces treated with the hand scaler, ultrasonic tip, and erythritol airflow. Conclusion: Dentin pretreatment with erythritol powder airflow resulted in a higher resistance to chemomechanical challenge than did dentin treated ultrasonically or with the hand scaler. This study aimed to investigate the bactericidal effect and dynamics of slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW) combined with ultrasonic (US) treatment on Escherichia coli on fresh-cut lettuce. Fresh-cut lettuce was treated with SAEW-US under different conditions of solid/liquid ratio (1:5, 1:10 and 1:15 (g/mL)) and temperature (25, 35 and 45 ℃). The colony number of E. coli on lettuce was determined by the plate counting method, and the synergistic effect of combined treatment with SAEW and US on reducing the colony number of E. coli was determined and kinetically analyzed. The sublethal damage of SAEW-US treated E. coli was detected by flow cytometry and the double-layer culture counting method. The results showed that the efficacy of SAEW-US treatment in killing E. coli was significantly better than that of SAEW treatment (p < 0.05), and increased with treatment time, solid/liquid ratio and temperature. SAEW-US treatment had a synergistic effect on killing E. coli, and the sterilization process followed a first-order kinetic model. Moreover, SAEW-US treatment reduced the rate of sublethal damage of E. coli. The results of this study will provide a theoretical basis for the sterilization of fresh agricultural products.

Abstract Burning fossil fuels causes toxic gas emissions to increase, therefore, scientists are trying to find alternative green fuels. One of the important alternative fuels is biodiesel. However, using eco-friendly primary materials is a main factor. Sustainable catalysts should have high performance, good activity, easy separation from reaction cells, and regenerability. In this study, to solve the mentioned problem NaOH@Graphene oxide-Fe3O4 as a magnetic catalyst was used for the first time to generate biodiesel from waste cooking oil. The crystal structure, functional groups, surface area and morphology of catalyst were studied by XRD, FTIR, BET, and FESEM techniques. The response surface methodology based central composite design (RSM-CCD) was used for biodiesel production via ultrasonic technique. The maximum biodiesel yield was 95.88% in the following operation: 10.52:1 molar ratio of methanol to oil, a catalyst weight of 3.76 wt%, a voltage of 49.58 kHz, and a time of 33.29 min. The physiochemical characterization of biodiesel was based to ASTM standard. The magnetic catalyst was high standstill to free fatty acid due to the five cycle’s regeneration. The kinetic study results possess good agreement with first-order kinetics as well as the activation energy and Arrhenius constant are 49.2 kJ/min and 16.47 * 1010 min−1, respectively.

Abstract Purpose Various complications following hypospadias surgery present distinct manifestations when examined with ultrasound. Utilizing high-frequency ultrasound, clinicians can promptly identify these complications and initiate appropriate treatment. The aim of this study is to catalogue the ultrasonographic presentations of various postoperative complications following hypospadias surgery, thereby providing a reference for ultrasonographic diagnosis. Methods Ultrasonic images of post-hypospadias surgery from October 1, 2015, to June 30, 2023, recorded at the Plastic Surgery Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, serve as the basis for this investigation. Drawing on patient clinical diagnoses, this study compiles and selects representative ultrasound images of diverse complications. Results The study encompassed a total of 121 subjects; 26 demonstrated urethral stricture on ultrasonic images, two presented local urethral dilation, six showed intraurethral hair-like structures, 17 revealed intraurethral septum, two exhibited intraurethral fold, one had urethral calculus, one displayed urethral calcification, 12 indicated intraurethral urine accumulation, and two showed urethral diverticulum. Conclusion Ultrasound examination is helpful for postoperative diagnosis following hypospadias, detecting complications such as urethral stricture, urethral hair growth, and urethral diverticulum, which can help doctors choose appropriate clinical treatment strategies.

Palm mesocarp fiber, a by-product of the palm oil industry, holds significant potential as a cellulose source for biofuel, biopolymer, and biocomposite production. However, its utilization is hampered due to the presence of lignin, which covers the cellulose. The use of ozone promotes a high level of lignin degradation, making it efficient in breaking down lignin bonds in lignocellulose. However, the ozonation method has low ozone mass transfer. This deficiency can be overcome with ultrasonic waves because of the cavitation phenomenon that can expand the contact surface of ozone and lignocellulose. The ozonation-ultrasonic hybrid method is used to remove lignin. This research investigates the use of a hybrid ozonation-ultrasonic method with the effect of reaction time and pH under acidic conditions on the pretreatment of palm oil mesocarp fiber. This process was carried out at reaction times (70, 80, and 90 minutes) and solution pH (4, 5, and 6) with an ozone flow rate of 2 L min-1. The cellulose content was analyzed using the Chesson method. The results showed a decrease in lignin and an increase in cellulose, which was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis shows a decrease in the lignin absorption peak at 1635 cm-1 and 1420 cm-1. XRD analysis showed an increase in crystallinity after pretreatment, with lignin degradation observed at 6.35%. SEM Morphological showed a more friable, stable, and porous surface after pretreatment, indicating the presence of perforations in the cell walls and the damage to the lignin structure. Therefore, this research succeeded in reducing the use of chemicals in the biomass waste delignification process. The ozonation-ultrasonic hybrid pretreatment process, which aims to degrade lignin in palm fiber biomass, shows promising results, producing high cellulose content in palm fiber by reducing the amount of chemicals as mostly used in conventional processes.

Abstract This in vitro study compared various obturation techniques with bioceramic sealers for filling C-shaped 3D-printed replicas. A mandibular molar with a C-shaped root canal with a C1 configuration was obtained. After instrumenting with M3 Pro Gold files (United Dental, Shanghai, China) up to size #30/0.04, a CBCT scan of the tooth was taken. Sixty 3D-printed replicas of the tooth were created. The samples were obturated with EndoSeal TCS sealer (E. TCS; Maruchi, Wonju, Korea) or EndoSeal MTA (E. MTA; Maruchi, Wonju, Korea) (n = 30). The samples in each group were obturated with the following techniques (n = 10): (1) single-cone technique (SC), (2) SC with ultrasonic activation (UA), and (3) cold hydraulic compaction (CHC). Following incubation, the replicas’ apical, middle, and coronal thirds were inspected under a digital microscope, and the proportion of filling material and void were calculated. In this study, the effect of alginate and/or transglutaminase (TGase) in combination with ultrasonic treatment on the heat-induced gel quality, water-holding capacity (WHC) and myosin conformational changes of unwashed surimi was investigated. The results showed that the addition of trehalose (4.5%, m/m) and/or TGase (0.5%, m/m) together with ultrasonic treatment increased the gel strength by 35.11%−169.25%. Trehalose prevented protein unfolding while TGase had the opposite effect. However, ultrasonic treatment inhibited the catalytic activity of TGase, thereby reducing the gel strength to 4 737.23 g·mm, decreasing the relative content of free water to 19.52%, and alleviating excessive cross-linking of proteins. Furthermore, ultrasonic promoted protein unfolding even under the protection of trehalose. When added simultaneously, trehalose and TGase weakened their respective effects on protein structure.

In this study, a mixture of ultrasound or microwave pretreated walnut meal protein peptides and CaCl2 was used for the preparation of walnut peptide-calcium chelate. The effects of different pretreatments on the calcium chelating capacity, structural changes and stability of walnut meal protein peptides were analyzed. The results showed that compared with walnut meal protein peptide-calcium chelate (WPP-Ca), the chelation rates of ultrasound-pretreated walnut meal protein peptide-calcium chelate (UP-WPP-Ca) and microwave-pretreated walnut meal protein peptide-calcium chelate (MP-WPP-Ca) were enhanced, which indicated that ultrasound and microwave pretreatments improved the calcium-chelating capacity of the peptides effectively. Using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, it was found that ultrasound and microwave pretreatments mainly affected the calcium ion binding sites such as amino groups, carbonyl groups, carboxyl groups, amide bonds and carboxylate groups of walnut meal protein peptides. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that ultrasound and microwave treatments changed the molecular arrangement of walnut meal protein peptides, thereby making the structure of walnut peptide-calcium chelate more ordered. Fluorescence spectroscopy showed that ultrasonic and microwave treatments promoted the chelation between aromatic amino acids and calcium ions. In addition, UP-WPP-Ca and MP-WPP-Ca showed good stability toward different pH values, temperatures, and gastrointestinal digestion. In short, ultrasonic and microwave pretreatments can improve the calcium-chelating capacity and stability of walnut meal protein peptides, which is of guiding significance for the processing of walnut peptide-calcium chelate and the development of calcium supplements.

Freezing is an important method for food preservation, and some frozen foods still require separate thawing processes before consumption. Traditional thawing methods suffer from issues such as uneven temperature rise, long processing time, and significant loss of juices. As a new thawing technology, physical field thawing has received extensive research and attention in recent years. This paper reviews the research progress of physical field thawing in frozen food processing, and elaborates on the mechanisms and application effects of technologies such as ultrasound, dielectric, and electric fields in the thawing process. Compared to traditional thawing methods, physical field thawing better preserves the nutritional components of the ingredients, maintains sensory quality, reduces juice loss, and improves thawing efficiency. Different types of food materials and thawing methods may yield different effects, requiring analysis of the response characteristics and physicochemical parameters, such as dielectric constant, conductivity, and fat content, of actual ingredients to determine the optimal thawing conditions. Future research will focus on exploring efficient, stable, and low-energy physical field-assisted technologies, continuing in-depth studies on the impact on ingredient quality and thawing effects, to better meet consumers' demand for efficient processing of frozen foods.

The fat, protein and other compounds in konjac powder limit the application of konjac glucomannan. Konjac glucomannan with relatively high purity could be applied in food, medicine and other sectors. This research aimed to optimize the ultrasonic assisted purification process of glucomannan from konjac powder with ethanol. The significance effects of five relevant factors including the ratio of konjac powder to ethanol, ethanol concentration, ultrasonic time, power and temperature were analyzed based on single factor analysis of variance. The first three aforementioned factors were selected for further analysis their significant effects on the purity of glucomannan. Moreover, the relevant factors were optimized via response surface model fitting. The final optimized parameters were as follows: 1:102 (g/mL) for the ratio of konjac powder to ethanol, 73% ethanol, 55 min ultrasonic time, 175 W ultrasonic power, 50 ℃ ultrasonic temperature. The content of konjac glucomannan under the process condition was 88.1%, which was close to the predicted value, and the purification process of glucomannan from konjac powder was feasible. The structure of the samples before and after optimization were measured by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction with no significant difference. The content of konjac glucomannan in the purified konjac powder by this process was significantly higher than that in the unpurified one, and the structure was less affected. Results from this study could provide theoretical support for efficient utilization of konjac glucomannan and development of relevant functional products.

Orthotropic steel decks (OSDs) are commonly used in the construction of bridges due to their load-bearing capabilities. However, they are prone to fatigue damage over time due to the cyclic loads from vehicles. Therefore, the early structural health monitoring of fatigue damage in OSDs is crucial for ensuring bridge safety. Moreover, Lamb waves, as elastic waves propagating in OSD plate-like structures, are characterized by their long propagation distances and minimal attenuation. This paper introduces a method of emitting high-energy ultrasonic waves onto the OSD surface to capture the nonlinear Lamb waves formed, thereby calculating the nonlinear parameters. These parameters are then correlated with the fatigue damage endured, forming a damage index (DI) for monitoring the fatigue life of OSDs. Experimental results indicate that as fatigue damage increases, the nonlinear parameters exhibit a significant initial increase followed by a decrease. The behavior is distinct from the characteristic parameters of linear ultrasound (velocity and energy), which also exhibit changes but to a relatively smaller extent. The proposed DI and fatigue life based on nonlinear parameters can be fitted with a Gaussian curve, with the R-squared value of the fitting curve being close to 1. Additionally, this paper discusses the influence of rib welds within the OSDs on the DI, whereby as fatigue damage increases, it enlarges the value of the nonlinear parameters without altering their trend. Here the advantages of employing a biorefinery approach in conjunction with optimization techniques were utilized to attain high overall process efficiency. Initially, an alkaline pH-shift process assisted by ultrasonic and its subsequent optimization were employed to maximize the extraction yield and whiteness index of muscle proteins isolated from lanternfish (B. pterotum). The optimal strategy was determined as follows: 6 mL g-1, pH1 (solubilization) 11.5, 310 W, and pH2 (precipitation) 5.8 with desirability of 0.84.Collagen hydrolysate was obtained from the connective tissue-containing sediment residue emerging during pH-shift process. The optimal isolated protein (OIP) was utilized to produce heat-set gels in combination with collagen hydrolysate. Breaking force and deformation of the OIP gel were measured at 123 (g) and 10.12 (mm) respectively. Collagen hydrolysate made breaking force (up to 2% w/w) and deformation (up to 10% w/w) improved and had positive effects on color characteristics (especially whiteness index) as well as water holding capacity. Moringa oleifera has been a focus of interest because of the different properties (anticancer, antioxidant, etc.) that have been attributed to this plant. However, the most used methodology is soxhlet, which requires long periods of reaction (18 hours), generating greater energy expenditure. Recently, green extraction technologies have been developed like ultrasound and microwaves, reducing reaction time by up to 97%. The objectives of this study were to extract and identify the polyphenolic compounds present in aqueous and hydro-alcoholic extracts from Moringa oleifera dried leaves using ultrasound and microwave, as well as to evaluate their in vitro cytotoxic effect using cancer and non-cancer cells. A combination of ultrasound and microwave was utilized to extract polyphenolic compounds from Moringa dried leaves. HPLC–MS analysis was conducted to qualitatively identify the polyphenols in the samples. The cytotoxic effect was evaluated by MTT and comet assays using non-cancer (3T3, Hek293, and Vero) and cancer (HepG2) cells lines. Results: 30 polyphenolic compounds from 9 different families were identified by HPLC. Data suggested that hydro-alcoholic extracts from Moringa leaves have potent cytotoxic activities in a depend-doses response. Also, compounds from aqueous extracts did not cause cell death, while polyphenol extract from hydro-alcoholic extracts decreased populations in both cancer and non-cancer cell lines measurement by MTT. HepG2 cells showed DNA damage by comet assay. The extraction using ultrasound and microwaves at 30 minutes of reaction has an antiproliferative effect through apoptosis in cancer cells, in addition ethanolic extracts have higher cytotoxicity compared to aqueous extracts. Context: An unfavorable event that can hinder endodontic treatment and affect the outcome of root canal treatment is the separation of endodontic instruments. Endodontic instrument separation can occur due to clinical or metallurgical factors. Friction between the ultrasonic tip and the remaining dentin generates heat, which is subsequently transferred to the external root surface. Elevated temperatures exceeding 10°C above body temperature for more than a minute may result in injury to periodontal or bone tissue. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare temperature rise on the external root surface of teeth during retrieval of broken NiTi instrument using two different ultrasonic tips and two power settings. Materials and Methods: In each group, a sample size of 8 was sufficient to attain a statistical power exceeding 90%, enabling the detection of a minimum mean difference of 0.9204 (delta) through a one-way ANOVA test at a 95% confidence level (alpha 0.05). After access opening and working length determination, samples were randomly distributed into two groups - Group 1 (A and B) - ProUltra tip at high and low power settings and Group 2 (A and B) - Cric Dental IR3 at high and low power settings. The temperature rise was measured using K-type thermocouple thermometer. The comparisons were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test with pairwise comparisons using the Dunn's test. Results: Group 1A and Group 1B resulted in lower heat generation compared to Group 2A and 2B and its difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Minimum temperature rise is seen in the ProUltra group at lower power settings (Group 1A) at the apical level and maximum temperature rise is seen in the Cric Dental IR3 group at higher power settings (Group 2B) at the middle third level. Conclusion: It was found that there is a significant temperature rise seen when ultrasonic tips are used for the retrieval of separated files, especially at higher power settings. The ProUltra tip demonstrated the lowest temperature rise at lower power settings, particularly at the apical level, whereas the IR3 Cric Dental tip exhibited the highest temperature rise, notably at higher power settings and the middle third level. This study investigates the application of Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) for crack depth estimation in cylindrical structures, focusing on two approaches: reference measurement and dual measurement. It addresses the challenge of applying UPV to curved surfaces, a scenario less studied than that of flat surfaces. The paper details the modification of UPV methodologies to account for curvature, presenting analytic solutions and numerical validations for both approaches. The findings reveal that curvature-adjusted equations yield accurate crack depth estimations, enhancing the reliability of UPV in diverse structural contexts. Ultrasonic treatment has been widely used in the mineral flotation process due to its advantages in terms of operational simplicity, no secondary pollutant formation, and safety. Currently, many studies have reported the effect of ultrasonic treatment on mineral flotation and shown excellent flotation performance. In this review, the ultrasonic mechanisms are classified into three types: the transient cavitation effect, stable cavitation effect, and acoustic radiation force effect. The effect of the main ultrasonic parameters, including ultrasonic power and ultrasonic frequency, on mineral flotation are discussed. This review highlights the uses of the application of ultrasonic treatment in minerals (such as the cleaning effect, ultrasonic corrosion, and desulfuration), flotation agents (such as dispersion and emulsification and change in properties and microstructure of pharmaceutical solution), and slurry (such formation of microbubbles and coalescence). Additionally, this review discusses the challenges and prospects of using ultrasonic approaches for mineral flotation. The findings demonstrate that the application of the ultrasonic effect yields diverse impacts on flotation, thereby enabling the regulation of flotation behavior through various treatment methods to enhance flotation indices and achieve the desired objectives. This paper presents the development and validation of a cost-efficient and uncomplicated real-time localization system (RTLS) for use in mobile robotics, specifically within indoor and storage environments. By harnessing ultrasonic waves to measure distances from three beacons, the system provides stable and reliable localization. This method utilizes the time-of-flight (TOF) principle, allowing for accurate distance calculations with simple microcontrollers. The system is designed to update the robot's position at a frequency of at least 10 times per second, ensuring smooth navigation. Our trilateration-based approach allows for the precise determination of the robot's position with a notable standard deviation accuracy of up to 15 mm. The aim was to design a simple yet sufficiently accurate system and verify its precision through experimental measurements. The experimental results demonstrate the system's efficacy and lay a solid foundation for advancing this technology. This paper presents a novel ultrasonic-assisted electrodeposition process of Mn-doped NiCo2O4 onto a commercial nickel foam in a neutral electroplating bath (pH = 7.0) under an ultrasonic power of 1.2 V and 100 W. Different sample properties were studied based on their crystallinity through X-ray diffraction (XRD), morphology was studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photodegradation was studied through ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometry. Based on the XRD results, the dominant crystallite phase obtained was shown to be a pure single NiCo2O4 phase. The optical properties of the photocatalytic film showed a range of energy band gaps between 1.72 and 1.73 eV from the absorption spectrum. The surface hydroxyl groups on the catalytic surface of the Mn-doped NiCo2O4 thin films showed significant improvements in removing methyl red via photodegradation, achieving 88% degradation in 60 min, which was approximately 1.6 times higher than that of pure NiCo2O4 thin films. The maximum hydrogen rate of the composite films under 100 mW/cm2 illumination was 38 μmol/cm2 with a +3.5 V external potential. The electrochemical performance test also showed a high capacity retention rate (96% after 5000 charge–discharge cycles), high capacity (260 Fg−1), and low intrinsic resistance (0.8 Ω). This work concludes that the Mn-doped NiCo2O4 hybrid with oxygen-poor conditions (oxygen vacancies) is a promising composite electrode candidate for methyl red removal, hydrogen evolution, and high-performance hybrid supercapacitor applications. Continuous monitoring of structural health is essential for the timely detection of damage and avoidance of structural failure. Guided-wave ultrasonic testing (GWUT) assesses structural damages by correlating its sensitive features with the damage parameter of interest. However, few or no studies have been performed on the detection and influence of debris-filled damage on GWUT under environmental conditions. This paper used the pitch–catch technique of GWUT, signal cross-correlation, statistical root mean square (RMS) and root mean square deviation (RMSD) to study the combined influence of varying debris-filled damage percentages and temperatures on damage detection. Through experimental result analysis, a predictive model with an R2 of about 78% and RMSE values of about 7.5 × 10 − 5 was established.
