The study of American nationalism is a tricky adventure, first because of its deep-seated inconsistency as a self-reliant ideology, and second, because of dispersed and random absorptions of its designations by various and often competing factions and policies. In the first case, it has been said that nationalism could stand as a clarifying description of other self-contained ideologies (e.g., national liberalism); on the other hand, due to its pervasively undetermined ideological contours, any investigation of nationalism results in irresolute paradoxes and baffling contradictions. Still, despite such hindrance, the ideological framing of nationalism might be achieved considering certain valuable traits which hint at its commonsensical profile. In keeping with historical, political and cultural development of nationalism in the United States, one could grasp its certain specific marks as an ideology in the concepts of identity and character, American Creed, Manifest Destiny, assimilationism, American System, messianism. The present study modestly attempts to cope with all the aforementioned traits of American nationalism in order to configure its plausible ideography. Este articulo analiza el archivo oral y de artefactos formado por una familia obrera afro-cubana para crear unas historias intimas que demuestran tanto los limites como el poder de las fronteras nacionales en las Americas. El articulo explora como las identidades nacionales se crean en los espacios privados de la vida de los inmigrantes a traves de la narracion de memorias colectivas y tambien como el genero funciona en estos espacios sociales y discursivos. Esta familia ha creado una narrativa dominante sobre su propia identidad respetable obrera y racial que niega la importancia del matrimonio y las experiencias internacionales. Las memorias susurradas de mujeres, marginalizadas de la narrativa principal familiar, exponen motivaciones y significados alternativos de las estrategias que impulsaron a su familia al centro de los grandes conflictos historicos de Cuba. This article focuses on the oral and artifact-filled archive of a working-class Afro-Cuban family to create an intimate set of histories that illuminates the Americas as deeply connected and challenges the limits of national borders. The article explores the ways in which national identities assert themselves in the 'private spaces' of migratory life through storytelling and the creation of collective memories, and how gender functions within these spaces. This family has created a master narrative about its own racially conscious, respectable, revolutionary Cuban working-class identity and practice that denies the centrality of international marriage and diasporic experiences to its making. Women's whispered stories, marginalized from the familial narrative, illuminate alternative meanings and motivations for the strategies that propelled their family into the center of the great conflicts of Cuban history., This essay reconstructs the historical recollections and experiences of the Sandoval family, who describe themselves as 'respectable' Cuban artisans. Baseando-se numa combinacao das pesquisas do proprio autor com trabalhos recentes de temas variados, o presente artigo trata do dialogo crescente entre Estudos Latinoamericanos e Estudos de Ciencia e Tecnologia (STS). O artigo aborda semelhancas e diferencas centrais nas questoes, metodos e estruturas teoricas que ate entao tem guiado investigacoes nos campos de Estudos Latinoamericanos e STS. Ele foca particularmente nas diferentes formas que os dois ambitos interdisciplinares de pesquisa tratam objetos e materialidade. O autor argumenta que apesar das diferentes orientacoes dessas duas areas, o foco em objetos e as suas materialidades, baseado nas perspectivas do STS, permite uma ampliacao do arquivo disponivel aos que investigam a America Latina colonial, desafia e expande o pensamento critico desse campo e incentiva novos questionamentos sobre o uso de conceitos espaciais convencionais da America Latina e do Atlantico que vem sendo utilizados por pesquisadores do tema. Drawing from a combination of the author's own research on Portugal's empire and recent work across a range of disciplines, this essay discusses the growing dialogue between Latin American studies and science and technology studies (STS). It discusses key similarities and differences in the questions, methods, and theoretical frameworks which have guided research in both areas. It focuses particular attention on the divergent ways in which the two interdisciplinary arenas of scholarship have handled objects and materiality. The U.S. Army's Quartermaster Corps erected temporary rest houses for the Gold Star Mothers and Widows Pilgrimages at the military cemeteries of the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) in France between 1930 and 1933. The army intended the architecture of the rest houses to be familiar to the pilgrims and to provide them with a female place of comfort and respite. The decision to create the rest houses demonstrated the government's desire to include women in the commemoration of World War I, yet its choice to demolish them at the end of the pilgrimage program indicates the constrained role of women in that process. By virtue of their appearance and short life, the rest houses' style, form, and temporary nature reveal the limitations on women's participation in commemoration and military culture during the interwar period. The rest houses separated the pilgrims into their own female space, carefully crafted and controlled by male military leaders. Their destruction erased the story of the female pilgrims from the visible commemorative narrative at the cemeteries. In many elite Southern homes, punkahs, ceiling-mounted fans manipulated by enslaved workers, were an integral part of the architecture of the dining room in the antebellum United States. Paralleling their relationship to American slavery was their use in British India, where the fans had a long history of being powered by low-caste workers. Pushing past the fans' decorative and utilitarian qualities, this essay examines the devices' shifting relationship to slavery and freedom through an examination of their operation within the spaces of elite homes. Both planters and their workers benefited, albeit differently, from their interactions with the fans. Elite planters enjoyed the fans' cooling breezes, insect-free mealtimes, and the opportunity to display their wealth and refinement. Even though they were consigned to labor at the fans, enslaved workers likely used their proximity to elite whites to learn 'genteel' codes of behavior, while gleaning information about the plantation world and beyond. The end of slavery did not mark the end of punkahs; rather, the fans were used to celebrate the 'noble' history of the Old South while eliding any reference of slavery., In the dining rooms of antebellum Southern homes, slaves manually powered large fans--variously known as punkahs, shoo-flies, or great fans--to cool diners and keep insects away from the dining table.
