Aluminum, due to its high abundance, very attractive theoretical capacity, low cost, low (de−) lithiation potential, light weight, and effective suppression of dendrite growth, is considered as a promising anode candidate for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). However, its practical application is hindered due to multiple detrimental challenges, including the formation of an amorphous surface oxide layer, pulverization, and insufficient lithium diffusion kinetics in the α‐phase. These outstanding intrinsic challenges need to be addressed to facilitate the commercial production of Al‐based batteries. The native passivation layer, Al2O3, plays a critical role in the nucleation and reversibility of lithiating aluminum and is thoroughly investigated in this study using high precision electrochemical micro calorimetry. The enthalpy of crystallization of β‐LiAl is found to be 40.5 kJ mol−1, which is in a strong agreement with the value obtained by calculation using Nernst equation (40.04 kJ mol−1). Surface treatment of the active material by the addition of 25 nm of alumina increases the nucleation energy barrier by 83 % over the native oxide layer. After the initial nucleation, the added alumina does not negatively impact the reversibility at 0.1 C rate, suggesting the removal of alumina is not necessary for improving the cyclability of aluminum anode based lithium‐ion batteries. Moreover, the coulombic efficiencies are also found to be slightly higher in the alumina treated samples compared to the untreated ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Layered ternary Ti2SnC carbides have attracted significant attention because of their advantage as a M2AX phase to bridge the gap between properties of metals and ceramics. In this study, Ti2SnC materials were synthesized by two different methods—an unconventional low-energy ion facility (LEIF) based on Ar+ ion beam sputtering of the Ti, Sn, and C targets and sintering of a compressed mixture consisting of Ti, Sn, and C elemental powders up to 1250 °C. The Ti2SnC nanocrystalline thin films obtained by LEIF were irradiated by Ar+ ions with an energy of 30 keV to the fluence of 1.1015 cm−2 in order to examine their irradiation-induced resistivity. Quantitative structural analysis obtained by Cs-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) confirmed transition from ternary Ti2SnC to binary Ti0.98C carbide due to irradiation-induced β-Sn surface segregation. The nanoindentation of Ti2SnC thin nanocrystalline films and Ti2SnC polycrystalline powders shows that irradiation did not affect significantly their mechanical properties when concerning their hardness (H) and Young's modulus (E). We highlighted the importance of the HAADF-STEM techniques to track atomic pathways clarifying the behavior of Sn atoms at the proximity of irradiation-induced nanoscale defects in Ti2SnC thin films. Chemiresistors based on thin films of the Li-doped CuO–TiO2 heterojunctions were synthesized by a 2-step method: (i) repeated ion beam sputtering of the building elements (on the Si substrates and multisensor platforms); and (ii) thermal annealing in flowing air. The structure and composition of the films were analyzed by several methods: Rutherford Backscattering (RBS), Neutron Depth Profiling (NDP), Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and their sensitivity to gaseous analytes was evaluated using a specific lab-made device operating in a continuous gas flow mode. The obtained results showed that the Li doping significantly increased the sensitivity of the sensors to oxidizing gases, such as NO2, O3, and Cl2, but not to reducing H2. The sensing response of the CuO–TiO2–Li chemiresistors improved with increasing Li content. For the best sensors with about 15% Li atoms, the detection limits were as follows: NO2 → 0.5 ppm, O3 → 10 ppb, and Cl2 → 0.1 ppm. The Li-doped sensors showed excellent sensing performance at a lower operating temperature (200 °C); however, even though their response time was only a few minutes, their recovery was slow (up to a few hours) and incomplete.
