Abstract

A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10~TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. 2. Profiles of Online Students and the Impact of Their University Experience

Abstract

In recent decades, there has been a steady growth in the population who enter higher education in both brick-and-mortar and, in particular, online universities. This has led to an increase in heterogeneous student profiles in a relatively short period of time. The purpose of this paper was to explore the student profiles at a university that gives all its courses online, namely the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), and analyse students' perceptions of their university experience. With this goal in mind, we constructed a student typology based on their social conditions and backgrounds using multiple correspondence analysis. Subsequently, an analysis of variance (Kruskall-Wallis test) was run to detect whether there were any differences in students' perceptions of the impact of their university experience (N = 1850). Although the prevailing profile of students in the online university continues to reflect students with responsibilities outside of the university (e.g., work and/or family), new profiles have been observed, made up of younger students without any work or family responsibilities. In turn, younger students' distinct perceptions of their university experience has been observed, depending on student profiles, with older students having more intrinsic perceptions, focused on learning and the acquisition of theoretical knowledge.

4. Safe and Inclusive Educational Apps: Digital Protection from an Ethical and Critical Perspective

Abstract

The mediated use of technology fosters learning from early childhood and is a potential resource for inclusive education. Nevertheless, the huge range of options and exposure to interactive digital content, which is often online, also implies a series of risks. The definition of protection underlying the current strategies to protect children is inadequate as it only extends to reducing children's exposure to harmful content. This study proposes the expansion of this definition. Through systematic observation of 200 apps within the Catalan sphere for children under 8 years of age and principal component analysis, the results support a multidimensional conceptualisation of protection which, instead of being restricted to the potential risks, also considers aspects related to the educational and inclusive potential of digital resources. Five factors are suggested in order to select these resources and contribute to the digital competence of teachers and students. The first factor concerns the use of protection mechanisms and the existence of external interference, the second factor indicates the presence of adaptation tools; the exposure to stereotypes corresponds to the third factor and the last two consider the previous knowledge required and the verbal component of the apps. Finally, the scope of the suggested definition and its limitations as a guide for future analysis will be discussed.

7. Analytical Evaluation of Dipole Performance Limits for a Muon Collider

Abstract

Following the recommendation of the Updated European Strategy for Particle Physics, an International Muon Collider Collaboration has been formed and is currently studying the feasibility of a 10 TeV center-of-mass energy muon collider facility. Several technical challenges must be faced, mainly due to the limited muon lifetime at rest, 2.2 $\mu$s. This extreme condition requires the use of ambitious magnets, RF systems, targets, shielding, and cooling. To avoid collimated neutrino beams from muon decay and remain below the natural radiation background that affects the area surrounding the facility, the straight lengths in the collider ring should be kept to an absolute minimum. To achieve this goal, the beam optics quadrupoles should be combined with the bending dipoles, featuring a high magnetic field ($>$10 T) and gradient ($>$100 T/m) in a large aperture ($\sim$150 mm). The need for a high field derives from the compactness requirement to achieve high luminosity via high crossing frequency. The large aperture is fundamental to allocate a radiation (W) beam screen, which will protect the superconductors from the muon decay products (a radiation heat load of 500 W/m due to electrons, positrons, and their synchrotron photons). All these constraints require cutting-edge technologies for the material choices, the mechanical layout, the quench protection, and the cooling. In this contribution, we show the performance limits of the possible candidate materials for such magnets (namely the LTS NbTi, Nb$_{3}$Sn, and the HTS ReBCO). The analysis is focused on dipoles, obtaining a relationship between maximum aperture and bore field determined by constraints including cost, critical current density, mechanical stress, and quench protection.

Abstract

A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

Abstract

The mediated use of technology fosters learning from early childhood and is a potential resource for inclusive education. Nevertheless, the huge range of options and exposure to interactive digital content, which is often online, also implies a series of risks. The definition of protection underlying the current strategies to protect children is inadequate as it only extends to reducing children's exposure to harmful content. This study proposes the expansion of this definition. Through systematic observation of 200 apps within the Catalan sphere for children under 8 years of age and principal component analysis, the results support a multidimensional conceptualisation of protection which, instead of being restricted to the potential risks, also considers aspects related to the educational and inclusive potential of digital resources. Five factors are suggested in order to select these resources and contribute to the digital competence of teachers and students. The first factor concerns the use of protection mechanisms and the existence of external interference, the second factor indicates the presence of adaptation tools; the exposure to stereotypes corresponds to the third factor and the last two consider the previous knowledge required and the verbal component of the apps. Finally, the scope of the suggested definition and its limitations as a guide for future analysis will be discussed.

This article explores the contributions of the Milan branch of CNR-ISPC to the Humanities and Cultural Heritage Italian Open Science Cloud (H2IOSC) Project, focusing on facilitating data integration within Heritage Science. Its primary objective is to ensure seamless interoperability between resources from multiple institutions by establishing a shared semantic framework. The multidisciplinary nature of Heritage Science underscores the necessity for shared data repositories and effective management tools. Recent literature highlights the importance of semantic technologies in improving data integration and interoperability. To this end, the H-SeTIS database is currently under development. H-SeTIS will function as a hub for the systematic surveying and description of various semantic tools relevant to the Heritage domain. Interestingly, a preliminary analysis of data within H-SeTIS reveals that many semantic resources specifically designed to address the unique requirements of the Heritage domain do not meet the minimum quality requirements of accessibility and reusability. This finding underscores a potential area for future development: the creation of H-SeTIS aims to support the ongoing development of a comprehensive ontology for Cultural Heritage, enhancing data FAIRness and the discipline's overall impact. Abstract

The paper presents the results of a two-year archaeological survey carried out in the Iraqi Kurdistan, namely within the Navkur plain that has been extensively explored by the University of Udine since 2012. The surveys were planned in advance using Remote Sensing products available online and processed with Google Earth Engine, a large-scale cloud computing service specifically designed to process geospatial big data and especially satellite imagery. Images from Landsat 5, Landsat 7 and Sentinel-2 platforms were selected, processed and assessed. After two years, an overall number of 46 new and previously unknown sites have been localized and surveyed, contributing to the knowledge of the past history of this portion of the Kurdistan region and testing the use of Remote Sensing cloud-computing applications in the context of Near Eastern archaeological research. Abstract

The Future Circular Collider in hadron-hadron configuration (FCC-hh) is one of the main options for the post-LHC era of particle accelerator. The project led by CERN aims to build a 100 km-long collider with 100 TeV of center-of-mass energy, using bending dipoles able to achieve a bore field $>$14 T. The Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) and CERN are collaborating to construct a Nb$_{3}$Sn cos-theta dipole model, to increase the R&D efforts for high-field superconducting magnets technology, according to the updated European Strategy for Particle Physics. Here we give an update on the intense design activity, and we report the results of the first winding trials performed with a dummy conductor, to experimentally validate the magnet design and start the iterative process to optimize the manufacturing method. The results of the first winding tests are shown in the paper, focusing on the impact of the coiling procedure on the mechanical behavior of the unreacted Nb$_{3}$Sn Rutherford cable.

Abstract

There is a certain agreement in the regional economics literature on tourism development as a lever of territorial cohesion and regional convergence. Yet, evidence about its impact on social inclusion within destination regions is scant. The emerging literature placing tourism development as a driver of inequality relies mostly on qualitative methods and individual case studies, thus overlooking a cross-national perspective. In this article, we address this gap by estimating the impacts of tourism growth between 2013 and 2018 on housing instability through its effects on rents and the perceived financial burden of housing costs. Based on a combination of data sourced from Eurostat and a geo-located dataset of Airbnb listings, a Bayesian path analysis model was specified with a sample of densely populated areas in 85 European regions. Results reveal the controversial influence of tourism on urban destinations, indicating how the increase in the number of visitors may benefit mean incomes and relieve the pressure on housing costs, while at the same time, driving a higher dispersion of income and residential displacement. A clear difference is established between homeowners and tenants to this regard: the former can use the opportunities of rent extraction in the platform economy to withstand the economic pressure of tourism, while the latter are more exposed to the risk of having to leave their homes.

Abstract

The yearly energy requirements of normal conducting (NC) and superconducting (SC) magnet options of a new hadron therapy (HT) facility are compared. Special reference is made to the layouts considered for the proposed SEEIIST facility. Benchmarking with the NC CNAO HT centre in Pavia (Italy) was carried out. The energy comparison is centred on the different synchrotron solutions, assuming the same injector and lines in the designs. The beam current is more than a factor 10 higher with respect to present generation facilities. This allows efficient ’multi-energy extraction’ (MEE), which shortens the therapy treatment and is needed especially in the SC option, because of the slow magnet ramping time. Hence, power values of the facility in the traditional mode were converted into MEE ones, for the sake of a fair stepwise comparison between NC and SC magnets. The use of cryocoolers and a liquefier are also compared, for synchrotron refrigeration. El uso mediado de la tecnología fomenta el aprendizaje desde la infancia y representa un potencial recurso para la educación inclusiva. Al mismo tiempo, la creciente exposición a contenidos digitales interactivos, a menudo conectados a la red, conlleva una serie de riesgos para los niños. A las estrategias actualmente empleadas para protegerlos, que se limitan a reducir su exposición a contenidos perjudiciales, parece subyacer una definición de protección inadecuada. Esta investigación propone que se amplíe esta definición. A través de una observación sistemática de 200 apps para menores de ocho años en el ámbito catalán y un análisis de componentes principales, se propone una definición multidimensional de protección que no se limita a detallar los riesgos potenciales, sino que también considera aspectos relacionados con el potencial educativo e inclusivo de los recursos digitales. Se sugieren cinco factores a considerar para seleccionar estos recursos y contribuir a la competencia digital de docentes y alumnos. El primer factor concierne al uso de mecanismos de protección y la existencia de interferencias externas; el segundo factor indica la presencia de herramientas de adaptación; la exposición a estereotipos corresponde al tercer factor y los últimos dos consideran los conocimientos previos requeridos y el componente verbal de las apps. Abstract

In the context of the Future Circular Collider hadron-hadron (FCC-hh) R program, the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), in collaboration with CERN, is responsible for designing and constructing the Falcon Dipole (Future Accelerator post-LHC Costheta Optimized Nb₃Sn Dipole), which is an important step towards the construction of High Field Nb₃Sn magnets for a post LHC collider. The magnet is a short model with one aperture of 50 mm and the target bore field is 12 T (14 T ’ultimate’ field). The dipole is pre-loaded with the Bladder technique to minimize the stress on the coils at room temperature, which are prone to degradation because of the Nb₃Sn cable strain-sensitivity. The electro-mechanical 2D design is focused on the performance, the field quality and the quench protection, with emphasis to the stresses on the the conductor. The current political situation in Brazil is characterized by a profound contrast between the propensity for authoritarianism and the desire for a more just and democratic society. This research examines the possible causes of this polarization by testing a model of structural equations. It has been hypothesized that participation in public life depends on the citizenry's reaction to the public and private insecurities (criminality, fear of crime and corruption) that affect Brazilian society. The results indicate that trust in institutions and the capacity for cognitive mobilization are two factors that shape the relationship between insecurities and two irreconcilable visions of political participation: one passive-aggressive and the other proactive and involving protest., RESUMO A atualidade política no Brasil é caracterizada por uma profunda contraposição entre propensão ao autoritarismo e anseio por uma sociedade mais justa e democrática. Esta pesquisa analisa as possíveis causas dessa polarização e coloca à prova um modelo de equações estruturais. Abstract

[EN] The open data paradigm is changing the research approach in many fields such as remote sensing and the social sciences. This is supported by governmental decisions and policies that are boosting the open data wave, and in this context archaeology is also affected by this new trend. In many countries, archaeological data are still protected or only limited access is allowed. However, the strong political and economic support for the publication of government data as open data will change the accessibility and disciplinary expertise in the archaeological field too. In order to maximize the impact of data, their technical openness is of primary importance. Indeed, since a spreadsheet is more usable than a PDF of a table, the availability of digital archaeological data, which is structured using standardised approaches, is of primary importance for the real usability of published data. In this context, the main aim of this paper is to present a workflow for archaeological data sharing as open data with a large level of technical usability and interoperability. Primary data is mainly acquired through the use of digital techniques (e.g. digital cameras and terrestrial laser scanning). The processing of this raw data is performed with commercial software for scan registration and image processing, allowing for a simple and semi-automated workflow. Outputs obtained from this step are then processed in modelling and drawing environments to generate digital models, both 2D and 3D. De hecho, dado que una hoja de cálculo es más útil que la digitalización PDF de una tabla, de manera similar, la disponibilidad de los datos arqueológicos digitales y su estructuración mediante enfoques estandarizados es de importancia primordial para una utilización real de los datos publicados. En este contexto, el objetivo principal de este documento es presentar un flujo de trabajo para compartir datos arqueológicos como datos abiertos con un gran nivel de usabilidad técnica e interoperabilidad. La adquisición de datos primarios se realiza principalmente mediante el uso de técnicas de adquisición digital (por ejemplo, cámaras digitales y escaneado láser terrestre). El procesamiento de los datos crudos se realiza con software comercial para el registro de los escaneados y el procesamiento de imágenes que permite un procesamiento simple y semiautomático. Abstract

La pieve dei SS. Cornelio e Cipriano a Borgoratto Mormorolo è stata oggetto di due campagne di scavo archeologico negli anni 2006 e 2016, condotte dall’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in accordo con la Soprintendenza Archeologica della Lombardia. Queste hanno interessato principalmente l’area del presbiterio, dove è stato possibile mettere in luce depositi stratigrafici che coprono un ampio arco temporale. È stata documentata una prima chiesa o cappella in elementi lapidei - di cui si conservano l’abside e il piano pavimentale interno - eretta attorno all’anno 1000 e connotata da un’area cimiteriale esterna; a questa prima fase ne seguono numerose altre che modificano l’assetto dell’area presbiteriale. Da inquadrare nell’ambito del XV secolo è la costruzione di un’abside con terminazione rettangolare - più ampia rispetto all’antica - datata sulla base del rinvenimento monetale attribuibile a Gian Galeazzo Visconti (1382-1402). Interventi più recenti, che si collocano nel XVIII secolo, attestano ristrutturazioni di minore entità e la presenza di un’area funeraria interna al presbiterio destinata ad ecclesiastici, di cui è stato possibile indagare tre sepolture., The parish church of SS. Cornelio and Cipriano in Borgoratto Mormorolo was the subject of two archaeological excavations in 2006 and 2016, conducted by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in agreement with the Archaeological Superintendency of Lombardy. These mainly concerned the area of the presbytery, where it was possible to highlight stratigraphic deposits covering a wide time span. It was documented a first church or chapel in stone elements - of which the semicircular apse and the internal pavement are preserved - erected around the year 1000 and characterized by an external cemetery area, followed by numerous building interventions that modify the presbytery layout. Thanks to the discovery of a coin attributable to Gian Galeazzo Visconti (1382-1402) it has been possible to date the construction of an apse with a rectangular termination - wider than the ancient one - which actually connotes the current structure. More recent changes, which date back to the 18th century, attest to minor renovations; the excavations have also allowed to identify a funerary area - inside the presbytery - for the exclusive use of the ecclesiastics, of which it was possible to investigate three burials

Abstract

The Falcon Dipole (Future Accelerator post-LHC Cos-theta Optimized Nb3Sn Dipole) is a single aperture Nb3Sn cos-theta dipole short model in the framework of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) project. The Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), in collaboration with CERN, is in charge of designing and constructing the magnet, which is a crucial step towards the construction of High Field Nb3Sn magnets suitable for a post LHC collider. This paper recalls the electromagnetic design, the field quality and performances of the Falcon Dipole. The coil ends design has been implemented in a 3D FEM to study the peak field distribution on the magnet and influence on field quality. A special focus is given to the 2D analysis to study the effect of superconductor magnetization on field quality from the injection to the final energy and then to investigate the effectiveness of compensation methods. 40. Assessing earthquake effects on archaeological sites : the employment of photogrammetry and 3D model analysis

Abstract

This paper evaluates the application of photogrammetric recording to seismically-affected archaeological sites from the moment of on-site data acquisition through to the analysis of the resulting 3D model. This methodology facilitates (i) rapid but accurate recording of seismically-damaged archaeological contexts, (ii) three-dimensional reconstructions, (iii) the documentation of archeological features (e.g. plans, sections, elevations), and (iv) the extraction of additional information and data for archaeoseismological analysis (DEMs, for instance). Not only is greater detail observed using these methods but it can also be quantified at a distance from the target site, thereby extending the researcher’s time in the field. 3D photogrammetry and modelling also reduce the risk that small but significant features such as seismic fractures and deformations are overlooked. This paper draws on evidence from two case studies of the EU-funded ArMedEa project (Archaeology of Medieval Earthquakes in Europe, 1000-1550 AD), namely the Islamic fortified village of El Castillejo (Guajar Faragüit, Granada, Spain) and the crusader castle of Saranda Kolones (Paphos, Cyprus).

46. La inseguridad como determinante de exclusión social: el caso de Barcelona

Abstract

This study introduces the concept of insecurity as a theoretical resource for identifying structural factors that affect social exclusion in Barcelona. Using principal component analysis, a composite index referred to as the Social Insecurity Ranking (SIR) is constructed with the aim of studying the structure and volume of available resources in the 73 neighbourhoods of Spain's second largest city. The results suggest the need for an alternative measure of deprivation in contemporary cities that can address the relationship between social exclusion and insecurity. In particular, an analysis of the spatial distribution of the SIR in Barcelona indicates that both socially disfavoured and affluent neighbourhoods are geographically concentrated, respectively at the margins and in the north-west of the city, La presente investigación introduce el concepto de inseguridad como recurso teórico para identificar los factores estructurales que afectan a la exclusión social en Barcelona. A raíz de un análisis de componentes principales, se calculó un índice compuesto denominado Ranking de Inseguridad Social (SIR), con el objetivo de estudiar la estructura y el volumen de los recursos disponibles en los 73 barrios de la segunda ciudad más grande de España. Los resultados dan soporte a una medida alternativa de la privación en las ciudades contemporáneas que pueda abordar la relación entre exclusión social e inseguridad. En particular, el análisis de la distribución espacial del SIR en Barcelona indica que tanto las áreas socialmente desfavorecidas como las áreas afluentes se encuentran geográficamente concentradas, respectivamente, al margen y en la zona norte-oeste de la ciudad.

Abstract

In recent decades, there has been a steady growth in the population who enter higher education in both brick-and-mortar and, in particular, online universities. This has led to an increase in heterogeneous student profiles in a relatively short period of time. The purpose of this paper was to explore the student profiles at a university that gives all its courses online, namely the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), and analyse students' perceptions of their university experience. With this goal in mind, we constructed a student typology based on their social conditions and backgrounds using multiple correspondence analysis. Subsequently, an analysis of variance (Kruskall-Wallis test) was run to detect whether there were any differences in students' perceptions of the impact of their university experience (N = 1850). Although the prevailing profile of students in the online university continues to reflect students with responsibilities outside of the university (e.g., work and/or family), new profiles have been observed, made up of younger students without any work or family responsibilities. In turn, younger students' distinct perceptions of their university experience has been observed, depending on student profiles, with older students having more intrinsic perceptions, focused on learning and the acquisition of theoretical knowledge. Abstract

Las investigaciones en campo internacional indican que 4 de cada 5 ciudadanos europeos piden más acción contra la delincuencia y el terrorismo (De Wever, 2011), a pesar de que las estadísticas más recientes apuntan a la diminución del numero de delitos (Clarke, 2013). También en Barcelona, los datos muestran la existencia de un desajuste entre crimen y percepción puesto que, si bien los datos policiales registran una tendencia hacia la disminución de la delincuencia, la gente se siente más insegura. Sobre la base de un análisis en profundidad de la literatura es posible constatar que la inseguridad se considera hoy en día un fenómeno subjetivo que depende solo parcialmente del delito. Con el objetivo de establecer un marco interpretativo susceptible de estudiar el fenómeno de la inseguridad más allá de su dimensión delictiva, la investigación se ha enfocado en tres dimensiones distintas: * la inseguridad objetiva (vinculada a la evolución de las tasas de criminalidad), * la inseguridad subjetiva (o percepción de inseguridad), y * la inseguridad social (cuya definición depende de una serie de factores de vulnerabilidad susceptibles de tener un impacto en la valoración de la seguridad). Este planteamiento implicó el desarrollo de una metodología basada en un diseño cuantitativo secuencial estructurado en torno a tres objetivos: * Realizar una "agregación inteligente" de datos sobre el crimen (Hunt, Kilmer & Rubin, 2010) que permita recuperar información no sólo acerca de los problemas relacionados con la delincuencia sino también tomando en consideración datos de carácter contextual como, por ejemplo, las características demográficas y socio-­‐económicas del contexto del estudio; * Elaborar un marco conceptual capaz de analizar la relación entre las tres dimensiones constitutivas de la inseguridad y su implicación para un estudio en el contexto de Barcelona; * Analizar la relación entre la inseguridad y la afiliación social y profundizar en el conocimiento acerca del impacto de la inseguridad sobre diferentes grupos demográficos. En primer lugar, se creó una base de datos en la que se registró la información sobre crimen (inseguridad objetiva) y percepción de inseguridad (inseguridad subjetiva). En concreto se analizaron, por un lado, las fuentes oficiales de los cuerpos de policía locales (Mossos d’Esquadra y Guardia Urbana) y, por otro lado, las encuestas de victimización desarrolladas por el Departamento de Interior de la Generalitat de Catalunya. Los resultados del análisis de los datos secundarios señalaron, como mencionado, que dimensión objetiva y dimensión subjetiva no coinciden en Barcelona. En segundo lugar, se procedió a la operacionalización del concepto de inseguridad social para poder analizar los factores de vulnerabilidad socioeconómica que afectan a los ciudadanos de Barcelona y su impacto sobre la percepción de inseguridad. Los resultados del análisis estadístico descriptivo señalaron que los tres barrios con mayor presencia de factores de inseguridad social en Barcelona son: la Trinitat Nova, el Besòs i el Maresme y Ciutat Meridiana. Finalmente, se procedió al diseño y la implementación de una encuesta con el objetivo de analizar la relación entre la inseguridad y la afiliación social. La encuesta se llevó a cabo en 11 barrios de la ciudad de Barcelona sobre una muestra estructurada de 185 sujetos. El análisis estadístico descriptivo e inferencial permitió confirmar las hipótesis planteadas en la fase de diseño: haber sido víctima de un delito afecta negativamente la percepción de seguridad y la percepción del entorno (H1); los niveles de inseguridad difieren significativamente entre grupos sociales (H2) y, en concreto, las mujeres, las personas mayores de 65 años y los sujetos con niveles de estudios deficitarios, experimentan niveles de inseguridad proporcionalmente mayores comparados con el resto de la muestra; los factores de exclusión social ofrecen una explicación de las variaciones en la percepción de inseguridad, sobre todo en un contexto como el de la capital catalana donde se registran bajos índices delictivos (H3)., When the economic recession began in 2008, there was expectation among public authorities and scholars that crime would increase. Up-­‐to-­‐date criminological sources show that this has clearly not happened. Concerning Barcelona, when comparing police recorded crime statistics and victimization data, a paradox arises since available data outline a scenario where, despite a decreasing trend in crime, people feel more insecure. The correspondence between perceptions and reality is frequently imperfect given that insecurity may be affected by several factors (i.e. individual factors, mass media, personal experiences with crime and other individual and/or contextual factors). This heterogeneity may explain why, despite victimization being a relatively infrequent event in Barcelona, so many people are concerned about crime-­‐related issues. Assuming that fear of crime and perceived insecurity are clearly different topics, the research offers a quantitative analysis enabling a comprehensive understanding of crime-­‐related issues while considering contextual factors. With this in mind, the research addresses four key dimensions of insecurity: * The objective dimension focused on actual crime spread; * The subjective dimension related to cognitive aspects such as fear of crime or perceived risks; * The socio-­‐geographic dimension referring to neighbourhood characteristics that have effects on the perception of insecurity; * The socio-­‐economic dimension referring to the social consequences of poverty and deprived living conditions on ontological security. In order to explore the significance of the mismatch between crime and perceived insecurity, a survey (n=185) was designed to enable a more comprehensive assessment of insecurity in the context of Barcelona. The specific objective was to test the hypothesis of radical theories on fear of crime, that is to say that insecurity is mainly social and economic insecurity in disguise. Consistent with previous research, the statistical analysis showed that insecurity perception has an unequal impact on social groups. Being a woman, an older person, unemployed, or having a low level of education is associated with highest levels of insecurity. Furthermore, results show that the highest levels of fear emerge in neighbourhoods with a huge presence of residents at risk of poverty and social exclusion. Therefore, social insecurity seems to be a clear multiplier of perceived insecurity in Barcelona.
