Bottom-up engineering is a very attractive field. However, the periodic organization of molecules on a solid substrate is challenging, particularly in the selection of the appropriate characterization technique which is suitable for both large area and accurate analysis at the nanoscale. Here, this study demonstrates the unambiguous identification of complex molecular layers by infrared absorption microscopy at the nanometric scale. Metallogels built in a bottom-up approach by metal coordination and supramolecular interactions have important potential for the elaboration of smart materials. In this context, we present here the formation of supramolecular coordination polymers driven by the complexation of cobalt(II) or zinc(II) ions with polyoxometalate-based hybrids displaying two terpyridine ligands in a linear arrangement. Thanks to the electrostatic interactions between the polyoxometalate cores and metal nodes, the polymer chains self-assemble into fibers that physically cross-link to form gels above a critical concentration. Using spectroscopy, microscopy, X-ray scattering, and rheometry, complemented by molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the supramolecular organization of the chains in the fibers and the resulting processes leading to gelation. Compared to previously reported systems, these gels have improved rheological features and appealing properties, such as birefringence, luminescence, and spin crossover, paving the way for their use as building blocks for multifunctional smart materials., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2024 The Authors. The binary assembly DDA-{Mo 132 }/OA-γ-Fe 2 O 3 (DDA = didodecyldimethylammonium, {Mo 132 } = [Mo 132 O 372 (CH 3 COO) 30 (H 2 O) 72 ] 42- , OA = oleic acid) constitutes one of the two examples in the literature of binary superlattices made of a mixing of nanocrystals and oxo-clusters. In a precedent work, we reported in details the preparation of such magnetic binary systems and studied the effect of the nature of the polyoxometalates (POMs) on the magnetic properties. In the present paper, we study the stability of this model binary assembly under heating at various temperatures. Indeed, especially if magnetic and/or transport properties are targeted, an annealing can be essential to change the phase of the nanocrystals in a more magnetic one and/or to desorb the organic capping of the nano-objects that can constitute an obstacle to the electronic communication between the nano-objects. We gave evidence that the maghemite organization in the binary assembly is maintained until 370°C under vacuum thanks to the presence of the POMs. This latter evolve in the phase MoO 3 , but still permits to avoid the aggregation of the nanocrystals as well as preserve their periodical arrangement. On the contrary, an assembly made of pure γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanocrystals displays a clear aggregation of the nano-objects from 370°C, as attested by transmission and scanning electronic microscopies and confirmed by magnetic measurements. The stability of the magnetic nanocrystals in such POMs/nanocrystals assemblies opens the way to (i) the elaboration of new binary assemblies from POMs and numerous kinds of nanocrystals with a good control on the magnetic properties and to (ii) the investigation of new physical properties as exchange coupling, or magneto-transport in such systems., (Copyright © 2019 Breitwieser, Garnier, Auvray, Ngo, Baptiste, Menguy, Proust, Petit, Volatron and Salzemann.)

The potential energy profiles of the endo and exo additions of ozone on benzene have been theoretically investigated within the framework provided by the electron localization function (ELF). This has been done by carrying out hybrid Hartree-Fock DFT B3LYP calculation followed by a bonding evolution theory (BET) analysis. For both approaches, the reaction is exothermic by ~98 kJ mol(-1). However, the activation energy is calculated to 10 kJ mol(-1) lower in the endo channel than in the exo one; therefore the formation of the endo C(6)H(6)O(3) adduct is kinetically favored. Six structural stability domains are identified along both reaction pathways as well as the bifurcation catastrophes responsible for the changes in the topology of the system. This provides a chemical description of the reaction mechanism in terms of heterolytic synchronous bond formation.
