AIM: To investigate the onset of age, gender, profession, marital characteristics, clinical symptoms, signs, image characteristics of fundus and laser scanning features of syphilitic chorioretinitis.METHODS: Retrospective case series study. A total of 114 patients(138 eyes), 24 of whom were double eyes diagnosed with syphilitic chorioretinitis from January 2006 to January 2023 were included in this study. All of the data were collected from eye examination including the best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), intraocular pressure(IOP), fundus photography, optical coherence tomography(OCT), fundus fluorescein angiography(FFA), indocyanine green angiography(ICGA), visual field, visual evoked response; and blood tests including rapid plasma reagin(RPR)test and treponema pallidum hemagglutination(TPPA)test, tuberculin test, tuberculosis spot test, human immunodeficiency virus, human leukocyte antigen-B27, rheumatism series examination.RESULTS: All patients tested positive for RPR and TPPA, while other laboratory tests were negative, confirming the diagnosis of syphilitic chorioretinopathy. The average age of onset was 44±13.1 years old, with 59 males(51.8%), 55 females(48.2%), 90 monocular cases(78.9%), and 24 binocular cases(21.1%), and there were no significant differences in gender, marriage, or occupation. The main clinical features were visual loss, hyperemia of the optic disc, grayish-yellow opacity of the central retina; FFA mainly showed early dot weak background fluorescence in the peripheral region of the macula, retinal blood vessel fluorescence leakage staining, retinal pigment epithelium(RPE)fluorescence accumulation and optic disc staining or strong fluorescence; ICGA and OCT were mainly manifested by squamous weak fluorescence of the posterior retina; and the manifestations of FFA and ICGA were symmetrical; OCT revealed hyperreflective dots and pinpoint projection of RPE.CONCLUSION: The median age of onset in patients with syphilitic chorioretinitis is 44 years old, and monocular onset is more common. The patient's gender, marriage, and occupation have no significant characteristics. The clinical manifestations mainly include decreased vision, gray white cells in the vitreous body, thickening of the posterior pole retina, and grayish yellow changes. Correctly identifying OCT, FFA, and ICGA features can reduce missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis, and make an early and correct diagnosis and treatment of patients.

During two expeditions to the seamounts in the Yap-Caroline area of the Western Pacific, a new genus, Phoxirostus gen. nov., in the family Laphystiopsidae Stebbing, 1899, is erected for two new species, P. longicarpus sp. nov. (type species) and P. yapensis sp. nov. The new genus can be distinguished from the other three laphystiopsid genera by the acute rostrum not overreaching the distal end of the first peduncular article of antenna 1, the outer plate of maxilla 1 bearing 10–11 spines, and the elongated carpus of pereopods 3–7 being distinctly longer than half the length of the propodus. Phoxirostus longicarpus sp. nov. differs from P. yapensis sp. nov. by the shape of the eyes and coxa 4, the presence of posterodistal protrusions on pleonite 1, and the number of posterodistal protrusions on pleonite 2. Generic analysis of one mitochondrial (COI) and one nuclear (H3) gene using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference clarified the phylogenetic position of the Laphystiopsidae within the superfamily Iphimedioidea Boeck, 1871. This study aimed to decipher the influence of red mud on the mechanical properties, pore structure, and microstructure of basic magnesium sulfate cements (BMSCs). The results showed that BMSC prepared with an appropriate addition of red mud exhibited improved mechanical properties and yielded the highest compressive strength of 94.54 MPa after curing for 28 days. Adding red mud reduced the total porosity and optimized the pore structure of BMSC. The microstructure and hydration products of the specimens were examined using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The results illustrate that the addition of 50% red mud did not affect the amount of the main strength phase 5-1-7 produced in BMSC. It could also reduce the residual amount of MgO and the generation of Mg(OH)2. The red mud and the M-S-H gel generated by the reaction between active SiO2 and α-MgO in the red mud together filled the pore structure of BMSC, making its microstructure denser and higher-strength. This study aims to improve the comprehensive use of red mud, and the results show that red mud can improve the mechanical properties of BMSCs, protecting the environment and simultaneously reducing BMSC production costs to create good economic benefits. Organic anodes have emerged as a promising energy storage medium in proton ion batteries (PrIBs) due to their ability to reversibly accommodate non‐metallic proton ions. Nevertheless, the currently available organic electrodes often encounter dissolution issues, leading to a decrease in long‐cycle stability. In addition, the inherent potential of the organic anode is generally relatively high, resulting in low cell voltage of assembled PrIBs (<1.0 V). To address these challenges, a novel long‐period stable, low redox potential biphenylzine derivative, [2,2′‐biphenazine]‐7,7′‐tetraol (BPZT) is explored, from the perspective of molecular symmetry and solubility, in conjunction with the effect of the molecular frontier orbital energy levels on its redox potential. Specifically, BPZT exhibited a low potential of 0.29 V (vs SHE) and is virtually insoluble in 2 m H2SO4 electrolyte during cycling. When paired with MnO2@GF or PbO2 cathodes, the resulting PrIBs achieve cell voltages of 1.07 V or 1.44 V, respectively, and maintain a high capacity retention of 90% over 20000 cycles. Additionally, these full batteries can operate stably at a high mass loading of 10 mgBPZT cm−2, highlighting their potential toward long‐term energy storage applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The family Diogenidae Ortmann, 1892 is a diverse and abundance group of hermit crabs, but their systematics and phylogenetic relationships are highly complex and unresolved. Herein, we gathered nucleotide sequence data from two mitochondrial (16S rRNA and COI) and two nuclear (NaK and PEPCK) genes for a total of 2,308 bp in length across 38 species from six extant diogenid genera. Molecular data were combined with 41 morphological characters to estimate the largest phylogeny of diogenid hermit crabs to date with the aim of testing the proposed taxonomic scheme of Diogenidae and addressing intergeneric relationships within this family. Despite conflicts between mitochondrial and nuclear DNA trees, the combined-data tree reflects the contributions of each dataset, and improves tree resolution and support for internal nodes. Contrary to traditional classification, our total evidence revealed a paraphyletic Diogenidae based on internally nested representatives of Coenobitidae Dana, 1851. Within Diogenidae, the studied diogenid hermit crabs were split between two clades with high support, which contradicts recent morphological classification scheme for Diogenidae sensu lato based on fossil records. The genus Diogenes Dana, 1851 was found nested inside Paguristes Dana, 1851, which formed a clade being separated from the remainder, pointing towards paraphyly in Paguristes. In another clade, Dardanus Paulson, 1875 occupied a basal position relative to the other diogenids, while Calcinus Dana, 1851 and Clibanarius Dana, 1852 showed sister relationships and formed a cluster with Ciliopagurus Forest, 1995. Among the morphological characters examined, carapace shield and telson were identified as phylogenetically significant for grouping diogenid genera, while phylogenetic insignificance of gill number was evidenced by its mosaic pattern in diogenid phylogeny. The present study sheds light on the controversial generic phylogeny of Diogenidae and highlights the necessity for thorough taxonomic revisions of this family as well as some genera (e.g., Paguristes) to reconcile current classifications with phylogenetic relationships. Nanoplastics (NPs) cause serious contamination of drinking water and potential damage to human health. This study aimed to investigate the effects of NPs with different particle sizes and concentrations on the reproductive function of male mice. In this study, free drinking water exposure was used to expose male BALB/C mice to PS-NPs (20 nm, 200 nm, and 1000 nm) at 0.1 mg/L, 1 mg/L, and 5 mg/L for 4 months. The male reproductive function of the mice was assessed after NPs exposure, and fecal and blood samples were collected for macrogenomics and metabolomics. The results showed that PS-NPs resulted in mice with reduced testicular organ coefficients, decreased sperm quality, altered testicular tissue structure, disturbed sex hormone levels, and abnormal levels of inflammatory factors and oxidative stress. Furthermore, this study found that NP exposure affected the alteration of gut communities and metabolic pathways related to male reproduction, such as Clostridium and glutathione metabolism. Importantly, we found an effect of NP particle size on reproductive function. In the future, more attention should be paid to the smaller particle sizes of NPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concentration of interfacial normal stress at the free edges of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) can result in coating spallation. Fatigue cracking is one of the main reasons for creating free edges under complex loads. It is crucial to investigate the fatigue cracking of coatings under cyclic loads to assess potential coating failure. To address this issue, a novel model was proposed to predict the fatigue life of the YSZ topcoat under stress parallel to the interface. Firstly, this study conducted uniaxial and tensile-torsional fatigue tests at elevated temperatures on specimens with atmospheric plasma-sprayed TBCs. The test results revealed that fatigue cracks appeared in the topcoat under cyclic loads, but these cracks did not propagate into the bondcoat or substrate immediately. The number of cycles before the topcoat cracked was found to be associated with the magnitude of the cyclic load. Secondly, this study analyzed the test conditions using the finite element method. Simulations indicated that the crack direction in the topcoat under complex loading conditions was aligned with the first principal stress direction. Finally, the fatigue life prediction model of the topcoat was established based on experiments and simulations. The predicted results fell within a fourfold scatter band. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses a study conducted on Chinese patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) to understand the mechanisms of chemotherapy response and resistance. The study analyzed the multi-omics characteristics of tumor tissue, circulating tumor cells (CTCs), and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in SCLC patients. The results showed that patients who responded well to chemotherapy had better survival outcomes. The study also identified potential molecular mechanisms, such as KDR mutation, PI3K amplification, and activation of VEGF and KRAS pathways, that contribute to chemotherapy resistance. The findings suggest that targeted therapies and immunotherapy may benefit patients who are resistant to chemotherapy. This paper summarizes the relevant literature through the content analysis method and combines expert advice. The company built a four-level indicator including traffic knowledge and skills, and 13 pilot-level traffic literacy evaluation indicators system including traffic rules and mechanical common sense. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis method is used to determine the weight of each indicator of urban driver traffic literacy evaluation, and conduct pilot survey and evaluation of motor vehicle drivers in Zhengzhou. The results show that the evaluation value of motor vehicle driver traffic literacy in Zhengzhou is 72.07, including a traffic knowledge score of 77.09, traffic awareness score of 73.95, traffic skill score of 78.12, and traffic behavior score of up to 84.3. It shows that the respondents have relatively more active and responsible traffic behaviors and have a certain degree of understanding of traffic skills and traffic knowledge. However, they are relatively low in traffic awareness.
