Abstract Background Invertases (INVs) are key enzymes in sugar metabolism, cleaving sucrose into glucose and fructose and playing an important role in plant development and the stress response, however, the INV gene family in passion fruit has not been systematically reported. Results In this study, a total of 16 PeINV genes were identified from the passion fruit genome and named according to their subcellular location and chromosome position. These include six cell wall invertase (CWINV) genes, two vacuolar invertase (VINV) genes, and eight neutral/alkaline invertase (N/AINV) genes. The gene structures, phylogenetic tree, and cis-acting elements of PeINV gene family were predicted using bioinformatics methods. Results showed that the upstream promoter region of the PeINV genes contained various response elements; particularly, PeVINV2, PeN/AINV3, PeN/AINV5, PeN/AINV6, PeN/AINV7, and PeN/AINV8 had more response elements. Additionally, the expression profiles of PeINV genes under different abiotic stresses (drought, salt, cold temperature, and high temperature) indicated that PeCWINV5, PeCWINV6, PeVINV1, PeVINV2, PeN/AINV2, PeN/AINV3, PeN/AINV6, and PeN/AINV7 responded significantly to these abiotic stresses, which was consistent with cis-acting element prediction results. Sucrose, glucose, and fructose are main soluble components in passion fruit pulp. The contents of total soluble sugar, hexoses, and sweetness index increased significantly at early stages during fruit ripening. Transcriptome data showed that with an increase in fruit development and maturity, the expression levels of PeCWINV2, PeCWINV5, and PeN/AINV3 exhibited an up-regulated trend, especially for PeCWINV5 which showed highest abundance, this correlated with the accumulation of soluble sugar and sweetness index. Transient overexpression results demonstrated that the contents of fructose, glucose and sucrose increased in the pulp of PeCWINV5 overexpressing fruit. It is speculated that this cell wall invertase gene, PeCWINV5, may play an important role in sucrose unloading and hexose accumulation. Conclusion In this study, we systematically identified INV genes in passion fruit for the first time and further investigated their physicochemical properties, evolution, and expression patterns. Furthermore, we screened out a key candidate gene involved in hexose accumulation. This study lays a foundation for further study on INV genes and will be beneficial on the genetic improvement of passion fruit breeding.

Highlights A series of layered oxide cathode materials were synthesized by high-temperature shock strategy for the first time. The approaching ultimate solid reaction rate of the layered nickel-rich layered oxide LiNixCoyMnzO2 was investigated for the first time. Ultrafast average reaction rate of phase transition from Ni0.6Co0.2Mn0.2(OH)2 to Li-containing oxides is 66.7 (% s-1), that is, taking only 1.5 s.

Constructing structure-function relationships is critical for the rational design and development of efficient catalysts for CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR). In2O3 is well-known for its specific ability to produce formic acid. However, how the crystal phase and surface affect the CO2RR activity is still unclear, making it difficult to further improve the intrinsic activity and screen for the most active structure. In this work, cubic and hexagonal In2O3 with different stable surfaces ((111) and (110) for cubic, (120) and (104) for hexagonal) are investigated for CO2RR. Theoretical results demonstrate that the adsorption of reactants on cubic In2O3 is stronger than that on hexagonal In2O3, with the cubic (111) surface being the most active for CO2RR. In experiments, synthesized cubic In2O3 nanosheets with predominantly exposed (111) surfaces exhibited a high HCOO– Faradaic efficiency (87.5%) and HCOO– current density (–16.7 mA cm–2) at –0.9 V vs RHE. In addition, an aqueous Zn-CO2 battery based on a cubic In2O3 cathode was assembled. Our work correlates the phases and surfaces with the CO2RR activity, and provides a fundamental understanding of the structure-function relationship of In2O3, thereby contributing to further improvements in its CO2RR activity. Moreover, the results provide a principle for the directional preparation of materials with optimal phases and surfaces for efficient electrocatalysis.

Based on the fact that hydrostatic pressure affects chemical potentials of reaction species and the structure evolution of electric double layer (EDL), the authors propose a generalized-BV equation to analyze the anodic dissolution process of X80 steel in deep-sea environment. Combined with the results of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests, the following conclusions can be drawn: hydrostatic pressure can compress the electric double layer non-uniformly. The CHCD (CD: capacitance of diffused layer; CH: capacitance of compact layer) value increases first and then decreases with increasing hydrostatic pressure and reaches its maximum at 15 MPa, which is sure to influence the difference in electrical potential that drives chemical reaction at interface. Ultimately, the anodic dissolution current increases and then decreases with rising hydrostatic pressure at the same anodic polarized potential. Besides, low hydrostatic pressure may contribute to forming a dense corrosion product film and inducing a good inhibiting effect on further dissolution of X80 steel; However, when the hydrostatic pressure exceeds the critical value of 20Mpa, too high anodic dissolution rate along with promoted Cl− adsorption will deteriorate the protection performance of corrosion product film, and exacerbate local corrosion process.

Abstract Micrometer‐sized silicon monoxide (SiO) is regarded as a high‐capacity anode material with great potential for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, the problems of low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), poor electrical conductivity, and large volume change of SiO inevitably impede further application. Herein, the vacuum thermal reduced SiOx with amorphous AlPO4 and carbon double‐coating layers is used as the ideal anode material in LIBs. The vacuum thermal reduction at low temperature forms fine silicon grains in the internal particles and maintains the external integrity of SiOx particles, contributing to mitigation of the stress intensification and the subsequent design of multifunctional coating. Meanwhile, the innovative introduction of the multifunctional amorphous AlPO4 layer not only improves the ion/electron conduction properties to ensure the fast reversible reaction but also provides a robust protective layer with stable physicochemical characteristics and inhibits the volume expansion effect. The sample of SiOx anode shows an ICE up to 87.6% and a stable cycling of 200 cycles at 1 A g−1 with an initial specific capacity of 1775.8 mAh g−1. In addition, the assembled pouch battery of 1.8 Ah can also ensure a cycling life of over 150 cycles, demonstrating a promising prospect of this optimized micrometer‐sized SiOx anode material for industrial applications.

Abstract Water splitting is a critical process for the production of green hydrogen, contributing to the advancement of a circular economy. However, the application of water splitting devices on a large scale is primarily impeded by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode. Thus, developing and designing efficient OER catalysts is a significant target. NiFe‐based catalysts are extensively researched as excellent OER electrocatalysts due to their affordability, abundant reserves, and intrinsic activities. However, they still suffer from long‐term stability challenges. To date, few systematic strategies for improving OER durability have been reported. In this review, various advanced NiFe‐based catalysts are introduced. Moreover, the OER stability challenges of NiFe‐based electrocatalysts in alkaline media, including iron segregation, structural degradation, and peeling from the substrate are summarized. More importantly, strategies to enhance OER stability are highlighted and opportunities are discussed to facilitate future stability studies for alkaline water electrolysis. This review presents a design strategy for NiFe‐based electrocatalysts and anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers to overcome stability challenges in OER, which also emphasizes the importance of long‐term stability in alkaline media and its significance for achieving large‐scale commercialization.

Abstract Potassium-sulfur batteries attract tremendous attention as high-energy and low-cost energy storage system, but achieving high utilization and long-term cycling of sulfur remains challenging. Here we show a strategy of optimizing potassium polysulfides for building high-performance potassium-sulfur batteries. We design the composite of tungsten single atom and tungsten carbide possessing potassium polysulfide migration/conversion bi-functionality by theoretical screening. We create two ligand environments for tungsten in the metal-organic framework, which respectively transmute into tungsten single atom and tungsten carbide nanocrystals during pyrolysis. Tungsten carbide provide catalytic sites for potassium polysulfides conversion, while tungsten single atoms facilitate sulfides migration thereby significantly alleviating the insulating sulfides accumulation and the associated catalytic poisoning. Resultantly, highly efficient potassium-sulfur electrochemistry is achieved under high-rate and long-cycling conditions. The batteries deliver 89.8% sulfur utilization (1504 mAh g−1), superior rate capability (1059 mAh g−1 at 1675 mA g−1) and long lifespan of 200 cycles at 25 °C. These advances enlighten direction for future KSBs development.

Abstract Silicon suboxide (SiOx, x ≈ 1) is promising in serving as an anode material for lithium‐ion batteries with high capacity, but it has a low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) due to the irreversible formation of lithium silicates during the first cycle. In this work, we modify SiOx by solid‐phase Mg doping reaction using low‐cost Mg powder as a reducing agent. We show that Mg reduces SiO2 in SiOx to Si and forms MgSiO3 or Mg2SiO4. The MgSiO3 or Mg2SiO4 are mainly distributed on the surface of SiOx, which suppresses the irreversible lithium‐ion loss and enhances the ICE of SiOx. However, the formation of MgSiO3 or Mg2SiO4 also sacrifices the capacity of SiOx. Therefore, by controlling the reaction process between Mg and SiOx, we can tune the phase composition, proportion, and morphology of the Mg‐doped SiOx and manipulate the performance. We obtain samples with a capacity of 1226 mAh g–1 and an ICE of 84.12%, which show significant improvement over carbon‐coated SiOx without Mg doping. By the synergistical modification of both Mg doping and prelithiation, the capacity of SiOx is further increased to 1477 mAh g–1 with a minimal compromise in the ICE (83.77%).

Developing high‐performance anode current collectors with three‐dimensional structure and lithiophilic layers is of great importance to further advance the application of lithium metal batteries. However, relatively few research has focused on the transition of substrate and the intrinsic structure stability after electrodeposition of lithium on substrates, which leads to an incomplete understanding of the behavior of lithium deposition. Herein, a lithium metal anodes host with a highly stable and 3D structure has been effectively produced through in situ development of nanoflake arrays embedded with Co3O4 obtained from ZIF on nickel foams (Co3O4‐NF). And the actual lithium deposition sites and lithium deposition process on Co3O4‐NF are elucidated via a combination of characterization techniques and electrochemical analytical methods. Consequently, the resulting Co3O4‐NF@Li anodes could effectively inhibit lithium dendrite formation and mitigate volume expansion, demonstrating a significantly extended and consistent lifespan of 800 cycles (1600 h) at 1 mA cm−2 with low overpotential and insignificant voltage fluctuation for the process of lithium stripping and plating in symmetric cells. Herein, it is aimed to examine the transitions of metal oxides as a lithiophilic site for the lithium metal anode. It offers novel perspectives and approaches for the design of dendrite‐free lithium metal anodes.

Traditional cement epoxy pavements suffer from inherent limitations such as terrible tribological properties, poor wear resistance, and weak impact resistance, presenting significant challenges to ensure the safety and continuous operation of urban roads. As a solution, high-performance cement epoxy composite grouting materials have emerged as the preferred option for engineering construction and road maintenance. In this study, CSP/epoxy cement (CSEC) composite materials were prepared by emulsion polymerization. The thermal properties of the materials were characterized, revealing that CSP enhances the thermal properties of epoxy cement (EC) to a certain extent. Furthermore, the frictional properties of CSEC composite materials and pure epoxy cement under different normal loads were investigated. The results indicated that the CSEC composite material exhibited a slight increase in friction coefficient and a notable decrease in wear rate compared to pure epoxy cement (EC). Specifically, the wear rate of CSEC decreased by 14.4% at a load of 20 N, highlighting the enhanced frictional performance facilitated by CSP. Mechanistic analysis attributed the improvement to the unique core-shell structure of CSP, which imparted higher impact resistance and eliminated alleviate residual stresses at the friction interface. This structural advantage further enhanced the wear resistance of materials, making it a promising choice for improving the durability and safety of urban road surfaces.

Electrochemical noise (EN) signals generated during corrosion fatigue (CF) process of friction stir welded (FSW) AA6061-T6 joints in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution under different loading conditions were monitored. Wavelet analysis and cumulative probability calculations showed that the increase in peak stress, stress ratio and stress frequency all lead to a decrease in Rn and an increase in the incubation rate of local events. Under current experimental conditions, the influence of peak stress is the most significant, while the influence of frequency is the least. The combination of EN signal analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations indicates that the coarsening of β′ phase and the extensive dissolution of β'' phase are the main reasons for preferential failure in the weakest heat affected zone. The main contribution of this study is preliminary investigating the CF behavior of FSW AA6061 joints under different low cycle fatigue conditions. Moreover, EN is an effective strategy for monitoring CF process and establishes a connection between an alternative EN technique and in-situ CF behavior research.

ABSTRACT Neoscytalidium dimidiatum (class Dothideomycetes) is a fungus responsible for canker disease in pitaya stems and fruits, leading to significant economic losses. However, little is known about the pathogenesis, family evolution, and genetic variants of this species. In this study, we report a high-quality genome sequence of N. dimidiatum based on the Nanopore sequencing technology platform for sequencing and Hi-C assembly technology for genome assembly. The genome contains 12 chromosomes (2n = 2× = 12; diploid), with a sequencing depth of 186.1×, encoding 12,349 proteins. Molecular phylogenetic analysis showed that N. dimidiatum is evolutionarily close to Botryosphaeria dothidea. Compared to other fungi, the N. dimidiatum genome contains many carbohydrate-active enzymes and secondary metabolites. Additionally, we predict that N. dimidiatum contains 121 candidate effectors that may play important roles in infection and colonization, promoting pathogenicity in pitaya. Nine of these effectors were confirmed to contain signal peptides and inhibit BAX/INF1-induced necrosis in Nicotiana benthamiana, demonstrating their importance during infection. Finally, we also confirm that N. dimidiatum does not form an appressorium or infection thread but instead infects pitaya via open stomata. In conclusion, the results provide a foundation for future research on N. dimidiatum and the control of pitaya canker. IMPORTANCE Pitaya canker is a significant disease in the pitaya industry in China, causing significant economic losses. Therefore, systematic research on Neoscytalidium dimidiatum, the fungus implicated in pitaya canker, is essential for comprehending the pathogenesis of this disease and developing effective control strategies. We applied comparative genomics to reveal the genetic evolution, metabolic diversity, environmental adaptation, and pathogenicity of N. dimidiatum, providing ideal targets for studies of pathogenesis and molecular targets for fungicide development. Moreover, the systematic study of the N. dimidiatum growth cycle, morphological characteristics, and molecular phylogenetic analysis can promote a comprehensive understanding of its genetic basis.

Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as important candidate materials for energy storage systems (EES) due to high Earth abundance and low cost of sodium resources. Among all cathode materials for SIBs, polyanion‐type materials can provide high ionic conductivity and high structural stability, simultaneously, due to the 3D network structure. Their rich variety also provides more options for the commercialization of SIBs. However, the majority of polyanion‐type materials are not suitable for commercialization due to either high costs or complex preparation process. Herein, low‐cost polyanion‐type materials that are suitable for the commercialization of SIBs are discussed. The latest developments of polyanion‐type materials are overviewed. Furthermore, the challenges and countermeasures of polyanion‐type materials are summarized. This review can provide valuable insights for the commercialization of polyanion‐type materials.

This paper focuses on the preparation and evaluation of a novel humidity-control material, vermiculite/(sodium polyacrylate(AA)–acrylamide(AM)), using inverse suspension polymerization. Acrylic acid and acrylamide were introduced into the interlayer of modified vermiculite during the polymerization process, leading to the formation of a strong association with the modified vermiculite. The addition of vermiculite increased the specific surface area and pore volume of the composites. To investigate the moisture absorption and desorption properties of the composites, an orthogonal experiment and single-factor experiment were conducted to analyze the impacts of vermiculite content, neutralization degree, and the mass ratio of AA to AM. According to the control experiment, the addition of vermiculite was found to enhance the pore structure and surface morphology of the composite material, surpassing both vermiculite and PAA-AM copolymer in terms of humidity control capacity and rate. The optimal preparation conditions were identified as follows: vermiculite mass fraction of 4 wt%, a neutralization degree of 90%, and mAA:mAM = 4:1. The moisture absorption rate and moisture release rate of the composite material prepared under these conditions are 1.285 g/g and 1.172 g/g. The humidity control process of the composite material is governed by pseudo second-order kinetics, which encompasses the complete adsorption process. These results indicate that the vermiculite/PAA-AM composite humidity control material has excellent humidity control performance and is a simple and efficient humidity control method.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food that feeds over half of the world's population, and the contents of metallic elements in rice grain play important roles in human nutrition. In this study, the contents of important metallic elements were determined by ICP-OES, and included cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) in brown rice, in the first node from the top (Node 1), in the second node from the top (Node 2), and in roots of 55 hybrids and their parental lines. The heritability of metallic element contents (MECs), the general combining ability (GCA) for MEC, and the correlation between MECs in different organs/tissues of hybrids were also analyzed. The results indicated that: (1) there was a positive correlation between the contents of Cd and Zn in nodes and roots, but a negative correlation between the contents of Cd and Zn in brown rice of the hybrids(2) the GCA for MECs can be used to evaluate the ability of the parental lines to improve the metal contents in brown rice of the hybrids(3) the contents of Cd, Zn, Ca, and Mg in brown rice were mainly affected by additive genetic effects(4) the restorer lines R2292 and R2265 can be used to cultivate hybrids with high Zn and low Cd contents in the brown rice.

Abstract Neoscytalidium dimidiatum is the main causal agent of pitaya canker. Most studies of virulence and pathogenicity genes have measured expression levels using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Suitable reference genes are essential for ensuring that estimates of gene expression levels by RT-qPCR are accurate. However, no reference genes can be robustly applied across all contexts and species. No studies to date have evaluated the most effective reference genes for normalizing gene expression levels estimated by RT-qPCR in N. dimidiatum. In this study, RT-qPCR data for individual candidate reference genes were analyzed using four different methods: the delta Ct method and the geNorm, NormFinder, and BestKeeper algorithms. We evaluated the utility of eight candidate reference genes (18S rRNA, Actin (1), Actin (2), Actin, GAPDH (1), GAPDH (2), UBQ, and Tubulin) for normalizing expression levels estimated by RT-qPCR in N. dimidiatum at different developmental stages, at different temperatures, and during interaction with pitaya. All candidate reference genes were suitable for gene expression analysis except for Actin (2). Tubulin and Actin (1) were the most stably expressed reference genes under different temperatures. Actin (1) and Actin were the most stably expressed reference genes in N. dimidiatum at different developmental stages. Tubulin and UBQ were the most stably expressed reference genes during interaction with pitaya. Actin and 18s rRNA were the most stably expressed across all experimental conditions. Subsequently, Tubulin and UBQ were further investigated in analyses of pectinase expression during the pitaya–N. dimidiatum interaction. Our results provide insights that will aid future RT-qPCR studies of gene expression in N. dimidiatum.

With the gradual expansion of the development scale of wind power and photovoltaic (PV) power plants, the multi-energy complementary power generation system, typically represented by hydro-PV/hydro-wind/hydro-wind-PV, has become an important part of modern power systems. Aiming at the joint operation of the cascaded hydropower stations after wind-PV grid connection, a medium- and long-term implicit stochastic joint dispatching function model for wind-PV-cascaded hydropower stations based on the SVM(support vector machine) method is developed in this paper, which selects the final water levels of the reservoirs as the dependent variables, and the initial water levels of the reservoirs, the reservoir inflow, the interval inflow as well as the wind and PV output are independent variables. First, the optimization of main parameters C (Penalty coefficient), g (Kernel function parameter) and p (Insensitive loss coefficient) of the model are achieved by particle swarm algorithm. The Gaussian radial basis function is then used to fit the scheduling function proposed in this paper. Finally, the rolling simulation calculation and correction of the obtained scheduling function are realized by C# programming language of VS2017 platform. The results show that the proposed scheduling function is an effective method for scheduling decision-making, and the revised water level process, output process as well as annual electricity production of the scheduling model are not significantly different from the optimal scheduling results. Moreover, the simulation results conform to the existing scheduling rules, which has shown it can be used to inform the operation of cascaded hydropower stations under the multi-energy complementary system.

Abstract A metal electrode is a significant component of a zinc–air battery (ZAB), but the metal material is usually not elastic, which severely restricts the application of flexible and stretchable ZABs in the field of wearable electronic devices. Herein, we report a flexible and stretchable metal‐coated textile prepared by a dynamic stretching–electroplating based on a wavy spandex textile substrate. Benefiting from the unique woven and wavy structure, the metal‐coated textile shows a high stretchability of 100% and stable conductivity. In situ scanning electron microscope observation during stretching showed that the tensile strain of the metal‐coated textile is mainly attributed to the deformation of the microfiber network at the bottom position of the wave structure. In addition, a sodium carboxymethyl cellulose–polyacrylic acid–potassium hydroxide composite hydrogel has been used as the electrolyte. This hydrogel shows excellent ionic conductivity, mechanical properties, and water retention properties, which makes it suitable for the semi‐open system of ZAB. Furthermore, a flexible and stretchable sandwich‐structure ZAB, assembled using the above‐mentioned electrodes and electrolyte, operates stably even under rapid stretching/releasing cycle deformation. Because of its facile preparation and low cost, this flexible and stretchable ZAB is suitable for fabrication of large‐area batteries to obtain higher output current and power to drive wearable electronic devices.

In the DC power distribution systems, One-cycle control (OCC) based three-phase VIENNA rectifiers achieves high power factor (PF) easily. However, under unbalanced grid conditions, the fundamental phase shift between the input current and corresponding phase voltage obviously deteriorates PF, especially when carrier-fundamental frequency ratio varies. In this paper, based on the mathematical model of the rectifier with OCC control under unbalanced grid conditions, the fundamental phase shift problem is analyzed in detail, including variable carrier-fundamental frequency ratio. Moreover, aiming at solving this problem, a fundamental phase shift compensation scheme is proposed. By introducing a second order generalized integrator (SOGI) to generate the complex vector grid currents feedback, which combines with unbalanced grid voltages, three-phase modulation signals are dynamically modified to eliminate the fundamental phase shift. To facilitate the digital control for the rectifier, the digital implementation of the proposed compensation scheme is described in this paper. At last, a digital-controlled VIENNA rectifier experimental test bench is built, and the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by experimental results.

Wilson's disease (WD) is a genetic disorder with the A7P7B gene mutations. It is difficult to diagnose in clinic. The purpose of this study was to confirm whether amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) is one of the potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of WD. The study enrolled 30 healthy controls (HCs) and 37 WD patients (WDs) to obtain their resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data. ALFF was obtained through preprocessing of the rs-fMRI data. To distinguish between patients with WDs and HCs, four clusters with abnormal ALFF-z values were identified through between-group comparisons. Based on these clusters, three machine learning models were developed, including Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Logistic Regression (LR). Abnormal ALFF z-values were also combined with volume information, clinical variables, and imaging features to develop machine learning models. There were 4 clusters where the ALFF z-values of the WDs were significantly higher than that of the HCs. Cluster1 was in the cerebellar region, Cluster2 was in the left caudate nucleus, Cluster3 was in the bilateral thalamus, and Cluster4 was in the right caudate nucleus. In the training set and test set, the models trained with Cluster2, Cluster3, and Cluster4 achieved area of curve (AUC) greater than 0.80. In the Delong test, only the AUC values of models trained with Cluster4 exhibited statistical significance. The AUC values of the Logit model (P = 0.04) and RF model (P = 0.04) were significantly higher than those of the SVM model. In the test set, the LR model and RF model trained with Cluster3 had high specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy. By conducting the Delong test, we discovered that there was no statistically significant inter-group difference in AUC values between the model that integrates multi-modal information and the model before fusion. The LR models trained with multimodal information and Cluster 4, as well as the LR and RF models trained with multimodal information and Cluster 3, have demonstrated high accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity. Overall, these findings suggest that using ALFF based on the thalamus or caudate nucleus as markers can effectively differentiate between WDs and HCs. The fusion of multimodal information did not significantly improve the classification performance of the models before fusion.

Abstract Alkali metal–carbon dioxide (Li/Na/K‐CO2) batteries are emerging electrochemical energy storage technologies in the context of the energy crisis and the urgent demand for carbon neutrality. Alkali metal–CO2 batteries offer a new strategy for CO2 fixation and utilization, and thus has been receiving considerable attention in recent years. Considerable progress has been achieved since alkali metal–CO2 batteries were invented, especially in terms of development of new electrode materials, and yet, research is lacking on the underlying mechanisms of the systems. This is the first typical review focusing on the electrochemical mechanisms of metal–CO2 batteries that summarizes the current understanding of and provides insights into the thermodynamic reaction pathways, the kinetic characteristics, and the crucial factors determining the reaction mechanisms in alkali metal–CO2 batteries. The review starts with the fundamental concepts of alkali metal–CO2 batteries, followed by a comprehensive discussion of the working mechanisms on cathodes and anodes. Moreover, the operation mechanisms of state‐of‐the‐art electrolytes, including liquid and (quasi‐)solid‐state electrolytes, are also described. Finally, we identify the unsolved problems in current alkali metal–CO2 batteries and propose potential topics for future research.

With the urgent demand for clean energy, rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs) are attracting increasing attention. Precious-metal-based electrocatalysts (e.g., commercial Pt/C and IrO2) are reported to be highly active towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Nevertheless, the limited catalytic kinetics, along with the scarcity of noble metals, still hinder the practical applications of ZABs. Consequently, it is of great importance to explore efficient bifunctional ORR/OER electrocatalysts with abundant reserves. Although iron oxides are considered to have some of the greatest potential as catalysts among the metal oxides, owing to their excellent redox properties, lower toxicity, simple preparation, and natural abundance, their poor electrical conductivity and high agglomeration still limit their development. In this work, we report a special Se quantum dots@ CoFeOx (Se-FeOx-Co) composite material, which exhibits outstanding bifunctional catalytic properties. And the potential gap between ORR and OER is low at 0.87 V. In addition, the ZAB based on Se-FeOx-Co achieves a satisfactory open-circuit voltage (1.46 V) along with an operation durability over 800 min. This research explores an effective strategy to fabricate iron oxide-based bifunctional catalysts, which contributes to the future design of related materials.

A novel device is constructed to study the localized corrosion susceptibility of 2024 aluminum alloy at a dynamic seawater/air interface. Corrosion in three distinct regions are identified: full immersion region, seawater/air interfacial region (alternant wet/dry region), and atmosphere region. The corrosion process in the interfacial region over time was studied by EIS and the corrosion product was characterized by SEM. Experimental results revealed that, a layer of intense and uniform corrosion product was formed on the seawater/air interfacial region, due to the oxygen enrichment in that region. Pitting corrosion was more severe in the full immersion region than that in the seawater/air interface, as verified by a lower charge transfer resistance and more severe pitting corrosion and intergranular corrosion extent.

Abstract Background Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that arises at various sites and typically originates from the pleura. Most patients with SFTPs are asymptomatic, unless the tumor is large. Approximately 20% of SFTP cases are malignant. There are few reports on imaging diagnoses and interventional treatments of SFTP. Here, we report a case of a giant SFTP that exhibited malignant behavior and underwent successful resection after embolization of the main supply artery of the tumor. Case presentation We report a clinical case of a giant SFTP in a 66-year-old Chinese female patient complaining of chest tightness and cough for more than 2 months. Ten years ago, the patient had undergone a chest CT scan at a local hospital for cough. Computed tomography (CT) had revealed a mass in the right thoracic region, which was misdiagnosed as a pulmonary abscess by CT-guided biopsy. Therefore, the patient did not receive appropriate/complete treatment at that time. She was hospitalized again, because CT showed significant enlargement of the right thoracic mass, which caused her obvious symptoms of discomfort. The pathological results of CT-guided biopsy at our hospital confirmed SFTP. Considering the large size of the tumor and the rich blood supply, some of the main blood vessels were treated with embolization before surgical resection. A large tumor, about 23 cm × 16 cm × 15 cm in size, was then successfully removed by thoracic surgery. The diagnosis of malignant SFTP was confirmed by surgical pathology and immunohistochemistry. Conclusion Imaging findings of SFTPs are not characteristic, especially when a tumor is large, the diagnosis is difficult, and the final diagnosis still depends on histological and immunohistochemical examinations. The two-stage surgical treatment described here, which involves first embolization of the main supplying artery of the large tumor and then complete surgical resection, is effective and safe for SFTPs. Whether needle biopsy or vascular embolization is performed, intervention plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with SFTPs.

A low Gilbert damping factor is crucial for emerging magneto-acoustic devices. In current work, angle-dependent and temperature-dependent Gilbert damping of magnetostrictive FeCoSiB thin films have been investigated using electron spin resonance (ESR) and vector network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR) techniques, respectively. A very low Gilbert damping factor ∼0.0038 was measured with in-plane magnetic fields at room temperature. Temperature-dependent VNA-FMR results between 10 K and 300 K exhibit a conductivity-like damping feature, which can be attributed to the spin-orbital coupling dominantly controlled by the intraband scattering. Our results clearly indicate that highly magnetostrictive or piezomagnetic film does not necessarily have a high intrinsic damping factor.

Abstract The development of cost‐effective and highly efficient electrocatalysts to accelerate distinct electrochemical reactions is essential to help the industry to achieve a low‐carbon footprint. Single‐atom alloys (SAAs) with the characteristics of unique electronic structures, well‐defined active sites, and maximum atom utilization demonstrate promising potential to replace traditional noble metal catalysts. SAAs are expected to tailor the adsorption properties of reaction species, thus promoting electrocatalytic behaviors. Herein, representative synthetic strategies including wet chemistry, galvanic replacement, dealloying, and atomic layer deposition are introduced, followed by a summary of applications of SAAs in hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, carbon dioxide reduction reaction, and ethanol electro‐oxidation to provide an in‐depth understanding of the structure–activity relationship. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in this emerging field of SAAs are discussed.

Background and Aim. Significantly reduced serum ceruloplasmin (Cp) is the most important clue in the diagnosis of Wilson’s disease (WD) and is well known to clinicians. The false increase in Cp in some WD patients, which overlaps with that in non-WD liver disease patients, decreases the diagnostic accuracy. The aims of our study were to understand the factors associated with Cp normalisation in WD patients and identify these WD patients using usual predictors. Methods. We retrospectively screened individuals with serum Cp ≥ 140 mg/L from 1032 WD patients who were hospitalised for the first time. Logistic regression analyses were performed in a case-control study between the WD cohort and another liver disease cohort to explore the independent risk factors for WD diagnosis and establish a regression model to identify them. The follow-up medical records of the WD cohort were subjected to mixed-effects model analysis in a longitudinal study to discover factors associated with Cp normalisation. Results. Eighty-six WD patients and their 353 medical records and another 98 non-WD liver disease patients were included in the present study. Cp normalisation was significantly associated with the copper burden and liver function indexes, such as urinary copper, γ-glutamyltransferase, and albumin (p≤0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that age and serum creatinine (p≤0.001) were independent risk factors associated with WD. The AUC value of the regression model in the total cohort was 0.926 (p≤0.001). At a cutoff value of ≥0.617 and ≥−1, the positive and negative predictive values were both 90.8% for WD. Conclusion. Increased serum Cp in WD patients is related to excessive copper burden and hepatic injury, and common tests can effectively distinguish WD patients from other liver injury patients.

Background: Zinc-air battery (ZAB) is a promising candidate for energy storage, but the short cycle life severely restricts the wider practical applications. Up to date, no consensus on the dominant factors affecting ZABs cycle life was reached to help understanding how to prolong the ZAB’s cycle life. Here, a series of replacement experiments based on the ZAB were conducted to confirm the pivotal factors that influence the cycle life at different depths of discharge (DOD).Method: The morphology and composition of the components of the battery were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical titration analyses.Result: SEM images and XRD results revealed that the failure of the zinc anode gradually deepens with the increase of DOD, while the performance degradation of the tricobalt tetroxide/Carbon Black (Co3O4/CB) air cathode depends on the operating time. The concentration of CO32− depends on the charge/discharge cycle time. The replacement experiments results show that the dominant factors affecting the ZAB’s cycle life is the reduction of active sites on the surface of Co3O4/CB air cathode at a shallow DOD, while that is the carbonation of the electrolyte at a deep DOD. The reduction of active sites on the surface of Co3O4/CB air cathode is caused by the coverage of K2CO3 precipitated by carbonation of the electrolyte, suggesting that the carbonation of the alkaline electrolyte limits ZAB’s cycle life.Conclusion: Therefore, this work not only further discloses the failure mechanism of ZAB, but also provides some feasible guidance to design a ZAB with along cycle life.

The effect of compressive stress on cavitation erosion-corrosion behavior of nickel-aluminum bronze alloy was investigated, and the results showed that the alloy exhibited selective phase corrosion of eutectoid “α + κiii” and its destruction was aggravated with more cavitation mass loss up to 1.74 times of the specimen without stress. It was mainly owing to the enhanced corrosion-induced erosion caused by compressive stress, which led to lattice distortion of the alloy and the resulting accelerated selective phase corrosion with increasing surface roughness, and then intensified the synergistic effect of electrochemical corrosion and mechanical erosion.

Self-incompatible pitaya varieties have low fruit-setting rates under natural conditions, leading to higher production costs and hindering industrial prosperity. Through transcriptome sequencing, we obtained the 36,900 longest transcripts (including 9167 new transcripts) from 60 samples of flowers. Samples were collected pre- and post-pollination (at 0 h, 0.5 h, 2 h, 4 h, and 12 h) from two varieties of pitaya (self-compatible Jindu No. 1 and self-incompatible Cu Sha). Using the RNA-Seq data and comparison of reference genomes, we annotated 28,817 genes in various databases, and 1740 genes were optimized in their structure for annotation. There were significant differences in the expression of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the pitaya stigmas under different pollination types, especially at the late post-pollination stage, where the expression of protease genes increasedal significantly under cross-pollination. We identified DEGs involved in the ribosomal, ubiquitination-mediated, and phyto-signaling pathways that may be involved in pitaya SI regulation. Based on the available transcriptome data and bioinformatics analysis, we tentatively identified HuS-RNase2 as a candidate gynogenetic S gene in the pitaya GSI system.

The electrolyte carbonation and the resulting air electrode plugging are the primary factors limiting the cycle life of aqueous alkaline zinc–air batteries (ZABs). In this work, calcium ion (Ca2+) additives were introduced into the electrolyte and the separator to resolve the above issues. Galvanostatic charge–discharge cycle tests were carried out to verify the effect of Ca2+ on electrolyte carbonation. With the modified electrolyte and separator, the cycle life of ZABs was improved by 22.2% and 24.7%, respectively. Ca2+ was introduced into the ZAB system to preferentially react with CO32− rather than K+ and then precipitated granular CaCO3 prior to K2CO3, which was deposited on the surface of the Zn anode and air cathode to form a flower-like CaCO3 layer, thereby prolonging its cycle life.

Hydrogen evolution reaction and dendrite growth seriously break the Zn plating/stripping process at the electrolyte/electrode interface, causing the instability of the Zn anode of aqueous zinc ion batteries. To improve the Zn anode stability and reversibility, we report a new electrolyte additive of aqueous electrolyte with the hydrophobic group. This interfacial hydrophobicity maximises the exclusion of free water from the Zn anode surface, which blocks water erosion and reduces interfacial side reactions. Thus, in an optimal 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte with 2 g·L−1 Tween-85, the hydrogen evolution reaction and other water-induced undesired reactions can be suppressed, which greatly improves the cycling stability and Coulombic efficiency (CE) of Zn plating/stripping process. The stable cycle time of the Zn//Zn symmetric battery reaches over 1300 h, especially at a high current density and a high areal capacity (more than 650 h at 5 mA·cm−2, 5 mAh·cm−2). The average Coulomb efficiency (CE) of Zn//Ti asymmetric cell achieves 98.11% after 300 cycles. The capacity retention rate of Zn//MnO2 full battery is up to 88.6% after 1000 cycles.

ObjectiveGestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has been linked to subsequent overall cardiovascular diseases. However, evidence on the associations of GDM with type-specific cardiovascular diseases is lacking, and findings on the potential impact of type 2 diabetes on the associations are not consistent. This study aimed to explore the associations between GDM and the risks of type-specific cardiovascular diseases.MethodsData were from 12,025 women (≥20 years) who had delivered at least one live birth in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2007–2018. GDM history and type-specific cardiovascular diseases including coronary heart disease (CHD), heart failure and stroke were defined by self-report. We also combined our results with those from previously related publications on the associations between GDM and risks of type-specific cardiovascular diseases with a random-effect model.ResultsCompared with women without GDM, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) were 1.82 (1.21–2.72) for CHD, 1.43 (0.80–2.53) for heart failure, and 1.19 (0.76–1.86) for stroke among women with a history of GDM. Type 2 diabetes was associated with 43.90, 67.44, and 63.16% of the excess odds of CHD, heart failure and stroke associated with GDM, respectively. Combining results from this study with those from previously related studies yielded odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 1.81 (1.60–2.05) for CHD (12 studies, 7,615,322 participants, I2= 72.6%), 1.66 (1.25–2.21) for heart failure (5 studies, 4,491,665 participants, I2= 88.6%), and 1.25 (1.07–1.46) for cerebrovascular disease (9 studies, 6,090,848 participants, I2= 77.8%).ConclusionsGDM showed stronger associations with coronary heart diseases and heart failure than cerebrovascular disease, and the excess risks are attributable, in part, to type 2 diabetes.

Abstract Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) play important roles in energy generation and storage field, such as fuel cell, flow battery, however, a major barrier in the way of large‐scale application is the high cost of membranes (e.g., Nafion membranes price generally exceeds USD$ 200 m−2). The membrane‐less technology is one of the promising approaches to solve the problem and thus has attracted much attention and been explored in a variety of research paths. This review introduces one of the representative membrane‐less battery types, Biphasic membrane‐less redox batteries that eliminate the IEMs according to the principle of solvent immiscibility and realizes the phase splitting in a thermodynamically stable state. It is systematically classified and summarizes their performances as well as the problems they are suffering from, and then several effective solutions are proposed based on the modification of electrodes and electrolytes. Finally, special attention is given to the challenges and prospects of Biphasic membrane‐less redox batteries, which could contribute to the development of membrane‐less batteries.

ObjectiveThe association between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and the risk of arthritis has not been reported. GDM increases the risk of long-term complications including diabetes and metabolic syndrome that are positively associated with the risk of arthritis. This study aimed to explore the association between GDM and the risk of arthritis.MethodsWomen (age ≥ 20 years) who had delivered at least one live birth were included from the 2007 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cohort (N = 11,997). Patients who had a history of GDM and arthritis were identified by in-home interview. Subgroup analyses were conducted by arthritis types and status of obesity, current diabetes, metabolic syndrome, smoking, alcohol drinking, and physical activity.ResultsGDM was associated with increased odds of arthritis [multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval): 1.31 (1.06–1.62)], and the result was similar in sensitivity analysis with further adjustment for metabolic syndrome [1.30 (1.05–1.60)]. In subgroup analyses, GDM was associated with increased odds of osteoarthritis [1.47 (1.05–2.06)], while no association was observed with rheumatoid arthritis [1.04 (0.69–1.57)] and other types [1.26 (0.94–1.68)]. GDM was associated with increased odds of arthritis in women without metabolic syndrome [1.34 (1.00–1.78)] and diabetes [1.35 (1.03–1.76)], in obese individuals [1.64 (1.24–2.16)], current/former smokers [1.43 (1.05–1.95)], and current drinkers [1.76 (1.00–3.14)], and in individuals engaging in higher levels of physical activity [1.53 (1.06–2.20)].ConclusionsGDM was associated with increased odds of arthritis, and the association was independent of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

MXenes have emerged as potential antimicrobial materials. Here, the authors report on the creation of a Schottky junction to increase the charge separation between MXenes and semiconductor to increase photodynamic creation of reactive oxygen species under near infrared irradiation for antibacterial purposes.

The heat released from an aluminum-air battery has a great effect on its performance and operating life during the discharge process. A theoretical model was proposed to evaluate the resulting thermal effect, and the generated heat was divided into the following sources: anodic aluminum oxidation reaction, cathodic oxygen reduction reaction, heat production against the battery internal resistance, and hydrogen-evolution reaction. Quantitative analysis was conducted on each part, showing that all heat production sources increased with discharge current density. It should be noted that the heat caused by hydrogen evolution accounted for the most, up to 90%. Furthermore, the regulation strategy for inhibiting hydrogen evolution was developed by addition of hybrid additives to the electrolyte, and the hydrogen-evolution rate was greatly reduced by more than 50% as was the generated heat. This research has important guidance for the thermal effect analysis of aluminum–air batteries, together with control of the thermal management process by inhibiting hydrogen evolution, thus promoting their practical application.

Abstract Background Polyglucosan body myopathy 1 (PGBM1) is a type of glycogen storage disease that can cause skeletal muscle myopathy and cardiomyopathy with or without immunodeficiency due to a pathogenic mutation in the RBCK1 gene. PGBM1 has been reported in only 14 European and American families, and no cognitive impairment phenotype was reported. Its prevalence in Asia is unknown. Case presentation: We report a Chinese boy with teenage onset of skeletal muscle myopathy and mild cognitive impairment. Whole-exome sequencing analysis identified a homozygous missense mutation in RBCK1 (c.1411G > A:p.Glu471Lys). A muscle biopsy indicated the accumulation of periodic acid-Schiff-positive material, which could be ubiquitinated by immunohistochemistry with an anti-ubiquitin antibody. In skeletal muscle tissue, HOIL-1 and HOIP protein levels were lower than those in the control, confirming the phenotype of an RBCK1 mutation. MRI revealed abnormal cerebral white matter signals. Immune system and cardiac examination found no abnormalities. The patient was diagnosed with PGBM1 with no effective treatment. Conclusions This case from China with a novel homozygous missense mutation in RBCK1 extends the phenotypic spectrum and geographical distribution of PGBM 1, which may cause cerebral white matter changes and cognitive impairment.

Abstract Aqueous zinc-based batteries (AZBs) attract tremendous attention due to the abundant and rechargeable zinc anode. Nonetheless, the requirement of high energy and power densities raises great challenge for the cathode development. Herein we construct an aqueous zinc ion capacitor possessing an unrivaled combination of high energy and power characteristics by employing a unique dual-ion adsorption mechanism in the cathode side. Through a templating/activating co-assisted carbonization procedure, a routine protein-rich biomass transforms into defect-rich carbon with immense surface area of 3657.5 m2 g−1 and electrochemically active heteroatom content of 8.0 at%. Comprehensive characterization and DFT calculations reveal that the obtained carbon cathode exhibits capacitive charge adsorptions toward both the cations and anions, which regularly occur at the specific sites of heteroatom moieties and lattice defects upon different depths of discharge/charge. The dual-ion adsorption mechanism endows the assembled cells with maximum capacity of 257 mAh g−1 and retention of 72 mAh g−1 at ultrahigh current density of 100 A g−1 (400 C), corresponding to the outstanding energy and power of 168 Wh kg−1 and 61,700 W kg−1. Furthermore, practical battery configurations of solid-state pouch and cable-type cells display excellent reliability in electrochemistry as flexible and knittable power sources.

A facile and efficient approach to manufacturing optical devices with a plane graphene-coupled microfiber structure is proposed—attaching the optical microfiber onto a monolayer graphene-coated polydimethylsiloxane substrate. Such devices exhibit strong light–graphene interaction via the evanescent fields of the guided light in microfibers and show evident optical polarization and polarization-dependent saturable absorption effect. When the monolayer graphene with propagation distance is 2.5 mm, and the microfiber diameter is 3.9 μm, the polarization extinction ratio can reach up to 31.0 dB with the light wavelength at 1550 nm. The transmission in TM modes could be increased continuously by increasing the input power of light at 980 nm. The transmission with 3 and 10 dB modulation depths in TM modes could be achieved via 980 nm pump power of 15.1 and 66.1 mW, respectively, which is advantageous over unpolarized graphene-coupled microfiber devices. The proposed microfiber on graphene structure could efficiently integrate optical waveguides with two-dimensional materials, with great potential applications in optical polarizers, all-optical modulators, mode-locked fiber lasers, and sensors, especially for all-fiber systems.

Objective: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) presents high morbidity and mortality. It was demonstrated that blood-derived vesicles can facilitate ESCC development and transmit regulating signals. However, the molecular mechanism of vesicle miRNA secreted by tumor cells affecting ESCC progression has not been explored.Methods: The mRNA-related signaling pathways and differentially expressed genes were screened out in TCGA dataset. The levels of miRNA-105-5p and SPARCL1 were determined by qRT-PCR. Protein level determination was processed using Western blot. The interaction between the two genes was verified with the dual-luciferase method. A transmission electron microscope was utilized to further identify extracellular vesicles (EVs), and co-culture assay was performed to validate the intake of EVs. In vitro experiments were conducted to evaluate cell function changes in ESCC. A mice tumor formation experiment was carried out to observe tumor growth in vivo.Results: MiRNA-105-5p expression was increased in ESCC, while SPARCL1 was less expressed. MiRNA-105-5p facilitated cell behaviors in ESCC through targeting SPARCL1 and regulating the focal adhesion kinase (FAK)/Akt signaling pathway. Blood-derived external vesicles containing miRNA-105-5p and EVs could be internalized by ESCC cells. Then, miRNA-105-5p could be transferred to ESCC cells to foster tumorigenesis as well as cell behaviors.Conclusion: EV-carried miRNA-105-5p entered ESCC cells and promoted tumor-relevant functions by mediating SPARCL1 and the FAK/Akt signaling pathway, which indicated that the treatment of ESCC via serum EVs might be a novel therapy and that miRNA-105-5p can be a molecular target for ESCC therapy.

ObjectiveThe association between history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and risk of kidney stones has not been reported. GDM increases the risk of long-term complications including diabetes, hypertension and metabolic syndrome, which are risk factors of kidney stones. This study aimed to explore the association between previous GDM and odds of kidney stones.MethodsWomen (age ≥ 20 years) who had delivered at least one live birth were included from the 2007–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cohort (N = 12,003). Patients with kidney stones and history of GDM were identified by in-home interview for all participants. Subgroup analyses were conducted by age, race/ethnicity, postpartum duration and status of hypertension, obesity, current diabetes and metabolic syndrome.ResultsPrevious GDM was positively associated with odds of kidney stones [multivariate-adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval): 1.41 (1.13–1.77)], and the association was stronger with odds of passing 2 or more times of kidney stones [1.72 (1.31–2.26)]. In subgroup analyses, the association between previous GDM and odds of kidney stones was significant in women within 15 years of a pregnancy complicated by GDM [1.54 (1.12–2.11)], in obese participants [1.56 (1.18–2.06)], in women without hypertension [1.49 (1.07–2.08)], current diabetes [1.38 (1.02–1.87)] and metabolic syndrome [1.56 (1.10–2.19)], in women of Non-Hispanic White [1.59 (1.15–2.18)] and in women aged more than 50 year [1.45 (1.02–2.07)].ConclusionsPrevious GDM was positively associated with odds of kidney stones, and the association was independent of type 2 diabetes, hypertension and metabolic syndrome.

Abstract Rechargeable zinc‐air batteries (ZABs) have attracted much attention as the next‐generation energy conversion and storage devices due to the abundance and environmental friendliness of zinc (Zn) for anode materials, as well as the safety and low cost of aqueous electrolytes. However, rational design of nonprecious and low‐cost integrated air cathode materials with a desirable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic performance remains a great challenge for the commercialization of rechargeable ZABs. In previous research studies, various cost‐effective carbon‐supported electrocatalysts and light‐weight carbon‐based current collectors for air cathodes have been developed, showing vast potential in the application of carbon‐based materials. To improve the bifunctional performance and integration of air cathodes, efforts with respect to the design of morphology, defects, and synergistic effects of carbon‐based materials have been made. In this perspective, the general understanding of the air cathode construction and the battery working mechanism is discussed. The recent progress in the design of carbon‐based materials for air cathodes in rechargeable ZABs is summarized. Several possible future research directions and the expected development trends are also discussed, aiming to facilitate the commercialization of advanced rechargeable ZABs in our life.

Highlights Nanomaterials-based nickel foam (NF-C/CoS/NiOOH) with nanosheets structure and core–shell heterostructure was prepared for the first time by a facile and fast synthesis strategy of Joule-heating and water soaking treatment. The formation mechanism of nanosheets structure was proposed that the driving force of nanosheets structure generation was the metastable nickel activated by thermal shock, and the CoS could induce the NiOOH nanosheets growing continually. NF-C/CoS/NiOOH exhibited good oxygen evolution, hydrogen evolution, and overall water splitting performance. Abstract Nanomaterials based on nickel foam (NF) have been widely applied in energy conversion and storage field. Traditional synthesis methods such as hydrothermal method which is dangerous and high cost limited the scalable developments. Herein, we report a fast, simple, and low-cost synthesis method of nanomaterials based on NF by Joule-heating and water soaking treatment. Thin carbon-coated CoS on NF (NF-C/CoS) was synthesized by Joule-heating for a few seconds with rapid cooling. And then, NF-C/CoS/NiOOH with core–shell heterostructure was fabricated by soaking treatment of NF-C/CoS in water on which NiOOH nanosheets grew spontaneously. The formation mechanism is proposed that the coordination complex precursor converts into C/CoS on NF driven by Joule-heating, and the nickel on the surface of NF is activated to form metastable nickel simultaneously. The metastable nickel reacting with water leads to the formation of NiOOH, and the induction of CoS makes NiOOH grow continuously. This synthesis technology provides a new route to manufacture NF-based nanostructures, and the as-fabricated NF-C/CoS/NiOOH exhibits great potential as electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract A fiber-optic shape sensing based on 7-core fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The investigations are presented for two-dimensional and three-dimensional shape reconstruction by distinguishing bending and twisting of 7-core optical fiber with FBGs. The curvature and bending orientation can be calculated by acquiring FBG wavelengths from any two side cores among the six outer cores. And the shape sensing in three-dimensional (3D) space is computed by analytic geometry theory. The experiments corresponding of two-dimensional (2D) and 3D shape sensing are demonstrated and conducted to verify the theoretical principles. The resolution of curvature is about 0.1m−1 for 2D measuring. The error of angle in shape reconstruction is about 1.89° for 3D measuring. The proposed sensing technique based on 7-core FBGs is promising of high feasibility, stability, and repeatability, especially for the distinguishing ability on the bending orientation due to the six symmetrical cores on the cross-section.

Background. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease, a hallmark by the formation of misfolded and aggregated α-synuclein proteins. The expression of potential microRNA (miRNA) candidates isolated from serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) exosomes of PD patients was assessed for their diagnostic value and their potential role as biomarkers for PD was explored. In this study, we characterize the expression level of miRNAs in the exosomes of blood sera and cerebrospinal fluid and explore their potential role as biomarkers for PD. Materials and Methods. A total of 209 patients having an onset of PD, along with 60 neurodegenerative (ND) disorders and 50 healthy controls were enrolled. Blood samples and CSF samples were collected and exosomes were isolated. The isolated exosomes were characterized using CD63 detection and exosomal RNA was extracted. Serum miRNA profiling was carried out by synthesizing cDNA from the purified RNA and miRNA transcripts were determined by qRT-PCR using SYBR Green PremixScript. microRNA profiling strategy was employed for extracting the exosomal miRNAs from the exosomes. Results. Five common miRNAs viz. miR-151a-5p, miR-24, mir-485-5p, mir-331-5p, and mir-214 were found to be upregulated with statistical significance in both the serum exosome and CSF exosomes. The investigation revealed that serum and CSF exosomal miRNA molecules are definitive biomarkers for PD with proper specificity and sensitivity. Conclusions. The significant level of miR-151a-5p, miR-24, mir-485-5p, mir-331-5p, and mir-214 was observed in the serum and CSF which may be established as a biomarker for the diagnosis of PD.

Seawater has obvious resource reserve advantages compared to fresh water, and so the huge potential advantages for large-scale electrolysis of hydrogen production has been paid more attention to; but at the same time, electrolysis of seawater requires more stable and active catalysts to deal with seawater corrosion problems. Graphene-based materials are very suitable as composite supports for catalysts due to their high electrical conductivity, specific surface area, and porosity. Therefore, the review introduces the problems faced by seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production and the various catalysts performance. Among them, the advantages of catalysis of graphene-based catalysts and the methods of enhancement the catalytic performance of graphene are emphasized. Finally, the development direction of composite catalysts is prospected, hoping to provide guidance for the preparation of more efficient electrocatalysts for seawater electrolysis.

Potassium–sulfur batteries (KSBs) are regarded as a promising large-scale energy storage technology, owing to the high theoretical specific capacity and intrinsically low cost. However, the commercialization of KSBs is hampered by the low sulfur utilization and notorious shuttle effect. Herein, we employ a porosity engineering strategy to design nitrogen-rich carbon foam as an efficient sulfur host. The tremendous micropores magnify the chemical interaction between sulfur species and the polar nitrogen functionalities decorated carbon surface, which significantly improve the sulfur utilization and conversion. Meanwhile, the abundant mesopores provide ample spaces, accommodating the large volume changes of sulfur upon reversible potassation. Resultantly, the constructed sulfur cathode delivers an ultrahigh initial reversible capacity of 1470 mAh g−1 (87.76% of theoretical capacity) and a superior rate capacity of 560 mAh g−1 at 2 C. Reaching the K2S phase in potassiation is the essential reason for obtaining the ultrahigh capacity. Nonetheless, systematic kinetics analyses demonstrate that the K2S involved depotassiation deteriorates the charge kinetics. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the nitrogen-rich micropore surface facilitated the sulfur reduction for K2S but created a higher energy barrier for the K2S decomposition, which explained the discrepancy in kinetics modification effect produced by the porosity engineering.

Abstract Rational design of bifunctional efficient electrocatalysts for both oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is desirable—while highly challenging—for development of rechargeable metal–air batteries. Herein, an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst is designed and fabricated by encapsulating Co nanoparticles in interconnected N‐doped hollow porous carbon nanofibers (designated as Co@N‐C/PCNF) using an ultrafast high‐temperature shock technology. Benefiting from the synergistic effect and intrinsic activity of the CoNC moiety, as well as porous structure of carbon nanofibers, the Co@N‐C/PCNF composite shows high bifunctional electrocatalytic activities for both OER (289 mV at 10 mA cm−2) and ORR (half‐wave potential of 0.85 V). The CoNC moiety in the composite can modulate the local environmental and electrical structure of the catalysts, thus optimizing the adsorption/desorption kinetics and decreasing the reaction barriers for promoting the reversible oxygen electrocatalysis. Co@N‐C/PCNF‐based aqueous Zn–air batteries (AZAB) provide high power density of 292 mW cm−2, and the assembled flexible ZAB can power wearable devices.

Abstract With the low redox potential of −3.04 V (vs SHE) and ultrahigh theoretical capacity of 3862 mAh g−1, lithium metal has been considered as promising anode material. However, lithium metal battery has ever suffered a trough in the past few decades due to its safety issues. Over the years, the limited energy density of the lithium‐ion battery cannot meet the growing demands of the advanced energy storage devices. Therefore, lithium metal anodes receive renewed attention, which have the potential to achieve high‐energy batteries. In this review, the history of the lithium anode is reviewed first. Then the failure mechanism of the lithium anode is analyzed, including dendrite, dead lithium, corrosion, and volume expansion of the lithium anode. Further, the strategies to alleviate the lithium anode issues in recent years are discussed emphatically. Eventually, remaining challenges of these strategies and possible research directions of lithium‐anode modification are presented to inspire innovation of lithium anode.
