Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global public health crisis. Often repetitive and occurring over prolonged periods of time, IPV puts survivors at high risk of brain injury (BI). Mental health concerns are highly prevalent both among individuals who have experienced IPV and those who have experienced BI, yet the interrelatedness and complexity of these three challenges when experienced together is poorly understood. This qualitative study explored care provision for IPV survivors with BI (IPV-BI) and mental health concerns from the perspectives of both survivors and providers. Methods: This qualitative interpretive description study was part of a broader research project exploring employment, mental health, and COVID-19 implications for survivors of IPV-BI. Participants (N = 24), including survivors and service providers, participated in semi-structured group and individual interviews between October 2020 and February 2021. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. Findings: Four themes were developed from interview findings: 1) identifying BI and mental health as contributing components to survivors' experiences is critical to getting appropriate care; 2) supporting survivors involves a "toolbox full of strategies" and a flexible approach; 3) connecting and collaborating across sectors is key; and 4) underfunding and systemic barriers hinder access to care. Finally, we share recommendations from participants to better support IPV survivors. Conclusions: Identifying both BI and mental health concerns among IPV survivors is critical to providing appropriate supports. Survivors of IPV experiencing BI and mental health concerns benefit from a flexible and collaborative approach to care; health and social care systems should be set up to support these collaborative approaches. Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global public health crisis, with physical violence leaving IPV survivors at high risk of brain injury (BI). Both BI and IPV have significant physical, psychological, cognitive, and social impacts, including a high risk of mental health concerns, yet there is limited exploration of IPV survivors' experiences with BI and mental health. This study aimed to explore the BI- and mental health-related needs and experiences of IPV survivors from the perspectives of survivors and service providers with the objective of developing knowledge translation materials to raise awareness and support survivors and service providers in addressing these concerns. Methods: This qualitative interpretive description study involved 19 semi-structured interviews and two focus group discussions (2–3 participants each) with 24 participants including IPV survivors experiencing BI and mental health concerns as well as IPV, mental health, and BI service providers between October 2020 and February 2021. Three screening questions were used to identify probable BI among survivors. Participants across groups were an average of 48.5±12.7 years old and were predominantly cisgender women (96%), of European origin (75%), with a university degree (71%). Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. Findings: Across interviews, participants spoke about IPV, BI, and mental health as being complex and interrelated experiences that have impacts across the survivor's life and extend well beyond the abusive relationship. Because of the underrecognized nature of BI in IPV, finding and accessing care requires persistence that survivors spoke of as being like "a full-time job." The benefit of making meaningful connections, particularly with other survivors, was highlighted. Conclusions: Recognition of BI as a contributing factor shaping the lived experience of IPV survivors; acknowledgement that the impacts of IPV, BI, and mental health are far reaching and long lasting; and reducing barriers to finding and accessing appropriate care are critical to better supporting IPV survivors with BI and mental health concerns. Clinicians should consider BI and its lingering impacts among the IPV survivors with whom they work. Health and social policy that supports integration of care and the reduction of unnecessary barriers should be a priority. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rising rates of unionization in university settings suggest that campus labour disputes are likely to become an increasingly relevant issue. The research question in the current analysis asked which factors contributed to students' perception of fair treatment following a university labour disruption. A longitudinal survey of students' experiences was conducted before, during, and following a 12-week strike by teaching assistants and contract faculty at a large Canadian university. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that students' pre-strike satisfaction with their academic program contributed to a perception of post-strike fairness. The more students' plans had been affected by the strike, the greater the reduction in perceived fairness. Post-strike fairness increased significantly the more students were satisfied with course remediation and the more they felt they had a faculty member to turn to following the strike. Interestingly, neither students' levels of financial concern, nor their attitudes toward the strike, predicted perceived fairness. Implications for addressing students' concerns in the wake of an academic labour dispute are discussed. (Contains 5 tables and 2 notes.)

Objective: A scoping review of studies published in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic focused on individuals with pre-existing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and specified stressor-related disorders, with the objective of mapping the research conducted. Eligibility criteria: (1) direct study of individuals with pre-existing depressive, anxiety, and/or specified stressor-related (i.e., posttraumatic stress, acute stress) disorders/issues; (2) focus on mental health-related pandemic effects, and; (3) direct study of mental health symptoms related to depression, anxiety, or psychological distress. Sources of evidence: Database-specific subject headings and natural language keywords were searched in Medline, Embase, APA PsycInfo, and Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) up to March 3, 2021. Review of potentially relevant studies was conducted by two independent reviewers and proceeded in two stages: (1) title and abstract review, and; (2) full paper review. Data charting: Study details (i.e., location, design and methodology, sample or population, outcome measures, and key findings) were extracted from included studies by one reviewer and confirmed by the Principal Investigator. Results: 66 relevant articles from 26 countries were identified. Most studies adopted a cross-sectional design and were conducted via online survey. About half relied on general population samples, with the remainder assessing special populations, primarily mental health patients. The most commonly reported pre-existing category of disorders or symptoms was depression, followed closely by anxiety. Most studies included depressive and anxiety symptoms as outcome measures and demonstrated increased vulnerability to mental health symptoms among individuals with a pre-existing mental health issue. Conclusion: These findings suggest that improved mental health supports are needed during the pandemic and point to future research needs, including reviews of other diagnostic categories and reviews of research published in subsequent years of the pandemic. The current review presents both postulated and empirically tested consequences of university unionization and labor strikes on the North American institution's administration, faculty, and students. The review explores the impact of collective bargaining on employee working conditions including job security, academic freedom, university governance, and due process. More importantly, this review examines the much neglected issue of organizational work relationships in a unionized academic environment. The relationships discussed include those between faculty members, between the faculty and administration, between the faculty and the university as an institution, and between the faculty and their union. The threat of unionization and labor strikes to the professor-student or mentor-mentee relationship has been a central concern of those opposed to graduate student unions, and this issue is also addressed here. The text concludes with the identification of potential areas for future research.

The article discusses the results of a study on the impact of risk factors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence of anxiety symptoms in Canada. The mu-opioid receptor (MOR) mediates the rewarding properties of many psychoactive drugs and is an important target in the treatment of addictions. Functional interactions between the opioid and endocannabinoid systems are established and have been hypothesized to contribute to the effects of cannabis. We investigated associations between three single nucleotide polymorphisms in the MOR gene OPRM1 (rs1799971, rs2281617, and rs510769) and subjective responses to smoked cannabis. Fifty-two regular cannabis users (1-4 days/week) were given a cannabis cigarette (12.5% THC) and rated their subjective responses on visual analog scales at baseline and at multiple time points after smoking. Blood samples were collected for THC quantification. There was a significant impact of the intronic variant rs510769 on subjective cannabis effects and THC blood levels. The influence of this gene variant may thus be mediated by pharmacodynamics and/or pharmacokinetic factors. We provide novel evidence that variability in OPRM1 contributes to individual responses to cannabis and may affect risk of cannabis use disorder. Research has shown that tobacco users have an increased risk of collisions compared to nonsmokers. Studies from 1967 through 2013 documented a crude relative risk of collision involvement of about 1.5 among smokers compared to nonsmokers. In January 2009, in response to concerns about the health risks associated with potentially high concentrations of secondhand smoke resulting from smoking in vehicles, the provincial government in Ontario, Canada, introduced legislation restricting smoking in vehicles where children and adolescents are present. We examined the association between reported smoking and involvement in a motor vehicle collision in a large representative sample of adult drivers in Ontario, Canada, from 2002 and 2016, with particular focus on 2002-2008 and 2010-2016, periods before and after the legislation. Data are based on the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Monitor. Among licensed drivers, prevalence of self-reported collision involvement within the past year for 2002-2008 was 9.39% among those who currently smoked compared to 7.08% of nonsmokers. Following implementation of the legislation, for 2010-2016, the prevalence of collisions for smokers was 7.01% and for nonsmokers was 6.02%. The overall difference for both smokers and nonsmokers between the two time periods was statistically significant; however, the difference between the two groups for the pre-legislation period was significant even after adjusting for potential confounders, while post legislation the difference was not significant. Prior to the legislation, the prevalence of collision was higher among smokers than nonsmokers; following the introduction of the legislation the prevalence was similar for the two groups.
