Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The tagged quasi-free $np \to np\pi^+\pi^-$ reaction has been studied experimentally with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI at a deuteron incident beam energy of 1.25 GeV/nucleon ($\sqrt s \sim$ 2.42 GeV/c for the quasi-free collision). For the first time, differential distributions for $\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ production in $np$ collisions have been collected in the region corresponding to the large transverse momenta of the secondary particles. The invariant mass and angular distributions for the $np\rightarrow np\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ reaction are compared with different models. This comparison confirms the dominance of the $t$-channel with $\Delta\Delta$ contribution. It also validates the changes previously introduced in the Valencia model to describe two-pion production data in other isospin channels, although some deviations are observed, especially for the $\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum. The extracted total cross section is also in much better agreement with this model. Our new measurement puts useful constraints for the existence of the conjectured dibaryon resonance at mass M$\sim$ 2.38 GeV and with width $\Gamma\sim$ 70 MeV. more...

- Abstract
Transition metal diboride thin films are promising functional materials for their outstanding mechanical properties and thermal stability. By combining experiment and simulations, we discuss angular distribution of the sputtered species, their scattering in the gas phase, re-sputtering and potential evaporation from the grown films for the complex evolution of film compositions, as well as energetic preference for vacancy formation and competing phases as factors for governing the phase constitution. By co-sputtering from two compound targets, we developed phase-pure crystalline (Ta,Al)B2 solid solution thin films and correlate the stoichiometry changes with the evolution of their microstructure, hardness, and elastic modulus. {GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT}, Funding Agencies|Christian Doppler Laboratory for Surface Engineering of High-Performance Components, TU Wien, Austria more...

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Data on inclusive dielectron production are presented for the reaction p+p at 2.2 GeV measured with the High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES). Our results supplement data obtained earlier in this bombarding energy regime by DLS and HADES. The comparison with the 2.09 GeV DLS data is discussed. The reconstructed e+e- distributions are confronted with simulated pair cocktails, revealing an excess yield at invariant masses around 0.5 GeV/c2. Inclusive cross sections of neutral pion and eta production are obtained. more...

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We present measurements of exclusive \pi^{+,0} and \eta\ production in pp reactions at 1.25 GeV and 2.2 GeV beam kinetic energy in hadron and dielectron channels. In the case of \pi^+ and \pi^0, high-statistics invariant-mass and angular distributions are obtained within the HADES acceptance as well as acceptance corrected distributions, which are compared to a resonance model. The sensitivity of the data to the yield and production angular distribution of \Delta(1232) and higher lying baryon resonances is shown, and an improved parameterization is proposed. The extracted cross sections are of special interest in the case of pp \to pp \eta, since controversial data exist at 2.0 GeV; we find \sigma =0.142 \pm 0.022 mb. Using the dielectron channels, the \pi^0 and \eta\ Dalitz decay signals are reconstructed with yields fully consistent with the hadronic channels. The electron invariant masses and acceptance corrected helicity angle distributions are found in good agreement with model predictions., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, to be published in EPJA more...

We present transverse momentum spectra, rapidity distribution and multiplicity of Lambda-hyperons measured with the HADES spectrometer in the reaction Ar(1.76A GeV)+KCl. The yield of Xi- is calculated from our previously reported Xi-/(Lambda+Sigma0) ratio and compared to other strange particle multiplicities. Employing a strangeness balance equation the multiplicities of the yet unmeasured charged Sigma hyperons can be estimated. Finally a statistical hadronization model is used to fit the yields of pi-, K+, K0s, K-, phi, Lambda and Xi-. The resulting chemical freeze-out temperature of T=(76+-2) MeV is compared to the measured slope parameters obtained from fits to the transverse mass distributions of the particles. more...

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We present the transverse momentum spectra and rapidity distributions of $\pi^{-}$ and K$^0_S$ in Ar+KCl reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.756 A GeV measured with the spectrometer HADES. The reconstructed K$^0_S$ sample is characterized by good event statistics for a wide range in momentum and rapidity. We compare the experimental $\pi^{-}$ and K$^0_S$ distributions to predictions by the IQMD model. The model calculations show that K$^0_S$ at low tranverse momenta constitute a particularly well suited tool to investigate the kaon in-medium potential. Our K$^0_S$ data suggest a strong repulsive in-medium K$^0$ potential of about 40 MeV strength., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. C more...

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Results on $\Lambda$p femtoscopy are reported at the lowest energy so far. At a beam energy of 1.76A~GeV, the reaction Ar+KCl was studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18/GSI. A high-statistics and high-purity $\Lambda$ sample was collected, allowing for the investigation of $\Lambda$ p correlations at small relative momenta. The experimental correlation function is compared to corresponding model calculations allowing the determination of the space-time extent of the $\Lambda$p emission source. The $\Lambda$p source radius is found slightly smaller than the pp correlation radius for a similar collis ion system. The present $\Lambda$p radius is significantly smaller than that found for Au+Au/Pb+Pb collisio ns in the AGS, SPS and RHIC energy domains, but larger than that observed for electroproduction from He. Taking into account all available data, we find the $\Lambda$p source radius to increase almost linearly with the number of participants to the power of one-third., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Systematic investigations of dilepton production are performed at the SIS accelerator of GSI with the HADES spectrometer. The goal of this program is a detailed understanding of di-electron emission from hadronic systems at moderate temperatures and densities. New results obtained in HADES experiments focussing on electron pair production in elementary collisions are reported here. They pave the way to a better understanding of the origin of the so-called excess pairs earlier on observed in heavy-ion collisions by the DLS collaboration and lately confirmed in two measurements of the HADES collaboration using C+C and Ar+KCl collisions. Results of these studies are discussed., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, To appear in the proceedings of 5th International Workshop on Critical Point and Onset of Deconfinement (CPOD), Brookhaven, Upton, New York, 8-12 Jun 2009 more...

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We report measurements of electron pair production in elementary p+p and d+p reactions at 1.25 GeV/u with the HADES spectrometer. For the first time, the electron pairs were reconstructed for n+p reactions by detecting the proton spectator from the deuteron breakup. We find that the yield of electron pairs with invariant mass Me+e- > 0.15 GeV/c2 is about an order of magnitude larger in n+p reactions as compared to p+p. A comparison to model calculations demonstrates that the production mechanism is not sufficiently described yet. The electron pair spectra measured in C+C reactions are compatible with a superposition of elementary n+p and p+p collisions, leaving little room for additional electron pair sources in such light collision systems., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, \usepackage{epsfig} more...

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We report first results on a deep sub-threshold production of the doubly strange hyperon $\Xi^-$ in a heavy-ion reaction. At a beam energy of 1.76A GeV the reaction Ar+KCl was studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18/GSI. A high-statistics and high-purity $\Lambda$ sample was collected, allowing for the investigation of the decay channel $\Xi^- \to \Lambda \pi^-$. The deduced $\Xi^-/(\Lambda+\Sigma^0)$ production ratio of $(5.6 \pm 1.2 ^{+1.8}_{-1.7})\cdot 10^{-3}$ is significantly larger than available model predictions., Comment: 4 pages, including 4 figures more...

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We present the results of a study of charged pion production in 12C + 12C collisions at incident beam energies of 1A GeV and 2A GeV using the HADES spectrometer at GSI. The main emphasis of the HADES program is on the dielectron signal from the early phase of the collision. Here, however, we discuss the data with respect to the emission of charged hadrons, specifically the production of pi+- mesons, which are related to neutral pions representing a dominant contribution to the dielectron yield. We have performed the first large-angular range measurement of the distribution of pi+- mesons for the 12C + 12C collision system covering a fairly large rapidity interval. The pion yields, transverse-mass and angular distributions are compared with calculations done within a transport model, as well as with existing data from other experiments. The anisotropy of pion production is systematically analyzed., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, v2 - the text unchanged, only full author list added to METADATA (in v1 only the first author and collaboration name), reference to published paper added more...

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
HADES is a versatile magnetic spectrometer aimed at studying dielectron production in pion, proton and heavy-ion induced collisions. Its main features include a ring imaging gas Cherenkov detector for electron-hadron discrimination, a tracking system consisting of a set of 6 superconducting coils producing a toroidal field and drift chambers and a multiplicity and electron trigger array for additional electron-hadron discrimination and event characterization. A two-stage trigger system enhances events containing electrons. The physics program is focused on the investigation of hadron properties in nuclei and in the hot and dense hadronic matter. The detector system is characterized by an 85% azimuthal coverage over a polar angle interval from 18 to 85 degree, a single electron efficiency of 50% and a vector meson mass resolution of 2.5%. Identification of pions, kaons and protons is achieved combining time-of-flight and energy loss measurements over a large momentum range. This paper describes the main features and the performance of the detector system. more...

By co-sputtering from two compound targets, we developed phase-pure crystalline (Ta,Al)B
2 solid solution thin films and correlate the stoichiometry changes with the evolution of their microstructure, hardness, and elastic modulus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...- Published

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The emission of e+e- pairs from C+C collisions at an incident energy of 1 GeV per nucleon has been investigated. The measured production probabilities, spanning from the pi0-Dalitz to the rho/omega! invariant-mass region, display a strong excess above the cocktail of standard hadronic sources. The bombarding-energy dependence of this excess is found to scale like pion production, rather than like eta production. The data are in good agreement with results obtained in the former DLS experiment., Comment: submitted to Physics Letters B more...

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
We present a novel technique for the investigation of local variations of the critical current density in large bulk superconductors. In contrast to the usual Hall probe scanning technique, the sample is not magnetized as a whole before the scan, but locally by a small permanent magnet, which is fixed near the Hall probe, during the scanning process. The resulting signal can be interpreted as a qualitative measure of the local shielding currents flowing at the surface., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures more...

- Abstract
The Si-based alloying of transition metal diborides is a promising strategy to improve their limited oxidation resistance in high-temperature environments. In this study, we investigate the oxidation resistance of ternary and quaternary Cr-(Mo)-Si-B2-z coatings sputter-deposited from alloyed CrB2/TMSi2 targets (TM = Cr, Mo). The asdeposited Cr-(Mo)-Si-B2-z coatings are stabilized in the single-phased hexagonal AlB2-structure, except the high-Si containing Cr0.26Mo0.11Si0.24B0.39 presenting amorphous character. The Mo-containing Cr-Mo-Si-B2-z films exhibit relatively high hardness compared to their ternary Cr-Si-B2-z counterparts, obtaining up to 26 GPa due to the formation of (Cr,Mo)B-2 solid solutions. The Si-alloying in ternary and quaternary coatings provides oxidation resistance up to 1200 degrees C, owing to the formation of highly protective double-layered scales consisting of SiO2 with a Cr2O3 layer on top, inhibiting oxygen inward diffusion. The quaternary Cr0.31Mo0.07Si0.15B0.47 coating is distinguished by superior oxidation resistance with lower porosity and void formation compared to the ternary Cr0.37Si0.16B0.47. Mo proved to be the key element for the higher stability and enhanced oxidation resistance due to the evolution of the MoSi2 phase at similar to 600 degrees C. This phase formation controls the Si diffusion and mobility within the microstructure, thus reducing the porosity and governing the Si supply to form SiO2 scale. The quaternary Cr0.31Mo0.07Si0.15B0.47 coating maintained an oxidation resistance up to 30 h at 1200 degrees C by forming a 2.5 mu m dense amorphous Si-based oxide scale with a thin Cr2O3 on top. more...

- Abstract
Superlattice structures enable the simultaneous enhancement in hardness (H) and fracture toughness (KIC) of ceramic-like coatings. While a deeper understanding of this effect has been gained for fcc-structured transition metal nitrides (TMN), hardly any knowledge is available for hexagonal diborides (TMB2). Here we show that superlattices can-similarly to nitrides-increase the hardness and toughness of diboride films. For this purpose, we deposited TiB2/WB2 and TiB2/ZrB2 superlattices with different bilayer periods (?) by non-reactive sputtering. Nanoindentation and in-situ microcantilever bending tests yield a distinct H peak for the TiB2/WB2 system (45.5 & PLUSMN; 1.3 GPa for ? = 6 nm) but no increase in KIC related to a difference in shear moduli (112 GPa). Contrary, the TiB2/ZrB2 system shows no peak in H, but for KIC with 3.70 & PLUSMN; 0.26 MPa & BULL;m1/2 at ? = 4 nm originating from differences in lattice spacing (0.14 & ANGS;), hence causing coherent stresses retarding crack growth. more...

- Abstract
The corrosion resistance of cathodic arc evaporated Al0.7Cr0.3_xVxN coatings with a vanadium content up to 22.3 at% has been electrochemically tested in a 0.1 M NaCl-solution. Significant improvement in the open porosity and corrosion rate was observed for coatings with higher V-contents, due to a denser and more refined coating morphology. Further reduction in the open porosity rate was achieved through an annealing step in air at 700 degrees C. Here, the formation of an AlVO4 top-oxide and underlying oxygen-rich V-depletion zone provides additional sealing of the coating surface, whilst reducing the corrosion current density to a final 1.59 x 10_9 A/cm2. more...

Structural imperfections such as nano-columnar tissue phases constitute a morphological design feature in protective thin films. Especially in the rising group of PVD transition metal diborides, excess Boron is known to form nm-sized B-rich precipitations in-between nano-crystalline domains. Here, we focus on super-stoichiometric TiB
2 + z thin films, varying the stoichiometry from TiB2.04 to TiB4.42 (B: 67–82 at.%). The tissue phase fraction and thickness is mainly governed by the B content and corresponding deposition conditions. A decreasing tissue phase width from ≈ 3–1 nm leads to an increasing critical stress intensity factor KIC of ≈ 40%. Tissue phase governed intrinsic fracture toughness (KIC ) of nano-crystalline TiB2 + z films with a maximum of 3.55 ± 0.16 MPa√m for super-hard TiB2.22 . [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...- Published

- Abstract
The exceptional mechanical properties of transition metal carbide coatings are known to be governed by the carbon content and its morphological distribution. Here, we verify the influence of the target peak power density on the chemical composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of NbCx coatings grown by non-reactive high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS). By tuning the pulse parameters, the power density can be increased from 0.11 to 1.48 kW/cm2 leading to a decrease in the C/Nb ratio from 1.52 to 0.99 within the films - proven by combined elastic backscattering and time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis. This decrease in the C/Nb ratio is accompanied by microstructural changes from nanocomposite morphologies with an average grain size of 6.6 +/- 2.5 nm at 0.13 kW/cm2 into more columnar structures with an average column width of 65.2 +/- 18.7 nm at 1.48 kW/cm2. Independent from the C/Nb ratio, all films exhibit a single face-centered cubic structure. The mechanical properties correlate with the enhanced growth behavior dominated by ions at higher peak power densities and the varied C/Nb ratios. A maximum in hardness and fracture toughness of H = 38.7 +/- 3.6 GPa and KIc = 2.78 +/- 0.13 MPa center dot m1/2 (at 3.2 GPa residual compressive stress), is obtained for the nearly stoichiometric NbC coating exhibiting C/Nb ratio of 1.06. more...

- Abstract
Ternary W1-x TaxB2-z is a promising protective coating material possessing enhanced ductile character and phase stability compared to closely related binaries. Here, the oxidation resistance of W1-xTaxB2-z thin films was experimentally investigated at temperatures up to 700 degrees C. Ta alloying in sputter deposited WB2-z coatings led to decelerated oxide scale growth and a changed growth mode from paralinear to a more linear (but retarded) behavior with increasing Ta content. The corresponding rate constants decrease from k(p)* = 6.3.10(-4) mu m(2)/s for WB2-z to k(p)* = 1.1.10(-4) mu m(2)/s for W0.66Ta0.34B2-z as well as k(1) = 2.6.10(-5) mu m/s for TaB2-z, underlined by decreasing scale thicknesses ranging from 1170 nm (WB2-z), over 610 nm (W0.66Ta0.34B2-z) to 320 nm (TaB2-z) after 10 min at 700 degrees C. Dense and adherent scales exhibit an increased tantalum content (columnar oxides), which suppresses the volatile character of tungsten-rich as well as boron oxides, hence being a key-factor for enhanced oxidation resistance. Thus, adding Ta (in the range of x = 0.2-0.3) to a-structured WB2-z does not only positively influence the ductile character and thermal stability but also drastically increases the oxidation resistance. more...

- Abstract
Crystalline (Hf,Ta,Ti,V,Zr)N nitride thin films, with a high-entropy metal-sublattice, were synthesized at 440 degrees C by reactive magnetron sputtering using an equimolar Hf-Ta-Ti-V-Zr-compound target. The coatings are single-phase fcc structured mono-nitrides for N-2/(Ar + N-2) flow-rate-ratios (f(N2)) between 30 and 45%. For higher f(N2) a small fraction of a second phase (next to the fcc matrix) can be detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). All coatings studied (prepared with f(N2) between 30 and 60%) show similar chemical compositions and hardness (H) values between 30.0 and 34.0 GPa with indentation moduli of similar to 460 GPa. Atom probe tomography (APT) indicates a homogenous distribution of all elements within our fcc-(Hf,Ta,Ti,V,Zr)N even after vacuum-annealing at 1300 degrees C. While H decreased from 32.5 to 28.1 GPa by this annealing treatment, the coating is still single-phase fcc structured with a defect density (expressed by XRD and SAED features, transmission electron microscopy contrast, and grain sizes) comparable to the as-deposited state. Only after vacuum-annealing at 1500 degrees C, XRD and APT reveal the formation of hexagonal structured (Ta,V)(2)N. The onset of nitrogen-loss - detected by thermogravimetric analysis - is similar to 1350 degrees C. Based on our results we can conclude that the sluggish diffusion within our fcc-(Hf,Ta,Ti,V,Zr)N warrants the single-phase fcc structure up to 1300 degrees C, although ab initio based calculations would suggest the lower-entropy products [fcc-(Hf,Zr)N, fcc-(Ta,V)N, and fcc-TiN] and [fcc-(Hf,Zr)N and fcc-(Ta,Ti,V)N] to be energetically more stable up to 1302 K. more...

Transition metal diboride-based thin films are promising candidates to replace state-of-the-art protective and functional coating materials due to their unique properties. Here, we focus on hexagonal WB
2-z , showing that the AlB2 structure is stabilized by B vacancies exhibiting its energetic minima at sub-stoichiometric WB1.5 . Nanoindentation reveals super-hardness of 0001 oriented α-WB2-z coatings, linearly decreasing by more than 15 GPa with predominant 10 1 ¯ 1 orientation. This anisotropy is attributed to differences in the generalized stacking fault energy of basal and pyramidal slip systems, highlighting the feasibility of tuning mechanical properties by crystallographic orientation relations. First report of an anisotropic elastoplastic behaviour in super-hard PVD AlB2 structured WB2-z . Theoretical and experimental verification of thermodynamically most stable sub-stoichiometric α-WB2-z coatings by structural and mechanical analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...- Published

The tagged quasi-free npânpÏ+Ïâ reaction has been studied experimentally with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI at a deuteron incident beam energy of 1.25 GeV/nucleon ( sâ¼2.42Â GeV/c for the quasi-free collision). For the first time, differential distributions of solid statistics for Ï+Ïâ production in np collisions have been collected in the region corresponding to the large transverse momenta of the secondary particles. The invariant mass and angular distributions for the npânpÏ+Ïâ reaction are compared with different models. This comparison confirms the dominance of the t -channel with ÎÎ contribution. It also validates the changes previously introduced in the Valencia model to describe two-pion production data in other isospin channels, although some deviations are observed, especially for the Ï+Ïâ invariant mass spectrum. The extracted total cross section is also in much better agreement with this model. Our new measurement puts useful constraints for the existence of the conjectured dibaryon resonance at mass Mâ¼2.38Â GeV and with width Îâ¼70Â MeV . more...
