Abstract

Charge-changing cross-sections of $^{11-16}$C, $^{13-17}$N and $^{15-18}$O on a carbon target have been determined at energies around 300 MeV/nucleon. A nucleon separation energy-dependent correction factor has been introduced to the Glauber model calculation for extracting the nuclear charge radii from the experimental CCCSs. The charge radii of $^{11}$C, $^{13,16}$N and $^{15}$O thus were determined for the first time. With the new radii, we studied the experimental mirror-difference charge radii ($\Delta R_{\text {ch}}^{\text {mirror}}$) of $^{11}$B-$^{11}$C, $^{13}$C-$^{13}$N, $^{15}$N-$^{15}$O, $^{17}$N-$^{17}$Ne pairs for the first time. We find that the $\Delta R_{\text {ch}}^{\text {mirror}}$ values of $^{13}$C-$^{13}$N and $^{15}$N-$^{15}$O pairs follow well the empirical relation to the isospin asymmetry predicted by the $ab$ $initio$ calculations, while $\Delta R_{\text {ch}}^{\text {mirror}}$ of $^{11}$B-$^{11}$C and $^{17}$N-$^{17}$Ne pairs deviate from such relation by more than two standard deviations., Comment: 3 figures, submitted to Physics Letters B

Abstract

This study evaluates more than 4,000 tiles made of Hamamatsu visual-sensitive silicon photomultipier (SiPM), each with dimensions of 5 $\times$ 5 cm$^2$, intended for the central detector of the Taishan Anti-neutrino Observatory (TAO), a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) aimed at measuring the reactor anti-neutrino energy spectrum with unprecedented energy resolution. All SiPM tiles underwent a room temperature burn-in test in the dark for two weeks, while cryogenic testing analyzed the thermal dependence of parameters for some sampled SiPMs. Results from these comprehensive tests provide crucial insights into the long-term performance and stability of the 10 square meters of SiPMs operating at -50{\deg}C to detect scintillation photons in the TAO detector. Despite some anomalies awaiting further inspection, all SiPMs successfully passed the burn-in test over two weeks at room temperature, which is equivalent to 6.7 years at -50{\deg}C. Results are also used to guide optimal SiPM selection, configuration, and operation, ensuring reliability and sustainability in reactor neutrino measurements. Abstract

We present the charge-changing cross sections (CCCS) of $^{11-15}$C, $^{13-17}$N, and $^{15,17-18}$O at around 300 MeV/nucleon on a carbon target, which extends to $p$-shell isotopes with $N < Z$ for the first time. The Glauber model, which considers only the proton distribution of projectile nuclei, underestimates the cross sections by more than 10\%. We show that this discrepancy can be resolved by considering the contribution from the charged-particle evaporation process (CPEP) following projectile neutron removal. Using nucleon densities from the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, we investigate the isospin-dependent CPEP contribution to the CCCS for a wide range of neutron-to-proton separation energy asymmetry. Our calculations, which include the CPEP contribution, agree well with existing systematic data and reveal an ``evaporation peak" at the isospin symmetric region where the neutron-to-proton separation energy is close to zero. These results suggest that analysis beyond the Glauber model is crucial for accurately determining nuclear charge radii from CCCSs., Comment: 5 figures

Abstract

Measurements of the $^2$H($^{16}$C,$^{16}$C$^{*}$$\rightarrow^4$He+$^{12}$Be or $^6$He+$^{10}$Be)$^2$H inelastic excitation and cluster-decay reactions have been carried out at a beam energy of about 23.5 MeV/u. A specially designed detection system, including one multi-layer silicon-strip telescope at around zero degrees, has allowed the high-efficiency three-fold coincident detection and therefore the event-by-event determination of the energy of the unstable nucleus beam. The decay paths from the $^{16}$C resonances to various states of the final $^{10}$Be or $^{12}$Be nucleus are recognized thanks to the well-resolved $Q$-value spectra. The reconstructed resonances at 16.5(1), 17.3(2), 19.4(1) and 21.6(2) MeV are assigned as the $0^+$, $2^+$, $4^+$ and $6^+$ members, respectively, of the positive-parity $(3/2_\pi^-)^2(1/2_\sigma^-)^2$-bond linear-chain molecular band in $^{16}$C, based on the angular correlation analysis for the 16.5 MeV state and the excellent agreement of decay patterns between the measurements and theoretical predictions. Moreover, another intriguing high-lying state was observed at 27.2(1) MeV which decays almost exclusively to the $\sim$6 MeV states of $^{10}$Be, in line with the newly predicted pure $\sigma$-bond linear-chain configuration., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

A promising perspective is presented that humans can provide hourly warning for strong land earthquakes (EQs, Ms6). Two important atmospheric electrostatic signal features are described. A table that lists 9 strong land EQs with shock time, epicenter, magnitude, weather in the region near the epicenter, precursor beginning time, and precursor duration demonstrates that at approximately several hours to one day before a strong land EQ, the weather conditions are fair near the epicenter, and an abnormal negative atmospheric electrostatic signal is very obvious. Moreover, the mechanism is explained. A method by which someone could determine the epicenter and the magnitude of a forthcoming strong EQ is suggested. Finally, the possibility of realizing hourly warning for strong land EQs in the near future is pointed out.

Abstract

Two types of wedge-shaped CsI(Tl)s were designed to be placed behind the annular double-sided silicon detectors (ADSSDs) to identify the light charged particles with the $\Delta E-E$ method. The properties of CsI(Tl)s with different shapes and sizes, such as energy resolution, light output non-uniformity and particle identification capability, were compared by using a $\alpha$-source and a radioactive beam of $^{15}$C. The big-size CsI(Tl) was finally adopted to form the $\Delta E-E$ telescope due to better properties. The property differences of these two types of CsI(Tl)s can be interpreted based on the Geant4 simulation results.

Abstract

Experimental results of the $p(^{13}{\rm B},d)^{12}{\rm B}$ transfer reaction to the low-lying states in $^{12}$B are reported. The optical potential parameters for the entrance channel are extracted from the elastic scattering $p$($^{13}{\rm B}$, $p$) measured in the same experiment, while those for the exit channel are global ones. Spectroscopic factors associated with the $p$-, $s$-, and $d$-wave neutron transfer to the known $^{12}$B states, are extracted by comparing the deuteron angular distributions with the calculation results. The separated $s$- and $d$-wave intruder strengths in $^{13}{\rm B}_{\rm g.s.}$ were determined to be $10(2)\%$ and $6(1)\%$, respectively, which follow roughly the systematics for the $N$ = 8 neutron-rich isotones. The measured total intruder strength is in good agreement with the shell model calculation, while the individual ones evolve quite differently. 8. Predictions of $\alpha$ decay half-lives for even-even superheavy nuclei with $104 \leqslant Z \leqslant 128$ based on two-potential approach within cluster-formation model

Abstract

In present work, we systematically study the $\alpha$ decay half-lives of 170 even-even nuclei with $60 \leqslant Z \leqslant 118$ within the two-potential approach while the $\alpha$ decay preformation factor $P_\alpha$ is obtained by the cluster-formation model. The calculated results can well reproduce the experimental data. In addition, we extend this model to predict the $\alpha$ decay half-lives of 64 even-even nuclei with $104 \leqslant Z \leqslant 128$ whose $\alpha$ decay is energetically allowed or observed but not yet quantified. For comparing, the two famous models i.e. SemFIS proposed by D. Poenaru ${et\ al.}$ [\href {https://doi.org/10.1209/0295-5075/77/62001}{Europhys. Lett. \textbf{77} (2007) 62001}] and UDL proposed by C. Qi ${et\ al.}$ [\href {https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.103.072501}{Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{103} (2009) 072501}] are used. The predicted results of these models are basically consistent. At the same time, through analyzing the changing trend of $\alpha$ decay energy $Q_{\alpha}$ of \emph{Z} = 118, 120, 122, 124, 126 and 128 isotopes nuclei with the increasing of neutron number \emph{N} and that of $\alpha$ decay preformation factor $P_\alpha$ of those isotopes even-even nuclei with the increasing of neutron number \emph{N}, \emph{N} = 178 may be a new neutron magic number.

Abstract

An inelastic excitation and cluster-decay experiment $\rm {^2H}(^{16}C,~{^{4}He}+{^{12}Be}~or~{^{6}He}+{^{10}Be}){^2H}$ was carried out to investigate the linear-chain clustering structure in neutron-rich $\rm {^{16}C}$. For the first time, decay-paths from the $\rm {^{16}C}$ resonances to various states of the final nuclei were determined, thanks to the well-resolved $Q$-value spectra obtained from the three-fold coincident measurement. The close-threshold resonance at 16.5 MeV is assigned as the ${J^\pi}={0^+}$ band head of the predicted positive-parity linear-chain molecular band with ${(3/2_\pi^-)^2}{(1/2_\sigma^-)^2}$ configuration, according to the associated angular correlation and decay analysis. Other members of this band were found at 17.3, 19.4, and 21.6 MeV based on their selective decay properties, being consistent with the theoretical predictions. Another intriguing high-lying state was observed at 27.2 MeV which decays almost exclusively to $\rm {^{6}He}+{^{10}Be{(\sim6~ MeV)}}$ final channel, corresponding well to another predicted linear-chain structure with the pure $\sigma$-bond configuration., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

A promising short term precursor of major earthquakes (EQ) is very crucial in saving people and preventing huge losses. Ez, atmospheric electrostatic field vertical component, under fair air conditions, is generally oriented downwards (positive). Anomalous negative Ez signals could be used as an indicator of a great number of radioactive gases which are released from great number of rock clefts just before major earthquakes. Enhanced emission of radon radioactive decay will produce an anomalously large number of ion pairs. The positive particles will be transported downward by the fair weather electrostatic field and pile up near the surface. Finally, obviously and abnormally, an oriented upward atmospheric electric field Ez near the ground could be formed. Therefore, monitoring this Ez may be applied effectively in earthquake warning.

12. Investigation of antineutrino spectral anomaly with reactor simulation uncertainty

Abstract

Recently, three successful antineutrino experiments (Daya Bay, Double Chooz, and RENO) measured the neutrino mixing angle theta_{13}; however, significant discrepancies were found, both in the absolute flux and spectral shape. Much effort has been expended investigating the possible reasons for the discrepancies. In this study, Monte Carlo-based sampling was used to evaluate the fission fraction uncertainties. We found that fission cross-section uncertainties are an important source of uncertainty for $^{235}$U, $^{239}$Pu, and $^{241}$Pu, but for $^{238}$U, elastic and inelastic cross-sections are more important. Among uncertainty related to manufacturing parameters, fuel density is the main uncertainty; however, the total manufacturing uncertainty was very small. The uncertainties induced by burnup were evaluated through the atomic density uncertainty of the four isotopes. The total fission fraction uncertainties from reactor simulation were 0.83%, 2.24%, 1.79%, and 2.59% for235U, 238U, 239Pu, and 241Pu, respectively, at the middle of the fuel cycle. The total fission fraction uncertainty was smaller than the previously derived value of 5\%. These results are helpful for studying the reactor antineutrino anomaly and precisely measuring the antineutrino spectrum in the Daya Bay antineutrino experiment., Comment: 18 pages

Abstract

A measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is described in detail. Six 2.9-GW$_{\rm th}$ nuclear power reactors of the Daya Bay and Ling Ao nuclear power facilities served as intense sources of $\overline{\nu}_{e}$'s. Comparison of the $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ rate and energy spectrum measured by antineutrino detectors far from the nuclear reactors ($\sim$1500-1950 m) relative to detectors near the reactors ($\sim$350-600 m) allowed a precise measurement of $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ disappearance. More than 2.5 million $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ inverse beta decay interactions were observed, based on the combination of 217 days of operation of six antineutrino detectors (Dec. 2011--Jul. 2012) with a subsequent 1013 days using the complete configuration of eight detectors (Oct. 2012--Jul. 2015). The $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ rate observed at the far detectors relative to the near detectors showed a significant deficit, $R=0.949 \pm 0.002(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.002(\mathrm{syst.})$. The energy dependence of $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ disappearance showed the distinct variation predicted by neutrino oscillation. Analysis using an approximation for the three-flavor oscillation probability yielded the flavor-mixing angle $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.0841 \pm 0.0027(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.0019(\mathrm{syst.})$ and the effective neutrino mass-squared difference of $\left|{\Delta}m^2_{\mathrm{ee}}\right|=(2.50 \pm 0.06(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.06(\mathrm{syst.})) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2$. Analysis using the exact three-flavor probability found ${\Delta}m^2_{32}=(2.45 \pm 0.06(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.06(\mathrm{syst.})) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2$ assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy and ${\Delta}m^2_{32}=(-2.56 \pm 0.06(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.06(\mathrm{syst.})) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2$ for the inverted hierarchy., Comment: 44 pages, 44 figures

Abstract

The disappearance of reactor $\bar{\nu}_e$ observed by the Daya Bay experiment is examined in the framework of a model in which the neutrino is described by a wave packet with a relative intrinsic momentum dispersion $\sigma_\text{rel}$. Three pairs of nuclear reactors and eight antineutrino detectors, each with good energy resolution, distributed among three experimental halls, supply a high-statistics sample of $\bar{\nu}_e$ acquired at nine different baselines. This provides a unique platform to test the effects which arise from the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillation. The modified survival probability formula was used to fit Daya Bay data, providing the first experimental limits: $2.38 \cdot 10^{-17} < \sigma_{\rm rel} < 0.23$. Treating the dimensions of the reactor cores and detectors as constraints, the limits are improved: $10^{-14} \lesssim \sigma_{\rm rel} < 0.23$, and an upper limit of $\sigma_{\rm rel} <0.20$ is obtained. All limits correspond to a 95\% C.L. Furthermore, the effect due to the wave packet nature of neutrino oscillation is found to be insignificant for reactor antineutrinos detected by the Daya Bay experiment thus ensuring an unbiased measurement of the oscillation parameters $\sin^22\theta_{13}$ and $\Delta m^2_{32}$ within the plane wave model.

Abstract

A new measurement of the reactor antineutrino flux and energy spectrum by the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is reported. The antineutrinos were generated by six 2.9~GW$_{\mathrm{th}}$ nuclear reactors and detected by eight antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (560~m and 600~m flux-weighted baselines) and one far (1640~m flux-weighted baseline) underground experimental halls. With 621 days of data, more than 1.2 million inverse beta decay (IBD) candidates were detected. The IBD yield in the eight detectors was measured, and the ratio of measured to predicted flux was found to be $0.946\pm0.020$ ($0.992\pm0.021$) for the Huber+Mueller (ILL+Vogel) model. A 2.9~$\sigma$ deviation was found in the measured IBD positron energy spectrum compared to the predictions. In particular, an excess of events in the region of 4-6~MeV was found in the measured spectrum, with a local significance of 4.4~$\sigma$. Abstract

This Letter reports an improved search for light sterile neutrino mixing in the electron antineutrino disappearance channel with the full configuration of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. With an additional 404 days of data collected in eight antineutrino detectors, this search benefits from 3.6 times the statistics available to the previous publication, as well as from improvements in energy calibration and background reduction. A relative comparison of the rate and energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos in the three experimental halls yields no evidence of sterile neutrino mixing in the $2\times10^{-4} \lesssim |\Delta m^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.3$ eV$^{2}$ mass range. The resulting limits on $\sin^{2}2\theta_{14}$ are improved by approximately a factor of 2 over previous results and constitute the most stringent constraints to date in the $|\Delta m^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.2$ eV$^{2}$ region., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Searches for a light sterile neutrino have been performed independently by the MINOS and the Daya Bay experiments using the muon (anti)neutrino and electron antineutrino disappearance channels, respectively. In this Letter, results from both experiments are combined with those from the Bugey-3 reactor neutrino experiment to constrain oscillations into light sterile neutrinos. The three experiments are sensitive to complementary regions of parameter space, enabling the combined analysis to probe regions allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments in a minimally extended four-neutrino flavor framework. Stringent limits on $\sin^2 2\theta_{\mu e}$ are set over 6 orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting $\Delta m^2_{41}$. The sterile-neutrino mixing phase space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded for $\Delta m^2_{41} < 0.8$ eV$^2$ at 95% CL$_s$., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, published in Physical Review Letters. Abstract

This article reports an improved independent measurement of neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. Electron antineutrinos were identified by inverse $\beta$-decays with the emitted neutron captured by hydrogen, yielding a data-set with principally distinct uncertainties from that with neutrons captured by gadolinium. With the final two of eight antineutrino detectors installed, this study used 621 days of data including the previously reported 217-day data set with six detectors. The dominant statistical uncertainty was reduced by 49%. Intensive studies of the cosmogenic muon-induced $^9$Li and fast neutron backgrounds and the neutron-capture energy selection efficiency, resulted in a reduction of the systematic uncertainty by 26%. The deficit in the detected number of antineutrinos at the far detectors relative to the expected number based on the near detectors yielded $\sin^22\theta_{13} = 0.071 \pm 0.011$ in the three-neutrino-oscillation framework. Abstract

This Letter reports a measurement of the flux and energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos from six 2.9~GW$_{th}$ nuclear reactors with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1,579~m) underground experimental halls in the Daya Bay experiment. Using 217 days of data, 296,721 and 41,589 inverse beta decay (IBD) candidates were detected in the near and far halls, respectively. The measured IBD yield is (1.55 $\pm$ 0.04) $\times$ 10$^{-18}$~cm$^2$/GW/day or (5.92 $\pm$ 0.14) $\times$ 10$^{-43}$~cm$^2$/fission. This flux measurement is consistent with previous short-baseline reactor antineutrino experiments and is $0.946\pm0.022$ ($0.991\pm0.023$) relative to the flux predicted with the Huber+Mueller (ILL+Vogel) fissile antineutrino model. The measured IBD positron energy spectrum deviates from both spectral predictions by more than 2$\sigma$ over the full energy range with a local significance of up to $\sim$4$\sigma$ between 4-6 MeV. A reactor antineutrino spectrum of IBD reactions is extracted from the measured positron energy spectrum for model-independent predictions.

Abstract

The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of $\bar{\nu}_e$ oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world's most precise measurement of $\rm{sin}^22\theta_{13}$ and the effective mass splitting $\Delta m_{ee}^2$. The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world's most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors' baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. Abstract

We report a new measurement of electron antineutrino disappearance using the fully-constructed Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. The final two of eight antineutrino detectors were installed in the summer of 2012. Including the 404 days of data collected from October 2012 to November 2013 resulted in a total exposure of 6.9$\times$10$^5$ GW$_{\rm th}$-ton-days, a 3.6 times increase over our previous results. Improvements in energy calibration limited variations between detectors to 0.2%. Removal of six $^{241}$Am-$^{13}$C radioactive calibration sources reduced the background by a factor of two for the detectors in the experimental hall furthest from the reactors. Direct prediction of the antineutrino signal in the far detectors based on the measurements in the near detectors explicitly minimized the dependence of the measurement on models of reactor antineutrino emission. The uncertainties in our estimates of $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13}$ and $|\Delta m^2_{ee}|$ were halved as a result of these improvements. Analysis of the relative antineutrino rates and energy spectra between detectors gave $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.084\pm0.005$ and $|\Delta m^{2}_{ee}|= (2.42\pm0.11) \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ in the three-neutrino framework., Comment: Updated to match final published version

Abstract

A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines from six 2.9~GW$_{\rm th}$ nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1579~m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the $10^{\rm -3}~{\rm eV}^{2} < |\Delta m_{41}^{2}| < 0.3~{\rm eV}^{2}$ range. The relative spectral distortion due to electron antineutrino disappearance was found to be consistent with that of the three-flavor oscillation model. The derived limits on $\sin^22\theta_{14}$ cover the $10^{-3}~{\rm eV}^{2} \lesssim |\Delta m^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1~{\rm eV}^{2}$ region, which was largely unexplored., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

A new measurement of the $\theta_{13}$ mixing angle has been obtained at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment via the detection of inverse beta decays tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen. The antineutrino events for hydrogen capture are distinct from those for gadolinium capture with largely different systematic uncertainties, allowing a determination independent of the gadolinium-capture result and an improvement on the precision of $\theta_{13}$ measurement. With a 217-day antineutrino data set obtained with six antineutrino detectors and from six 2.9 GW$_{th}$ reactors, the rate deficit observed at the far hall is interpreted as $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.083\pm0.018$ in the three-flavor oscillation model. When combined with the gadolinium-capture result from Daya Bay, we obtain $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.089\pm0.008$ as the final result for the six-antineutrino-detector configuration of the Daya Bay experiment.

Abstract

A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos ($\overline{\nu}_{e}$) from six $2.9$ GW$_{\rm th}$ reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 m and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41589 (203809 and 92912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.090^{+0.008}_{-0.009} $ and the first direct measurement of the $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ mass-squared difference $|\Delta m^{2}_{ee}|= (2.59_{-0.20}^{+0.19}) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2 $ is obtained using the observed $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of $|\Delta m^{2}_{ee}|$ is consistent with $|\Delta m^{2}_{\mu\mu}|$ measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model., Comment: As accepted for publication by Phys. 26. Design and Optimization of the Irregular Shaped Permanent Magnet With High Homogeneity in the Magnetic Recoil Spectrometer System

Abstract

The magnetic recoil spectrometer (MRS) system was established and optimized for precisely measuring the absolute neutron energy spectrum in high-resolution implosion experiments at the High Magnetic Field Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CHFML). The MRS system generates an irregular magnetic field that is wedge-shaped relative to the trajectory of the incident particle, and the magnetic field map in the wedge-shaped region determines the performance of the MRS prototype. To improve magnetic intensity and obtain a high uniformity magnetic field in the pole gap, a 3D method was introduced to create a closed magnetic circuit instead of the traditional magnet. The optimized magnet system is lighter, more compact, uses fewer magnet materials. Additionally, the uniform region was expanded, reaching a magnetic field of 0.98T with a 20 mm pole gap. The magnetic deviation on the symmetric surface is less than 0.006 T. This paper provides a detailed introduction to the 3D-type method, comparing with the traditional magnets. It discusses the advantages and challenges and presents potential diversified structures based on 3D methods for the future.

Abstract

We studied experimentally and theoretically the interaction of lasing modes in random media. In a homogeneously broadened gain medium, cross gain saturation leads to spatial repulsion of lasing modes. In an inhomogeneously broadened gain medium, mode repulsion occurs in the spectral domain. Some lasing modes are coupled through photon hopping or electron absorption and reemission. Under pulsed pumping, weak coupling of two modes leads to synchronization of their lasing action. Abstract

We have studied the dynamic effect of nonlinearity on lasing in disordered medium. The third-order nonlinearity not only changes the frequency and size of lasing modes, but also modifies the laser emission intensity and laser pulse width. When the nonlinear response time is comparable to or longer than the lifetime of the lasing mode, the nonlinearity changes the laser output through modifying the size of the lasing mode. When the nonlinear response is much faster than the buildup of the lasing mode, positive nonlinearity always extracts more laser emission from the random medium due to the enhancement of single particle scattering., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We present a new method for the measurements of photonuclear reaction flux-weighted average cross sections and isomeric yield ratios using laser-driven ultra-bright ultra-fast bremsstrahlung $\gamma$-ray, especially for photonuclear reactions with short half-life times. A 200 TW laser was used to generate stable near-monoenergetic electron beams via laser wakefield acceleration. The flux-weighted average cross sections and isomeric ratios of $^{197}$Au($\gamma,\,xn;\,x\,=\,1\thicksim7$) reactions were analyzed through activation measurements. The results showed good agreements with previous works and were compared with TALYS 1.9 calculations. The $^{197}$Au($\gamma$,\,7n)$^{190}$Au reaction cross sections were first achieved. This method offered a unique way of gaining insight into photonuclear reaction researches with short half-life times, which extremely lack experimental data.

Abstract

When the radio communication of an armed squad fighting in a jungle is interfered with by enemy’s radio jamming equipment and their command and intelligence cannot be transmitted and exchanged, are there any other communication methods that can be used to solve such an emergency and covert communication problem? Focusing on this problem, a camouflage covert communication method (CCCM) in air is proposed by imitating cricket’s sound. As well-known, there exist all kinds of animals’ sounds in the jungle; however, hearing these animals’ sounds, people generally considers them as background noise and ignores them. Based on this fact, the proposed CCCM uses the cricket’s sound as the carrier wave, imitates the features of the cricket’s call sequence to construct the camouflage communication sequence, and utilizes the time interval (TI) between two adjacent pulses to encode information. Abstract

Green tea and selenium (Se) improve non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, studies on the effect of green tea and Se-enriched green tea on NAFLD are limited. C57BL/6 mice were divided into high-fat diet (HFD), HFD+regular green tea (T), and HFD+Se-enriched green tea (SeT) groups after 12 weeks of feeding with HFD. HFD feeding was continued, and the mice in the HFD+T and HFD+SeT groups drank corresponding tea solution for another 12 weeks. The control (CON) group was given normal diet. At the end of the experiment, serum, liver, fat, and intestinal tract were collected. Results showed that both tea interventions decreased body and fat weight. Histological analysis showed that both tea interventions alleviated steatosis, which is supported by the changes in lipid profiles and lipogenic pathways. Tea interventions significantly increased superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase levels; and decreased TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and malondialdehyde contents. HFD significantly increased total bile acid in the intestinal contents and liver, duodenal 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) level and tryptophan hydroxylase gene expression, and hepatic 5-HT, 5-HT receptor 2A, monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A), and H2O2; all of them reversed by the tea interventions. Furthermore, the improved oxidative stress, inflammatory response, duodenal 5-HT, and hepatic MAO-A were more pronounced in the HFD+SeT group than in the HFD+T group. Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of gastric cancer interstitial fluid (GCIF) on tumors and explore the possible mechanism of Xiaotan Sanjie decoction (XTSJ) on treatment of gastric cancer from the view of regulating microRNA-21 (miR-21) expression. The GCIF was extracted and identified by measuring the levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and miR-21. The effects of GCIF on the proliferation of SGC-7901 cells and tumor growing were assessed by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and subcutaneously transplanted tumor-bearing nude mice model, respectively. Additionally, inhibition effect of XTSJ decoction on proliferation of SGC-7901 cells intervened by GCIF were assessed in vitro and anti-cancer effect of it was further assessed using orthotopic transplanted tumor-bearing nude mice model. The concentration of SGC-7901 gastric cancer cells were dependent on the concentration of the added GCIF. After 72 hours of continuous culture, the interstitial fluid had an obvious proliferative effect on the SGC-7901 tumor cells, which was the most significant in the high concentration group. XTSJ decoction could inhibit the growth-promoting effect (P < 0.01) of GCIF on gastric cancer cells. Intervention of the GCIF might promote the growth (P < 0.05) of the subcutaneously transplanted tumors in nude mice and decrease the net weight of the tumor-bearing nude mice (P < 0.05) after tumor removal. The GCIF was able to up-regulate the expression (P < 0.001) of miR-21 in the subcutaneously transplanted tumors. XTSJ decoction could downregulate the expression (P < 0.05) of miR-21 in SGC-7901 orthotopically transplanted tumors. XTSJ decoction can inhibit the multiplicative effect of GCIF on gastric cancer cells, growth of gastric tumor and promotion effect of GCIF on tumors, probably due to the down-regulating miR-21 expression in tumor tissues. Abstract

The capacity of small birds to sustain periods of food shortage largely depends on their ability to adaptively regulate expenditure in response to reduced food supply. To investigate changes in thermoregulation during periods of food restriction, we measured changes in the body mass, basal metabolic rate (BMR), organ mass, thyroid hormone levels, and several physiological and biochemical markers, of silky starlings (Sturnus sericeus) subject to 16 days food restriction. Birds in the control group were provided with food ad libitum whereas those in the food restriction (FR) group were provided with half of the usual quantity of food. Oxygen consumption was measured using an open–circuit respirometry system. Mitochondrial state-4 respiration and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity in the liver and pectoral muscle were measured with a Clark electrode. The concentrations of T3 and T4 in plasma were determined by radioimmunoassay. Starlings in the FR group had lower body mass and BMR compared to the control group. Starlings in the FR group also had lower state-4 respiration and COX activity in the liver and muscle, and lower T3/T4 ratio in plasma, relative to the control group. BMR was positively correlated with body mass, state-4 respiration and COX activity, in liver and muscle tissue. These results indicate that silky starlings can decrease their energy metabolism during periods of food shortage by making a suite of adjustments from the organismal to the biochemical level. These morphological, physiological and biochemical responses could be adaptations that allow starlings to adjust to seasonal changes in food abundance, such as the typically lower food abundance over winter.
