1. Noncredit Career and Technical Education Programs in Virginia. Early Findings from the FastForward Study

Abstract: Across the country, as technology continues to advance rapidly, the labor market exhibits a growing need for workers who receive frequent and ongoing skill development. Employers in many fields struggle to find adequately trained workers to meet their needs. Community college noncredit career and technical education (CTE) programs are an important contributor to skill and workforce development and help to close this "skills gap." This brief summarizes early findings from a study of FastForward, which uses a pay-for-performance model to fund noncredit CTE programs at the 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System. FastForward aims to increase the supply of workers who receive credentials for high-demand occupations in Virginia. The FastForward study is focused on identifying institutional and programmatic factors that may influence learners' academic and labor market outcomes. This brief presents findings on the different approaches used by colleges and programs to deliver training, student and staff experiences in these CTE programs, and students' academic and labor market outcomes.

2. Analytics for an Audience of Healthcare Professionals: Curriculum Design and Student Perceptions

Abstract: There has been an increasing demand for healthcare analytics skills and competence by healthcare organizations. Although many universities have established programs and courses on healthcare analytics, most of these curricula have been designed for information systems (IS), information technology (IT), or analytics students. It is unclear how these curricula would fit the needs of healthcare professionals who have little IT knowledge and background yet also need analytics for their clinical or administrative job roles. This research reports on the design of an executive MBA course intended for an audience of healthcare professionals. The learning objectives, topic coverage, software tools, and assessment methods are presented along with students' perceptions of these aspects of the course. Several important lessons learned are shared and future directions are proposed, which can help other educators design similar healthcare analytics courses for professional audiences.

3. Noncredit Workforce Training, Industry Credentials, and Labor Market Outcomes. EdWorkingPaper No. 24-959

Abstract: Many public workforce training programs lead to industry-recognized, third-party awarded credentials, but little research has been conducted on the economic benefits of these credentials in the labor market. This paper provides quasi-experimental evidence on the labor market returns to industry-recognized credentials connected to community college workforce noncredit training programs. Based on novel data that includes approximately 24,000 working-age adults enrolled in noncredit workforce training programs at the Virginia Community College System, we employ a comparative individual-level fixed effects model to estimate earnings premia net of fixed attributes and earnings time-trends. Our results indicate that earning an industry-recognized credential, on average, increases quarterly earnings by approximately $1,000 and the probability of being employed by 2.4 percentage points, although there is substantial heterogeneity in economic return across different program fields. Back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that the earnings gains associated with the industry credential obtained through the noncredit workforce training would exceed program costs in just over half a year on average.

4. The Promises and Pitfalls of Using Language Models to Measure Instruction Quality in Education. EdWorkingPaper No. 24-948

Abstract: Assessing instruction quality is a fundamental component of any improvement efforts in the education system. However, traditional manual assessments are expensive, subjective, and heavily dependent on observers' expertise and idiosyncratic factors, preventing teachers from getting timely and frequent feedback. Different from prior research that focuses on low-inference instructional practices, this paper presents the first study that leverages Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to assess multiple high-inference instructional practices in two distinct educational settings: in-person K-12 classrooms and simulated performance tasks for pre-service teachers. This is also the first study that applies NLP to measure a teaching practice that has been demonstrated to be particularly effective for students with special needs. We confront two challenges inherent in NLP-based instructional analysis, including noisy and long input data and highly skewed distributions of human ratings. Our results suggest that pretrained Language Models (PLMs) demonstrate performances comparable to the agreement level of human raters for variables that are more discrete and require lower inference, but their efficacy diminishes with more complex teaching practices. Interestingly, using only teachers' utterances as input yields strong results for student-centered variables, alleviating common concerns over the difficulty of collecting and transcribing high-quality student speech data in in-person teaching settings. Our findings highlight both the potential and the limitations of current NLP techniques in the education domain, opening avenues for further exploration.

5. Advancing Multi-talker ASR Performance with Large Language Models

Abstract: Recognizing overlapping speech from multiple speakers in conversational scenarios is one of the most challenging problem for automatic speech recognition (ASR). Serialized output training (SOT) is a classic method to address multi-talker ASR, with the idea of concatenating transcriptions from multiple speakers according to the emission times of their speech for training. However, SOT-style transcriptions, derived from concatenating multiple related utterances in a conversation, depend significantly on modeling long contexts. Therefore, compared to traditional methods that primarily emphasize encoder performance in attention-based encoder-decoder (AED) architectures, a novel approach utilizing large language models (LLMs) that leverages the capabilities of pre-trained decoders may be better suited for such complex and challenging scenarios. In this paper, we propose an LLM-based SOT approach for multi-talker ASR, leveraging pre-trained speech encoder and LLM, fine-tuning them on multi-talker dataset using appropriate strategies. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach surpasses traditional AED-based methods on the simulated dataset LibriMix and achieves state-of-the-art performance on the evaluation set of the real-world dataset AMI, outperforming the AED model trained with 1000 times more supervised data in previous works., Comment: 8 pages, accepted by IEEE SLT 2024

Abstract: The broad physics reach of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment covers rare phenomena beyond the direct detection of dark matter. We report precise measurements of the extremely rare decay of $^{124}$Xe through the process of two-neutrino double electron capture (2$\nu$2EC), utilizing a $1.39\,\mathrm{kg} \times \mathrm{yr}$ isotopic exposure from the first LZ science run. A half-life of $T_{1/2}^{2\nu2\mathrm{EC}} = (1.09 \pm 0.14_{\text{stat}} \pm 0.05_{\text{sys}}) \times 10^{22}\,\mathrm{yr}$ is observed with a statistical significance of $8.3\,\sigma$, in agreement with literature. First empirical measurements of the KK capture fraction relative to other K-shell modes were conducted, and demonstrate consistency with respect to recent signal models at the $1.4\,\sigma$ level., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Precise direct cosmic-ray (CR) measurements provide an important probe to study the energetic particle sources in our Galaxy, and the interstellar environment through which these particles propagate. Uncertainties on hadronic models, ion-nucleon cross sections in particular, are currently the limiting factor towards obtaining more accurate CR ion flux measurements with calorimetric space-based experiments. We present an energy-dependent measurement of the inelastic cross section of protons and helium-4 nuclei (alpha particles) on a Bi$_4$Ge$_3$O$_{12}$ target, using 88 months of data collected by the DAMPE space mission. The kinetic energy range per nucleon of the measurement points ranges from 18 GeV to 9 TeV for protons, and from 5 GeV/n to 3 TeV/n for helium-4 nuclei. Our results lead to a significant improvement of the CR flux normalisation. Abstract: Using $(2712.4 \pm 14.3) \times 10^6~\psi$(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we search for the hadronic transition $h_c \to \pi^+\pi^-J/\psi$ via $\psi(3686)\to \pi^0 h_c$. No significant signal is observed. We set the most stringent upper limits to date on the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(\psi(3686)\to \pi^0 h_c)\times\mathcal{B}(h_c\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi)$ and $\mathcal{B}(h_c \to \pi^+\pi^-J/\psi)$ at the 90$\%$ confidence level, which are determined to be $6.7\times 10^{-7}$ and $9.4 \times10^{-4}$, respectively.

Abstract: In this Letter, a systematic study of the weak radiative hyperon decay $\Xi^{0}\to\Lambda\gamma$ at an electron-positron collider using entangled $\Xi^{0}\bar{\Xi}^{0}$ pair events is presented. The absolute branching fraction for this decay has been measured for the first time, and is $\left(1.347 \pm 0.066_{\mathrm stat.}\pm0.054_{\mathrm syst.}\right)\times 10^{-3}$. The decay asymmetry parameter, which characterizes the effect of parity violation in the decay, is determined to be $-0.741 \pm 0.062_{\mathrm stat.}\pm 0.019_{\mathrm syst.}$. The obtained results are consistent with the world average values within the uncertainties, offering valuable insights into the underlying mechanism governing the weak radiative hyperon decays. The charge conjugation parity ($CP$) symmetries of branching fraction and decay asymmetry parameter in the decay are also studied. Abstract: The rare electromagnetic $J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-\mu^+\mu^-$ decay is observed with a significance greatly exceeding the discovery threshold, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during 2016-2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\text{fb}^{-1}$. The rate of this decay is measured relative to that of the $J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-$ mode. 11. Multi-source Domain Adaptation for Panoramic Semantic Segmentation

Abstract: Panoramic semantic segmentation has received widespread attention recently due to its comprehensive 360\degree field of view. However, labeling such images demands greater resources compared to pinhole images. As a result, many unsupervised domain adaptation methods for panoramic semantic segmentation have emerged, utilizing real pinhole images or low-cost synthetic panoramic images. But, the segmentation model lacks understanding of the panoramic structure when only utilizing real pinhole images, and it lacks perception of real-world scenes when only adopting synthetic panoramic images. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new task of multi-source domain adaptation for panoramic semantic segmentation, aiming to utilize both real pinhole and synthetic panoramic images in the source domains, enabling the segmentation model to perform well on unlabeled real panoramic images in the target domain. Further, we propose Deformation Transform Aligner for Panoramic Semantic Segmentation (DTA4PASS), which converts all pinhole images in the source domains into panoramic-like images, and then aligns the converted source domains with the target domain. Specifically, DTA4PASS consists of two main components: Unpaired Semantic Morphing (USM) and Distortion Gating Alignment (DGA). Firstly, in USM, the Semantic Dual-view Discriminator (SDD) assists in training the diffeomorphic deformation network, enabling the effective transformation of pinhole images without paired panoramic views. Secondly, DGA assigns pinhole-like and panoramic-like features to each image by gating, and aligns these two features through uncertainty estimation. DTA4PASS outperforms the previous state-of-the-art methods by 1.92% and 2.19% on the outdoor and indoor multi-source domain adaptation scenarios, respectively. Abstract: Measurements of the strong-phase difference between $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$ are performed in bins of phase space. The study exploits a sample of quantum-correlated $D\bar{D}$ mesons collected by the BESIII experiment in $e^+e^-$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93~fb$^{-1}$. Here, $D$ denotes a neutral charm meson in a superposition of flavor eigenstates. The reported results are valuable for measurements of the $C\!P$-violating phase $\gamma$ (also denoted $\phi_3$) in $B^\pm \to DK^\pm$, $D \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$ decays, and the binning schemes are designed to provide good statistical sensitivity to this parameter. The expected uncertainty on $\gamma$ arising from the precision of the strong-phase measurements, when applied to very large samples of $B$-meson decays, is around $1.5^\circ$ or $2^\circ$, depending on the binning scheme. The binned strong-phase parameters are combined to give a value of $F_+^{4\pi} = 0.746 \pm 0.010 \pm 0.004$ for the $C\!P$-even fraction of $D^0 \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$ decays, which is around 30\% more precise than the previous best measurement of this quantity.

13. VideoLLM-MoD: Efficient Video-Language Streaming with Mixture-of-Depths Vision Computation

Abstract: A well-known dilemma in large vision-language models (e.g., GPT-4, LLaVA) is that while increasing the number of vision tokens generally enhances visual understanding, it also significantly raises memory and computational costs, especially in long-term, dense video frame streaming scenarios. Although learnable approaches like Q-Former and Perceiver Resampler have been developed to reduce the vision token burden, they overlook the context causally modeled by LLMs (i.e., key-value cache), potentially leading to missed visual cues when addressing user queries. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to reduce vision compute by leveraging redundant vision tokens "skipping layers" rather than decreasing the number of vision tokens. Our method, VideoLLM-MoD, is inspired by mixture-of-depths LLMs and addresses the challenge of numerous vision tokens in long-term or streaming video. Specifically, for each transformer layer, we learn to skip the computation for a high proportion (e.g., 80\%) of vision tokens, passing them directly to the next layer. This approach significantly enhances model efficiency, achieving approximately \textasciitilde42\% time and \textasciitilde30\% memory savings for the entire training. Moreover, our method reduces the computation in the context and avoid decreasing the vision tokens, thus preserving or even improving performance compared to the vanilla model. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of VideoLLM-MoD, showing its state-of-the-art results on multiple benchmarks, including narration, forecasting, and summarization tasks in COIN, Ego4D, and Ego-Exo4D datasets.

14. More Text, Less Point: Towards 3D Data-Efficient Point-Language Understanding

Abstract: Enabling Large Language Models (LLMs) to comprehend the 3D physical world remains a significant challenge. Due to the lack of large-scale 3D-text pair datasets, the success of LLMs has yet to be replicated in 3D understanding. In this paper, we rethink this issue and propose a new task: 3D Data-Efficient Point-Language Understanding. The goal is to enable LLMs to achieve robust 3D object understanding with minimal 3D point cloud and text data pairs. To address this task, we introduce GreenPLM, which leverages more text data to compensate for the lack of 3D data. First, inspired by using CLIP to align images and text, we utilize a pre-trained point cloud-text encoder to map the 3D point cloud space to the text space. This mapping leaves us to seamlessly connect the text space with LLMs. Once the point-text-LLM connection is established, we further enhance text-LLM alignment by expanding the intermediate text space, thereby reducing the reliance on 3D point cloud data. Specifically, we generate 6M free-text descriptions of 3D objects, and design a three-stage training strategy to help LLMs better explore the intrinsic connections between different modalities. To achieve efficient modality alignment, we design a zero-parameter cross-attention module for token pooling. Extensive experimental results show that GreenPLM requires only 12% of the 3D training data used by existing state-of-the-art models to achieve superior 3D understanding. 15. Legilimens: Practical and Unified Content Moderation for Large Language Model Services

Abstract: Given the societal impact of unsafe content generated by large language models (LLMs), ensuring that LLM services comply with safety standards is a crucial concern for LLM service providers. Common content moderation methods are limited by an effectiveness-and-efficiency dilemma, where simple models are fragile while sophisticated models consume excessive computational resources. In this paper, we reveal for the first time that effective and efficient content moderation can be achieved by extracting conceptual features from chat-oriented LLMs, despite their initial fine-tuning for conversation rather than content moderation. We propose a practical and unified content moderation framework for LLM services, named Legilimens, which features both effectiveness and efficiency. Our red-team model-based data augmentation enhances the robustness of Legilimens against state-of-the-art jailbreaking. Additionally, we develop a framework to theoretically analyze the cost-effectiveness of Legilimens compared to other methods. We have conducted extensive experiments on five host LLMs, seventeen datasets, and nine jailbreaking methods to verify the effectiveness, efficiency, and robustness of Legilimens against normal and adaptive adversaries. A comparison of Legilimens with both commercial and academic baselines demonstrates the superior performance of Legilimens. 16. Distance-Forward Learning: Enhancing the Forward-Forward Algorithm Towards High-Performance On-Chip Learning

Abstract: The Forward-Forward (FF) algorithm was recently proposed as a local learning method to address the limitations of backpropagation (BP), offering biological plausibility along with memory-efficient and highly parallelized computational benefits. However, it suffers from suboptimal performance and poor generalization, largely due to inadequate theoretical support and a lack of effective learning strategies. In this work, we reformulate FF using distance metric learning and propose a distance-forward algorithm (DF) to improve FF performance in supervised vision tasks while preserving its local computational properties, making it competitive for efficient on-chip learning. To achieve this, we reinterpret FF through the lens of centroid-based metric learning and develop a goodness-based N-pair margin loss to facilitate the learning of discriminative features. Furthermore, we integrate layer-collaboration local update strategies to reduce information loss caused by greedy local parameter updates. Our method surpasses existing FF models and other advanced local learning approaches, with accuracies of 99.7\% on MNIST, 88.2\% on CIFAR-10, 59\% on CIFAR-100, 95.9\% on SVHN, and 82.5\% on ImageNette, respectively. Moreover, it achieves comparable performance with less than 40\% memory cost compared to BP training, while exhibiting stronger robustness to multiple types of hardware-related noise, demonstrating its potential for online learning and energy-efficient computation on neuromorphic chips.

17. Ensemble Predicate Decoding for Unbiased Scene Graph Generation

Abstract: Scene Graph Generation (SGG) aims to generate a comprehensive graphical representation that accurately captures the semantic information of a given scenario. However, the SGG model's performance in predicting more fine-grained predicates is hindered by a significant predicate bias. According to existing works, the long-tail distribution of predicates in training data results in the biased scene graph. However, the semantic overlap between predicate categories makes predicate prediction difficult, and there is a significant difference in the sample size of semantically similar predicates, making the predicate prediction more difficult. Therefore, higher requirements are placed on the discriminative ability of the model. In order to address this problem, this paper proposes Ensemble Predicate Decoding (EPD), which employs multiple decoders to attain unbiased scene graph generation. Two auxiliary decoders trained on lower-frequency predicates are used to improve the discriminative ability of the model. Extensive experiments are conducted on the VG, and the experiment results show that EPD enhances the model's representation capability for predicates. In addition, we find that our approach ensures a relatively superior predictive capability for more frequent predicates compared to previous unbiased SGG methods.

18. Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Powering over Multi-antenna OFDM Systems

Abstract: This paper considers a multi-functional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with integrated sensing, communication, and powering (ISCAP), in which a multi-antenna base station (BS) transmits OFDM signals to simultaneously deliver information to multiple information receivers (IRs), provide energy supply to multiple energy receivers (ERs), and sense potential targets based on the echo signals. To facilitate ISCAP, the BS employs the joint transmit beamforming design by sending dedicated sensing/energy beams jointly with information beams. Furthermore, we consider the beam scanning for sensing, in which the joint beams scan in different directions over time to sense potential targets. In order to ensure the sensing beam scanning performance and meet the communication and powering requirements, it is essential to properly schedule IRs and ERs and design the resource allocation over time, frequency, and space. More specifically, we optimize the joint transmit beamforming over multiple OFDM symbols and subcarriers, with the objective of minimizing the average beampattern matching error of beam scanning for sensing, subject to the constraints on the average communication rates at IRs and the average harvested power at ERs. We find converged high-quality solutions to the formulated problem by proposing efficient iterative algorithms based on advanced optimization techniques. We also develop various heuristic designs based on the principles of zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming, round-robin user scheduling, and time switching, respectively. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithms adaptively generate information and sensing/energy beams at each time-frequency slot to match the scheduled IRs/ERs with the desired scanning beam, significantly outperforming the heuristic designs., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

19. Sample-Independent Federated Learning Backdoor Attack

Abstract: In federated learning, backdoor attacks embed triggers in the adversarial client's data to inject a backdoor into the model. To evade detection through sample analysis, non-sample-modifying backdoor attack methods based on dropout have been developed. However, these methods struggle to covertly utilize dropout in evaluation mode, thus hindering their deployment in real-world scenarios. To address these, this paper introduces GhostB, a novel approach to federated learning backdoor attacks that neither alters samples nor relies on dropout. This method employs the behavior of neurons producing specific values as triggers. By mapping these neuronal values to categories specified by the adversary, the backdoor is implanted and activated when particular feature values are detected at designated neurons. Our experiments conducted on TIMIT, LibriSpeech, and VoxCeleb2 databases in both Closed Set Identification (CSI) and Open Set Identification (OSI) scenarios demonstrate that GhostB achieves a 100% success rate upon activation, with this rate maintained across experiments involving 1 to 50 ghost neurons. This paper investigates how the dispersion of neurons and their depth within hidden layers affect the success rate, revealing that increased dispersion and positioning of neurons can significantly decrease effectiveness, potentially rendering the attack unsuccessful.

20. Sensing-aided Near-Field Secure Communications with Mobile Eavesdroppers

Abstract: The additional degree of freedom (DoF) in the distance domain of near-field communication offers new opportunities for physical layer security (PLS) design. However, existing works mainly consider static eavesdroppers, and the related study with mobile eavesdroppers is still in its infancy due to the difficulty in obtaining the channel state information (CSI) of the eavesdropper. To this end, we propose to leverage the sensing capability of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems to assist PLS design. To comprehensively study the dynamic behaviors of the system, we propose a Pareto optimization framework, where a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP) is formulated to simultaneously optimize three key performance metrics: power consumption, number of securely served users, and tracking performance, while guaranteeing the achievable rate of the users with a given leakage rate constraint. A globally optimal design based on the generalized Benders decomposition (GBD) method is proposed to achieve the Pareto optimal solutions. To reduce the computational complexity, we further design a low-complexity algorithm based on zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming and successive convex approximation (SCA). Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and reveal the intrinsic trade-offs between the three performance metrics. It is observed that near-field communication offers a favorable beam diffraction effect for PLS, where the energy of the information signal is nulled around the eavesdropper and focused on the users.

21. SAB:A Stealing and Robust Backdoor Attack based on Steganographic Algorithm against Federated Learning

Abstract: Federated learning, an innovative network architecture designed to safeguard user privacy, is gaining widespread adoption in the realm of technology. However, given the existence of backdoor attacks in federated learning, exploring the security of federated learning is significance. Nevertheless, the backdoors investigated in current federated learning research can be readily detected by human inspection or resisted by detection algorithms. Accordingly, a new goal has been set to develop stealing and robust federated learning backdoor attacks. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach, SAB, tailored specifically for backdoor attacks in federated learning, presenting an alternative gradient updating mechanism. SAB attack based on steganographic algorithm, using image steganographic algorithm to build a full-size trigger to improve the accuracy of backdoors and use multiple loss joint computation to produce triggers. SAB exhibits smaller distances to benign samples and greater imperceptibility to the human eye. As such, our triggers are capable of mitigating or evading specific backdoor defense methods. In SAB, the bottom-95\% method is applied to extend the lifespan of backdoor attacks. It updates the gradient on minor value points to reduce the probability of being cleaned. Finally, the generalization of backdoors is enhanced with Sparse-update to improve the backdoor accuracy.

22. Smart Home Cyber Insurance Pricing

Abstract: Our homes are increasingly employing various kinds of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, leading to the notion of smart homes. While this trend brings convenience to our daily life, it also introduces cyber risks. To mitigate such risks, the demand for smart home cyber insurance has been growing rapidly. However, there are no studies on analyzing the competency of smart home cyber insurance policies offered by cyber insurance vendors (i.e., insurers), where `competency' means the insurer is profitable and smart home owners are not overly charged with premiums and/or deductibles. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for pricing smart home cyber insurance, which can be adopted by insurers in practice. Our case studies show, among other things, that insurers are over charging smart home owners in terms of premiums and deductibles.

23. IntelliCare: Improving Healthcare Analysis with Variance-Controlled Patient-Level Knowledge from Large Language Models

Abstract: While pioneering deep learning methods have made great strides in analyzing electronic health record (EHR) data, they often struggle to fully capture the semantics of diverse medical codes from limited data. The integration of external knowledge from Large Language Models (LLMs) presents a promising avenue for improving healthcare predictions. However, LLM analyses may exhibit significant variance due to ambiguity problems and inconsistency issues, hindering their effective utilization. To address these challenges, we propose IntelliCare, a novel framework that leverages LLMs to provide high-quality patient-level external knowledge and enhance existing EHR models. Concretely, IntelliCare identifies patient cohorts and employs task-relevant statistical information to augment LLM understanding and generation, effectively mitigating the ambiguity problem. Additionally, it refines LLM-derived knowledge through a hybrid approach, generating multiple analyses and calibrating them using both the EHR model and perplexity measures. Experimental evaluations on three clinical prediction tasks across two large-scale EHR datasets demonstrate that IntelliCare delivers significant performance improvements to existing methods, highlighting its potential in advancing personalized healthcare predictions and decision support systems.

Abstract: Due to the lack of long-range order, it remains challenging to characterize the structure of disordered solids and understand the nature of the glass transition. Here we propose a new structural order parameter by taking into account multiple rotational symmetries. By studying its statistics for two-dimensional disordered packings of hard particles along the jamming transition line, we observe the evolution from disordered-particle-rich states to ordered-particle-rich states with the increase of packing fraction, together with the unusual non-monotonic change of the degree of hyperuniformity. At the high packing fraction end of the jamming transition line, the packings are mostly composed of ordered particles and are nearly hyperuniform beyond a finite length. Our work links the local order fluctuations to the thermodynamic stability and density fluctuations of disordered solids. Taking advantage of the order parameter, we propose the structural characteristic of ultra-stable glasses: Although globally disordered evaluated by any single symmetry, they are rich of ordered particles and effectively `globally ordered' with crystal-like density fluctuations., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: Medical image datasets in the real world are often unlabeled and imbalanced, and Semi-Supervised Object Detection (SSOD) can utilize unlabeled data to improve an object detector. However, existing approaches predominantly assumed that the unlabeled data and test data do not contain out-of-distribution (OOD) classes. The few open-set semi-supervised object detection methods have two weaknesses: first, the class imbalance is not considered; second, the OOD instances are distinguished and simply discarded during pseudo-labeling. In this paper, we consider the open-set semi-supervised object detection problem which leverages unlabeled data that contain OOD classes to improve object detection for medical images. Our study incorporates two key innovations: Category Control Embed (CCE) and out-of-distribution Detection Fusion Classifier (OODFC). CCE is designed to tackle dataset imbalance by constructing a Foreground information Library, while OODFC tackles open-set challenges by integrating the ``unknown'' information into basic pseudo-labels. Our method outperforms the state-of-the-art SSOD performance, achieving a 4.25 mAP improvement on the public Parasite dataset.

26. Empowering Over-the-Air Personalized Federated Learning via RIS

Abstract: Over-the-air computation (AirComp) integrates analog communication with task-oriented computation, serving as a key enabling technique for communication-efficient federated learning (FL) over wireless networks. However, AirComp-enabled FL (AirFL) with a single global consensus model fails to address the data heterogeneity in real-life FL scenarios with non-independent and identically distributed local datasets. In this paper, we introduce reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology to enable efficient personalized AirFL, mitigating the data heterogeneity issue. First, we achieve statistical interference elimination across different clusters in the personalized AirFL framework via RIS phase shift configuration. Then, we propose two personalized aggregation schemes involving power control and denoising factor design from the perspectives of first- and second-order moments, respectively, to enhance the FL convergence. Abstract: A force field is a critical component in molecular dynamics simulations for computational drug discovery. It must achieve high accuracy within the constraints of molecular mechanics' (MM) limited functional forms, which offers high computational efficiency. With the rapid expansion of synthetically accessible chemical space, traditional look-up table approaches face significant challenges. In this study, we address this issue using a modern data-driven approach, developing ByteFF, an Amber-compatible force field for drug-like molecules. To create ByteFF, we generated an expansive and highly diverse molecular dataset at the B3LYP-D3(BJ)/DZVP level of theory. This dataset includes 2.4 million optimized molecular fragment geometries with analytical Hessian matrices, along with 3.2 million torsion profiles. We then trained an edge-augmented, symmetry-preserving molecular graph neural network (GNN) on this dataset, employing a carefully optimized training strategy. Our model predicts all bonded and non-bonded MM force field parameters for drug-like molecules simultaneously across a broad chemical space. ByteFF demonstrates state-of-the-art performance on various benchmark datasets, excelling in predicting relaxed geometries, torsional energy profiles, and conformational energies and forces. Abstract: In this paper, we propose a multi-user green semantic communication system facilitated by a probabilistic knowledge graph (PKG). By integrating probability into the knowledge graph, we enable probabilistic semantic communication (PSC) and represent semantic information accordingly. On this basis, a semantic compression model designed for multi-user downlink task-oriented communication is introduced, utilizing the semantic compression ratio (SCR) as a parameter to connect the computation and communication processes of information transmission. Based on the rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) technology, we derive mathematical expressions for system transmission energy consumption and related formulations. Subsequently, the multi-user green semantic communication system is modeled and the optimal problem with the goal of minimizing system energy consumption comprehensively considering the computation and communication process under given constrains is formulated. In order to address the optimal problem, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm that tackles sub-problems of power allocation and beamforming design, semantic compression ratio, and computation capacity allocation. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of our approach, demonstrating the superiority of our system over methods using Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) instead of RSMA, and highlighting the benefits of our PSC compression model.

Abstract: Video quality assessment (VQA) is a crucial task in the development of video compression standards, as it directly impacts the viewer experience. This paper presents the results of the Compressed Video Quality Assessment challenge, held in conjunction with the Advances in Image Manipulation (AIM) workshop at ECCV 2024. The challenge aimed to evaluate the performance of VQA methods on a diverse dataset of 459 videos, encoded with 14 codecs of various compression standards (AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265, AV1, and VVC/H.266) and containing a comprehensive collection of compression artifacts. To measure the methods performance, we employed traditional correlation coefficients between their predictions and subjective scores, which were collected via large-scale crowdsourced pairwise human comparisons. For training purposes, participants were provided with the Compressed Video Quality Assessment Dataset (CVQAD), a previously developed dataset of 1022 videos. Up to 30 participating teams registered for the challenge, while we report the results of 6 teams, which submitted valid final solutions and code for reproducing the results. Moreover, we calculated and present the performance of state-of-the-art VQA methods on the developed dataset, providing a comprehensive benchmark for future research. Abstract: Tracking the time evolution of a quantum state allows one to verify the thermalization rate or the propagation speed of correlations in generic quantum systems. Inspired by the energy-time uncertainty principle, bounds have been demonstrated on the maximal speed at which a quantum state can change, resulting in immediate and practical tasks. Based on a programmable superconducting quantum processor, we test the dynamics of various emulated quantum mechanical systems encompassing single- and many-body states. We show that one can test the known quantum speed limits and that modifying a single Hamiltonian parameter allows the observation of the crossover of the different bounds on the dynamics. We also unveil the observation of minimal quantum speed limits in addition to more common maximal ones, i.e., the lowest rate of change of a unitarily evolved quantum state. 31. A Short Review and Evaluation of SAM2's Performance in 3D CT Image Segmentation

Abstract: Since the release of Segment Anything 2 (SAM2), the medical imaging community has been actively evaluating its performance for 3D medical image segmentation. However, different studies have employed varying evaluation pipelines, resulting in conflicting outcomes that obscure a clear understanding of SAM2's capabilities and potential applications. We shortly review existing benchmarks and point out that the SAM2 paper clearly outlines a zero-shot evaluation pipeline, which simulates user clicks iteratively for up to eight iterations. We reproduced this interactive annotation simulation on 3D CT datasets and provided the results and code~\url{https://github.com/Project-MONAI/VISTA}. Our findings reveal that directly applying SAM2 on 3D medical imaging in a zero-shot manner is far from satisfactory. It is prone to generating false positives when foreground objects disappear, and annotating more slices cannot fully offset this tendency. For smaller single-connected objects like kidney and aorta, SAM2 performs reasonably well but for most organs it is still far behind state-of-the-art 3D annotation methods. More research and innovation are needed for 3D medical imaging community to use SAM2 correctly.

Abstract: The operation of upcoming ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray, gamma-ray, and neutrino radio-detection experiments, like the Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND), poses significant computational challenges involving the production of numerous simulations of particle showers and their detection, and a high data throughput. GRANDlib is an open-source software tool designed to meet these challenges. 34. TaSL: Continual Dialog State Tracking via Task Skill Localization and Consolidation

Abstract: A practical dialogue system requires the capacity for ongoing skill acquisition and adaptability to new tasks while preserving prior knowledge. However, current methods for Continual Dialogue State Tracking (DST), a crucial function of dialogue systems, struggle with the catastrophic forgetting issue and knowledge transfer between tasks. We present TaSL, a novel framework for task skill localization and consolidation that enables effective knowledge transfer without relying on memory replay. TaSL uses a novel group-wise technique to pinpoint task-specific and task-shared areas. Additionally, a fine-grained skill consolidation strategy protects task-specific knowledge from being forgotten while updating shared knowledge for bi-directional knowledge transfer. As a result, TaSL strikes a balance between preserving previous knowledge and excelling at new tasks. Comprehensive experiments on various backbones highlight the significant performance improvements of TaSL over existing state-of-the-art methods. 35. Cross-composition Feature Disentanglement for Compositional Zero-shot Learning

Abstract: Disentanglement of visual features of primitives (i.e., attributes and objects) has shown exceptional results in Compositional Zero-shot Learning (CZSL). However, due to the feature divergence of an attribute (resp. object) when combined with different objects (resp. attributes), it is challenging to learn disentangled primitive features that are general across different compositions. To this end, we propose the solution of cross-composition feature disentanglement, which takes multiple primitive-sharing compositions as inputs and constrains the disentangled primitive features to be general across these compositions. More specifically, we leverage a compositional graph to define the overall primitive-sharing relationships between compositions, and build a task-specific architecture upon the recently successful large pre-trained vision-language model (VLM) CLIP, with dual cross-composition disentangling adapters (called L-Adapter and V-Adapter) inserted into CLIP's frozen text and image encoders, respectively. Evaluation on three popular CZSL benchmarks shows that our proposed solution significantly improves the performance of CZSL, and its components have been verified by solid ablation studies., Comment: work in progress

Abstract: Detecting primordial fluctuations from the cosmic dark ages requires extremely large low-frequency radio telescope arrays deployed on the far side of the Moon. The antenna of such an array must be lightweight, easily storable and transportable, deployable on a large scale, durable, and capable of good electrical performance. A membrane antenna is an excellent candidate to meet these criteria. We study the design of a low-frequency membrane antenna for a lunar-based low-frequency (<30 MHz) radio telescope constructed from polyimide film widely used in aerospace applications, owing to its excellent dielectric properties and high stability as a substrate material. We first design and optimize an antenna in free space through dipole deformation and coupling principles, then simulate an antenna on the lunar surface with a simple lunar soil model, yielding an efficiency greater than 90% in the range of 12-19 MHz and greater than 10% in the range of 5-35 MHz. The antenna inherits the omni-directional radiation pattern of a simple dipole antenna in the 5-30 MHz frequency band, giving a large field of view and allowing detection of the 21 cm global signal when used alone. A demonstration prototype is constructed, and its measured electrical property is found to be consistent with simulated results using |S11| measurements. 37. G2Face: High-Fidelity Reversible Face Anonymization via Generative and Geometric Priors

Abstract: Reversible face anonymization, unlike traditional face pixelization, seeks to replace sensitive identity information in facial images with synthesized alternatives, preserving privacy without sacrificing image clarity. Traditional methods, such as encoder-decoder networks, often result in significant loss of facial details due to their limited learning capacity. Additionally, relying on latent manipulation in pre-trained GANs can lead to changes in ID-irrelevant attributes, adversely affecting data utility due to GAN inversion inaccuracies. This paper introduces G\textsuperscript{2}Face, which leverages both generative and geometric priors to enhance identity manipulation, achieving high-quality reversible face anonymization without compromising data utility. We utilize a 3D face model to extract geometric information from the input face, integrating it with a pre-trained GAN-based decoder. This synergy of generative and geometric priors allows the decoder to produce realistic anonymized faces with consistent geometry. Moreover, multi-scale facial features are extracted from the original face and combined with the decoder using our novel identity-aware feature fusion blocks (IFF). This integration enables precise blending of the generated facial patterns with the original ID-irrelevant features, resulting in accurate identity manipulation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms existing state-of-the-art techniques in face anonymization and recovery, while preserving high data utility. 38. Obtaining Optimal Spiking Neural Network in Sequence Learning via CRNN-SNN Conversion

Abstract: Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are becoming a promising alternative to conventional artificial neural networks (ANNs) due to their rich neural dynamics and the implementation of energy-efficient neuromorphic chips. However, the non-differential binary communication mechanism makes SNN hard to converge to an ANN-level accuracy. When SNN encounters sequence learning, the situation becomes worse due to the difficulties in modeling long-range dependencies. To overcome these difficulties, researchers developed variants of LIF neurons and different surrogate gradients but still failed to obtain good results when the sequence became longer (e.g., $>$500). Unlike them, we obtain an optimal SNN in sequence learning by directly mapping parameters from a quantized CRNN. We design two sub-pipelines to support the end-to-end conversion of different structures in neural networks, which is called CNN-Morph (CNN $\rightarrow$ QCNN $\rightarrow$ BIFSNN) and RNN-Morph (RNN $\rightarrow$ QRNN $\rightarrow$ RBIFSNN). Using conversion pipelines and the s-analog encoding method, the conversion error of our framework is zero. Furthermore, we give the theoretical and experimental demonstration of the lossless CRNN-SNN conversion. Our results show the effectiveness of our method over short and long timescales tasks compared with the state-of-the-art learning- and conversion-based methods. We reach the highest accuracy of 99.16% (0.46 $\uparrow$) on S-MNIST, 94.95% (3.95 $\uparrow$) on PS-MNIST (sequence length of 784) respectively, and the lowest loss of 0.057 (0.013 $\downarrow$) within 8 time-steps in collision avoidance dataset., Comment: Accepted by 33rd International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks

Abstract: In recent years, video action recognition, as a fundamental task in the field of video understanding, has been deeply explored by numerous researchers.Most traditional video action recognition methods typically involve converting videos into three-dimensional data that encapsulates both spatial and temporal information, subsequently leveraging prevalent image understanding models to model and analyze these data. However,these methods have significant drawbacks. Firstly, when delving into video action recognition tasks, image understanding models often need to be adapted accordingly in terms of model architecture and preprocessing for these spatiotemporal tasks; Secondly, dealing with high-dimensional data often poses greater challenges and incurs higher time costs compared to its lower-dimensional counterparts.To bridge the gap between image-understanding and video-understanding tasks while simplifying the complexity of video comprehension, we introduce a novel video representation architecture, Flatten, which serves as a plug-and-play module that can be seamlessly integrated into any image-understanding network for efficient and effective 3D temporal data modeling.Specifically, by applying specific flattening operations (e.g., row-major transform), 3D spatiotemporal data is transformed into 2D spatial information, and then ordinary image understanding models are used to capture temporal dynamic and spatial semantic information, which in turn accomplishes effective and efficient video action recognition. Abstract: In the pursuit of enhancing domain-specific Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) emerges as a promising solution to mitigate issues such as hallucinations, outdated knowledge, and limited expertise in highly specialized queries. However, existing approaches to RAG fall short by neglecting system state variables, which are crucial for ensuring adaptive control, retrieval halting, and system convergence. In this paper, we introduce the TC-RAG through rigorous proof, a novel framework that addresses these challenges by incorporating a Turing Complete System to manage state variables, thereby enabling more efficient and accurate knowledge retrieval. By leveraging a memory stack system with adaptive retrieval, reasoning, and planning capabilities, TC-RAG not only ensures the controlled halting of retrieval processes but also mitigates the accumulation of erroneous knowledge via Push and Pop actions. In the case study of the medical domain, our extensive experiments on real-world healthcare datasets demonstrate the superiority of TC-RAG over existing methods in accuracy by over 7.20\%. 41. StylePrompter: Enhancing Domain Generalization with Test-Time Style Priors

Abstract: In real-world applications, the sample distribution at the inference stage often differs from the one at the training stage, causing performance degradation of trained deep models. The research on domain generalization (DG) aims to develop robust algorithms that can improve the generalized performance in unseen domains by training on a few domains. However, the domain-agnostic vision model, trained on a limited number of domains using traditional domain generalization methods, cannot guarantee its effectiveness in dealing with unseen domains. The introduction of language can break the closed cognition space of the vision model, providing additional semantic information that cannot be inferred from vision-only datasets. In this paper, we propose to overcome the challenge in previous DG methods by introducing the style prompt in the language modality to adapt the trained model dynamically. In particular, we train a style prompter to extract style information of the current image into an embedding in the token embedding space and place it in front of the candidate category words as prior knowledge to prompt the model. Our open space partition of the style token embedding space and the hand-crafted style regularization enable the trained style prompter to handle data from unknown domains effectively. Extensive experiments verify the effectiveness of our method and demonstrate state-of-the-art performances on multiple public datasets. Codes will be available after the acceptance of this paper.

Abstract: Using $(10087\pm44)\times10^6J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we search for the rare decay $J/\psi \to \gamma D^0+c.c.$ for the first time. No obvious signal is observed and the upper limit on the branching fraction is determined to be ${\cal B}(J/\psi \to \gamma D^{0}+c.c.)< 9.1 \times 10^{-8}$ at 90\% confidence level.

43. Task-Aware Dynamic Transformer for Efficient Arbitrary-Scale Image Super-Resolution

Abstract: Arbitrary-scale super-resolution (ASSR) aims to learn a single model for image super-resolution at arbitrary magnifying scales. Existing ASSR networks typically comprise an off-the-shelf scale-agnostic feature extractor and an arbitrary scale upsampler. These feature extractors often use fixed network architectures to address different ASSR inference tasks, each of which is characterized by an input image and an upsampling scale. However, this overlooks the difficulty variance of super-resolution on different inference scenarios, where simple images or small SR scales could be resolved with less computational effort than difficult images or large SR scales. To tackle this difficulty variability, in this paper, we propose a Task-Aware Dynamic Transformer (TADT) as an input-adaptive feature extractor for efficient image ASSR. Our TADT consists of a multi-scale feature extraction backbone built upon groups of Multi-Scale Transformer Blocks (MSTBs) and a Task-Aware Routing Controller (TARC). The TARC predicts the inference paths within feature extraction backbone, specifically selecting MSTBs based on the input images and SR scales. The prediction of inference path is guided by a new loss function to trade-off the SR accuracy and efficiency. Experiments demonstrate that, when working with three popular arbitrary-scale upsamplers, our TADT achieves state-of-the-art ASSR performance when compared with mainstream feature extractors, but with relatively fewer computational costs. 44. Beyond KAN: Introducing KarSein for Adaptive High-Order Feature Interaction Modeling in CTR Prediction

Abstract: Modeling feature interactions is crucial for click-through rate (CTR) prediction, particularly when it comes to high-order explicit interactions. Traditional methods struggle with this task because they often predefine a maximum interaction order, which relies heavily on prior knowledge and can limit the model's effectiveness. Additionally, modeling high-order interactions typically leads to increased computational costs. Therefore, the challenge lies in adaptively modeling high-order feature interactions while maintaining efficiency. To address this issue, we introduce Kolmogorov-Arnold Represented Sparse Efficient Interaction Network (KarSein), designed to optimize both predictive accuracy and computational efficiency. We firstly identify limitations of directly applying Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KAN) to CTR and then introduce KarSein to overcome these issues. It features a novel architecture that reduces the computational costs of KAN and supports embedding vectors as feature inputs. Additionally, KarSein employs guided symbolic regression to address the challenge of KAN in spontaneously learning multiplicative relationships. Extensive experiments demonstrate KarSein's superior performance, achieving significant predictive accuracy with minimal computational overhead. Furthermore, KarSein maintains strong global explainability while enabling the removal of redundant features, resulting in a sparse network structure. 45. Unsupervised Part Discovery via Dual Representation Alignment

Abstract: Object parts serve as crucial intermediate representations in various downstream tasks, but part-level representation learning still has not received as much attention as other vision tasks. Previous research has established that Vision Transformer can learn instance-level attention without labels, extracting high-quality instance-level representations for boosting downstream tasks. In this paper, we achieve unsupervised part-specific attention learning using a novel paradigm and further employ the part representations to improve part discovery performance. Specifically, paired images are generated from the same image with different geometric transformations, and multiple part representations are extracted from these paired images using a novel module, named PartFormer. These part representations from the paired images are then exchanged to improve geometric transformation invariance. Subsequently, the part representations are aligned with the feature map extracted by a feature map encoder, achieving high similarity with the pixel representations of the corresponding part regions and low similarity in irrelevant regions. Finally, the geometric and semantic constraints are applied to the part representations through the intermediate results in alignment for part-specific attention learning, encouraging the PartFormer to focus locally and the part representations to explicitly include the information of the corresponding parts. Moreover, the aligned part representations can further serve as a series of reliable detectors in the testing phase, predicting pixel masks for part discovery. Abstract: New particles beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, such as axions, can be effectively searched through their interactions with electrons. We use the large liquid xenon detector PandaX-4T to search for novel electronic recoil signals induced by solar axions, neutrinos with anomalous magnetic moment, axion-like particles, dark photons, and light fermionic dark matter. A detailed background model is established with the latest datasets with 1.54 $\rm tonne \cdot year$ exposure. No significant excess above the background has been observed, and we have obtained competitive constraints for axion couplings, neutrino magnetic moment, and fermionic dark matter interactions.

47. Improved 3D Whole Heart Geometry from Sparse CMR Slices

Abstract: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging and computed tomography (CT) are two common non-invasive imaging methods for assessing patients with cardiovascular disease. CMR typically acquires multiple sparse 2D slices, with unavoidable respiratory motion artefacts between slices, whereas CT acquires isotropic dense data but uses ionising radiation. In this study, we explore the combination of Slice Shifting Algorithm (SSA), Spatial Transformer Network (STN), and Label Transformer Network (LTN) to: 1) correct respiratory motion between segmented slices, and 2) transform sparse segmentation data into dense segmentation. All combinations were validated using synthetic motion-corrupted CMR slice segmentation generated from CT in 1699 cases, where the dense CT serves as the ground truth. In 199 testing cases, SSA-LTN achieved the best results for Dice score and Huasdorff distance (94.0% and 4.7 mm respectively, average over 5 labels) but gave topological errors in 8 cases. STN was effective as a plug-in tool for correcting all topological errors with minimal impact on overall performance (93.5% and 5.0 mm respectively). SSA also proves to be a valuable plug-in tool, enhancing performance over both STN-based and LTN-based models. Abstract: P-wave superconductors hold immense promise for both fundamental physics and practical applications due to their unusual pairing symmetry and potential topological superconductivity. However, the exploration of the p-wave superconductors has proved to be a complex endeavor. Not only are they rare in nature but also the identification of p-wave superconductors has been an arduous task in history. For example, phase-sensitive measurement, an experimental technique which can provide conclusive evidence for unconventional pairing, has not been implemented successfully to identify p-wave superconductors. Here, we study a recently discovered family of superconductors, A2Cr3As3 (A = K, Rb, Cs), which were proposed theoretically to be a candidate of p-wave superconductors. We fabricate superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) on exfoliated K2Cr3As3, and perform the phase-sensitive measurement. We observe that such SQUIDs exhibit a pronounced second-order harmonic component sin(2{\phi}) in the current-phase relation, suggesting the admixture of 0- and {\pi}-phase. By carefully examining the magnetic field dependence of the oscillation patterns of critical current and Shapiro steps under microwave irradiation, we reveal a crossover from 0- to {\pi}-dominating phase state and conclude that the existence of the {\pi}-phase is in favor of the p-wave pairing symmetry in K2Cr3As3.

49. Bilayer TeO2: The First Oxide Semiconductor with Symmetric Sub-5-nm NMOS and PMOS

Abstract: Wide bandgap oxide semiconductors are very promising channel candidates for next-generation electronics due to their large-area manufacturing, high-quality dielectrics, low contact resistance, and low leakage current. However, the absence of ultra-short gate length (Lg) p-type transistors has restricted their application in future complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) integration. Inspired by the successfully grown high-hole mobility bilayer (BL) beta tellurium dioxide (\b{eta}-TeO2), we investigate the performance of sub-5-nm-Lg BL \b{eta}-TeO2 field-effect transistors (FETs) by utilizing first-principles quantum transport simulation. The distinctive anisotropy of BL \b{eta}-TeO2 yields different transport properties. In the y-direction, both the sub-5-nm-Lg n-type and p-type BL \b{eta}-TeO2 FETs can fulfill the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) criteria for high-performance (HP) devices, which are superior to the reported oxide FETs (only n-type). Remarkably, we for the first time demonstrate the existence of the NMOS and PMOS symmetry in sub-5-nm-Lg oxide semiconductor FETs. As to the x-direction, the n-type BL \b{eta}-TeO2 FETs satisfy both the ITRS HP and low-power (LP) requirements with Lg down to 3 nm. Consequently, our work shed light on the tremendous prospects of BL \b{eta}-TeO2 for CMOS application.

50. Stable magic angle in twisted Kane-Mele materials

Abstract: We propose that flat bands and van Hove singularities near the magic angle can be stabilized against angle disorder in the twisted Kane-Mele model. With continuum model and maximally localized Wannier function approaches, we identify a quadratic dispersion relationship between the bandwidth, interaction parameters versus the twist angle, in contrast to twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). Introducing Kane-Mele spin-orbit coupling to TBG greatly reduces the fractional Chern insulator indicator and enhances the stability of fractional Chern states near the magic angle, as confirmed by exact diagonalization calculations. Moreover, in twisted bilayer Pt$_2$HgSe$_3$ with intrinsic Kane-Mele spin-orbit coupling, we identify a topological flat band at a large twist angle around 4 degrees., Comment: 5+6 pages, 4+2 figures
