1. An accelerator experiment for junior and senior high school students to improve students’ involvement in fundamental physics

Abstract: In Japan, research activities by junior and senior high school students show an upward trend. However, there are limited examples of research activities in the field of elementary particles and atoms. This is due to the difficulty associated with procuring research tools such as accelerators or particle detectors. Therefore, we hosted the "Accel Kitchen" in 2018 and 2019 at Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center (CYRIC) in Tohoku University where junior and senior high school students could participate in ongoing research of particle and atomic physics. At each workshop, 12 junior and senior high school students participated in the beam experiment, including the production of francium atoms (Fr) by the fusion reaction of oxygen and gold, optimizing the transport of the ion beam and identifying the alpha decay nuclei, and laser trapping of Fr for two days. Each group that was involved in the experiment was supported by researchers and university students who acted as mentors. 2. Development of a Laser Frequency Stabilization and an Optical Transmission System for the Francium Electric Dipole Moment Search

Abstract: We developed a laser frequency stabilization and an optical fiber transmission system for the the francium electric dipole moment search. The absolute accuracy of a laser frequency stabilization scheme using a state-of-the-art commercial wavelength meter was 0.48 MHz at ±2 nm and -1.33 MHz at ±200 nm from calibration wavelength, respectively, and the frequency instability is below 10-9 with a standard deviation of 0.56 MHz over 60 hours. We also demonstrated that a 400 m long fiber laid between laboratories can transmit 30 mW of trapping laser light, which is sufficient for a magneto-optical trapping of francium. The polarization crosstalk in the fiber was stable at -25 dB over 12 hours of measurement.

Abstract: We demonstrated a frequency offset locking between two laser sources using a waveguide-type electro-optic modulator (EOM) with 10th-order sidebands for magneto-optical trapping of Fr atoms. The frequency locking error signal was successfully obtained by performing delayed self-homodyne detection of the beat signal between the repumping frequency and the 10th-order sideband component of the trapping light. Sweeping the trapping-light and repumping-light frequencies with keeping its frequency difference of 46 GHz was confirmed over 1 GHz by monitoring the Doppler absorption profile of I2. This technique enables us to search for a resonance frequency of magneto-optical trapping of Fr., 6 pages, 6 figures

5. Electron beam ion trap for study of fusion reactions in nuclear astrophysics

Abstract: The laboratory condition where charged particle fusion reactions have been done is not exactly the same as that of stellar condition. To probe details of reaction and to test the prediction of standard solar model we need more precise data for charged particle fusion experiments in the laboratories. We propose several experimental approaches to reduce the ambiguity of the estimation of screening potential value which is crucial for obtaining the astrophysical S-factor. Experiment with bare target and bare beam interaction will be done by using proposed Electron Beam Ion Trap apparatus (NARITA).

Abstract: The construction and use of a dual radiator Ring Imaging Cerenkov(RICH) detector is described. This instrument was developed for the HERMES experiment at DESY which emphasizes measurements of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. It provides particle identification for pions, kaons, and protons in the momentum range from 2 to 15 GeV, which is essential to these studies. The instrument uses two radiators, C4F10, a heavy fluorocarbon gas, and a wall of silica aerogel tiles. The use of aerogel in a RICH detector has only recently become possible with the development of clear, large homogeneous and hydrophobic aerogel. A lightweight mirror was constructed using a newly perfected technique to make resin-coated carbon-fiber surfaces of optical quality. The photon detector consists of 1934 photomultiplier tubes for each detector half, held in a soft steel matrix to provide shielding against the residual field of the main spectrometer magnet., 25 pages, 23 figures

Abstract: The search for the electric-dipole moment (EDM) of laser-cooled francium (Fr) atoms could lead to a measurement for the electron EDM. It is predicted that the electron EDM would be enhanced by approximately three orders of magnitude in heavy atoms such as Fr. Laser-cooling and trapping techniques are expected to suppress statistical and systematic errors in precision measurements. The magneto-optical trap was achieved using stable rubidium in a developing factory of laser-cooled radioactive atoms. In light of the results from the rubidium experiments, we found that an upgrade of each apparatus is preferred for Fr trapping.

Abstract: For the measurement of the electron electric dipole moment using Fr atoms, a Fr ion-atom conversion is one of the most critical process. An ion-atom converter based on the "orthotropic" type of Fr source has been developed. This converter is able to convert a few keV Fr ion beam to a thermal atomic beam using a cycle of the surface ionization and neutralization. In this article, the development of the converter is reported.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A|| in photoproduction of pairs of hadrons with high transverse momentum pT. Data were accumulated by the HERMES experiment using a 27.5 GeV polarized positron beam and a polarized hydrogen target internal to the HERA storage ring. For h^+h^- pairs with _(pT)^(h1)>1.5GeV/c and _(pT)^(h2)>1.0GeV/c, the measured asymmetry is A_(||) = -0.28±0.12(stat)±0.02(syst). This negative value is in contrast to the positive asymmetries typically measured in deep inelastic scattering from protons, and is interpreted to arise from a positive gluon polarization.

Abstract: Cross section ratios for deep-inelastic scattering from 14N and 3He with respect to 2H have been measured by the HERMES experiment at DESY using a 27.5 GeV positron beam. The data cover a range in the Bjorken scaling variable x between 0.013 and 0.65, while the negative squared four-momentum transfer Q^2 varies from 0.5 to 15 GeV^2. The data are compared to measurements performed by NMC, E665, and SLAC on 4He and 12C, and are found to be different for x < 0.06 and Q^2 < 1.5 GeV^2. The observed difference is attributed to an A-dependence of the ratio R = sigma_L / sigma_T of longitudinal to transverse deep-inelastic scattering cross sections at low x and low Q^2.

Abstract: Exclusive incoherent electroproduction of the ρ0(770) meson from 1H, 2H, 3He, and 14N targets has been studied by the HERMES experiment at squared four-momentum transfer Q^2>0.4 GeV^2 and positron energy loss ν from 9 to 20 GeV. The ratio of the 14N to 1H cross sections per nucleon, known as the nuclear transparency, was found to decrease with increasing coherence length of quark-antiquark fluctuations of the virtual photon. The data provide clear evidence of the interaction of the quark-antiquark fluctuations with the nuclear medium.

Abstract: The HERMES experiment is collecting data on inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of polarised positrons from polarised targets of H, D, and He. These data give information on the spin structure of the nucleon. This paper describes the forward angle spectrometer built for this purpose. The spectrometer includes numerous tracking chambers (micro-strip gas chambers, drift and proportional chambers) in front of and behind a 1.3 T.m magnetic field, as well as an extensive set of detectors for particle identification (a lead-glass calorimeter, a pre-shower detector, a transition radiation detector, and a threshold Cherenkov detector). Two of the main features of the spectrometer are its good acceptance and identification of both positrons and hadrons, in particular pions. These characteristics, together with the purity of the targets, are allowing HERMES to make unique contributions to the understanding of how the spins of the quarks contribute to the spin of the nucleon., 37 pages, 32 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: The finite value of an electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) provides the direct evidence for the violation of time reversal symmetry. Fr atoms, whose enhancement factor is 895, trapped by laser cooling and trapping techniques are one of the strongest candidates for measuring the eEDM. We are constructing a beamline for measuring the eEDM using laser- cooled Fr atoms at the Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center. We have developed laser light sources including the frequency stabilization system and a magneto-optical trap system for Fr atoms. As the Fr production requires the cyclotron operation, we also use Rb atoms whose chemical properties are similar to those of the Fr atoms. Thus, the Rb beam is utilized for optimizing the operation parameters of the entire apparatus. We have also developed the laser light sources for Rb atoms and observed the beat signal for frequency stabilization of the source using the frequency offset locking method.

Abstract: We have developed the neutron polarization measurement system to perform the first polarization-transfer measurement for the exclusive [Formula: see text] reaction. For the neutron polarization measurement, we have reconstructed the neutron polarimeter NPOL3. The NPOL3 system has been calibrated by using the polarized neutron from the [Formula: see text] reaction, and the resulting effective analyzing power is [Formula: see text]. For the exclusive measurement, the Large Acceptance Spectrometer (LAS) has been used for the recoil proton detection. The energy resolution of 6 MeV is achieved for separation energy, which is sufficient to separate the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] orbits for light nuclei.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for transitions of known weak strength were measured with the (3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV on targets of 12C, 13C, 18O, 26Mg, 58Ni, 60Ni, 90Zr, 118Sn, 120Sn and 208Pb. Using this data, it is shown the proportionalities between strengths and cross sections for this probe follow simple trends as a function of mass number. These trends can be used to confidently determine Gamow-Teller strength distributions in nuclei for which the proportionality cannot be calibrated via beta-decay strengths. Although theoretical calculations in distorted-wave Born approximation overestimate the data, they allow one to understand the main experimental features and to predict deviations from the simple trends observed in some of the transitions., 4 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: We plan to measure the permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the elec- tron, which has the sensitivity to the CP violation in theories beyond the standard model by using the laser-cooled francium (Fr) atom. This paper reports the present status of the EDM measurement system. A high voltage application system was constructed in order to produce the strong electric field (100 kV /cm) needed for the experiment. After condi- tioning, the leakage current was 10 pA when a high voltage of 43 kV was applied. Also, a drift of an environmental field was measured at the planned location of the Fr-EDM experiment. The drift is suppressed at present down to the level of 10 pT by installing a 4-layer magnetic shield. Improvements are still needed to reach the required field stability of 1 fT.

Abstract: A single-spin asymmetry in the distribution of exclusively produced pi^+ mesons azimuthally around the virtual photon direction relative to the lepton scattering plane has been measured for the first time in deep-inelastic scattering of positrons off longitudinally polarized protons. Integrated over the experimental acceptance, the sin \phi moment of the polarization asymmetry of the cross section is measured to be -0.18 +/- 0.05 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (syst.). The asymmetry is also studied as a function of the relevant kinematic variables, and its magnitude is found to grow with decreasing x and increasing -t and vanish at t -> t_min (where x is the Bjorken scaling variable and t is the squared four-momentum transferred to the nucleon)., Comment: PLB accepted version, 6 pages, 4 figures, LaTex (revtex4), corrected typo

Abstract: The dependence on Q^2 (the negative square of the 4-momentum of the exchanged virtual photon) of the generalised Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the proton has been measured in the range 1.2 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 12 GeV^2 by scattering longitudinally polarised positrons on a longitudinally polarised hydrogen gas target. The contributions of the nucleon-resonance and deep-inelastic regions to this integral have been evaluated separately. The latter has been found to dominate for Q^2 > 3 GeV^2, while both contributions are important at low Q^2. The total integral shows no significant deviation from a 1/Q^2 behaviour in the measured Q^2 range, and thus no sign of large effects due to either nucleon-resonance excitations or non-leading twist., 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract: The virtual photon absorption cross section differences [sigma_1/2-sigma_3/2] for the proton and neutron have been determined from measurements of polarised cross section asymmetries in deep inelastic scattering of 27.5 GeV longitudinally polarised positrons from polarised 1H and 3He internal gas targets. The data were collected in the region above the nucleon resonances in the kinematic range nu < 23.5 GeV and 0.8 GeV**2 < Q**2 < 12 GeV**2. For the proton the contribution to the generalised Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral was found to be substantial and must be included for an accurate determination of the full integral. Furthermore the data are consistent with a QCD next-to-leading order fit based on previous deep inelastic scattering data. Abstract: The magnetic state of Fe atoms at or near the interface between Fe74.3Al9.8Si15.9 sendust magnetic thin films and SiO2-based crystallized glass substrate (Fotoceram, Corning Co.) has been examined using conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy. The thicknesses of sputtered films are 0.05–2.0 Μm, and annealing conditions are at 500 ‡C for 1 H. The excellent soft magnetic properties are not obtained for films with a thickness of less than 0.5 Μm. The presence of ferromagnetic Fe atoms with internal magnetic fields of 24.3–24.9 MAm−1 is confirmed at or near the interface, indicating the formation of an Fe-rich phase such as Fe90Si10. The fraction of Fe atoms forming the Fe-rich phase at or near the interface is estimated to be around 20.... The formation of the Fe-rich phase is one of the main reasons for the degradation of the soft magnetic properties of sendust films deposited on SiO2-based crystallized glass substrate, even though the DO3-type ordered structure has also been formed.

Abstract: A laser cooled heavy atom is one of the candidates to search for the permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron due to the enhancement mechanism and its long coherence time. The laser cooled francium (Fr) factory has been constructed to perform the electron EDM search at the Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center, Tohoku University. The present status of Fr production and the EDM measurement system is presented.

31. Impact of time-history terms on reservoir dynamics and prediction accuracy in echo state networks.

Abstract: The echo state network (ESN) is an excellent machine learning model for processing time-series data. This model, utilising the response of a recurrent neural network, called a reservoir, to input signals, achieves high training efficiency. Introducing time-history terms into the neuron model of the reservoir is known to improve the time-series prediction performance of ESN, yet the reasons for this improvement have not been quantitatively explained in terms of reservoir dynamics characteristics. Therefore, we hypothesised that the performance enhancement brought about by time-history terms could be explained by delay capacity, a recently proposed metric for assessing the memory performance of reservoirs. To test this hypothesis, we conducted comparative experiments using ESN models with time-history terms, namely leaky integrator ESNs (LI-ESN) and chaotic echo state networks (ChESN). The results suggest that compared with ESNs without time-history terms, the reservoir dynamics of LI-ESN and ChESN can maintain diversity and stability while possessing higher delay capacity, leading to their superior performance. Explaining ESN performance through dynamical metrics are crucial for evaluating the numerous ESN architectures recently proposed from a general perspective and for the development of more sophisticated architectures, and this study contributes to such efforts., (© 2024. 32. Sparse-firing regularization methods for spiking neural networks with time-to-first-spike coding.

Abstract: The training of multilayer spiking neural networks (SNNs) using the error backpropagation algorithm has made significant progress in recent years. Among the various training schemes, the error backpropagation method that directly uses the firing time of neurons has attracted considerable attention because it can realize ideal temporal coding. This method uses time-to-first-spike (TTFS) coding, in which each neuron fires at most once, and this restriction on the number of firings enables information to be processed at a very low firing frequency. This low firing frequency increases the energy efficiency of information processing in SNNs. However, only an upper limit has been provided for TTFS-coded SNNs, and the information-processing capability of SNNs at lower firing frequencies has not been fully investigated. In this paper, we propose two spike-timing-based sparse-firing (SSR) regularization methods to further reduce the firing frequency of TTFS-coded SNNs. Both methods are characterized by the fact that they only require information about the firing timing and associated weights. Abstract: Background: The Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS) is commonly used in screening for major postpartum depression (PPD). We explored the clinical factors associated with score changes., Methods: Mothers (n=1,287) who delivered a single live-born infant in Kokura Medical Center in Japan during 2018-2019 were analyzed. The EPDS-Japanese version was conducted at the first and fourth weeks after childbirth. Scores of ≥9 were considered to indicate an increased risk of PPD., Results: The scores improved during the four-week period (5.03±0.12 to 3.79±0.10). Primiparity, Cesarean section (CS), and a low Apgar score were identified as initial risk factors, however, primiparity remained in the multivariate analysis (aOR 2.02, 95% CI 1.37-2.97). Age ≥35 years was associated with worsened scores (aOR 1.88, 95%CI 1.01-3.51), but CS improved (aOR 0.38, 95%CI 0.21-0.70). Primiparity, CS, and neonatal respiratory support were the initial risk factors, while infant anomaly was a late risk factor in mothers whose infants were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) (aOR 3.35, 95%CI 1.31-8.56). In mothers of infants with an NICU stay of ≥4 weeks, infant anomaly was associated with worsened scores (aOR 6.61, 95%CI 1.11-39.3), while respiratory support was associated with improved scores (aOR 0.09, 95%CI 0.01-0.65). Twenty-six mothrs with worsened scores received psychiatric support; three developed PPD. Two of the three were ≥35 years of age, neither of their infants had anomalies., Conclusion: Maternal aging and infant anomaly were risk factors for PPD. PPD occurred in mothers with worsened EPDS scores after mental care. 34. A Supervised Learning Algorithm for Multilayer Spiking Neural Networks Based on Temporal Coding Toward Energy-Efficient VLSI Processor Design.

Abstract: Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are brain-inspired mathematical models with the ability to process information in the form of spikes. SNNs are expected to provide not only new machine-learning algorithms but also energy-efficient computational models when implemented in very-large-scale integration (VLSI) circuits. In this article, we propose a novel supervised learning algorithm for SNNs based on temporal coding. A spiking neuron in this algorithm is designed to facilitate analog VLSI implementations with analog resistive memory, by which ultrahigh energy efficiency can be achieved. We also propose several techniques to improve the performance on recognition tasks and show that the classification accuracy of the proposed algorithm is as high as that of the state-of-the-art temporal coding SNN algorithms on the MNIST and Fashion-MNIST datasets. Finally, we discuss the robustness of the proposed SNNs against variations that arise from the device manufacturing process and are unavoidable in analog VLSI implementation. We also propose a technique to suppress the effects of variations in the manufacturing process on the recognition performance.

35. Changes of Crocin and Other Crocetin Glycosides in Saffron Through Cooking Models, and Discovery of Rare Crocetin Glycosides in the Yellow Flowers of Freesia Hybrida .

Abstract: Crocetin glycosides such as crocin are noted as functional food materials since the preventive effects of crocin have been reported against chronic disease and cancer. However, it is unclear how these apocarotenoids are structurally changed through cooking for our intake. We examined such changes in crocetin glycosides (crocin, tricrocin, and crocin-3) contained in saffron (stigmas of Crocus sativus ) through cooking models. These glycosides were almost kept stable in boiling for 20 min (a boiled cooking model), while hydrolysis of the ester linkage between glucose and the crocetin aglycone occurred in a grilled cooking model (180°C, 5 min), along with a 13- cis isomerization reaction in a part of crocetin subsequently generated. We further here revealed that the yellow petals of freesia ( Freesia x hybrida ) with yellow flowers accumulate two unique crocetin glycosides, which were identified to be crocetin (mono)neapolitanosyl ester and crocetin dineapolitanosyl ester. A similar result as above was obtained on their changes through the cooking models. Utility applications of the freesia flowers as edible flowers are also suggested in this study. Additionally, we evaluated singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 )-quenching activities of the crocetin glycosides contained in saffron and freesia, and crocetin and 13- cis crocetin contained in the grilled saffron, indicating that they possessed moderate 1 O 2 -quenching activities (IC 50 24-64 μM)., Competing Interests: KS, II, and NM were employed by CaroProTech Corporation. Abstract: Background: ZNF597 , encoding a zinc-finger protein, is the human-specific maternally expressed imprinted gene located on 16p13.3. The parent-of-origin expression of ZNF597 is regulated by the ZNF597 :TSS-DMR, of which only the paternal allele acquires methylation during postimplantation period. Overexpression of ZNF597 may contribute to some of the phenotypes associated with maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 16 (UPD(16)mat), and some patients with UPD(16)mat presenting with Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) phenotype have recently been reported., Methods: A 6-year-old boy presented with prenatal growth restriction, macrocephaly at birth, forehead protrusion in infancy and clinodactyly of the fifth finger. Methylation, expression, microsatellite marker, single nucleotide polymorphism array and trio whole-exome sequencing analyses were conducted., Results: Isolated hypomethylation of the ZNF597 :TSS-DMR and subsequent loss of imprinting and overexpression of ZNF597 were confirmed in the patient. Epigenetic alterations, such as UPD including UPD(16)mat and other methylation defects, were excluded. Pathogenic sequence or copy number variants affecting his phenotypes were not identified, indicating that primary epimutation occurred postzygotically., Conclusion: We report the first case of isolated ZNF597 imprinting defect, showing phenotypic overlap with SRS despite not satisfying the clinical SRS criteria. 37. Model-size reduction for reservoir computing by concatenating internal states through time.

Abstract: Reservoir computing (RC) is a machine learning algorithm that can learn complex time series from data very rapidly based on the use of high-dimensional dynamical systems, such as random networks of neurons, called "reservoirs." To implement RC in edge computing, it is highly important to reduce the amount of computational resources that RC requires. In this study, we propose methods that reduce the size of the reservoir by inputting the past or drifting states of the reservoir to the output layer at the current time step. To elucidate the mechanism of model-size reduction, the proposed methods are analyzed based on information processing capacity proposed by Dambre et al. (Sci Rep 2:514, 2012). In addition, we evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methods on time-series prediction tasks: the generalized Hénon-map and NARMA. On these tasks, we found that the proposed methods were able to reduce the size of the reservoir up to one tenth without a substantial increase in regression error.

38. Is lateral acetabular rotation sufficient to correct anterolateral deficiency in periacetabular reorientation osteotomy? A CT-Based simulation study.

Abstract: Background: Residual acetabular deficiency after periacetabular reorientation osteotomy can result in suboptimal outcome. The optimal algorithm of acetabular fragment correction to achieve normal anterolateral acetabular coverage is not well characterized. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of residual anterolateral deficiency after lateral acetabular rotation and to evaluate the ability of additional sagittal and axial rotation of the acetabulum to normalize the acetabular coverage in periacetabular osteotomy., Methods: We performed computed tomography-based simulated periacetabular osteotomy on 85 patients (85 hips) with hip dysplasia. The acetabular fragment was rotated laterally to achieve a lateral center-edge angle (CEA) of 30°. For hips with residual anterolateral deficiency, which were identified based on the reference interval of the anterior CEA, the acetabulum was further rotated in the sagittal or axial direction in 5-degree increments from 5° to 20°, and the ability of these two manoeuvres to restore a normal anterior CEA was assessed., Results: After lateral acetabular rotation, 16 hips (19%) had residual anterolateral deficiency, 67 hips (79%) had normal acetabular coverage, and 2 hips (2.4%) had acetabular overcoverage. A preoperative anterior CEA <37° predicted residual deficiency (sensitivity, 94%; specificity, 81%). Additional anterior sagittal rotation was more effective than posterior axial rotation in normalizing the anterior CEA, while minimizing the decrease in posterior CEA. The highest number of hips with normal anterior and posterior CEA was noted at 10° sagittal rotation (81%), which was followed by 15° sagittal rotation (63%)., Conclusions: Normal anterolateral coverage was achieved in 79% of patients after rotating the acetabulum laterally. However, lateral rotation of the acetabulum may be insufficient to correct the anterolateral deficiency in patients with an anterior CEA of <37°. 39. Fabrication and Histological Evaluation of Porous Carbonate Apatite Block from Gypsum Block Containing Spherical Phenol Resin as a Porogen.

Abstract: The utility of carbonate apatite (CO 3 Ap) as a bone substitute has been demonstrated. The feasibility of fabricating macroporous CO 3 Ap was evaluated through a two-step dissolution-precipitation reaction using gypsum as the precursor and spherical phenol resin as the porogen. Porogen-containing gypsum was heated to burn out the porogen and to fabricate macroporous structures. Gypsum transformed into CaCO 3 upon immersion in a sodium carbonate solution, while maintaining its macroporous structure. Next, CaCO 3 transformed into CO 3 Ap upon immersion in a Na 2 HPO 4 solution while maintaining its macroporous structure. The utility of the macroporous CO 3 Ap for histologically reconstructing bone defects was evaluated in rabbit femurs. After 4 weeks, a much larger bone was formed inside the macroporous CO 3 Ap than that inside non-macroporous CO 3 Ap and macroporous hydroxyapatite (HAp). A larger amount of bone was observed inside non-macroporous CO 3 Ap than inside macroporous HAp. The bone defects were completely reconstructed within 12 weeks using macroporous CO 3 Ap. In conclusion, macroporous CO 3 Ap has good potential as an ideal bone substitute.

Abstract: Background: Due to anterior bone defects, high and/or posterior placement of an acetabular cup is often required to achieve sufficient coverage in patients with hip dysplasia. We examined whether posterior cup placement affected the postoperative range of motion (ROM) in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA)., Methods: Using computer software, bone coverage and ROM were examined in 32 patients with unilateral osteoarthritis of the hip with Crowe type II or III hip dysplasia. We determined the cup position to satisfy cup center-edge (Cup-CE) angle ≥0° and the required ROM. The cup was placed at the anatomic hip center and moved in 2-mm increments anteroposteriorly and 10-mm increments vertically., Results: At vertical anatomic hip center, less than 68.8% hips fulfilled Cup-CE ≥0° regardless of anteroposterior position. Significantly more hips at higher hip center with posterior cup placement achieved Cup-CE ≥0° than hips at vertical anatomic hip center, and 10 mm higher hip center was the most suitable for achieving bone coverage. However, posterior and superior cup placement significantly decreased the flexion and IR due to early bone impingement, whereas ER and extension were not affected. A smoothing spline curve demonstrated that more posterior cup placement than 4.8 mm and 3.6 mm did not satisfy the required ROM at 10 mm and 20 mm higher hip center, respectively., Conclusions: Posterosuperior cup placement gained more bone coverage but decreased the range of hip flexion and internal rotation. 41. Evaluation of carbonate apatite blocks fabricated from dicalcium phosphate dihydrate blocks for reconstruction of rabbit femoral and tibial defects.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate in vivo behavior of a carbonate apatite (CO 3 Ap) block fabricated by compositional transformation via a dissolution-precipitation reaction using a calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate [DCPD: CaHPO 4 ·2H 2 O] block as a precursor. These blocks were used to reconstruct defects in the femur and tibia of rabbits, using sintered dense hydroxyapatite (HAp) blocks as the control. Both the CO 3 Ap and HAp blocks showed excellent tissue response and good osteoconductivity. HAp block maintained its structure even after 24 weeks of implantation, so no bone replacement of the implant was observed throughout the post-implantation period in either femoral or tibial bone defects. In contrast, CO 3 Ap was resorbed with increasing time after implantation and replaced with new bone. The CO 3 Ap block was resorbed approximately twice as fast at the metaphysis of the proximal tibia than at the epiphysis of the distal femur. The CO 3 Ap block was resorbed at an approximately linear change over time, with complete resorption was estimated by extrapolation of data at approximately 1-1.5 years. Hence, the CO 3 Ap block fabricated in this study has potential value as an ideal artificial bone substitute because of its resorption and subsequent replacement by bone.

Abstract: We demonstrate frequency offset locking between two laser sources using a waveguide-type electro-optic modulator (EOM) with 10th-order sidebands for magneto-optical trapping of Fr atoms. The frequency locking error signal was successfully obtained by performing delayed self-homodyne detection of the beat signal between the repumping frequency and the 10th-order sideband component of the trapping light. Sweeping the trapping-light and repumping-light frequencies with keeping its frequency difference of 46 GHz was confirmed over 1 GHz by monitoring the Doppler absorption profile of I₂. This technique enables us to search for a resonance frequency of magneto-optical trapping of Fr.

43. Restoration of accelerator facilities damaged by Great East Japan Earthquake at Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center, Tohoku University.

Abstract: The Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center (CYRIC) of Tohoku University is a joint-use institution for education and research in a wide variety of fields ranging from physics to medicine. Accelerator facilities at the CYRIC provide opportunities for implementing a broad research program, including medical research using positron emission tomography (PET), with accelerated ions and radioisotopes. At the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, no human injuries occurred and a smooth evacuation was made in the CYRIC, thanks to the anti-earthquake measures such as the renovation of the cyclotron building in 2009 mainly to provide seismic strengthening, fixation of shelves to prevent the falling of objects, and securement of the width of the evacuation route. The preparation of an emergency response manual was also helpful. However, the accelerator facilities were damaged because of strong shaking that continued for a few minutes. For example, two columns on which a 930 cyclotron was placed were damaged, and thereby the 930 cyclotron was inclined. All the elements of beam transport lines were deviated from the beam axis. Some peripheral devices in a HM12 cyclotron were broken. Two shielding doors fell from the carriage onto the floor and blocked the entrances to the rooms. The repair work on the accelerator facilities was started at the end of July 2011. During the repair work, the joint use of the accelerator facilities was suspended. After the repair work was completed, the joint use was re-started at October 2012, one and a half years after the earthquake.

44. The prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli in two species of invasive alien mammals in Japan.

Abstract: The prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in 128 Escherichia coli isolates was investigated in two species of invasive alien mammals (IAMs): the small Asian mongoose (SAM) and Japanese weasel (JW). The SAM is found on the main island of Okinawa, Japan, where a large number of livestock is available, and the JW is present on a small island, where is isolated from the main island, and have a small number of livestock. We focused on the two IAMs, inhabiting under the different environments, and compared their prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant E. coli. In the comparison of the frequencies of antimicrobial-resistant E. coli isolates between the SAM and JW, JW showed significantly higher prevalence of resistance against three drugs, ampicillin, chlortetracycline and nalidixic acid, compared with SAM's test results (P<0.05). The bla(TEM) gene and the aph1 gene were detected in 35 subjects (91%) of ampicillin-resistant isolates and 6 subjects (100%) of kanamycin-resistant isolates, respectively. The tet (A) gene was detected in 62 subjects (46%) of CTC-resistant isolates, and the tet (B) gene was detected in 25 subjects (8%) of those in IAM. The present results suggest that some IAMs were the carrier of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and their genes, and the frequencies of these resistances were different between two IAM species.

45. Long-term performance evaluation of positron emission tomography: analysis and proposal of a maintenance protocol for long-term utilization.

Abstract: Objective: Positron emission tomography (PET) scanners require periodic monitoring in order to maintain scanner performance. The aim of the present study was to examine the deterioration of PET scanner performance caused by aging., Methods: We retrospectively examined PET scanner performance alterations in terms of sensitivity, spatial resolution, false coincidences due to scatter and random coincidences based on 13 years of follow-up data, including data when the PET scanner underwent an overhaul at the 10th year after installation. Sensitivity and scatter fraction were calculated by using cross calibration factor (CCF) measurement data, which are collected routinely. Efficacy of the examining the sensitivity and scatter was confirmed by NEMA measurements. Trans-axial resolution was measured as full width at half-maximum (FWHM) and full width at tenth-maximum (FWTM) at 0-20 cm offset from the field of view (FOV) center at the time of installation, 8 years after installation, and immediately after the overhaul. Random coincidence rate fraction was measured in a wide range of count rates before and after the overhaul., Results and Discussion: The results indicated that the total reduction of sensitivity during the first 10 years was 41% of the initial value in terms of NEMA measurement, and that the annual reduction of sensitivity progressed at a rate of 4.7% per year in terms of CCF measurement data. The changes in sensitivity can be calculated using CCF measurement data. Regarding the spatial resolution, mean FWHM and FWTM values were increased by 1.7 and 3.6%, respectively, in 8 years after installation. The relative scatter fraction was significantly increased compared with that before the overhaul. The random fraction decreased by 10-15% after the overhaul within a certain range of random count rates (1-120 kcps). In the case of our scanner, the parameter that displayed the largest change was the sensitivity, and this change was thought to be caused by the reduction of photomultiplier tube (PMT) gain, although the changes in PMT gain can cause various types of performance deterioration, as investigated in this study., Conclusion: We observed that the sensitivity of our PET scanner generally deteriorated due to aging. Sensitivity monitoring using CCF measurements can be an easy and useful method for monitoring and maintaining the performance of PET scanners against aging. Since the data were obtained from a single scanner, the authors would encourage the initiation of a follow-up study involving various scanners.

Abstract: The effects of intravenous infusion of hypotonic lactated Ringer's (LR: n=14) on plasma volume and venous blood gases were compared to those of hypotonic Ringer's solutions (RS: n=7) in diarrheic Japanese Black breed calves with metabolic acidosis. Venous blood samples were collected immediately before and after, and at 24 hr after the fluid infusion therapy. The LR and RS infusions increased relative plasma volume to 147.1 +/- 25.5% and 134.2 +/- 18.6%, respectively, just after the fluid therapy. The LR infusion induced an increase in the BE value (+5.1 +/- 4.8 mM) at 24 hr compared to that of RS. LR infusion should be explored as a treatment for dehydration and moderate metabolic acidemia caused by naturally occurring diarrhea in calves.
