Abstract

Rapid global changes since the last deglaciation can be well documented in marginal sea sediments, while isolating individual paleoenvironmental signals is still challenging. Here, we identified magnetic minerals and unmixed their variations in sediments from the northwestern South China Sea to decipher environmental variations since the last deglaciation. The variation in the hematite to goethite ratio indicates a relatively drier mid‐Holocene and a wetter early and late Holocene in the Red River catchment. The position shift and intensity variation of Western Pacific Subtropical High may account for the Holocene precipitation changes. A higher chemical weathering intensity accompanied by a relatively more fine‐grained magnetite input during the last deglaciation suggests decoupling of the Asian Summer Monsoon and chemical weathering in the catchment, which might have been caused by the shelf exposure during the deglaciation. In addition, the relative abundance of biogenic magnetite increased with the sea level and possible deep‐water temperature rise. Therefore, magnetic minerals such as hematite, goethite, detrital and biogenic magnetite are markedly potential fingerprints for continent‐ocean environmental changes.

11. Fe-Cu-Zn Isotopic Compositions in Polymetallic Sulfides from Hydrothermal Fields in the Ultraslow-Spreading Southwest Indian Ridge and Geological Inferences.

Abstract

Submarine hydrothermal sulfides from the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) were sampled from three hydrothermal fields, and the Fe-Cu-Zn isotopic compositions were analyzed in this study. The Fe isotopes ranged from −0.011‰ to −1.333‰. We believe the processes controlling the Fe isotope variability in the hydrothermal systems include the sulfide precipitation process, the initial isotopic composition of the hydrothermal fluid, and the temperature during precipitation. Among these factors, the sulfide precipitation process is the dominant one. The Cu isotope compositions of the sulfides varied from −0.364‰ to 0.892‰, indicating that the hydrothermal fluid preferentially leached 65Cu in the early stages and that hydrothermal reworking led to decreases in the Cu isotopes in the later stages. In addition, because mass fractionation occurred during sulfide precipitation, the Zn isotope variations ranged from −0.060‰ to 0.422‰. Combined with the S isotopic compositions, these results also implied that different Fe-Cu-Zn isotopic fractionation mechanisms prevailed for the different sample types. Based on these results, we are sure that the metallic elements, including Fe, Cu, and Zn, were derived from the mantle in the SWIR hydrothermal field, and the Fe-Cu isotope results indicated that these metallic elements were provided by fluid leaching processes. Using the isotopic fractionation and sulfide results, we calculated that the Fe-Cu-Zn isotopic compositions of the hydrothermal fluid in this field were δ56Fe(fluid): −0.8~0.0‰; δ65Cu(fluid): 0.3~1.3‰; and δ66Zn(fluid): 0~0.48‰. 14. Basalt from the Extinct Spreading Center in the West Philippine Basin: New Geochemical Results and Their Petrologic and Tectonic Implications

Abstract

We present geological, bulk-rock geochemical and Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic data for mafic rocks from the West Philippine Basin (WPB). These mafic rocks comprise pillow basalts characterized by a vesicular structure. The mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB)-normalized trace element patterns of basalts from the study area display depletions in Nb. In addition, the chondrite-normalized lanthanide patterns of basalts from the WPB are characterized by significant depletions in the light lanthanides and nearly flat Eu to Lu segments. The investigated rocks have initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (87Sr/86Sr(i)) of 0.703339–0.703455 and high εNd(t) values (8.0 to 8.7). Furthermore, basalts from the WPB have 176Hf/177Hf ratios that range from 0.28318 to 0.28321 and high εHf(t) from 15.2 to 16.3. Semi-quantitative modeling demonstrates that the parental melts of basalts from the study area were derived by ~20% adiabatic decompression melting of a rising spinel-bearing peridotite source. The Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic compositions of basalts from the WPB indicate that their parental magmas were derived from an upper mantle reservoir possessing the so-called Indian-type isotopic anomaly. Interpretation of the isotopic data suggests that the inferred mantle source was most likely influenced by minor inputs of a sediment melt derived from a downgoing lithospheric slab. Collectively, the petrographic and geochemical characteristics of basalts from the study area are analogous to those of mafic rocks with a back-arc basin (BAB)-like affinity. As such, the petrogenesis of basalts from the WPB can be linked to upwelling of an Indian-type mantle source due to lithospheric slab subduction that was followed by back-arc spreading.

16. Single-port combined subsegment resection (RS3b + S1bi) with a rare branching segment pattern of the bronchi and vessels: case report and literature review.

Abstract

Background: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery segmentectomy is increasingly being used to resect peripheral small lung cancer. However, to manage some lesions which locate between segment deep inside the parenchyma is still challenging. Generally, wedge resection and segmentectomy are optional for peripheral small lung cancer. However, it is hard to achieve safe surgical margins if the lesion is located in the segment plane deep inside the parenchyma, especially close to the segment hilum. In that situation, lobectomy and bi-segmentectomy are usually performed for the sake of safe margins with the price of excessive normal lung tissue lost. To ensure safe surgical margins and preserve normal lung tissue as far as possible, combined subsegmentectomy is feasible and it is required precise preoperative plan including surgical margin delineation, bronchi and vessels variation and surgical procedure. The variation of bronchi and segment vein in our current case are rare and the branching pattern of pulmonary artery-inferior trunk (Tr.inf) is firstly reported in our case., Case Description: In 2019, a 41-year-old female presented to the Thoracic Clinic with a history of a 7-mm sized, mixed-density ground-glass opacity (GGO) in the right upper lobe. The lesion located in the segmental plane between S3b and S1b deep inside the parenchyma. We performed precise preoperative planning with 3-dimension pulmonary bronchi and vessels reconstruction and resected RS3b + S1bi via single-port approach. The patient was discharged from hospital on the 5th postoperative day without any complications. Chest computed tomography (CT) scans in the 12 th and 24 th months after surgery showed good lung recovery, and no atelectasis or pulmonary congestion was observed. Notably, we observed a new branching pattern of A1b, which came from the inferior trunk, combined with A3a. Additionally, we performed a literature review to analyze the variation patterns of segmental structures in the right upper lobe, and the indications, effects, and safety of combined subsegmentectomy., Conclusions: Our case and review of literature showed that combined subsegmentectomy was feasible for lesion deep inside parenchyma if a detailed preoperative plan and delicate procedures during surgery were implemented., Competing Interests: Conflicts of Interest: All authors have completed the ICMJE uniform disclosure form (available at https://atm.amegroups.com/article/view/10.21037/atm-22-1603/coif).
