Abstract

Coastal regions become unprecedentedly vulnerable to coastal hazards that are associated with sea level rise. The purpose of this paper is therefore to simulate prospective urban exposure to changing sea levels. This article first applied the cellular-automaton-based SLEUTH model (Project Gigalopolis, 2016) to calibrate historical urban dynamics in Bay County, Florida (USA) – a region that is greatly threatened by rising sea levels. This paper estimated five urban growth parameters by multiple-calibration procedures that used different Monte Carlo iterations to account for modeling uncertainties. It then employed the calibrated model to predict three scenarios of urban growth up to 2080 – historical trend, urban sprawl, and compact development. We also assessed land use impacts of four policies: no regulations; flood mitigation plans based on the whole study region and on those areas that are prone to experience growth; and the protection of conservational lands. This study lastly overlaid projected urban areas in 2030 and 2080 with 500-year flooding maps that were developed under 0, 0.2, and 0.9 m sea level rise. The calibration results that a substantial number of built-up regions extend from established coastal settlements. The predictions suggest that total flooded area of new urbanized regions in 2080 would be more than 25 times that under the flood mitigation policy, if the urbanization progresses with few policy interventions. The joint model generates new knowledge in the domain between land use modeling and sea level rise. It contributes to coastal spatial planning by helping develop hazard mitigation schemes and can be employed in other international communities that face combined pressure of urban growth and climate change.

Abstract

The popularity of Internet technology has brought about some fundamental changes in the field of GIS. Internet GIS is emerging as a new technology to access, process, and disseminate spatial information over the Internet. Internet GIS cover a much wider audience than the traditional GIS. This raises many issues that are distinct from traditional desktop GIS, such as easy access, web-compatible user interface, and file transfer security. I will first discuss the definition and features of Internet GIS. Two major approaches used in the Internet GIS development -- server-side processing and client-side processing -- are then described. These approaches are compared according to their performance, user interactivity, and other criteria. The server-side approach is appropriate to provide users easy access and inquiry of large databases, whereas the client-side Internet GIS offer better user interactions. The technology of Internet GIS is evolving rapidly. It is therefore important for the GIS community to monitor and define the course of its development.

Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is currently under construction at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l.).The detector consists of a central carpet, 74 × 78 m2, made of a single layer of Resistive Plate Counters (RPCs), and surrounded by a partially instrumented guard ring for a total instrumented area of about 6700 m2. The digital read-out, performed by means of pick-up electrodes 6.7 × 62 cm2 (strip), allows to measure the charged particle number of small size air showers. The technique of counting the number of fired strips on the ARGO carpet corresponds to operate in the 10÷500 TeV energy region where both direct and indirect measurements on the primary cosmic radiation have been performed. Many composition models have been proposed by different experiments. In this work we discuss the ability of the ARGO detector to discriminate among some models.

Abstract

SUMMARY This article investigates the effects of a mushy inner core boundary on the eigenperiods of the Slichter modes for a simple, but realistic, earth model (rotating, spherical configuration, elastic inner core and mantle, neutrally stratified, inviscid, compressible liquid core). It is found that the influence of the mushy boundary layer is substantial compared with some other effects, such as those from elasticity of the mantle, non-neutral stratification of the liquid outer core and ellipticity of the Earth and centrifugal potential. The results obtained here may set a lower bound on the eigenperiods of the Slichter modes for a realistic earth model. For example, for a PREM model, the lower bound of the central period of the Slichter modes should be about 5.3 hr.

Abstract

The recent claim by Smylie [1992] to have detected the Slichter modes of the Earth's inner core rests on what appears to be a remarkable agreement between theory and observation. However the theoretical eigenperiods which are used by Smylie conflict significantly with all previously published periods for the Slichter modes, both for non-rotating and rotating Earth models. A closer examination of the theory used in these calculations reveals the use of static Love numbers to represent the response of the inner core and mantle to dynamics in the liquid core. We here show that the use of dynamic Love numbers restores the eigenperiods to those obtained using standard seismological theory and consequently destroys agreement between these periods and the claimed observations.

Abstract

Since 1996, a hybrid experiment consisting of the emulsion chamber and burst detector array and the Tibet-II air-shower array has been operated at Yangbajing (4300 m above sea level, 606 g/cm^2) in Tibet. This experiment can detect air-shower cores, called as burst events, accompanied by air showers in excess of about 100 TeV. We observed about 4300 burst events accompanied by air showers during 690 days of operation and selected 820 proton-induced events with its primary energy above 200 TeV using a neural network method. Using this data set, we obtained the energy spectrum of primary protons in the energy range from 200 to 1000 TeV. The differential energy spectrum obtained in this energy region can be fitted by a power law with the index of -2.97 $\pm$ 0.06, which is steeper than that obtained by direct measurements at lower energies. We also obtained the energy spectrum of helium nuclei at particle energies around 1000 TeV., 25 pages, 22 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. D

Abstract

We have shown that the Sun's shadow by high energy cosmic rays moves year by year and its behavior is correlated with a time variation of the large-scale structure of the solar and interplanetary magnetic fields. The solar activity was near minimum in the period from 1996 through 1997. Using the data obtained with the Tibet air shower array, we examined the shadowing of cosmic rays by the Sun in this quiet phase of solar cycle, and found that the Sun's shadow was just in the apparent direction of the Sun, though it was observed at the position considerably away from the Sun to the south-west in the period between 1990 and 1993. It is known that the magnetic pole of equivalent solar dipole was reversed during the previous active phase, and near solar minimum the dipole was aligned with the rotating axis, preserving its N-pole on the north pole side of the Sun. This causes the solar magnetic field to shift the Sun's shadow to the east. Thus, the observed results suggest that the shift of the Sun's shadow due to the solar magnetic field was pushed back by the effect of the geomagnetic field, since the geomagnetic field always make the shadow shift to the west. Abstract

Bakelite RPCs, assembled according to the ARGO design, have been operated in the high altitude Laboratory of YBJ using dedicated electronics to pick-up the streamer signal. Here we report on the results concerning absorbed current, single counting rate, efficiency and time resolution. Abstract

A resistive plate counters (RPCs) carpet of similar to50 m(2) has been put in operation in the Yangbajing Laboratory (Tibet, P.R. China) at 4300 in a.s.l., in order to study the RPCs performance at high altitude and the detector capability of imaging the EAS disc. This test has been performed in view of an enlarged use of RPCs for the ARGO-YBJ experiment. This experiment will be devoted to a wide range of fundamental issues in cosmic rays and astroparticle physics, including in particular gamma-ray astronomy and gamma-ray bursts physics at energies greater than or equal to 100 GeV. In this paper we present and discuss the procedures adopted to calibrate the detector and reconstruct the shower direction. Results concerning many shower features as the angular distribution, the density spectrum, the time profile of the shower front, are found well consistent with the expectation. Abstract

The characteristics of a 50m(2) RPC carpet(prototype of YBJ-ARGO experiment)was analyzed using its test run data. A correction method of the systematic time error is suggested, and nonuniform azimuthal angle distribution possibly due to direction reconstruction error on an asymmetric carpet is reported.

Abstract

An RPC carpet covering similar to 10(4) m(2) (ARGO-YBJ experiment) will be installed in the YangBaJing Laboratory (Tibet, People's Republic of China) at an altitude of 4300 m a.s.l. A test-module of similar to 50 m(2) has been put in operation in this laboratory and about 10(6) air shower events have been collected. Abstract

ARGO-YBJ (Astrophysical Radiation with Ground-based Observatory at YangBaJing) is a detector optimized to study small size air showers. It consists of a layer of Resistive Plate Counters (RPCs) covering an area of similar to 6500 m(2) and will be located in the Yangbajing Laboratory (Tibet, China) at 4300 m a.s.l. ARGO-YBJ will be devoted to a wide range of fundamental issues in cosmic rays and astroparticle physics, including in particular gamma-ray astronomy and gamma-ray bursts physics in the range 10 GeV divided by 500 TeV. The sensitivity of ARGO-YBJ to detect high energy GRBs is presented.

Abstract

We present the ARGO-YBJ experiment, a full coverage detector placed at high altitude (similar to 4300 m a.s.l.) that exploits the RPC technique. Results of a test experiment performed at Yanbajing site, with a full coverage RPC carpet of 50 m(2) are also presented.

Abstract

An RPC carpet covering similar to 10(4) m(2) (ARGO-YBJ experiment) will be installed in the YangBaJing Laboratory (Tibet, P.R. China) at an altitude of 4300 m a.s.l.. A test-module of similar to 50 m(2) has been put in operation in this laboratory and about 10(6) air shower events have been collected. The carpet capability of reconstructing the shower features is presented.

Abstract

The ARCO-YBJ experiment, (Astrophysical Radiation Ground-based Observatory at YaugBaJing) is under construction in Tibet, 90 kill to the north of Lhasa. The full coverage approach and the high altitude location allow the study of many physics items in the field of low energy cosmic rays, namely gamma-ray astronomy, diffuse gamma-rays, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), proton/antiproton ratio, primary proton spectrum and heliosphere physics, In this paper the expected sensitivities of ARGO-YBJ for gamma astronomy and GRB physics are presented and compared with the present experimental techniques and results. The performance of a test-module of similar to 50 m(2) operated on-site is, also discussed.
