The Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton - Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE) is a programme to study a minimally biased sample of 118 galaxy clusters detected by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. Accurate and precise mass measurements are required to exploit CHEX-MATE as an astrophysical laboratory and a calibration sample for cosmological probes in the era of large surveys. We measured masses based on the galaxy dynamics, which are highly complementary to weak-lensing or X-ray estimates. We analysed the sample with a uniform pipeline that is stable both for poorly sampled or rich clusters - using spectroscopic redshifts from public (NED, SDSS, and DESI) or private archives - and dedicated observational programmes. We modelled the halo mass density and the anisotropy profile. Membership is confirmed with a cleaning procedure in phase space. We derived masses from measured velocity dispersions under the assumed model. We measured dynamical masses for 101 CHEX-MATE clusters with at least ten confirmed members within the virial radius r_200c. Estimated redshifts and velocity dispersions agree with literature values when available. Validation with weak-lensing masses shows agreement within 8+-16(stat.)+-5(sys.)%, and confirms dynamical masses as an unbiased proxy. Comparison with {\it Planck} masses shows them to be biased low by 34+-3(stat.)+-5(sys.)%. We aim to study how the orbits of galaxies in clusters depend on the prominence of the corresponding central galaxies. We divided our data set of $\sim$ 100 clusters and groups into four samples based on their magnitude gap between the two brightest members, $\Delta m_{12}$. We then stacked all the systems in each sample, in order to create four stacked clusters, and derive the mass and velocity anisotropy profiles for the four groups of clusters using the MAMPOSSt procedure. Once the mass profile is known, we also obtain the (non parametric) velocity anisotropy profile via the inversion of the Jeans equation. In systems with the largest $\Delta m_{12}$, galaxy orbits are prevalently radial, except near the centre, where orbits are isotropic (or tangential when also the central galaxies are considered in the analysis). In the other three samples with smaller $\Delta m_{12}$, galaxy orbits are isotropic or only mildly radial. We review the formation and evolution of fossil groups and clusters from both the theoretical and the observational points of view. In the optical band, these systems are dominated by the light of the central galaxy. They were interpreted as old systems that had enough time to merge all the M* galaxies within the central one. During the last two decades many observational studies were performed to prove the old and relaxed state of fossil systems. The majority of these studies, that spans a wide range of topics including halos global scaling relations, dynamical substructures, stellar populations, and galaxy luminosity functions, seem to challenge this scenario. The general picture that can be obtained by reviewing all the observational works is that the fossil state could be transitional. Indeed, the formation of the large magnitude gap observed in fossil systems could be related to internal processes rather than an old formation., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. We present a robust method to estimate the redshift of galaxies using Pan-STARRS1 photometric data. Our method is an adaptation of the one proposed by Beck et al. (2016) for the SDSS Data Release 12. It uses a training set of 2313724 galaxies for which the spectroscopic redshift is obtained from SDSS, and magnitudes and colours are obtained from the Pan-STARRS1 Data Release 2 survey. The photometric redshift of a galaxy is then estimated by means of a local linear regression in a 5-dimensional magnitude and colour space. Our method achieves an average bias of $\overline{\Delta z_{\rm norm}}=-2.01 \times 10^{-4}$, a standard deviation of $\sigma(\Delta z_{\rm norm})=0.0298$, and an outlier rate of $P_o=4.32\%$ when cross-validating on the training set. Even though the relation between each of the Pan-STARRS1 colours and the spectroscopic redshifts is noisier than for SDSS colours, the results obtained by our method are very close to those yielded by SDSS data. The proposed method has the additional advantage of allowing the estimation of photometric redshifts on a larger portion of the sky ($\sim 3/4$ vs $\sim 1/3$).
